My Thanksgiving gratitudes for the artist

Happy Thanksgiving! This is the time of year many people focus on their thanks and gratitude.

I often hear actors complain of what they don’t have going on. Many are stuck waiting for things to happen.  I think gratitude work for actors is especially important because, with all the rejection, it’s easy to become jaded and discouraged.  People in other fields might interview for 5-10 jobs, get one, and work at that job for 1-10 years. Maybe 5 years later they put themselves out for another job and get 9-10 rejections before getting a job for another 5 years or so.

With actors, it’s constant. They may have 1-10 interviews (auditions) in one week (if they are lucky).  If they get one of those jobs, the next week or soon after, they are unemployed again, and will have to chase interviews again.  When they are lucky enough to get a job or just an audition, the cycle repeats itself. Over and over again, looking for a job until you get one. Working a day to a few weeks, and doing it all over again. That’s the path, the lifestyle of an actor. And yes, it takes a particular “skin” to put yourself out there again and again, and again, and again. All this while getting rejected far more times than not. Ten to twenty fold, even more for most.

There’s more – not only do actors deal with the rejection of not getting a job, they have to deal with rejection of not even getting the audition!

I feel it important that actors focus on their gratitude’s. It’s one way of keeping your sanity and keeping a positive attitude.  For the actors that I see having success, they have a practice of living in gratitude.

My three gratitudes of why I love this business.

  1. There is no barrier to entry

You don’t need a specific degree or certificate. If you have ambition, desire, discipline, passion, and talent, no one can stop you. Whatever your idea, there is no one standing in your way.

  1. There are no editorial gatekeepers

If you have an idea or talent, you can put it out there your way with your unique expression.  With Youtube, Facebook Live, and so many other venues you can self-produce yourself. Whether you are an actor, musician, comedian, you can produce yourself and put it out there. There is no one to stop you from doing it! There is no one to say no! And you can do it your way, no editors to change your vision.

  1. Audience time is no longer an issue.

People are not waiting to get home to watch TV. They watch whenever they want. They use their phones, computers, and ipads. They watch media while waiting in line, on their breaks, waiting for their food to arrive, riding in cars (not driving of course), even waiting for a movie to start.  Think about this – people can go to a movie or theater and watch you while they are waiting for their show to start! Wow. That didn’t exist 5 years ago.

I’ll leave you with something I saw in a casting office.  I think of it every time I go into an audition. It was a poster on the wall.

Congratulations

You are 1 of 36 actors chosen for your role today.

FYI – you were chosen from a pool of 600-3000 submissions for this role.

Please be on time, be prepared, be professional

Please realize that this is a great opportunity than many actors will not have.

Happy Thanksgiving. I am grateful to each of you who read my blogs. I hope they help and serve you in some way.

Crown City Theatre Presents: “The Marvelous Wonderettes”

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” @ Crown City Theatre in North Hollywood extends through February 25, 2018!

What better way to bring in the holiday season than with a musical?

Crown City is one of the few theaters in NoHo that regularly produces musicals and they are very, very good at it.

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” is another excellent production from the masters of musicals at Crown City.  Set in Springfield High School, the first act is spent at the high school prom.  The boys singing group, booked for the dance, has had to cancel last minute. So The Marvelous Wonderettes step in with their wonderful versions of the latest 50s hits, laced with hilarious personal interactions and stories surrounding the songs.

marvellous wonderetts

The girls, brilliantly portrayed by these particularly talented and fiercely authentic actresses, sing and shimmy and bicker their way through the show.  They torment each other, support each other and create a world full of real moments, cleverly manipulated songs and even a bit of audience participation.  We get a glimpse into these fascinating and beautifully drawn characters world and they easily charm their way into our hearts.  Each character is their own perfect version of someone we remember from school and the play is written so each of them can cleverly sing their own themes. It’s a brilliant way to present a story.

The second act brings us into their future, at the 10-year reunion, where the band get back together!  Some have stayed in the town and some have moved on.  Some have got married, one is very, very pregnant, and some are busy and happy and in love.  The spectrum of life is represented in full in these four women, and as they get to know each other again through the songs and the stories, we see them as more complex and charming and their friendships deepen.  All this happens to the songs of the 60s and these “marvelous” actresses manage to develop and masterfully grow Betty Jean, Cindy Lou, Missy and Suzy into friends we would all love to have.

It’s “Hairspray” meets “Happy Days” with a dash of “Little Rascals” for good luck.

I must confess to not having seen this show before, so I was delighted to have the chance and Crown City did not disappoint.  “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is fun and joyful, hilarious and moving…the cast are really fantastic singers and do the songs justice, so prepare to be tapping your toes and searching for the oldies station in the car on the way home.

I highly recommend “The Marvelous Wonderettes” at Crown City Theatre.

Extends through February 25!

#Right2Recess – NoHo Fringe

Humanity Play Project Presents

“#Right2Recess,” a Theatre for Young Audiences play,  a part of NoHo Fringe, at Acme NoHo, Saturday, Nov 11 – Sunday, Nov 12.

This play was produced as part of the NoHo Fringe but is a project that will be shown at other venues over the next year.

23435034 704886143042761 1125409396156337499 n

I honestly don’t remember when I have had more fun at a play. The Humanity Project, whose ethos is “Performance with a Purpose” has created an interactive and beautiful performed child-friendly play. It’s more than child-friendly in fact, it’s engineered to encourage empathy and acceptance and to grow in children the feeling that they have power over their environment and can, with focus, teamwork and organization, make change happen.

Set in an elementary school, “#Right2recess” follows the impact a new Principle has on the students.

Within days of the new principle’s arrival, rumors circulate that he is going to cancel recess. The reaction from four particular students, close friends and one sibling, is not to lose the favorite part of their school day so they decide to do something about it.

We follow them as they discover their voice, find ways to protest, struggle with opposing points of view and ultimately achieve their goal through teamwork, self-belief, friendship and humor – and the help of some of the school’s hand puppets who magically come to life when no one is around.

23435129 704425259755516 1640527200251093473 n

It’s just brilliantly done.  The actors are wonderful and so great with the kids in the audience.  They manage to really become the six-year-old characters they play but without seeming silly or contrived.  Children are the most discerning critics I have found, yet the children in the audience responded so positively and with such authenticity that there can be no doubt about the results.

Giving children the confidence and the power to effectively control their lives is such an incredible gift.

The Humanity Project, using this lovely and inspiring play, has proven that through something as simple as a play children are able to experience and participate in the important conversation of what it means to be a citizen in our every changing world.

I highly recommend “#Right2Recess” and encourage you to find out more about this valuable project https://humanityplayproject.com

My Adventures with God

The Road Theatre Company  presents a reading of “A Good Day at Auschwitz from from Stephen Tobolowsky’s new book, “My Adventures with God” on December 10.

Come play a game of Seven Card Stud – with a shot of whiskey!

