From LA (Louisiana) to LA (Los Angeles) | The St. Tammany Parish Major Arcana Deck

While waiting for my family to come visit Los Angeles for my Mother’s birthday, I decided to take myself on an art date to a well-established (and well-funded) art gallery in WeHo.

I got to WeHo early enough to find metered parking, and walked into the gallery.

Not able to able to find any of the gallery’s curators or docents through the well-dressed gallery viewers, I resorted to asking the tray-passers by.

You read that properly – this art gallery was catered with appetizers. Not to be outdone by the adjacent Pop-Up gallery I’d like to feature in this post, the well-established and funded gallery offered champagne in real glassware, not the run-of-the-mill solo cups. Since no one was able to point me to an affiliation with the gallery, I did what every gallery-goer would: I enjoyed my champagne, the art, and made my exit. And then I found my first love in Pop-Up Galleries.

Walking slowly on the cusp of WeHo and Beverly Hills, I window shopped the rug stores by cool-breeze and moonlight. I noticed another gallery opening and decided to dip in, not even taking stock of the gallery name. Which I rue not doing in real-time! After scouring the internet for an hour, I finally found the Pop-Up show I easily stumbled onto that Friday night.

The St. Tammary Parish Major Arcana Deck, featuring a reading by Aaron Osborne is a pop-up exhibition running from October 18 – October 28, 2019. Inspired by an 8-month stay on the Louisiana Northshore, Osborne imagines his own Tarot Deck. Housed at 711 N. La Cienega, Osborne’s show featured human-scale Tarot reimagined.

Each of Osborne’s cards had an existential reading of their own – placed as an informational placard adjacent to each piece. As an exemplar, Tarot Card Ten visually displays children against a neighborhood backdrop, integrated into classic playing card iconography. The placard reads: “You are starting at one. No matter how you approach the situation…” The clever concept and play on visual double-entendre hooked me into the Pop-Up, and the vision of Osborne’s was relentlessly refreshing.

Complete with an in-house Tarot card reading, the exhibition space held a re-created shack from the South, where viewers lined up for free readings. The Pop-Up didn’t need any additional bells and whistles to stand on its own two legs, and fortunately, nothing felt contrived or gimmicky.

The entire exhibition was rejuvenating, non-pretentious, well-curated, and standalone in the joy of art. Osborne not only opened space for interactive art with depth, Osborne opened space for gallery audiences to interact organically and jovially – if only for a limited time.

Kratom and why is it so popular: A Complete Guide

Kratom (Mitragynaspeciosa) is a tree-like plant from Southeast Asia that are from the same family as gardenias and coffee.

Kratom has been utilized as a homegrown cure in Thailand and neighboring nations for many years for various sicknesses. It has portion subordinate stimulant and sedative like impacts. In addition to getting utilized for a jolt of energy just as for some mellow relief from discomfort, there is some episodic proof to recommend that it might be useful in the administration of withdrawal manifestations related with sedative fixation.

Since 2000, there has been a generous increment in the rates of kratom use in North America and Europe both as a recreational medication and for the self-administration of torment and sedative withdrawal (a practice prompted against by most restorative experts).

Is it Harmful?

Logical data about the impacts of kratom is restricted, and there have been no controlled clinical preliminaries directed to decide if it is alright for human use. The greater part of our present information with respect to this medication originates from recounted reports by clients and specialists, just as creature tests.

Specialists have discovered in excess of 20 organically dynamic synthetics in the medication, including a few that quandary narcotic receptors in the human mind and can possibly lead towards physical reliance and enslavement.

Despite the fact that the plant has a long history of utilization as a homegrown medication in Southeast Asia, kratom misuse is likewise notable in the district – the medication has been restricted in Thailand, Myanmar and Malaysia because of its addictive potential.

Finally, a few synthetic concoctions found in kratom meddle with medication using chemicals in the liver and may cause hazardous interaction with different medications or prescriptions. Overdoses – some of them deadly – have been accounted for in clients who have taken it in blend with different medications.

Short-Term Effect

Because of the interesting blend of synthetic compounds in kratom, the momentary impacts of the medication are perplexing and variable. The balance between stimulant-like and sedative like impacts relies upon the portion taken, and various clients have detailed essentially various encounters with the medication when taking a similar portion.

Long Term Effect

According to research done on interminable, high-portion kratom clients in Thailand, there are a few abnormal long haul impacts of this medication, for example,

  • Hyperpigmentation or obscuring of facial skin.
  • Anorexia and weight reduction.
  • Psychosis

But, the accessible proof does not propose that long term kratom use harms organs or different pieces of the body.

Effect of Kratom at low doses

At a low portion (1-5 g) of kratom, stimulant-like impacts prevail. These are felt inside 10 minutes and keep going for 60 to an hour and a half. While reports by clients demonstrate that the vast majority discover these impacts lovely, a few clients experience an awkward feeling of tension and tumult. The essential stimulant-like impacts of kratom are like amphetamine, however less serious, and include:

  • Expanded vitality and readiness.
  • Diminished craving.
  • Expanded friendliness.
  • Uplifted drive.

If you want to try any of the Kratom’sproduct then you should refer to trusted brands such as Kratom Crazy.

Effect of Kratom at moderate to high doses

Moderate to high portions (5-15 g) of kratom have basically narcotic like impacts that keep going for a few hours.

The euphoric “high” incited by the medication is allegedly less exceptional than other narcotic medications, and a few clients portray the experience as undesirable, or dysphoric. Other sedative like impacts include:

  • Analgesia (torment decrease).
  • Languor
  • Quiet, fanciful mental state.
  • Suppression of Cough.
  • Decrease in indications of narcotic withdrawal.

Portions of kratom more noteworthy that 15 g have impacts like high dosages of narcotics, including outrageous sedation and lost cognizance at times.

Side-Effects

There are side-effects related with kratom utilisation that range in seriousness from inconvenient to risky. The symptoms are reliant on the portion taken and are like those discovered both for stimulant medications and sedatives, including:

  • Pupillary choking (little students).
  • Facial flushing (becoming flushed).
  • Tremors or loss of engine coordination.
  • Obstruction
  • Perspiring
  • Wooziness
  • Queasiness and spewing.
  • Tingling

Serious harmful impacts have all the earmarks of being uncommon among reports by clients and social insurance suppliers, yet there is little data accessible to assess the genuine threat of kratom use. Most genuine poisonous responses have been related with high portions of kratom (>15 g) and have been described by seizures.

The perils of kratom use give off an impression of being particularly high on account of “Krypton,” which is a home grown item showcased as a particularly intense type of kratom. Krypton is a blend of kratom and O-desmethyltramadol, a concoction generally experienced as a metabolite of the torment drug tramadol (Ultram). This mix builds the burdensome impacts on the central nervous system, and Krypton use has been accused for a few deaths in Sweden.

Effect of its withdrawal

In one examination, over half of individuals who utilized the medication normally for in any event a half year built up a kratom reliance. Subordinate clients of the medication endure physical withdrawal manifestations like those of sedatives on the off chance that they quit taking it all of a sudden. A portion of the manifestations of kratom withdrawal include:

  • Fractiousness
  • Perspiring
  • Queasiness
  • Hypertension.
  • Diarrhoea
  • Runny nose.
  • Joint and muscle torment.
  • Sleep deprivation.
  • Extreme needing for kratom.

How to be in benefit?

  • Because of the stimulating impacts of the suggested variety of kratom, accept it as promptly in the day as could be expected under the circumstances so as not to meddle with your rest propensities. Rest assumes a significant job in keeping up a sound weight.
  • Take it before eating any suppers for increasingly strong impacts.
  • Keep rotating between the prescribed strains or utilize a mix to forestall building resistance and reliance.
  • Abstain from taking it consistently and utilizing Kratompotentiates (chamomile tea, grapefruit, turmeric, watercress, magnesium, Akuammaseed ,Valerian Root, cayenne pepper) as the quicken resistance develop and reliance.
  • Purchase your items from a trustworthy confirmed vender to abstain from getting inadequate items that may contain contaminants that reason unfriendly responses.
  • If it’s your first time then begin with a low portion to maintain a strategic distance from disagreeable symptoms.

Drag Queen Storytelling Hour

It all started with a very innocent question.

I grew up in a very white middle-class neighborhood in Houston, Texas. Spring Branch/Spring Shadows was new and up-and-coming in the 1960s. In fact, it was the number one school district in America in the early part of the 70s. I’m very appreciative and grateful that I had the opportunity to be a student there at the time. Like all neighborhoods, it had its pros and cons.

I can remember the scandalous years of ‘interracial marriage.’  We must save our white girls from black men!

I can remember ‘Concerned Citizens’ meeting in churches in the late 1970s, mobilizing to help Anita Bryant and her quest to save America from the homosexuals.  Save our children from the perverts!

Oh, the silly scandals brought on by silly people.

But bad times are matched with the great times, too.

For me, I’d often sneak out of the house at night, climb onto the roof, and watch the stars… and, let my imagination run wild!

The holidays, vacations, family meals and get-togethers meant everything to me. Watching the Friday night, Saturday night or Sunday night movies on NBC, CBS or ABC were family enriching moments; with popcorn, even! The Oscars were also a major family-time that I cherished!

The newspaper reading experience (in this case, the Houston Chronicle  and Houston Post), in the family room, was a time of discussing current events and socializing with siblings, without the distractions of electronics and what Google has to offer and suddenly close the conversation.

I AM SO THANKFUL WE DID NOT HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA and IPHONES TO KILL OUR FAMILY TIME.

But, as seasons change, we age, get older, we graduate from high school and we find ourselves moving on into different directions and journeys. We will have ‘matured’ into a fine, educated adult figure. That’s a given. Right?

You’d think.

If you lived in Spring Branch, an upstanding Christian community, you learned the importance of kindness, respect and ‘love thy neighbor’ no matter what church you attended.

You know, ‘do what Jesus would do!!’  mentality.

You’d think.

(Note: There were no synagogues or mosques in Spring Branch at the time)

That brings us to this specific story. Recently, on my neighborhood’s FB page, “WE GREW UP IN SPRING BRANCH,” I asked the simple question, “What happened to Drag Queen Storytelling Hour in Houston?”

Well, you would’ve thought an atom bomb had gone off. You would’ve thought that Skynet had been activated and launched. You would’ve thought the zombies in “WWZ” had officially taken over. You would’ve thought the Culture of Drag had converted everyone to lip syncing to ABBA and Madonna hits!

You get the picture.

It’s been years since I was verbally assaulted, insulted and threatened by a handful of horrible, malevolent and ignorant people. And, that’s what happened. A ‘few-few’ that chose to use God and Jesus to cover up their miserable, messed up upbringings.

And, those were the nice words!

They got so ravenous, that within a short time, I had to delete the question and voluntarily remove myself from the group. I probably won’t return. I don’t need to know people like that. And, they do owe me an apology for bad behavior and bullying. I don’t need to be the target of their stupidity.

How could a topic like DRAG QUEEN STORYTELLING HOUR (DQSH) create such an Armageddon-type hysteria?

This fascinated me. I wanted to know more about this novelty. Who started it and who objected to it and why?

I began to make phone calls.

