Recently, I lost my dog Duke to liver failure.
When I had the veterinarian end his life, I have never felt such pain and grief. Some people tried to make me feel better and suggested I get another dog right away, which would reduce my pain. I then asked if I lost my husband would they give me the same advice. My friend had good intentions and wanted to make me feel better but only time can reduce the terrible sense of loss.
It has been three months since my Duke died and I have stopped screaming to God to bring my boy back, or asking for a sign that he is okay and that I will see him again….I did get my sign.
For those of you who have recently lost your dog or lost your dogs years ago, there is a special day to fondly remember your dog or any pet that you’ve lost. It is the National Pet Memorial Day which every year is held the second Sunday in September. It is a day to remember and cherish the wonderful memories of your pet. This day was established by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Cremoratories (IAPC). I couldn’t find anywhere that it is anational holiday but who cares….the purpose of this day is what matters.
Some of you may not have lost a dog but lost your cat or rabbit or hamster…they too are to be remembered. I had a pet rat named Rocky who I still fondly remember.
Here are some suggestions from Holidayinsights.com on how to remember your beloved pet on National Pet Memorial Day:
-
Spend a few minutes reflecting upon pleasant memories of your pet
-
If you buried your pet somewhere, go for a visit
-
Contribute to an animal protection group
-
Volunteer at an animal protection group
-
Create a small memorial in a flower garden in your yard
-
Plant a tree or a shrub as a living memorial
I am going to have a dinner with my family and each one of us will share a special memory of Duke.