The Road Theatre Company and Taylor Gilbert, Founder/Artistic Director together with Sam Anderson, Artistic Director, produced by Ann Hearn and Carlyle King present a fundraiser for one night only to benefit the Road Theatre. A reading from Stephen Tobolowsky’s new book “My Adventures with God.” (“I found myself laughing giddily throughout his fascinating and strangely profound memoir. I hope God gets to read it! ~ Rainn Wilson) Sunday December 10th at 5:30. Wine & refreshments at 5pm with a book signing immediately following the reading. At the Road Theatre on Magnolia, located in The NoHo Senior Arts Colony, 10747 Magnolia Blvd. in North Hollywood.

“A Good Day at Auschwitz” is a true story of Abe, a man Stephen met at his synagogue. Abe was a fellow of great humor and heart who not only survived three years at Auschwitz – certainly the worst place on earth – but he fell in love there. Abe’s life speaks to the resilience of the human spirit, renewal, and hope – even when there seems to be none. Stephen’s rendering of Abe’s story was recorded for NPR and PRI radio, and has been described as “so compelling it required sitting in the driveway to hear the end and letting the ice cream melt.” For the first time, actor Alan Mandell and Stephen will read the story live.

Joshua Tree National Park – one of California’s True Gems

Joshua Tree National Park

Still one of my favorite national parks in the United States, Joshua Tree sits just about a 90 minute drive from Los Angeles, and is truly “other-wordly” feeling when you’re there.

Joshua Tree National Park is characterized by rugged rock formations and stark desert landscapes. Named for the region’s twisted, bristled Joshua trees, the park straddles the cactus-dotted Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert, which is higher and cooler. Keys View looks out over the Coachella Valley. Hiking trails weave through the boulders of Hidden Valley.

The park offers visitors endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. Depending on the number of hours you have to spend, your interests and energy, here are some ideas to consider

If you have four hours or less, begin your tour at a visitor center where park staff will be happy to help you plan your visit. With limited time you may want to confine your sightseeing to the main park roads. Many pullouts with wayside exhibits dot these roads. There are 12 self-guiding nature trails. Consider experiencing at least one of these walks during a short park visit. On clear days the vista from Keys View extends beyond Salton Sea to Mexico and is well worth the additional 20-minute drive.

If you plan to spend an entire day, there will be time to sample one or more hiking trails. A ranger program will add enjoyment and understanding to your visit. Or, October through May, reserve a spot in person at the Oasis Visitor Center for the popular Keys Ranch guided walking tour. If solitude is what you are after, plan an all-day hike into the backcountry. If you would like to experience the desert from the seat of a mountain bike, the park offers an extensive network of dirt roads that make for less crowded and safer cycling than the paved main roads. Joshua Tree is a popular rock-climbing area. Many visitors enjoy just watching the climbers in action.

With more than one day in the park your options increase. There are nine campgrounds and backcountry camping is permitted. For “peak baggers,” the park has ten mountains greater than 5,000 feet (1,524 m) in elevation. Or make it your goal to hike to all five of the park’s fan palm oases. Other trails lead you to remnants of the gold mining era, a colorful part of the park’s cultural history. Whatever you choose, your time will be rewarding. The desert holds much more than what is readily apparent to the casual observer. (I always get inspired by the survival mode that the plants and living organisms must always be in to thrive in a desert setting.)

If camping isn’t your thing, there are plenty of hotel and motel options close to the park in the town of 29 Palms. For an extra enjoyable evening out with dinner and drinks, head over to nearby Pioneertown to Pappy & Harriet’s , an awesome rustic decor and mason jar drinks live music restaurant/bar that seems to have been the model for the classic movie “RoadHouse”. Top name musicians sometimes stop in unannounced to perform a set, such as Paul McCartney and Robert Plant recently.

So if you’re looking for an exciting, easy to navigate and extremely interesting scenic setting to get away to, you can’t go wrong with a visit to Joshua Tree National Park. It’s a truly one-of-a-kind California gem.

Ivy Sole “You Don’t Know My Name”

We’re listening to Ivy Sole’s single “You Don’t Know My Name” from her debut album “Eden”…and so should you.

Ivy Sole – love her name. Sole means sun/sunny in Italian. You hear her spoken word background in every song whether she sings or raps. Her melodic voice tells stories over soulful tracks. Ivy is like a ray of sunshine in a musical world of the same-old-same-old, meaningless, trite, gray music.

Watch out, Ivy Sole is bringing meaning and story telling back to music.

She released her second album “East” and third album “West” this year but we are still fixated on her debut album “Eden.” We are still savoring her musical stories because they are just that good.

If we were forced to pick a favorite track from the “Eden” album it would be “You Don’t Know My Name” with the Alicia Keyes’ sample. Right out it brings us back to college and/or easier times singing Alicia Keyes…off key. The sample does its job and sets the initial mood, the mood to sway and think of good times – something we all need nowadays.

But it’s definitely Ivy’s voice and lyrics that guide our mood to groove and reminisce.

{soundcloud}https://soundcloud.com/ivy-sole/eden-you-dont-know-my-name?in=ivy-sole/sets/eden{/soundcloud}

The song is nostalgic: Meet at the stacks, English 233, freshman year, you used to call me on my house phone, hang out after school at the mall, you rock at double dutch, puppy love… But what’s interesting is the song is from a dude’s perspective from now, college days and way back in the day.

Ivy Sole’s name definitely fits her. Her music is like you’re listening to sunshine rays of spoken word. Get to know Ivy Sole at @ivysole on all social media.

Keep making music that makes us move.

Porters of Hellsgate Presents Shakespeare’s “King John”

Porters of Hellsgate Presents Shakespeare’s “King John” at the Whitmore Lindley Theatre through December 10.

“King John” marks the 25th production in The Porters of Hellsgate’s epic journey through Shakespeare’s entire canon of work.  It could be said that it’s the most politically timely.

Let’s set the scene, shall we?

A weak and feckless bully becomes king when his father dies.  Because of his fear and self-loathing, he then proceeds to wreak havoc with his selfish lust for power and his total disdain for the safety and well being of his subjects, by taking the country to war with France while he tries to destroy his rival Prince Arthur, the true successor to the throne.

So not exactly a comedy…although it is very funny at times, in a wincingly familiar way.

What does a powerful leader with a terrible personality surrounded by sycophants and psychopaths do to the world around him?  How do we see through his eyes, dare we? And how do we watch him fall…with utter glee most probably?

The always superb and wickedly perfect Porters of Hellsgate have done it again. With brilliant actors bursting with every trick an actor could have, they spin this tale, so beautifully written, with deft passion and rueful style.

It’s a riot of a play.  Full of battles and contentious manoeuvrings and betrayal and sweet love, jealousy and demonic plotting.  With one side all honor, dignity and respect and the other twisted, vengeful deceit.  All this marvelousness and the cast are just absolutely fantastic in every single role.

I remember reading “King John” in school, I was forced to of course.  It’s a mostly overlooked story sadly, perhaps not the brightest play in Shakespeare’s firmament, although I rather like it. But with this cast and in these turbulent political times it seems altogether fresh and new and suddenly vital and important again.

Oh and there’s lots of lovely swordplay…with long swords all flailing around…very exciting! You will recognize some marvelous turns of phrase and there’s a wonderful speech given by the fabulous Betsy Roth as Constance, Prince Arthur’s mother.  She is totally fearless in this role, bravo!