During the writing of this story, I reached out to West Hollywood Public Library. They, themselves, have been targets by a number of anti-DQSH demonstrations. In short, WeHo Public Library just isn’t concerned about it. In their email reply to me, it simply stated that they weren’t giving comments right now. The librarian that I spoke to in-person, however, made it quite clear that DQSH will go on successfully, without interruption, and will continue to enrich the lives of children, as much as their parents, in the City of West Hollywood. So, the demonstrations have had no ‘power’  at West Hollywood Public Library.

The City of Houston, Texas and the Eleanor K. Freed Montrose Library/Houston Public Library, where all this backlash drama and horrorbegan, was asked to comment. That was a month ago and I have yet to hear from the powers that be. In short, they forfeited their chance and moment, at the microphone, to be heard and add to the discussion, and defend themselves.

Shame on them. Shame on them.

I contacted Tracy Shannon. When Queen Tracy speaks, people listen. Her platform, Mass Resistance/Houston, also a group of concerned Christian citizens, have mobilized against Drag Queen Storytelling Hour. The Mission? To keep the program out of all schools and libraries. Permanently.

As I spoke to Mrs. Shannon, I found her very articulate, versed and friendly. She possessed a great wit and a cool sense of humor. She also knows her rights and she intends to exercise them. And, so does Mass Resistance/Houston.

Ironically, when this story started to take root in September, I was working another story in San Francisco. It turns out that I was a mere three blocks walking distance from the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Public Branch/San Francisco Public Library where children’s librarian Barbara Warden works.

Queen Barbara co-created Drag Queen Storytelling Hour and was delighted to not only talk to me, but answer all my questions. So, let’s start from the beginning with Barbara (Also known as Bix!):

Waide Riddle– Just how did DQSH evolve and come into fruition?

Barbara Warden– I didn’t create Drag Queen Story Hour, but I was one of the co-creators. DQSH came about because Michelle Tea, a well-known local queer author and the founder of RADAR Productions had a baby, a little boy she named Atticus. She started thinking about creating some kind of children’s programming for queer families, and came up with the concept. She then moved to Los Angeles with her partner. Juliana Delgado Lopera was the new Creative Director of RADAR, and the organization had received a grant for a project called “Queering the Castro,” a series of events celebrating the queer history and culture of the Castro. As one of the programs, she approached me at my branch library and asked if we would be interested in hosting a Drag Queen Story Hour. I said “yes,” and we discussed a little bit about how the program would run: introduce the Drag Queen and Juliana, the Queen reads a couple of books, maybe does a song, and there is face painting. And, also cookies! The very first ever DQSH happened at the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Branch Libraryin the Castro, where I am the Children’s Librarian on December 12, 2015.

WR– Exactly what happens during Drag Queen Storytelling Hour?

BW– As mentioned, we introduce the Queen, who reads a couple of children’s books (I have an annotated list of over 60 titles appropriate for a DQSH program), does a song or two, and then there is face-painting for the kids and cookies! The Queen is available for photos with the attendees. It’s very sweet and very wholesome. This program has been so popular that we have had over 150 attendees on at least two occasions, in our small neighborhood branch library, and DQSH has gone viral in just a few short years. Queer families feel very valued and validated by the program, which is part of why I believe it is important.

WR– Many parents are concerned for their children’s safety around this type of event, including, perhaps, embarrassing questions. What would you say to these parents?

BW– Drag Queen Story Hour is an entirely safe event, though it can be pretty heavily attended. If your child is not comfortable in a crowd, this might not be the event for them. The only unsafe element would be from protestors; we have been fortunate not to have had protests at our local events so far. This is a good opportunity, however, to explain to children that not everyone thinks DQSH is as wonderful as we do. If parents are concerned about embarrassing questions, they could talk to library staff for some suggestions, or simply decide that this is not the event for them.

WR– Are there background checks for the readers/performers? If not, why?

BW– All of the Drag Queens who are part of SFPL’s Story Hours have worked with children, as teachers, etc. They are all certified to work with children.

WR– Texas has experienced a very negative reaction from religious and conservative groups. Tracy Shannon and Mass Resistance/Houston have shone their dislike and disapproval for DQSH. Main concern being, public funds paying for this type of children’s programming. What would you like these groups to know and understand?

BW– I’m not sure how other library systems pay for their programs, but here in San Francisco, all our DQSH programs are paid for by the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, which raises money for library programming through donations. We recently received a $7,000 grant from a local design company that is specifically to be used only for DQSH programs.

WR– If the public wants to support DQSH, what do they need to do?

BW– Anyone wishing to support Drag Queen Story Hour can make donations to the various local chapters on the Drag Queen Story Hour website at https://www.dragqueenstoryhour.org. If they wish to support their local library in creating or continuing this program, they can contact their library and ask about making a donation. And if they would like to support San Francisco Public Library’s DQSH programming, they can send their donation to the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library, at https://www.friendssfpl.org.

WR– Thank you, Barbara, for your time and explaining your side… Now… on to something fun… Ryan Gosling or Tom Hardy?

BW – Both.

—

Like Barbara, Tracy Shannon is firm in her beliefs and knows how to convey them.

Speaking to her in a 45-minute conversation via phone, I got a sense that the press and YouTube were painting, well, not the most attractive picture of a woman who just wanted to be heard with an opposing view. What do you think?

Tracy Shannon– Thank you for reaching out to me for my responses, Waide. I look forward to reading your piece on Drag Queen Story Hour when it’s published. Hey, and when you come back to the Houston area for a visit, please reach out to me and we can grab lunch.

(I’ll take that up on her!!)

Waide Riddle– Drag Queen Storytelling Hourcame to my attention in September when I was searching for info about it on FB on the neighborhood community page “We Grew Up in Spring Branch.”I was raised in the Spring Branch/Spring Shadows area of Houston, so there’s that connection.

I was shocked by the hateful, malevolent, assaulting and insulting words that were hurled at me, just because I wanted to know ‘where‘ the ‘Storytelling Hour’ had gone.

This piqued my interest and I decided to do a story on it for the NoHo Arts District News.

TS– I am sorry that you were treated in that manner for merely asking a question online. That is unacceptable.

WR– What inspired you to take a stand against Drag Queen Storytelling Hour?

TS– A woman who started Mass Resistance/Houston came to me prior to starting the organization in Houston. She asked me if I heard about DQSH. I had. She wanted to start a Bible Story Reading Time and asked if I would be able to volunteer one Tuesday during the summer month along with other volunteers. I agreed. We both worked on her application but she was told by library administration that no religion was allowed.  Because of this viewpoint discrimination she wanted to go to city hall and raise the concern with our mayor and city council. So, we did and about 20 people went in all. We said we disapproved of this type of programming. Our concerns were dismissed by many on the council and we were lectured on how outdated the Bible was, asked repeatedly what we are afraid of. Members of the Mayor’s staff actually snickered and whispered as we gave statements. Granted all were not eloquent we weren’t all there to preach the Bible. A couple of pastors did go and share some scripture in their remarks.  A former drag queen also went and spoke against the program.  We had not protested the story-hour, yet.  However, the lady who initiated all of this with me had called Mass Resistance to learn more about how to push back against such programming and the organizational director said to keep going to city hall and to go protest at the library.  A local church had already been protesting as well as a handful of grandparents and parents. We joined efforts with them to oppose the drag queen story hour. Those of us opposing it felt like drag queen are not appropriate role models for children. The way we were treated by the library staff and admin and by the mayor and certain council members only further motivated everyone to protest the program. We went back to city on average once a month through March of 2019.  Each time we had new revelations about the program. Prior to exposing the sex offender in the program which caused the shuttering of the program we brought a complete expose’ on the program to the council and mayor which was over 168 pages long and showed the social media of every drag queen involved in the program.  We had hoped that this would illustrate why we felt the drag queens were not good role models for children.  Also, included in that expose’ were numerous ways the library was mishandling the opposition to the program by violating the rights of library patrons.  For example, my daughter was recording and was told she had to stop recording at a DQSH which she attended with me. I was observing and she was to write a paper for her English class arguing both sides for and against DQSH.

WR– Why are you so strongly opposed to parents taking their children to the event?

TS– As mentioned, I did go and took my daughter with me as I observed and my daughter prepared to do a paper on the subject of DQSH.  This particular DQSH was in December of 2018 and was a holiday-themed Story Time. They sang a few songs and read two books, neither was the type listed in the DQSH suggested book lists that have been used at other times.

I am opposed to people taking their kids to DQSH because drag queens are adult entertainers and I believe ALL kids deserve better role models than drag queens. They are children, they can seek out adult things like drag queens when they are adults. A look at the social media of drag queens should be enough to convince most parents that this is not appropriate for children. Still, we have parents who bring their kids to drag conventions, DQSH and even some who allow their children to perform in drag shows.  I disagree with those things simply because I think ALL kids, even LGBTQ youth and youth with families that may be LGBTQ deserve better.  LGBTQ youth are just as intelligent as any other youth and to hold out drag queens as role models for them seem to be selling them short. Surely, the community is not short of role models for youth.

At the DQSH that I was at in December of last year, I witnessed a parent shove her three-year-old son toward a drag queen after the son ran away in fear and she yelled at him “What is wrong with you? Get over there and let me take a picture.”  Children are naturally scared of things that are different. To require a child to override that natural instinct to gain acceptance from the parents or the community is a form of grooming.  I personally believe learning about differences is best done in an organic way as children naturally inquire about the world around them rather than in programming.

WR–  Many parents are concerned for their children’s safety at DQSH, including embarrassing questions. But, don’t you think this is a good opportunity to educate and expose children to the unique ‘diversities’ of communities and people?

TS– Kids in their target age do not get a message of love and acceptance and diversity at DQSH.  They see glitter and sparkle and fun and they equate that with drag queens when that is not what drag is all about. Much of the drag culture is raunchy, hyper-sexual, immersed in kink and erotica and there is a lot of drug use mentioned in the social media of the drag queens. This is inappropriate for minors. The libraries are falsely advertising adult entertainers as safe for children and exposing them to a world they have no business being a part of.  I think the best way to understand people who are different from you is to get to know people who are different than you. That happens naturally all the time and we do not need an overstated drag queen to present differences. Most of the differences we are talking about would not be discernable to young children so why are we even going there with children this young?  Let’s have a story-time without the agenda to promote or endorse any lifestyle, identity or behaviors but promote kindness. I do not think these story-times present those of us with a different worldview in a positive light. We are seen as the bullies and that is how the storybooks often depict those of us who would be outside protesting the libraries.

WR– Texas Public Library made a major goof by letting a bad apple fall through the cracks that should not have been allowed to be a Storyteller. They have owned it. So, why not start over and give the library and community a second chance and apply a more comprehensive background check?

TS– We were objecting to DQSH prior to finding out the library failed to do their due diligence. The fact that there was a sex offender, or two, in the programming only illustrates how determined the staff was to have this program that they didn’t follow their own policies while executing the program. Most drag queens are not sex offenders and we still object to the drag culture being promoted to youth.

The staff who made this “goof”have not been fired. There has not been an audit of the entire library system’s children’s programming to find out just how many other programs for children included sex offenders or if the background checks have not been taking place in other programming for children. The public has a right to know these things, and to be honest, the library should have halted all children’s programming, not just the drag queen story-time once this failure came to light. Are we to believe that only drag queens can be sex offenders? We know better. The library is showcasing its own bigotry by not putting down all children’s programming until a review is done and an independent audit of their policies, programs and compliance with policies is done.

