Los Angeles International Flamenco Festival Presents Sonikete Blues – Flamenco-Jazz hybrid fusing Gypsy Flamenco with the Delta Blues
Flamenco Festival will debut its fall 2016 season with a one-night-only performance at El Portal Theatre in the NoHo Arts District of Los Angeles, CA, Sunday, September 11, 2016 at 7 p.m. The performance, entitled Sonikete Blues, innovatively fuses Gypsy flamenco with the delta blues style found in Mississippi. The concert showcases the talents of world-renowned flamenco, jazz and blues singers, dancers and musicians from both Spain and the USA.
Sonikete Blues features incredible artists such as notable flamenco-jazz pianist from Spain, Chano Domínguez, as well as Gypsy singer Juan Bacán from the legendary town of Lebrija, the virtuoso footwork of dancer Cihtli Ocampo, and American artists Deron Johnson (pianist for Miles Davis) and Maiya Sykes (singer on The Voice) performing with the Spanish artists, breaking down nationalistic boundaries and stereotypes. Luis de la Tota, a Gypsy percussionist from Jerez, Spain, will provide flamenco percussion in the form of hand-clapping and knuckle-drumming.
Cihtli Ocampo “La Gallardi,” the show’s featured flamenco dancer has been described by Carmen Amaya’s biographer Mario Bois as “Truly exceptional and astounding. Ocampo captivates audiences worldwide with dazzling footwork and unique styling”. The show additionally highlights two pianists contrasting in styles: the virtuosity of critically-acclaimed Blue Note Record Label’s flamenco pianist, Chano Domínguez side by side with jazz pianist Deron Johnson.
According to Ethan Margolis, the show’s musical director, composer, guitarist and bilingual singer (Spanish/English), “the performance demonstrates that anything is possible when people work and learn together. The Gypsy school of Flamenco contains some of the most tasteful and elevated rhythmic concepts I have ever encountered. On the other hand, my love and respect for African-American spirituals and the Delta Blues extends beyond words. Jazz, as the ultimate expression of freedom within music, provides the tools to connect everything.”