But everyone is brilliant, everyone finds their own particular corner of this tempestuous world and makes it their own.  I love this company and their very grand quest to produce all these incredible and always pertinent plays.

We are very lucky that they seem to like our little NoHo neighborhood and the best way to encourage them to stay is to go and see them perform and to applaud very, very loudly at the end.

As usual, I highly and profusely recommend “King John” and The Porters of Hellsgate who perform it.  Don’t dawdle or dither…get your tickets.

“All New People” By Zack Braff

Yelling Belligerent Things Productions presents: “All New People” by Zack Braff at The Actors Workout Studio through November 19.

This play opens where some lives end…with a noose and a wobbly chair.

Fortunately for us, the feeble, if not heartfelt attempt at suicide by Charlie, played with dour panache by Joey Millin, is interrupted by the untimely entrance of a real estate agent, Emma, who arrives to prepare for a showing of Charlie’s friend’s rather fabulous Long Island house to some potential summer renters…who never show.

Emma, played with sweet and epic hilarity and not a bad English accent by Marissa Fennell, leaps into action, dislodges Charlie from his perch and swears to stay with him, cheer him up and prevent him from trying again.  She feels fate has stepped in and neither one of them has the right to interfere with the destiny of their rather dramatic meeting.

She is also a little high, and bent on getting higher.  After convincing Charlie that she should stay, she calls her friend and local Fire Chief Myron for back up and additional drugs.  Myron, played by the sublimely brilliant Kenneth James Billington, soon arrives, stash in hand and the three settle into their weird situation until the final of the ensemble arrives, Kim, played by the ridiculously good Elizabeth Ann.  Kim is an escort, hired by Charlie’s friend and owner of the house to distract him from his depression with some sex. He politely rejects her, but she stays anyway…after all she has been paid already and it’s a long drive back to New York.

So here they all are.  The suicidal loner, the stoned British woman in desperate need of a green card, her doting drug dealing fireman friend and the slightly loopy New York high class hooker. This is frankly a perfectly contrived situational comedy.

This is Mr Braff’s first play, we remember, of course, his brilliant “Garden State” film and its sequel, as well as his long run as J.D. on “Scrubs.”  He is a great comic writer and the characters are a very clever mix of types, all circling around each other, rather drunkenly at times, but always with a masterful purpose to amuse.

It’s full of jokes, a wild variety of one liners, and then much more keenly defined observational humor as the characters reveal themselves throughout the play.

22429616 495523594155649 6743862772351631360 n

None of this would work of course without the excellent cast.  All far better at really ‘being’ these people than anyone I could imagine.  The casting is really phenomenal actually and each actor fits their part perfectly, so it’s really wonderful to watch them perform together.

It’s a long one act, which I love because a play is already an artificial environment without taking a break halfway through to remind us we are in a theatre. So I’m really glad they tore through it the way they did.

“All New People” is a really fantastic play, funny, smart, and about people just like the ones all around us, dealing with problems we all have, well maybe except Charlie attepting to kill himself…hopefully thats not a problem most of us have. But the play isn’t really about that exactly.  It’s about four people who spend some time together, drink a bit and laugh a lot and get through something profoundly sad and difficult together, for not any other reason than they just decide to.  Life is like that sometimes, when you least expect it, and this play takes that “sometimes” and makes it really, really funny.

“All New People” is directed with aplomb by the charming Robert Dominick Jones who manages to give these fine actors the space they need to shine in these roles. Bravo!

It’s a very short run so get your tickets right away, this is a play you really shouldn’t miss…it’s that good.

Top Tips on Transporting Theatre Equipment

Top Tips on Transporting Theatre Equipment

Whether you’re a travelling theatre company needing advice on transporting equipment regularly, or you’re just a theatre maker looking to import from China, finding the right advice for moving heavy and expensive equipment can be a daunting and confusing process. To help you out, we’ve decided to pull together some of the best tips, tricks and advice for transporting equipment from A to B safely!

Packing

Heavy and sensitive equipment can be nerve-wracking to move around, but with the right care it’s easier than you think. If you have screens, make sure you correctly and carefully roll them up, and store them well in boxes with padding. Projectors or other electrical equipment needs to be packaged in padded boxes too, and bumps and knocks avoided as much as possible. Even moisture can become a problem with these sensitive items, so being well packaged and protected is vital for ensuring your equipment stays in top condition with every move it has to undergo. Foam or bubble wrap are good choices for padding, as Styrofoam peanuts can get into equipment and cause more harm than good!

Heavy Equipment

When it comes to transporting heavy equipment or props, securing everything in place and choosing the right vehicle is everything. If the items are on the extremely heavy side, you should even consider calling in assistance from a haulage company that specialises in heavy deliveries. If you do choose to transport it yourself, however, you need to pick the right vehicle. For example, an average trailer might do if your heavy equipment fits neatly in boxes, but for columns, or awkwardly shaped items, an extendable trailer or large truck could be the solution you need!

Lights

Lights are often some of the bulkiest, heaviest, and most fragile equipment of your entire load. Both the lights and the tripods need to be protected, so a case is your best bet. But where do you start? Well, really you need a long, semi-hard case that can roll. As eye-watering as it might be to come to terms with, the more expensive the case, the better it is likely to be – and not just in the way of protecting your lights. Think about how much weight could be bearing down on the wheels of your case. Finding replacement wheels when those wear down will be much easier with well-known brands than with a little known brand!

Reconnecting and Setting Everything Up

So you’ve got your equipment to where it needs to go. Everything’s in one piece, nothing’s damaged and you’re ready and raring to go. Except, now you have to reconnect and set everything up… How do you make this easier for yourself? The answer is simple – when you disconnect everything the first time, make clear note of what goes where and what needs to be set up or taken down first. Documenting everything can help you when it comes to unpacking and setting up, from the layout of the wires, to finding everything you need in relaxed seconds rather than stressful minutes.

Transporting your theatre equipment ultimately comes down to packing everything well, ensuring that everything is secured, and planning ahead. With the extra care and consideration, moving your theatre equipment will never have been easier.

The 5 Most Trainable Puppy Breeds

The 5 Most Trainable Puppy Breeds

Dogs are one of those things in life that I think most everyone should experience. But, some people want and need a dog that is easily trainable; not only when it comes to tricks, but being well-behaved and learning to potty train early on. If you are looking to purchase puppies for sale in Florida, here are the top 5 most trainable breeds.

Golden Retriever

Not only are these dogs incredibly smart, but they are very easy to train. The Golden Retriever is essentially the “good boy” of the gang of dogs you see here. They love to please their master, but they can also be fun and goofy and playful. It doesn’t matter if you want a companion, a show dog, a hunting dog, an athlete, or something like a guide or service dog, a Golden Retriever is easily trainable for any job. If you need to train this type of dog though, you’ll need to do it right by hiring someone to do it for you – someone that has experience with a Golden Retriever. If you want a friend that will stick by you through thick and thin, the Golden Retriever is the dog for you.

Australian Shepherd

The Australian Shepherd is also very smart as well as highly energetic. They love to play, have fun, be entertained and keep busy! Training them to get involved with certain tricks will lead to hours of fun and playfulness for both the dog and you. They especially love agility tricks like playing with Frisbees, bringing back tennis balls and getting involved in herding trials. Not only are the agility tricks good for the dog and are a way for them to burn off some of that energy, but its a great way for the 2 of you to spend some quality time together too.

