Leash Training 101

Leash training a dog can really be difficult. Dogs don’t like to be held back with something foreign, like a leash, so it can cause frustration and more pulling.

Honestly, a leash doesn’t come naturally to a dog. How to handle being on a leash has to be taught and that consistent communication has to be maintained for the life of the dog.

Most of the time, when a leash is put on a dog, it creates a need to want to pull more. Opposition reflex is a natural thing that happens and works against you needing your dog to hang next to you. When they feel pressure, they push against it. We do the same thing in many ways as humans. Someone tells you, don’t hit the red button, what do you want to do? If you are in an altercation with someone that is about to get physical, not that you ever would do that, but maybe in your youth, haha, if you were held back physically by a friend, the adrenalized instinct is to push through being held back. Dogs feel the same. It can even escalate their intensity when pulling towards certain things.

So how do we fix it? Well, there are endless training techniques and tools to use, but I’m going to cover some leash basics.

If your dog pulls and gets to where they want to go, even their favorite potty spot, you are actually teaching them to pull. Truly by just letting your dog have a tight leash by moving in the direction they want, they feel that tight leash and they are able to take a step, you are rewarding their pulling and teaching them to pull to get where they want to go. It’s a hard habit to break, but that is the first concept important to understand. By allowing it, you are teaching them to do it.

Next is to learn how to use leash pressure for guidance. It’s about having a leash that has tension, is taught, in the opposite direction your dog wants to go. I like to call it a leash communication dance. Once your dog takes a step in towards the tension rather than pulling away from it, you release the leash tension and reward with a verbal marker word like “good” and continue moving until the dog pulls again. The dog pulls, you go in the opposite direction with tension, dog gives into it towards you, “good”. Rinse and repeat!

Here are some notes on the tension. You aren’t supposed to really pull the dog. It’s an art to hold onto leash tension when your dog pulls without pulling your dog. If you pull the dog, it doesn’t teach the dog anything. You have to just hold tension and the dog makes the decision to walk to you and you loosen the leash as a reward. Also, you don’t want to hold the leash up in the air. There is no guidance in that. You want to guide the dog with the leash more horizontally, to the side. Think about guiding the head where you want him to go. I mention that because you don’t want to do pressure back down your dog’s spine either. There is no direction in that. It needs to be more horizontal and to the side of the dogs head or body. That’s direction they can follow, like a horse. They can’t follow direction up in the air or down the back of the spine. These turns, you are doing them as much as you need to to where your dog doesn’t get to take one step where they want to go by pulling.

Now let’s talk about leash tugs. This is a pop and release of the leash. It starts with slack and ends with slack. It’s a way to interrupt your dog focusing in the wrong direction or just to get their attention. It should be done AFTER your dog understand leash pressure. When your dog is easily moving in towards the leash pressure rather than away from it, then you can try a few tugs to help your dog be more aware of your body language. A tip when it comes to a leash tug is you can’t tug a leash that’s already tight. So if your dog is already pulling and you tug the leash when it’s tight, then you are just pulling your dog, not training. You have to bend a bit to create slack to give a tug and a verbal command like “let’s go” and end with slack and it can get your dogs attention where you can move in a different direction or get your dog to slow down with you.

Hopefully these tips give you the start on learning more about leash pressure, guidance and tug communication to start helping your dog bond with you on a walk by caring where you are at and where you want to go.

A Cinematic Remedy for Post-Political Convention Withdrawal

I understand completely—we’re now at the end of two weeks of conventions and you’re wondering how you’re going to cope in the foreseeable future.

And that’s why, as my Public Service announcement, I’m going to recommend some favorite films about politics (or those with overt political elements). Again, this is purely subjective, so if you don’t find your favorite film among my choices (as in “Where is Dr. Strangelove?,”), rest assured I may still believe it’s a fine film—it’s just not one I return to time and again.

The Manchurian Candidate – John Frankenheimer’s film of the Richard Condon novel (as adapted by George Axelrod) is one of my favorite films overall, a peerless blend of intrigue, suspense and dark humor (McCarthy-like Senator James Gregory to Machiavellian wife/monster mother Angela Lansbury: ‘Just how many Commies are supposed to be on this list?”). Frank Sinatra is superb as an officer and ex-prisoner of war beset by some “crazy dreams,” and he is matched by Lawrence Harvey as a cold, unwitting dupe of some diabolical forces. It never fails to entertain—and some of it continues to be profoundly disturbing.

Seven Days in May – As long as we’re on a Frankenheimer kick, this is a good follow-up, as military man Burt Lancaster tries to engineer a coup against what he deems to be a passive president (Fredric March). Conflicted aide Kirk Douglas nicely understated) and Edmund O’ Brien help save the day, and there are a number of well-scripted and directed confrontations throughout to maintain the tension, including one between Lancaster and March that should be familiar if you’re a TCM viewer.

Advise and Consent – Otto Preminger’s political panorama has nominal star Henry Fonda hoping his appointment to Secretary of State is ratified, but dang if there isn’t plenty of colorful skullduggery along the way, what with Don Murray investigating Fonda’s past political leanings, George Grizzard digging up dirt on Murray, Charles Laughton’s Southern senator scheming behind the scenes. It’s all quite engrossing, no matter how many times you see it.

A Face in the Crowd and All the King’s Men – I’m putting these two together because they both contain protagonists who are initially sympathetic ‘country boys’ who are corrupted by power (or was this corruption already at their core, but just well disguised?). Both are hard-hitting films that address both the political system but also the power of the media. Andy Griffith’s Lonesome Rhodes and Broderick Crawford’s Willie Stark are career performances, and they’re ably abetted by strong support from Patricia Neal, Walter Matthau (A Face in the Crowd), John Ireland and Mercedes McCambridge (All the King’s Men).

The Best Man, The Candidate, Bulworth – Many good films are set along the campaign trail. Henry Fonda’s decent but indecisive Presidential candidate goes toe to toe with unscrupulous Cliff Robertson in The Best Man, though the proceedings are stolen by former President Lee Tracy, while Robert Redford’s Candidate is undeniably handsome and charismatic as he is pushed and pulled through a campaign in which he is sometimes more of a bystander than a participant. Warren Beatty’s Bulworth is an incisive political satire with Beatty’s Bulworth garnering some “street cred” and new support when he starts spouting the unvarnished truth. (Of course, he also gains some enemies along the way.)

Dave and The American President – Both are modern political fantasies (don’t take it from me—feel free to examine the world around us) that are engaging and entertaining—and sometimes persuasively assert that change is possible—under the right conditions. Both also benefit tremendously from the charm of the leads and supporting players; Michael Douglas has rarely seemed more likable or committed as the American President who tries to come to terms with both new love (Annette Bening) and a re-awakened social conscience, while Kevin Kline’s Dave takes the place of the look-alike President (Kline does a fine job of delineating the different personas) while First Lady Sigourney Weaver) is at a temporary loss about how to handle the new and improved President. And there’s the added bonus of Frank Langella as a determined opponent and a magical Charles Grodin as Dave’s enterprising accountant.

Election – Renee Witherspoon’s Tracy Flick will stop at nothing to become class president, while well-meaning teacher Matthew Broderick will stop at nothing to prevent it—even sponsoring an easy-going jock to run against her. Alexander Payne’s political satire goes off in unexpected directions, as many small (and not-so-small) indiscretions have profound repercussions later on. The tone never falters and neither does the wit in Payne’s adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s novel. It’s always worth a look.

Lincoln – Daniel Day-Lewis’s Lincoln agonizes, wheels and deals, demands concessions and meets with all kinds of responsible and unsavory individuals in his quest to push through the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery (and follow through on his Emancipation Proclamation). It’s a story of backroom dealings and inner turmoil, as Lincoln has his country, his family and his legacy very much on his mind. Steven Spielberg’s intimate epic is among his better recent films and benefits from a strong screenplay by Tony Kushner (based on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s book Team of Rivals) and a quietly compelling Day-Lewis performance at the center of it all.

The Last Hurrah – Another of my favorite films, from director John Ford. Spencer Tracy’s principled but roguish Mayor Frank Skeffington engages on a final campaign—not just for another term, but a last gasp of old-school politics that is less media-driven and more old-school, complete with Rotary Club visits and outdoor rallies. He is accompanied by nephew Jeffrey Hunter and aided and abetted by what seems to be assemblage of the best character actors in Hollywood: Basil Rathbone, John Carradine, Pat O’Brien, Donald crisp, Wallace Ford, Frank McHugh. It’s a warm, moving drama with a sterling Tracy performance; the only flaw is in the cartoonish nature of Tracy’s opponent. (Charles Fitzsimmons – Maureen O’Hara’s brother). As Donald Crisp’s Cardinal says, “Has it come to this?” Well then again, maybe it’s not so farfetched after all…

Jeff “R U Hip 2 the Revolution” Single Release

This is a really well-crafted song.  Jeff Clark has been a musician all his life and you can tell he is deeply committed to his music. “R U Hip 2 the Revolution” is the first single from his forthcoming album, “My Last CD,” which drops in November.

Jeff is based in Key West and there are a lot of cultural influences colliding in this track.  Funk, reggae, rap, rock, folk and a little twist of americana, all converging to create a really nice little festival sound, an authentic and with an almost live feel. Live music!! I miss it!!  Spoken word and catchy vocals mix with a really hooky and engaging message result in a great radio song….although there is an accompanying video!

This track is all about recognizing that whatever you may believe, the world is changing, with or without you, better to get involved and be a part of the positive than get left behind and be a part of the problem.  Lovely production, gorgeous musicianship, heartfelt messaging, great song!  Looking forward to his album!

San Francisco Zip Code Lookup: Fast and Easy

0

Do you like to send or get letters and parcels?

