May Devun “Say The Words” Single Release

May Devun has a gorgeous voice.

She sings with a range most would envy, and a really beautiful sense of the dramatic.  “Say the Words” is a deceptively simple song,  but she gives it nuance and purpose and a kind of magic as she spirals through layer after layer of pain and emotion.

The production is tantalizingly classic, with brilliant rhythm and twisted composition.  In places its almost a James Bond theme. I can just see the video, all liquid and color and lots and lots of falling.

May Devun has a voice.  Of course, she has a big range and can easily compare to Christina Aguilera and her ilc, but she has more than that.  She has a way of breathily rock out, pumping and screaming with pure tonality and sublime explosive restraint.

I love this track, it will definitely be on my rotation and feels perfect for the upcoming season of over-coats and holiday gloom and dark, dark endless nights….loved it!!!

Theatre West Presents “The Italian in Me”

“The Italian in Me,” written and performed by Dina Morrone.

Theatre West, 3333 Cahuenga Blvd W, Los Angeles, November 10 & 11

I have a confession to make. I have seen this show before.  A year ago Dina Morrone performed this brilliant and hilarious show at Theatre West and I was lucky enough to attend.

This year, to another packed house, she revisits her Italian roots and takes us through her struggles as an actress with a dream to live and work in Italy.

italian in me1

“The Italian in Me” follows its author from Canada to Rome as she searches for her place as an Italian Canadian actress.  He grandmother or “nonna” disapproves at first of her dream to entertain, but once she realizes how determined Dina is, she relents and even becomes her biggest fan as she dives head first into the Rome movie world.

Dina Morone is a brilliantly talented comedic actress.  Fearless and relentless, she recreates every crazy Italian character on her journey.  From various very dodgy agents, producers and actors to priests, doormen and even her lovingly portrayed “nonnao,” she fills each of them with life and sprinkles them with her very unique mixture of mimicry and reverence.  It’s quite a spectacle and absolutely hilarious in its honesty and its truth.

Her story is impeccably told and her life fascinating and inspiring.  She’s a force of nature to be sure and holds the audience captive as she pretzels her way from one strange encounter to the next.  She does eventually find work in Italy, after much praying to various saints and much furious fending off of many admirers.  It all leads her to Fellini’s door and it is the master himself who gives her the best advice of all…”be yourself.”

italian in me

Well, Dina Morrone is nothing if not authentic and has a way of being herself inside every one of her wonderful characters.  Solo shows are tough.  I’ve seen too many to count but I have to say that this is one of the very best.  Beautifully performed, expertly put together, with just the right amount of humor, truth and integrity, “The Italian in Me” is s testament to the hard work, determination and the sheer nerve it takes to be a performer.  Dina Marrone is performer personified….Bravo!!!

Review – “Marriage Story” is one of the best films of the year

Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” is really the story of a couple’s divorce

—with all the emotional and financial devastation that occurs in the wake of dispensing with common sense and resorting to legal experts with varied agendas. The wonder of “Marriage Story” is how each of the major players retains the audience’s sympathy (there are no clear heroes and villains here, unlike say, Kramer vs. Kramer) even when they’re behaving very badly indeed. Another triumph of the film is how it mines the humor in even the darker moments, and in the next moment, flooring you with some cathartic revelation—or the simple unexpected gesture.

Scarlett Johansson’s Nicole and Adam Driver’s Charlie are a New York couple (she is the lead actress in estranged husband Charlie’s theatrical company) going their separate ways, initially with the guidance of a mediator. After a deftly rendered opening sequence wherein we see (through memories depicted in the unspoken letters the mediator has requested of each) what attracted them to each other, the movie plunges us right into a battleground of resentments and suppressed feelings. The bone of contention in the subsequent divorce proceedings is Nicole’s “temporary” move to California (along with their son Henry) to film a pilot—which gets picked up for a series, thus making the move “permanent.” Charlie sees this as a violation of an unwritten agreement that Nicole should remain in New York, while Nicole sees this as an opportunity to become her own person, rather than Charlie’s acolyte/satellite. The fact that their son Henry likes California only intensifies Charlie’s desire to “fight” for Henry, in terms of both custody and residence.

As one watches “Marriage Story”, one becomes painfully aware that despite all efforts at civility, matters will eventually deteriorate, and the ending that the lead characters envision comes at a heavier price—one that both characters seem aware of, yet is only all too inevitable. This film does as good a job as any film in recent memory of juggling various tones and shifts of mood. The serving of the divorce papers, as Nicole has retained the costly legal services of highpowered Nora Fanshaw (an excellent Laura Dern) has moments of regret, suspense, compassion and humor (as Nicole’s sister Cassie is awkward about serving the documents). Charlie’s visits to his potential lawyers, one Ray Liotta’s highly expensive, brutally honest shark, the other Alan Alda’s compassionate, pragmatic mensch offer bracingly sobering and bitingly funny (in their own way) appraisals of divorce law as it relates to parents and gender roles.

At the center of the film though, are two beautifully calibrated performances from Ms. Johannsson and Mr. Driver, and Baumbach’s screenplay and direction offer both actors the opportunity to register strongly both together and apart. They are both given showpiece monologues delivered in long takes, in which Johansson and Driver beautifully convey how little by little, they have seen their characters’ individuality and self-worth erode in the company of the other. There is also a searing, no holds barred climactic confrontation in which (nearly) everything is put out there in uncomfortably plain sight. And then there are the quiet moments, the looks, the brief exchanges, the small revelations, all of which play a major part in the film’s cumulative power. Toward the end, both actors get to deliver signature Stephen Sondheim songs (fitting for a film about “theater” people) that reflect their respective emotional states. One is the jaunty yet revealing “You Could Drive a Person Crazy” for Nicole, Cassie (Merritt Wever) and their mom (Julie Hagerty in fine form); the other is the anthem “Being Alive” and delivered by Driver with as much raw force as the screen can contain. And even when one is emotionally drained from that, the film has a quiet kicker—or two. “Marriage Story” is one of the best films of the year—and another instance where the hype proves to be justified. (Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood also more than justified its hype—what will one do come awards time…?)

Resurrection Fern “Siren” Single Release

With another gorgeous single from her forthcoming album, Resurrection Fern brings us a lovelorn lullaby.

A winsome rhythmic call to arms, to let go, to forget if not forgive.  “Maybe a storm is what it takes to make me free.”

The song is stunningly simple, all acoustic guitar and breathy soulful vocals, it’s a really beautiful ode to letting go, to feeling free to walking your own path without regret.  She’s a gifted songwriter and a moving vocalist.

Fern’s twitch channel, twitch.tv/resurrectionfern is extremely popular and has helped fund her records. Twitch is a brilliant new way to give independent musicians the power to create and fund themselves.

This is indie to its core, catchy, brilliantly constructed, moving, meaningful and profoundly and utterly authentic.  Resurrection Fern is entirely true to herself musically, with nothing left to chance.  Loved it!!!

Galapaghost “A Planet Without An Atmosphere” EP Release

I needed this record…in all the chaos, the anger, the extreme and debilitating lack of control we have right now.

I need to hear these calming tones, these trills and hums and melodic, rhythmic, poetic thoughts.

