The Group Rep Gives Back Despite the Pandemic

***

Every year for the past 40 years, the Group Repertory Theater Company has put on a holiday party for foster children housed in group homes.  The young people, escorted by their counselors, come to theatre for lunch, games, entertainment and a gift for each of them delivered by Santa.  It’s a full day at the holiday decorated Lonny Chapman Theatre in NoHo, with spirited members and friends of the theatre company serving as elf hosts throughout the day.

We chatted with GRT company founding member actress/producer Janet Wood, who chairs the committee that puts on the annual Kids Holiday Party.  Ms. Wood has been part of the event from its beginnings. We wanted to know about how the tradition of the party came about.  In addition, we were wondering how they went about putting on a holiday party for the kids this year.

How did the Group Rep Theatre Company get involved in having holiday parties for kids in need?

We started out about 40 years ago.  It was the brainchild of Lynn Rosen (Bright), a former member, and in those days 5 or 10 of us went to the foster facilities and brought gifts and entertained.  We did games with the kids and they just loved it and clamored for more.

How long have you been a member of the Group Rep?  What made you want to take on the role of chairing the annual event?

I am one of the Founding Members of the theater, one of 11 or 12 actors who came together to do theater and invite audiences to a little 34 seat theater over on Van Ness Blvd.  When Lonny Chapman came in and became our Artistic Director, everything exploded.  We did the play “La Ronde” and were an instant hit in town. I gradually took on the role of chairing the event every year.  When Lynn left, Irene Chapman and I took over and produced the holiday show event for about 20 years.  Then when Irene left, I took over the whole thing.  But it does take a village.  So many members and friends of the theatre company are involved in making it happen.

What usually happens at the annual Kids Holiday Party?  What do the kids experience and enjoy?

The theater is decorated from top to bottom. The Group Rep members dressed in holiday attire serve as hosts for the day.  The kids play games, see a magic show and entertainers perform. Lunch for 100 people is served, followed by holiday songs, and a play written especially for them.  At the end, Santa comes out and gives each child a gift from Santa.

How did the party plans change due to the pandemic? What, if anything, was put together to make a celebration for the kids this holiday season?

I was very conscious of the fact that we could not have the party and was worried that the kids would feel we forgot them.  And so, I decided to create a virtual party and send it to them! The one-hour virtual show “CELEBRATION!” included a Group Rep member Zoom audience wall, a magician, singers, jokesters, and a violinist. We ended the show with the finale of the previously recorded “A CAROL CHRISTMAS” (GRT’s Ovation nominated original musical written by Bruce Kimmel and Doug Haverty).  All the hours of recording were brought together by the amazing editing of Doug Engalla, with graphics by our Artistic Director Doug Haverty.  It was indeed a labor of love.

Dr. Jay Silverman & Janet Wood Kids Holiday Party 2020

Is there anything you wish I had asked about or would want a reader to know about the annual Kids Holiday Party?

When we started out, GRT members would donate a gift to give to the kids.  As the years went by and the need grew, I decided to raise money for decorations, rentals, lunch, prizes, etc., including a gift for each child.  That has continued to this day.  Many people donate, including the Rotary Club. Plans are already underway for the 2021 annual Kids Holiday Party.  If a reader is so inclined, donations would be most appreciated.

Discover the Best Things to Do in Hollywood California

https://unsplash.com/photos/hollywood-los-angeles-hzc5cxRicFI

When someone says Hollywood, your mind might go to red carpets and glamorous celebrities. However, spending some time here reveals much more than the postcards suggest. There are plenty of things to do in Hollywood, California, that offer a mix of entertainment, culture, outdoor experiences, and easy access to the rest of LA. What’s not to love?

If you’re planning to take an extended break, Hollywood may seem a bit overwhelming at first. After all, the neighborhood moves quickly, and distances between attractions can sometimes stretch further than expected. In this guide, you can explore how to plan while staying open to flexibility and how California car shipping can help smooth your journey.

Landing in Hollywood for Weeks with Work and Downtime Plans

Staying in Hollywood for several weeks? You’ll want to balance your productivity with doing a bit of exploring to make the experience truly rewarding. Hollywood offers a convenient base for those wanting to travel and remotely work, with plenty of coffee shops, co-working spaces, and access to some seriously major areas across LA.