Then, you should know that it is impossible to receive the delivery in the USA without knowing the right zip code.  Each location is indicated with a special combination of digits.  The postal code was introduced with the aim to make the mail/parcel delivery more effective. Do you live in San Francisco or you want to send a mail to the friend who lives in this city of California? Then, you should remember that you need to define the San Francisco zip code. It’s crucial to indicate the right code. Otherwise, the parcel is unlikely to reach the addressee.  Just imagine how many letters and parcels post offices deliver daily. How can they know what area the recipient of your mail lives?

Have no idea how to make sure that your parcel will be given to the right person? Check the easiest way to get the postal code you need within several seconds and forget about any worries.

What Is the Best Way to Find Out the Postal Code?

Each sender, as well as a recipient, should know that the basic zip code consists of five digits. An extended postal code must contain nine digits. The list of the basic codes consisting of five digits in San Francisco includes codes from 94102 up to 94188. But if you want to be sure that your parcel or mail will reach the addressee, you need to check what code your area. Take into account the specific location. There are many locations in San Francisco and each one is indicated with the special combination of digits.

Before it could take more time to find out what postal code to write on the envelope. Today, thanks to the Internet, it takes less than one minute. Just enter the site with the code lookup and enter all the information you have. Fill in the special field with the address of the recipient if you have it and press “Search”. All the information you have will be useful. So, don’t forget to mention the city, province, and other details of the destination, if you have any.

How to determine the postal code if you don’t know the exact address? Nothing is easier than that with the help of an interactive map. How does it work? The map uses your geolocation. That’s why you need to allow the site to get access to your current location. The map will define the code of the area automatically if there is access to the Internet. You can use this method every time you need to find out the code of some area as well as the code boundaries. Using this kind of map, you can determine the code of any place by clicking on the area on the map. One easy movement will help you to get the relevant information needed for the efficient delivery of letters and parcels.

What to do if you know the zip code and need to get more specific address details? Use a reverse code lookup. If you know the code and want to get the address, then, you can type it and search for the information available according to the postal code you’ve entered. As you can see, everything is as easy as 1,2,3. Write down the full postal code and be sure that the mail/parcel won’t be lost.

Five Proven Instagram Strategies for Branding on Social Media

0

Branding on Social Media is important for building a strong clientele.

As necessary as marketing and gaining a large following is, if the content doesn’t match the brand, having a lot of fans is pointless. The best ways to brand oneself on Instagram are precise. Brands on Instagram and other social media sites should follow specific techniques to ensure they get the recognition they deserve. They should create a profile that embodies their brand and then use these strategies to get followers and loyal customers who will commit to their services.

1.  Utilize Paid Services

Many people don’t like something until they’re told to like it. That’s why trends and popular products are constantly changing. In order to gain followers, Instagrammers should first use paid services to gain followers. This may seem abnormal initially, but it will help different brands gain money in the long run. A great place to find followers on Instagram is through online sites. Visit Instagrowing to discover different buying options for followers. Through this site, Instagram users can order story views, likes, followers, and more. There are many options for increasing one’s brand on Instagrowing.

2.  Use Hashtags

Use useful hashtags, or any hashtags for that matter, to increase brand awareness. Using hashtags that are related to the brand and business. If the business is meant to be branded as a cozy, eco-friendly store, use hashtags that are associated with that brand. Some hashtags for this could be:

  • #ecofriendly
  • #savetheenviroment
  • #savetheturtles
  • #ecoconciousstore
  • #stopclimatechange
  • #hippievibes
  • #hippiestore
  • #zerowaste

Use well-known and viewed hashtags, as well as some more obscure ones. Who knows who is looking through each Instagram tag and when each one of them will start trending. By using a wide array of tags associated with the brand, businesses will find customers and followers that are interested in what they have to say and share. This also helps businesses actually brand themselves to what they want to be or aspire to.

It’s important to also create a specific hashtag for that brand. When others post pictures associated with that brand, they can then use that hashtag to showcase their love of the business. After all, marketing is best spread through word of mouth, and with friends and family. If a brand’s fan posts a picture with their product, their followers may be interested in learning what it is and where they got it.

3.  Posting Schedule

Business owners on Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter, and Facebook can view their analytics and the times in which their posts are most viewed. With this, they can create regular posting schedules. This will help brand that Instagram account. Its followers will become accustomed to their posts and regularly check up on them when they’re meant to post. They’ll come to anticipate that brands post and get excited when they do see them. It helps if these posts include contests or prizes. Then those same followers will engage with said posts, too, and it will help them reach a wider audience. Through Instagram, Instagram users can use the same tool to share their posts on Facebook, too.

Having a posting schedule makes a brand look more serious, but it also saves them time. They can set up posts for weeks and weeks out. This limits the time they have to spend on Instagram so they can be more efficient in other aspects of their brand. Some more benefits to creating a posting schedule can be found here.

4.  Instagram Stories and Facebook Stories

Stories are still relatively new on Instagram and Facebook. They premiered in 2016, yet some don’t even utilize them. A great way to get new viewers and followers is to make Instagram and Facebook stories. People see the stories of the people they follow, but a mutual interest may appear in their story chain, too.

Brands can raise awareness by making these stories unique. If they own a store, they can take their followers on tour. If they have a specific product, they can show them what it is and how it works. For major events, Instagrammers can go live to share exciting news and celebrate with others.

After these stories are shown, they can be saved to the Instagram page under a category title. For a clothing store, they might use categories like “accessories” or “fall fashion.” There are a number of ways to use Instagram stories to make a brand stand out. Here is a list of a few examples for Instagram stories:

  • How To’s
  • Behind the Scenes
  • Deals, Promos, and Events
  • Announcements
  • Posts Associated with the Brand

More information about what these kinds of stories entail can be found here.

5.  Call to Actions

Finally, the last strategy a brand can use is a call to action. A call to action is a marketing technique that requires a response or action. For example, someone on social could say, “like this post if you love your mom.” This is a broad form of a call to action, but it basically makes people say, “hey, I love my mom,” and like the post. A brand can cater this to their company, too. They can use the post to say something along the lines of, “Comment what your favorite product at [brand name] is.” Or, “like if you’re excited for our new release.” These call-to-actions prompt engagement on an Instagram page. Social media users can find tons of great options for call to actions online.

Brands should create their social media profiles to embody who they are and what the vibe they want their brand to have. They should post pictures and videos that relate to their business and what they sell. By using the strategies of buying followers, using hashtags, making a posting schedule, using Instagram stories, and using call-to-actions, they can brand themselves online.

Eric Anders and Mark O’Bitz “American Bardo” Album Release

“American Bardo” is an ode to George Saunders’ exquisite novel, “Lincoln In The Bardo,” the Mann Booker Prize-winning novel about Abraham Lincoln and the death of his young son WIllie.

I reviewed one of the tracks on the album last year, released as a single, “Matterbloomlight,” a gorgeous and haunting song.

This album is much more of the same.  Echoing remembrances, deeply felt and beautifully wrought.  It’s a gorgeous mix of americana, folk, soulful rock and something more, something hard to define musically. But whatever you might call it, the effects of this brilliant, gorgeously and subtly produced music is profound.

The stories in the songs are built around the book,  it seems as if the history of Lincoln and the death of his son had a big impact on Anders and O’Bitz.  As parents, the real understanding that at any moment you might lose a child is a terrifying thing.  My children are grown and I still wake up in a cold sweat some nights.  This music, with all its cinematic weavings and pining chords takes that emotion to a truly intense level, while still leaving a space for hope and love and a sense of some kind of closure or release.

It’s a healing sound, although mournful.  Like a prayer, or a choral piece or the sound of a sunset.  Death is inevitable, sadness consequential and forever.  But can sounds heal us, or reconnect us to who we were before the loss?  Perhaps, when done right and when we are ready to feel something other than emptiness.  How interesting that they chose now to release this album, when we are in the middle of this pandemic, not yet ready ourselves for our collective mourning.  When there are so many more yet to come to be mourned. Are we numb? I know I am.  But sometime soon we are all going to have our individual reckonings and poetry, art and above all music will be what we undoubtably turn to.

“American Bardo” is an exquisite album.  Reminiscent of REM or Neil Young, these two phenomenal musicians give us a record to open our hearts to, when all else seems so lost and we need to feel again. Loved it.

“The Spiritual Side of Solo Theatre”

There is a tremendous amount of outer work that goes into creating a one person play; writing the script, hiring a creative team, assembling your marketing materials, memorizing, staging and performing your solo show, and on and on the to-do list goes.

Yet, we often forget that there is also a lot of inner work that must be done in order to support us along the solo journey.

With that said, in today’s blog I am going to guide you through 3 Spiritual Tools that are sure to improve your solo artistry from the inside out.

1) MEDITATE

“No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.”

                                                                                                               -Taoist Proverb

Perhaps you have experienced the discomfort or foreign feelings that come up for you when you are still. Yet, if you can learn to be with the discomfort of a still and silent moment, it is often in those moments when you are able to become aware of negative or limiting beliefs that are hindering your creative process. Once you become aware, you can begin to replace those harmful thoughts with empowering thoughts.

These moments of stillness and silence are also the moments in which our clearest creative visions can finally emerge in our minds.

As a recovering Queen of the Busy Bees, it has taken me years to learn that without consistent moments of stillness and silence, the busyness quickly becomes pure chaos, and chaos blocks creativity.

Our busy world, busy lives, and busy minds distract us from seeing the creation that is right there in front of us. Michelangelo expressed this very sentiment…

“In every block of marble I see a statue as plain as though it stood before me, shaped and perfect in attitude and action. I have only to hew away the rough walls that imprison the lovely apparition to reveal it to the other eyes as mine see it.”

Your solo story is already within you.

Somewhere deep within, you know exactly what it is you need to say, and exactly how to say it from stage. In other words, your one person play is the “lovely apparition” Michelangelo speaks of that is being imprisoned by the “rough walls” of your various distractions and insecurities.

Isn’t it incredibly comforting to think that your art is already complete? Your assignment is merely learning to get still and silent enough to see the statue in the marble. And let me tell you, that quiet, creative, intuitive Voice will not compete with all of the ‘noise’ fighting for your attention. It will simply wait patiently for you to stop, be still, and listen for it to whisper instruction and encouragement.

