Popular Cosmetic Surgeries Used By Celebrities

Popular Cosmetic Surgeries Used By Celebrities

Whilst natural beauty is loved by all, you can’t help but applaud the outstanding work performed by cosmetic surgeons, which is often seen on our favourite celebrities, such as Jennifer Aniston, Iggy Azalea and Naomi Campbell. For many, cosmetic surgery is a method of increasing confidence, allowing females and males to enter public feeling on top of the world. Cosmetic surgery is carried out in a range of ways these days, from using radio frequency to injections, all aiming to reduce the need for going under the knife. So, to start looking like your favourite celebrities, read on to learn about the cosmetic surgeries that they have!

Botox

I think everyone understands how popular Botox is within Hollywood, and it’s hardly surprising considering the results that you get with minimal fuss! Botox is able to smoothen out your skin, eliminating those pesky wrinkles above your eyebrows or around your mouth. Over the years, people have scrutinised Botox and how fake it can make your face look, but the procedure has come a long way over the years, making your complexion look as seamless as ever! Celebrities such as Cameron Diaz and Amanda Seyfried have embraced the Botox that they have received, praising how confident it can make a lady feel.

Lip Fillers

People are always commenting on how they’d love lips like Angelina Jolie, but they can with one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries of all time – lip fillers! In recent years, we’ve seen the likes of Kylie Jenner taking the world by storm with her plump, full lips, which many people are extremely jealous over. Truth is, they aren’t difficult to achieve at all, with simple lip injections giving your lips a fuller treatment. So, rather than creating the illusion of fuller lips with your lip liner, you can now have them for a lifetime, all thanks to the incredible non-invasive treatments available within the cosmetic industry today!

Butt Lifts

Some of us just aren’t born with a butt, and to put it plainly, it really sucks. Thanks to cosmetic surgery though, we can have a fuller bum with just a few appointments at the clinic. Celebrities such as Nicki Minaj have undergone such cosmetic treatments, and they all appear extremely satisfied with the end result. A fat graft is usually the procedure used to enhance your bum, but for those with minimal fat on their body, silicone butt augmentation is usually the norm. Either way, you can be rest assured that your bum will fill out your favourite pair of jeans after your butt lift!

Cheek Fillers

One of the biggest trends of recent years is cheek bones (is there anything Angelina Jolie can’t do?), and now we can ditch the contour and have them for good with cheek fillers! The older that we become, the less volume we have in the cheekbones, so a quick filler can really give our faces a little pick-me-up. Not only do cheek fillers generally lift the face, but they’re also able to soften out the complexion and make our skin look that bit more flawless. Kim Kardashian is one celebrity to undergo the cosmetic procedure, as well as Megan Fox and Daryl Hannah, so to start looking like these huge icons, consider some of these spectacular procedures!

How To Create A Beautiful Garden

How To Create A Beautiful Garden

It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is – you can always keep your garden looking thriving and beautiful. Whether you decide to invest in the highest quality teak garden furniture, or you simply want to add a pop of colour to make your garden stand out, there are a range of ways in which you can keep your garden looking fresh and unique. Gardens are the prime place to hang out with your family, whether that’s over a BBQ or a sophisticated family meal, so you should always make the most out of the space that you have. But how can you make it truly beautiful?

Use Seasonal Plants

Many people are often under the illusion that winter time means a dull garden with no plants, but this is totally wrong! Whilst several plants do struggle to thrive in the colder, harsh weather, there are still many beautiful plants that live better in these conditions, such as winterberry, camellia and heather, all adding a pop of colour to your garden whilst everywhere else outside is run down and bare. Not only will using plants all year round make your garden gorgeous and colourful, but it will also allow you to appropriately theme your garden! It’s autumn time? That’s alright, you can just plant some crocuses and begonias to add a warm, orange colour to your garden, without the high maintenance. We promise all of your guests will be impressed!

Have A Staple Piece Of Garden Art

Whether this be a statue or a breath-taking water fountain, you need to make it stand out! Staple garden art can completely change the look of your garden, and even if you’re not an avid gardener yourself, garden art can make your garden look beautiful with a minimal amount of effort! Depending on your style, this garden art can take whatever form you like, but always make sure that it complements the rest of your garden. For example, if you have an Aztec theme running throughout your outdoor space, placing a giant Victorian statue in the middle of your garden might not be the best choice when aiming for a beautiful garden.

Mix Up Your Textures

Having said that, mixing up the textures within your garden can often have a very pleasing effect on the eye, but only if you do it correctly. Keeping a theme is still crucial, but the materials used can differ to add a different dimension to your garden. For example, you might have a wooden gazebo placed in the corner of your garden, but to add something extra to this garden piece, why not place stone flower pots in the corner, filled with exotic flowers? Not only will this add extra colour, but it will also accentuate each piece due to their differing textures.

Avoid Clutter

I’m sure we can all agree that getting carried away in a garden centre is all too easy, but sometimes you have to step back from that vase or garden gnome and think “do I really need it?” When it comes to gardens, less can sometimes mean more, and cluttering your garden with ornaments and plants can completely ruin the effect that you were going for. To keep your garden beautiful, always ensure that you buypieces that will compliment others, and not just because you like it.

Keeping Your Dog/Cat Safe and Happy during Christmas!

Keeping Your Dog/Cat Safe and Happy during Christmas!

Holidays are here soon and you want to make sure your Fur Baby has a good time and is not harmed by all the festivities.

Keep your pet away from these items to ensure there are no unplanned trips to the vet:

– Secure the tree to the wall

– Tree water has bacteria

– Mistletoe, Holly, tinsel and tree ornaments are poisonous

– Lights, wires, batteries and unattended candles can burn

– Guests should not leave alcoholic beverages unattended

– No human food treats as well as bones

– Keep stockings out of reach of pets who love chocolate

– Rethink Christmas gifts under the tree – they can choke on ribbon

STRESS

Holidays bring stress to animals as well as humans.  It’s not easy for pets to have strangers coming in your house.

Try these stress reduction techniques:

– Exercise pet as close to the time you have a guest coming over which will help reduce any anxiety.

– Keep pet on a leash when making introductions.

– Ask guests not to pet your dog and avoid giving them any human food as a treat.

– Give pet his/her own quiet space while the festivities are happening…fresh water and a blanket/bed.

Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas to your two-legged and four-legged family members

AMAs – BTS; Bruno Mars; Pink and the winners and losers

The winners and losers of the AMAs

BTS (Beyond The Scene) made more than an appearance on the AMAs 2017, they made history as the first K-POP act to appear on the AMAs ever.

BTS has their “army” of devoted fans to thank in part because of their hard work pushing their favorite act to hit the big time by scoring spots on many television shows and storming the sacred gates to the AMAs. They were spotted at Warner Bros. Studios as well its neighbor NBC Universal Studios. From “Ellen” to “Jimmy Kimmel” there they were promoting their current LP release for their “Wings” tour.

This seven-piece ensemble of internationally famous teenage boys wowed the crowds with their performance of “DNA” while rendering up a very flashy choreographed show that had Jared Leto and The Chain Smokers agog. The audience, as well as the BTS “army” were going wild over BTS by chanting for them which is a tradition in South Korea when an act is liked. The better the band, the louder the chant.

I first became aware of BTS during KCON 2016 as there were a lot of their fans wearing their merchandise as well as lots of BTS merchandise for sale. They were also apart of the “Fan Engagement” series at KCON 2017 as well as appearances at KCONs around the world for the past few years.

BTS has described 2017 as an “amazing year” for them due to all the recognition they have received this year and have been greeted by an overwhelming response wherever they appear. BTS has also made history by being the first K-POP act in history to crack the Billboard Top 100 and staying on it for 40 weeks.

It is important to not confuse Psy’s “Gangnam Style” win at the AMAs in 2012 as K-POP, it isn’t.

Although Psy did win an award at the AMAs for Best Pop single he is considered a “novelty” act by a majority of hard core K-POP fans. That doesn’t mean he didn’t bring a lot to the table of K-POP…he did. He was recognized by Guinness World Records, most liked video at the time on YouTube, Best Video at the MTV European Music Awards and raked in 13.4 million dollars for Korea’s audio sector. This success led to South Korea’s expanding their K-POP music industry overseas. Psy/Gangnam Style is also credited with adding a surplus of 2.3 billion dollars in the first nine months of 2012, compared to a 4.5 billion dollar deficit the year before.

Methinks it was smart of South Korea to lift their ban on rock n’ roll in 1994.

