The Smallest Creature “Magic Beans” Album Release

This band is a fusion of style and place.  From Larnaca, Cyprus, a place I had the opportunity to visit a few years ago, the songs feel drawn directly from the wild, extreme and beautiful landscape, the depth and kindness of its people and the still visible echos of the Turkish occupation.

Buildings abandoned, riddled with bullet holes and entire stretches of the landscape eerily empty.  Ancient ruins scattered about, mountains, desert, gorgeous rugged beaches, Othello’s castle, a tragic and glorious mix of cultures all baking in the heat.

It’s a poet’s land, Cyprus, and full of magic.  So this music is particularly powerful originating there.  “Magic Beans” is contemporary, bold, exquisitely performed, passionate and not at all what you might expect.  Stories full of what matters most in life – love, compassion, man’s struggle to be recognized, valued, admired, and to find meaning.  It’s all here.  I can hear Radiohead and Stone Temple Pilots, but also Pink Floyd and Nirvana.  But with the voices of Stefanos Marnerides and Andreas Matheou and the gorgeous echoing, spirally guitars lifting the beautiful sounds to spiritual heights, they have a sound all their own and well earned I think.

It’s an anthemic album, so full of purposeful, reasoned poetic music. The haunting and relentless drums lead us through their universe, giving a center around which everything  orbits.  The whole album is a vivid and cinematic journey. Someone shoot an epic movie in Cyrpus please, so this amazing music can be the soundtrack.  Maybe these guys can make their own, they have the heart, the force of nature and the sheer talent too, that’s for sure. Absolutely loved it!!!!!!

Favorite track and this is a tough task…”You Are Ready.”

Starveya “Let You In” Single Release

This L.A.-based psychedelic indie rock band serve up this rather lovely, spicy little moody end-of-summer number. It feels like it’s right off a “Lost Boys” soundtrack.

Melancholy, haunting, all twangy melodic guitar and breathless vocals.  Subtle, but deadly catchy…

I love this iconic, sleepy, L.A. kind of music.  You can just hear it playing live in a club, a room stuffed full of a swaying, sweaty audience.  Darkly dressed and winding down. The story is one of loss and love, a kind of anti love song really, always relevant, timeless and achingly truthful.  Starveya is a truly excellent band. They have the kind of presence that compels you to listen, a slow, steady demand, nothing showy or over done.

It’s a perfect single for our Covid days of late summer. They have an album due out next year and I am really looking forward to hearing more from them and maybe even, heaven forbid, actually seeing them perform live…we can all hope I guess.  In the meantime, we have this gorgeous and sweetly sad single to propel us through these disparate days.  All it needs now is a moody video, with an 80s vibe, the dark side of the 80s, not the shiny side of course, and maybe some brooding vampires…love it!!!

Musician Names/Instruments: Starveya is: Aaron Martinez on Lead vocals and guitar, Desi Martinez on Guitar and backing vocals, and Kenny Lockwood on Drums. Additional musicians on “Let You In” include Mathew Meseberg on bass, Paul Reagor on synth and Juan Lopez on Organ.

Could You Change Your Chaotic Lifestyle?

0

Picture1.jpg

The constant thing that keeps us alive is change. If you look around, you’ll find many things not looking like they were ten years ago.

Or, as a better example, look around; who would have thought that you’d have to go into lockdown for such a long time, cancel everything, and go through a pandemic? As a short answer to this, we can’t avoid change. The more we try to resist it, the harder it will be to go through life. So, instead of avoiding change, why not try to accept it?

We all want to improve our lives by changing many things, including getting married, having a baby, moving to another city, going on a trip, or simply changing our eating habits. Change is everywhere, and it is the most dramatic thing that has the greatest impact on our lives. You can run from it, but you can’t hide! It will find you, challenge you, and make you reconsider the way you live your life. You can choose to change your life, or life will choose to change you! It’s better to make a change when you have the opportunity, rather than being forced to. So, how prepared are you when it comes to changing your chaotic lifestyle?

Purpose drives meaning

We can’t choose to avoid unexpected and unpleasant events in our lives. But we get to choose how we respond to these crises and changes. So, it’s all about the power of choice that allows us to live positively. Focusing on living positive provides us with many opportunities to change our lives for the better. Creating opportunities is key for a happy and fulfilled lifestyle. So, how to change your life? Start by spending time removing all the “clutter” out of your life, following more your dreams, and doing more of what makes you happy.

Most people feel like they live a miserable life and find it hard or impossible to make a change. Finding your purpose in life sets a direction for how you decide to live your life. Without focusing a bit on enjoying more of your favorite activities, you’ll feel like your life has no meaning. Without meaning, you’ll spend the rest of your days wondering what’s the best path to walk on, or what purpose life has? Dream big and do big! Purpose drives meaning, so believe you can make a change by finding motivation in things you love.

Create great relationships

Relationships with others are often put aside, that’s why we often feel lonely and depressed. But the truth is that the magic stands in how you succeed in cultivating a great relationship with others. Although it’s true that building a strong and beautiful relationship with someone requires time, effort, and patience – simply think: you have a business, and you need to make it grow. How can you do it? By investing in it.

Yes, the answer to a healthy and beautiful relationship with others is to invest time, respect, and care. It will improve the quality of your life significantly. However, it’s essential to pay attention to who you choose to share your time with. Often, people get foolish around certain people, making mistakes that might impact their lives badly. Make sure you spend your time with qualitative people, to create an environment from which you can learn great things.

Change your diet

Does it sound crazy? Changing your diet could impact your life so much! What you choose to eat has a lot to say about how you feel and act daily. It’s not a secret anymore that food has a big effect on how we function daily. When it comes to our health, it’s hard to tell what harms us. But many factors make us lose our focus, live, and eat chaotically, including being physical inactivity, stressed, obese, having high blood pressure, etc.

All of this can increase the risk of heart disease. So, next time you want to eat that extra piece of cake, think twice. Or, replace it with a small cup of low-sugar ice cream from a gelato shop. It’s a much better choice, along with other foods you should include in your diet so that your body can perform a natural and healthy function. It’s recommended that you limit those added sugars (sodas, pastries, candies), and add more magnesium in your diet. It’ll help you alleviate headaches and tiredness. In other words, give your body the necessary nutrients to grow a better version of yourself.

Take care of your mental health

Your mental health can be influenced by many factors, including the one above (diet). There are many small but important ways you can follow to take care of your mental health. Aside from wanting to change your lifestyle, you need to start taking action. Look around: what affects your mental health most? If it’s the social media, people around you, your job, or bad habits, you need to change something. The importance of taking care of your mental health should be a priority in your life. When it comes to being mentally healthy, you can find many self-care strategies, and we’re not talking about the ones you spend money on that may or may not chill you out.