Casey Chandler, the creator of Galapaghost, had a very bad year. Cancer, death, loss and the same sense that nothing was working in our favor.  He chose to make music, his way of taking terrible and turning into something hopeful, something real.

thumbnail 236453

It’s a beautiful record full of the duplicities of life, mournfully, tragically quixotic.  Every sound was born into existence by Chandler, he is the ultimate in self-produced music.  The twists and turns of each track seem wrenched from his soul, in an almost spiritual way.  Not mopey, strangely without remorse, just forcefully pure and stunningly excellent. He has that Brian Eno special something…echos of longing, you know, he reaches that part of your mind that helps you release the darkness.

He has had recent success writing music for film, notably for the award-winning Italian film Il Ragazzo Invisibile.  It’s easy to see why, his music is cinematic but in a totally uncontrived way in the best possible way in fact, without intention.  I love, love, love this record. It’s just brilliant, syrupy-smooth and divinely gorgeous.

Listen and be transformed!!

Stuart Rogers Studio Presents “Red Light Winter”

Stuart Rogers Studio Presents “Red Light Winter.” Written by Adam Rapp. Directed by Stuart Rogers.

“Red Light Winter” is centered around a shy, awkward and struggling playwright Matt and his aging friendship with Davis, one of those remarkably vile men who is aggressively icy, cynicism somehow enamors the right kind of people and leads to success and fortune.

Matt is his foil, his excuse to revert to adolescent games and weeks away from his wife, who, as it turns out, was Matt’s last girlfriend.  Yes, Davis really is that vile.  It is during one of these trips to Amsterdam that we meet them, Matt holed up in the tacky hotel room trying to write, Davis out tasting the Amsterdam night life.  There is a knock on the hotel door and Matt is greeted by Cristina, a French prostitute that Davis has sent for him.

Matt is of course stricken with fear and fidgets and mumbling niceties, sweetly love-struck by Cristina.  Then Davis returns in all his testosterone drenched slitherings and can’t help but describe his own encounter with Cristina in unnecessarily lurid detail, only to taint Matt’s clear and quick attachment to her.

Davis leaves them to it and, after some conversation, they end up in bed. It doesn’t take long and Cristina leaves Matt asleep, something he has been unable to do well for quite some time.

The second act takes us back to New York and Matt’s apartment and another knock on another door.  It’s been months and Cristina has come looking for Davis.  Davis gave her Matt’s address as his own and Cristina and Matt are left with the realization that their imaginations, their naiveté and their deep longing for real love has sadly led them to this ridiculous and totally unrequited moment.

Davis does, of course, show his horrid face and the rest is really something you should see for yourself.  The play itself is brilliantly grim, although also very, very funny with generous amounts of quickly delivered banter and twisting, vicious rapport.  The subject is searingly sad, as well as all the characters.  Even Davis, whose one moment of poignant honesty is when he tells Cristina, “I’m not a good person,” to try and relieve her of her romantic burden…and he means it.

The actors are all truly excellent.  Each inhabiting their roles with hungry precision and rabid honesty.  Matt is believably insular, lost and painfully self denigrating. Cristina is beautiful, ruined, jaded and aching to be loved. Davis is steely, selfish and heading for a nasty lonely end with any luck.  It’s all put together stunningly well.  Each beat reached perfectly, each scene singing with recognition, each moment drenched with truth.

It’s a tricky play to do justice to I think.  It’s easy to miss the point of all this emptiness and missed opportunity.  But the director Stuart Rogers has managed to walk that fine line of salaciousness and pain very well.  He gives the audience just enough to fall for Cristina and understand her.  Matt and Davis are there to create her path really, and they both do it superbly.  It’s really an excellent production of a fascinating play.  Bravo!

There is some sexual violence and a tiny bit of nudity, although you don’t see much as it’s thankfully dark on stage for those few moments.  No need to embarrass the audience I think.  But you should be aware of the very adult content and storyline, so now you are!

I can highly recommend “Red Light Winter” at the Raven Theatre.  It’s only on Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm and runs through November 23.

The Raven Playhouse, 5233 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood, 91601

Hope’s “Red Man” Album Release

This is a new genre for me, Native American Hip Hop.

Although it makes perfect sense really when you consider that Hip Hop and Rap was born out of the African American experience.  The Native Americans have experienced just as much if not more misery and injustice from a system they had no interest in being part of in the first place.

This album evolved from the mind of Sto:lo/Tahltan Rapper Hope.  Through his music he creates an incredible narrative of an indigenous man living in the world of the colonizer.  He faces head on the troubles and the losses facing indigenous people in Canada.  Addressing the Canadian 60s Scoop and the AIM Program, both taking indigenous children away from their families to be raised by middle-class white families.  His own mother was a child taken from her home.

His lyrics tell his own story as well as the stories of his friends and family.  Alcoholism, depression, anger, desperation and a continuous search for their own place in their own land.  His lyrics are haunting, powerful, descriptive and real.  There’s so much pain in every line, but there is also humor and love and a kind of tenderness.  The production is also excellent.  There’s a real warmth that runs through the album, in amongst the rage and the rhyme.

Hope’s storytelling may sound modern but it comes from the deepest part of his people’s experience.  The importance of passing on feelings and connections to each other doesn’t fade over time, it grows stronger.  There is just as much need to be reminded of racism and marginalization of minorities today as there has ever been and artists like Hope are vital in that need.  Musically he reminds me of the very best of early Kanye,  with beautiful melodies and gorgeous vocals by him and some really excellent female vocals with soulful and luscious sounds.

In short, I surprised myself and absolutely loved this album. Give “Hope” a chance…

Michelle Creber “Haunted House” Single Release

This is quite a remarkable single from Michelle Greber’s debut album, “On Display,” released last year.

It showcases her impressive voice, crystal clear and full of emotion, soulful with an enormous range. She can really hit those huge high notes!

She sings like a cross between Pink and Lady Gaga, with a whole lot of Broadway show.  The song is really catchy, not at all your classic commercial top 20 stuff, much more memorable than that, much more timeless.

Michelle is an actress and it certainly comes through in her dramatic and acrobatic vocal delivery.  “Haunted House” is a gorgeous, entertaining and beautifully written song.  It feels like a solo for the heroine of a big musical, the song that reminds her of her own strength just when she really needs it the most. Gorgeous production, well crafted, meaningful and purposeful.  The lyrics excellent, heartfelt and very very clever. I loved it frankly!

Article Review Writing: Student’s Guide

While it is not the type of essay that you will be writing the most when you are at college, it is not uncommon for a professor to assign an article review.

It is a method used to introduce you to some of the most popular articles in your field of study, and by writing the article review, you should be able to gain a better understanding of the subject matter.

On this page, we want to introduce you to how you can go about writing an article review. Don’t worry, it is far simpler than you may think.

What is an article review?

In order to write an article review, it is probably worth having a solid understanding of what one is.

To put it simply; an article review will look at a specific article. You will then provide an outline of what is in the article, summarizing what the article says and the arguments it makes. You will then critique the article. It is unlikely that you will be bringing any other research into your article review. You will simply be looking at the article you have been given and writing about that. It really is quite simple. You don’t need to do anything fancy when article review writing. Just summarize an article and critique it.