With this info, it is safe to credit Psy’s “Gangnam Style” with playing a large role in the movement of the “Korean Wave” and only time will tell if BTS AKA the “Bangtan Boys” will have the impact that Psy did with “Gangnam Style”, after all, BTS didn’t win an award, they just performed. International Stars yes, international awards yes…but up to now not here. Let’s keep an eye on BTS next year.

In order to experience the phenomenal audience response to BTS, I was forced to sit through the entire AMA 2017 show which did offer up more than a few performances and attire that attracted my attention. You know you’re getting old when you only know who a few of the new acts are. Had to look them up when the show was over, but not as many as you might think though.

BTS aside, I think that the best and most entertaining performance was Pink. She blew my mind dancing on the side of a hotel building in Los Angeles while singing “Beautiful Trauma.” As I watched her and the background dancers I kept asking how much those dancers got paid for the gig. I decided that it was the scale rate because of the ability to put that feat on one’s resume must be worth the danger. Amazing performance Pink.

Bruno Mars was as entertaining as usual and can always be relied upon to put out a really great performance.

Mars won a slew of awards: Fave Pop Artist, Fave Male Soul/R&B Artist, Fave Male Pop/Rock Artist and Video of The Year. Mars does have his detractors, but can they say that they have won as many awards as he has? Can they say that the people he is supposed to have ripped off made as many awards? I think of Mars as a James Brown on steroids.

I gotta say, wardrobe can make an act, or make one want to put them out of one’s misery and so it was with Actress Chrissy Metz (“This Is Us”) and singer Kelly Clarkson…please. Whoever picked out the wardrobe for these two talented women needs to go back to design school and relearn how to dress women of a certain size. There is no excuse for dressing Ms. Metz in a dress that looked as if it had come straight from Omar the Tent Maker and covering Clarkson up in a feathered cape that had me wondering if she was going to sneeze or fly off. Clarkson offered up quite a flawless performance, but who would know as everyone was wondering the same thing as I was…does the wardrobe consultant hate women of a certain size? One friend that was also watching the show and texting me said that “there is only so much you can do.” I don’t accept that.

The absolutely worst performance by far was that of Christina Aguilera singing a medley of Whitney Houston’s hits. Pink’s face said it all.

Ouch. On the AMA’s page it stated that Aguilera’s performance was done “flawlessly,” I must ask were they watching the same show that I was? Off key and too much gospel warbling to cover up her inability to hit the notes that she needed to was more than Pink or I could take. It’s been noted that Houston has been said to have stated she felt that Aguilera sang her songs the best. How long ago was that? Didn’t see any evidence of that on November 19th.

Diana Ross closed the AMAs with a medley of her hits which was a real treat and brought back many fond memories of her music as well as her film performances.

Ross’ voice was in fine shape and she looked marvelous. She won the AMA’s Lifetime Achievement Award with grace and aplomb. She brought up her extended family onto the stage and it was so nice to see the diversity of her large family. There were a few children that made me wonder if they were going to grow up as performers. Ross’ daughter Tracee Ellis Ross of “Black-ish” fame hosted the event this year and she was so funny and refreshing that I had to laugh. Lots of wardrobe changes.

There were other awards handed out as well some of which were: The Chain Smokers won the Fave Electronic Dance Music Artist; Niall Horan won New Artist of The Year. Among underwhelming performances was Selina Gomez and Ed Sheeran lost his bid for an award to Bruno Mars. Found Nick Jonas’ performance interesting even though whenever I see him I wonder who he going with now; as well as Imagine Dragons who won the Fave Pop/Rock Group but lost Fave Alternative Group to Linkin Park who provided a moving speech and surprised award presenter Mark Cuban by coming and dedicated the award to their frontman Chester Bennington. “Always appreciate what you got and make Chester proud” was their tribute to Chester. My fave songs done by them are “Set Fire To The Rain” and “Burn It Down.” This is an act that I first got to know on “Myspace” and we had many lively exchanges there… RIP Chester. For those of you that do not know and were living under a rock or freeway Chester committed suicide on July 20, 2017. The collaboration of Imagine Dragons and Khalid was a fun performance of “Young, Dumb & Broke.” Khalid won the award for Artist to Watch.

When I had an account with “Myspace” Lady Gaga hooked up with me and I reciprocated. The next thing I know I’m getting threats from Gaga’s “Monsters” if I don’t send on some stupid chain letter…sorry Gaga I am not interested. Gaga did win the Fave Pop/Rock Female award and sang “The Cure” with a flurry that I’m sure her “monsters” deeply adored or else. Cold Play, famous for the conscious uncoupling event than took the news and TMZ by storm won for Tour of The Year.

Portugal. The Man made quite a first impression on their AMA debut with their snappy and funky biggest hit to date “Feel It Still.”

With a computer in the background telling the audience “No computers up here. Just Live instruments” they did leave quite a feast impression and will be keeping an eye on them in 2018.

It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play

I thoroughly enjoyed “It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play,” which I saw this past Sunday afternoon at Theatre Unleashed in NoHo.

It was my first visit there and I am looking forward to going back. This production is perfect, good old fashion, holiday entertainment for the entire family. The cast is excellent and the story is very enjoyable, heartwarming and well worth seeing. The show plays til December 17.

It is performed in conjunction with A Very DIE HARD Christmas as part of their Naughty and Nice Holiday rep and returns with a whole new cast of colorful and talented performers. It’s a Wonderful Life: The Radio Play is well adapted by Jim Martyka and centers on struggling New York City radio station KAWL in the 1940s on the verge of going out of business. Their radio production of Frank Capra’s “It’s a Wonderful Life” is destined to be their last but, like in the classic movie version, it is the holiday season and beautiful miracles are abound. The feel-good, homespun show is full of laughs, drama, fine singing, and good values and is well directed by Jenn Scuderi Crafts.

It plays Thursdays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm at The Belfry Stage Upstairs at the Crown, 11031 Camarillo Street.

I highly recommend it. It is a pleasant trip to the past (great costumes) and a definite audience pleaser full of hope and good cheer.

A Dog Isn’t Just for Christmas – It’s for Life

Remember, a dog isn’t just a Christmas gift, a dog is a life-long commitment of love.

The holidays are a time for happiness.  We give gifts, spend time with family and friends, and try and forget about all the difficulties of the year gone by.

It’s a time to be thankful for what we have, remember those we love, especially those we have lost, and to look towards the future without the cynical lens we carry with us most of the time.  It’s also a time that we let our guards down, become more vulnerable and can sometimes make rash decisions, flush with the cheeriness of the season and perhaps a little too much fortified wine.

So when you have the urge to careen headlong into the fray, throw caution to the wind and bring a four-legged friend home, all fuzzy and licky and cute, remember, they are not there for a visit. A dog is for life.

Not that I don’t think it’s a wonderful idea.  I myself got two puppies six years ago in Utah while spending Christmas with my friends and they are still my best friends. I have absolutely no regrets.  But please consider all the potential repercussions, the mess, the problems, poop and everything else.  Because if you are not ready to have your life turned upside down, your pocketbook routinely emptied, your furniture covered in hair and occasionally your loafers chewed and pee’d on, then you are absolutely not ready.

Having said that, when are we ever ready for life’s messy miracles, both big, small and smelly?

So if you are seriously thinking about it, which means you are looking online, wondering about pet deposits and how much dog is 15lbs and, heaven forbid, searching for pet adoption events in your area, then here are a few tidbits of advice that, as a four dog person, I have to give…for free, which is about the last free thing you will get once you have a dog.

1. Adoption is the best option

California has just changed the law and pet stores are now only allowed to offer dogs that need rehousing, so no more puppy mill puppies!!  The reasons are clear. There are thousands of beautiful and not so technically beautiful dogs that need homes.  If you have the nerve to go anywhere near a pound or shelter then you will know this only too well.  If you have your heart set on a fresh little puppy, then I challenge you to visit a pound first and have it broken.  All these wonderful, lonely little loves are hoping for a home. Please take this route, at least at first.  You will find someone who needs you and will make your life complete…I guarantee it. http://www.laanimalservices.com

2. I really mean it when I say that dogs are for life.

The caveat to that is that you will have them for the length of their life, which is considerably shorter than ours.  So be prepared for a commitment of 10 – 15 years on average, which goes by in the blink of an eye and you will be blessed to have them in your life for as long as they are with you.  I once read that a little boy told his parents after they lost their dog to old age and everyone was feeling very sad, they were all wondering why it is that dogs aren’t with us very long.  He said,  “Humans spend their whole lives trying to be better people, but dogs are already better than all of us, so they don’t need to stay as long.”  But it’s worth the tears…a thousand fold.