We’re referring to those that permit you to take a mental health break when you need it. Why do people feel selfish when it comes to relaxing or recharge their batteries? Taking a day off when your body and mind need it could help prevent sickness in your future. Try to do activities you only do when you’re on vacation. Inject that happy medicine into your daily life and celebrate as if you were on vacation. Take some time to meditate! Don’t roll your eyes out there; it’s scientifically proven that meditation can be very effective in someone’s life. Take five or ten minutes daily to meditate, and get rid of those negative thoughts that keep telling you there’s nothing that can help you to live happily again.

Comparing Online Payday Loans For Bad Credit To Car Title Loans

0

Individuals who have low credit scores are rarely given opportunities to borrow more money.

It is the reason why being in a bad financial situation can feel as though it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Each time you need help, it becomes harder and harder to get that assistance. It is why you may be wondering what options are even available to you.

While you are short of options, you do have some. That is very good news, and a quick analysis of the top two options should help you figure out what you will do when you need quick cash.

Payday Loans and Car Title Loans

The two most popular loans you can get when you have a low credit score are car title loans and payday loans such as a payday advance at Personal Money Network. A car title loan is one where you are putting up your car as collateral, while an online payday loan for bad credit usually comes with a high interest rate to compensate for the lack of credit check.

Understanding the Payday Loan

Many people misunderstand payday loans and begin to fear them. In reality, these loans offer a lot of positives to people who need access to money quickly and with minimal hassles. There are almost no other loans where you can get access to money in days, and not have to even prove your creditworthiness.

With online payday loans for bad credit, you get the chance to borrow anywhere from $300 to $1,500 for a few weeks. Keep in mind that such loans are essentially advances on a paycheck, which means you are expected to pay back the loan within one or two paycheck cycles.

How to Best Use Car Title Loans

A car title loan is a very interesting proposition for people who have vehicles with high values. Say you are in a financial bind because you have lost your job for a few months, but you are hopeful of finding a new one soon.

The issue is that you need money now, and you have no way of getting access to more. If you have a car with a relatively high value, but you do not want to sell that car, you can use it to get a loan.

A car title loan means you are using the car as collateral in case you do not pay back the loan. If you ever stop making payments for a few months, the lender will come to you and ask for your vehicle. They will assume the car title and have it towed to their property.

It may sound scary, but it very rarely happens, as the monthly payments on these loans are very manageable. Car title loans have higher interest than bank loans, but not as high as payday loans. The risk of lending money to someone with questionable credit history is present, but it is mitigated by putting the car up as collateral.

Choosing The Loan That is Best For You

One of the questions we often get from people is whether they should be choosing a loan that is giving them access to more money, or they should pick a loan that has the least risk.

It is a valid question, but one that has a simple answer. If you are someone who is already in financial stress, you cannot afford to take on unnecessary risks. Car title loans are tempting, as you can get a lot of money and more time to pay it back. However, a mistake on your car could cause you to lose your car, which would be disastrous.

Payday loans may not give you as much money, while you have a higher interest rate, and they are due within weeks. But you know where you stand. It is a loan that uses interest rate to make up for the lack of credit check.

If you are a few weeks late with your payment, you pay more in interest. You will not lose your car, which is a tool you use to get to and from work and other appointments.

Rebuilding Your Finances

Those who are in a position where they must choose between a car title loan and payday loan need to understand it is not sustainable in the long run. While you can continue to rely on these loans for a few months, you should not be in the habit of taking them out for years.

The best step you can take is to start saving more money so that you have a fund you can use on a rainy day, or if you encounter an unexpected expenditure. But in the meantime, choose payday loans over car title loans, if the need arises.

Helena Lewis Totally True Things: A Socially Conscious Storytelling Show -

Helena D. Lewis is a theatrical scholar-practitioner who uses qualitative research and social work theories to illuminate the nuances of social justice issues that impact marginalized and incarcerated voices. After obtaining her BA in Biology from Rutgers University, Helena developed, implemented and supervised a drop-in center for sex workers with substance use disorders (SUD) for the Community At Risk Reduction (CARR) Program in Newark, New Jersey and helped develop a vocational rehabilitation component for a Department of Corrections (DOC) Residential Community Release Program (RCRP) for women.

Over the past three decades, the number of women incarcerated has increased by eight-hundred percent. This increase can be attributed to untreated mental illness, substance abuse, social and economic disparities, and tougher sentencing laws for women’s drug offenses. However, the current correctional system does not take into consideration the gendered needs of women who are incarcerated and how their reentry into society can be hindered by unresolved grief and loss.

Tell us a bit about your background?

I’m originally from San Diego and got a BFA in Theatre Performance at the University of Colorado. I spent a bit of time in New York as well before moving out to the amazing North Hollywood! I’ve been producing my own sketch shows, improv shows, online comedy with my group the Swell Boys, and more for quite some time. I was a big game show and Survivor fan growing up.

How did you get started in the world of trivia?

I had been hosting trivia nights for a few years and was always thinking of fun competitions for my friends and family. I also host an online, comedic, social-deduction game show on a Twitch channel called Hyper RPG called Spy Island every Wednesday Night so I feel right at home hosting game shows in front of a camera.

How did you come up with the name Pad Play?

I’m a sucker for alliteration and I wanted a quick way to get across the idea of online games that you can play from your home. Play games from your Pad. Pad Play. Boom!

How does online trivia work?

Just grab a team, join the video call, and assign one player to submit their answers via an online form. I’ll ask the questions, and your team will be automatically sent to your own private room so you can talk about the answers with your teammates, just like you would at a bar!

Any tips, tricks to be a winning team?

My advice is to put together a team with a wide, diverse knowledge base. Figure out what you and your teammates are not too knowledgeable about and invite someone based on that. 5 players who are great with science, movies, and geography might not know what injured Dodger hit a game winning home run in the 1998 World Series.

Anything else you’d like to add?

The other thing I’ve done during quarantine is I gathered 87 friends to each recreate one minute of Taken, starring Liam Neeson: I call it…”QuaranTaken.”

I run private events for companies, charities, schools and more. You can find more info at PadPlayGames.com or emailing me at PadPlayGames@gmail.com.

Doc Straw & The Scarecrows “Get on By” Single Release

“Get on By,” the second single from the forthcoming album by Doc Straw & The Scarecrows is warm and wonderful.

A folksy, gentle country sound, beautifully made.  It’s an ode to bravery, strength and honesty and commitment and devotion.