While the program was suspended in March of this year. A senior-level administrator took to Facebook to share that the program only lacked a sponsor and could come back as soon as a week after the revelation of a sex offender being part of the program.  This was not in step with the public statement by the library. She deleted that message shortly after she posted it.  The library said the program would be back. It has not been banned completely. So, we fully expect it to resurface and we wonder if it has been going on covertly or perhaps during this election season the mayor needs this not to be an issue. There have been drag queen story hours held in private businesses locally since the library suspended its program.  We have not protested those.

WR– You spearheaded Mass Resistance/Houston. Tell us about that, and educate us on what its purpose and mission is towards DQSH. Also, your main concern being, public funds paying for this type of children’s programming should not be allowed. Period. Correct? Please explain.

TS– The spearheading of Mass Resistance/Houston was actually started by a local woman we called Granny Linda. She had tried to start a Bible Story Hour for children but was told by the staff it was not allowed.  We simply started with a few women who wanted to do a story-time of our own.  We decided to let city hall know our concern that other programming was not allowed and that we objected to drag queens as role models for youth.  The way we were treated by some members of the council and the mayor further inspired locals and regional activists to get involved with our opposition to drag queen story hour. Having been dismissed by the bulk of the council and the mayor, we went about setting up a drag queen research team (yes, it is a thing) and we set out to show the council just what the drag culture is like and what the role models at the library do in the after-dark hours. Public funding of libraries means the whole community is made complicit in programming that is not only objectionable to most of the community but which promotes adult entertainers to youth.  If we took the public funds out of it we would still object to the programming but we would have nobody to object to except a private entity holding the events possibly by withholding our business from those places. This might not matter to businesses that are situated in the gayborhood. I am sure they would be supported locally. We did ask our city council and mayor if any other venues were explored for DQSH and we got no response. The mission of Mass Resistance/Houstonis to stop drag queen story hours in our city.

WR– Drag Queen Storytelling Hour is a huge success at the Harvey Milk San Francisco Library. In fact, there have been no problems. What would you like to share with the parents that are taking their children and thoroughly enjoying it?

TS – I understand that people are taking their kids to this for the message of inclusivity and diversity.  However, I would again state that children deserve better role models than drag queens and introducing children to differences organically is best. I also would say that LGBTQ youth are intelligent and worthy of the dignity and respect of any other youth and I believe it is setting the bar too low to hold drag queens out as role models to any youth given what the culture is mostly about. All youth deserve better, even LGBTQ youth.  I also have observed that the parents seem to be having the most fun at these events. Perhaps organizing a night out for the adults might be an idea. My kids have a transgender parent and we never needed a drag queen to read them a story to help the kids understand their dad’s identity. Children do not have jobs and it seems that our society is giving them the job of validating adults in their various identities and orientations.  As for children who feel they are LGBT, they will figure those things out without a drag queen story hour.  Drag queens are not professional licensed therapists or experts in gender dysphoria and should not be the ones explaining this to children. If parents think that drag queens are the ambassadors of love, diversity, and acceptance they should have a look at the drag community’s mean girl culture and cutthroat rivalry. Drag queens do not come across as the most diverse group of people either.  They are very unaccepting of those who do not think as they do. This is quite apparent by looking at their pages. So, I would advise the parents taking their children to this that drag culture doesn’t really promote what they are seeking to promote to their children.

WR –  If the public wants to support Mass Resistance/Houston, what do they need to do?

TS – The best way to get involved with Mass Resistance is through the national website www.massresistance.org. The Houston Chapter has a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MassResistanceHouston/.

WR – You’ve checked out my fan pages on FB; Ryan Gosling & Tom Hardy. Which one do you like best?

TS – Ryan Gosling… for aesthetics, primarily.

—

IN ADDITION,

I also reached out to two very special professional female impersonators who have actually made a living from Drag and have garnered multiple entertainment awards for their talents:

Introducing Larry Edwards/Tina Turner/Hot Chocolate and Jery F. Kohl Faulkner/Tasha Kohl.

I met these two Masters of Illusions in 1981 at the iconic Houston gay dance club, The Copa Disco, at the intersection of Richmond & Kirby.

Larry and Jery are two powerhouse Drag Artists that have taken the Art of Drag to a fierce pro level that very few can attain; Example: RuPaul.

Larry Edwards puts it simple:

“The point I would like to make is not all Female Impersonators know how to carry themselves in front of children…  but, if it’s done correctly, with a well-respected Drag Queen, who is cautious of her language around children… I fully support it.”

WR– Ryan Gosling or Tom Hardy?

LE– Ryan Gosling… Tom Hardy is a bit too rough around the edges for me.

Jery F. Kohl Faulkner spells it with love:

“You know…I haven’t had any personal experience with this particular thing. However, I think that anything that opens our minds and broadens our horizons is a GOODthing. I think it’s wonderful that children understand early on in life how important it is to find ourselves and utilize our creativity with abandon. To not be afraid to be DIFFERENT.

WR – Ryan Gosling or Tom Hardy?

JF – Ryan.

My personal perspective:

Hey! Everyone has an opinion and everyone should be heard. I think DQSH is a wonderful and enriching idea for children from elementary to high school. I wish I had had the program when I was in school. It would have made life a lot more fun and glamorous.

On a serious note, I will also add that I am highly disappointed with the Houston Public Library Communications Department for remaining silent when approached for comment. Your silence speaks volumes.

Very Independent Filmmaking – What to do when you are not filming…

It’s October and L.A. is on fire.

The Santa Anas are blowing, it’s 98 degrees and the Halloween decorations are all melting. Also, I just bought a clawfoot bathtub off Craigslist that someone painted silver and used in an Iggy Azalea music video…

So that’s my Thursday and heading into the weekend I have no filming, which is a bit of a break since it’s been back to back weekends for the past three months…all a blur of locations and wardrobe and finding our way through stories and characters.  Struggling with sound issues and food shortages, clearing broken glass piece by tiny piece from the ground where an actress had to lay dying.  There was also some poop, which I’m convinced was human, but I didn’t tell the actress.

Filmmaking is very glamorous…

This time of year we all tend to slow down.  Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year.  If you can get anything done then you are braver than I!  And yet we are actually filming in December, something quite ambitious, hence my searching Craigslist for bathtubs.  We are making 10 films in 10 months, another challenge with a very special group of people. I will dip in and out of the project in these articles.

But I wanted to talk today about what to do when you are not actually on set.

It seems like a natural place to be for a filmmaker, on set.  But what you do between filming is so important.  I don’t just mean that you have to actually create something to shoot.  I mean you have to fill your world with things that help you get to set.  You have to write, you have to watch and listen and experience, and you have to open your eyes and your heart and live…really, really well.

Living well doesn’t have to mean living expensively.  Living well to me means valuing your time, eating good food, not rushing through every experience to get to the next one.  It means making moments last, wherever you are.  You don’t have to go to the beach every day or museums or parks.  You can have valuable and creatively inspiring experiences in your own home…good lord I just manifested one by emailing a Craigslist add about a random bathtub and I now have it sitting in my living room and I met a couple of lovely guys who I will reach out to when I remodel my bathroom to put the tub in!! Once I buy a house that is!!

Meantime I have a great story about a very old bathtub that was rescued and painted and starred in a music video and then ended up being restored by someone who loves it and returned to a house that it was intended for.  Perhaps that tub will end up in the film we are shooting in December. We do need one for a scene. What an adventure!

I am suddenly inspired to write a film about an object that gets passed along somehow and takes us to different places and different people and different stories on its travels.  Lives get imprinted onto things.  I have loads of antiques and vintage stuff and it all has a story, even within my lifetime.  So now I have another project to work on.

I am also going to take this time to go through some old footage and refresh some of my past films.  I plan on putting together a website for my work and its a good place to show some of my work.  Revisiting passed work shouldn’t be a chore.  We all need to remind ourselves what we can accomplish when we put our mind to it.  Since I’ve been out of the filmmaking loop for the last few years, getting back into the groove of making a world by visiting my old ones feels like a good idea.

I also had a wonderful evening with friends out last week at Choir Choir Choir.  It’s an amazing idea.  Two Canadian guys tour the country going to clubs or theatres or under bridges in downtown L.A., which is where I saw them last year, last week it was at Bootleg Theatre, this great warehouse type space.  Anyway, one plays the guitar, the other conducts, and we all sing.  They split the crowd into sections and we harmonise, overlay like we know what we are doing and it’s amazing…check out this video https://youtu.be/AGRfJ6-qkr4

Just another way to feed your creative monster soul and remind yourself that you are part of an amazing universe full of wonderful like-minded people that yearn for exactly the same things you do…to be a part of something special, to belong to something, to sing great songs with strangers…it’s revelatory and you should go!!

Music and art and literature and film, of course, are what it’s all about, really.  Forget the wars and the politics and the oil and the coal and the darkness, that’s all a distraction from what is real.  Why do we work so hard to make money to spend on…art?  Music and film and clothes and furniture.  It’s all art and it’s all attainable and it’s all a magical road that lead filmmakers to their films.  I’m writing something and working on my feature film still, I need to finish this draft and then see if I’m ready to go into pre-production…scary…exciting.  But being off set doesn’t mean I’m off.  It just means I’m free to get ready for the next big thing….

Caltech Presents “Perla Batalla in The House of Cohen”

“Perla Batalla in The House of Cohen” at Caltech Beckman Auditorium is located at 332 S. Michigan Avenue, Pasadena.

Leonard Cohen is the world’s poet. His death in 2016 was a pain felt everywhere and his songs have added solace and meaning and grace to all our lives…they still do.

Perla Batalla has a unique connection to him and his work.  She was one of his rather iconic backup singers for many years and toured with him extensively.  It was Cohen who encouraged her to develop and record her own music, in fact.  Now, with this tour of his beautiful songs, Perla Batalla is saying “thank you and I love you,” and it’s stunning.

dsc00380

Perla Batalla is a gloriously rich mixture of backgrounds and she brings them with her to the stage, with her gorgeous voice full of love, life, mournfulness and joy.  It’s a heady combination and one that works to perfection with Cohen’s particular gifts.

Between songs, she tells tales of her life with him.  Anecdotes from both their lives and the meaning behind the songs she selected to sing.  “Bird on a Wire,” “Hallelujah,” “Suzanne,” “The Sisters of Mercy,” “So Long Marianne,” “Famous Blue Raincoa – all the very best and most heartbreaking of Cohen’s songs.  She performs them with very much her own arrangements, slower than he sang them, and with passion, nuance and operatic range.  The band is like melodic angels around her, just incredible musicians providing vocals when needed and phenomenal piano, bass guitar, percussion and acoustic guitar and beautiful oud…something to be heard to be believed!

99b1049642d3b8f337dc2161c0aeb816

It was a wonderful evening spent with artists of the highest caliber all deeply committed to giving Leonard Cohen’s songs the attention they so dearly deserve.

He was a god amongst us and Perla Batalla tends to his songs with the kind of reverence and love that only one he loved and shared so much with ever could.  She is truly a revelation.