You’ll want to create a loose weekly rhythm rather than jam-packing every day with activities and events. Think about breaking your schedule down – mornings for work, afternoons for sightseeing, and evenings for entertainment or rest. But since traffic in LA can be a bit unpredictable, considering activities that are close to each other can also help reduce wasted time.

When researching things to do in Hollywood, always keep flexibility in mind. Hollywood works best when travelers leave room for that all-important spontaneity instead of pushing themselves through a packed itinerary.

Exploring Iconic Attractions and Hidden Things to Do in Hollywood

Let’s face it – Hollywood has no shortage of famous landmarks!

The obvious starting point is the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where thousands of stars are scattered across Hollywood Boulevard. Close to this, visitors often stop at the TCL Chinese Theatre to compare celebrity handprints or take photographs outside the Dolby Theatre, home of the Academy Awards.

However, many of the best things to do in Hollywood, California, extend beyond the usual sightseeing.

Outdoor enthusiasts often enjoy hiking routes around Griffith Park, especially trails with views where you can spot the famed Hollywood Sign. Griffith Observatory also offers panoramic views across Los Angeles while giving visitors access to astronomy exhibits and public telescopes.

Film lovers may enjoy studio tours in the surrounding areas, while music fans often explore historic venues on the Sunset Strip. There’s also a bunch of local flea markets, vintage shops, and independent restaurants, which show off a different side of Hollywood. They can help give you a slower experience, helping you avoid the burnout which often comes with busy sightseeing.

Managing Transportation, Parking, and Day Trips Around Los Angeles

So, the big question: how are you going to get around? Although some of the attractions are walkable, Los Angeles is typically quite car-dependent. Public transport has improved over the years – particularly around Hollywood – but reaching areas like beaches and hiking spots is always much easier with a car. So, if you’re going for more than a few days, this is something you’ll have to consider.

Top trips for visitors with their own vehicle near Hollywood include:

  • Santa Monica
  • Malibu
  • Pasadena
  • Venice Beach

Further afield, you’ll find:

  • Joshua Tree
  • San Diego

While you have a lot more flexibility with a car, driving to Hollywood from a long distance comes with its own set of challenges. Parking fees can add up quickly, so do your research on where you can park and the policies around accommodation parking. Flying into Los Angeles while arranging car shipping separately can sometimes feel more practical than completing a long drive across multiple states.

For travellers moving from the East Coast or Midwest, cross-country car shipping may reduce travel fatigue while allowing access to a personal vehicle after arrival. Rather than spending several days on the road driving, travellers can arrive rested and focus on exploring Hollywood immediately.

The key here is weighing convenience against your budget and deciding how important personal transportation will be during your stay. For traveling information, you might find the resources on the California Department of Transportation helpful.

Fitting Car Shipping into Discover the Best Things to Do in Hollywood, California

For travellers planning an extended stay, vehicle logistics can become part of the broader travel strategy.

Someone spending weeks or months getting to know LA may prefer having access to their own vehicle instead of relying entirely on rentals or rideshares. In these situations, car shipping can help simplify relocation while reducing the stress and hassle of long-distance driving.

  • Enclosed vs open

Travelers moving high-value or collector vehicles sometimes explore enclosed auto transport options, which offer vehicles higher levels of protection.

  • Choosing your car shipping company

Research matters. You’ll want to compare timelines, delivery windows, insurance coverage, and transport carriers, which can help avoid unnecessary complications. Looking into good car shipping companies also helps clarify what you can expect regarding pickup and delivery processes, shipping insurance, and delivery timeframes. Ensure you choose one with valid licensing via the FMCSA.

Rather than treating transportation as a last-minute problem, fitting it into your travel planning early often creates a smoother experience overall.

Making the Most of a Longer Hollywood Stay Before Heading Home

There you have it! As you’ll know by now, the best Hollywood trips usually combine structure with flexibility, and among the most rewarding things to do in Hollywood is allowing yourself time to experience the area beyond the usual tourist bucket list. Longer stays can help you discover simple, memorable moments here as well as the iconic famous attractions.

With thoughtful planning and realistic expectations, discovering the best things to do in Hollywood, California, can become less stressful and much more memorable. Backed by a wide network of professional drivers and strong customer reviews, choosing the right transport company helps ensure a seamless move. Discover reliable car shipping options today to take the hassle out of enjoying Hollywood.