German Shepherd

While the German Shepherd can be a great companion, these types of dogs were born feeling like they have a job to do. This is probably one of the biggest reasons you will find these types of dogs doing airport security, being drug sniffing dogs and helping out our military as bomb and IED sniffers. They tend to rely heavily on a strict training plan, but they also know how to have fun which essentially makes them the perfect dog. Make sure that you start training him or her the first day you get them.

Poodle’s

A lot of people think that while a Poodle is revered for their looks, its all they are known for. Actually, these dogs are inherently intelligent. Also, because these (as well as Bichon’s) were bred to be circus dogs, they can easily learn tricks and commands. Be careful though, it’s important that for Poodles and Bichon’s that you get them properly potty trained too – they can be a little vengeful and stubborn if left home alone without being trained!

Miniature Schnauzer

With the combination of being able to learn tricks and commands easily with the amount of energy these dogs have; it would only make sense to get them trained early on. They make prime candidates in training grounds, obedience competitions and more. Note: These guys love to bark! So making sure you curb that type of behavior early on is paramount. Although its probably something he wont stop doing entirely, at least you can curb it.

It’s important to remember that each dog is different – even the ones listed above. Each one will meld with you differently, have a different temperament and personality. While these dogs are the 5 most trainable dogs that doesn’t mean by any means that its a guarantee that the puppy you buy will be 100% on the dot in terms of what he or she is “supposed” to be or how he or she is “supposed” to act.

Remember, dogs are like people; they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors, personalities and live life in different ways. You could, for example, grow up with a Poodle and decide to get another one later on in life and it could be completely different from the first one you owned. That’s why training them is really important.

From Beastmaster to A Midsummer Night’s Dream

“Beastmaster” hero Marc Singer directs Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at NoHo’s The Group Rep.

Actor-director Marc Singer, internationally known as the hero in the “BEASTMASTER” series of feature films, is directing William Shakespeare’s perennial classic, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at The Group Rep located at The Lonny Chapman Theatre in the NoHo Arts District. Rehearsals have already begun, with the opening scheduled for November 17, 2017. I sat down with Mr. Singer prior to a Sunday afternoon rehearsal for a chat about the production.

R.A.: How did the idea to do A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM evolve?

Marc: I performed a one-man, 60-minute show comprised of 15 Shakespearean characters in 2015-2016. Oberon from Midsummer’s was one of the characters. My interpretation of the character was strikingly different than the norm. In exploring the play I discovered that the true through line of the piece had been lost and it was time to rediscover it. I became convinced that I could demonstrate a reawakening of the author’s intent. I would, as a matter of course, direct and play Oberon. That’s what we’re doing here with a wonderful cast in place, at the GRT.

R.A.: Without revealing too much, what are the standout factors in your interpretation of the piece that’ll make IT stand out?

MARC: It’s difficult to describe what makes MID so strikingly particular. [In my interpretation], Oberon’s place as driver of the storyline is now paramount in the story structure. The play moves forward because of his conflict with Titania over the Boy. It is customary for that conflict to seem like a sidebar issue, but in our production, Titania and Oberon represent the play’s central theme.

R.A.: You have a well known love for Shakespeare. What draws you to his work?

MARC: My father introduced me to Shakespeare when I was ten and in the fifth grade. He has been my intellectual advisor ever since. The world is a random and often chaotic place. Shakespeare provides a road map that makes sense of the world’s chaotic enactors. The work represents a lower case mission to me to pass on insight into those works before they are disfigured beyond rediscovery. In my mind, Shakespeare represents the cultural structure of modern humanity. He should be studied with that value in mind. MID is my first opportunity to fully implement my knowledge and training into a full length piece. I credit the realization of this idea to GRT’s co-artistic directors, Larry Eisenberg and Chris Winfield.

R.A.: Tell me a little about your casting process.

MARC: Casting was quite different and paradoxically easy. I’ve been a member of GRT a relatively short while and I found, during the casting process, that I was surrounded by powerful and skillful colleagues. It was an “embarrassment of riches.” Finding actors to audition was the easy part. The hard part was deciding! I stuck around to watch a bit of rehearsal. At this point, he was working with the younger actors in the cast playing the Fairies. Marc jumps up on stage regularly, acting all the parts, moving through the space and reciting the lines, demonstrating how he wants the scene played. Thusly, he puts he actors through their paces, demoing how he wants the scene done. His knowledge of the individual character viewpoints and where they reside in the overall, is impressive! Aside from the “Beastmaster” series, Mr. Singer has logged hundreds of hours of film and TV in shows like “V: The Final Battle,” “The Young and The Restless,” and “Dallas” He won the L.A. Drama Critics Award for Petruchio in “Taming of the Shrew” and has authored a book, “THE SYSTEM: How to Act Shakespeare.” He can be seen soon in TV’s “ARROW” as General Shrieve.

Rock N’ Roll Flea Market @ The Regent Theater

Rock N’ Roll Flea Market @ The Regent Theater

There it was, an ad for the Rock N’ Roll Flea Market as I scrolled down my Facebook feed looking for interesting posts.

The ad stated that it’s open the first Sunday of every month, entry was free and, to sweeten the draw, they offer $14 bottomless mimosas! That part definitely sparked my interest and drew me in as most places want $10 for one mimosa. I was in for the next one, and I kept asking myself how did I miss this one for so long?

Once inside the Flea Market, which is located in the Skid Row area of downtown Los Angeles, the rock n’ roll fantasy ride of oohs and ahhhhhs began and left me totally agog at all of the cool merch to be found there. Vintage clothing, lots of stalls selling vintage vinyl, leatherwork, jewelry made of animal bones and lots of skulls to name just a few of the amazing merchandise  curated at this place. And to top it off, sipping mimosas that are made with Gancia Prosecco and fresh orange juice while you browse the two-story venue packed with cool stuff made it seem like a party. It is a bit overwhelming and requires at least a second visit to take it all in. Even then not all of the same vendors will be there on the second visit.

Once it hit me that I was in Skid Row I was forced to ask myself a glaring question…is this a part of the “gentrification” of Skid Row? Please don’t get me started!

The venue that hosts the Rock N’ Roll Flea Market is The Regent Theater and has been home to everything from Vaudeville to an adult theater. It currently is hosting live music and is promoted by Spaceland Productions. This venue also offers up two side ventures; The Love Song and Prufrock Pizzeria which are names from a classic T.S. Eliot poem. At Prufrocks one can order a brunch to eat and then saunter over to The Love Song for a drink and play “Boozy Brunch Bingo” for tickets to Spaceland shows at their venues; Echoplex, Echo and The Regent.

For those of you that care, The Regent holds approximately 1,100 people and has a phenomenal PA system that rivals any other large “club” venue such as The Wiltern Theater or The Belasco Theater. “There is no place to rest your foot upon across the bottom of the bar because they don’t want you clogging up space while a concert is going strong,” offers the bartender that day, Gabe DeCastro. Castro answered many of my questions and then referred me to the man behind the scenes, Mike Andrews.