The best way of understanding the concept of an article review is to look at an example. A great one will be this Bid4Papers review on Omnipapers.com.

The outline of an article review

There are three key components to your article review. This excludes your introduction and your conclusion:

Outline of the article. Highlight key points and any information included in the article. Discussion of the positives in the article. State whether anything in it is ‘true’ and highlight whether the methodology etc. was correct. Critique the article. State where they went wrong. Whether the article is inconsistent, or whether key information is left out.

Start by reading through the article

You can’t write an article review without taking the time to read through the article. It should take a good few hours because you will be going through it multiple times. The first time you read it, you will want to do nothing but absorb the information. You can then go through the article a few more times to make notes.

You should pay special attention to the way that the author introduces the article. You can get a brief overview of what the author believes the article outlines. You can then make a note as to whether they have met what they claimed to have met or not.

Think about what you have learned in class

Your professor would have given you this article because they want you to apply the knowledge that you have gained in class. It is important that you think about what you have been taught, and how it may be applicable to what the article states. Do your lessons contradict what you are meant to review? Does it support it? Make notes here. However, do bear in mind that you probably shouldn’t be bringing other articles into your writing unless t is 100% required.

Writing your review

Start by writing an outline for your review.

You will need to sum up the article at the start. Make sure that you do this in your own words. Do not be afraid to get technical here. This essay will be written for somebody who is knowledgeable about the subject. You do not need to explain every minute point.

After this, draw up an outline of the arguments you wish to make. This is where the bulk of your review will be. When you are writing your outline, try to ensure that the points you are making are in a logical order. Try to ensure that each paragraph is somewhat linked.

When it comes to writing your essay, take your time. Go into depth on points. This will only be your first draft, but try to make it as brilliant as you can.

Editing your review

The final step will be editing your review. This will take a lot of time. You aren’t just checking for grammar and spelling mistakes here. You want to ensure that the points you have made in your review actually make sense. If they don’t, either edit them or cut them completely.

We know that an article review is going to be unlike anything you have tackled before, but if you read the article through completely, and then plan the key points that you want to make, we are positive you will be able to score yourself a high grade.

Actors “To Study or Not To Study”

A question that keeps coming up in my acting classes is, “What technique is best?”

Stanislavsky, Strasberg, The Actor’s Studio, Meisner, Chekhov, scene memory, improvisation, Hagen, Adler, Shakespeare, Drama School, stage combat, classical training, diction, voice, dialects, movement, The Alexander Technique…the list goes on and on.

The safe answer is to explore and use what works for you. But the average novice doesn’t have a clue what might work and what might not. The expense of classes, private or group, and the staggering amount of classes, teachers, coaches available just in the San Fernando Valley could give anyone pause to reconsider this profession. What about natural talent? What about learning craft? Where does a certain technique fit into all of this? I don’t know.

In my case, as I mentioned before, I came into the business untrained and was offered a job on a feature film with no credits or experience. Untrained is a true statement. I had never received instruction or an introduction to any technique at the time. The issue of no credits was also true. This was my first professional, paid, SAG job. But when it comes to experience, I would have to say that my childhood gave me the opportunity to be an actor almost every time I stepped out of the door. I went to seven different primary schools growing up. And at every new school, I would reinvent myself over and over, playing different characters borrowed from films and television. I would even argue that my first acting teachers were, Quinn, Ball, Peck, Brando, Olivier, Guinness, Dunn, Hepburn, Colbert, Davis, Stewart and Grant. Each one of these influences attached themselves to my psyche and soul.

My first acting teacher happened to also be a tennis student. His name was David Lampson.

I went back to work as a tennis pro at an indoor club in Danbury, Connecticut. By this time it was a well-known fact by the patrons that I’d been plucked from obscurity and given a role in a feature film. However, I was also back hitting tennis balls to screaming kids who had no love for the game. I was still going to New York on my days off and auditioning for everything and anything. I was also hitting the local theatres for auditions for plays. I had never even seen a play, let alone been in one. How hard could it be? You learn the lines, a director tells you where you stand and you speak. I was in big trouble. David took pity on me and told me that I needed to have some training. Fortunately for me, we traded tennis lessons for acting lessons.

His method was simple and something similar to what I was already doing, if you can call that a technique.

He handed me a play and told me to read the entire thing. He assigned me a character from that play and he wanted me to figure everything out about the character. I didn’t have to memorize the lines because I wasn’t going to rehearse scenes from the play with him.  He did, however, insist that I know the meaning and reasons for my character’s lines. Once I did that, he invited me to his house to receive an assignment.

I arrived at his house to discover that he was hosting a dinner party. He greeted me at the door and whispered in my ear that he would be introducing me to his friends as the character in the play and I was to act, think, and speak as the character the whole evening and, that by the time the party was over, the guests would be convinced I was the character I was playing. It was brilliant and insane. David was all about imagination and the need to commit myself to a character and immerse myself in the character. I was an actor who would totally become the character. David was a great first teacher and he encouraged me to be true to myself and to play like a child when I was acting.

In part two, I will talk about the late and great George Shdanoff, who greatly influenced my approach to playing characters and always reminded me to hold on to the truth.

The Porters of Hellsgate Presents “Romeo & Juliet” and It’s Brilliant!

Written by William Shakespeare. Directed by Gus Krieger.

Running November 2 through December 1, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm

This is the 30th of Shakespeares plays that the good people at the Porters of Hellsgate have produced, on their spectacular way though his entire cannon.  I have to admit, I’ve been rather looking forward to it…

They have staged the play traditionally, thankfully.  No apocalyptic future, no startling modern twists.  Rather they have chosen to let the words do their magic, the characters stir our souls and the sorrow do its worst.

thumbnail IMG 2013

This play is iconic of course, the story has been told and retold a thousand times and in as many ways.  So what is it that moves us so?  What is it about these star crossed lovers and their cursed families that prove so hard to shake even though we always know their bitter end?  It’s a mystery I suppose.  Or is it the way the play unfolds with laughter, lust and teenage trouble?  With heartache and rivalry and kids with too much time on their hands and no real consequences?  Too much privilege can make the fall all the farther and all the harder.

The players are perfection, as the Porters players always, always are.  Lovely Romeo and precious Juliet.  The fights are expertly done, the anger visceral, the characters proud and brooding and vain.  There are a couple of gender flips, which is barely noticeable honestly, but add hugely to the play in subtle and real ways.  It all works splendidly.  No flash, no fluster, all commitment and honesty and heart.

thumbnail IMG 2015

You might imagine that you couldn’t mess up “Romeo and Juliet.” You’d be dead wrong if you pardon the pun.  I’ve seen some shocking productions, and this is definitely not one of them.

The Porters of Hellsgate are nothing if they are not shrewd and this production is a beautiful, billowy, intoxicating, rollicking, heartfelt interpretation of one of the most beloved stories ever told.

They followed the language, they worshipped the story and left the actors to tear our hearts out with abandon. It’s a wonderful production with no coyness, no smirks, no ‘lessness.’

Shakespeare is a god of prose for a reason and this play is all his talent at its very best. So let it be I say and The Porters of Hellsgate have done just that…and it is brilliant!

The Victory Theatre Center Presents “Elijah”

Written by Judith Leora. Directed by Maria Gobetti. Produced by Maria Gobetti and Tom Ormenyi.