Backyard Entertainment Ideas for Homes with Pools

A home with a pool can support many kinds of backyard entertaining. Some families use the space for weekend cookouts. Others prefer quiet evening drinks, kids’ swim days, casual dinners, music nights, or relaxed get-togethers with creative friends. The best design starts with the way the space is actually used.

Some property injuries are described as accidents because they happened suddenly. A person slips, trips, falls, or gets hurt, and the property owner may claim there was no way to prevent it.

Menopause and the Modern Woman: Why More People Are Managing It Online

For a lot of women, menopause arrives quietly at first. A few disrupted nights of sleep, some unexpected mood shifts, warmth that seems to come from nowhere at the wrong moments. It can take months before the pattern becomes clear, and even longer before anyone brings it up with a doctor. In a culture that has historically been uncomfortable with the topic, many women have simply managed it alone, or not managed it at all.

The Art of Space: Architecting Resilient Studios for Creative Innovation

In the vibrant cultural and entertainment landscapes of 2026, the physical creative studio has undergone a profound structural re-evaluation. Whether it is a high-volume choreography space in a historic theater district, a multi-set digital production soundstage, or a private fine-art loft, the physical layer of the creative workspace is recognized as a vital component of the artistic process. Creative professionals have moved past the era of makeshift workspaces, demanding instead environments that offer absolute structural reliability, safety, and sensory clarity.

5 Tips for Starting Up a Digital Creative Workshop

That raw, electric energy of a shared creative space feels irreplaceable at times, but with so many eyes on NoHo creativity – and so many ways of teaching – taking a hybrid approach via online creative workshops just makes sense. Don’t get me wrong, it requires a massive psychological shift because you and your lesson-plan will need to completely rethink how that teacher-learner connection functions across a screen. Any hands-on, intimate practice – acting, painting, dancing, music lessons, or anything else expressive – into a virtual format can feel almost impossible in the beginning.

Statement Men’s Wedding Bands for Grooms Who Value Design

An obvious men’s wedding band is one that stands out because of its design, material and details rather than the traditional plain gold one of previous generations, and men who are concerned about the construction of things are pushing this category along. Heavier broad bands, an eclectic mixture of metals, textured or hammered surfaces, inlays of wood, meteorites or carbon fiber and stones set in strong bands all fill the field. The wedding ring now speaks for the man as well.

Can You Paint Kitchen Countertops? What Homeowners Should Know Before Starting

Kitchen countertops play a major role in the overall appearance of a kitchen, but replacing them can be expensive and time-consuming. Because of this, many homeowners ask the same question when planning a kitchen refresh: can you paint kitchen countertops instead of replacing them?

How to Tile a Bathroom Floor: Step-by-Step Guide for a Durable, Professional Finish

Learning how to tile a bathroom floor can completely transform the appearance and durability of a bathroom. Tile flooring is popular because it resists moisture, lasts for years, and comes in a wide variety of styles and finishes. However, a successful tile installation depends on much more than simply placing tile on the floor.

Why Digital Games Are Becoming More Theatrical: Suspense, Timing, and Audience Participation

Something has changed in the way digital games are designed. The formats gaining the most traction right now are not the ones with the deepest lore or the most intricate skill trees. They are the ones that make you hold your breath. Games that build to a moment, demand a decision under pressure, and let everyone in the room feel the tension at the same time. The ability to play slot battles is one clean example of this shift: a rising multiplier, a single decision point, and a room full of players watching the same curve climb toward an uncertain end. That is not just a game mechanic. It is a theatrical structure.

Digital Collectibles, Gaming Skins, and the New Pop Culture of Online Ownership

Ten years ago, the idea that a virtual knife skin in a video game could sell for tens of thousands of dollars would have sounded like satire. Today it is routine. The CS2 skin economy alone runs into hundreds of millions of dollars annually, and the communities built around CS2 case opening sites like Clash.gg have developed their own culture, vocabulary, and sense of value that rivals anything happening in traditional collecting circles. Something real has shifted in how people, particularly younger people, think about ownership, status, and what makes a digital item worth caring about.

How Much Does 200ft of Chain Link Fence Cost – A Homeowner’s Guide

Installing a chain link fence is a popular and cost-effective way to secure your property, define boundaries, and enhance curb appeal. Homeowners often wonder, “how much does 200 ft of chain link fence cost?” The answer depends on multiple factors, including fence height, materials, labor, site conditions, and additional features like gates or coatings. Understanding these variables helps homeowners plan effectively and avoid unexpected expenses.
