DEATHTRAP – This is definitely a hit for The Group Rep

THE GROUP REP presents “DEATHTRAP,”  written by Ira Levin directed by Jules Aaron.

It’s 1979 and deep in the woods of Westport, Connecticut at a country estate.   Sidney (Robert Benedict Nello) has had a successful career as a playwright of thrillers but now seems to have hit a dry spell.  It appears that he will do just about anything to get the right story idea to create another theatrical success.   Lucky for us, Ira Levin’s infamous comic thriller, “DEATHTRAP,” is The Group Rep’s terrific new offering at the Lonny Chapman Theatre.  Is another hit in Sidney’s future?

This is definitely a hit for The Group Rep.

Sidney is now desperate after a series of flops, and he and wife Myra (Gina Yates) devise a plan to give Sidney a great story idea so he can create his next hit.  Clifford (TJ McNeill), a former writing seminar student of Sidney’s, has sent Sidney a play for his comments, with Sidney inviting him to his estate for collaboration.  Sidney loves the play and wants it for his own.  But Clifford has written it.   Could this be Sidney’s new hit play?  Adding to the “merriment” is Helga Ten Dorp (LizAnne Keigley), a well known psychic staying in the couple’s guest house who seems to “know” the who, what and where of everything.   She “sees” danger.  She “sees” death.  Her psychic ability may cause some problems with Sidney and Myra’s plan.   Even Porter Milgrim (Lloyd Pedersen), Sidney’s perceptive lawyer realizes something is amiss.  Suspense mounts throughout the play, and there is a twist, then a turn, then a twist, then another turn, then a twist…well, you get the picture.  There are loads of twists and turns.   If you have never seen this play, or the fantastic movie, you will be in for a real treat.  Every moment has something unexpected.  It’s a thriller, with murder, but with loads of laughs.  And, wow, the ending.

This ensemble of wonderful actors really gives us the essence of what “DEATHTRAP” is all about, and along with the amazing Jules Aaron’s direction (which never disappoints), we have a terrific play.   With a first glance at the stage you will see an amazing set design by Chris Winfield, and you know instantly this is going to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

“DEATHTRAP” holds the record for the longest-running comedy thriller on Broadway.  But, we can see it at the Lonny Chapman Theatre in North Hollywood.  Fun and thrills in our own backyard.  This is a great opportunity to see this award-winning play, “DEATHTRAP.”   Have fun everybody!

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!

Follow These Tips for Safe International Travel

Are you like me, always scouring the internet for super discounts and great deals on international air travel?

With outbound international travel from the USA increasing more and more every year, travelling to Europe or Asia for even a long weekend doesn’t seem that much out of the ordinary anymore.  Wherever you may be planning to travel abroad next, it’s a good idea to make sure you have some simple and standard best practices in place to optimize your safety and give you peace of mind to enjoy your trip.

The first thing I recommend you always do before an international trip is register with The Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (Step)  It takes just a few minutes and it’s free! By doing this you’ll receive the latest safety and security information for your destination country, it’ll help U.S. Embassy contact you in case of emergency (natural disaster, civil unrest, family emergency), and it helps family and friends get in touch with you abroad in an emergency.

Make sure to send a copy of your itinerary, including the hotels you’re staying at and/or the Airbnbs to a friend or family member who is not travelling with you. It’s also a good idea to have some kind of phone number they can call abroad to get a hold of you, whether it’s a tour operator/local guide, somebody that you are visiting, or as mentioned at least the hotel’s phone number where you’ll be staying.

Get up to date on your travel vaccines before your trip. Common vaccines that are a good idea for any traveler are Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, Tetanus and Rabies. But you can check the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website or your specific country and what they recommend getting and being up to date on.Another best practice is to keep your passport locked in your hotel safe or at least locked in your luggage if there’s not a safe in your room while you’re out in your destination country. Take a picture of it with your phone or photocopy it ahead of time to carry on you. That way, if it is stolen or lost, getting a replacement will be much easier.