Judith Leora, the rather brilliant playwright of the Victory Theatre’s recent production of “Show Pony” has bought her new play “Elijah” back to the wonderful production team of Tom and Maria.

Maria also directs this compelling drama, set in a TGIFridays in the middle of a small town during hurricane Elijah.

A group of travelers are forced off the highway and gather in the only place they can find open.  The owner of the restaurant had only come by to check it was still standing, but the flood of people looking for shelter made her open her doors and struggle to feed them all with one cook and her young, inexperienced niece as the only waitress.

72854572 2421748284546923 4974019264928284672 o

It’s chaotic of course and as the lights flicker on and off and the storm rages on the story focuses in on one particular group, sat in the back of the dining room, a young couple on an impromptu vacation, women and a man who arrived separately.

It becomes clear fairly quickly that their stories are as complicated as the hurricane.  The town is home to a large prison and the man and women are there, with wildly different reasons, for the execution scheduled for that very night.  One a protester and one a supporter. I’ll let you discover which is which.

The young couple picked an unusual place for a break, there is nothing in this tiny town but the prison and the people who work there.  But the girl has her reasons, and soon enough the boy  figures them out.

This play is all about the fragility of human nature.

How we can be so sure of what we believe and be suddenly just as unsure?  Storms will always rage and people too, but we all have our secrets and we all have our million reasons why and in the end what is any of that worth.

The play is exquisitely produced.  The staging and set design are phenomenal, but then plays at The Victory always are – such amazing attention to detail, always perfect and subtle and exactly what the play deserves, an anchoring to a place that is so familiar to us all, for a story that I can promise you is absolutely not.

“Elijah” is a wonderful play beautifully performed by gifted actors.

I believed all of them and felt as if I had spent a couple of hours riding out the storm beside them in that drafty TGIFriday’s.  Bravo yet again to The Victory Theatre Centre! I highly recommend “Elijah.”

Preparing for Parenthood

So you’re about to become a parent. Congratulations!

Parenthood may be one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have. As you prepare for life with your baby, here are a few things you should think about.

You’ll have to buy a lot of things before (or soon after) your baby arrives. Buying a new crib, stroller, car seat, and other items you’ll need could cost you well over $1,000. But if you do your homework, you can save money without sacrificing quality and safety. Discount stores or online retailers may offer some items at lower prices than you’ll find elsewhere. If you don’t mind used items, poke around for bargains at yard sales and flea markets. Finally, you’ll probably get hand-me-downs and shower gifts from family and friends, so some items will be free.

Buying all of the gear you need is pretty much a one-shot deal, but you’ll also have many ongoing expenses that will affect your monthly budget. These may include baby formula and food, diapers, clothing, child care (day care and/or baby-sitters), medical costs not covered by insurance (such as co-payments for doctor’s visits), and increased housing costs (if you move to accommodate your larger family, for example). Redo your budget to figure out how much your total monthly expenses will increase. If you’ve never created a budget before, now’s the time to start. If it looks like the added expenses will strain your budget, you’ll want to think about ways to cut back on your expenses.

Review your insurance needs

You may incur high medical expenses during the pregnancy and delivery, so check the maternity coverage that your health insurance offers. And, of course, you’ll have another person to insure after the birth. Good medical coverage for your baby is critical, because trips to the pediatrician, prescriptions, and other health-care costs can really add up over time. Fortunately, adding your baby to your employer-sponsored health plan or your own private plan is usually not a problem. Just ask your employer or insurer what you need to do (and when, usually within 30 days of birth or adoption) to make sure your baby will be covered from the moment of birth. An employer-sponsored plan (if available) is often the best way to insure your baby, because these plans typically provide good coverage at a lower cost. But expect additional premiums and out-of-pocket costs (such as co-payments) after adding your baby to any health plan.

It’s also time to think about life insurance. Though it’s unlikely that you’ll die prematurely, you should be prepared anyway. Life insurance can protect your family’s financial security if something unexpected happens to you. The death benefit can be used to pay off debts (e.g., a mortgage, car loan, credit cards), support your child, and meet other expenses. Some of the funds could also be set aside for your child’s future education. If you don’t have any life insurance, now may be a good time to get some. The cost of an individual policy typically depends on your age, your health, whether you smoke, and other factors. Even if you already have life insurance (through your employer, for example), you should consider buying more now that you have a baby to care for. An insurance agent or financial professional can help you figure out how much coverage you need.

Update your estate plan

With a new baby to think about, you should update your will (or prepare a will, if you haven’t already) with the help of an attorney. You’ll need to address what will happen if an unexpected tragedy strikes. Who would be the best person to raise your child if both parents die? If the person you choose accepts this responsibility, you’ll need to designate him or her in your will as your minor child’s legal guardian. You should also name a contingent guardian, in case the primary guardian dies. Guardianship typically involves managing money and other assets that you leave your minor child. You may also want to ask your attorney about setting up a trust for your child and naming trustees separate from the suggested guardians.

While working with your attorney, you should also consider completing advance medical directives. These documents allow you to designate someone to act on your behalf for medical and financial decisions if you should become incapacitated.

Start saving for your little one’s education

The price of a college education is high and keeps getting higher. By the time your baby is college-bound, the annual cost of a good private college could be almost triple what it is today, including tuition, room and board, books, and so on. How will you afford this? Your child may receive financial aid (e.g., grants, scholarships, and loans), but you need to plan in case aid is unavailable or insufficient. Set up a college fund to save for your child’s education. You can arrange for funds to be invested in the account(s) that you choose. You can also suggest that family members who want to give gifts could contribute directly to this account. Start as soon as possible (it’s never too early), and save as much as your budget permits. Many different savings vehicles are available for this purpose, some of which have tax advantages. Talk to a financial professional about which ones are best for you.

Don’t forget about your taxes

There’s no way around it: Having children costs money. However, you may be entitled to some tax breaks that can help defray the cost of raising your child. You may qualify for one or more child-related tax credits: the child tax credit, the child and dependent care credit (if you have qualifying child-care expenses), and the earned income credit (if your annual income is below a certain level). For more information about tax issues, talk to a tax professional.

Gloria Gifford Conservatory Players Presents “The Art of Dining”

“The Art of Dining,” Written by Tina Howe and Directed by Gloria Gifford.

6502 Santa Monica Blvd., Hollywood, 90038

Each time I see a play at the Gloria Gifford Conservatory, what I always come away with is a sense of adventure.

Gloria Gifford and her band of fearless actors take us on voyages of discovery, drama, hilarity and above all…fun.

T47 3 REVIEW Art of Dining 850x560

“The Art of Dining” is set in the house of a couple who had the brilliant idea of starting a restaurant in their house.  Hannah is the chef and Paul, her husband who gave up his successful job as an attorney, is the waiter.  Within a few weeks of opening they have developed a remarkable reputation and have bookings for weeks ahead, but Paul wants to cash in while they can and pay off their business loan in record time, putting tremendous pressure on Hannah, who is alone in the kitchen.  Paul handles the stress by eating everything in site and eventually something has to give.

