ANATOMY OF A HUG by Kat Ramsburg

THE ROAD THEATRE COMPANY and Taylor Gilbert, Founder/Artistic Director, together with Sam Anderson, Artistic Director, announce a new developmental workshop wing that uses off-night theater space to explore and develop new plays. Three new plays will be workshopped at the Road this fall: 3 FOR THE ROAD, written by Tony DiMurro and co-directed by David Gianopoulos and Meeghan Holaway; SUNDAY MORNING, written by Abigail Carney and directed by Nicky Davis; and ANATOMY OF A HUG, written by Kat Ramsburg and directed by Ann Hearn. Performances begin Monday, September 26 at 8PM at The Road on Lankershim, 5108 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601. Tickets are available only at the door for a suggested minimum donation of $15.

“The Road Theatre Company’s Off-Road Series is an integral step in the production process. It gives writers, actors, and directors space and time to develop works-in-progress as bare-bones workshop productions, with audience for feedback to then continue developing their pieces toward full production. It has also served as a space for members experimenting with reimagined classics, evenings of short plays and other forms,” says artistic director Taylor Gilbert.

The Off-Road Series is the Road Theatre Company’s developmental workshop wing. It aims to use the off-night theater space to explore and develop new plays — particularly socially challenging and avant-garde plays that need time and space to develop and evolve into full production-ready pieces. Tony DiMurro’s 3 FOR THE ROAD is a series of three separate but connected stories of isolation and abandonment. Each of these unique stories takes us on a journey with different people at different points in their lives, ultimately turning three poignant tales of desperation into a single narrative of redemption and hope. Directed by David Gianopoulos and Meeghan Holaway. Produced by David Gianopoulos and Michael Dempsey. Featuring Michael Dempsey, Kevin Dobson, David Gianopoulos, Meeghan Holaway and Coronado Romero. OPENS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, Performances Mondays and Wednesdays at 8PM, through October 12.

Abigail Carney’s SUNDAY MORNING takes place in a luxe high-rise in a drunken encounter between Jenny, a white woman, and the building’s black doorman, Will, that leads to a morning of regret, confusion, and guilt. As Jenny’s best friend struggles to uncover what has happened, her relationship with Jenny is upended by the personal politics of race and sexual consent. Directed by Nicky Davis. Produced by Natalie Llerena and Mia Fraboni. Featuring Ronin Lee, Natalie Llerena, DeJean Brown and Winter Dunn. OPENS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, Performances Thursdays at 8PM and Saturdays at 1PM, through October 15.

In Kat Ramsburg’s ANATOMY OF A HUG, when Amelia’s mother receives Compassionate Release from her prison sentence, Amelia’s carefully constructed world is threatened. Twenty-¬six years of living vicariously through her beloved TV characters doesn’t prepare her for the actual drama of her mother’s return or the advances of a charming co-¬worker. The ticking clock of her mother’s illness means Amelia must decide if her fictional life is safer than the possibility her own story. Directed by Ann Hearn. Produced by Michelle Gillette and Ann Hearn. Featuring Michelle Gillette, Cheryl Francis Harrington, Stephen Tyler Howell and Hilary J. Schwartz. OPENS SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1, Performances Saturdays at 4PM and Sundays at 7PM, through October 16.

The Design Team for THE OFF ROAD WORKSHOP SERIES is as follows: Lighting Design by Derrick McDaniel; Sound Design by David Marling; The Stage Manager is Tony Carnaghi. THE OFF-ROAD WORKSHOP SERIES is spearheaded by Steve Apostolina and Donna Simone Johnson.