An old trick to employ for extra security while traveling is to use a dummy wallet which contains some canceled credit cards and just a little bit of cash. It’s enough to make a would-be thief think he or she is getting something worthwhile, while keeping your real valuables well hidden, like under the insole of your shoe or a secret pocket you have sewn inside of your pants or shirt.

Also, find out what the local emergency hotlines are in each country (911 is not universal) you visit and save them to your phone or write them down and keep on you at all times. And always know where the nearest U.S. embassy is or consulate.

Try to dress down a bit when travelling abroad, and lose the fancy watches and jewelry. For obvious reasons, you don’t want to scream “hey I’m an American tourist with a good amount of cash and valuables on me” as you’re exploring other countries and cultures. Try to blend in as much as possible. I don’t even wear shirts or hats that advertise American sports teams, movies, bands or cities on them when I travel abroad. That might be taking it a bit too far, but again my goal is to blend in as much as possible and not cause attention to myself. And it’s nice to shed a little bit of our American heritage when in other countries, if not for just a week or two.

Finally, interactive travel forum sites like TripAdvisor can be a good resource to review other travelers’ recent experiences in your up-coming destination country/city and avoid any specific tours or areas where problems, crime, or unrest have been reported. Just click on the travel board forum for your destination city or country and get current advise and travel tips in almost real-time.

I encourage you to travel as much as you can this year and beyond, immerse in other cultures, learn about the history of your destination country, open your mind to new possibilities and ways of thinking, taste new foods and drinks and expand your horizons!
Did you know?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for U.S. citizens abroad. – Dying abroad while travelling via a homicide or act of terrorism is extremely unlikely. You’re actually more likely to run into crime or violence here in the U.S. than in most other counties. Between 2009 and 2013, 1,151 Americans – out of a population of 316 million – were killed abroad. For comparison, 15,809 homicides occurred in the U.S. in 2014 alone.  (Source: data.world )Cheers,

4 Myths About Shelter Dogs

Most of us have a basic understanding of the pros of adopting a shelter dog.

We know that pet overpopulation is a problem and that too many people are profiting from the suffering of animals born in puppy mills. Why then are so many good folks unwilling to adopt a dog from the shelter?

Unfortunately, it often comes down to belief in one or more common myths about animal shelters and the dogs that are in their care. Let’s take a closer look:

Myth: Dogs land in the shelter for a reason. The reason must be because they are “bad.”

There are many reasons why our canine companions land in the shelter system. Some had very good homes with owners that loved them very much, but economic hardship, health problems, and other life changes can force the hands of otherwise loving and fit owners. Such dogs likely already have basic housetraining and manors down pat. They are just waiting for their next loving family to find them.

Another reason dog’s find their way to the shelter is irresponsible breeding. Unwanted puppies are common in the shelter system. Not just from puppy mill raids, but also from families that simply lacked the resources to have their pet spayed or neutered and had a litter of puppies they could not afford to care for. These pups are just as ready to be “good” dogs as their purebred cousins. They just need a chance to show you how good they can be.

Finally, research has shown that even if a dog is surrendered for “behavioral problems,” the cause may have more to do with an ignorant owner who lacked the basic knowledge to train their dog to be appropriate in a human world. Many local shelters have started to include free and low-cost basic training programs to help those new to dog ownership learn basic training skills which has helped reduce recidivism in the shelter system.

Myth: Shelter staff are invested in pushing problem dogs on people.

In fact, this just isn’t true. Shelter staff are all too aware that placing dogs with behavioral problems with people unprepared to handle them is only going to land the dog back at the shelter with one more trauma under their belts. Likewise, dogs with special needs such as ongoing medical treatment or those on special diets could be an economic burden that a potential owner will not be able to afford.

As many as 56% of shelter dogs are euthanized in the shelter system. Staff do their best to make sure that the dogs selected for this tragic consequence of pet overpopulation are precisely those dogs with the least chance of long term long-term. Although this sometimes is a result of known aggression issues, it is just as likely to be because of expensive health problems, special needs, or advanced age.

Moreover, many shelters utilize behavioral testing as part of their screening process. If there are known issues, the staff will be upfront about that. Some folks are interested in helping otherwise unadoptable dogs and have the skillsets to do the rehab work that may be involved. Staff will help such folks find a candidate. However, the average dog owner will be directed to one of the many dogs that is already a good candidate for a family pet.