As a vet, Mike Straw, ergo “Doc,” found music to be a fiercely vital part of his life, both while serving and beyond.  Music heals us, and certainly tours of Iraq and Afghanistan must give Mike reason to continue his search for healing through his own very personal musical journey.  There’s a depth to this simple song, a grace to it, as well as a gorgeous Americana sound and visceral sense of place.

“Get on By” is a call to arms in a way, although not the arms of war, but the arms of peace.  It’s a gentle nudge into figuring out how to keep pushing through adversity and struggle and to seeking your soul amongst the battle to survive.  We need songs that show us humanity within our own traumatic and dizzying world right now. Mike’s voice cuts through the noise, his hard-won experience breathes truth into his lyrics, filled with wisdom and free from trope or cliche.  His is an authentic voice and he sings with a softness earned by a life lived, creating a blissfully elevating sound, well supported by the excellence of his band members.

There’s a lot of darkness all around us right now, we need some light and this song gives us that…loved it!!

The GentleLadies at Al Fresco Fridays

***

What’s the NoHo Motto? “NoHo is only as great as its people.”

Meet the GentleLadies, a group of talented young women in the NoHo Arts District who are all about dance and supporting the creative spirit.

The Gentle Ladies are taking over part of the street on Magnolia for Al Fresco Fridays on Friday, October 9 from 6:30-9:15PM.

“We plan to serve the complete GentleLadies experience. Live music, dancing, and above all else pure authentic artistic expression. We’ve invited some of the hottest rising stars of North Hollywood to show what our community is all about. Los Angeles native Alexya Garcia and Texas raised B11ce of Awesome Awesome Shxt will light up the stage and it wouldn’t be a proper GentleLady function without our own ladies showing how we get down. With Caroline Diamond providing the laughs, Allie Costello showing the moves and DJ Jammiiin on the ones and twos all night. Al Fresco Fridays -October 9th- is the show you do not want to miss!” – The GentleLadies

What is the GentleLadies?

The Gentleladies is an innovative, diverse all-female dance collective guiding and cultivating communities to develop their artistic imagination. We accomplish this through teaching dance, hosting events and providing spaces where artists can thrive.

How did the Gentle Ladies become the Gentle Ladies? (Curious about the name)

Frustrated with the lack of female representation in the teaching scene, Ki’Leigh Williams gathered up her closest friends to create something that has never been done before: a customizable, traveling, in studio dance intensive with an all female faculty. Being a group of fierce underdogs with multiple talents, the Gentleladies quickly developed into more than a group of teachers. We have grasped every opportunity that has come our way from performing nationwide to creating North Hollywood’s first ever music festival.

How has COVID affected the GentleLadies?

Unfortunately COVID has affected the Gentleladies in every way possible. From Movement Lifestyle, our home studio where we all met, shutting down to Secret Rose closing, the place we hosted our monthly Open Mics, everything we’ve worked hard to establish here in North Hollywood has been stripped away from us. Being that our main focus as a company is to share our knowledge of dance through teaching and provide a space for artists to congregate, the pandemic has been incredibly difficult to work through. Luckily we are all friends who happen to work together so combining all of our superpowers to navigate through the craziness. Our main focus now is to rebuild our brand, push our creative artistry, and stay relevant on social media so we are stronger than ever once the world returns to some kind of normalcy.

The GentleLadies at Al Fresco Fridays via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

What’s coming up for the GentleLadies?

We are excited to collaborate with the North Hollywood Arts District to bring the community the full Gentleladies experience. It has been so long since we’ve created a show because of the pandemic so being given a platform safe for the public to enjoy what we do is beyond awesome. We also have a ton of new content coming out on all of our social media platforms! Dance tutorials, photoshoots, interviews, you name it, WE ARE ON IT!

Anything you want to highlight?

We would like to take this time to thank Movement Lifestyle, Secret Rose Theatre and every place in between that has helped make our dreams come true. North Hollywood Arts District is home to some of the most talented artists and felt so much pain during these past six months. Although our homes are the first to go, we are in this together, we will not stop.

Thanks for doing everything you can to #KeepNoHoArtsy!

Michael MP Griffen – “The REEL Newsroom”

Michael MP Griffin is an artist whose painting style evokes another era; he is prescient while present in our own time. Griffin’s paintings are rich and thick, reminiscent of the expanse of Van Gogh paintings, while at the same time expressing the seriousness of our contemporary human drama. His deeply layered and skillful paintings are a rare find. The texture and context of his images move viewers from the sardonic, through the paradoxical, to the sublime. Griffin became interested in crowd faces while working in a busy nightclub in San Jose, California:

“And the way the movement happens, creates emotions in the dance floor that become contagious. I learned about this [movement] also from playing music, how music really affects people, eliciting reactions that flow like currents through the crowd.”

Griffin’s crowd scenes on canvas and wood hover between detail and abstraction. He likes at times to acquiesce into a liquid treatment of figures to reveal movement. His works on paper are often simple forms flowing into contrasting backgrounds, seemingly composed of light, and subtle colors to define glowing portraits.

Griffin lives in the California Mountains with his dog Atlas, painting, listening to music, and gardening in his wood cabin. He is more interested in his neighbors and helping the homeless in the community, than in fame. His artist friends respect him and his artwork. We express our gratitude to artists Marjam Oskui of Berlin, and Nikolas Soren Goodich of the Pacific Palisades, California for appearing in this production.

artHYPE is honored to present Michael MP Griffin’s art through the support of Griffin and his generous girlfriend, Odette Leonelli of Lucca, Italy and Redondo Beach, California.

Bushwick Blooze Band “Lonely and Blue” Single Release

This gloriously bluesy single reaches deep into your chest cavity, locates your heart and tears it apart…in the best possible way of course.

It’s a loud, punchy, relentlessly mournful celebration of loneliness.  With a gorgeous soulful guitar, drums that take you to the absolute limit over and over again, a bass that gently pounds and some seriously husky and beautifully authentic vocals.

The guitar tells the story of course and it’s criminally heartbreaking…just as the very best blues guitar always is. Boy do these guys know their stuff.  Brought together by Chas Rio who had a dream, so to speak, of creating a band that worked, both musically and literally.  With brother Dave on guitar and vocals and the rather lovely David Cornejo on drums, together they are the quintessential, hardworking band, with a love for the music and a deep need to live by it.

This new single and comes after their last album release in 2019, “Cryin’ for the L Train.”  Their last album was mostly covers, their favorite songs from their favorite artists.  But “Lonely and Blue” is all original, and you can feel that sweet pain in every line.

I love music like this.  Deeply wrought, finely crafted, meaningful, purposeful and alive.  It’s brutally honest.  The guitar sings and screams and cries while the bass and drums keep us all hooked.  It’s a powerful song perfectly made for the disparate world we live in now…reminding us that without each other we are all utterly lost and, of course, lonely and blue…Loved it!!