The play is set in their home, in their kitchen and dining room and it centers around three tables of guests, each with their own very particular quirks and wonderfully rich personalities.  A couple in love with food as much as each other.  Three friends out for a birthday dinner, boisterous and gloriously bickery.  A frazzled slightly nutty woman meeting a man she has never met before, she is a writer of short stories, many of which center around her own neurotic relationship with food.

These three tables, three stories blossom as Hannah and Paul fall apart.  It’s a fascinating examination of power and lust and longing.  Paul and Hannah long for success and freedom, the table of girls long for happy release, the couple long for more pleasure, the writer longs to be accepted and her editor companion longs for more of the delicious food.

thumbnail ArtofDining1

It’s funny, bold and far from boring.  It’s intense, full-on, powerful and steamy.

The performances are loud and big and furiously good.  They take no prisoners, but then they never do at Gloria Gifford shows.  She picks the best material, always pushing the boundaries and challenging the audience as well as the actors.  This play is hilarious, the pace fast and the stakes are high, but the result of all this ‘crazy’ is sublime.  The smells of the food Hannah cooks are delicious and real and the delight with which the guests imbue her offering absolutely mesmerizing.

“The Art of Dining” is another entertaining and unusual piece by a company that seems to revel in the bizarre and the gorgeously human…thank goodness!!! Bravo!

“The Book That Won’t Close”

“The Book That Won’t Close,” Written and Performed by T.L. Forsberg.

Part of the BFF: Binge Fringe Festival

Santa Monica Playhouse, 1211 4th St, Santa Monica, CA 90401

A one-person show is a very delicate form of art within an art and can live and die by the first few minutes of the introduction. T.L. Forsberg’s “The Book That Won’t Close,” instantly envelopes the audience in the beautiful vortex of Forsberg’s life. She is a force, a delightful, intense force with which to be reckoned. Chapter 1 “No Man’s Land,” shows her personal isolation within herself: Deaf versus the hearing world as well as jumping into her sexual addiction. Quite a feat indeed. The character of Treva, a trans, serves as her sponsor and sort of time lord.  Forsberg blows out the stereotypes of the deaf world. There should be a continuum like the autism spectrum she says. The audience soon finds out that the hearing world is actually the deaf one because of its attempts to victimize and stunt by using terms as hearing-impaired. Soon TL finds herself in a gay church after a broken relationship in an attempt to find where she belongs. Treva represents the hybrid of the trans community and the notion that sexual fluidity should be respected and not feared, a perfect metaphor for the deaf community as well.

Her fantastic childhood memory recreations with the avuncular, Liam, (Liam Neeson-like, yes, that Liam) her Irish inner guide, is hilarious! Forsberg is a master at unfolding the uncomfortable societal taboos and interacts with the audience quite successfully. The sound/visuals crafted expertly by Glenn Longacre lend credence and merge seamlessly with the chapters. One particular visual, that of a little girl letting go of a balloon, gives the audience a chance to experience the relief of the pain and rejoice in TL’s transformation.

Forsberg’s characters, her graceful, dance-like movements underline her vulnerability and underscore how as a virtuoso conducts a symphony, she conducts the audience through this exquisite journey of her life of addiction, sorrow and healing the little girl within. The character of the little girl represents the dichotomy of deaf and hard of hearing world: the deaf do not accept her and the hearing world says you’re impaired. But at the end they merge in the magnificent hybrid that is Forsberg. Kudos to Jessica Lynn Johnson, who developed and co-directed along with TL, making this one-person, art within an art reverberate in this reviewer’s estimation as the best one-person show I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. This is the show not to be missed! TL Forsberg, is a hypenate in showbiz: actor, director, writer, singer, but most importantly, a successful human, hybrid that came out of the other end of a horrific journey, wiser, smarter and lending much needed love and unity to the world at-large!

CBD AFTER WORKOUT: GOOD OR BAD

There are many substances found around the world, produced quite naturally, that has amazing sets of properties.

Such substances and natural products were used since time immemorial for various purposes. These kinds of substances have a long history of religious and cultural use and also recreational abuse. Before the standardization and classification of such substances as narcotics, these substances were freely available for any kind of use.

One such amazing, naturally available in the cannabis plant. Cannabis includes a whole family of plants having various species such as Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indicaamong others. These plants are rich in alkaloids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) which have amazing effects upon the body and the mind. Its use leaves a sensational “high” among users and can relieve pain, relax the body, prevent nausea and so on. Of these two major components of the cannabis plant, THC is the psychoactive component and directly adheres to neuro-receptors in the brain. CBD, on the other hand, has physiological effects and is coming up as a fascinating wonder drug.

CBD is a fine alkaloid found in the cannabis plant that is put to lots of uses nowadays. Skincare products contain a trace of CBD, medicativelozenges have a certain amount of CBD, and it can be smoked for recreational purposes and so on. CBD is also a lovely drug that can be used during or after workouts to reap major benefits from the workout.

  • No More Nausea: As stated earlier, cannabis has an impressive effect against nausea. Oftentimes, after a heavy workout session, the body takes time to recover from it and there is a persistent feeling of nausea. CBD is available without its psychoactive counterpart THC, thus keeping all the high-effects at bay while successfully limiting nausea.
  • Adjust Body to Different Routines: CBD has a lovely effect on the whole body as far as its contribution to workouts is considered. Firstly it can be taken before a workout session. In this scenario, the CBD is successful in creating a sense of alertness and focus that enables you to work out more efficiently and properly.

CBD can also be taken during or after the workout session. This ensures that the body gets the requisite amount of calmness that is mandatory after a workout. The most impressive property of CBD taken after a workout is two-folds. If you are someone who likes to work out in the evenings, after a busy day, you are probably left alert and unable to get a calm sleep. CBD can calm your senses and relax your body thus enabling you to have a good night’s sleep.

On the other hand, if you have workout sessions in the morning, it is probably very draining. It means that it takes up a lot of your energy and you have difficulty staying awake for the rest of the day, as you go about with your work. CBD can help to increase your alertness naturally in this case and is much better in doing so than tea or coffee. In such a scenario it helps you to go about with your day without any problem or lagging.

  • Endocannabinoid System: Every individual has an endocannabinoid system. This means that the brain and central nervous system have cannabinoid receptors. They are activated by such things as CBD and THC which in turn produces all the wondrous effects on the body and the mind. The endocannabinoid system is responsible for a lot of bodily functions such as appetite, metabolism, immunity, and coordination. Working out takes a toll upon these systems of the body and taking CBD helps to regulate all these systems. Thus, if you are taking CBD after a workout session, you will be able to restore to your full potential more easily.
  • Higher Endurance: When you work out, your muscles are in a constant process of tearing, healing and subsequently building up. A condition known as Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness (DOMS) affects the body after a workout. This is the reason for the aching body and desire for rest after a workout. As CBD can ease pain and relieve soreness, it is of tremendous help under such a situation.
  • Burn Fat Better, Get in Shape Faster: Fat is transferred to the different body parts through the bloodstream and upon reaching target regions they are deposited and solidified. The solidification of the fat molecules on the cells of the body leads to the actual phenomenon of becoming fat. When you are taking CBD, it has inherent properties that do not allow fats molecules to solidify. It acts by stimulating several proteins in the body which reduces fat deposition. Thus you can effectively cut down on fat with the use of CBD and get closer to that sculpted body. Be sure to get your CBD from a trusted vendor like industrialhempfarms.com/ as it is often mixed up with THC and the latter is not something you’d want for your body.