If you miss him, as we all do, then go to her website and see where and when you can attend a show, Drive, fly, take a train…do whatever you need to do, but get there.

Waide Riddle readings

About “One Day”
Told from an aging man’s point of view. The changes of life are often times melancholy and sad.

Why did you write this particular poem?

“The sadness of current events surrounding us day to day… it came to me … taking my daily walks through the streets of L.A., West Hollywood, Hollywood, North Hollywood and Studio City. I see so much of the city’s past not cared about any more. Neighborhoods removed to make room for developers’ greed. A new generation that doesn’t seem to ever be present, or want to be. A press and media that seems to want to weaponize against the very people it’s supposed to be serving. “One Day” you wake up and you see the mess… and it’s over!”

About Waide Riddle

Waide Riddle is an award-winning author & screenwriter with more than 30 awards to his credit. Many of his stories and poems are archived at UCLA Library of Special Collections, Poets House/NYC & Simon Wiesenthal Center/Museum of Tolerance. His Audiobooks “The Chocolate Man: A Children’s Horror Tale,” “Wicked Willows,” “Midnight on 6th Street” and “The Night Elvis Kissed James Dean” are Amazon best-sellers. Waide’’s screenplay, “Dear Tom Hardy: I Love You,” has amassed over 20 international awards in Feature Screenplay Division. He is managed by ATN Entertainment in Hollywood. When Waide is not writing, he loves to DJ his library of classic TOP 40 music collection! He loves to brag about his over-6000 Oldies from the 1950s-60s-70s-80s & 90s! 6 Best Money-Saving Apps for Students

Life in college can be hectic and chaotic, and the fact that students are often in dire financial straits does not make things easier.

In addition to essay writing, plagiarism issues, completing your homework on time and preparing for exams and tests you have to constantly think about how to get things cheap, what to do to earn an extra buck and how to prepare for the day when you will have to pay back your student loan. In such an environment, every little bit of help you can get is a godsend. In this article, we will cover some of the best apps that will help you start saving money today.

TUN

TUN exists for the sole purpose of helping the USA students save and keep afloat throughout college. It tells you about all the local discounts aimed at students, shows how you can save on buying textbooks and get rewards on your purchases. If you have an outgoing personality, it can even point out for you some free events in your locality.

Fastweb

Fastweb is a service for those who not just look for ways to save money, but also to get a scholarship. With its app, you get access to the largest online database of scholarships, organize them, see which you are eligible for and decide if you would like to try and write a paper to get this or that one. Simply create a Fastweb account, download the app for free and check out which scholarships you qualify for.

Squirrel

Whether you live in the UK or somewhere else, you need a budgeting app, and Squirrel seems like it was custom made for students. With its help, you will be able to quickly separate the money you need to pay bills, to put into savings and what you can spend to see the exact amounts you have to deal with each month. This way, when you suddenly find yourself in need of placing an order with a writing service, you will not find yourself saying, “Can you write essay for me fast, please,” only to discover that you have already spent all your money this month.

UConnection

Now, if you are someone who believes that being in college should not prevent you from having a good time, then this app is for you. UConnection serves as your guide to food and drinks offers aimed specifically at college students. With its help, all the best deals, special offers, and student discounts are yours to choose from.

RoverTown

How often have you found yourself going through your pockets only to say in exasperation, “Don’t you remember me from the last time? I seem to have left my student ID at home today” when you try to get a discount in your favorite store. RoverTown allows you to keep track of all your favorite businesses and get notifications about their special offers for students in real time. There is no reason to carry your student ID around as well – your phone is more than enough.

GasBuddy

If you get about in a car, you know that gas prices can constitute a significant portion of the expenses, and knowing where to get it cheaper becomes more crucial as you move around more. GasBuddy simplifies this task, saving both your time and money – it shows you the cheapest gas prices in a 50-mile radius, meaning that you will always be able to buy gas at a bargain, as long as you refill in time.

These are some of the best money-saving apps students can use – and which did you try out for that purpose?

Actors Pro Expo APE

Actors often ask how can they learn more about what they can do here in Los Angeles, and where they can find resources.

Meet Jonathan Strickland

***

We’ve always said, “NoHo is only as great as its people.” This mantra will never change.

We love it when Instagram gives us glimpses into some awesome NoHo folks who do interesting things. So we’ve decided to feature these amazingly creative North Hollywood residents and business owners. The neighborhood has worked hard for 20 years to build and maintain a strong creative, arts community and appreciate local residents who add a unique touch. Afterall, it’s our job as a the NoHo Arts District nieghborhood to #KeepNoHoArtsy!

Let’s give a huge NoHo hello to Jonathan Strickland. He turned his love of something into an art form…and business.  We like to call him Jonathan the NoHo Plant Whisperer, and we’re glad he’s in the neighborhood.

You’re a sound engineer. Tell us more about that. (Do plants really like music?)

I am a freelance sound engineer that works from my small home studio in NoHo and also out of different recording studios around town. I mostly work on post sound for TV and film and with music producers and singer songwriters. For the last few months or so I’ve been playing music for my plants in the mornings. I was playing them Bach, Beethoven and other classical music and I didn’t really notice a difference until last month I switched things up and started playing them Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire and Bill Withers. My plants love them! They’ve all been growing and thriving ever since I made the switch to soul music.

You have other projects in the works. Want to highlight them?

Yes I’m currently working on an EP for Caleb Wilson, a producer, singer/songwriter and also a documentary that will be available on HBO later this fall. I can’t say what the doc is until it’s out unfortunately but I’m still excited none the less.

How did you get started with plants?

I first got started with plants when I saw and Dragon Ball Z movie in theaters and the preview was a PSA about food deserts and learning to garden. I knew from that moment I wanted to help end them, especially in black communities where they are needed most. So I bought a bunch of plants and herbs and tried to start growing with no actual know how.

What was your first plant?

I didn’t buy just one plant when I started, I bought about 10 or 15 of them. I bought some herbs, a majesty palm, a monstera, tradescantia, snake plant, asparagus fern, dracaena marginata and compacta, a cabbage palm, a peace lily and a pothos… I killed ALL of them except the monstera and the pothos, which I still have today.

Do you have a favorite type of plant?

My current favorites are the Calathea Warscewiczii, Silver Pothos and Dumb Cane.

What’s the easiest to grow? The hardest?

Pothos and snake plants are probably the easiest to grow and can take the most neglect so I usually suggest those to any of my friends just starting out. I have major struggles with all my Calatheas and Cissus Discolor. It’s mostly because they are tropical plants they need a moist environment and Los Angeles is a desert so they need a lot of extra care and attention.

Tips for growing plants successfully in an apartment?

My number one tip for growing plants in your apartment is to make sure that you are not over watering your them. Overwatering is the number one mistake that most new plant parents make. I ended up buying a pH,light and moisture meter to determine when a plant needs water or anything else. By using this it allowed me to gain a better understanding of all my plants and their watering cycles. The other thing is light. A lot of plants require different amounts of light. Some can take full sunlight and others only need partial or low light. Group the ones that have similar needs together, for instance I’ll keep my tropicals in my mini greenhouse because it keeps the moisture that they need in.

Will you grow your own food? If yes, what are some of the hardships of doing that in an apartment?

I first started with basil, ginger, thyme, rosemary, cilantro and a couple others. I am looking to grow a bunch of different types of leafy greens as well as herbs and tomatoes. The thing I’ve found most challenging growing in my apartment is controlling the climate. I live in an older building with no insulation or central air so if it’s 90° outside, my apartment is 100°. Also the weather fluctuations can be frustrating. It’s easier to heat the place in the winter than cool it in summer.

What’s your favorite part about living here?

My favorite thing about living in North Hollywood is being so close to the action. I enjoy being around other creatives. There are a bunch of shops and restaurants and other cool things that pop up here too.

What would you like to see in NoHo?

I would like to see a community garden started out here. The closet one I know of is the Sepulveda Garden Center and getting over there can be a chore. We need one for the local community who actually live and work here.

Jonathan has taken his love (and gift) for plants and will launch Du Jardin Noir, his online boutique store that sells plant accessories and decor, at the end of the month.  Remember, it all starts with an idea. Thanks for doing your part to #KeepNoHoArtsy (and green).

Theatre 68 Presents “Death with Dignity…Comes in a Milkshake “

Written by Sam Henry Kass. Directed by Ronnie Marmo.

Sam Henry Kass has premiered quite a few of his rather unique plays at Theatre 68, and Ronnie Marmo has been instrumental in bringing them to the stage.

In this, his latest fascinating opus, Ronnie directs.  The play is set in a therapist’s office and follows the unstable and tortured souls of three patients and one drop-in.

The first patient’s session is interrupted unceremoniously by a clearly narcissistic second,  vying shamelessly and pathetically for the therapist’s attention.  The third patient is apparently performing in a play at the neighboring theatre and the fourth, although displaying obvious psychological distress, turns out to the therapist’s teenage son. What teenager doesn’t seem to be in need of constant psychiatric help?

thumbnail IMG 4289aa

It’s a riotous cacophony of breakdowns and breakthroughs, of outbursts and frustration fueled crises of the mind, heart and soul.

The therapist bravely juggles them all as they storm the room, determined to out need each other.  They are desperate, pushy, demanding and obtuse and she is nimble, clever and never overwhelmed.

All these psychosis, their origin notwithstanding, point us in the same direction – loneliness.  In a society built around numbers always bigger than one, it’s easy to see how individuals can get lost, forgotten and left behind.  Loneliness and isolation lead them to fear, confusion and anger.  Isn’t it the beginning of all our troubles?  Wondering if we are beyond, or outside or completely separate from everyone else.  These characters are echos of what we all feel in our darkest moments.  They are us manifested on stage, full of drama and vitriol and sadness. Blaming everyone and everything else for their numerous bad decisions and blunders.

thumbnail IMG 3737a

Sam Henry Kass is the kind of writer who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.

He isn’t afraid to open up the can and shake out all the worms that hide inside.  It’s poetry really, watching them all wriggle and squirm under the microscope of an audience, a stage and some lights.  We are all there together just trying to figure it all out.  It’s brilliant.  It’s sad, strange, fourth-wall-shattering and brilliant.  Under the direction of Ronnie Marmo, the actors are able to explore their madness and their pain and the audience is able to laugh with them, not at them.  It’s an excellent way to get past the gruesome similarities of our own dark souls.

Zed Fest Film Festival 2019 Hopes To Discover the Cult Movies of the Future…

The 10th Annual ZED Fest Film Festival 2019 returns to the NoHo Arts District November 6 – 10, celebrating Horror, Sci-Fi, Art House filmmakers and screenwriters at Laemmle NoHo 7 and the Lankershim Arts Center.

You’ve heard of “B-Movies” right? The low budget second movie in a double feature.

Movies that were bad, or so bad they’re good. Movies that demand multiple viewings and you can’t help but quote. You’ve probably have never heard of “Z-Movies” have you? The Z-Movies (or as we like to call them “Zed-Flicks”) were usually the independent micro-budget with unknown cast members, and made by filmmakers that had dedication to complete their films. They were the early incarnation of Grindhouse and Drive In Flicks. “Bs” (Actually many of what is considered an old B-Movie today were actually “Zs” back when they first came out.) In The Zed Fest’s opinion the “Zs” are better.