Al Fresco Fridays – Music on Magnolia

***

Music |  Nibbles  |  Beverages

NoHo Arts District restaurants are participating in the “L.A. Al Fresco” program where they’ve taken over a lane and created an outdoor dining area on Magnolia between Vineland and Lankershim. It is believed to be the first project of its kind that reclaims roadway space beyond the parking lane for dining purposes. To make Al Fresco Dining on Magnolia a bit more fun, we’ve added Al Fresco Fridays live music from 6:30-9PM! Al Fresco Fridays brings music while you have a nibble and a cocktail while enjoying the neighborhood. NoHo’s Al Fresco Fridays music program sponsored by the NoHo Business Improvement District.  Al Fresco dining program is brought to you by the team at Councilmember Paul Krekorian’s office.

Sidewalk Singers was formed during the Covid-19 pandemic by two world-class LA-based musicians who lost their means of income and wanted to continue to entertain and give back to the community, all while still maintaining social distance protocols. Our goal is to provide a fun, safe, and memorable way for people to celebrate their special day during these tough times AND give back, with 50% of all bookings going directly back to the community! 25% will go directly to the LA Regional Food Bank, and the other 25% will go to support the theaters in danger of closing in their personal community in the Historic Noho Arts District (we send donation receipts) – We also will be doing a “donation only” basis for people who are front of line workers, such as medical staff, educators, law enforcement, grocery clerks etc! To date they have donated more than $4,000 to local causes.

I was trained Suzuki method on violin starting at age five, I taught myself guitar, piano, bass and vocals starting at age 13, and began writing original material, I toured Australia when I was in middle school, performing with an orchestra at the time. A few years back, I was attacked, shot, and beaten. I was told I might never play violin again, and I lost my home and was homeless for two years. I dragged myself out of that situation, and learned to play again. Now I want to succeed with the gift of music I was given.

Movie Reviews – Ava; Enola Holmes

More often than not, skilled workers don’t love the jobs they’re forced by either nature or circumstance to perform.

A case in point is Ava, who as portrayed by the very capable Jessica Chastain, is a very reluctant yet extremely efficient assassin. That she is capable of taking out several unsavory and unlucky (albeit determined) individuals with either a well-placed body blow or (more likely) a well-aimed bullet to the head fails to mollify her skeptical employers. You see, she has developed a habit of talking to her victims before she disposes of them (to see what makes them tick maybe—or perhaps to grant them more screen time). And (not so) naturally her superiors are concerned: John Malkovich, because he is fond of her and sees himself as her mentor, and Colin Farrell because…he’s written that way. (The movie doesn’t really come up with a plausible explanation—and it establishes she is very good at what she does, even when she is set up to fail.) But it’s not just work that’s getting Ava down—she does have a troubled home life complete with a family that feels abandoned and betrayed (there are reasons on both sides) and an ex (Common) who is now about to marry her sister. (And has some problems of his own.)

Lest it seem that my pithy synopsis suggests a certain disdain for the film, I can assure you that Ava is quite watchable, and even entertaining. Chastain rivals Charlize Theron and Uma Thurman in both acting and fighting chops—and she gets to be a bit more rueful than either. Colin Farrell and John Malkovich get to chew some serious scenery as they tangle both with Chastain’s Ava and each other. There are also welcome appearances by Geena Davis (twenty years after her Long Good Night) and Joan Chen (who holds her own in some close encounters with Chastain). The action sequences are well done (if a little drawn out and over the top) and the narrative is such that it could easily lead to a sequel (and dispense with the “backstories). Let’s just hope if Ava sticks to her job that she gets to enjoy it more. (Ava is in theaters and On Demand).

And as long as we’re discussing strong, willful female protagonists, let me put in a good word for Enola Holmes, Sherlock’s younger sister and a fairly good detective in her own right. While Sherlock puts in an appearance (well, more of a supporting contribution, as engagingly portrayed by Henry Cavill), this is really Enola’s story—and the start of a new franchise. And honestly, this would not be a bad idea, since Millie Bobby Brown is quite winning as the determined budding would-be detective eager to emerge from the shadow of…everyone. Early on, her enigmatic mother (Helena Bonham Carter) disappears, and Enola’s quest to find her is waylaid at first by her older brother Mycroft, who is determined to make a lady of her, then by the need to save the young Viscount Tewkesbury from an assassin in the employ of some powerful individuals (Of course, the fate of England is at stake.) The movie adroitly “breaks the fourth wall” at certain times, as the endearing Enola confides in us (sometimes it can be a little too much—but it’s forgivable), and the flashbacks of her mother are well-integrated into the narrative structure. While the mystery at the heart of Enola Holmes is not so mysterious (and as noted by others, Enola is less a mystery solver than a code-breaker), the film itself moves briskly, is populated with quirky characters (including Cavill’s likable, concerned Holmes, Frances de la Tour’s Duchess) and benefits from a director and a writer (Harry Bradbeer and Jack Thorne, from a novel by Nancy Springer) who know enough about the Holmes mystique to find clever ways of tweaking it. Here’s hoping that the sequels allow even more time for Enola and Sherlock to share the screen.    (Enola Holmes is available on Netflix)

We’re Listening to “We Need You!”

Six women create a song and video to inspire a wave of women voters in the presidential election. Their message to millions of women everywhere is simple: “We Need You!”

Brittany, Dahlia, Jessenia, Soleil, Virginia and Ximone are not bandmates. They never formally worked together on any musical projects until they realized that 50 million women who were registered to vote in the 2016 presidential election did not.

Watch coverage of “We Need You!” on CBS New York.

“We knew we needed to do something,” shares Virginia Marcs, a member of the Creative Natives Songwriting Collective that initiated the idea of creating a theme song, “to give women the inspiration to do whatever it takes to make sure their vote counts.”

“We believe that a wave of women voters will be the deciding factor in the 2020 presidential election,” shares Jessenia Vargas, a former Miss Queens pageant winner and alumnus of The American Musical And Dramatic Academy in New York.

“We want to empower the historical turnout needed to honor the 100th anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment and the 55th Anniversary of the Voting Rights Act,” shares Brittany Brook, founder of Moonshadow Music and a Creative Natives Collective member along with Ms. Marcs.

“‘Own your greatness’ has always been my message,” says Soleil Laurent, “and now it’s time for all of us to own how powerful we women can be in politics.”

The Brooklyn raised international folk artist Dahlia Dumont shares, “Some women didn’t like Hillary. Maybe some women like chauvinism. Some feel like the electoral college system makes them feel like our votes don’t matter. Well, now is the time to show that world that our votes do matter.”