CBD is hugely beneficial in a lot of ways and does not have any addictive effect on the body. Research is still going on in this field to have a better understanding of the role of CBD in all its actions. It can be used regularly but its dosage should be controlled to get the desired effects.

Express to Success – for L.A.’s Homeless

***

The NoHo Mottos is: “NoHo is only as great as its people.”

Meet local resident and business owner Jack Witt. He was the past president of the Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, and is the owner of Get Fit with Witt and Active World Journeys, plus he writes fun and informative travel blogs for NoHoArtsDistrict.com. Jack is always doing something to make North Hollywood a better place for everyone, and has been since 2000.  This year, Jack and friends are taking their tradition of service on Thanksgiving by ditching the food and focusing on moving…moving with the METRO.

Jack’s 2019 Thanksgiving program is Express to Success – for L.A.’s Homeless.

What made you decide to do this project?

I always like to do some type of volunteering on Thanksgiving. In the past that has included feeding the homeless; however, I noticed that they almost get too much food on that day. Everybody’s hearts are in the right place feeding them, but I thought why not do something to help the homeless that didn’t involve food.

Why TAP cards?

We’ll be raising money to load Los Angeles Metro TAP cards with day passes so the homeless can use them to go to job interviews, health care appointments, family and/or friends visits, etc. People can donate here on this GoFundMe page. Anything helps and currently a One Day Pass is $7, a 7-Day Pass is $25 and a 30-Day Pass is $100.

Will METRO donate the cards so the community can fill them?

Unfortunately, L.A. Metro is not going to donate the TAP cards. I was passed around through several departments but they were not receptive to the idea of donating the TAP cards for the project (And of course that drives me to make this happen in a big with or without their help!)

Where will you give these out?

One of my private clients is active with the homeless committee on a local neighborhood council and said we can hand them out at several access centers around the East Valley that homeless can go to each day. These centers are a good example of progress that local community and civic groups are making on the homeless issue.

Where can folks donate their extra cards?

People can help us out by dropping off used or unused TAP cards at NoHo Hair Salon 11049 W Magnolia Blvd #111, North Hollywood, CA 91601 from now and until Thanksgiving.

Can someone volunteer to help?

If anybody is interested in volunteering to hand out the cards on Thanksgiving just let me know. I do hope the project and outreach grows and then we can make it a quarterly or even monthly charity program. Currently it’s not a 501(c)(3) so donations are not tax deductible.

Thanks for doing good in the NoHo Arts District!

The Whitefire Theatre Presents “Live Pilots Society”

Written by Kate and Wayne Robbins, Jim Geoghan, Ryan Paul James and Jason Maloney.

What a brilliant concept.  Five short plays, all in TV pilot format, all hilarious and totally believable in subject, story and tone.

With fully fleshed out characters, classic sitcom design and a perfect excuse for the strange and unusual, the quirky and the oddly profound.

The storylines range from a wild west Uurologist/sheriff, a mob-backed, high-concept restaurant, a billionaire social media influencer colonizing Mars, a brain injured, retired football pro/stay at home dad and a fired Wall Street big shot slumming it as an elementary school teacher’s assistant.

These might seem a little far fetched and that is of course part of the point. But they all actually work anyway, quite magically.  I can totally imagine a studio executive somewhere giving a green light to any one of these.  In fact, I am ever so hopeful that they will!

The performances are wonderful, fully committed as only the best comedy can be, and everyone is having a blast, which, of course, translates directly to the audience.

It’s like the weirdest, craziest dream you’ve ever had written up and played out before your very eyes.  But funny…very, very funny.  The Whitefire Theatre has a gift for bringing shows to their audience that boldly entertain and invent new genres and “Live Pilots Society” is yet another genius idea made real. I absolutely loved it!

We all need a good laugh these days…and this is it!

It’s running every Tuesday night at 8pm now through November 19…ao don’t dawdle!!

Review – The Lighthouse—just be careful of those seagulls.

There are some valuable lessons to be learned in Robert Eggers’s The Lighthouse.

One of course, is not to commit yourself to an extended period of employment under isolated and strenuous conditions without fully considering the emotional and physical toll of such a commitment. The lighthouse keepers (or “wickies”) in The Lighthouse have committed to a month of maintaining the light, and all that goes with it. For Willem Dafoe’s Thomas Wake, an old sea dog, that duty means lording it over his younger subordinate Ephraim Winslow (Robert Pattinson, a long way from Twilight.) by assigning him every exhausting job that Wake can devise (all for  the good of the lighthouse), only rarely deigning to use up his precious time in assisting Winslow. (And when he does, it’s to show him up, ridicule him, or chastise him—all in service to the lighthouse and to the sea.)

During the course of the four weeks, these two wary workmen take turns taunting each other and occasionally revealing isolated bits of personal information, especially after (finally) “enjoying” a drink together. (Pattinson’s Winslow only grudgingly partakes of demon rum–initially.) There are also several strange sightings, some of which may imagined…some not. On several occasions, Wake warns Winslow about the dangers of killing a seagull—which proves especially prescient given the proceedings. (Another valuable lesson—listen to Dafoe when he warns you about…anything.)

I really don’t want to reveal much about how The Lighthouse plays out. You may be able to predict the ending—you may even guess the final image. What is fairly compelling though is how the film gets there. There are twists and turns once it becomes apparent that the lighthouse keepers’ stay will be a little longer than four weeks—and the filmmakers leave the viewer unsure as to whom or what to believe concerning the mental state of the two wickies. Eggers and cinematographer Jarin Blaschke chose to film the action in black and white, and with a noticeable narrow frame at times, which serves to heighten both the isolation and sense of entrapment (as well as a perpetual discordance). Dafoe and Pattinson make worthy antagonists, barely able to tolerate each other when sober, and only approximating any real connection when both are in the throes of alcohol. The leads enjoy a veritable actor’s field day, mining their respective characters’ wide range of emotions and hidden motivations. The only flaw is that toward the end, the film does get a little repetitive and protracted, which combined with the heightened playing leads to a one or two moments where a reaction of involuntary laughter (on the part of the audience) may result. However, don’t let this deter from visiting The Lighthouse—just be careful of those seagulls.

10 poses to look thinner in a photo

10 poses to look thinner in a photo

Every girl wants to look perfect in the photo. Successful bloggers and models know exactly how to take the right posture to look slimmer and more attractive. Here are their secret poses that will definitely help you too. The main thing is also to believe in yourself, that you are fabulous, and all your photos will glow with your inner beauty.

  1. Standard standing pose

The very first thing you need to do before the photographer takes the first shot is to move your hip slightly away and take your shoulders back. Keep in mind the image of the letter S and repeat its bends with your body while posing. So, you not only look slimmer but also sexier.

  1. Focus on the hips in full-length photos

When you stand in front of the camera, push your hips back and tilt your body forward (as if you are going to sit in a high chair). This will help to lengthen the legs visually, as well as attract attention to the hips and waist. As for clothing, it’s recommended to wear high-waisted jeans or a skirt. You can also use a real high chair and sit on the edge to make the picture more interesting.