Meditation is an incredible device to use in order to achieve this sort of stillness and silence. Meditation is the space in which the mind can empty so that the page can be filled.

Over the years, I have developed my own meditative practice that has helped hundreds of solo artists find the calm they need to create their solo shows.

Please join me and the rest of the Soaring Solo Community for FREE weekly meditation and writing sessions via the link at the end of this blog. Or if you are in the mood to meditate right now, HERE is access to over 80 FREE guided meditations to unleash your solo show on m           y YouTube Channel!

2) BE IN THE PRESENT MOMENT

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

                                                                                                                      -Lao Tzu

Having aided in the Direction and Development of well over 100 solo shows and being a playwright and performer myself, I fully empathize with how daunting the task of creating and performing a one person play can seem.

Because the task is so intimidating, we try to control it. We try to get ahead of it. We project way into the future about all that we need to do, stress over how people will react to our shows, worry over what all of the outcomes will be, and we ultimately psyche ourselves out before a single word has been written. This obviously does not serve your creative process. You must become aware of your racing thoughts and future projections, and see them for what they are; thoughts and projections, and not necessarily your reality.

So, when you start to become aware of yourself getting lost looking ahead hundreds of steps from where you currently are at in your creative process, please remember that the beauty of the creative process is that it is a process.

And a process, according to Merriam Webster dictionary’s definition is-

“A series of actions or operations conducing to an end.”

So, trust the process.

Trust the moment you are in. Trust that one simple action in this moment is enough. If you stay present, all else will reveal itself to you one moment, one action, one step at a time.

Yes, along your solo journey, there are a lot of important creative concepts to ponder, business decisions to make, and plenty of hard work to do, but right now, you do not need to have your story written. You do not need to know all of the performance techniques of solo theatre. You do not have to be an excellent storyteller or character actor or writer yet. All that is asked of you in this present moment is to read this blog. That’s literally what is in front of you to do right now.

Once you step into the now, your heart rate slows down, your racing thoughts find a peaceful rhythm, everything feels much more manageable, and you can enjoy your creative process the way you are meant to.

In this state of beingness, you can actually start to hear the Voice of your own guidance. This Voice will always lead you to the next step, and the next step, and the next step after that. And before you know it, you will look back and you will realize you have taken all of the necessary steps to create a sensational solo show!

So, don’t get ahead of yourself in this process, it will only cause you to trip.

Plus, the awesome thing about staying in the present moment is that it will lead you into your future.

3) PRACTICE SURRENDER

“The ultimate act of power is surrender.”

-Krishna Das

We often mistake being in control with being powerful, yet being a powerful solo artist requires a lot of surrender.

Afterall, there is only so much that you can plan, configure, and orchestrate when it comes to the unbridled nature of creativity.

To a degree, you must allow your creative path to unfold for you and bravely follow your intuition, creativity and imagination as it guides you into unknown territory. Solo artistry is wild, free, transformative, surprising, challenging, and often divinely inspired. Even if you come in with your perfect plan, the solo Muses will usually laugh at your plan, and inspire you with a solo story you never intended to tell.

This is not a bad thing. This is where the magic is. This is where your story is.

This does not mean you do not do all of the work along the way and bring your best self to every moment of this journey. However, it does mean that when your intuition whispers to you to write a particular monologue that feels too revealing, surrender to your intuition and write it anyway. Maybe the monologue won’t make the final edit of your solo show, but perhaps it was a necessary piece to write in order to discover the next part of your story which was the missing piece.

When your gut tells you to play a slew of dynamic characters in your solo show, do not let your limiting beliefs tell you that you cannot play characters. Instead, surrender and write these characters the way they wish to be written. Later on in your process, you can do your due diligence to properly prepare as an actor to learn their posture, their vocal quality, their accent, and all of their other unique nuances.

When you feel led to passionately speak about a taboo topic that is very important to you, do not let fear talk you out of delivering your message. Surrender to the powerful words that want to come out of you and lean into the provocative art your inner guiding system wants you to create.

When your imagination shows you a myriad of amazing technical components to enhance your show, do not immediately judge those ideas as impossible or too expensive. Again, practice surrender, and open yourself up to the possibilities and the exploration of those visions. Trust that finding the right technical team is within your reach.

The point is, stop trying to force your solo show into what you think it needs to become and instead embrace surrender so that your solo show can reveal to you what it already is.

I truly hope that these three Spiritual tools have helped you along your solo journey and please use the resources below to guide you further down your creative path.

Three Days Hiking the Trails in and around Lake Tahoe

After living in California for almost 20 years and never having been to Lake Tahoe, I felt it was finally time to head up to this world class destination.

A small group of us decided to spend 3 days hiking some of the most magnificent trails in the area while staying in a lodge as our home base in South Lake Tahoe. We also got a kayak session in on the lake to add to our adventure weekend.

Here is how you can plan out a hiking and adventure weekend in beautiful Lake Tahoe.

Day One:

After a hearty breakfast head for D.L Bliss State Park to hike the Rubicon Peak Trail, a 10-mile out and back that makes its way to the iconic Emerald Bay. If you are there on a weekend, start your hike early (before 9a) as parking fills up very quick. The trail hugs the vertical hills above the west side of Lake Tahoe, winding along the coastline and affording spectacular views. I would not say it is an easy hike nor would I say it is a strenuous hike, but there are enough ups and downs throughout the trail to make it moderately challenging. Once you are 5 miles in at Emerald Bay it is a good place to stop and eat your packed lunch. There is a campground there with restrooms. Nearby at Emerald Bay is Vikingsholm Castle, a unique mansion built in 1929 that you can explore around too. Hike back the way you came and do not worry, you will never get tired of the spectacular views, they will look just as amazing the 2nd time around. (If you’re in a group with two cars and want to make this a 5-mile and not a 10-mile hike, you could position a car at Emerald Bay parking and just drive back to your other car parked at D.LBliss where you started the trail.).

Day Two:

Your hike today is the Mount Judah Loop near the famed Donner Pass, known as the most significant square mile in California and perhaps the entire Western United States. It is a little ways drive away from Lake Tahoe (about 30 min.), but well worth it for the vistas and for history lovers. The first wagon trains to come to California came over Donner Summit as well as the first transcontinental railroad followed by the first transcontinental highway and telephone line. Charlie Chaplin’s “Gold Rush” silent film was filmed up here. And of course, the sobering story of the Donner family pioneers who got stuck in an early Sierra snowstorm while attempting an overland trip still captivates historians and travelers today to this area.

Parking for this trail is just east of Donner Ski Ranch, turn south from Highway 40 on to Old Donner Summit Road and the trailhead parking lot is a left hand turn about 800 feet down the road. A good section of the 4.6 mile loop trail (1,100 ft. elevation gain) is on the iconic Pacific Crest Trail, which runs all the way from Mexico to Canada passing through the American states of California, Oregon and Washington, so you’ll have some bragging rights that you hiked on some of the PCT. There are really great views from the summit of Mount Judah at 8,000 ft.

Afterwards, you can explore the Gold Rush town of Truckee, which is nearby. It has a vibrant food scene and lots of historical downtown quaint shops

Day Three:

Start your day with some kayaking or paddle boarding on the lake. Mornings are best for this when the water is calmer. There are plenty of locations all around the lake that offer rentals. It is best to reserve ahead of time. Have a water-proof carrier for your phone and/or camera or in most cases the staff will hold it for you in their office while you are on the water.

Finish your Lake Tahoe hiking with a 3-mile hike near Zephyr Cove – the Castle Rock Loop Trail. The hike joins up with and then leaves a portion of the Tahoe Rim trail. You will hike through the forest and then be rewarded with some great views up at this iconic granite peak. You may choose to do some optional rock scrambling at the top if you want too.

As I sat on the beach back in South Lake Tahoe while the sun went down over the lake on our last evening I reflected on how essential good physical and mental health is to keep our immune systems strong. Walking, hiking, and trekking trips, such as the ones I provide for small groups in the great outdoors, can help with that important cause. That’s why I have scheduled many more adventures in the coming months and in 2021, including 4 days trekking on Southern California’s Backbone Trail, 4 days trekking the Trans Catalina Island Trail, Wine and Waterfalls Hiking and Tasting in the Finger Lakes and a Rim-to-Rim Hike in the Grand Canyon (including 2 nights at the historic Phantom Ranch). Please feel free to reach out to me about these programs or any outdoor adventures you would like to be a part of.

The Whitefire Theatre Presents “Judgment Day”

Written and Performed by Juliette Jeffers

Directed by Denise Dowse

Juliette Jeffers plays every role in this very clever and compelling play.

Set in a court, with a judge, jury and prosecutor and defense, the play is an attempt to understand why Black people are always so routinely treated as less than.  By asking the question, “What if God intended this all along and was held accountable?” Juliette morphs from character to character as witness after witness is brought forth by the prosecution and the defense to explain, to illustrate, to narrate, to effectuate, to become their own unique perspective, to literally show us their “why.”   Each of them telling their story of racism, injustice, violence and a highly developed and encouraged self hatred over hundreds of years of subrogation.  The Black slaves who were told over and over again how ugly they were by their capturers creating an evil dysmorphia that still persists. The Black man pulled over for a broken tail light, shot and killed in front of his girlfriend and daughter for no reason, the lessons learned by children born of the rape of slaves who were lighter skinned and treated far better than their darker mothers, creating a deep seated sense of caste of color which has remained and only become more vivid over the centuries.  Story after story, witness after witness, brutality after brutality.

Juliette twists her body and her face and her voice as these stories have so deeply twisted this American culture.

The zeitgeist demands that we face our collective histories, good and bad.  This “Black Voices” streaming festival is a testament to the creative and determined voices of the truth speakers of our world… and speaking truth is surely is the only place to begin when change must come.

It’s a brilliant and terrifying presentation, but one so necessary and so important that we must all pay attention.