3. Allergies.

If you have children, make sure they are not allergic to a breed that you want, this is very important and sometimes why pets end up in a shelter.  There are enough things to deal with in life, being allergic to your pet shouldn’t have to be one of them.  If your child is allergic to fur then find a breed that doesn’t have any! There are many, many breeds like this, much more than you might imagine.  Not just Bichon Frises either!! Some are manly dogs like Bedlington Terriers and Schnauzers.  Go to the American Kennel  Association for a full list. http://www.akc.org/about/faq-allergies/

3. Dogs aren’t cheap…but what is these days!?

You can find low-cost vets for vaccinations, checkups and even neutering, although if you go to the shelter the dog will already be neutered and up to date on shots.

There are all kinds of programs to help you keep the costs down, but be prepared to spend some money. Petco will become your new Armani. Also, understand that you if you want to travel you can, but it will cost you either in dog sitting, or plane fares or additional hotel  and fees.  You can get them passports now, and there are more and more airlines that allow dogs on flights with you. But it’s not cheap.  Then there’s the food, the fleas, the treats, the bling and the replacements to your shoes, furniture, cushions, plants, car interiors, walls…they can chew anything, and at times, your sanity.  “You should also think about insurance. Fortunately, there are also affordable pet insurance options, so that doesn’t have to be a big expense, while it’s a highly valuable one.”

But they love you, oh how they love you…and it’s all worth it.

4. Try and find a dog that fits your life and your space.

If you live in an apartment then maybe a breed that isn’t so energetic would be better for you, especially if you work all day…see above reference to chewing your stuff.  But Los Angeles is the city of dogs.  There are more dog parks and dog-friendly spaces than just about anywhere else on earth it seems, and you might be lucky enough to be able to take your dog to work even!  I know several people who do that.  So don’t rule anything out, especially if you are visiting pounds.  Sometimes the biggest dogs need the littlest action…think Great Danes.  It’s the sporting breeds like Spaniels or Labs that have more energy.  But if you have a garden then anything goes!  And don’t just go for looks, there are some mighty ugly dogs out there who are absolutely adorable and love can make even the craziest looking pooch a prince!

5. If you are getting a puppy for a gift, and you don’t personally know the puppies parents then be sure to vet the breeder.

Get as many recommendations as you can and meet the puppy’s mum and dad. There are wonderful breeders out there, but there a still many puppies mills masquerading as breeders, so beware. Like I said, I have bought puppies, but they were mutts and from the owners of the parents and both the last of their litters…oh, how I love them.  It’s also more likely that the dog could have problems if they are purebred, which is, of course, more costly in the long run and more importantly, potentially heartbreaking.  Giving a puppy as a gift might also backfire.  It might not be the right breed, they might not want a dog and you might end up getting called in a few weeks/months to come and pick it up.  So be warned!!  Never buy a puppy for someone else’s kids, even your grandkids, without first consulting the actual parents.

6. Lastly, be prepared to fall in love.

We all know love can be wonderful and it can also be messy…very messy.  But owning a dog can change your life for the better in so many ways I just don’t have the time to list them.  Mine drive me crazy and fill me with joy every single day, even when they make a mess, or eat my food when I answer the door, or lie right in my way and nearly kill me, or fall asleep on me so I can’t reach the remote, or knock over their water bowl as they rush to greet me, or eat their bed…again…or take up all the space on my bed, or run away when its bath time, or chase the cat, or bring me a dead bird/ squirrel/lizard, or roll in chicken poop, or piddle on something new in the house, or lie on my just vacuumed and washed couch after they have dug a hole in the dirt outside and rolled in it and especially when they all howl together at the fire truck sirens…very loudly and in my ear.

Dogs are the ‘joy’ in joyful, the ‘thanks’ in thanksgiving and the ‘mess’ in Christmas and they are the best decision you will ever make. Just accept them as they are, all hairy and slobbery and silly and perfect and they will never let you down.

A dog is not just for Christmas it’s true.  But in many ways, they personify the spirit of the season.  They LOVE.  No matter what and they do that forever…

How To Get A Shining Set Of Teeth Like A-List Celebs

How To Get A Shining Set Of Teeth Like A-List Celebs

In recent years, the dental health industry has erupted into a market beyond imagination, and getting a shining set of teeth like A-list celebrities is easier than ever thanks to advanced teeth whitening kits offered by reputable dentists across the world, including Finchley dentist . Find out how else you can get a set of teeth fit for Hollywood below.

Intense Light Whitening

Whitening with the use of intense light is the best way to get a shining set of teeth like A-list celebs with minimum discomfort. Whilst you will have to wear a mouthguard to ensure the gel doesn’t come into contact with your gums and you may experience a slight sensitivity for two to three days after the procedure, the final results are great! The dentist simply applies a bleaching gel on each tooth before exposing it to a timed period of intense light.

DIY Bleaching Kits

Over-the-counter bleaching kits are becoming increasingly popular, and depending on the brand you choose, your kit could cost you as little as £25.00! However, despite using the basic gum shield for an hour a day for two weeks as recommended, you may experience short-term sensitivity and mouth ulcers caused by the small amount of acid contained in the gel, and because the percentage of bleaching agent is so limited, continuous use of this product is required to see a noteworthy difference. In other words, you won’t get a shining set of teeth like your favourite A-list celeb overnight!

Professional Home Bleaching

Another way to get a shining set of teeth like A-list celebrities is to invest in professional home bleaching. The process involves visiting your dentist, who will take an accurate mold of your mouth in order to make a personalised mouthguard that slips over your teeth perfectly. Then, you must use a bleaching gel 7 nights in a row (or an hour each day for 14 days) to remove stains. Professional home bleaching is highly effective, and the results can last up to two years! Not bad for a quick and easy night time routine.

Veneers

Getting veneers is one of the most effective treatments used to achieve a set of teeth just like Tom Cruise, Hilary Duff, George Clooney and Victoria Beckham. Otherwise known as porcelain veneers, veneers are great for teeth that are worn, broken, chipped or for teeth with large gaps between them. Despite getting veneers sounding a little daunting, the process is simple. In order to complete the procedure for getting a dental veneer, you are required to attend at least two, three or four hours sessions. During these sessions, a small amount of tooth enamel will be shaved off and replaced with a porcelain edge.

Whitening Toothpastes

If you want to get a shining set of teeth like A-list celebrities, but are on a budget, don’t fear! Whitening toothpastes are a great way to keep your teeth as white as possible while you save for veneers or professional home bleaching. Plus, since the cost of whitening toothpaste can vary between a couple of pounds to as much as £20.00, you can find one that comfortably fits in your price bracket.

Our Ultimate Top Four Karaoke Spots in North Hollywood

Our Ultimate Top Four Karaoke Spots in North Hollywood

Those who have never used their brush as a mic while singing in the shower, raise your hand. There is a reason that karaoke is such a popular activity: nothing spells “fun night out with friends” quite like the collective embarrassment of singing “Hit Me Baby One More Time” on top of your lungs with your best mates by your side to cheer you on or join in a tribute to pop music.

Be the Frontman in Your Own Empty Orchestra!

Karaoke, which translates to “empty orchestra” in Japanese, is an ancient and honourable Friday night tradition – well, not exactly so, but it is more serious than you might think. The global karaoke market is estimated at a value of roughly $10 billion and its appeal has spilled over other markets, too. Gaming is karaoke’s best friend, both in terms of dedicated games like Sony’s SingStar for PlayStation (that allows up to 8 to bundle their efforts in team challenges on Party mode) or the Rock Band franchise, which allows for a group of friends to each choose to play different instruments on a given song, including singing the vocals. It has also provided inspiration for other types of games, as in the case of online slots like Karaoke Party which has a karaoke theme, all complete with boy bands and eccentric pop stars. Chinese automobile company Geely attracted worldwide attention when they decided to launch a new model (called Beauty Leopard and priced at $18,000) that came with an in-built karaoke machine (perfect for long road trips), while Northern Michigan’s Karaoke Cablets you choose from their collection of 550 CDs and over 6000 songs while they take you to your destination – or just around the city.