The team created a song and music video entitled “We Need You,” encouraging women to share the song and video using the hashtag #WeNeedYou2020 with the goal of inspiring millions of women to vote in record numbers in the 2020 Presidential Election.

“We are women who care. Women who seek to use whatever talents and energy we have,” shares Ximone, a recording artist and founder of the digital music magazine Siren Magazine. “We are willing to be seen, stand up, and be counted,” she continues. “Our time is now.”

Spotlight on the Valley Food Bank

***

The NoHo Arts District dot com team should frame this phrase: “NoHo is only as great as its people.”

We are happy to share the successes of our local North Hollywood folks and would like to give a big round of applause to NoHo’s own health and fitness expert and personal trainer and adventure travel tour operator Jack Witt. Every year Jack does a volunteer project to help an aspect of our North Hollywood community. This year he’s done a food donation drive for the Valley Food Bank. During these unprecedented and scary times, we need to make sure our safety nets are secure but open our hearts to those in need. While dropping off his food donations, Jack  had a chat with their director, William Hernandez.

Jack Witt food drive for Valley Food Bank via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

How long have you been with Valley Food Bank?

I joined the team in March 2004 (16 years).

What keeps you motivated? What drives you?

Each and every day we receive feedback from struggling families how the food resources and other essentials have made a difference to them and their family.

How have things changed at Valley Food Bank since the pandemic started?

Great question. Without any notice or time to prepare we shifted gears to acquire as much food as we could distribute. Then we needed to convert to a farmers market style of distribution to comply with social distancing and minimal to no contact distribution. We served 10,000 additional families last month. Lots of food! And we’re happy that support has continued to make this happen.

What type of community and civic partners do you typically team up with?

Anyone and everyone that wants to help. Elected officials have been great as well as The Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and several Rotary Clubs and foundations.

Jack Witt food drive for Valley Food Bank via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

What’s the best way people can help?

With the limitation of 10 volunteers per day to maintain social distancing and a safe environment for volunteers, the best way to help is donation of food and hygiene supplies and/or cash.

When things get back to normal, what’s ahead for Valley Food Bank?

I believe with have established a new level of support for struggling families and will work hard to maintain sufficient resources to continue our campaign – Fighting Hunger – Feeding Hope.

Making My First Independent Feature Film – An Update

I am busy writing and re-writing at the moment.  In full flood, as it were, now I have decided on getting my film into pre-production early 2021, with a view to film in the fall of 2021.

So what to tell you about the process?  Apart from a blow by blow of my somewhat excruciating shuffling of my script, not much honestly.  Covid has kept me home, which, as I am sure you are all aware of by now through your own bitter experience, hardly seems to give more time for anything. But I have managed to focus my aim a little.  Trying to stay off the TV and away from all mention of the election, which is mind killing.

How to write in what should be a vacuum and is, in reality, much more like a fishbowl?  I wish I had a better answer for you.  I still seem to find it easier to work later in the day, once it’s dark even.  The world retreats and, like a classic trombone shot, my script comes frighteningly into focus.

So on I plod.  Honing and rearranging. Deleting and undeleting. But always moving closer to the finish line.  I am close to the point at which a few very select friends will be getting copies in their inbox for notes…which is a bit terrifying, but very, very necessary.

I have been considering entering my script in some screenwriting competitions.  These, when successful, can give credence to your project, if you plan on self producing, as far as raising money, or even casting well.  They are also an excellent opportunity to get good notes, although not all do that, so check before you enter if that’s part of your goal.  Also they are about $35 to enter usually, so be selective.  Pick the contest that best suits the genre of your story.

If you win there is prize money and the possibility of interest from agents and producers etc. Even if you don’t win and have something good, you might get a nibble or two of interest, so that’s worthwhile. Ultimately it’s all about putting what you have out into the universe one way or another and bravely facing whatever occurs.

Here are a few very interesting articles I read recently on financing a film….so much information!! But well worth the read if you are seriously considering doing this mad, mad thing.

https://blog.kitsplit.com/fund-your-movie-guide-film-finance/

https://www.forbes.com/sites/legalentertainment/2016/06/08/how-to-finance-an-independent-film/#27c799ba7e34

https://www.indiewire.com/2015/04/the-7-dirty-secrets-of-film-financing-63566/

So with the script on the way and the financing of the film also buzzing around in my head, I am basically bookending the project really.  Since quite possibly a large part of the fundraising is also a form of marketing in a way…if I choose to use a variety of fundraising platforms, crowd funding will undoubtably be source – a basic of indie film now.  Crowdfunding has a naturally built in audience, already supporting and waiting for the completed film. And, if they are happy with the result, ready and willing to share it and promote it along with their involvement as a producer.

Making a film this way is like building a company.  The script is a business plan of sorts.  An inspiration for raising the capital. Every dollar invested has to be accounted for and each share of the potential profits assigned correctly.  Maybe it’s closer to running numbers.  Either way I have about the same experience of each and no real passion for either.  But to make a film one must be all things, or it will just never happen.

Onwards and upwards then and back to the core of it all…the words, the story.

How I use Flowers to Decorate My Home Interior

0

Flowers are fresh; they are natural. When I placed flowers in the room, it immediately lit up the room by spreading its fragrance throughout. Since ancient times, people have included flowers within their attire and in a room’s decor.

So, I went to the internet and found many online shops that ship flowers internationally. This gave me an idea to decorate my home with these natural beauties. I have actually seen 5 spots where I can place the flowers without losing relevance with my existing room décor, floor, and furniture style.

Now, I know, in modern times, the use of flowers isn’t as relevant as much. Nor can we find similar varieties of flowers around us, in our localities. My local florist does an excellent job of growing and selling the prominent peaks. Still, uncommon beautiful flowers like guelder roses are hard to find.

In the Hallway

I have always thought that the hallway looks empty and could use a bit more designing components. I just couldn’t find anything that would complement in that odd place.

Since the ceiling in the hallway is way high, and as we enter the room through this path, space requires something that spreads tall and is colorful to jolly me up while going through. Helen Green Design gave me the perfect solution. A mixture of green and purple hydrangeas, guelder roses, and dahlias in an elegant vase is how I decorated my hallway.

The Table Row

It is still customary in some cultures to decorate the dining table with flowers. For this, one actually needs a big table that can accommodate the flower vases beside the plates. Since we will be eating here with the flowers right in front of us, white flowers seemed like the best choice. I went with snow-white roses in a dark vase to contrast the setting.