While rock n’ roll devotees saunter through the aisles and up the stairs to another level of interesting merch, there are rotating DJs playing cool music that ranges from the Kinks’ “You Really Got Me” to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.” There is even a full-sized screen in the background of their stage playing rock videos such as David Bowie. You will never be bored while in this place, believe me.

According to Andrews, “Spaceland Productions came to us because they wanted to do something for the community and we came up with the Rock N’ Roll Flea Market. We’ve been doing this for three years now.” Andrews describes this type of Flea Market as “A party where people sell stuff and people can buy stuff. We do this for a kind of fun.” Again, I’m asking myself “How did I miss this until now?” Andrews adds that this event is always well attended and that vendors only have to pay $50.00 for a space to sell their wares to the “party” attendees. Coveted spaces are at the entry and the regulars have their favorite spaces. This event  is open 11 am to 4 pm.

As you enter this Flea Market, a vinyl merchant City Mind Funk, that I know and follow on Instagram, has his “eclectic” art on sale. As you wind your way toward the stairs, vintage clothing stalls are on either side of you and a smattering of vinyl stalls are on either side of the theater. There is an amazing animal bone jewelry stall who told me their business is “Lovely Den Mama” and can be found on Etsy.

On my first visit there the amount of skulls and such was quite striking; there was even a vendor that sold hair combs with little skulls adorning the edges. The presence of skulls was not unsettling as I have done my share of Dia De Los Muertos art, including collaging skulls. One vendor said that a lot of people believe that having skulls around is representative of a long life while other vendors agree that as Dia De Los Muertos has gained popularity, so has the acceptance of skulls, skull art and jewelry. As for myself, I think that The Grateful Dead did a lot to usher in the acceptance of skull art adorned with flowers and such which was a part of Jerry Garcia’s culture.

After taking in all of the lovely things to experience at the Rock N’ Roll Flea Market I decided to turn right outside of the theater and walk up a block to 118 Winston Street and go check on “Indian Alley” thatis next-door to “These Days,” a gallery featuring up and coming artists and that sells eclectic items, vintage and out of print books as well as photo books. They just wrapped up a show that featured The Smiths which proprietor Stephen “Cockroach” Zigler said was a very successful show. There is a new show opening on Saturday, November 11th at the venue and the reception will be from 7 pm to 10 pm. The show will feature the art of Calder Greenwood and is titled “Quest For Peril.” If you are lucky, the gate to “Indian Alley” will be open and you’ll be able to get a look at some wonderful Native American themed street art. I know this area well and have spent a lot of time photographing the area and all it has to offer.

It was from Zigler that I learned about the area’s past, which includes Skid Row author and poet Charles Bukowski, “Notes From A Dirty Old Man,” and how 5th Street was also known as “The Nickel” to those that were frequent “guests” of the area. I had a great sit down with Zigler awhile back for a project I’ve been working on about street art and Indian Alley.

The next Rock N’ Roll Flea Market is slated for December 3, 2017 where you will be able to score lots of cool gifts for those hard to shop for Rockers in your loop. It is located at 448 S. Main Street between “The Nickel” and Winston Street.

Famous Hollywood Actors That Went To University

Famous Hollywood Actors That Went To University

It’s strange to think of famous faces sitting in classrooms, staying up all night to finish their essays and running on caffeine. But most Hollywood stars have been to college or university at some point in their lives. So, next time you’re struggling through your UK essays, remember that you have to go through this to reach greatness! We’ve taken a closer look at what the stars studied and where they went to university – just in case you’re nosy like us.

Brad Pitt

This famous Hollywood hunk is best known for his roles in smash hit movies like Fight Club, Thelma & Louise and Seven. Throughout his career, he’s collected a whole stash of awards, including taking home the prestigious Academy Award for ‘Best Actor’ not once, but twice! So, where did Brad Pitt master his art? Not at university, apparently! The actor went to the University of Missouri to study journalism, although he never actually graduated as he dropped out just two credits short.

Elizabeth Banks

Prior to her successful acting career, which has seen her play roles in over forty movies including the Hunger Games series, Pitch Perfect and Spider-Man, Elizabeth Banks – you guessed it! – went to university. She studied at the University of Pennsylvania and had the full university experience- being part of a sorority and graduating as magna cum laude in 1996. Following this, she went onto further study and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in 1998 from the American Conservatory Theatre.

Jodie Foster

Jodie Foster had to wait over forty years for her star on the infamous Hollywood Walk of Fame, but she finally reached the level in 2016. She’s had a long and successful career, winning two ‘Best Actress’ Oscars for her parts in The Accused and The Silence of the Lambs. Foster’s career started young, with major role in Taxi Driver when she was just 12, but she still managed to attend Yale University and complete her bachelor’s degree in Literature – although she did have to take a semester off for her career.

Will Ferrell

Will Ferrell has made his career from being hilarious in hit movies like Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Step Brothers and, of course, the family-favourite Christmas gem Elf. However, his degree choice was pretty unusual. The star studied a bachelor’s degree in ‘sports information’ at the University of Southern California way back in 1990.  Apparently, he was quite the sportsman back then and was part of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Emma Watson

Best known for her role as bookish Hermione in the Harry Potter series, it seems that Emma Watson is every bit as intelligent in real life. She was part of the class of 2014 and studied English literature at Brown University in Rhode Island. She sometimes struggled with getting her fellow students to accept her as one of them, but that didn’t stop her from graduating with honours and even being part of the rowing team for a short period of time!

Review of Thor: Ragnarok; LBJ

Thor: Ragnarok; LBJ

An endlessly entertaining blend of light-hearted humor and exciting action, Thor: Ragnarok is not only the best entry in the Thor series but also one of the best superhero films from either  Marvel or DC, for that matter.

The comic soul of the franchise is Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, the handsome, confident, occasionally pompous hero armed both with super-strength and a disarming way with dialogue (whether it’s at his own expense or used to sway others). He’s abetted in no small way by Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Thor’s clever brother equally capable of self-serving treachery or allegiance (although leaning always toward treachery).

In this installment, the squabbling siblings have to contend with the imminent death of their father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and the rise of their long-banished sister Hela (Cate Blanchett), who by the way has powers more than comparable to Thor’s, as well as what seems to be an infinite capacity to destroy (she is the Goddess of Death, after all). Through a series of misadventures (involving some surprise guest appearances),  both brothers end up on the planet Sakaar, with Thor being captured and groomed to be a gladiator while Loki has ingratiated himself with the Sakaar’s ruler, the Grandmaster, an energetic, glib, quirky Jeff Goldblum-type–played by Jeff Goldblum, no less. The Grandmaster, along with his underlings, presides over a waste-ridden planet and a culture that thrives on contests between so-called champions in large stadiums. It is here that Thor must call on former allies (as in a fellow Avenger), cultivate new allies (like Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Korg, a rock-like (literally) gladiator/rebel voiced by the director Taika Waititi—and a veritable scene-stealer at that. Meanwhile, on Thor’s home planet, Hela is wreaking havoc on the remaining inhabitants, with the promise of worse to come.