Myth: Adopting a dog from a shelter is too expensive.

It is true, adopting a dog from the shelter will cost you more than a “free” dog that you might find on Craigslist. However, the value that you get at a shelter is simply unmatchable. Shelter dogs come with vaccinations up to date, spay/neuter complete (or vouchers to get it done in the case of young puppies), and in some cases even microchips. They usually get special bulk pricing on veterinary services and pass the considerable savings on to you through the adoption fee. When you consider the value, adoption fees are dirt cheap.

Moreover, the rates of pet scams on online classifieds ads are very high. In some cases, puppy mills are kept in business through such sites. In other cases, stolen purebred dogs are “flipped” in the anonymous spaces that online trading sites enable. While there are also honest people doing their best to find a good home for their dog, you do need to do your homework to make sure you are not contributing to the profiteering of unscrupulous people.

Myth: With a purebred dog, you know what you are getting.

First, working with a shelter to find your next dog does not mean you cannot find a specific breed. In fact, as many as 25% of dogs in the shelter system are purebred dogs. Moreover, the staff at the shelter often work closely with breed rescue organizations and if they are not able to find a dog in their care that meets your breed requirements, chances are they can direct you to some volunteers that can.

Second, while responsible breeding practices can stabilize certain characteristics such as a strong drive to work or a tolerance for being poked by children, every single dog remains an individual shaped largely by their experiences and the training they receive. Every single breed can become aggressive if exposed to trauma—there is no magic DNA formula to ensure a balanced dog.

Adoption May Be Right for You

While pet adoption is not a good fit for everyone, we hope you have found this article helpful in terms of thinking through some of the myths surrounding animal shelters. These organizations play a critical role in helping second chance dogs find the forever home they deserve as well as combatting animal cruelty through advocacy and awareness programs.

Making the decision to adopt from a shelter is one that you can be proud of, knowing that you are doing your part to rescue your next best friend.

5 Ways You’re Sabotaging Your Health Goals Without Realizing It

Ways You’re Sabotaging Your Health Goals Without Realizing It

Sometimes you eat right and exercise, yet you still don’t feel healthy. You get tired and stop losing weight. It’s possible you’re sabotaging your health goals without realizing it. If you review your habits carefully, you may uncover the behavior that stalled your progress. Are any of these factors causing you to lose motivation?

  1. Not Staying Hydrated

hydrated.jpg

Image via Flickr by StuffNThings

Water helps your body remove toxins and regulate your temperature. If you don’t drink enough water, you may get dehydrated. Do you suffer from tiredness and headaches? Both are common signs of dehydration. A standard recommendation is to drink eight glasses of water to replace the fluids your body uses each day. If exercise is part of your health plan you’ll lose extra water in sweat, so drink more water.

  1. Failing to Track All the Calories You Eat

If weight loss is one of your top goals, make sure to track how many calories you take in. Estimating is not a good idea since your numbers could be way off. Log the calories every time you eat. If you taste your food while cooking or grab snacks on the go, don’t forget to track those foods too. Lifesum offers easy ways to count calories and ideas on how to ensure your count is accurate.

  1. Drinking Extra Calories

fruit.jpg

Image via //www.flickr.com/photos/77762225@N05/9692169522/sizes/m/“>Flickr by kentuckies

Drinks are another sneaky way to inflate your calorie intake. Soda, mixed drinks, and coffee bar beverages are often full of added sugar or fat. Read product labels or ask for nutritional information before you order a soft drink or cappuccino. Choose water or seltzer instead. If you get bored with water, add natural flavor with cucumber or lemon.

  1. Staying up Too Late

Getting enough sleep is essential to staying fit. Sleep helps your body rest and recover from the previous day’s activities. Lack of sleep can cause levels of the stress hormone cortisol to soar, making it harder to lose weight. Exhaustion can also sap your motivation to work out. Try to get at least eight hours of sleep each night. You’ll feel well rested and energetic the next day.