Juliette Jeffers utilizes her formidable talent and deep and understandable pain to bring us what truly is the trial of the centuries.  Fusing the fictional and the all to real, reminding us that what erupts on our streets has been 400 years in the making.  To put God on trial is a bold and poignant way to put us all on trial.  Each of us being held accountable for what we do now, in this century, in this lifetime, in this daily trial on our own culpable lives.

If this extraordinary play is very the beginning of the festival I can only imagine where we will journey together over the next few weeks in the capable and urgent hands of the Black Voices artists.

To see what’s coming next you can visit www.whitefiretheatre.com  for their updated calendar and previews of the plays.

Can You Guess These 2 Problems with the Average Household Budget?

0

When you’re looking for a quick fix to all your financial woes, a budget may seem like it has all the answers. Common financial advice suggests the budget is the single best way to take control of your spending and accomplish big goals.

And it’s true, this spending plan has the potential to help you become a better money manager. But it’s not guaranteed to magic away all your problems. You may still struggle with money even with a budget if you make these two mistakes.

You Don’t Factor in the Unexpected

What’s the difference between a budget that’s just alright and one that’s superstar material?

A mediocre budget makes sure you have enough cash on hand to cover your expected bills. It ensures you have what it takes to pay rent, utilities, and groceries.

A fantastic budget does the same thing while also putting aside money in savings to help cover any bills that you don’t expect. Because try all you can to anticipate what comes next, life has a way of throwing you curveballs.

When it does, they tend to be expensive. Car trouble, a trip to the ER, or a household repair can end up putting a dent in your budget.

Without savings, these surprise bills may be too much for you to handle on your own.

If you need help covering unexpected emergency expenses, you may turn to a direct lender installment loan for help. These short term loans act as a safety net when your budget fails to prepare for an unexpected emergency, and they may even be available even if you have bad credit.

Like any cash loan, direct lender installment loans come with unique terms and conditions, so be sure to check them out before you apply. If the benefits of direct lenders for loans outweigh any possible drawbacks, you know you’ve found a possible solution.

Better yet, retool your budget before an unexpected emergency expense puts you in the lurch. Try to set aside a hundred dollars or more into an emergency fund with an eye to save as much as six months’ worth of living expenses.

You Don’t Work in Absolutes

If you don’t like working within the black and white of a budget, you probably fudge the numbers from time to time.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “my rent takes up roughly one-third of my income”?

You’re in for a surprise if that’s a rounded number. If rent is actually 37 percent, that “extra” four percent or so has to come from somewhere — leaving you with less money to spend on utilities and groceries.

What about something like, “I don’t spend too much on takeout?”

If a closer look would reveal you spend 12.5 percent of your budget on pizza and falafel, you may be turning a blind eye to bad spending habits.

Winging your finances like this shows an inaccurate picture of your spending habits that hides the real issues preventing you from paying off bills and saving more money. So, if you rely on rounded numbers or guestimates, start working with real, accurate figures.

Do These Problems Sound Familiar?

Act soon! While these errors may not trip you up right away, they will get you eventually. Before you fall on your face, plan for the unexpected, and start using accurate numbers. These subtle changes can help your budget become a more powerful financial tool today.

As the Census response deadline has shortened to September 30, 2020, Mayor Garcetti is calling on Angelenos to help promote the 2020 Census and increase self-response rates in Los Angeles. Only 56% of Angelenos have responded to the 2020 Census, and we need your help to boost the self response rate to ensure that Los Angeles receives the funding and representation it deserves. Being counted in the Census means equal representation at all levels of government and money for our communities for vital programs and services in education, housing, healthcare, transportation and so much more for the next 10 years. We are asking community members to respond to the Census to make sure everyone gets counted.

NoHo Director’s Blog – The Creative Fire

Well, we resumed filming at the end of August and with the exception of one more day of exteriors, we are just about wrapped for the LA segment of the Ten Films/Ten Countries: A Cinematic Journey film project.

I must say though, that I was pretty nervous coming back from an almost scare. I was also a bit surprised how anxious the crew and the cast were to return to work. We were all a bit more careful and strict with our safety measures; wearing masks, keeping a social distance, not sharing craft or the catering. It was a long and beautiful day of filmmaking because of the hard work and the brilliant talents of the crew and cast. It was also a bit sad, because it was the last day of the shoot for our leading lady and for some of the crew members. The exteriors will be shot with a skeleton crew outside around the neighbourhood and it does not involve any humans within 2 metres of us.

I sat in my office looking at the computer screen as the footage was being uploaded to the editing hard drive and then it occurred to me. I want more. I love the whole process of making films that I don’t want it to stop. Of course I am still not finished with the current project and I am already planning to shoot another film. This phenomenon has also appeared to me while I was on set acting in a film or television show and before I was wrapped. “Where is the next job coming from and when will I work again?” As a director, however, it is a bit different. A script could take months to write and then raising money for the production can take another 6 or more months to raise. Then there is the preproduction organisation, casting, and hiring crew, which may take several weeks. The shooting of the film takes many days and finally, the postproduction could take 6 to 8 weeks. So, the shelf life of one of my films can take over a year from concept to distribution. So, why in the world would I be contemplating the next project when the one I just shot is not even in postproduction?

Let me answer this question with another questions. The creative fire that burns and fuels artistic endeavours are now stoked and must continue to burn. I can not cap this flow of energy, passion, and expression just because one project goes into its final phase, can I? Won’t I run into the same obstacles in the age of Covid-19, that I just encountered? The answer to that question is yes…and no. One thing I have learned over the years of being in this business in front and behind the camera is that, it is all improvisation. No matter how much I plan, discuss, decide, and execute, there will always be an element of guesswork involved. I guess that is what I am addicted to, the art of solving problems, expressing the art inside me, and putting it out to the world. Something from nothing is my mantra.

So, I will be finishing up this latest film and going straight into postproduction. Shortly after that, I am already booked until next autumn on several projects that are in serval stages of creation. All of these I will discuss on the next blog, but if you don’t mind, I have to get back to the uploading of the footage of my latest film. So, until then I will burn the candle at both ends and maybe in the middle as well.

Thanks for All the Dance and LOVE, Movement Lifestyle.

***

After 10 years we say: “See you soon.” Movement Lifestyle is moving on.

Movement Lifestyle. Movement. mL. Our happy place. This mighty NoHo dance studio has provided unique, specialized, professional dance training to thousands of dancers from every part of the planet. They’ve launched careers. They’ve brought new, established and international choreographers to the NoHo Arts District. They’ve developed a stellar work-study program to help dancers discover what they’re best at and how to run a successful dance studio. They’ve created a home for dancers to learn. They’ve made a safe place to meet new, lifelong friends in a city of more than 10 million people.

They’ve been a proud member of our one-square-mile arts district for 10 years and, because of COVID, they must close their doors.

As always, Shaun Evaristo is kind, thinking about the dance community and creatively looking toward the future.

For me and my dancer exchange programs, Movement Lifestyle has been an example of what a dance studio should be. Since 2014 I have had dancers from all over the world take class at mL and learn different styles with new choreographers. I’ve worked with them and the Gentle Ladies to create specialized classes to train my summer dancers. I am grateful for the training and the care they’ve taken with my dancers. But how can any business survive six months with no income and continuing expenses? They can’t. Movement Lifestyle did everything in their power to keep their studio. This is a huge problem. We are the NoHo ARTS District. We are the NoHo DANCE District. And we’ve just lost one of our coveted dance studios.

Our dance studios, theaters and local creative businesses are an economic catalyst. We even explained it in our last dance post.

So my plea to everyone is where your mask. The sooner our numbers drop the faster we can do our rolling opens. We are not messing around. WEAR YOUR MASK!

Here’s a clip from our last dancer showcase at Movement Lifestyle. Thank you for all the memories, sweat, fun and pure joy you have given us.

Mark Vickness Interconnected “Interconnected” Album Release

This music is healing. Pure acoustic heaven in fact.  But there’s a real depth to each track, a soulfulness and clearly a story behind every note.

These truly masterful group of musicians, all staggeringly gifted and from vastly different musical backgrounds, seem born to play together.

Mark Vickness has created something so special and timely.  It’s such a hopeful album, packed with artistry and stirring, deeply personal pieces.  “Interconnected” is not only the title of the album but the driving force it seems, the purpose and the reason.  What better way to perform songs full of power and whimsy, melancholy and heart than with a real sense of togetherness.

We need art as gorgeous as now, this more the ever.   A gathering together of like minded souls, all yearning to be heard and to be a part of our universal healing.  Mercifully Mark Vickness, a virtuoso on his guitar, has gifted us these songs, the videos  show you the group performing live together in the studio, which is absolutely wonderful.

I love this album! A breath of desperately needed grace and sweetness…with a perfect balance of skill and passion…glorious harmony of guitar, cello, viola, bass and tabla.  Brilliant!

Adjusting to Life Financially after a Divorce

There’s no doubt about it — going through a divorce can be an emotionally trying time. Ironing out a divorce settlement, attending various court hearings, and dealing with competing attorneys can all weigh heavily on the parties involved.

In addition to the emotional impact a divorce can have, it’s important to be aware of how your financial position will be impacted. Now, more than ever, you need to make sure that your finances are on the right track. You will then be able to put the past behind you and set in place the building blocks that can be the foundation for your new financial future.

Assess your current financial situation

Following a divorce, you’ll need to get a handle on your finances and assess your current financial situation, taking into account the likely loss of your former spouse’s income. In addition, you may now be responsible for paying for expenses that you were once able to share with your former spouse, such as housing, utilities, and car loans. Ultimately, you may come to the realization that you’re no longer able to live the lifestyle you were accustomed to before your divorce.

Establish a budget

A good place to start is to establish a budget that reflects your current monthly income and expenses. In addition to your regular salary and wages, be sure to include other types of income, such as dividends and interest. If you will be receiving alimony and/or child support, you’ll want to include those payments as well.