What sets Thor: Ragnarok above the others is how seamlessly it shifts its tonal gears, with its crosscutting between Thor’s light-hearted adventures on Sakaar and the savagery depicted on Asgard (courtesy of Hela with help from her conflicted accomplice, Karl Urban’s Skurge). It’s not only a credit to the superb helming by new-to-the-franchise director Waititi, but also the humorous and heartfelt screenplay from Eric Pearson, Craig Kyle and Christopher Yost.  Their efforts not only give Hemsworth the opportunity to fully come into his own as the magnetic hero, but provide ample opportunities for others to shine, either through short but clever cameos (no spoilers here), or an insightful variation on a previous appearance, as in not only Loki, but another Avenger who supplies another layer of both conflict and emotion—and whom I’ll leave you to discover on your own, Trust me though, Thor: Ragnarok is worth the trip.

LBJ

It’s worth seeing LBJ just to see how Woody Harrelson manages to turn in a riveting performance despite being saddled with layers and layers of make-up that have him resembling the character actor Thayer David (of Nero Wolfe fame) more than the crafty, conflicted, pragmatic President Lyndon Baines Johnson. Director Rob Reiner’s film cuts back and forth between the day of President John Kennedy’s assassination and the difficulties facing Johnson as he attempts to make his mark in the potentially thankless job of Vice-President. After Kennedy’s assassination, LBJ (who, in the film, believes he is being gradually phased out) is now faced with the difficult task of advancing Kennedy’s Civil Rights platform, especially since this means either swaying or alienating Southern allies (embodied by a Georgia senator nicely played by Richard Jenkins). Indeed the most interesting sections concern the interactions between Harrelson and Jenkins, as Jenkins tries to make Harrelson’s Johnson remember what the South was about—while an enlightened Johnson tries to make the case for change and being on “the right side of history.” LBJ does move at a good clip and –mainly through Harrelson’s performance, holds the viewer’s attention, but one can’t help feeling that the movie is a little too hurried and ends a little too abruptly–indeed the montage depicting Johnson’s efforts to get the Civil Rights bill passed resembles a heavy-handed coming attraction.

Yaeji “Drink I’m Sippin on”

We’re listening to Yaeji’s single “Drink I’m Sippin on” from her second album simply titled EP2.

Yaeji has a funky approach to house music, creating a style that’s just, well, Yaeji. Her airy vocals flow easily from Korean to English and back again. While her voice isn’t the belt-it-out, soulful voice we normally gravitate to, it’s surprisingly calming, soothing even. Mixed with her simple house beats, her voice is kind of sexy, in a kooky way.

{youtube}xoxCItHxLiM{/youtube}

The new single is in both English and Korean but that’s what makes us slide to it. The chorus “그게 아니야” / “Geu-Gae ah-nee-ah” (“That’s not it”) is super catchy. It’s a guaranteed sing-a-long, no matter what language is your first. Yaeji basically sums up why we love music from around the globe in her GENIUS interview:

“It’s very much a feeling, and language is so limiting. To limit those feelings into words is really hard, which is why it helps for me to use two languages, because I feel I have a larger spectrum of tools to work with to describe what I’m trying to say, but it’s very much a feeling for me, too. It’s hard for me to put it into words, which is why I often abstract a lot of my lyrics.”

What do we listen to that’s not in English?

A lot, actually. Maybe it’s because we work with international young artists that we’re exposed to an eclectic mix of music. (Thanks, students!) Our playlists include Italian hip hop, Kpop, French soul, German rap, lots of reggaeton and anything with a fresh beat that grabs us and makes us move. When we heard J Balvin on 97.1, we double checked whether it was our phone or the radio. Slowly, too slowly in our opinion, the U.S. musical tastes are growing up and out. The U.S. market is huge and we can handle (good) music from all over the universe. Bilingual music may help, collabs with the Queen B and Justin B will definitely help – hello/hola “Mi Gente,” “Despacito.” But no matter what the language, good music is good music. We’ll leave cracking the U.S. music market to the experts and just tell you about some awesome new music we’re listening to.

Here’s a bonus, a nice treat, Yaeji’s Drake “Passionfruit” cover.

{youtube}p45fsJdjN4M{/youtube}

Keep making music that makes us move.

NoHo Fringe Presents: Magic 8 Ball, My Life with Asperger’s

NoHo Fringe Presents: “Magic 8 Ball, My Life with Asperger’s”

Running November 6th – 12th at Acme Theatre & Studios, 5124 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601

This one-man show, part of the NoHo Fringe festival, is a fascinating walk in the shoes of an actor with Asperger’s.

George Steeves brings us deep into his world of awkward and adorable with an openness and an honesty that belies belief.  Few of us can really understand how difficult it can be growing up with what might seem to us to be limitations, but George manages to illuminate his life while he shares memories both terrible and wonderful.  His courage to follow his dreams is humbling and inspiring.

George moved to LA several years ago.  A trip many have taken, but for George, it must have been all the more daunting.  Yet he fills the stage with nothing but joy as he describes his journey and his continuing search for success in acting and music.  This performance is funny and engaging, sometimes sad but continually entertaining.  He sings, he shares moments that shaped him and he portrays a strength and wisdom that few possess.

One man shows are tough to pull off, especially autobiographical ones, but this gentle, intelligent and talented man has created something truly special. With the help of his two directors, Crystal and Penni Wilson, this show, which won several awards at the Hollywood Fringe this year, deserves to be noticed and, who knows, more awards even?

There are some interesting uses of mixed media, and yes, there is an actual 8 ball driving the narrative.  George is brilliantly frank and has such a gift at communicating his frustrations and his feelings about his life with humor and grace.  I came away knowing so much more about Asperger’s, but the play isn’t just about that, not at all.  Magic 8 Ball is a play about determination, focus and self-belief, and we can all do with some of that right now.

I highly recommend “Magic 8 Ball, My Life With Asperger’s”

Running November 6th – 12th at Acme Theatre & Studios, 5124 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601

Is Hollywood Really A Hub For Plastic Surgery?

Is Hollywood Really A Hub For Plastic Surgery?

Hollywood and plastic surgery seem to go hand in hand. Ever since the golden age of film making, there has been a big plastic surgery scene. After all, stars are under huge pressure to look their best. But with cheaper options abroad, like a hair transplant in Turkey or a facelift in South Korea, is the city still a hub for plastic surgery?

Celebrity Confessions

Despite it being pretty obvious that just about every celebrity in Hollywood has gone under the knife at some point, it’s still rare for them to openly admit it. However, as plastic surgery becomes more socially acceptable, with a staggering 15.9 million cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the US in 2015, some celebrities are opening up about the work they have had done.

Singer Iggy Azalea spoke candidly about having a nose job in Seventeen magazine. She claimed that plastic surgery was “an emotional journey” and that it was equally hard to cosmetically change your flaws as it was to live with them. It’s not the first time the star has had surgery either. In April 2017, she had her breasts enlarged to stop her struggling to find costumes that fit.

Chrissy Teigen is another star that’s been open about the fact she’s had a ‘Hollywood makeover’. She laughed as she stated that all of her facial features were fake, except from her cheeks!

With so many celebrities starting to talk about the work they’ve had done, the number of plastic surgery procedures in Hollywood is only set to rise.