“We will be screening the best films from 2019 sent to us from all over the world. We founded Zed Fest Film Festival to encourage and support independent low- and big- budget filmmakers who work in the horror, suspense, science fiction, drama, action, adventure, and art house genres. The festival screens feature-length, short films, super short films and student shorts. Our films are fun, artistic and innovative. Come celebrate independent films with us!.” – Wendy Medrano, Zed Fest Festival Director

Things to do in Hollywood

There’s no question that Hollywood is one of the most sought-after places in the world, and for good reason.

Not only is it the center of the film and entertainment industry, but it also has so much more to offer.

Though Tinseltown is popular due to the glitz and glamour that surrounds it, there’s more to it than movie stars and celebrities. Consider these five adventures to keep things interesting on your next trip to Hollywood.

1. Take a short hike towards the Hollywood sign

The Hollywood sign is without a doubt the most iconic landmark of Los Angeles. It’s the first thing that comes to mind when we talk about Hollywood.

Built in the 1920s, the famous sign portrays big, white letters that are visible throughout LA and is considered one of California’s most protected landmarks. Though no one is allowed to visit the site, visitors can hike their way fairly close to it.

2. Take a walk down memory lane via the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Equally popular with people around the world is the Hollywood Walk of Fame where the names of important celebrities are immortalized through a set of brass stars.

With more than 2500 names laid out in the sidewalks of Hollywood Boulevard, the Hollywood Walk of Fame is considered a big part of American cultural history that attracts millions of visitors every year, all year long.

Considered a public space, the Walk of Fame is open 24/7, giving you all-day access to one of Hollywood’s greatest treasures.

3. Participate in a scavenger hunt

If you want to visit some of Hollywood’s finest spots while having a ton of fun, how about participating in a scavenger hunt to spice things up?

Whether you’re with family, friends, or colleagues, companies like cityHunt allow you to enjoy the rest of Hollywood through a variety of games and scavenger hunts that are guaranteed to give you a memorable time.

If you’re interested in organizing a scavenger hunt for your next visit to Hollywood, you can contact them via their website.

4. Have fun exploring Universal Studios

No trip to Hollywood would be complete without a visit to the world-famous film studio and theme park, Universal Studios.

There are just too many great things to be missed if you fail to visit it. From the gorgeous movie sets, the out-of-this-world costumes, the dazzling special effects show, and the magnificent rides, it’s not surprising that a tour of Universal Studios will always be part of every Hollywood visitor’s itinerary.

5. Visit the Hollywood Museum

Apart from the glitz and glamour, Hollywood is also known for its rich history, and there’s no better way to learn more about it than by a quick visit to the Hollywood Museum.

With four history-packed floors housing some of the largest collections of movie memorabilia, the place is truly a sight to behold. The museum features remarkable exhibits that don various costumes, props, and photos from classic films that have left their mark in history.

From Marilyn Monroe’s infamous white dress to Elvis Presley’s personal bathrobe, the Hollywood Museum will certainly give you an awesome “blast from the past” experience.

The Group Rep presents “BARRYMORE”

The Group Rep presents “BARRYMORE” – One more great evening Upstairs at the Group Rep. Written by William Luce.  Directed by Robert Benedict.

John Barrymore, once a stage and screen idol, has been rehearsing for his hopeful comeback and revival of his epic 1920 role as RICHARD III on Broadway.  “BARRYMORE,” directed by and starring Robert Benedict, is a comedy of the declining ability of an aging actor, and a life too-well lived.

RobertBenedict photoDougEngalla 0723

Now it is 1942 and just months before his death.  Barrymore, portrayed by Robert Benedict, reminisces about good and questionable periods of his life, loves, and career, always with a drink in his hand, and most of the time stumbling across his room trying to remember his lines in the play calling out to Frank (Todd Andrew Ball) ,his stage manager, for his next line.  We hear Frank, but don’t see him as he tries to make Barrymore focus to get him back on track.  Naughty jokes abound, and Benedict gives us a bittersweet portrait of this once famous actor with excellence.  John Barrymore came from stage and screen royalty with sister Ethel Barrymore and brother Lionel Barrymore just as, or more famous than John. This once great actor is now realizing his decline.  He knows how important his performance is.  Will he be able to give his best?

Blaqhaus Review – NoHo

I visited a local hang out, Blaqhaus, which as it turns out, is just around the corner from my own haus…

Blaqhaus is a very pleasing blend of southern style American cuisine in a modern, slightly polished, very laid back R & B/HipHop eatery with a large patio and huge sliding doors that open up the dining room to the balmy North Hollywood evening air.

Arriving as the kitchen opened I decided to go for it and open with a cocktail, of which they have an ample selection.  Mine was the Summer Ours, a lovely tequila-based drink with some triple sec, fresh strawberries, lemon and muddled basil…gorgeous!

thumbnail Screen Shot 2019 10 17 at 6.08.21 PM

Then the blaqberry & pecan salad.  Mixed berries macerated and strewn about the musky arugula with plenty of good feta, sweet petit tomatoes and a very generous amount of excellent pecans.  The dressing is nicely tart and the portions large – a really excellent choice and enough for a meal in and of itself!

thumbnail Screen Shot 2019 10 17 at 6.09.11 PM

I chose for my main dish the Nipsy Blue Burger with fries, in his honor, naturally.

This is such a delicious sandwich.  The burger is crumbly and delicious, no grease, no mess, all lightly seasoned, good quality meat.  Just the right amount of blue cheese, a little jalapeno and some bacon jam…yum.  The bun was a great surprise too, warm, fresh, a little crusty on the outside, light and tasty on the inside, just enough to hold the whole sandwich together, not too much to overwhelm…very successful!

The fries where also really good.  Crunchy, soft and tasty, great seasoning. I love lots of pepper and this was perfect for me.

thumbnail IMG 7289

I also got a side order of Mac N Cheese Bites w/ House made Sunflower Pesto Sauce…because of course, I did.  This is a delicious little number.  The baked mac and cheese is creamy and lightly cheesy and the outside crunches to perfection with a little heat. They really know how to make food crunch here, which is not as easy as its sounds.  The sauce that comes with this appetizer is a creamy sunflower pesto. Salty, nutty, creamy, tangy, with some shaved gouda on top…loved it!

So overall a great meal!  The service was warm and friendly, the music not too loud, the customers young and older. They all seemed pleased with their food and relaxed.…always a good sign!

This is a great Northern NoHo space. Serving those of us that live above Oxnard, in the rapidly developing adjacent to the forthcoming NoHo West neighborhood.

Blaqhaus is comfortable and polished, casual yet still date night material.  The food is really excellent, interesting and I gather they are expanding the menu in the new year to include a lot more southern-inspired food. So I definitely will be back!!!

Judy – There would be no Judy without Renee Zellweger

Review of Judy, 2019

Judy, with an Oscar-worthy performance by Renee Zellweger at its core, covers a period in the great Judy Garland’s life when she was considered basically unemployable and uninsurable.

In her last year, Judy Garland received an offer to perform in London. Prior to this engagement, Garland was “on the move,” sometimes going from hotel to hotel (especially ones where she hadn’t exhausted their goodwill), occasionally playing clubs—all the while trying to remain a parent in “good standing.” Which can be hard when you’re occasionally stealing out of hotels (with the children) wearing clothes on top of clothes to disguise the fact that they are checking out without paying the bill. She also managed to continue both her losing streak with men, this time in the form of a young would-be dealmaker Mickey Deans—and her long, losing battle with alcohol and other drugs. It’s this late stage Judy that forms the basis of Judy, written by Tom Edge and Peter Quilter (based on Quilter’s play End of the Rainbow ). Whereas the play is entirely set in 1969, the screenwriters supply flashbacks to Garland’s early days at MGM, where we see the seeds being planted for the self-destructive behavior that was to come. These changes have sparked some discussion, but I think these add to a more complete picture of Judy. (Notice how her fans, of which I am one, continue to relate to her.)

Though the film is fairly well-written, with some fine supporting performances (Rufus Sewell and Finn Wittrock as Garland’s ex Sid Luft and prospective husband Mickey Deans respectively), there would be no Judy without Renee Zellweger’s superb, dynamic, touching portrayal. Zellweger brings out the many dimensions of Judy: her humor, her intelligence, her caustic wit, her vulnerability, and her self-awareness which goes hand in hand with a capacity for self-deception and denial. To top it off, the lady can sing. ‘Tis true, it’s not Judy Garland’s voice, but Zellweger captures Judy’s unmatched onstage energy (songs performed live by the way), her showmanship, the way she throws herself entirely into every song. She also perfectly captures the way Garland can caress a ballad and bring an air of intimacy to an entire theater. And if there is a more heartbreaking moment in movies this year than Garland/Zellweger’s late night call to her daughter, I’ll believe it only when I see it.

Three Perfect Days in Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone is “The Granddaddy” of our National Parks, featuring 50% of the world’s geysers in this 2.2-million-acre space.

And, it spans three states: Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. Its sheer size along with the literal coexistence you have with the wildlife all around it, puts it in a league of its own. However, with the last six years of the park seeing 3-4 million more visitors than the previous six years, Yellowstone can be challenging to maneuver through and check off everything you want to do and see on your wish list.

This article will give you guidance on how to do three perfect days in Yellowstone National Park. Ninety-five per cent of people who visit the park never get more than ½ mile away from their car, so I’ve included some hikes you can do as well to fully appreciate the wonder of Yellowstone.

As much as I love adventure travel, I do prefer to have a roof over my head and a comfortable bed at the end of the day when I visit national parks; and with the non-camping lodges and hotel accommodations options inside the park being extremely expensive, I decided to stay in West Yellowstone, which is about a five-minute drive from the park’s west entrance (One of five entrances into Yellowstone National Park). There are plenty of dining options, gas stations, museums and gift shops here. So, everything you need is accessible right from this location. And with the airport being in West Yellowstone, it is an ideal base if you’re not driving in from another state.

A rustic, historical and yet modern place to consider staying is the Elkhorn Cabins in West Yellowstone. Long before the creation of the National Park Service, Yellowstone Park was watched over and maintained by a division of the United States Army. They lived in the cabins, which are now completely renovated and feature Wi-Fi, large flat screen TVs, private bathrooms and charming electric fireplaces. But the bed headboards and nightstands are made of wood from the original cabins. The front desk staff at Elkhorn is very thoughtful and friendly and there’s always a delicious assortment of refreshments in the lobby for the guests.