Karaoke is so popular that 2008 saw over 145,000 karaoke machines sold, and a further 84,000 were sold in 2016. It is no wonder then that karaoke remains an extremely beloved pastime – and no one knows how to do fun quite like North Hollywood. Here you will find some of the best karaoke joints in town – and to save you the trouble, we compiled the ultimate top 4 to visit when you are looking for something fresh and fun to do on a night out!

  1. The Other Door

Burbank Boulevard is the place to start, and more precisely number 10437: here you will find The Other Door, a beautifully decorated bar with a sort of old school vibe in the air. You will find two pool tables at the end of the bar and in the back a separate room that hosts their special nights: live gigs, comedy stand-up, DJing and the like. Every Monday night, the room is reserved for karaoke fanatics – and there are also themed karaoke nights or you could book the venue for a karaoke birthday! They run on a sign-me-up basis so you have to make sure you are on the schedule early as the place can get packed. If you are a bit shy, one of the KJs will offer to sing along a duet with you to help you get over that stage fright. And as you leave, pause by their vintage photo booth for a cheeky reminder of the night.

  1. The Good Nite

A little bit further down from the Other Door, at number 10721, you will find a hidden gem of a true karaoke bar. The Good Nite is devoted to karaoke and they do it properly: loud, blaring, fun and unexpected. You will catch the occasional patron with the incredible voice as well as the group of semi-drunk college students who decided it was a good idea to sing Eurovision songs – all packed in this North Hollywood spot. The bartenders are nice and the KJs know every song. They do karaoke almost every night of the week, starting at 9pm (9.30pm on Monday and Thursday, right after comedy gigs), which is very convenient for impromptu late night decisions – but make sure check their schedule beforehand to avoid disappointment.

  1. The Oaks Tavern

Situated at Sherman Oaks, at 13625 Moorpark St, the Oaks Tavern provides it all: a relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, knowledgeable bartenders, their signature “Shot Wheel of Death” – which you spin to determine what kind of shot you’ll be getting or even score a $5 booze deal – and lots of event nights. They do stand up comedy nights every Monday at 8pm and they really love it when the crowd is participating, which is why they have an open mic opportunity, and they do trivia nights every Wednesday and Sunday. But of course, every night is karaoke night, and it is their strongest point: they have countless songs for you to choose from, helpful KJs and a really good sound system to boost your singing. The best thing about this karaoke spot is perhaps the friendly reputation it has built over the years and the kind of crowd that it attracts: everyone is supportive and encouraging – and believe us, no one is going to judge you if you cannot imitate Axl Rose’s vocalizations down to the last bit!

  1. Ireland’s 32

Back at Burbank Boulevard, at number 13721, you will find the best Irish bar in town – and arguably, one of the best karaoke spots, especially if you fancy an Irish spin on things. They do karaoke every Tuesday and Sunday (starting at 9.30pm) and the rest of the days they have live bands, so you know that these people know a thing or two about a good sound system. They also have a great selection of draught beers, including of course Ireland’s sweetheart Guinness but also less famous option like Smithwick’s and 805.

So whether you are a karaoke fanatic or are just looking for something fun to do while you are in L.A., make sure to check out these cozy and welcoming spots for some happy sing-alongs with your best friends!

Measuring Your Retirement Plan’s Success

Measuring Your Plan’s Success

What spells success for a retirement plan? Any number of features and provisions may bolster a plan’s strength and put participants on a path toward a financially secure retirement.

Employees who are satisfied with their retirement plan may be less likely to seek employment elsewhere. And employers who promote plan participation and offer an appropriate selection of investment choices can potentially reduce the risk of running afoul of government regulations. You can evaluate the performance of your company’s retirement plan by examining various plan-related metrics.

What Should You Consider Measuring?

The specific metrics you choose to measure will depend on the type of plan you have, the data available to you, and other factors. Key items to look at in a 401(k) or similar plan might include:

  • Participation rate. How many and what percentage of eligible employees actually participate and contribute to the plan? This is a critical metric that can be further refined to determine the participation rates for employees in a specific age bracket or income range.
  • Contribution rate. It also may be useful to measure the average contribution rates for participants based on their ages or salaries.
  • Investment education. You can indirectly measure how investment education programs drive participation and contribution rates by tracking how often employees participate in seminars, meetings, and online tutorials that explain the various features offered by the plan.
  • Retirement readiness. What is the average account balance of participants (in dollars and as a multiple of annual income)? How many participants are on target to have enough in their plan accounts to replace a specified percentage (e.g., 75% or 85%) of their projected preretirement income at retirement? The greater the number, the more successful your plan.

What should you do with the data you have collected? First and foremost, evaluate the information in terms of your expectations for the plan. Also see if you can use the data to compare your plan to plans of a similar size and/or in a similar industry.

Why is benchmarking important? You can use the data you have collected from comparing your plan with other plans to help you establish plan goals. For example, if your research indicates that your plan has a 69% participation rate while the average benchmark rate for similar plans is 80%, you can establish a goal to boost your participation rate by 11% to bring it up to the average level within a certain time period.

Delving deeper into the data you have collected, your research may reveal, for example, that highly compensated employees contribute more (as a percentage of pay) to the plan than non-highly compensated employees. This difference potentially could cause the plan to have problems meeting IRS nondiscrimination rules. You would therefore want to encourage lower-paid employees to defer at the appropriate level.

Should the goals be set in stone? Not necessarily. The goals should be viewed as desirable objectives. The ultimate goal is to make the plan perform at the highest level possible. That takes time. The failure to attain a specific goal in an allotted time should not be viewed negatively.

Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra

Jamaica Moon Productions & The GGC Players Present: William Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra” at Gray Studios running through December 30 (Dark on December 24)

Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra” is a tragedy, a big one.

Lovers as powerful, antagonistic and used to getting their own way as these two are just bound for a sticky end and this play rather revels in the impending doom of these icons of history.

a&c7

This particular adaptation of what is a strangely, rarely seen play is something of a hybrid.  It’s fairly true to the RSC’s tried and tested version, but is positively littered with ironically and almost sadistically timed songs, soul, pop, rock and even a little jazz, all performed with the kind of full-on verve that one would find in the ‘rockest’ of operas.  It takes a lot of nerve to fashion such a ‘homage’ to such a famous story told by such an untouchable writer, but Gloria Gifford is nothing if she is not ambitious.

What this kind of ‘alternative’ Shakespearian production must live and die by in the end is its cast.  Particularly with regard to the roles of Antony, Cleopatra and Octavius Caesar.

So it is with delight that I can tell you that the actors that play these parts do so with a skill and gusto and more than a little sauciness well worthy of the stature of the roles.

This production soars from the first, never afraid to raise a few eyebrows and push the boundaries of theatre.  The costumes are impeccable and the set divine.  We are treated to so many musical interludes, all adeptly translating the mood of the moment, that they are too numerous to list.  Suffice it to say that songs that may have seemed an unlikely partner to ancient Mesopotamia and Rome are oddly not so and they all somehow elevate the romance, deepen the struggle, and they cannily give context to the classically themed maneuvering, mischief and melee.

A&C8 copy

Let’s be absolutely clear here. This is not your grandma’s Shakespeare.  What Ms Gifford brings to her interpretation of this iconic play is a refusal to be intimidated by the material, a joyous, unapologetic rendering of Cleopatra, one of Shakespeare’s most vividly and authentically drawn female characters and a very clever and relentless use of song to remind us that a couple of thousand years ago people were just as messed up, just as prone to ego worship and paranoia and just as enslaved to love as we are now.  In short, nothing ever really changes, and that is the beauty of Shakespeare, rock songs or not.

If you like your ‘bard’ with a little twist and a lot of rhythm then this version of “Antony and Cleopatra” may be right up your alley!

Running from December 2 to December 30: Dark on December 24.

Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 7:30 PM.

Alice Merton’s “No Roots”

We’re listening to Alice Merton’s “No Roots” from her debut album “No Roots.”

Alice’s debut track “No Roots” starts out with a simple, deep bass and the hip popping is instantaneous. A bit more into it the drums come and her voice, it’s a voice that makes you pay attention. The song builds with the background vocals emphasizing the word roots like a cheer then the unexpected synth riffs pop in.

“No Roots” is one of those one-listen, I love it songs.

{youtube}PUdyuKaGQd4{/youtube}

We love the song because of the melody and her voice. But the words are like a chant and they resonate with us. We work with young artists/exchange students both international and national (L.A. can seem foreign to many!), and our team has lived overseas. So we understand Alice’s take on traveling the world “like gypsies in the night,” 100%, every word, and the chorus has become our mantra.