High Quality Surgeons

With such a high demand from the Hollywood giants for top procedures, it’s hardly surprising that some of the best plastic surgeons can be found in Los Angeles. Of the hundreds of plastic surgeons available in California, over 100 made the peer-rated ‘US News List of Top Doctors’ and 32 of these made the list of ‘Americas Top Doctors’, suggesting that Hollywood locals really do pay for quality when they visit some of the world’s most technologically advanced practices.

Cheaper Alternatives

Despite the growing number of celebrities admitting to having work done, and the presence of some of the best surgeons in the world, medical tourism has seen a growing number of plastic surgery hotspots popping up around the world.

Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is home to some of the world’s top surgeons and clinics. The region is popular for medical tourists, who are looking for quality treatment at half the cost of American or European prices and, with luxury hotels in abundance, there are definitely worse places to recover! Approximately 500,000 cosmetic surgery treatments are carried out in the country each year and surgeons travel from around the world to train, so it’s clear that Rio is quickly becoming the world’s top destination for plastic surgery. Popular procedures include tummy tucks, face lifts and breast enhancements.

Aside from Rio de Janeiro, plenty of other countries are home to thriving cosmetic surgery industries. Turkey, South Korea and UAE are among those developing their healthcare facilities and providing top quality treatments at affordable prices. Hollywood may still be a hub for cosmetic surgery, particularly among the rich and famous, but it’s far from the only destination to be.

What’s The WORD at The Road?

Mark your calendars for The WORD onMonday nights at The Road Theatre in the NoHo Arts District.

Did you know? In addition to a full season of shows, The Road does a free Monday night reading series called The WORD.

“THE WORD is the first step for The Road Theatre Company to hear new works and it gives the company and the public a “first look”. Plays are meant to be heard and performed and this helps with the development of the play and sees if it translates from the page. The next phase would be our Summer Playwrights Festival, our Off Road, a few of the ways we have to help create new theatre and fulfill The Road Theatre Company’s mission statement.” Carlyle King, director of The Word Road Theatre Company artistic board member.

November 13th: The Death and Life of Mary Jo Kopechne

The WORD at the Road Theatre www.nohoartsdistrict.com

by By Peter Lefcourt

Directed by Terri Hanauer

Featuring: John Cragen, Richard Herd, Brian Ibsen, Ivy Khan, Tom Musgrave and Anna Zak

It’s 2:30 A.M, July 19th, 1969, twenty-four hours before astronauts land on the moon. Senator Edward M. Kennedy has driven his car into a pond on Chappaquiddick Island. He manages to escape; his 28-year-old passenger, Mary Jo Kopechne, does not. Panicked, he returns to his hotel room, and while waiting for his blood alcohol to fall below the DUI level so he can report the accident and explain what he was doing with a young, unmarried woman en route to the beach at midnight, he is visited by his two dead brothers, JFK and RFK, and his stroke-ridden father, who help him do damage control and attempt to salvage his political career. An hour later, another unexpected guest shows up. Soaking wet.

This is the latest work from Princess Grace Award, Helen Merrill Playwriting Award, and New Dramatists member, James McManus.”

Times change, but life in the theatre remains the same: chaotic, sometimes brutal, but often euphoric. AND AWAY WE GO jumps through time from backstage in ancient Athens to a rehearsal at the Globe, from Versailles’ Royal Theatre to the first reading of a new play by Chekhov– with an unlikely stop at Corral Gables FL and the American premiere of Waiting for Godot along the way. “Terrence McNally plants a big wet kiss on his lifetime love– the theatre. A frolicsome valentine to the glorious, maddening, demanding world of footlights, spotlights and ghost lights”– New York Times

Understanding and Managing Your Credit Score

Understanding and Managing Your Credit Score

Your credit score is a number that lenders use to gauge how likely you will be to repay your debts on time.

As an informed consumer, you can make yourself more attractive to lenders by taking steps to boost your credit score.

Your FICO® Score: The Standard Measure

The FICO® Score (an acronym for its creators, the Fair Isaac Corporation) is a standard gauge lenders use to measure a consumer’s credit risk. According to myFICO.com, 90% of top lenders use FICO scores when making lending decisions. A typical credit score will range between 300 and 850 points. Although all lenders make decisions based on the particulars of the lending situation, generally speaking, the higher your credit score, the lower the perceived risk to the lender, the more attractive the interest rate you may be offered, and the more money you may save over time.

For instance, at current rates, a borrower with a credit score of between 760 and 850 can expect to pay a rate of 3.174% on a 30-year, $200,000 fixed-rate mortgage, according to myFICO.com’s Loan Savings Calculator. By contrast, an individual with a score of between 620 and 639 can expect a rate of 4.763%, which amounts to an extra $183 in monthly payments and an additional $65,797 in total interest paid over the life of the mortgage.1

Key Factors

The three major credit reporting agencies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — compile credit scores based on information provided by creditors. These agencies generate scores using a proprietary formula that assigns weightings to five main factors:

  • Payment history (whether you have missed or been late with any credit payments). On-time payments are an important component of your credit score. Using your credit responsibly and paying bills on time are great ways to maintain a good credit score.
  • Credit utilization. Credit utilization is defined as the total debt you have divided by the total available credit that is available to you. High credit utilization can be a warning sign of credit risk.
  • Length of credit history (how long various accounts have been open). Credit history is a significant component of your credit score. Accordingly, the average age of your credit cards can be a strong indication of your credit history. Care should be used in keeping old accounts open and in good standing.
  • The amount of new credit on your record. While opening one new credit card might be normal, opening several in a short span of time could be a warning sign to potential creditors that something is amiss in your financial life.
  • Mix of credit accounts. Both the total number of credit accounts you have and the mix of credit you have will affect your credit score. A healthy mix of revolving credit cards, charge cards, installment loans and mortgages will also impact your credit score.

What’s in a Score?

The percentages in the chart below reflect how important each of the five main categories is in determining how your FICO score is calculated.

Hot Dog on a Stick – Janet Bernson

So what is the them of the show and how did came up with it?

The pieces are mixed media, combining the items from to-go containers with other trash I have found and stories/poems/rants.

I’ve awakened myself to how much takeout and “disposable” trash I consume and what’s lying around in my immediate environment. It’s not because I never thought about it. I’ve been using discards to make art for quite awhile. But this year I chose to focus more deeply and work with the thoughts in and around our disposable society.

The art is all different. I am eclectic in my approach. There is humor, politics, satire, poetry, interwoven in the exhibit.

What’s your background?

I’ve been an expressive arts facilitator/therapist for about 30 years, working with trauma survivors in shelters, transitional facilities, probation….etc. I also wrote plays and directed theatre here in the NoHo in the nineties – at the Bitter Truth Theatre which is now the FAT DOG!

When my husband died from cancer five years ago I knew it was I who needed to heal myself from the trauma of caregiving and grief. Much of the work I have done since has been an outgrowth of my internal process and subsequent transformation.

Gaia – Janet Bernson

Why did you choose Theatre 68 as your exhibit space?

My husband, Max Middleton, was a member of Theatre 68. Artistic Director, Ronnie Marmo, was so supportive through our journey. When I told Ronnie I wanted to do an art show – he said “let’s do it here” he was all for it. Theatre 68 has two great spaces – one with raked seats and the other the Flex. The Flex is perfect for exhibiting my art.