Day 1: I recommend heading into the park early each morning to enjoy the sun coming up and the peace and calm before all the crowds and tour buses come. (At the entrance to the park they’ll give you a brochure/map you can use to navigate around. Once the crowds start coming in, a basic rule of thumb is to double the number of miles from location to location to estimate your driving time. For instance, 30 miles = about 60 minutes of driving time.) First up, drive over to Canyon Village and go to the Canyon Village Education Center to see, hear, and learn how the Yellowstone volcano, its geysers and hot springs, and geologic history shape the distribution and abundance of all life found here. Explore these ideas through interactive exhibits, animations, audio-visual productions, and real-time scientific data. Next, follow the signs and drive to the south rim upper and lower falls lookouts.  You’re in the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone area and the views are impressive. Afterwards, a short drive takes you over to the north rim where you can do an easy 2-mile roundtrip hike to Inspiration Point, which juts out from the rest of the canyon wall to offer incredible panoramic views up and down the canyon. It’s always best to hike in groups of 3 or more as noise can help to keep bears at bay. You can purchase bear spray at many locations throughout the park, it’s about $40 to purchase, but know that if you don’t use it, you can’t take it on an airplane when you leave. Alternatively, you can rent it at Canyon Village for about $10 per day. Bear attacks are extremely rare, they are just as afraid of us as we are of them, so the idea is not to startle them. If they hear noise in the distance, they will try to avoid the approaching threat. You can head back to Canyon Village for lunch.

Drive south now towards Lake Village. On the way, stop off and at the Mud Volcano area. There is a boardwalk (about .5 miles long) that takes you in and all around this fascinating area of muddy bubbly hot springs.

A relaxing and scenic way to end your first day in the park is by taking a cruise on Yellowstone Lake. The one-hour sailings leave from the Bridge Bay Marina, and costs about $20 per person. Advance reservations are recommended and you can do that here.

Day 2: Rise and shine, you’ve got a bold and exciting day in Yellowstone National Park ahead of you!  Drive over to Mammoth Hot Springs first, an absolute must-see attraction, almost other worldly. Mammoth Hot Springs has two terrace boardwalks, the Upper and Lower (about 1.5 miles in total). 50 hot springs lie within the area, depositing about 2 tons of calcium carbonate or travertine limestone per day. Next, let’s drive towards Tower-Roosevelt area, go ahead and grab a map of the Tower area day hikes by stopping in at the Tower Ranger Station. After talking with the ranger about current trail conditions and bear activity in the area, go ahead and park up the road at the Roosevelt Lodge.

From here you can hike the 2.8-mile Lost Lake Loop Trail.

This trail has a bit of everything to see such as sagebrush hilltops, waterfowl, wildflowers and beautiful views of lost lake; in fact, what I really like about it is it has a backcountry feel to it without the need for a backcountry permit. Afterwards, grab lunch at the Roosevelt Lodge, a very rustic old west kind of place. Now, drive towards Canyon Village – you are in for a spectacular scenic road trip. (Because of its altitude, the road between tower falls and Canyon Village is closed between mid-October to late May.)  You’ll be driving around 8,000-10,000 ft in altitude past Mount Washburn and Dunraven Pass, take your time and stop off at all the lookout points -the views are simply breathtaking. By the way, this area is actually the giant volcano cauldron of Yellowstone. You do know that Yellowstone National Park is an active super volcano, right? Make sure to plan your trip before it erupts and causes worldwide havoc, ha ha.  Continue driving back towards West Yellowstone and end the day at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center . where you can experience these precious animals up close and personal.

Day3: Of course, no trip to Yellowstone is complete without a visit to the iconic and wonderous Old Faithful! If there’s any attraction you want to try to get to early before the crowds, this is the one. It erupts pretty much every 90 minutes; so, if you just missed it when you arrive, you can walk through the Old Faithful Inn right on site, considered the largest log structure in the world. Next, drive over to the West Thumb Geyser Basin, it’s one of my favorite places in the park, featuring an eye-catching collection of hot springs and bubbling pools with beautiful Lake Yellowstone as the backdrop. There’s about 1 mile of boardwalk to meander in and around and see it and short informational ranger talks about this area’s thermal activity all throughout the day. Afterwards, go grab some lunch at Grant Village Dining Room and take in the 25-minute movie about the massive 1988 Yellowstone fires (about 1.2 million acres burned) at the nearby visitor center. End your Yellowstone experience at the amazing Grand Prismatic Spring, the largest hot springs in the United States, and 3rd largest in the world. Its magnificent turquoise and blue and orange colors are a feast for the eyes. Instead of just walking the boardwalk in and around it, park at Fairy Falls and hike the 1 mile out and back trail up to a lookout point for a wonderful bird’s eye view of Grand Prismatic Springs and Midway Geyser Basin (much better for photos).

Yellowstone is really the epitome of “the great outdoors” and the park inspires awe in travelers from all around the world.  I wish you a wonderful adventure to this one of a kind gem in our national park system.  If you think you’ll be visiting more than one national park over a 12 month period, it makes sense to get an annual pass, which you can order here./

I’ll be organizing a group trip to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons in the spring of 2021. Please let me know if you’ll be interested in joining us.  And you just never know what might walk right by our vehicle while we’re there.

Incremental success equals stacking!

Incremental success equals stacking!  This is a key component in dog training that gets overlooked.

Of course, everyone wants results quickly.  Who wouldn’t want that?  The problem is even though you can make a big difference quickly, the true long-term consistent success comes from stacking!

The key is to start with small expectations, build the muscle memory of completing a new routine, and then add more tasks once you’re consistent.  Want to know something interesting?  The above sentence was originally from an excerpt about self-improvement, with me paraphrasing it a bit.  It’s from an article on developinggoodhabits.com.  It rings equally true for dog training.  Incremental success is everything!  This means teaching a down stay.  Then working on that down stay with low level distractions.  Eventually building up to larger distractions like someone knocking on the door.  Teaching a dog to heel next to you in your driveway before trying to walk your block, then around your block, then the neighborhood, then the park, etc.  Do you see a pattern?

We often really rush the expectations of proofing basic obedience with our dogs.

Proofing means teaching our dogs how to do their basic obedience with different distractions.  It takes weeks and even months to tackle different scenarios with your dog and get to know them in these new scenarios.   I know everyone doesn’t have all the time in the world.  That’s why not giving up and focusing on incremental success is so important.  Think of each small success as a piece of paper.  Now think about the stack of paper you buy for your printer.  Each incremental success is stacking a new habit, creating new muscle memory and is going to end up like those stacks of paper before you know it.  Take some pressure off of yourself and focus on incremental success.  Live in each moment with your dog and stack up more and more good habits.

“Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera”

***

The consummate soul man musician Chris Pierce and veteran writer/director Mark Malone (“Bullet-proof Heart,” “Hoods,” “The Last Ship,” “Dead Heat,” “Law & Order: Criminal Intent”) have combined their many talents) to create an original work for the stage, ”Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera.” This tale is told in 21 songs, following the journey of a fictional street preacher, many years ago in the American Deep South. A story of love, sorrow, earthy humor, and finally, redemption, we accompany Reverend Tall Tree as he plies his trade (leading street revival meetings) in the dusty small towns of the lower Mississippi valley. And then one moonlit night on the road, his life changes -when the Rev-erend finds himself falling in love… with a fallen woman.

“Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera” is a high-energy evening of song played by an all-star quartet com-prised of electric and acoustic guitar, harmonica, upright bass, and drums. In homage to tent revival healing crusades of the early-mid twentieth century, the audience is transformed into a singing, stomp-ing, clapping and sometimes crying “congregation.”

Chris Pierce in
Chris Pierce in “Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera.” Photo by L. Paul Mann.

Chris, you have been performing in Southern California for decades. What is your favorite memory of a performance in NoHo?

CHRIS PIERCE: There are so many memories over the years. For a while, a couple decades ago, I lived in Toluca Lake and remember really digging into the NOHO scene, frequenting shows, jam sessions and supporting fellow artists. My favorite memory perhaps happened in 2017 when I had the chance to perform a song that I co-wrote for the TV show “This is Us” called “We Can Always Come Back to This” at the Television Academy with the Emmy Orchestra for an audience of my peers. That was such a rush and we had the whole crowd on their feet at the end of the per-formance.

Why did you guys write ““Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera?”

MARK MALONE: We both have been lifelong Blues fans and wanted to work to-gether. I saw Chris performing as Reverend Tall Tree in a club in Hollywood and I thought he was the first performer I’d seen in years who was both completely com-pelling and completely authentic singing this kind of music. So often this music is so revered it’s treated like an object in a museum. When I saw Chris perform, I saw an opportunity for the two of us to create music and a story in this idiom that was new. And have it interpreted in a way that would move an audience. (And the audience certainly does move—it’s not unusual to see the audience members jump out of the their seats and start dancing around the theatre.)

CHRIS PIERCE: And so we’ve decided to write something together that would in-vite the audience into an immersive experience of this kind of music as one might experience in a theater, or… a tent revival. Twenty-one songs. A story in two acts. A high-energy singing, stomping, clapping and sometimes crying journey through life and death. With a few laughs along the way.

You’ve performed this several places, including at our local Vitello’s. Why did you choose Molly Malone’s in Hollywood as a venue for your performance of “Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera?”

CHRIS PIERCE: The back room of Molly Malones has a wonderful combination of a small theatre room and a live music venue. The space has so much vibe and we plan to turn it into a full on “Revival” for the show. We really want the audience to feel like the Congregation and are putting a lot of work into turning the room into just that. Also, I have a personal history with the venue dating back to the early 1990s. It’s one of the first venues that hired me as a songwriter on a regular basis. I’ve probably done close to 200 shows there over the years and immediately thought of the Molly Malone’s for “Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera.”

The “art scene” in L.A. is experiencing a renaissance do you think you could have presented a show like this before now?

A: Probably not. The arts/music scene in Los Angeles is really wonderful at the moment, but one of the things that makes it so wonderful is that it’s about the “now.” Little theaters are popping open doing new plays, music venues are doing an enormous amount of original music, galleries are showing local artists— this is not the way it’s always been. This vibrant art scene is something that’s come along rela-tively recently. We’re thrilled to be part of it.

Do you have to be a diehard Blues, Roots, Gospel fan to “get” this show?

MARK MALONE: Absolutely not. In some respects this show is an introduction to the genesis of Blues music as we appreciate it now. Beginning a century ago, Blues absorbed all the music of the time, everything from Gospel to work songs, to Victo-rian parlor songs. Blues absorbed it all and created a new language, terse, laconic and powerfully musical. That musical language is just as powerful and riveting as it’s ever been when.

CHRIS PIERCE: We love this music and humbly offer “Reverend Tall Tree’s Blues Opera” as another tile in the great mosaic of American song.

“Dear Yoko”

Written and Performed by Anzu Lawson.  Developed and Directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson.

Anzu Lawson bares a remarkable resemblance to Yoko Ono, couple that with a really wonderful, deep sense of the artist and phenomenal acting skills and we are presented with Yoko Ono…almost in the flesh.

Through Anzu as Yoko we learn about the parallels between the two women.  Anzu slips in and out of Yoko’s character and in-between Yoko’s own revelations, she tells us about her life in Japan as a child growing up with a sister and a single mother.  Anzu was brought there from the US when her parents split up and her father was awarded custody of her sister.  Her mother fled to Japan with them both, ripping them from their American life, something Anzu missed dearly.

thumbnail Anzu as Yoko3 copy

Her mother entered Anzu in child beauty contests and she began modeling at 14, hanging out with visiting rock bands and ended up a famous Japanese k-pop star.  It was then Anzu’s turn to run away, back to America and unexpected and sudden obscurity…but thankful, absolute freedom.

Family dynamics change so much over the years don’t they?  We hold onto pain and anger until we just can’t remember why we feel them any more.  Needing to let go and forgive is part of Yoko’s journey and it become Anzu’s too.