“I’ve got no roots, but my home was never on the ground.” Simply put, home is where you are.

Alice gets it because she’s lived it. She’s called Canada, Germany and the U.K. home.

We always tell our homesick L.A. exchange students:

“Love, home is where you are. And right now you’re in Los Awesome.”

We admire that Alice is classically trained and her song is on Spotify repeat. https://open.spotify.com/user/laculturalexchange/playlist/150Qz5lgMb2RM5ZaRNnpvj But what’s even more impressive is she started Paper Planes Music with her manager to produce her album. We love to see talented artists take risks for their craft and create music their way, on their own terms. No one has time to make music they aren’t into. Keep up the hustle, Alice.

We’re uber lucky to have her roll through Los Angeles on Monday, December 11 at the Moroccan Lounge. We’re going and so should you. Tickets>> Follow her on all social media @AliceMerton

Keep making music that moves us.

Santasia – A Holiday Comedy

Santasia – A Holiday Comedy runs December 1 – December 25 at the Whitefire Theatre.

This is a very, very special holiday show…

In its 18th year, this dedicated and highly creative group of actors take us on a tour of their Christmas imaginations, with slightly warped and highly entertaining seasonally fueled stories, songs and dance extravaganzas.

7858dd 34e62a26b5e54de2846f61aa6c845ce7 mv2

The show is a series of sketches, ingeniously interspersed with claymation and live action films created by brothers Shaun and Brandon Loeser with dance numbers choreographed by Tania Pearson-Loeser.  We are entertained beautifully by a festively inclined group of six actors, Shaun and Brandon Loeser, Lon Gowan, Darren Mangler, Tony Nunes and Jim O’Brien with their amusingly depraved and heartfelt seasonal laments and salutations.

It’s quite a ride with more than 25 sketches, songs and films.  But through the manic and hilarious take offs and hauntingly familiar family fiascoes runs a thread of love.  Love for Christmas, love for each other and love for giving us their own very funny version of what Christmas really means to them all.  One moment you are laughing and snorting and the next you are wiping a tear from your eye and remembering those who will be missed around the tree this year.

It’s ingenuous really.  Part Monty Python, part Peanuts, part Home Alone, part It’s a Wonderful Life. But all heart.

7858dd 28c98a2b5d87437bb96817c58e01fcd3 mv2

Santasia is the kind of mad cap production that everyone should go to every year, if only to see what on earth they have come up with this time.  It should become your new tradition in fact.  Bring your kids (over 18, please), bring your family and bring your friends, because everyone on stage seems to be just that important to each other.  Through the dressing up and crazy dancing and singing you can feel the deep connection these men have. It’s what makes everything work so well in fact, that fondness and the ability to support each other’s ‘crazy.’

There are sketches about festive house decorating, dysfunctional dinners, a brilliant “Stranger Things” take off and classic and nimbly performed musical numbers with some serious dance sequences all exquisitely funny, all in wonderfully inappropriate costumes. Just fantastic!

If you go to any Christmas show this year it really has to be Santasia.

Running from December 1 – December 25. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays at 8PM, Sundays at 3PM and 8PM

How to decorate for the holidays 2017

How to decorate for the holidays

Each year we struggle with how to decorate for the holidays.  Do we stay with time-lasting traditions, or try something new and innovative?

Either way, it can be a long and arduous task.  So this year I’ve decided to keep my decorations classic and simple.  I thought about taking my decorating all the way back to when I was younger, but I don’t want the silver tree this year.  I’m opting for the more traditional look with the real tree, beautiful garland and vintage-style ornaments.

Of course, I’ll add my own twist this year.

The Christmas Tree

I’ll be adding lots of red ornaments to my tree. Pairing that with my collection of Hummel ornaments along with beautiful gold garland and a plaid tree skirt.

The Christmas Wreath

I usually have two wreaths on the door. One on the inside and one on the outside.  Both are simple in design.  The outer one is a simple red wreath with pine cones and some garland.  The inner wreath is one with a vintage feel.

The Christmas Mantle

The mantle gets a lot of attention. The love fresh green garland all across the top. I add in more pine cones, red and gold ornaments, a few angels and a few candles.  And I can’t forget the toy soldiers, too.

The Christmas Dining Table

The dining table centerpiece also gets a smaller wreath with a think candle in the middle. This one is usually in a hurricane type of container.

My guest bath downstairs isn’t forgotten. I add simple red, green and gold hand towels in a basket on the counter.  Since I actually have a bit of counter space, I put my smaller Charlie Brown tree in there.

.The Christmas Bannister

And lastly, my bannister always gets the green garland trim with small red bows, finishing the end with a large one.

These are just a few things and ideas I’m happy to pass along.  Take what you like and make your own.

Always have fun when designing in general, for holidays and or a special occasion.

Happy Holidays!

All I Want for Christmas Is My Sanity Clause

“All I Want for Christmas Is My Sanity Clause” is now playing at the Actors Workout Studio through December 16.

This wonderful annual holiday production benefits the Toys for Tots organization and is a sparkling secret gem in NoHo.

It showcases six one-act, original plays, each with a different slant on our traditional beliefs during this time of year. Started 18 years ago to benefit this much-needed cause, all proceeds go to help children receive new gifts every holiday season. Written by playwrights from Virginia, California and Washington D.C., this show is well worth experiencing. Anyone who wants a laugh, shed a small tear, or share some gratitude will definitely have a darn good time with this show.

IMG 4883

The first play is called “Death by Poinsettia” written by Dwayne Yancey and directed by Conrad Dunn.

It centers on the alone and lonely parts that arise too frequently during this season of cheer. A very lonely 20-something (Jessica Temple, decides to kill herself by eating a Poinsettia plant in front of the internet world. She is alone and feels no connection to others. Although the theme is serious, the way it is written and acted by both of the characters brings a sense of recognition and humor to the often insane demands on all of us during this season. Cameron Weir is great as her uninvited guest. He is just as lonely and odd as she believes she is. He is sweetly sincere as he bears his soul to her on how he also feels like an outcast but yearns for a connection. It is funny, poignant and timely.

IMG 4903

Next up is “The Angel Tree” written by Dwayne Yancey as well. He seems to have a plethora of ideas and words swirling around for us this year. If an angel appeared and granted wishes, what would you ask for? What would it take for any of us to believe it is real and not just in our busy heads? The gentle and yet boisterous angel portrayed by Sharon Munfus is more than willing to answer all questions and desires. Even that of a single mother played by Stacy Ann Raposa. Can she reconnect to the teenage daughter (Jessica Fernstom) who is so difficult? According to our angel, it only takes a snap of the fingers and the willingness to believe. Ms. Munfus is perfect in her role. A bit sassy, a bit superior, she is warm and engaging as she shows the mother what is truly important at this time of year.

The funniest and best directed is “Homo for Christmas” written by John Bavoso and directed by the very talented actress Stacy Ann Raposa.

IMG 4913

This is a total laugh fest! Ignorance of the facts doesn’t seem to matter in some circles these days, but it does have an unusual reaction in most family gatherings. Will the parents and grandmother accept the new partner of their beloved child? In this farcical production of miswords and misunderstandings, this family takes the prize. Blatantly ignoring the new girlfriend (Lauren Burwell) of the gay grand-daughter (Ashley Akins), many issues lend themselves to strong chuckles and all out belly laughs. The grandmother is great. Penny Peyrot obviously knows what it takes to garner a laugh and keep moving. The mother, Rosanne Limeres, is no stranger to NoHo theater productions and carries herself with the utmost charm in this ‘ditzy’ mom role. In fact, everyone was really good in this one. I would have loved to see more of this storyline.

Many in the audience liked the “World’s Worst Christmas” that stared two very talented actors, Monica Mauro and Cliff Weissman. Caught on Christmas Eve in a pharmacy awaiting much-needed medications, these characters verbally battle for the unhappiest person of the season. One is ill and one has to get ointment for a sensitive lower region. Both are alone and quickly engage in witty, often sarcastic banter. By the end of their ‘discussion’ they find a surprisingly common ground and come together in an understanding that sharing is the key to the holidays.

The last two plays; “My Name is Santa Claus” and “The Christmas Goat” are also a collection of characters that are out of the ordinary.

The first has a female homeless woman claiming to be Santa Claus, portrayed by Irene Muzzy. The later one is about the animals gathering in the manger awaiting a very important birth. We find that although they are written and directed by separate individuals (LH.Grant and Dwayne Yancey), both share similar messages. Is anyone really fooled when they want to believe something seemingly impossible? Isn’t everyone really looking to belong and be a part of a something that we might have lost or desired? After all, it is people and our connections that make us feel special as part of the season’s joy.