  1. Overestimating Calories Burned

Overestimating the calories you burn can also derail your health goals. You may think you can quickly burn off the extra calories you consume. It’s not so easy. Harvard Health Publishing reports that a 155-pound person burns just 244 calories during 30 minutes of riding a stationary bike at a moderate pace.

The same person who completes 30 minutes of high-impact aerobics burns 444 calories. When you splurge on a 1,000 calorie fast food meal or dessert, it’s difficult to burn off those extra calories with exercise in one day.

If you feel exhausted or see your weight loss slow down, take a closer look at your habits. Make sure you track all the food you eat and get enough water and rest. Follow these tips to find out if you’re sabotaging your health goals. Simple changes can make a difference in your weight loss progress.

Enjoy a Great Quality of Life in Sunny Malta

Enjoy a Great Quality of Life in Sunny Malta

Located in the Mediterranean around fifty miles south of Sicily, Malta is a small archipelago boasting a warm Mediterranean climate, outstanding healthcare system, and a majority English-speaking population. Malta and its sister islands Gozo and Comino are growing rapidly as popular tourist destinations and are home to some of the best diving locations in the world. Some popular tourist  and expatriate destinations in Malta include the vibrant capital port city of Valletta, which is home to a busy pedestrian shopping area, stunning ancient and wartime architecture, and a wide range of restaurants from fast food joints to five-star dining. If you want to enjoy a great quality of life in the sun, there are several great reasons to consider moving to Malta. These include:

#1. Affordable Cost of Living:

One of the best reasons to consider relocating to Malta is the fact that it offers a very affordable cost of living. A couple could easily live on a budget of around £1,500 per month. Utilities average at less than £100 per month, and rental prices for mid-range apartments in Valletta and some coastal areas start at around £550 per month. You’ll pay even less in rent living on Gozo or inland Malta. For those with a bigger budget, renting a villa in Malta can be an affordable way to live in luxury, or if you’re planning to relocate permanently, you could buy a house. Since the island is so small, you may find that a car isn’t needed – Malta has a reliable Arriva bus system with one-way tickets available at around €2 or £1.74.

#2. Modern Amenities in Ancient Roots:

One of the most unique things about Malta is that there’s a mix of old and new, with a wide mixture of cultures and cultural influences. Although the population is European and English-speaking, Malta still feels slightly exotic, thanks to the light and the long, hot days. The slightly rasping, liquid native Maltese language is still widely spoken, although most nationals are multi-lingual with English being the second official language. As you travel around Malta, you’ll see road signs and facilities such as bus stops with information written in both English and Maltese. The British have certainly made a big impact on Malta, leaving them with British roads and driving styles, three-pronged electric sockets, and even red post and telephone boxes. In the capital of Valletta, you can see the changing of the guard, similar to outside Buckingham Palace. For Brits living in Malta, these small home comforts can make all the difference.

#3. Rich History and Heritage:

A rich history and mixture of cultures is day to day life in Malta. Located less than sixty miles from Sicily and only 180 miles from North Africa, Malta is in a unique position at the crossroads of East and West. This makes it a perfect location for not only Europeans, but many African and Asian people who call Malta home. Malta today is founded by a rich history of Romans, Arabs, Phoenicians, and Normans settling on the archipelago. More importantly, the Crusades’ Knights of St John founded their base in Malta and built the city of Valletta, with much of the original architecture still intact today.

#4. Friendly, Welcoming Atmosphere:

Malta is one of the most welcoming countries in Europe, with locals who go out of their way to make everybody feel welcome. Malta is home to people from a wide range of cultures and backgrounds, with inhabitants originating from all over the world. The Maltese locals are warm, friendly, and immensely proud of their country, which is buzzing with traditional Mediterranean values focusing on good food and strong relationships. To attract top talent and wealth to the country, the Maltese government has also created a citizenship by investment programme. This was the first programme of its kind to be fully recognized by the European Commission.

With all its traditional values, ancient heritage and rich history, Malta is very much living in the 21st century. Wi-Fi is easy accessible all over the island thanks to plentiful Ozone hotspots, and it’s an international hub for banking, online gaming, and film studio animations. It’s also well-connected by air to both Europe and Africa, in addition to several ferry and sea services to Sicily and other destinations. Although it’s small, it’s one of the most densely-populated areas in the world filled with villages that are hundreds of years old, with historic buildings, winding roads, and unusual shops.