Nightstand or Vanity Table

Actually, putting flowers in the vanity table is popular among ladies. I found that it is actually an outstanding practice as the smell and aroma of flowers lets me sleep peacefully, dream the good dreams. Waking up and looking at fresh, natural flowers also lifts up my energy. I mixed a bit of eucalyptus with other flowers to help me breathe right and clear my lungs.

The Coffee Table

Let’s face it, the coffee table is often left empty. The coffee table in my apartment is also placed at the center of the living room. So, whenever one enters the room, the coffee table comes to attention.

I opted to put some purple alliums in a transparent glass jar on the table. The color was necessary while the large heads also give the illusions of more space being decorated, and the room looks full. On the other hand, the transparent jar matches the transparent glass of the coffee table.

Decorating Shelves

Besides the coffee table, I also happen to have a shelf in the living room. Now, the rack is there to show off my showpieces, expensive art collections. All the modern, metallic design arts made the shelf look all materialistic. So, I mixed it up with flowers, bringing colors and nature to this materialistic world.

NoHo Sleep Out

Did you know? Every night in LA more than 65,000 people sleep out on the streets. They have no choice.

NHHA is organizing a  “Sleep Out”— an immersive event where people sleep out at home/in their yards/on their balconies (or outside, socially-distanced on-site) to develop awareness/empathy about homelessness, while also participating in a fundraiser to support their drop-in program improvements.

The fun part of the “Sleep Out” is a Zoom show with educational segments, comedians and performers. The all-ages portion will run from 6:30pm to 9pm, with an “after party” on Zoom from 9-11pm.

NHHA will be showing the broadcast live (but socially distanced) from the St. Matt’s campus, produced by Loft Ensemble. (Much material will be pre-recorded). Much of the talent is local—Studio City/NoHo, including musicians, the comedian Brian Kiley, the composer Joseph Bishara, Rob Mayes, Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre.

How Mask Mode Is Reflected In Fashion And Art

0

The ongoing novel COVID-19 pandemic has caused some massive disruptions all over the globe.

Societies have to get used to quite dystopian conditions such as maintaining social distance, avoiding crowded places, constantly using sanitizers, and wearing masks. College and university students are studying online, and the whole education question is kind of uncertain. Sounds like some futuristic sci-fi scenario, but the pandemic brought it to reality.

After more than half of 2020, mask mode became a new norm. Even more, it is quite interesting to note that it has leaked in both fashion and art to one degree or another. Students have found new inspiration for ideas about some essays about art and fashion. While these things are ever-changing and different resources, for example https://phdessay.com/free-essays-on/art/ can show the art-history and much more interesting facts. New creative ways to develop a thesis statement and defend it provide more space for creative and critical thinking.

The new norm

The first few months of the pandemic were quite stressful for everyone, and people were panic-buying masks, and everything began with simple disposable face protection that can be found in every grocery. This panic led to a logical shortage of the commodity for everyone, which forced people to craft their own masks and this is where they began to leak in fashion and art. Firstly, people expressed their style through different prints on homemade masks, and this quickly became both a fashion trend and business opportunity.

The development in fashion

Crafty teens decided to open creativity and support their finance stability through the creation of various prints for masks and sell them to others. This was picked up by another teens – young people quickly popularized customized face protectors through their online presence. Naturally, online celebrities picked up the trend and further popularized it, thus affecting the fashion industry.

As a result, masks became a new thing in the fashion clothing industry by appearing on the fronts of boutiques and writers promoting them in famous magazines such as Vogue. From the psychological perspective, people are likely to state that this situation is a result of people’s nostalgia for previous times, and they won’t be wrong. The same applies to the fact that people want at least some way to distinguish themselves.

After all, mask mode fashion moved far as to creating masks with intricate embroidery for brides to wear. The demand is considerable as the strictest quarantine measures have been lifted and young people want to proceed with their wedding plans. It is highly doubtful that a bride would want to wear a simple mask from the store to her wedding if it is possible to highlight this year’s mood through wedding photos.

Movement to art

            While fashion has definitely adopted mask mode to the fullest, it is important to mention art as well. Various marketing pieces such as print advertisements and billboards now feature people wearing bright and spectacular masks. Visual artists have adjusted as well and they often create paintings to emphasize the moods of 2020 by picturing people wearing masks. The same goes for different art exhibitions and fine craft shows where people present their creative ways of explaining the pandemic through masks – they can be created from sports shoes to explain humanity’s ability to adapt or straight plague doctor headpieces to show off their vision.

             The pandemic of COVID-19 forced people to wear masks, yet they managed to keep their bright spirits by turning them into stylish accessories and pieces of art. Fashion and art specialists will definitely mark this year as an entertaining piece of history. All-in-all, this whole trend shows that society is quite robust in its desire to maintain a somewhat normal life, and even pandemic can become an instrument of expressing oneself.

How to exercise your social skills

0

I’m sure that many of y’all tried to be real-life James Bond, who talks with confidence to anybody around him and makes himself the most likeable person during an evening. I’m going to tell you a secret.

Nobody is born perfect, and even you can be that person. Being a good social person can be learnt, just the way you learn how to play on the piano. The most important thing is to practice. But no beginning is easy, so in this article, I will give you a jump start, by showing you some ways to be more social.

Up your small talk game

Small talks can often be cringy, but with enough practice, you can master it quickly. Some general rules tend to lead to success when it comes to small talk. The success being, avoiding long silences.

The first thing you should do is to make a compliment. People often tend to be defensive when they meet a new person. But with a compliment, you can break the ice and make them more comfortable. If you know or heard something about the person, you can complement their jobs or recent achievement. If not, you can just make some nice words about their attitude or physical appearance. Don’t be pushy or exaggerated; only find something that you appreciate about the other person and say it.

After you’ve set the tone for the conversation, and asked a few ‘get to know’ questions comes the most challenging part. When you both, nothing has to say anymore. To avoid this, always ask “why” questions, when people have the chance to express their opinions. And when it comes to you never end your sentences with “no”, “never”. Let the conversation and thoughts flow, and always express your more profound thoughts. People usually tend to like people because of their personality, not their appearance. So make sure to express yourself, but make sure that the conversation has a healthy 50-50 split and you let the other person talk as well.

And last but not least, try not to be too negative. Don’t be that person who has a conspiracy theory about everything, and always blame politics. Try to find thighs that you both are enthusiastic about, and you can express your positive and exciting thoughts.

Create a good impression in a group

If you’re not in a one on one talking situation, then it’s less likely that a cringy silent will appear. So in these kinds of cases, you will have another purpose, to be the star of the group. However, in a group, it could be hard to keep a healthy balance when you’re not too much, nor too little.