  1. Hands on hips

Why are so many celebrities posing with their hands on their hips on the red carpet? Because such a position is guaranteed to lengthen the upper body and make all unnecessary bulges flatter. If you can’t stand naturally, just put your hands down and move them a little away from the body.

  1. Pose on the bed

This is the most advantageous option since you can naturally stretch out all parts of the body and cover up what you don’t like with a blanket. Depending on whether you are lying with your stomach or back on a bed, the photographer will choose the perfect angle. Experiment with the position of the head and hands.

  1. Put your leg forward

It doesn’t matter whether you are sitting or standing, put one of your legs closer to the camera to extend it and make the body slimmer visually. Weight should be redistributed to the hind leg in case you stand.

  1. Stand with your back to the camera

Stand with your back to the photographer and slightly turn your shoulders to be able to look at the lens. This position implies all attention to the bends, so be sure to put your hips slightly back. Also, be sure to suck in your gut and use your hands to cover the problem area if necessary. While one leg is steady when the other is bent.

  1. Use things to hide the problem area of the body

For example, when you are on the beach and posing in a swimsuit, use a bag to hide your stomach. The same trick is suitable if you are photographed in a dress in everyday life. Use accessories, items, and even your pet. Photos with animals that attract part of the focus on themselves always look cute. The main is to choose a natural pose and an object that isn’t superfluous in the frame.

  1. Pose for a slimmer face

Hold your jaw with your hand to hide the double chin. This pose looks elegant in portrait shots. Also, if you press your tongue to the palate, the double chin will decrease or even disappear. It’s not very convenient but very effective. These tricks are actively used by Hollywood stars.

  1. Control your face emotions

During posing, it’s better not to scream “Cheese” because it adds extra folds and makes the face wider. The same applies to grimaces that show all the imperfections of the skin and face. Use only a natural smile and expressions. Also, avoid direct sunlight because then you will start to frown, which causes unnecessary wrinkles and a double chin.

  1. Give up the photos from the bottom angle

This camera position will make your body bulkier and heavier. It’s better to ask the photographer to shoot you frontally or slightly above. Don’t forget to raise your chin and stretch your neck a little to lengthen your figure.

Photo editing to fix flaws

It’s known that even photos of models are edited before being published in magazines. Therefore, you should not feel guilty if you use Photoshop or any online body editor. The main thing is to choose the perfect program that doesn’t require special skills and provides the whole range of necessary tools for working with the body and skin in a photo.

Retouchme is one of the favorite apps among bloggers. It combines convenience and versatility. Its main function is a body slimmer that helps to always look naturally skinny due to a large number of settings. Retouch me app will help you to create a great portfolio and attractive photos for social networks.

Farruquito’s Flamenco Fusillade Targets The Soraya

***

The brilliance was there from the start. At age 11, Juan Manuel Fernández Montoya, the reigning superstar of flamenco who performs under the sobriquet of Farruquito, appeared in Carlos Saura’s influential movie Flamenco (1995). Shot in silhouette by the legendary Spanish director, the lean, long-legged, and shaggy-haired pre-teen laid down a fusillade of sizzling footwork that still marks his brand nearly 25 years later. When, in exceptional film footage, the lad is joined in dancing by his (clearly doting) grandfather—the legendary flamenco master, El Farruco, who died in 1997—everything about the art form comes into focus. This authentic flamenco puro, virtuosic and unvarnished, passed through time and bloodline, Farruquito and his eight-member troupe will unleash at on Saturday night, November 9.

[In the YouTube video clip of ‘Flamenco,’ Farruquito, as a boy dancer, first appears at 02:36.]

By now a devilishly handsome and goateed 37-year-old (People magazine named him among the “World’s 50 Most Beautiful People”), Farruquito still deploys cutthroat, whipsaw legs and ballistic footwork. He teeters at the brink of stillness, then convulses into percussive forays, toying with the two polarities. He pulls back jet-black hair to reveal his moody, otherworldly expression. It’s drama, music, rhythm and attack packed into one taut figure. It can even be scary. Pausing from his preparations for an ambitious West Coast tour (he’ll travel between Berkeley to Tucson and El Paso and points between including The Soraya), Farruquito recalls his film work with Saura. “It was an incredible experience … sharing with my grandfather, and all the artists that Saura brought together,” he writes in an email from his base in Seville. “It was a very important experience of my life.”

He’s bringing to The Soraya his band of gypsies (three dancers including his partner Gemma Moneo, three singers, a guitarist and a flautist) for a new show, , featuring his own original music and choreography. “For me, flamenco puro comes directly from the heart. It is based in passion and knowledge of the art form,” he says. “It can reach the soul – of those who know flamenco and those who don’t.”

Yes, it is soulful. The Boston Globe characterizes his dancing as, “no dry, buttoned-up affair,” but one that seems, “improvised in the moment — raw, visceral, and executed with blazing intensity and immediacy.” Los Angeles audiences last saw this outstanding dance stylist in 2015, at Disney Hall, performing with the L.A. Phil in Manuel de Falla’s ballet Amor Brujo. It was an experience Farruquito called, “unforgettable. It was beautiful, simply magical.”

The former child prodigy labors under weighty expectations, for example, a quote from the New York Times calling him, at age 18, “the greatest flamenco dancer in this new century.” Farruquito’s personal rubric for success, however, is more modest: “I admire the humble artists who succeed by going the way of truth,” he says.

“This profession is hard,” he continues. “You have to believe a lot in yourself while also not thinking that you know it all or more than anyone else. You have to be open to learn.”

The father of three children (a seven-year-old boy and twin four-year-old daughters), Farruquito has traversed a rocky path with significant setbacks, accidents, and detours by drawing strength from his heritage. “I think my grandfather would be proud,” he says. “He always told me that I should search for my own personality, and approach what I do with respect, knowledge and dedication. And that is what I strive to do.”

The Matrix Theatre

The Matrix Theatre is an iconic L.A. theatre, home to some of the greatest actors of our age.  So it’s fitting, perhaps, that a play with such an important subject is produced at such an important theatre.

“The Double V” is a historical play set in the era of World War II and during the very beginnings of the civil rights movement.

The story revolves around the Pittsburgh Recorder newspaper, which served the large Black population based there.  They receive a letter from a young Black man angry he was unable to enlist in the US Army because of the color of his skin.

The letter moves one reporter so much that she travels to meet its author and brings back a story of far more depth and relevance than she could have ever imagined.

This story is based on true events and reminds us that maybe we haven’t come as far as we had hoped, given the current racial divide.

The bigots are portrayed on stage with in-your-face racism and a hard to stomach hatred of men with far more worth than they.  It’s tough to watch honestly, but important to remember.  It was men such as this one, a young Black man who stood up to something long since tolerated that turned the tide.  A man whose only purpose to do so was to be able to defend a country who didn’t even allow him to vote.

It’s a stunning piece of historical drama, with a lot of love and humor and its own victorious conclusion.

This man’s letter sparked a movement, The Double V, one V for victory in the war and another for victory at home for Black people.  Why should they be allowed to fight for a country that didn’t even see them, that didn’t value them as individuals, that didn’t protect them in the country of their birth?