As for expenses, you’ll want to focus on dividing them into two categories: fixed and discretionary. Fixed expenses include things like housing, food, and transportation. Discretionary expenses include things like entertainment, vacations, etc. Keep in mind that you may need to cut back on some of your discretionary expenses until you adjust to living on less income. However, it’s important not to deprive yourself entirely of any enjoyment. You’ll want to build the occasional reward (for example, yoga class, dinner with friends) into your budget.

Reevaluate/reprioritize your financial goals

Your next step should be to reevaluate your financial goals. While you were married, you may have set certain financial goals with your spouse. Now that you are on your own, these goals may have changed. Start out by making a list of the things that you now would like to achieve. Do you need to put more money towards retirement? Are you interested in going back to school? Would you like to save for a new home?

You’ll want to be sure to reprioritize your financial goals as well. You and your spouse may have planned on buying a vacation home at the beach. After your divorce, however, you may find that other goals may become more important (for example, making sure your cash reserve is adequately funded).

Take control of your debt

While you’re adjusting to your new budget, be sure that you take control of your debt and credit. You should try to avoid the temptation to rely on credit cards to provide extras. And if you do have debt, try to put a plan in place to pay it off as quickly as possible. The following are some tips to help you pay off your debt:

Keep track of balances and interest rates

  • Develop a plan to manage payments and avoid late fees
  • Pay off high-interest debt first
  • Take advantage of debt consolidation/refinancing options

Protect/establish credit

Since divorce can have a negative impact on your credit rating, consider taking steps to try to protect your credit record and/or establish credit in your own name. A positive credit history is important since it will allow you to obtain credit when you need it, and at a lower interest rate. Good credit is even sometimes viewed by employers as a prerequisite for employment.

Review your credit report and check it for any inaccuracies. Are there joint accounts that have been closed or refinanced? Are there any names on the report that need to be changed? You’re entitled to a free copy of your credit report once a year from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. You can go to annualcreditreport.com for more information.

To establish a good track record with creditors, be sure to make your monthly bill payments on time and try to avoid having too many credit inquiries on your report. Such inquiries are made every time you apply for new credit cards.

Review your insurance needs

Typically, insurance coverage for one or both spouses is negotiated as part of a divorce settlement. However, you may have additional insurance needs that go beyond that which you were able to obtain through your divorce settlement.

When it comes to health insurance, make having adequate coverage a priority. Unless your divorce settlement requires your spouse to provide you with health coverage, one option is to obtain temporary health insurance coverage (up to 36 months) through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). You can also look into purchasing individual coverage or, if you’re employed, coverage through your employer.

Now that you’re on your own, you’ll also want to make sure that your disability income and life insurance coverage matches your current needs. This is especially true if you are reentering the workforce or if you’re the custodial parent of your children.

Finally, make sure that your property insurance coverage is updated. Any applicable property insurance policies may need to be modified or rewritten in order to reflect property ownership changes that may have resulted from your divorce.

Change your beneficiary designations

After a divorce, you’ll want to change the beneficiary designations on any life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and bank or credit union accounts you may have in place. Keep in mind that a divorce settlement may require you to keep a former spouse as a beneficiary on a policy, in which case you cannot change the beneficiary designation.

This is also a good time to make a will or update your existing one to reflect your new status. Make sure that your former spouse isn’t still named as a personal representative, successor trustee, beneficiary, or holder of a power of attorney in any of your estate planning documents.

Consider tax implications

You’ll also need to consider the tax implications of your divorce. Your sources of income, filing status, and the credits and/or deductions for which you qualify may all be affected.

In addition to your regular salary and wages, you may have new sources of income after your divorce, such as alimony and/or child support.

Your tax filing status will also change. Filing status is determined as of the last day of the tax year (December 31). This means that even if you were divorced on December 31, you would, for tax purposes, be considered divorced for that entire year.

Finally, if you have children, and depending on whether you are the custodial parent, you may be eligible to claim certain credits and deductions. These could include the child tax credit, and the credit for child and dependent care expenses, along with college-related tax credits and deductions. Ask a tax professional for information on your individual situation.

Consult a financial professional

Although it can certainly be done on your own, you may want to consider consulting a financial professional to assist you in adjusting to your new financial life. In addition to helping you assess your needs, a financial professional can work with you to develop a plan designed to help you address your financial goals, make recommendations about specific products and services, and monitor and adjust your plan as needed.

The cost and availability of an individual health insurance policy can depend on factors such as age, location, and the type of insurance plan purchased.

The cost and availability of life insurance depend on factors such as age, health, and the type and amount of insurance purchased.

Disability income insurance premiums are based on factors such as your age, gender, occupation, and the amount of potential lost income you are trying to protect, as well as the specifics of the policy and any benefits added.

What Exactly Are the Mechanics of a Jackpot Casino Game?

0

jackpot.jpg

We’ve all seen scenes of people winning big jackpots at casinos in movies and tv shows. Indeed, big jackpot wins on slots in places like Las Vegas often make the news.

But how do the prizes in those game actually work? And, is there a realistic chance of winning one? Answering the first question, in a sense, provides an answer for the second. And, when we break it all down, it might surprise you as to how the mechanics of a game determine a jackpot winner.

To start, let’s look at what a jackpot game is at a fundamental level. If you pay a typical slot machine, it will run on an RNG (random number generator). Nobody, including the operators of the casino, will know how and when that game is going to pay, so you should ignore the myths and conspiracy theories about special hot and cold buttons a sneaky casino owner can use.

What that RNG will do is set parameters for the game, and that means how much it will pay back over time. The figure is called the RTP (return to player), which is a bit like a guaranteed house edge in reverse. So, for example, a typical slot machine might have an RTP of 96%, meaning that the casino will make a 4% profit over time (recorded over millions of spins).

Jackpot prizes funded by players

With a jackpot slot, such as Great Blue jackpot @Mansion Casino in Canada, it will be a little different. The RTP might be 96.03% officially, but another approximately 1% of that might be paid into the progressive jackpot. In short, 1% of each spin will be paid into a jackpot fund, which will grow and grow until one player is awarded the prize. How is that winner determined? It goes back to the RNG. It will take a random figure – let’s say $1,983,938.17 – and the spin that pushes the jackpot to that amount will win the prize. Once again, the casino operator will not know that figure as it is picked at random (within certain parameters).

great-blue-jackpot.png

Now that we know the mechanics of how a prize is funded, we can determine how likely it is to win a progressive jackpot. Consider if the average stake for each spin is $1, meaning a cent is paid into the jackpot prize each time a player plays. That means it will take 100,000,000 spins to grow the prize by one million dollars. So, you can gather that it’s quite the long shot for your spin to be the lucky one.

Games favour high-stakes

But if we go back to that point about 1% of each spin paying into the fund, it follows that high stakes players will be paying more into the fund. For instance, compare a player playing $0.50 spins to someone playing $50 spins. The former will be paying half a cent into the jackpot fund for each spin, whereas the latter will be paying in 50 cents. It sounds like a small margin, but it means that the high stakes player (in this scenario) is 100 times more likely to win the jackpot than the guy playing low stakes.

As you can see by the numbers, it’s best to treat playing the games with the same respect you would buying a lottery ticket. There are, of course, other ways to win in the games, and some modern non-jackpot slots are programmed to offer massive prizes regardless. Above all, while it’s nice to dream of that big jackpot, it’s always much more fun if you play responsibly.

6 Simple Ways to Save Money on Groceries

0

Food is our basic necessity. The bigger the family- the more it costs. Luckily, there are many ways to buy groceries for less. Discover six tips from shopping experts. These methods are guaranteed to work.

1. Check Weekly Ads

Digital weekly flyers are the best source of deals. Of course, you can subscribe to newsletters from your local stores. However, a better way is to check Rabato weekly ads with flyers from major retailers. This way, you can access all offers from a single platform. This service is available in many countries, including the US.

Check current flyers and coupons, and add discounted items to your shopping list. The system connects you to the official store catalogs, so you can place orders directly. Compare deals from different retailers to save more.

2. Go Shopping Early

Visit your store early to get the freshest produce. In addition, you can snatch discounted items while the supplies last. There is no denying – early morning hours are the best time to go shopping. This is one of the keys to smart shopping at Walmart.

Night owls can also go late at night, as stores are less crowded. Never go shopping on Friday or Saturday – these days are the worst. Many experts recommend visiting grocery stores on Wednesdays. In many chains, old deals are still available while new ones are starting.

3. Install Shopping Apps

Some shopping apps generate grocery lists. They may also allow several users to edit the same file. For example, try AnyList. It categorizes items by the department and provides suggestions.

Other apps bring rewards for scanned receipts. For example, Fetch App lets you collect bonus points. These can be exchanged for gift cards accepted at Amazon, Walmart, and other stores. Every receipt uploaded to the Receipt Hog app brings coins. These can also be turned into gift cards. Coins are also received for sign-up, using a code, and other actions.

4. Do a Pantry Check

Check your available supplies before buying more. Think of ways to incorporate them into meals. This way, you will only need additional ingredients. Your pantry should be the starting point for planning. Check expiry dates and avoid waste.

5. Be Flexible

The importance of planning does not mean you cannot change your menu. What if the key ingredient is suddenly out of stock? Be flexible and look for affordable alternatives. The Internet has a wealth of recipes for every situation.

6. Cash Beats Credit Cards

Banks offer attractive conditions to the holders of credit cards. However, you will still be using borrowed money. Do not be fooled by rewards or cashback – borrowing is never free. It is much wiser to shop with a debit card, or use cash.

On the other hand, cash helps to avoid overspending. Use human psychology to your advantage. Everyone finds it harder to part with physical money, rather than swipe their card.

receipts.jpg

The Envelope Method

Finally, you may also use the envelope method to spend wisely. Determine your monthly budget for groceries and keep this amount in an envelope. This system is old, but it has recently been revived by Dave Ramsey. The method is not limited to groceries – use it for other expenses as well.