It’s so fascinating that it was while preparing for this role the Anzu discovered so many of her own hang ups and judgments and life-long perspectives were based on fear and anger and all that stuff that really isn’t important at all.  She found herself as she discovered Yoko, and to watch that unfold on stage is frankly remarkable.

Anzu Lawson is a born storyteller.

Gracefully gifted, funny, smart and totally fearless.  Her Yoko is mesmerizing, powerful and moving.  It’s like an audience with her, full of life and her sorrow and her love.  Anzu’s story is totally her own and her revelations found through her relationship to Yoko are strange and beautiful.  How lucky we are to still have Yoko Ono in the world with all her wisdom and her resilience and her art.  Anzu reminds us that we are all on voyages of self discovery, we all have so much to learn about our lives and our pain and our joy and that is exactly how it should be.

thumbnail Anzu as Yoko4

“Dear Yoko” is a love letter to a women Anzu has never met.  A thank you for Yoko’s unwavering presence and unflinching strength.  It’s a gorgeous glimpse into two lives entwined by circumstance and paralleled by fate.

I absolutely loved it.

The H.E.ART of NoHo

Sunday, October  27

***

The H.E.ART makes their NoHo debut with a creative open house on Sunday, October  27 where children/teens will create a production from start to finish, all in one fun afternoon!

The NoHo motto really should be: “NoHo is only as great as its people.”

The NoHo Arts District is a one-square mile neighborhood that has 20+ theatre, six dance studios, countless recording studios, acting classes every night of the week and so many creative folks making NoHo their home. For the last 20 years, the neighborhood has worked tirelessly to maintain the district as an ARTS district. So it’s a pleasure when an art group with years of industry experience and a love for the arts decides to make NoHo their home. It’s another way we can #KeepNoHoArtsy.

So let’s welcome The H.E.ART to North Hollywood!

What is The H.E.ART?

The H.E.ART is an ackronym for Heartfelt Education through the Arts. Their mission is to provide a healthy, creative environment where aspiring actors, dancers and singers of all ages can feel inspired and empowered to cultivate their talents. As a multicultural performing arts company, The H.E.ART is committed to the development of the diverse youth of Los Angeles.

“At The H.E.ART, we create an experience – a safe place for students to come and learn the performing arts – whether they mean to seek a career in the industry or simply to be able to express themselves creatively, sharing and being creative amongst other like-minded kids, gaining the tools for self-confidence, leadership and camaraderie is very important now that our schools are not funding the arts nor impressing the need for healthy communication.” – Eartha Robinson, Founder, Dance & Movement Instructor

The stellar artistic team is Earth Robinson, founder, dance & movement Instructor, and Vernée Watson, acting instructor. We like to call them the dynamic duo because of their immense repertoire of experience on stage, television and in film. They are experts in their craft. Their dedication to their young artists’ development is just what the NoHo Arts District needs.

We asked them questions about their unique program, arts education process, and what will be at their upcoming open house.

Tell us more about the open house schedule.

We’re excited about our open house. We’ll be starting with a meet and greet at 2:00pm then we’ll split into three groups and begin to rotate through our three classes – voice, dance/movement and acting – to make sure everyone learns a little something but also and very importantly, we want everyone to have fun on this day. We’ll have refreshments, raffles, t-shirt give-a-ways and a Scholarship Award, – everyone will know what our program entails and we’ll have a little showcase presentation at the end. Most importantly, we really want to see a lot of kids and their families all meet each other, experience a day with The H.E.ART and have a wonderful afternoon – it’s going to be a lot of fun!!

Why did you decide to move to NoHo Arts District?

A quick response would be – Our Love For Theatre!

We actually began with a non-profit school many years ago at this very location, (many might remember The Robinson Project Performing Arts Academy) so for us it’s more like we’re returning home. NoHo was always on our radar, due to its high proportion of theatres and dance studios, etc. along with historically being an artistic enclave in general. Our new location at MKM Cultural Arts Centre is right in the centre of things, with easy access to public transport and parking. There are so many wonderful little shops, etc. around here and it really has a bohemian ambience that feeds creativity. We love it!

Tell us more about a typical day at the studio.

Our Lab 1 (Ages 5 – 10) and LAB 2 (Ages 11 and up) start their respective days with floor exercises – warm-up routines to strengthen for the physical requirements in all three of our core disciplines – dance/movement, acting and voice. We rotate the students through these classes during the process using a unique, integrated approach that allows us to bring all of these elements together in a showcase/recital at the end of the course. Our students may not intend to enter the Industry, but they’re learning life lessons that they will carry with them – self-confidence, creative thinking, social interaction, etc.

How would you like to see your studio grow?

We are looking at our five-year plan and would foresee increasing the number of days our classes are available into a full-time program and expanding our current ‘triple threat’ curriculum to include music, visual arts and backstage theatre tech. We want to reach as many future artists as possible and uncover those gems hidden in under-served communities.

Teaching kids the beauty of dance, acting, voice and stage craft is rewarding, right?

Yes! We’ve had some wonderful successes, students who have booked onto stage plays, commercials, TV series and webisodes and continue to grow as artists. But I think our greatest successes come from seeing those students who come into our program and they’re shy, not knowing what to say or being able to express their minds – like amazing little caterpillars that then emerge into glorious butterflies, growing with a heightened self-esteem along with social and learning abilities. Success can be seen when parents come to us and thank us for helping their kids grow and be comfortable in who they are. It takes a village, after all and that’s a very rewarding place to be!

If You Want to Be Taken Seriously As an Actor, You Have to Do This…

If you thought it was hard to be an actor in the past, it’s even harder now… especially if you want to be taken seriously.

With the evolution of social media, people are becoming stars simply from making videos playing tricks on their grandmother and recording it on their phones… that’s not acting, that’s pure luck. If you want to be a serious actor, you have to take your career seriously, and becoming a YouTube star isn’t the way you do it.

If you look at the great actors of the past and present, you’ll be able to find out that they went to acting school or took acting classes, used all the money they had to pay for those acting classes, and jumped on every opportunity they had to be taken seriously as an actor. Those are the things you have to do to not only make others take you seriously as an actor but to make yourself believe that you’re an actor. That’s not saying to go homeless in your efforts but you have to make certain sacrifices to get to where you want to go.

Acting… It’s Not as Easy as It Looks

As a child, everyone has probably had dreams and aspirations of being an actor or actress. Even as adults, you’ll be watching your favorite show and find yourself saying “I can do that!” But if it really came down to it and you had an opportunity to act, could you really do it? Acting isn’t as easy as people think it is. To be an actor, it takes a special type of person. You have to be determined, able to handle rejection, and willing to work hard for what you want.

The first thing you need to get established in your mindset is that becoming a good actor shouldn’t solely be for the intent of getting famous… it should be for perfecting your craft; getting famous is a perk. Secondly, acting is not cheap. If you want to become an actor, get ready to spend some money. From headshots to demo reels, you’re going to need to put yourself out there some kind of way to get recognition. Remember, it takes money to make money, even in the world of acting.

If you’re an aspiring actor or actress looking to make it in the world of acting, you first need to take yourself and your acting skills seriously in order for others to take you seriously as an actor. Take a look at the things you need to do to be taken seriously as an actor.

You Need to Take Professional Headshots

The keyword here is professional. In a world where almost everything can be done from your phone, headshots need to be taken professionally. Taking headshots that are not professionally done just shows casting directors that YOU don’t take your acting career seriously, so why should they?

Now, getting headshots done isn’t going to be cheap so before getting them done, you want to make sure that you look amazing in your photos. A headshot is literally just that… it’s a shot of your face. So, in knowing that, the first thing casting directors will look at is your smile. If your smile isn’t attractive to acting standards, don’t take your headshots until you’ve got that Hollywood smile.

Again, acting isn’t cheap but one of the best investments you can make in your acting career is to correct your smile. There are dentists out there that will be able to provide the dental services you need at an affordable price, you just have to know where to look. Once you have your “picture perfect” smile, you can then do all the other cosmetic enhancements like hair and makeup to be ready for your closeup.

Get Your Acting Resume Together

Okay, so an acting resume isn’t like your typical resume when applying to “regular” jobs. You don’t need to put your time spent working at a shoe store or grocery store… your acting resume needs to strictly be about your experience as an actor. If you’re just starting out and don’t have any acting experience, start auditioning at your local community theater.

This is a great way to get acting experience and a great way to get exposure in your community as an aspiring actor. If there aren’t any openings for a role in a community play, ask about volunteering to help with the play. Theaters are always looking for volunteers to help. This will at least get your foot in the door and keep you in the know about upcoming shows and roles. Even if you volunteer, that’s something to put on your acting resume… you have to start somewhere, right?

Enroll in Acting Classes

Enrolling in acting classes is what’s going to help you improve your acting skills. The acting coaches in these classes are going to teach you skills you may already know about but you’re definitely going to learn skills you didn’t know about so it’s well worth the investment. While in those classes, the best thing you can do for yourself is to practice what you learned in class, at home.

There are several different acting exercises you can do at home that will help you hone in on your craft. This is a great way to improve your acting skills without being judged or feeling like everyone is looking at you. By doing acting exercises at home, it will better prepare you to feel more comfortable acting in front of a crowd.

Audition, Audition, Audition!

Auditions are the whole reason for the classes you enrolled in and the headshots you took. Auditions are ultimately your shot at getting the role. Being on the outside looking in, it’s easy for someone to say go for it! But auditioning can be quite nerve-racking but the more you audition, the more you’ll have the courage to stand in front of crowds, according to breakingcharactermagazine.com.

It’s definitely not an easy task but the more you audition for different productions, you’ll learn so much about yourself… how you feel comfortable preparing and you may even come up with your own good luck rituals. The point is, everything you’ve done prior to auditions is what lead you to your auditions, so you can’t let fear hold you back from your dreams.

Remember, you want people to take you seriously as an actor… well, get on that stage and give them a performance they’ll remember!

Fuzzy Bottoms Theater Company Presents “Red Meat”

Written and Directed by April Littlejohn.

Hang on to your britches ladies and gentlemen and be sure to come prepared with a plastic poncho if you plan on sitting in the first or second row of this whacky and hilarious show!

The Fuzzy Bottoms Theater Company has put together a jaw dropping, entertaining, and bloody satire that is sure to appetize your need for music, comedy and horror. The story follows Kaitlyn, a production assistant with a local news station, who leads a rather unsatisfying life working a dead-end job where she is under appreciated, has a boss who sexually harasses her on a daily basis, and puts up with a self-absorbed boyfriend that uses her only for sex.

The show is interwoven with song and dance but it’s definitely not a full blown musical. The dance numbers are sprinkled throughout the show at just the right moments adding a fun break to some of the more grotesque scenes. The whole production is carefully choreographed as the characters navigate their way between scenes giving it a very SNL type feel.

The theatre is small but the actors and ensemble cast do a fantastic job of handling the physicality, dance numbers, and fight scenes that take place within the space. Kaitlyn goes through a nice character arch from being a girl that gets pushed around, to a girl who takes no beef from anyone (no pun intended), beginning with her boss, who she accidentally kills in self-defense after he attacks her. In a panic, she hides his corpse in her apartment and ends up eating it. This leads her to discover the truth about her parents being vegan cannibals with a long history of devouring dead corpses.