The performances are truly wonderful.  All stand-outs and all moving beyond words.  This terrible history is, as always, a difficult thing for a country to face, but face it we must.  Bigotry and racism still run through this land and these days it’s far easier to see than ever.  Sadly.

Stories like this one, which have outcomes that make a real difference, a difference we can still feel, are so important to hear.  We can change things, things can truly change.  But only with pressure and courage and unity…and many, many more letters from brave people with much to lose.

Beautifully staged with exquisite set designs and ingenious direction, “The Double V” is a must-see play, full of excellent actors putting their hearts into every word and their souls into every scene.  I cannot recommend this play enough…Bravo!!

Aladdin 2019: Review

A brief disclaimer before we get into this review of Aladdin 2019 – and this might be an ‘unpopular’ opinion, but I really enjoy remakes and reboots. Some people hate them, and that’s cool. “The original was so good, it doesn’t need a remake!”, some might exclaim. Others might accuse studios of rebooting a franchise because they’re out of creative ideas for new movies.

Those people might not be wrong on both points. Let’s not be cynical though, for every bad movie remake in history, there have been some truly great ones as well.

However, I kind of see it as song covers. There are some popular songs that have been covered by dozens, even hundreds of other artists. Modern cover bands like Boyce Avenue are making a literal fortune performing acoustic versions of popular radio songs.

And what criteria do we judge a song cover on? How close it sounds to the original performance? Or how the artist covers it, yet makes it their own unique version? Johnny Cash covered “Hurt” by Trent Reznor, and “Personal Jesus” by Depeche Mode – yet The Man in Black’s covers were so uniquely brilliant and emotional, they practically became Johnny Cash songs.

All right, I’m focusing a lot on music covers, but here’s the point I’m making. The criteria for judging covers, remakes, and reboots is subjective. My criteria for movie remakes happens to be;

  • How good are the actor’s performances?
  • How does the remake capture the original material without being a shot-for-shot remake?
  • Did I enjoy the film?

The last criteria is probably the most important. So with all that said, let’s actually review 2019’s version of the Disney classic, Aladdin.

Casting wasn’t perfect, but the roles fit the bill

From the get-go, the casting decisions for Aladdin was met with some controversy. Some were upset that Disney chose Naomi Scott, a half-English, half-Indian actress for the role of Princess Jasmine, who is ‘decidedly’ Middle Eastern, and they would’ve preferred a much more “ethnic” actress for the role.

Of course, the original Disney version of Aladdin is a smashup of Middle Eastern and Indian culture, so Disney was never really known for 100% geographical accuracy to begin with. And the original folklore Aladdin story is a hodge-podge mashup of Middle Eastern and Asian influence with very unclear roots, so… come on, internet.

aladdin2

Others were upset about Will Smith being cast as the genie, for strange reasons. There was a huge amount of pressure on him for this role, as the original genie was voiced by the late, great Robin Williams. But to be honest, Will Smith is a legendary comedian in his own right, and he was pretty perfect for this live-action adaptation. It could’ve been much worse, like Will Ferrell or something.

Mena Massoud was a great choice, not only because he’s actually Egyptian and thus a believable choice for Aladdin, but because he gave a stellar performance.

Marwan Kenzari made an excellent Jafar, and I’m actually glad they didn’t cast Gilbert Gottfried as the voice of Iago the talking parrot. Gilbert Gottfried’s voice was one of the worst things about the 90s, next to Fran Drescher’s.

So overall, despite what critics say, the casting choices were all absolutely fine, and the performances given were top-notch.

The singing and dancing

Let’s be honest, 80% of the reason we see Disney movies is for the song and dance. The original Aladdin cartoon film gave us some highly memorable songs, like ‘Prince Ali’ and ‘A Whole New World’.

I’m going to be completely honest, I went into the theatre expecting the original soundtrack to be butchered with Will Smith raps, but… it wasn’t? I mean, Will Smith lended a kind of hip-hop influence to the original songs, but he did it in a style that blended very well with the original material. He wasn’t rapping, per se, but singing the original material in his decidedly unique Will Smith hip-hop style, but still remained pretty true to the original themes.

The dance choreography and costumes were excellent, especially during ‘Prince Ali’ – they went full-blown Bollywood mode for that scene.

Conclusion

So if we judge 2019’s Aladdin based on the three criteria points I gave at the beginning of this article, then this was a fantastic remake. I feel like Will Smith redeemed himself for the absolutely horrible remake of The Karate Kid, and overall, it’s a great live-action retelling that will satisfy your 90s nostalgia. And children won’t care about 90s nostalgia, so they’ll enjoy it anyways.

7 Ways to Start and Stick to Student Budget

If you are a soon to be a first year college student, you know how it is important to plan all your possible running costs.

Except for the college fees, a student will need money for books, various educational materials, and even sometimes for turning to experts where he can order a cheap custom essay. All these spending issues will anyway emerge one day. How to manage budget efficiently? Do not forget to leave some expenses for parties and other activities.

Act Like a Boss

It is always good to underestimate your budget. Thus, you will be able to underspend. Create such a financial report on how you are going to invest your money. The first month at college will demand the purchase of educational materials. So, estimate the approximate amount and find out the ways to save money. The solution can be by borrowing books from the sophomores. In addition, it is better to buy a separate planner for your daily spending. At the end of the month, check where you spent the most and how to reduce the cost.

The Difference between Needs and Wants

Yes, you should always think twice either you need a particular item, or you want it. It will help you to save your money if you can stop on time. There should be a list of the things you save money for. And the list of urgent items that will contribute to the studying process. For example, buying a scientific paper is a need if you miss the deadline. But buying the same papers if you have plenty of time to accomplish the task refers to the wants. Feel the difference.

Get a Job

It may sound like a joke, but no. If you are independent of your parents’ income, it is always a good way of controlling the money. The feeling of receiving your salary may make you feel greedy. Besides, the desire to control each penny will be such a nightmare sometimes. Just make sure that work does not deprive you of studying.

Prepare for Unexpected Spending

You want it or not, but Murphy’s law is always there for you. While writing your important assignment, you may come across even with the broken pen. It is a funny situation, but be ready to spend your money even on such small details. Your emergency funds will save your life once, but if not, you can have extra savings.

Don’t Borrow the Money

It does not concern your friends or relatives of course, but you’d better avoid such transactions. They may affect your well-being. Besides, you may face a pretty frustrating situation with friends whom you borrowed the money. Especially now, when everyone can find hundreds of online services for fast loans.

Open a Bank Account

Open a deposit in the bank and put all the money on your savings account. By making regular deposits, its growth can help motivate you to save more. It is an ideal tool for saving money for special occasions, such as a vacation or a desired new smartphone.

Think in Advance

Sometimes such expenses as tickets can be much cheaper if you book it in advance. The same scheme applies to college studying. If you have an urgent assignment, and cannot meet the deadline, turn to online experts. But do not practice excessive use of it. And do not rely on “I need someone to write my assignment for me” scheme when it comes to doing homework. Your friends will only think of you as a lazy person who cannot take control of oneself. Assignments can be done on time if organizing your time properly. Learn more about time management.

Pay attention to your spending and earnings. There are always lots of ways of saving time and budget. If needed, find out more about useful applications, which help to control the spending part. Thus, at the end of the semester, you will end up having savings.