This entire show is so enjoyable, I might go back a second time. After all, it is for a good cause.

Come and fill yourself with gratitude and joy and many, many laughs. The talent and creativity presented on stage can rival any big theater production in town. Thank you to the executive producer, Fran Montano, producer Stacy Ann Raposa, and the entire crew and actors that made this show a delight.

Take yourself and others to the Actors Workout Studio and have a great time.

Reviews: Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri; Justice League; The Man Who Invented Christmas

Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri; Justice League; The Man Who Invented Christmas

One of the best pieces of cinematic news to report is the release of Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri, Martin McDonagh’s grimly amusing, compelling, and ultimately compassionate study of a very determined mother’s quest for justice. Frances McDormand (in her best role since Fargo) dominates the proceedings as a grieving mother who is frustrated with the local law’s lack of progress regarding the investigation of her daughter’s rape and murder. In order to jump-start matters, she rents three little-used billboards outside Ebbing (hence the title) in an attempt to both goad and shame the local police chief (Woody Harrelson) because of the perceived inaction.

Since this is a Martin McDonagh film, nothing ever comes easy, or is as simple as it appears.

While the town’s police might seem to be a sorry, incompetent and even unjust lot (personified by an excellent Sam Rockwell as a mother-ridden officer with plenty of issues), the police chief himself is a respected, responsible officer who has tried to do the right thing—and is himself coping with a terminal illness.  And though McDormand’s single-minded character is generally sympathetic, she walks a fine line throughout as it becomes clear that she feels some kind of culpability in her daughter’s death and in her teenage son’s feelings of abandonment.

Three Bilboards outside Ebbing, Missouri is a terrific movie, beautifully acted, with moments both harrowing and haunting, as well as some scenes depicting surprising tenderness and compassion that left me feeling as moved as anything I’ve seen this year. It is uniformly well-acted, with excellent turns from Rockwell, Harrelson (whose character has a well-etched, quirky sense of humor and justice), John Hawkes (as McDormand’s estranged husband with a much younger girl friend), Peter Dinklage (McDormand’s friend and admirer), Lucas Hedges (from Manchester by the Sea, as McDormand’s depressed son), and a strong, subtle performance from McDormand that should garner her another nomination.

This is well worth seeing, especially if you desire an absorbing, intelligent night at the movies.

JUSTICE LEAGUE

Justice League assembles many of the DC heroes you’ve come to know and perhaps like: namely Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), Batman (Ben Affleck), the Flash (Ezra Miller), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Victor Stome), and Superman (Henry Cavill—why be coy, you knew he was coming back—regardless of the outcome of Batman v Superman). This time they’re united (eventually) against a supervillain who wants to both dominate and destroy the world.  Well…what else is new?

Directed by Zack Snyder from a script by Chris Terrio and Joss Whedon, Justice League is a generally entertaining blend of action and more action, with the occasional side trip into characterization and hero bonding. Gadot still dazzles as Wonder Woman, whether trading quips or trying to assert herself as as the leader and moral center; Affleck seems to have roused himself a little, and Momoa’s Aquaman and Miller’s the Flash have their amusing moments. And while the action sequences are well-done (and not as excessive as has been previously the case), the central villain is a bit of a bore—perhaps one of the lamest super-villains to ever (dis) grace a superhero film. In addition, what partly makes this franchise different from (and inferior to) to the Marvel franchise is the lingering feeling that—in the DC Universe, all you really need to save the day is Superman. Yes, the team is assembled, but in the end, Superman can get the job done by himself, thank you very much, wherein with the Marvel heroes, it’s very much a team effort.

A word of caution: if you are tempted to see the film at a theater newly equipped with both 3D and 4D-X—DON’T!!

The 4D-X showings resemble going to Universal and watching one of those virtual, interactive chases in the endlessly shifting seats which go forward, back, side to side depending on the sequence—so that the viewer is virtually pummeled by the end of the film. This viewer opted (soon after the movie began) for a stationary seat so he could properly enjoy the film—at last.

THE MAN WHO INVENTED CHRISTMAS

If you want to see a film that could conceivably fill you with the holiday spirit, you might want to see The Man Who Invented Christmas, a somewhat fanciful look at the circumstances that led Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens) to writing A Christmas Carol, complete with the presence of Dickens’ charmingly irresponsible father (Jonathan Pryce) and a scowling gent who becomes the personification of Scrooge (Christopher Plummer), and who constantly “visits” the beleaguered Dickens while the author tries to advance the narrative—and get himself out of his financial quagmire.  The film is tasteful, charming, amusing, heartwarming, and populated with winning performers, namely Stevens and a sterling Plummer.

Together, they combine to put a new spin on the venerable Christmas classic.

Walton Ford – Calafia

Walton Ford – Calafia at the Gagosian in Beverly Hills through December 16, 2017

Ever since I saw his ‘Bestiarium’ at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, 2010, I’ve waited for Walton Ford to come to LA with a solo exhibition.

Walton Ford is here, and he’s serving up a timeless and local beauty that’s perfect for a nostalgic but well-read visitor.

Walton Ford stylistically imitates John James Audubon’s naturalist illustrations.

Ford creates an authentic ersatz of familiar and fantastical (as we see in Calafia) fauna. Ford’s exhibition Calafia shows at the Gagosian in Beverly Hills, through December 16, 2017. While you may be deterred that the Gagosian is in Beverly Hills, rest assured that Ford’s exhibition isn’t pretentious, although parking is a problem.

I imagine Ford to be the impressionist Flâneur of National Geographic subjects.

While several movements in art (such as the Ashcan School) capture daily life of cities and street corners, Ford’s subjects are more animalistic in nature. Quite literally, Ford paints animals. However, these watercolor creatures aren’t observable in nature, but in literature, where Ford often pulls his subjects from. In Calafia, Ford has married literature and art, and he’s painted mythical animals from Western epics and folklore about California, particularly from the colonization period. One such epic is a novel by 16th-century Castilian author Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, Las Sergas de Esplandían (The Adventures of Esplandian). In Las Sergas de Esplandían, Amazons live on a fictitious island that’s inhabited by griffins. The Queen of the Amazons was called Calafia. The Spanish sailed up the Western coast of today’s United States, and named our state after this fictitious island. This exhibition’s title, Calafia, echoes this transcendence of Spanish reverie and reality. With a subtle sense of humor, Ford has taken the two tangible mediums of literature and art, and moved them from an elitist and obscure realm to a space of historical intrigue.

Exhibition:     Calafia

Artist:             Walton Ford

When:             November 2 – December 16, 2017

Where:           Gagosian

Address:         456 North Camden Drive.

Why Island Hopping is the New Travel Adventure.

Why Island Hopping is the New Travel Adventure.

In World War II the term Island Hopping referred to the military strategy used by General MacArthur to gain a foothold into Japanese occupied territories in the Pacific. The US military would attack an island held by Japan and overwhelm the thin forces located there. They would then fortify their position and make them into a base of operations. They would then move to the next island and repeat the process. By using this method the Allied forces were able to put a huge dent in Japanese occupation of the Pacific. The US came close to the island of Japan itself using this method.

But in recent years, the term Island Hopping has taken on a whole new meaning and it is much more fun and adventurous. Merriam Webster currently defines Island Hopping as “to travel from island to island in a chain” This is a great way to experience multiple cultures and scenic views during a vacation. The method of island hopping offers you the chance to see different islands that have unique histories and activities during a week or two of vacation. There are family friendly adventure’s like those offered in Hawaii where you can fly between the islands and see soaring waterfalls, exotic wildlife, and surf amazing beaches. You can hike up high volcanoes and see lava flow to the sea, creating new real estate.

Greek Island Hopping

Another great adventure is taking an island hopping adventure in the Greek islands. While you might be able to fly, the best way to enjoy this adventure is by ferry. One of the best Island Hopping service is Hostelbay-Click here. They offer different packages to suit your needs and will work with you to create the Greek Island adventure you will never forget. What makes them special is there unique access to many of the Greek Islands.

Mykonos Island

Mykonos Island is known for its amazing party beaches and summer night activities. It is part of the Cyclades group in the Aegean Sea. It is the first stop on your island hopping adventure. Night activities include massive dance clubs with thumping bass and world class DJ’s. For the young adults, it’s a perfect start to this adventure. But for those who are into daylight activities too, Mykonos is home to the iconic 16th century windmills that still operate.