Give a Big Smile (and Welcome) to CDC Dental Center

Welcome to the NoHo CDC Dental Center!

We like to welcome our new businesses to the North Hollywood neighborhood because, after all, it’s the people who make our neighborhood shine. Our as the www.nohartsdistrict.com defacto motto has become:

“NoHo is only as great as its people.”

The CDC Dental Center  is a lovely family operated, and family oriented dental office tucked away in the Bellingham shopping center just off Victory Blvd., right behind our local Sears.

This is one of those hidden gems that thankfully proliferates our neighborhood. A spacious 4,200-square-feet of exam rooms and a surgical theatre that covers every conceivable dental treatment from tooth whitening and cleaning to root canals, porcelain crown, dental implants and full mouth reconstructions. A one-stop shop of dentistry. Also, CDC Dental Center has an entire Orthodontic department to accommodate anyone needing braces, including conventional braces, porcelain braces, and Invisalign.

dental

The charming Dr. Roland Yakubov is a gentle and softly spoken man, quick to smile and very welcoming. He moved into the deceptively large space in 2013 and built the 14 treatment rooms and an ample front lobby, complete with colorful children’s play area, with his own hands… now that’s dedication!

He began his training specializing in children dentistry, so if you are a particularly apprehensive adult, he’s the dentist for you. If you can make a kid comfortable in a dentist chair, then adults are no problem! He has a team of kind and calming assistants, ready to put the most anxious patient at ease.

A North Hollywood native Dr. Yakubov and his caring staff pride themselves in building relationships with their patients and their patient’s families.

Dr. Yakubov considers his patient’s dental health to be just as important as their general health and encourages regular checkups and conscientious cleaning habits. A healthy mouth is a happy mouth, and that is precisely what Dr. Yakubov works so hard to achieve.

Going to the dentist is not most people’s favorite thing to do, but if you have a dentist that genuinely cares and treats you like family, then what used to be a chore can become, if not a pleasure, assuredly much more enjoyable.

A visit to the CDC Dental Center will bring a smile to your face, and, if you let them, they will make your smile wider and brighter and healthier.

CDC Dental Center, under its parent company New Star Dental, is about to expand, twice! Opening offices in Toluca Lake and Westlake Village. Dr. Yakubov and his professional team are about to become much busier!!

Pitfire Does Fall….L.A. Does Not….or Does It?

OK. Did they cancel fall? Yes, we think they did. But now it’s back on. Will it be summer again tomorrow? We never know. But, thankfully, we get fall at Pitfire Pizza.

We love the change of seasons, even if we only have 1.5 seasons in L.A.

But we do have the seasons at least in some delish dishes in our neighborhood. Pitfire Pizza’s fall seasonal  menu has arrived and it brings out the best of the season’s flavors and colors…even if you wear flip flops while devouring one of their dishes!

Here’s a snapshot (literally) of the Pitfire Pizza fall seasonal menu:

Meet Pitfire NoHo general manager Roy Wright.

Why did you choose to work with Pitfire?

Freshness and quality of the food. We set ourselves aside from mainstream restaurants with eclectic menu items with high quality ingredients. Also the unique seasonal items we bring each season. We always feature ingredients at the height of their season. For example in the summer Heirloom tomatoes. In the fall we feature brussel sprouts. I feel our atmosphere is inviting and comfortable. A place where you can get a high quality meal at a reasonable price.

Do you have any favorite dishes?

Yes the Field Mushroom Pizza with the enoki and crimini mushrooms along with the Fontina cheese. Honey Bear pizza which is sweet and spicy. I love the ricotta cheese and fennel sausage along with calabrian chiles. Also a drizzle of honey and Bee Pollen.

Which wine selections are you most excited about?

Honora Vera which is a young red wine from Spain that is medium bodied that pairs well with most of our pizza and pastas. Also the Monte delle Vigne Lambrusco from Italy. Pairs well with our Wood Roasted Pumpkin Pizza.

If you could bring back one dish, what would it be?

Pork Belly Sandwich and Murguez Sausage Pizza.

Are there any special events coming up this fall?

We have a literary crawl event  (LitCrawl L.A.) at our location on Wednesday, October 25th. Everyone included in the event presents a reading of their writings while enjoying a dinner at Pitfire for the evening.

Brewery Artwalk isn’t your “average” art show

LA Brewery Artwalk

LA Brewery Artwalk: the art show’s title itself indicates two of my favorite things: Art and walking. Kidding! Beer and art, of course!

LA Brewery Artwalk isn’t your “average” art show in many ways. Unlike typical exhibition openings and runs, Brewery Artwalk is only open twice per year, in the Spring, and in the Fall, for only one weekend at a time. This year’s Brewery Artwalk was open October 21st-22nd, 2017, 11:00am – 6:00pm. Brewery Artwalk is an “open studio weekend”, where artists actually inhabit and live in the confines of the former Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery. Yes, I (among many others) toured over 100 individual artists’ homes to look at the studio art they’ve produced and are selling.

Also radically unlike your typical art exhibition runs, Brewery Artwalk’s open studio weekend was located at the world’s largest art complex. In 1982, the PBR Brewery became home to live/work artists’ spaces, since the passing of the Artist-in-Residence code permitted artists to rent in industrially zoned buildings. The Brewery rented only to artists, and to this day, the Brewery Artwalk only rents to artists. In July 1997, LA Weekly cited the Brewery Artwalk as the “world’s largest artist-in-residence community”, and later in 1999, LA Times quoted The Brewery as being the “world’s largest art complex.”

Spanning the Brewery’s 16 acre campus, over 100 studios were open for the Brewery Artwalk. Two days were definitely needed to see everything since, in a span of twenty feet, you were able to walk through a number of apartments/galleries.

At Brewery Artwalk, people were able to see new work, speak with the artists, purchase artwork directly from the artist studios, and curate your new list of favorite artists.

The Brewery Artwalk varied greatly in the media it offered: painting, sculpture, architecture/interior/landscape, ceramics, mixed media, fashion/costume/jewelry, design/illustration/printmaking, performance/installation, photography, gallery, artisan/applied arts, and video/multimedia works.

Truth be told, the sheer volume of art that was available for viewing was overwhelming. There’s a nice mix of specializations and functional versus strictly visual art, so I did get the sense that there was something for everyone. You just had to sieve through the artist’s lofts to find your favorites. Since this was my first year going, it’ll be interesting to see which artists still hold studios at Brewery Artwalk, and if their expressions have changed from the last Brewery Artwalk.

Uniquely, I did hear one of the artists make a comment where he described attendees as “Lookie Lou’s”. My feeling is that Brewery Artwalk is free and open to the public, who art objectively is created to serve and be enjoyed by, and artist exposure and fan bases are built through large scale, free events like Brewery Artwalk. I would like to add, however, many of the other artists were very friendly and engaging, even all the way through Sunday, as each artist welcomed strangers into their home.

Future Brewery Artwalk – Spring 2018:

Brewery Artwalk happens twice per year – the next Brewery Artwalk will be Spring of 2018.