It is easy to check how much is left in the envelope. You can adjust your spending to stay within budget. Some personal finance apps allow you to do the same, but they connect to bank accounts.

Books for the Lockdown – ”José Ferrer: Success and Survival (Hollywood Legends Series)”

Mike Peros has been the film critic at NoHoArtsDistrict.com for many years.  So many in fact that we can’t even remember clearly how it happened, but what we do remember and are eternally grateful for, is Mike’s genuine love for film.

So it’s only natural I suppose that when he wrote his second book, ”José Ferrer: Success and Survival (Hollywood Legends Series),” it would be about someone he admired deeply who worked in the medium he loves.  Jose Ferrer is a fascinating man to write about and as Mike researched him he uncovered much more than even he was prepared for.  José Ferrer became the first Puerto Rican actor to win the Best Actor Academy Award for the 1950 film version of Cyrano de Bergerac. His iconic portrayal of the lovelorn poet/swordsman had already won him the Tony in 1947, and he would be identified with Cyrano for the rest of his life.  Ferrer maintained his pride in his Puerto Rican heritage, donating his Oscar to the University of Puerto Rico while championing the work of Latino poets and playwrights. He continuously evolved, striving to remain relevant, stretching his talents (including cabaret, operas, musicals, and yes, ballet!), and writing the occasional guest column for major newspapers. Ferrer’s life is an American success story and a testament to reinvention and resilience.

Mike Peros’ book is available through amazon (buy)…there is little that isn’t these days, so please go and purchase a copy. In the meantime, I asked Mike a few questions about it…remotely of course!!!

Here’s Mike…in his own words.

So you asked why Ferrer:  After l finished “DAN DURYEA: HEEL WITH A HEART,” there were several items I considered before my next subject. Was there a book on the person already and was this a person I wanted to spend a lot of time with? I have always been a Ferrer fan, there (surprisingly) had been no previous biography, and I knew he led a pretty colorful life. My publisher and editor at University Press of Mississippi agreed, so I was back in the bio business.

How long…and the process:  From beginning to end (as in submitting final edit along with photos) it took a little over three years. When you’re doing research on a film/television actor, you have to watch the actor’s performances, find printed or online material not only on the works themselves, but also about the person behind the screen persona. I was lucky with Ferrer: Boston University had a collection of his papers, plus there was much material at USC Cinema Arts Library and Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library. Also I was able to connect with Monsita, Maria, and Rafael, three of his children by Rosemary Clooney (his eldest Miguel passed away around when I began my research.) They were very helpful and supportive. They love their dad and saw I was creating a balanced portrait of their father. Of course, once you do the research you have to write the darn thing and then rewrite it and revise it ( especially if you discover things along the way). It helps to have a good editor and I did!

How did I manage my time? I would do the heavy part of my research during the summer at USC, Margaret Herrick etc. During the school year I would reserve one or two hours most afternoons (after my school work) to organize and keep track of my notes, write and revise. The school’s computer monitors are much bigger than my home screen, so I did much of the writing at school.  (At my age, bigger is better!)

Advice?  I can only tell you what works for me. You need to be passionate about what you’re doing, in whatever literary form you’re working with. Try to please yourself but also be honest with yourself. If a certain approach isn’t working try another. And it doesn’t hurt to walk away a little and return with a fresher pair of eyes. And with that first draft, write it all, the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s always easier to get rid of things than to find things to add.

Next project? Don’t know yet since my full time gig is a teacher and this year is gearing up to be challenging. It will be someone who hasn’t got his due yet that I can promise.

Mike is our regular film critic, although lately, that has been a bit difficult, to say the least!! He has explored TV, Netflix and HBO as well as pulled together some favorite film articles.  Thanks to Mike we know what to watch and what to skip. With so much content and only so much time, even during the lock downs, his is a familiar and graceful voice, guiding us through it all.  Let’s hope that someday soon we will all be back in our seats at the local movie theatre, clutching our popcorn and bracing for the latest thrills.  For now…there is his wonderful book on one of Hollywood’s unsung heroes, Jose Ferrer.

You can find the book online:

The Whitefire Theatre Streamfest Presents: “GERONIMO, Life on the Reservation”

Written by Janelle Meraz Hooper

Directed by Steve Railsback

Performed by Rudy Ramos

“Geronimo” is a long form narrative monologue.  A history lesson and a masterful storytellers vivid recollection of his own life.

Rudy Ramos as Geronimo is spellbinding.  He seems to channel this truly great and fascinating man as he walks us through the pain and the persecution, the triumphs and the interminable resilience of an icon.

We have all heard of Geronimo of course, through films and books and TV shows, but the real story of Geronimo and his people is almost too much to bear witness to.  Which is why of course we must.  This beautifully written play is a glimpse into his life, as he recollects the deaths of his first family at the hands of the Mexican army and his years on various reservations, as a prisoner of war and his fierce survival in the face of overwhelming odds.

It’s a story that seems all the more relevant given the current condition of our country.  A native man torn from his life and brutalized into submission, all the while maintaining his dignity through his sheer force of will and his innate sense to remain absolutely himself.  As a play it’s simple and elegant, with a stillness and a profound sense of strength and grace, with the help of projected images and Apache songs to keep us held in the spell of the moment.

We follow Geronimo’s journey from his freedom as a young man, all the way though to his days performing in Wild West shows. It’s a cautionary tale, full of sadness and hope and courage and one that should be absolutely compulsory at every school in every state in this nation.  All countries have their shame, some more than others, but hidden that wide swath of our national shame are the stories of men and none more important that Geronimo’s. His last words were reported to be said to his nephew, “I should have never surrendered. I should have fought until I was the last man alive.”

Reason enough to listen to his own words so brilliantly and purposefully crafted together in this play.  A fitting end to the Whitefire Theatres 2020 Streamfest.

Netflix Documentaries You Need to Watch Now

netflix.jpg

Undoubtedly, Netflix has changed the way we consume entertainment. As the leading streaming service provider, Netflix has been far ahead of its competition from the very beginning, partly because of its ingenuity, but also by creating top-class content for its viewers.

Moreover, Netflix should also get credit for popularising documentaries. A form of cinema that till recently only appealed to a niche audience; documentaries are now viewed by millions of people. Making a Murderer was the very first Netflix documentary that captivated audiences around the world. Soon enough, the service was chock-a-block full of interesting and engrossing documentaries that cover different aspects of human life. We look at a few Netflix documentaries that should be on your must-watch list.

Street Food

While the world is going crazy over gourmet food, a whole different section of gourmands is drooling over street food that is authentic, flavourful, and also cheaper on the pockets. Street Food Asia and the recently released Street Food Latin America takes us deep into the culinary cultures of the most prominent foodie cities in the world. Here, viewers get to feast with their eyes as they watch locals prepare mouth-watering specialities that have shot them to worldwide fame. From Delhi and Bangkok to Lima and Salvador, there is so much good food all around that you have to make sure not to watch this documentary on an empty stomach.

unsolved-mysteries.jpg

Unsolved Mysteries

One place where Netflix truly succeeds is in crime and mystery documentaries. The company has produced a few hauntingly intriguing crime docuseries over the years, with Tiger King and the ongoing drama between Carole Baskin and Joe Exotic taking centre stage amongst audiences and the news recently. Another addition to their lineup is Unsolved Mysteries, an episodic series that consist of different unsolved cases from around the world, but primarily America. From UFO sightings to unusual deaths and horrific murders, Unsolved Mysteries is morbidly fascinating and a must-watch.

High Score

The essential Netflix documentary for gamers, High Score is a trip back to the time when videogames were just starting to become famous. The six-part docuseries is an in-depth look at the history of video gaming and what led to its popularity over time. Featuring interviews with game creators and a look at fans consumed by the virtual world, High Score will leave you feeling nostalgic and with a desire to take out your dusty old Nintendo for a round of retro gaming.

Fyre

A cautionary tale and reminder that sometimes the very best of ideas can go belly-up in minutes, Fyre is about one of the most controversial island parties that never took place. The documentary takes a look at the people behind the debacle, who might or might not have had the right intentions in the first place as they went about promoting a once-in-a-lifetime event. Viewers also get to know what happened when hundreds of party-goers landed on an island ill-prepared to host the festival they paid for. The documentary raises questions on the authenticity of our growing influencer culture while providing a thought-provoking and entertaining viewing experience.

Re-discovering & Re-visiting an iconic & classic song: TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART

Written by Jim Steinman & performed by Bonnie Tyler w/background vocals by Rory Dodd

THE PLAYERS: JIM STEINMAN, BONNIE TYLER, RORY DODD

In 1983, songwriter Jim Steinman had two songs on Billboard’s HOT 100 at Number’s #1 & #2: # 1 being “Total Eclipse of The Heart” by Bonnie Tyler & # 2 “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” by Air Supply.

Jim Steinman also wrote the tracks to Meat Loaf’s mega-hit album “Bat Out of Hell” and the Celine Dion anthem “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now.”

That’s lots of star power! Let’s start from the beginning…

If you remember the music of the 1980s, then you know what a unique, creative and boundary-breaking time it was.

Dance clubs were the public’s second Home and the ‘invent’ of MTV changed music overnight across the planet.

Now, let’s rewind time a tad bit more… enter Bonnie Tyler. She was born Gaynor Hopkins on June 5, 1951, in the small Wales town of Skewen, in the United Kingdom.

She had tremendous success in America with her hit “It’s a Heartache,” released in 1978. The single was a crossover success on both Billboard’s Country and Pop charts.

In early 1980, Bonnie wanted to venture more into Pop and Rock, so she moved to CBS Records and set up a collaboration with music producer and songwriter Jim Steinman. It would be the perfect dream team and would make music history.

Mr. Steinman wrote and produced her most successful hit and album“Totally Eclipse of The Heart” and “Faster Than The Speed of Night.” (Both Billboard #1)

The single would earn Bonnie a 1984 Grammy Nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance/Female.