Naxos Island

Naxos Island is also on your adventure list. It is the largest of the Cyclades group Aegean Sea Islands and boasts beautiful cube-shaped houses that are whitewashed and glimmer in the midday sun. There are Venetian medieval mansions and Kastro, is a 13th century hilltop castle that has a famous archeological museum within its walls. You and your family can spend time exploring the long stretches of beaches and ancient ruins or you can choose to spend the evening eating Grecian cuisine at the many local restaurants and open bistros.

Ios Island

This island is known for its hilly cliffs that drop off into the Aegean Sea. It’s main city, Charos is filled with winding stairs and narrow paths that wind between the whitewashed Venetian buildings. This makes it nearly inaccessible by car, so be sure to bring your hiking shoes. Ios is also known to house the Tomb of Homer and is visited by hundreds of tourists yearly. It is also theorized that Homer’s mother was born on this island. Spindly windmills dot the steep hills throughout the island.

Santorini Island

Santorini Island is best known for the devastating volcanic eruption that totally changed the islands landscape in the 16th century. If you’re interested in geologic activity and would love to learn about recent eruptions, this island is a perfect place to explore and learn more about.  Because of it’s re-formed landscapes two main towns face each other across an underwater caldera. Each city clings to the cliffs left by the eruption and as you ferry through the craters waters, you see the white cubed homes stacked up the sides like lego frames.

There are more islands on the island hopping tour offered by Hostel-Bay and you can go to their website to learn more about their packages.

Island Hopping is the new vacation adventure for those who would love to experience different scenarios and explore historic places and not having to stay in one place. Each island offers its won unique perspective and lifestyle. From Hawaii to Greece, island hopping is a great alternative to the family vacation.

The rich list of California

The rich list of California

Between the entrepreneurs of Silicon Valley and the celebrity stars of Tinsel Town, California has never had any shortage of the super-rich. However, some of the names appearing at the very top of California’s rich list might come as a surprise. Here, we will take a look at a few of the famous, and not so famous, and find out how they came upon their fabulous wealth.

Could you join the actors and the digital tycoons?

California is home to more billionaires than any other state, with well over 100. So does that mean that becoming a millionaire is something that any of us can do? Indeed, there are a good number of very wealthy multi-millionaires who have obtained their money through less than conventional means.

After all, California is also the home of some of the most lucrative lotteries in the entire USA. California lottery winning numbers could yield a nine-figure payout, so it is definitely worth checking those previous winning numbers. After all, the Powerball alone, with its potential payout of $411 million could make you wealthier than Judge Judy (worth an estimated $300 million) or Beyoncé Knowles ($350 million).

For most of us, that sounds like good enough company to keep to live out life in comfort and luxury. But how about those California residents whose wealth is 10 or even 100 times more? Let’s meet some of them.

Mark Zuckerberg

The Facebook founder is the richest man in California by some margin. His 1903 home on Hamilton in Palo Alto looks relatively modest for a man worth more than $50 billion. He bought it in 2011 for $7 million, and in subsequent years has also purchased the four neighboring houses at a total cost of more than $40 million. He recently submitted a planning application to demolish and rebuild all four of those, ostensibly to “maintain the character of the neighborhood with smaller, updated versions.” However, many speculate that the real reason is to protect and enhance his privacy and security.

Elon Musk

Serial entrepreneur Elon Musk is worth an estimated $20 billion and owns several multi-million dollar properties in Bel Air, which are rumored to have cost him more than $70 million.

The 46-year-old is best known as the man behind Tesla Inc, the electric car maker and solar panel manufacturer based just down the road from Mark Zuckerberg in Palo Alto.

However, it is through software company Zip2, which he founded in 1995 and sold four years later for $300 million, that he started to make his money. He used it to invest in the company that owned PayPal, and the rest is history.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin

The joint founders of Google are both California residents and are each worth around $44 billion. The former is yet another face you might bump into on the streets of Palo Alto, while the latter owns a remarkable property just down the road in Los Altos.

Patrick Soon-Shiong

While it is fair to say the majority of the names among California’s super-rich list earned their money in the tech industry, there are a few good old-fashioned industrialists around, too. Patrick Soon-Shiong made his billions from the pharmaceutical industry, and with a net worth of more than $8 billion, he is sometimes referred to as “America’s richest doctor.”

He and his wife, former actress Michelle Chan, live in Los Angeles and are rumored to have invested heavily, but quietly, in high-end real estate across California.

George Lucas

Doesn’t anyone make money out of Hollywood anymore? Of course, they do, and one or two of the biggest names have bank balances that can almost go up against the tech giants. Names certainly don’t get any bigger than George Lucas – the Star Wars creator is a longtime resident of San Anselmo, and his ranch at 52 Park Way has been listed as his primary home since the mid-1970s.

Lucas went into semi-retirement at the age of 68, something that most of us would probably have done several years sooner with $5 billion in the bank. Five years on, however, he is still involved in directing independent, small-scale productions.

Is it something in the air?

There is no doubt that California has always been a magnet for money. That is still the case today, despite the economic shifts in the world over recent years. It must be something to do with that Pacific breeze!

Very Independent Filmmakers Have to Make Opportunities for Themselves

Very Independent Filmmakers Have to Make Opportunities for Themselves.

The end of the year is nigh and it’s usually around this time that we all start reflecting on what we have and have not accomplished this past year.

Creatives, if you are anything like me,  you are always kicking yourselves about not “doing.”

We plan, we talk, we think and think and sometimes this takes up so much time that before we know it the year has flown by and we have nothing to show for it. But maybe we do!

Everything you do feeds into everything you will create.

The most important thing you will ever do is create your own work, your own opportunities and these can take time to gestate, so don’t be too hard on yourselves  (I’m talking to myself here) and understand that brilliant and worthwhile work doesn’t happen overnight.

But, if you can imagine something, you can write it, cast it and turn it into a film.  Many, many projects begin humbly.  If you have an idea for a film and neither the time nor the money to make it, try making a short version of it first.

Some amazing projects, series, and films have started life as short films.  A recent hit ‘SMILF’ on Showtime actually began as a short film written and directed by Frankie Shaw (Mr Robot).  It won the 2015 Short Film Jury Award at Sundance, which got Showtime’s attention, leading to the show. And it all came from Shaw taking matters into her own hands and making her own opportunities.

“I think make opportunity for yourself, if that’s something you’re inclined to do, for sure,” Shaw said to Variety. “I discovered that my biggest passion was for directing, so in making opportunity for myself, I found what I like doing the best.”

This is just one example of how to create your own path into the industry, or even sidestep it all together.   Using small to no budget and making a simple, single-story piece gives you an opportunity to develop a world that you imagine, and is the absolute perfect way to begin a bigger project.  A short film, in essence, is a distillation of a bigger idea.  It can enthuse you, encourage you and impress others enough to help you take the next step.

Some other examples of big projects that started small are:

“Whiplash” – This proof of concept short film version also won the Short Film Jury Award at Sundance and help Damien Chazelle get the money to make the feature and then came LA LA Land of course.

“Saw”’ was a short film and its creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell used the short to pitch the groundbreaking feature with its now iconic intense and terrifying themes.  Whatever you may think of the franchise, these guys did exactly what they wanted to do and made an art out of it.

“Alive in Joberg” was the science fiction short directed by Neill Blomkamp to showcase his idea for District 9.  It was so well received that Peter Jackson took over as Producer and collaborated with the Blomkamp for the feature version which stared Blomkamp himself.

“Mama” began life as a Spanish language short by Andres Muschietti and was so loved by Guillermo Del Toro that he produced the feature version of this supernatural horror about two young girls, adopted by a couple and haunted by a creature.  Sometimes the right ‘fan’ is all you need.

“The Dirk Diggler Story” was a mockumentary made by a 17-year-old Paul Thomas Anderson in 1987.  It took Anderson another 10 years, but as his second feature “Boogie Nights” launched his career and was nominated for three Academy Awards.

“Within The Woods” was the super 8mm 30 minute short film version of Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead.”  This still terrifying film created an entirely new horror genre.

“Peluca” was shot for $500 on 16mm over a weekend and after being shown at Slamdance morphed into “Napoleon Dynamite.”

I could go on and on and on…

If you have a vision, even with no money…or perhaps because of it…you can create something unique, something totally you.  And it’s your voice that everyone wants to hear.