If you’re new in a group, or nobody knows nothing about each other then you can just wait for your moment to shine. Don’t be too much of a leader, some other charismatic people might find that offensive, and you will have a bad start. And never, ever, under any circumstances don’t tell jokes to break the ice or to be funny. Nobody likes that dude who starts with a joke.

Also, when you have to listen to other people you can still be an active listener. Just make sure you’re there, and not messaging others. Just make a few nods with your head, keep eye contact and laugh at jokes. There is no need to always verbally approve what the other person said, just make sure you’re there. It’s very important to be supportive of other people because later on, they will do the same to you. So give respect to get respect.

Now, let’s talk about the real deal. The part when you talk and when you have to shine. First of all, you have to decide whether or not the conversation is more of a formal or an informal one so far. If it’s more formal, then try to be more serious and on the subject. Try to show your professional life and interest. But if there is informal talking, in a pub or something, then you can bring out all your funniest stories. Telling funny stories will show the others that you’re an experienced person with a good sense of humour. And when you tell a story, make sure you put some acting in it. For example, use different voice tones, various postures, you can use props like glass or something that you can find nearby. The most important is to show that you’re a colourful person.

Create social events

If you want to be more social or at least to be better at it, you have to meet people. And if there is not a single event near you, you can just create one. a game night where you can invite your friends might be a perfect idea for this. If you do this at your home, you can be sure that it holds you back to be the best version of yourself because you will meet them in a familiar place.

If you want to hang out with your buddies, the things are more straightforward. You just get a table, a pack of cards and some snacks. The point is to have a good laugh and to catch things up with your friends. Therefore you should play a simple card game like poker, blackjack, rummy, or anything else. If you have some free time it’s always a good idea to practice a bit.

On the other hand, if you want to make mixed-gender game night, you should make some more preparations. First of all, you should think about a fun game to play. There are many options on the list, or if you have a friend who owns a lot of board games you can ask him to bring a few, and you will decide the game later on. Next, it’s always a good point to prepare something yourself. Everybody will appreciate more your homemade, healthy snacks rather than some bags of chips. If you do this, the rest will go on, stories will come up, and you will surely have a good time together. Just pay attention that during the game don’t act like a childish. Whether you’re winning or losing, make sure you do that with dignity.

Wrap up

The most important thing about being an excellent social person is to exercise it. You can’t be the life of a party if you’re staying in front of a computer reading jokes all day. Be brave and attend social events. You can be better at socializing only if you do that over and over.

Five Best Financial Practices for Newlyweds

0

Congratulations on getting married! You’ve both enjoyed the romance and the ceremony, and now it is time to get to the nuts and bolts of living together and jointly managing your new family’s finances.

This article will set forth the five best financial practices for newlyweds and comes from the office of a noted bankruptcy attorney in Philadelphia. Heed this advice, and you will avoid the most common arguments and financial pitfalls that lead to bankruptcy or divorce.

1.   Disclose Everything About Your Financial Situation

If you two have not had this conversation yet, now is the time. Pour a glass of wine, sit down with pen and paper, and list all of your debts including student loans, credit cards, and any support obligations.

Next, list all of your sources of income and amounts. Share your paper with one another. If there are any surprises, talk them through. You want to begin your marriage with an honest assessment of your individual financial situations.

2.   Pledge to Live Within Your Means

Now that you know how much you each make and how much you each owe, it is time to pledge to live within your means. You do this by crafting a budget. Your budget will include all or some of the following:

  • Mortgage or rent;
  • Homeowners or renters insurance;
  • Utilities;
  • Cable/internet
  • Cell phone;
  • Car payment;
  • Car repairs and maintenance;
  • Tolls and fuel and other commuting expenses;
  • Auto insurance;
  • Health Insurance;
  • Copays;
  • Groceries;
  • Household supplies;
  • Personal care and grooming;
  • Student loan payments;
  • Credit card payments;
  • Spousal or child support payments;
  • Entertainment;
  • Holidays and gifts;

Couples are free to choose which expenses they contribute to jointly, and which they pay individually. For example, a couple might decide to contribute equitably to a joint account to provide for household expenses, healthcare and maintain individual accounts from which to pay all of their personal expenses and debts. Another example would be for a couple to contribute all of their income to their joint account, withdraw an agreed sum\ for spending money, and otherwise pay all bills from that joint account.

Financial arrangements are as varied as couples themselves. Discuss what would work best for you, and be prepared to disagree and then come to a compromise. Keep in mind also that whatever you initially decide to do is not set in stone. Plan to periodically revisit your budget and how you pay for things and adjust as necessary. Sitting down for this discussion should happen at least once a quarter, or whenever a major expense comes up.

3.   Pledge to Create a Joint Emergency Savings Account

This is an essential step to financial security. Being prepared in case of an unexpected large expense means you do not have to resort to charging that expense and paying exorbitant interest.

Conventional wisdom dictates that you should have at least 6-8 months of expenses saved for emergencies. This will take a while to amass, so start now by each contributing 10% of take-home pay to a joint savings account.

Let’s say your take-home pay combined is $75,000 annually. Contributing 10% of income to your emergency account comes to $7500 a year or $625 a month. If this amount is not in your current monthly budget, you must either find ways to cut back or find ways to make more money. If you save $625 a month for a year, you will not only have $7500, but you will have earned an additional $379.20 in interest at 0.10%. Not much, but better than paying interest!

By way of contrast, if you needed an emergency roof repair that cost $7500 and you had to charge it to your credit card, you would have to pay that off over time and pay interest. Let’s say you charged it to a card with 16% interest, which is pretty low. If you could afford to pay $625 a month towards that debt, it would take you fourteen months to pay it off and you will have paid $727.76 in interest.

Start to put that $625 into emergency savings each month now. Not only will your money pay you, but you will save $727.76 on that big emergency expense.

In a worst-case scenario, if you can afford to pay only the monthly minimum of $175 on that $7500 charge, it will take you 309 months to pay it off, and you will have paid a total of $9459.53, almost $2000 in interest alone!

Start saving now. The peace of mind you will both feel knowing that you are financially prepared for any emergency that arises is priceless.

4.   Pledge to Eliminate Credit Card Debt

You have seen in the above example how credit card debt grows and can become either unmanageable or plague you for years. Resolve to pay off all credit cards as soon as you can.

One way to do so is to pick the card with the highest interest rate and pay that one off first, putting as much as you can towards that debt and paying the minimum on all other cards, When that debt is paid, start paying off the card with the next-highest interest rate, and so on. During this process do not use your credit cards.

Another way to pay off your credit cards, if you need more motivation, is to pay off the smallest balance first. This gives you both more immediate positive feedback and can motivate you to pay off your other cards in the same way.