Would you consider relocating to Malta? We’d love to hear from you!

The Archway Studio Presents: The Women @ The Pinup Girl Boutique

Archway Studio Presents: The Women @ The Pinup Girl Boutique. This whole production has a little bit of magic to it.

A classic, brilliant play set in the 30s with outstanding female roles (and only female roles), all staged in one of the best stores in L.A., The Pinup Girl Boutique in Burbank.

I knew very little about Claire Boothe Luce, the writer of this classic and hilarious play, but after a bit of online research, I can report that she was a pretty incredible woman, a writer, politician, war journalist, conservative feminist, acid wit with ambition, drive and intelligence. Look her up!

thumbnail 79b096 ac3d690990824f7e8f0fe1f881a1dc69 mv2 d 4256 2832 s 4 2

This play was her most successful and it ran and ran and ran on Broadway and beyond for many years.  It was made into a movie in 1939 staring Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Paulette Goddard and Joan Fontaine.  It’s not surprising that it would be produced, but it’s a tricky thing, to take such an iconic piece and do it justice.  These fabulous female roles demand the kind of power, sarcasm, wit and nerve that can’t be faked.

The folks at Archway Studio have done a superb job.  They have stayed true to the play and the characters and resisted the obvious temptation to bring it up to date, to modernize or reference our world today.  Because of their determination to truly love the material and commit to the sheer joy of the characters, the story and, above all, the words, this play is hugely successful and an absolute delight.

The costumes are all furnished by the Pinup Girl Boutique and these lucky actresses have dozens of costume changes, each outfit more divine than the last. It’s a brilliant, fun and also human and heart-rending production.

It’s the age-old story of betrayal…by husbands, by best friends, by our own misplaced loyalties and fears. It’s all here in icy, bitter, sarcastic glory.

Surrounded by the beautiful clothes and immersed in the era of glamour and sass, these players have the perfect place to perform and it really is such a brilliant way to present this wonderful play. Bravo!!  I loved it!

thumbnail 79b096 efc709b60e394ca28b805765ecee9726 mv2 d 4256 2832 s 4 2

Everyone is fantastic too. They all look so happy throwing themselves into this play, strutting and wiggling and doing such wonderful work I truly couldn’t stop smiling the entire time. I highly recommend that you waste no time at all, it’s a very limited run, so get your tickets now!!

The Impact of Fashion in Different Careers

The Impact of Fashion in Different Careers

The clothing we choose to wear—and the image that we project of ourselves through our appearance—can either help or hinder us on our path to achieving our career goals. Our appearance has a significant effect on how other people perceive our character, so it’s important to think about it both when applying for a new job and within an existing workplace. Fashion has had a considerable influence on many different professions and has even helped to create new ones. For example, recent advances in technology have spawned social media influencers who directly inform the products and clothing that people buy by wearing and using sponsored brands that fit with their personal style.

Conversely, in the wider technology industry, the ‘Apple-approved’ uniform of unbranded, casual t-shirt and jeans is still going strong. Steve Jobs pioneered the simple look with his infamous black turtleneck and sneakers combo, and it has since been taken up by other tech giants like Mark Zuckerberg and, to some degree, Elon Musk and Bill Gates. The reasoning is that these guys are too busy re-inventing the wheel to waste precious moments thinking about what to wear, so they stick to the same outfit every time. However, this concept is misleading. The plain, unassuming nature of their outfits is designed to project a certain image to their customers—one of industry, concentration on their products and rejection of a corporate world based on image. Ironically, much of their career is about image and design, but by wearing basic clothing, they direct consumer focus towards their products rather than themselves.

The world of professional poker is a perfect example of how a casual style took over, due to an influx of experienced online poker players who migrated to the live tables and were used to playing tournaments from their bedroom. For these players, feeling physically comfortable whilst playing a game was paramount, with big names like ElkY and Dario Minieri wearing hoodies, casual t-shirts and sunglasses. Of course, in addition to being comfortable and, therefore, putting players more at ease, clothing such as hoodies and sunglasses are very effective at hiding a player’s emotions and any tells. This casual style was more than just a desire to be comfy; it was also a practical mode of dress for the game.