Your vision, your world that will spark something in someone and that’s what will get you to the next level.

If it’s brilliant, original and authentic, whether it’s horror, drama, comedy or whatever, people will love it and, in the right hands, it could lead to a world of opportunity.

So get out there…and get on with it…

A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum – Garry Marshall Theatre

The Garry Marshall Theatre Presents: “A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum” running through December 31

How can you go wrong with Sondheim? Well, I have seen a few dodgy interpretations, but this rather brilliant version of “A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum” certainly isn’t one of them!

With a brilliant cast, superb production and an invisible but ridiculously good live band, the folks at The Garry Marshall Theatre have done themselves proud.

Forum6

If you are unfamiliar with the story…(have you been living on Mars?) this long-running Broadway favorite, with music and lyrics by Steven Sondheim and book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, is a frolic amongst the pillars of ancient Rome.  A slave yearns for his freedom and makes a bargain with his young master that if he can get the girl of his dreams to marry him, he will earn his freedom…and chaos and hilarity ensue…of course…

The show is full of wonderful songs and hilarious situational comedy that may be a little long in the tooth, but can still sink them well into your funny bone that’s for sure.  I really didn’t stop laughing from the opening lines to the curtain call.  Bravo to the Director Joseph Leo Bwarie.

Everyone is absolutely brilliant, just perfect casting.  And the voices! Soaring and stunning and Broadway fabulous.  They all handle the classic “things don’t go at all according to plan” with aplomb. The blackmail, funny disguises, long-lost children, strutting generals, scheming spouses and the frantic and increasingly dramatic impending disasters are all masterfully maneuvered and beautifully played out.

The Garry Marshall Theatre is a gem and this holiday season they bring a classic back – and it’s very gratefully received.

I highly recommend “A Funny Thing Happened on The Way to The Forum”

Making it as a young actor in Hollywood

Making it as a young actor in Hollywood

On the face of it young actors have it all; from the roles that they play to the circles that they move in it’s not difficult, or uncommon to be jealous of Hollywood’s rising stars. No one can blame you for being attracted to a career in Hollywood. After all, its lifestyle is a wholly vibrant, diverse, and exciting one, and no two days or projects are ever the same. As a young actor, it’s only natural to be attracted to such chaos. We’d like to show you the way.

Perfecting a craft

You know, there’s plenty of advice out there for budding young actors; the trick is distinguishing the helpful from the obstructive and learning where you fit in the system. There are numerous hurdles that you’re likely to need to navigate to get anywhere in Hollywood, including vast amounts competition, stereotyping, self-consciousness, and rejection. Like most hurdles, though, these barriers are only as daunting as you make them.

Be prepared to start from the bottom

If you’re to make it as a young actor in Hollywood, you must be prepared to accept unpaid work, small parts, and non-speaking roles. Well, how else do you expect to get that foot in the door, if it’s not by starting as an extra? Every appearance, every line, and each second of screen time will contribute to your show reel, and open another window of opportunity.

Tread the boards

Okay, so you’d like to work in movies? If you’re serious about your acting career, then it really will pay to tread the boards, as well as fighting for parts on the small and silver screen. Acting in the theater will prove you know your craft, and help you to establish a reputation as a versatile, well-rounded professional. Besides, all of the huge names have done it.

Never stop learning

There’s no such thing as perfection in Hollywood, although you’d be fooled into thinking that some actors simply nailed it the first time. Believe us when we say that you never stop learning. Indeed, it’s essential to hone your craft and skills and to make time for classes, workshops, and improv sessions. One day you’ll stumble upon your niche, and find a way to make your skills work for you. Until that day, be open to any and all avenues of acting.

Never give up

Above all, don’t be disheartened, and attend each audition with the same enthusiasm and positivity. Hollywood will be able to tell when you’re getting ready to give up. Maintain your portfolio and show-reel, and be persistent when it comes to casting calls. Take a moment each day to further your career, be that making phone calls, sending emails, or networking with industry leaders. Your initiative will work wonders when it comes to bagging roles.

Oh, and above all remember to seize every opportunity; the likes of Johnny Depp, Meryl Streep, and Jack Nicholson didn’t get where they are today by being picky during the earliest days of their careers.

The pitfalls of Hollywood

Despite its glitz, glamor, seemingly endless parties, and constant media attention the life of a young actor isn’t without its pitfalls. In fact, those very same celebrity events, magazine shoots, and paparazzi opportunities often add up to a lot of pressure, both to look good and act a certain way for almost every moment that you’re awake; the limelight can be a lonely place if you allow it to be. It would be very easy to fall in with the wrong crowd or to rely on alcohol, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll to simply make each day bearable. Many young actors have fallen foul of the pitfalls associated with the spotlight. You see, while each acting job will come as a reward for all of your hard work and determination, the stress that piles on with every magazine spread, gossip column, or Instagram post – not to mention the workload – might make you question why you’ve chosen such a career in the first place.

Please, don’t feel disheartened it is possible to enjoy life in Hollywood if you’ll only take a few moments each day to look after yourself, and your wellbeing. That paparazzo will wait, after all. Keeping your head above water could be as simple as taking a weekly yoga class, indulging in a little meditation, or finding time to relax and enjoy the simple things in life. You might even pick up a new hobby, such as cookery, or seek advice from a professional regarding the management of stress, anxiety, or substance reliance; wherever you turn, ensure you’re taking time out for you, every now and again.

Social media is an excellent source of information should you need it; indeed, the Newport Academy’s Twitter feed is the perfect place to start if you’re feeling lost, alone, or somewhat chaotic. Well-versed in tackling the kinds of crises that young people face, the Academy might become an important point of contact if you’re trying to break Hollywood, one late night and early morning after another. Remember that you’re never alone in Hollywood – and that’s often a good thing.

For every scandal, forgotten evening out, or anxiety-ridden morning there are some magical opportunities to be found in Hollywood; make the most of your career ascent, and remember to remain open-minded. It’s also a good idea to be kind to those you meet on the way up, as they’ll be your support network and biggest fans when you finally make it.

Finally, look after yourself because the life of a young actor is an exhausting one, and you’ll need that energy for your next audition. Get to grips with the organizations and individuals that you can rely upon for help when you need it, and make sure you’re forthcoming in asking for that assistance. Hollywood is so much more than a place; it’s a way of life for those who exist and work there. Remember that, and there’s no reason why you can’t succeed.

The Group Rep presents A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

The Group Rep presents “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM”  written by William Shakespeare, directed by Marc Singer playing at the Lonny Chapman Theatre through December 31.

Skakespeare’s famous and memorable play, “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM” i about love and marriage, with a dose of dream and reality thrown in, and is perfect for this holiday season.

Duke Theseus (Doug Haverty) is planning his wedding to Hippolyta (Silke Sorenson), and at the same time trying to force his daughter Hermia (Hartley Powers) to marry Demetrius (Doren Sorell).  But Hermia is in love with Lysander (Mikel Parraga-Wills) and is planning to run away with him.  Helena (Anna Gion), who is Hermia’s friend, loves Demetrius.  So you can see how all this could cause havoc in the Fairy Forest.

Puck (Bennett Saltzman) is mistakenly instructed by Oberon – King of the Fairies (Marc Singer) – to sprinkle “love dust” on Demetrius and Lysander causing all kinds of chaos among lovers, plus he sprinkles “love dust” on Titiana – Queen of the Fairies (Suzy London) – so Oberon can capture a little fairy boy.  Whew!!!  In the meantime, and somewhere else in the forest, Peter Quince, a carpenter (Lloyd Pedersen) is directing a group of actors to perform a play for the wedding of the Duke and Hippolyta.  They are a rag-tag bunch, with Bottom (J. Christopher Sloan) wanting the starring role.  As you can imagine, the play and the group become frenzied as well.

With 25 actors in this play, it takes the adept direction of Marc Singer, assistant director Justin Waggle, and 2nd Assistant Director Robert Axelrod.  The Group Rep has great sets by Marc Singer, Chris Winfield and Dean Cameron, and great costumes by Angela M. Eads.  Lights, sound and stage production are delightful.

Okay, I know this sounds confusing, but it all becomes clear as love wins the day.  Thank goodness!  The holidays just wouldn’t be complete without a bit of misunderstanding.  Love, “love dust,” marriage and fairies.   “A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM” fulfills our Christmas wishes.  Light, bright and fun for your holiday cheer.

Happy holidays everyone and enjoy!!!!!!!