Another benefit of paying off credit card debt is that your credit rating will improve significantly because your debt-to-income ratio improved. When it is time for you to purchase your first car or home, lenders will offer you better interest rates and terms.

5.   Pledge to Save for Retirement

Start when you are young, especially if your employer offers to match your contributions to the company 401(k). If you do not contribute, you are leaving free money on the table!

Starting to save even just $100 a month toward retirement when you are 25 years old is exponentially more fruitful than starting to save when you are 35. The 25-year-old will have saved almost twice as much as the 35-year-old by the time they are 65, thanks to compound interest.

Let’s say the Smiths and the Joneses both invest $100 a month at a 5% annual compound rate of return in the primary breadwinner’s 401(k). The Smiths begin investing at age 25, putting away $100 every month until 65. The Joneses begin saving $100 a month at age 35.

An extra ten years of saving means that the Smiths have about $162,000 in their 401(k), while the Joneses have $89,000. The Smith’s’ balance is nearly double the Jones’, and the Smiths contributed only $12,000 more of their own money. And this is without considering employer matching funds, or if the 401(k) can perform better than 5%, which is fairly conservative.

Any successful financial plan begins with a full and frank discussion. Best of luck!

Online Acting Classes

Looking for an online acting class?

There are a lot of them out there, especially now. If you are considering an online acting class, here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. You are putting your emotional vulnerability in the hands of someone.
  2. There is no official certificate for being qualified. Anyone can call themselves an acting teacher, and with a lot of online classes going on, there are a lot of new people out there.
  3. You are making an investment; financially, personally, and energetically. Do your research and make the best decision for you.
  4. Audit 3-5 classes to get a comparison and see what is out there.

Here are a few questions to answer when considering an online acting class:

  1. How long has the teacher been doing this work?
  2. Do they have a website? How long in business?
  3. Are they a solo teacher or do they work for a school? And why?
  4. What is their curriculum?
  5. How much is the class?
  6. How many people in the class?
  7. Will the classes be recorded? If so who will see them?
  8. How often will you actually work in the class?
  9. Any reviews or references?
  10. Why are they teaching on line classes?
  11. What is their vision statement about their work?
  12. What is their technique?
  13. What is their background? Educationally and professionally.
  14. How long a commitment do you need to make?
  15. What specifically will you get out of the class?
  16. Can you audit the class?
  17. Do they charge for the audit?
  18. When auditing a class, is it an observation audit or a participating audit?
  19. How will the teacher “see” you and “get” who you are?
  20. What techniques and exercises happen in the class?

Most importantly, it has to “feel” right and be a fit for you. It is very personal.

I think finding a good acting teacher is like finding a doctor, a fitness coach, or a therapist. You want to be “seen”, challenged, pushed, yet feel safe.  If it doesn’t feel right take a good look at why. You can and should try a class and see how it goes. Be cautious about those requiring a long term commitment and a lot of money upfront.  Your concerns can be great instincts, trust them. After all, so much of acting is about instinct.

Good luck!

Gallery Owner Spotlight | Rita McBride and Glen Rubsamen

Often we preclude how gifted gallery owners are at setting the stage for our art-viewing pleasure. And too often we take for granted those who curate both space and exhibitions, without asking what the connection to the art world gallery owners have.

Last month, LA Art Show at the NoHo Arts District featured Bi•no•mi•al•No•men•cla•ture and the Open Wall Salon with Kristin Posehn’s beautiful contribution “Manic Castle Hash”. Both Rita and Glen were kind enough to share some insight into their own professional trajectories, and additionally shed light into what inspired Open Wall Salon’s creative and special inception.

Q:           What is your relationship to the Art World, and how did you first become interested in the arts?

A:            Both Rita and I are visual artists and have been sharing studios all around the world for last 30 years. I am originally from LA, born in the Hollywood Hills, and Rita and I met in the late 1980’s at LACE in it’s downtown location. Rita was one of the preparators there, freshly graduated from CalArts, and I was the exhibiting artist with my first solo presentation after graduating from UCLA.

It was love at first sight.

Q: How was Open Wall Salon conceived/created?

A:            Both Rita and I were inspired by our local museums growing up. The Des Moines Art Center in Des Moines, Iowa where Rita is originally from, was a radical place in the 1960’s and so was the Pasadena Art Musuem under the guidance of Walter Hopps (before Norton Simon). I am a painter with an interest in urban landscapes. Rita is a sculptor working largely with public projects. We moved back to LA and to this studio on West Adams Blvd a few years ago. Rita starting immediately working outside, on the facade of the building, and we were both inspired by the continuous struggle between additive and subtractive actions on the walls of buildings in the neighborhood. Advertising posters and graffiti tags are constantly added and immediately over-painted by the city in a deliberate attempt to neutralize the cityscape. The city uses a random assortment of colors, none of which match the original color of the buildings, creating an abstract composition that erases the content of the actions but also reinforces their composition.

Q:           What message do you hope people glean while visiting?

A:            At 5601 West Adams there is a 40 foot cinderblock wall protected by a steel picket fence that encloses a narrow strip of land on which two mature fan palms reside. In early 2018 the aspiring artist duo Ava and Laeo, spray-painted the Latin binomial for the Mexican Fan Palm, Washingtonia Robusta, on the wall and two days later it was erased by a rough overpainting in bluish gray. Binomial nomenclature is a scientific system for naming all the worlds fauna and flora, giving each a name composed of two parts, both of which use Latin grammatical forms, although they can be based on words from other languages. The first part of the name – the generic name – identifies the genus to which the species belongs, while the second part – the specific name – identifies the species within the genus.

Q: How do you curate and select rotating exhibitions?

A:            Following on this initial event, new additions and subtractions have occurred at semi-regular intervals highlighted by sporadic Saturday Salon gatherings. The next intervention on the wall was in September 2018 by German artist Elmar Hermann, Entitled Limes Germanicus. In February of 2019 Mexican Artist Gabriel Kuri installed a text piece on the wall, Accumulation puts an end to the impression of chance, followed in June by Niko Chodor with his work entitled Locationaccumulation and in September with Christoph Beyer’s mural entitled Electric Pitstop. In August 2020 Kristin Posehn installed the most recent intervention entitled Manic Castle Hash which will remain on view until the end of November.

“Bi•no•mi•al•No•men•cla•ture / Open Wall Salon is an initiative of Rita McBride and Glen Rubsamen, it is an investigation into the possibility of continuous change.”

Many thanks to Rita McBride and Glen Rubsamen for their candor and bright spirits, which shine through in both their words and their beautiful contribution to Los Angeles vis a vis Open Wall Salon.