However, with the ongoing rise of the industry, players are now starting to wear smarter clothing to reflect their healthier lifestyles. Dressing smartly can help anybody look more professional and put together, but, in the world of poker, this is especially effective at intimidating a player’s opponents. If one player is kitted out in a tailored suit, then they are immediately going to seem more of a threat than the guy in sweatpants and a t-shirt. Concentrating on presentability can go a long way in making a person appear more confident and successful than they perhaps really are. The lesson to be learnt here is that, whilst it’s important to feel comfortable in order to do well, it is also important to project the right image that’s appropriate to the situation.

Celebrate National Sibling Day!

In honor of National Sibling Day, on April 10 we celebrate our brothers and sisters…all types.

According to the U.S. Census, 79% of all children in the U.S. grow up with siblings. That’s a lot of people. So we give our www.nohoartsdistrict.com readers a reminder: April 10, 2018 is National Sibling Day. Surprise your sibling and do something kind.

National Sibling Day is a day to honor, appreciate and cherish all brothers and sisters and memorialize those who are no longer with us. Take the time to give your sibling a hug, e-card, special lunch/dinner or maybe a simple picnic at the local park. For those on a budget and not geographically close to your sibling, send them a poem or a photo of you two playing as children, have a local restaurant deliver them dinner, or a phone call will work, too.

If you and your sibling live near each other and close to North Hollywood, pick up a NoHo Discount Card (nohoartsdistrict.com/nohocard) and discounts off a delicious meal together at The Federal Bar, Pitfire, Fat Dog, or whatever tickles your fancy.

Life is short. They got the same blood running through their veins.  Remember what happens when you smile at someone ….they smile back automatically. So take National Sibling Day as a day to make your brother or sister smile.

If you are the only child, you can still celebrate. You can honor the friends who have acted just like a brother or sister should. This day is to spread the love to those who stand by you like a sibling is supposed to.

This holiday was created by Claudia A. Evart of New York City to honor the memory of her sister Lisette and brother Alan. Both siblings died from tragic accidents. Claudia established a not for profit organization to promote this wonderful day of sibling appreciation – Siblings Day Foundation, www.siblingsday.org. Since 1998, 56 governors have signed proclamations in 32 states recognizing this day. To our knowledge, there has not been a presidential proclamation or act of Congress to make this a true national holiday.

So spread the brotherly and sisterly love whether they’re your blood relation, friend or furry friend.

Review- Isle of Dogs; The Death of Stalin

Review-  Isle of Dogs; The Death of Stalin

In Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs, humanity has gone to the dogs.

Oh yes, there are human characters, but in his return to stop-motion animation (after The Fantasic Mr. Fox), and with the emphasis on outcast canines, Anderson has created his most heartfelt, engaging film yet. The premise (as explained by our canine guide Juniper (F. Murray Abraham) and the unseen narrator (Courtney P. Vance) is that in Japan of the near-future, an infectious outbreak among dogs has caused the vindictive Megasaki Mayor (who’s a cat loving dog hater—part of the residue of an earlier feud) to banish all dogs to Trash Island. Enter the Mayor’s young ward Atari, who grabs a plane and crash lands on this Isle of Dogs looking for his beloved Spot. Though Atari can only speak Japanese, he manages to convey this urgency to his canine protectors (including such Anderson regulars as Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Jeff Goldblum, with the most reluctant canine voiced by Bryan Cranston). Meanwhile in Megasaki, there are those scientists who are looking for a cure, and one youthful activist (Greta Gerwig) who tirelessly (if a bit stridently) seeks the truth. One needn’t look hard to see the allegorical nature of all this, whether it’s in the demagoguery of its officials, the intolerance of the populace, the expulsion of the unwanted individuals, or the threat of annihilation.