Irene Cara won for“Flashdance… What A Feeling!”

As mentioned, Jim & Bonnie’s collaboration was music gold.

In 1984, he wrote and produced Bonnie’s global hit “Holding Out For a Hero,” which was included on the motion picture soundtrack, “Footloose”; Academy Award Winner & Golden Globe Award Winner, Dean Pitchford, also contributed to the song’s lyrics.

“TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART” Backup Vocalist Rory Dodd

Let’s talk about Rory Dodd.

Remember that name: RORY DODD

And, take a bow, Dude!!

If it wasn’t for Rory, many music critics don’t believe Total Eclipse would be the classic hit that it is today.

A Rocker from Port Dover, Ontario, Canada, who lent his smooth falsetto voice to duet with Ms. Tyler.

With haunting fluidity and ease, he repeats “… turn around bright eyes…”

Rory was Mr. Steinman’s favorite Backup Singer and his number one pick to record with Meatloaf on“Bat Out of Hell.”

The rest is history.

{youtube}lcOxhH8N3Bo{/youtube}

*****

A word from Waide Riddle…

“TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART” came out when I was still living in Houston. I was 20 and I remember it being a huge global smash.

Critiqued and dissected by DJs, music teachers, music historians, music educators and universities from across the country.

The University of Texas at Austin even created a class around the song to examine Pop Culture.

DRAG & QUEENS!

One Sunday night in 1983, I went to the gay dance club The Copa, in Houston, at the intersection of Richmond & Kirby. Sunday Night was drag night and I was all about the drag scene in the early 80s.

The show was known as the Fantastic 4: Hot Chocolate, Donna Day, Naomi Sims & Tasha Kohl. These Ladies/Artists ruled the Drag World.

To make it perfectly clear, Drag in the 80s was an ultra-serious business, at least in Texas. It was Art. It was convincing. It was theatrical. It took the audience on an unforgettable journey.

That specific night Tasha Kohl performed Total Eclipse.

Instead of doing a typical camp drag number, Ms. Kohl, went for the jugular; with drama and story. Entering center stage with a single white hot spotlight. Walls of fog wafting and cascading in the background and surrounding her as wind gently blew her long exaggerated white-blonde main; remember the music video? During the emotional turmoil of the song, Tasha summoned real tears, and she slowly wept, mascara running, and in the end, the audience jumped to its feet and went insane with a standing ovation, which lasted several minutes!

*****

UNFORGETABLE COVERS.

Since the release of the song, there have been a select-few of great and well-executed covers. Namely two:

1) Nicki French’s 1995 global Pop smash, which went to the TOP of Billboard’s Dance & Pop Charts in North America and the UK.

2) The second is an unexpected, pleasant and rare gem. An arrangement and cover by Broadway sensation and film and television actor Jeremy Jordan. Mr. Jordan re-invents it to make it his own, from a man’s point-of-view. It is fluid and works handsomely!

*****

GOD BLESS THE DJs!!

To cap off this story, I wanted to mention unique DJs that celebrate music and keep YOU dancing on the dance floors.

Unfortunately, because of COVID-19/Coronavirus, the world has been turned upside down. And, not in a good way.

Our precious and loved DJ community has been devastated and decimated, and is suffering a huge blow.

They, too, have bills to pay and keep their livelihoods together. With bars and clubs closed, the dance floors are too. The DJs are out of work.

Please, remember them! Take time to get to know them. Take time to understand their important role in your happiness. Let them know you care.

As Madonna sings in her classic song: “MUSIC makes the people come together.”

It’s so true! Imagine a club without a DJ… What a boring world it would be…

“I started spinning in 1981. I’ve always been a Bonnie Tyler fan since I was a kid. My first introduction to Total Eclipse of The Heart was seeing the music video debut on MTV in 1983. While I was a club DJ at the moment, I was more into upbeat dance music, and wasn’t listening to too many ballad songs. However, the melody in Total Eclipse did catch my attention and the song grew on me over the next few months. I remember watching the music video and being mesmerized by the guys with headlight eyes.”

DJ Bruce Godwin: Resident DJ & Business Owner in Houston.

Mr. Godwin has been a critical mover and shaker in the Houston music & dance scene for over 42 years. DJ & Owner of the iconic and historic Houston dance club NUMBERS!

Owner of the iconic and historic RECORD RACK. One of the few vinyl record stores in the 1980s to supply international imports to DJs.

IN HIS OWN WORDS, BRUCE GODWIN & “TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART”

Waide Riddle– On a critical level, why do you think this song has had such longevity and made the impact that it has on Pop Culture & music in general?

Bruce Godwin– Well, the song has a great story and hook, along with Bonnie Tyler’s smoky vocals and great delivery. After you hear it a couple of times it just sticks in your head.

WR– What moved you about the song originally? Did you think it was going to be a hit?

BG– I knew it was gonna be huge immediately. Jim Steinman is a great songwriter and producer, so it was a no brainer. He had already sold 50 million albums with Meatloaf’s  Bat out of Hell as songwriter and producer. Bonnie Tyler was virtually unknown in the USA. It did not matter, anybody who heard the song could immediately sing along. Always the mark of a for sure hit!

WR– You are a survivor. You owned the historic Record Rack in Houston when vinyl ruled everything. You were a club DJ for the historic Numbers dance club. Tell us about your career as a DJ & entrepreneur. And, what made you decide to leave the industry?

BG– I guess I was in the right place at the right time. I could always tell a hit. “Ears” as they call it. My shop, the Record Rack had been open since 1957 so everyone knew it. I just started working there at the height of Disco in 1978. The shop sold all kinds of music, but we instantly knew 12 Remix singles were gonna be huge! We sold them by the thousands. 45’s, LP’s, 12″ singles,  Eight Tracks, Cassettes, and eventually CD’s.

The shop also was a direct importer from the UK and Europe. If the record came out in the UK, we paid to air freight it to Houston within a week. So we had the same records that were chart hits overseas months or years before they became hits in the USA.

It didn’t hurt that I was also the DJ for Numbers Nightclub during the 80’s and introduced “New Wave” night when Disco was still popular, but was on the wane.

Oddly I walked into the Record Rack and asked for a job, within 4 years I bought the shop.

Same thing with Numbers… they hired me to be a DJ one night a week. It was extremely successful. That led to New Wave night expanding to every night. I also promoted and sold tickets at my shop for thousands of concerts. We had everyone from Grace Jones, The Village People, Divine, Sylvester to Siouxsie and the Banshees, REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cure, The Cult, on to John Mayer, Bjork, NIN, Ministry, Melissa Etheridge, Snoop Dogg. You name it, we had them in concert. We were not slaves to one Genre, but just cool bands and great music.

Visit www.numbersnightclub.com if you want to see a history of all the bands and concerts. Still going today after 42 years! On pause for Covid at the moment.

Within 6 years I purchased the Club, along with Robert Burtenshaw (DJ Robot).

WR– You were quite the music critic in the 1980s. Where do you think music is going today?

BG– Music today is terrible. Yes, I am old and jaded. Longing for the good old days. There are some good pop songs out there, but almost everything is ‘one hit wonders.’ Nobody has long careers anymore. Music is also a background item taking a back seat to the internet, Facebook, Snapchat, etc. Younger people don’t sit down and listen to an entire Album. That is out of the question! Music up to the 90’s was at least an artistic endeavor. Meant to produce not only 1 good song, but an entire album of good songs.

So, yes Felicia, the internet did kill the music business as we knew it. It was the death of most record stores around the World. Including mine.

His skills in Country-Western Dance Movement are highly sought after and have put him in the forefront in Country Dancing and have won him Special Guest DJ & Line Dance Educator at the annual Sundance Stompede, presented by the Sundance Association for Country-Western Dancing in San Francisco.

Waide Riddle– What moved you about this song originally? Why did it grab you?

Rick Dominguez– I was just out of high school and getting ready to make my crazy move to L.A. when this gem was released. I felt an immediate connection; love at first sound to the song, it was just so melodic and dark. Then there’s her soaring voice with that scratchy tone that sets the heartbreak in the lyrics apart like no other artist of her time. I couldn’t get enough of this song! I wore out my 45 records grooves listening to it constantly. Watching MTV every night after my job till 4am, just to catch this, and all my favorite music videos, was pure gold to me back then. Then came my move… this song became one of my go to-s whenever I wanted to think about my hometown. It would come on the radio and I’d be right back in my living room with my midnight snack, curled in front of the tube watching the strange yet haunting video of “Total Eclipse Of the Heart.”

WR– On a critical level, why do you think this song has had such longevity and made the impact that it has on Pop Culture & music in general?

RD- Back then, the 80s, and even earlier, generations only had one style of Pop music… sure, there was Rock, Country and Disco, but as far as radio, Pop music was the cornerstone of the pop culture. Music we listened to influenced all our lives, from fashion, to our social groups of friends, and even our work at times. Certain songs stood out and became classics because of the impact it had on so many of us, with “Eclipse,” it was one of the biggest rock operas of that era. Jim Steinman was a musical genius, and hit the mark right on the beast’s head with this one. Nothing quite like this had hit radio since Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and the world was ready for it.

As a club DJ, the song caught the next generation by storm as well, as Nicki French’s rendition took “Total Eclipse” to the dance floors in 94-95. I was working at a club in Buena Park called Ozz and this song packed my dance floor for nearly a year; also having great Pop success hitting #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100. So, for a solid 20 years this classic touched the heartstrings of 2 generations, keeping it very secure on being one of the greatest Pop/Rock/Dance songs in our country’s music catalog history!

Michael Crane  North Hollywood/Los Angeles: USC Doctorate Of Music/Music Professor/Piano Teacher & Coach/Award-Winning Film & Television Composer.

Waide Riddle– On a critical level, Michael, why do you think this song has had such longevity and made the impact that it has on Pop Culture & music in general?