Matters only get worse when Kaitlyn gets visited by the ghosts of the people she eats. Now there is an investigation for the people who have gone missing and she falls in love with the lead detective on the case. The ghosts keep reappearing in her subconscious to torment her but, ultimately, they end up helping her come to terms with who she really is. This show is no easy feat and definitely requires serious comedic chops, which all the actors do a superb job of. This production is a roller coaster ride with lots of twists and turns that are unexpected but the ride is definitely worth it.

If you’re looking for a fun night of laughs, don’t miss your chance to get tickets to this show!!

Knot Free Productions Present “IN TROUSERS”

Book, Lyrics and Music by William Finn.  Directed by Ryan O’Connor.

“Love me for what I am, not what I try to be.  Love me for what I am, someone imperfectly me.”  — W. Finn

In this prequel to “March of the Falsettos” and “Falsettoland,” the fast paced “IN TROUSERS” at the Lounge Theatre in Hollywood is a blast of original music from author and composer William Finn.

These three pieces are known as the “Marvin Trilogy,” with “IN TROUSERS” focusing on his teen years and the realization that he prefers men to women.

5 IMG 3470

The three most important women in Marvin’s life are the focus here, and the “faster than a speeding bullet” music and lyrics bring us at the center of Marvin’s struggle and acceptance of his sexuality and identity.  The cast is extremely adept and accomplished with Braxton Molinaro as Marvin, Tal Fox as his wife, Michelle Lane as his teacher Miss Goldberg, and Lea Madda as his high school sweetheart.  They lead us up and down the stage, over and under each other, achieving success with each movement and brilliant musical talent.  Vocally they are superb, and they knock your socks off with Finn’s fast paced Operetta-like music, and with Ryan O’Connor’s artful direction.   We are left exuberant from it all.

With Marvin’s love for his teacher, Miss Goldberg, he confronts his confusion.  He reaches clarity as he moves from teacher, sweetheart and eventually to his wife with a 10-year marriage of convenience.  I felt a part of the play set on a small stage with a fantastic band behind the actors, led by conductor Jake Anthony on piano, Joe Martone on percussion, and Ethan Chiampas on bass.

We are lucky to have this production at the Lounge theatre.  “IN TROUSERS” is rarely produced, and was originally written in 1979.  It is a must see for its music, the talented actors, and its message.

Another great night of theatre for you to enjoy.

Mayra Andrade “Tan Kalakatan”

What We’re Listening to…

Cape Verdean singer Mayra Andrade captivates us with “Tan Kalakatan,” the enchanting track of many from her album “Manga.”

“Tan Kalakatan” blends Afrobeat, pop and traditional Cape Verdean rhythms. The melodies are like the beat of water rippling over rocks in the sea. The harmonies Mayra creates with her voice are more traditional Cape Verde style but she mixes it up and brings in modern synth bassline and auto-tuned, overdriven vocals at the end of the song. But it still retains the soulful harmonies she blends throughout the song. Can autotune be soulful? Yes. It’s not just reserved for Britney.

Here’s the COLORS performance. Which one do you enjoy more, the COLORS show or studio studio track?  COLORS consistently gives us new, interesting, uber talented singers from all over the world.

You don’t need to speak a language to love a song. In “Tan Kalakatan” Mayra speaks Cape Verdean Creole, yet we don’t. That’s the beauty of music – it’s international, it’s universal. But hopefully it will inspire you to explore new languages, destinations and cultures.  They’ve started referring to Mayra as the new generation of Cesaria Evora, one of the most famous Capo Verdean singers of the 20th century who blended her own sound with many Cape Verdean rhythms. Cesaria Evora is also on our playlist now. While the queen Cesaria may have opened a window into Capo Verde music culture, Mayra has created a sound unique to her.  Mayra has lived many places throughout the world, on three continents, so these places with their own musical traditions have influenced her soulful, tropical, Capo Verdean-influenced sound.

Thanks to Mayra Andrade, we’ve started exploring Cape Verde’s rich musical styles of Morna, Funana, Coladera and Batuque, which are musical examples of the country’s location, topography, beauty, language and traditions.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BorF7mljBv-/

If “Tan Kalakatan” moved you and/or made you move, here’s another one of our “Manga” favorites that should hopefully do the same.

Enjoy “Afeto.”

Follow Mayra on her socials for some slices of musical treats. We hope she comes to Los Angeles soon.

Greta Van Fleet, The Soundflowers and Ivo Dimchev – Live Music in Hollywood

Before I launch into the gems that the L.A. Music Scene offered up; fireworks went off in my head on October 5, 2019.

As I entered into the realm of the Hollywood Palladium to attend the, sold out show of Greta Van Fleet and it felt as if I had walked through a time warp of some sort. WOOOOOOOW!

Had not been to the place since I saw Rod Stewart there and a Polka band opened for him. That was a most interesting gig indeed and decades ago…I was around 27-years old at the time.

And now here we are returning to the place of my youthful Hollywood Palladium days to see Greta Van Fleet. The guys have been on the “March of The Peaceful Army” tour since they had played at the Grammy Museum last year and have a few notches added to their belt of experience.

Greta Van Fleet have noticeably improved while on the road which has had a few bumps but overall has weathered the storm to outperform themselves if such a thing is possible. For those of you that have read my few stories on Greta Van Fleet, it is already known that I offered up the keys to the “Kingdom” to the guys and also put what points I had behind them.

It was so weird being at the Hollywood Palladium and all the ghosts from the past as a Go-Go Dancer there came flying out of the walls to greet me.

I could hear the roar of teenagers flocking to the Teen Fairs and the smell of lumber from the freshly built stages for the “Battle of The Bands” which is what the fair was really all about. To have been able to dance on the stage with Greta Van fleet back then would have been a mind-blowing experience from what I could see and hear on October 5th, 2019. Sunday’s show also sold out which is the way it has been since the Ford Theater and their appearances at The Viper Room and The Troubadour. Around the world and back again Greta Van Fleet could truly be called “wandering troubadours” as it seems that they’ve been on the road for a very long time. Vicky Hamilton was also at show and had seen them at The Viper Room which was their first gig in Los Angeles. Hamilton agrees that they have gotten more polished and in a groove while on the road.

While some say that it’s time for them to shed their skin and grow a different way, others say that they are still young and just need to perfect what they have before they move on to something else. Sometimes that morphing takes a bit of time to make an appearance. According to a Greta Van Fleet insider the guys wanted to broaden their perspective fans to accommodate the younger teenagers and I think that night I witnessed that they had succeeded at that goal. Lots of teenagers and some parent and child pairings in addition to the older population of their fans. I was very happy that I could have a Mimosa there while enjoying the intensly talented Greta Van Fleet.

No shoes, no shirt, who cares? The guys rocked it up!

In other doings in Hollywood, The Hotel Cafe offered up a few unique acts recently that were quite a departure from my smokin’ hot rock tastes.

Ivo Dimchev hails from Sophia, Bulgaria, but his flair and sensuality are from a different realm altogether.

Dimchev’s past is steeped in performance art for which he tells his interviewer, “I would rather be weird than run of the mill.” Run of the mill isn’t on the menu from the beginning of his show to the end with his delicious baritone speaking voice to the fluttering of his high tones in a Falsetto register, his mannerisms are carefully choreographed and his chiseled good looks add to the nuance that is Ivo Dimchev.

Dimchev’s songs are penned by him and tell stories about his life such as “Melrose” which echoes his early days on Melrose Avenue. Dimchev is a singer, songwriter, choreographer and self described stage addict. He has appeared on the “X- Factor UK” in 2018 as a contestant and describes his performance as wanting to push the boundaries and believes that he can do just that.

Dimchev also has a background in physical theater which was delved into armed only with his art history degree and the rest is history. The photographs that he posts on his Instagram belie his “artistic” background and are very mature themed and display his flair and sensuality in very creative ways.

Dimchev did manage to pack the house as far as I could tell and I believe him when he states that he does very well when he tours Europe. Dimchev doesn’t have a huge cadre of dancers, singers and musicians that fill the space on a stage. Dimchev does it all, and then some.

Up next were “The Soundflowers” which are Paris Jackson and Gabriel Glenn, who is her boyfriend.

The pair didn’t go into this gig with a lot of fanfare and, according to Facebook friend and frequent companion of “The Soundflowers” Elliot Mintz, they never do a big publicity blast when they are playing gigs around town.

According to Mintz “they write their own songs and play acoustically. In recent months they have appeared in approximately seven different clubs around Hollywood and I have joined them each time. There is no announcement or fanfare, they just appear and begin to play. Their sets last for an hour. I have watched them mesmerize audiences who usually have no idea who they are or where they are from. Nobody leaves. In the process, they are fine tuning their talents and singing with added confidence and passion. Watching them evolve gives me great pleasure.”

Mintz also adds that Paris and Gabriel are a “magical union,” which I totally agree with. I had the opportunity to tell Mintz that he was soooo right about “The Soundflowers” in his post about their local shows and how glad I was for listening to him and going to see for myself how they are.

Paris has a very soft, delicate and almost angelic voice that compliments any of the songs that she and Gabriel presented at this gig.

There is no playlist and they play what feels right for the venue and crowd I am told. That’s ok. There are currently two short clips of them at The Hotel Cafe on my YouTube channel if you care to get a bit of a peek and hear for yourself how they sounded. I only offer up short peeks at an acts set because I only want those that have never seen or heard them before can hear for themselves what I am talking about. This pair combine and mingle their eclectic styles into quite a chill and aesthetically pleasing show.

Keep your eyes open next month for the Dirty Honey show at The Troubadour on November 22, 2019 as these guys have been breaking records such as earning the #1 spot on the Rock Radio charts with their “When I’m gone”. This unsigned act is slated to fill two openings for Guns N’ Roses who are known to kick some serious Rock N’ Roll ass. I’ve even been to a concert of theirs and wow! In fact, I even wrote a story which included the above mentioned concert. “Too Old To Rock N’ Roll…Don’t Believe It” is the title and was first published in the “Metal News,” a local rock rag.

Hope to see you all there as it should be interesting to see how playing with seasoned road vets influences their performance and attitude.

Joel Cuzzi “Footprints” Album Release

A hard core punk musician, Joel Cuzzi uses this new album to search his softer side.

Acoustic Punk music is a thing…and this is certainly a brilliant and heartfelt offering of this genre.

This record is dedicated to Tony Sly, the frontman for No Use For A Name who Joel supported on tour and wrote with.  This new record also features vocals by Jared Stinson of Sic Waiting and Morty Lopez of the Kegels.

Obviously its hugely influenced by Punk, but there’s a lot more here. Folk, rock and even some indie.  I hear REM and Green Day and there’s some beautiful guitar work with deeply classical overtones.  It feels as if Joel is literally playing his heart out.  All the broken pieces and the pieces full of longing and anger and even the pieces full of hope.

It’s gorgeously autobiographical but it doesn’t feel at all self-indulgent.

Favorite track…”Sunrise”…just because. I kept waiting for the grinding electric guitars to kick in at first, but actually it’s more interesting without all that.  You can hear Joel’s voice front and center and it’s pure and real and meaningful…loved it!