Michael Crane– Because, it is the quintessential encapsulation and culmination of several music trends that were going on in Pop music at the time. And, things that do that tend to be remembered. Music production as a distinct element of Pop music had been gaining autonomy for years to the point where something could be considered “overproduced.” The heavy metal power ballad was something that came about in the 70s, and by the 80s, had become something of a vehicle for excess in production, theatricality and grandiosity in general. Just think of all the hair-metal bands of that era. Jim Steinman had been producing tracks for Meatloaf for a while before he produced this track. And you can hear the similarities instantly in the symphonic, piano-based instrumentation (which would not exist without Elton John and Queen) and in the stratospheric pathos of the vocal delivery. I think this song stands out as perhaps Steinman‘s best known song because of Bonnie Tyler’s utterly unique voice; combines with all the factors mentioned above.

WR– What moved you about the song originally? Did you think it was going to be a hit?

MC– As a kid who was more into classical music than pop music at the time, I found it to be musically very satisfying. The emotional range was just huge, symphonic! That beautiful “goodbye yellow brick road” style piano combined with thunder crashes, pipe organ… I think there are sleigh bells at one point! Plus, a massive choir! And, her voice goes from lyrical and pleading, to screaming like she’s bringing about some kind of emotional Armageddon. I also thought the video was the creepiest and most magnificent things I had ever seen, with the “Village of The Damned” boys in choir robes flying around. Inspired madness!

WR– You are an accomplished musician. You have a Doctorate Of Music from USC. You’re an award-winning film and TV composer. A music educator and a respected piano teacher & coach. Now, where do you see music going today?

MC– These days you can’t really distinguish between music and production. Especially if you’re talking about Pop music, and to some extent, in film music, too. Computers have become an essential part of the process. In some cases the human factor has almost been eradicated all together. You’ve just got people manipulating software. There are actually computer programs that can write film scores now. Having said that, I think more traditional music, in terms of technique and content, will never go away. But, it may find itself tending towards obsolescence, as its audience becomes smaller and smaller, and older, particularly in this country.

Of course, genuine musical creativity does still exist. It’s just not always the most commercially visible. And, even the processes mentioned above, despite their tendency towards artificiality, can be a viable creative medium.  You sometimes just have to look a little harder for it. EDM, or Electronic Dance Music, and Hip Hop aren’t really my thing, but I see the creativity that goes into it. And, I can appreciate it on that level at least.

It’s hard to say where all of this will end up. The curse and blessing with music has always been that there’s just too damn much of it. As technology has made it easier and easier to produce music, and the internet making it easier and easier to promote it, I can only see this continuing… Oh… and, I’d love to see the Jim Steinmanesque Power Ballad make a comeback.

Randy Brenner / Valley Village/Los Angeles. Award-winning actor, writer, producer & director. Multiple On & Off-Broadway Productions.  WINNER! GLAAD MEDIA AWARD & NEW YORK OUTER CRITICS AWARD NOMINEE.

Waide Riddle– What moved you about this song originally? Why did it grab you?

Randy Brenner– At first, the soaring musicality of the song and the ripping vocals.  It definitely has one of those melodies that is “catchy.“ Like other songs of this genre, its sweeping in scope. Are we really sure what the lyrics mean, or are they literally how we interpret them? It’s a great rock ballad.! A Classic!

WR– On a critical level, why do you think this song has had such longevity and impact on Pop Culture & music in general?

RB– It has a hook that everyone will remember immediately and, beyond that, any time I hear the words “Turn Around…” sung, I immediately know which song is being referenced.

The music video is so campy and fun with a style that heavily encapsulates the style of 80s films.  From the costumes, to the sets, and crazy unconnected storyline, it’s like a little slice of the 80s. The vocal is very strong and it’s fun to try to sing.  It’s a powerful ballad that kind of feels like an uptempo song as well. The combination of music video with song has also spawned parody versions that keep the memory of the song alive and allow the piece to not only be a fun homage to the time period, but also a song that didn’t take itself so seriously. Or, maybe it did, and that’s why it’s great.

Waide Riddle– On a critical level, Bubba, why do you think this song has had such longevity and made the impact that it has on Pop Culture & music in general?

Bubba Mcneely– When I first heard this song, it was Tasha Kohl performing it at The Copa in Houston.  The lyrics, her powerful raspy voice, which was similar to my raspy voice, intrigued me.  Listening to: “Turn Around… Forever’s Gonna Start Tonight…Once I was falling in love…. Now, I’m only falling apart…. Total Eclipse of The Heart…” An intense, passionate relationship can be toxic, even destructive, but, you can be torn… should I be alone or hang in there and try to make this work?  POWERFUL!!!

WR– What moved you about the song originally? Did you think it was going to be a hit?

BM– When you have lyrics and melody that moves you deep down in your soul, which this song did to me, it’s always relevant.  Every time you hear it…. you flash back to when you heard it…. where you were… your circumstance, and that CEMENTS IT INTO POP CULTURE FOREVER!!!!!  And, Bonnie Tyler… I WORSHIP!!!

The final glossy & glittery word:

After 38 years, I still stay in touch with this amazing and talented Goddess, TASHA KOHL! a.k.a. Jery F. Kohl Faulkner. He answers from his home in Dallas.

WR– Tasha, tell us the love story between you & Total Eclipse.

Tasha Kohl– When I first heard Total Eclipse of The Heart, I knew it had to be a Tasha number! It had such a haunting, eerie quality, and also that edgy raspy voice, intertwined with the sadness of the song, and the compelling lyrics… I thought it would surely be a big hit. I have a bit of the flair for the dramatics as you know! Haha!  So, of course, it seemed to me that this was a perfect vehicle. I had recently been through a breakup, and so it was easy to pull from my own emotions of my actual life at that time.

As for its longevity and impact… I think some of the reasons that the song has had such longevity and made such an impact on the pop culture, of that time, is because of the production ideas behind it. I don’t know of anyone that was doing edgy rock and roll ballads at that time other than Heart. So, that in itself, was unique, but then with the production with the full orchestra and sound effects, I think set it apart. Sometimes performances are just blessed with a magic inherent in them… there’s no real reason why they become so popular, they just touch so many different people from so many different walks of life. They touch people because they can relate to the message.

WR– The politics of Drag and labeling.

TK– I’m not sure what your meaning by the ‘politics of Drag and labeling?’ If you’re talking about the actual semantics of female impersonator, Drag Queen, Performance Artist… I would definitely put myself in the category of Performance Artist. Especially later on now in my career,  where my illusion is much more along the androgynous line. My work is more about the character and the music, than necessarily portraying the illusion of a female… Although, most all of my characters are in fact female gender. I was never one to be offended by how you refer to me by name. I knew who I was and what I was doing and I felt that it was art and ART can never truly be judged.

As for my career, I was very blessed. Honestly,  my meteoric rise was mostly due to being at the right place at the right time…pure luck! Ha! As far as the highlights of my career… working at the Landing, in Dallas, and at The Copa, in Houston, with the Fabulous Four, was an amazing experience.  I was blessed to win  Miss Gay Texas, and was twice voted Texas Entertainer of the Year. Back in those days, it was actually voted for by the public in the clubs, not by a panel of judges, so those were very special Accolades to me. I later went on to become the first ever

National Entertainer of The Year, winning a car and almost $10,000.00 in prize money, which  was unheard of, and the largest prize in history for a drag pageant, at that time. When I got to be about 30 years old, I decided that I was getting too old to do drag. Ha! So, I went to hair school and became a hairstylist. My first job I landed was as an assistant with the famous Jose Eber.

I still work as a stylist today, and amazingly enough, I am still doing drag . I have been blessed with a 41 year career, so far, in drag, and I’m still going strong. I produce my own show at the Rose Room at S4 in Dallas twice a year: ICONtheshow!  I still do many special events and special occasions. I’ve done El Paso, Austin, Dallas, Houston and many other Gay Pride events. I’ve been fortunate enough to be interviewed by several magazines and newspapers and featured in the book called  “100 Of The Most Influential Gay Entertainers: Vol. 2.”

The Final Trivia…

After a surgery to remove large vocal nodules, Bonnie Tyler was left with the ‘husky’ voice she has now. It’s true.

NoHo Goes AL FRESCO!

“L.A. AL FRESCO” Program Comes to the NoHo Arts District!

The restaurants of the NoHo Arts District will receive a huge boost this weekend when the “L.A. Al Fresco” program brings outdoor dining to a stretch of Magnolia Boulevard. It is believed to be the first project of its kind that reclaims roadway space beyond the parking lane for dining purposes.

Stay tuned for Al Fresco Fridays! Listen to live music while you have a nibble and a cocktail… al fresco.

For almost two years, Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian has been working with the NoHo community to expand outdoor dining options for neighborhood restaurants. The project assumed greater urgency following the onset of the COVID pandemic, which has devastated the restaurant industry around the world.

“Our NoHo Al Fresco program will be a lifesaver for some of the extraordinary independent restaurants that make the NoHo Arts District what it is. L.A. restaurants and their employees have suffered so much during this pandemic, and this program will provide dining opportunities for patrons who are eager to meet in a safe and socially-distanced environment,” said Krekorian.

At least eight of the participating restaurants — including Tamashi Ramen House, Eat, and Republic of Pie — are set to expand over the next several days.

Krekorian noted that the Los Angeles Department of Transportation responded quickly to his requests to erect the barriers that allow for al fresco dining along the busy stretch of Magnolia, between Lankershim and Vineland. The area retains two eastbound lanes and one westbound lane, with the center lane removed.

“I applaud the Department of Transportation for working expeditiously to bring LA Al Fresco to my district,” Krekorian said. “I appreciate that our City’s transportation professionals are keeping people safe while they help us reimagine how best to use our streets and sidewalks.”

“This project would not have been possible without local businesses, property owners, and LADOT coming together and working with my office to revive the NoHo Arts District during this critical time,” added Councilmember Krekorian. “This is a great example of the kind of teamwork between neighborhoods and the city that will lift us out of this crisis, save businesses and jobs, and retain what is unique and special about each community.”