There is much to enjoy about Isle of Dogs, if you’re an Anderson fan or not. If you know Anderson’s work, then you’ve become accustomed to all his self-reflexive techniques, including the cutaways and interruptions in the main action for occasional flashbacks. These function especially well here, and deepen one’s emotional investment in the film.  For another, the visuals are compelling throughout, as in when they’re depicting the bleakness of the island (complete with maggots, trash heaps, abandoned nuclear power plants), and especially when the camera is focusing on the film’s most impressive accomplishment: the dogs themselves. Supplemented by superb vocal work, especially from Norton and Cranston (as the strong, sturdy canine who accepts no masters), these abandoned dogs have not abandoned their loyalty to each other, or what we might see as simple human values. There are moments of joy amidst all the hauntingly composed squalor, and several poignant moments, especially among the canines—which makes Isle of Dogs the director’s most humane work yet.

There isn’t much humanity on display in The Death of Stalin, a riotous blend of farce and satire in which Soviet leader Joseph Stalin’s sudden death results with the ineffectual Malenkhov (Jeffrey Tambor) in charge—in name only. There are other political players, notably Steve Buscemi’s guardedly ambitious Khruschev and Simon Russell’s Beria, who want both Malenkhov’s ear and supremacy within the inner circle. Burning questions are addressed—with much (unlikely) comic effect, such as will Stalin’s purges continue? Who will emerge as the real reformer, the scrambling Khruschev or the quietly conniving Beria? Will Stalin’s policies stay in place even after the succession of power? How will the military (represented by the impressively brutal Jason Isaacs) play a role? How long can Molotov (Michael Palin) continue to insist on maintaining Stalin’s legacy while persisting in undermining it (Palin masters the doublespeak of Molotov, regardless of situation). Finally, what to do about Stalin’s grown children, each potential future impediments—and let us not forget that attractive pianist tabbed to play the funeral, but whose ill will toward Stalin threatens to topple Khruschev’s power play.

The wonder of The Death of Stalin, directed and co-written by Armando Iannucci, is how he juggles each of these elements with wit, savagery, and comic finesse. The history may not be accurate, but the depiction of these self-serving politicos who will stop at nothing to consolidate their own standing results in some of the funniest scenes one will see on screen this year. Even before Stalin’s funeral, these inner circle members resemble nothing more than well-dressed blend of the Three Stooges and Keystone Kops, scrambling to find a good doctor after they realize they’ve imprisoned all the competent ones. The funeral itself lends itself to slapstick and frantic plotting, even as horrific events are unfolding in its wake. Iannucci manages to never lose sight of the darkness, even as he maintains the bitterly comic tone throughout, aided by skillful players like Tambor, Buscemi, Palin and Jones who spark the material and each other. They’re a terrific ensemble in what may well be the funniest film of the year.

A Tumbleweed Comedy Hits the “Prairielands” of Hollywood

Jim Beaver is internationally known for his starring roles in “Deadwood,” “Supernatural,” “Justified,” “The Ranch” and much more. He has joined forces with playwright Steve Nevil in the world premiere of “The Night Forlorn (or Waitin’ On Godsford”) at Theatre West directed by the talented Arden Teresa Lewis.

The reviews have been pouring in with superlatives i.e., “The clever dialogue is brought to life by the play’s director Arden Teresa Lewis who could not have been gifted with a more talented cast” -“A piece that is often lacking in Westerns was a shining beacon” – “Our prairie lights up with the arrival of all who give outstanding performances” – “this is one not to be missed” – “stand out performances from the instant the lights come up.”

I decided to further explore the journey with Jim and Steve as they shared their thoughts and experiences within their creative time together with Forlorn:

Steve, what was the driving force for you to write The Night Forlorn, and never give up on getting it on stage?

I’ve always be fascinated by “Waiting for Godot” ever since I was exposed to it in college. I heard the Camden recording years ago with Bert Lahr and E.G. Marshall and I’d seen the old tv kinescope from 1960 with Zero Mostel and Burgess Meredith. But there was always something that seemed to be missing for me. Then when I saw some live productions in the last few years, I realized that audiences were feeling the same way–they could appreciate the piece but didn’t seem to be that emotionally involved. What I set out to do was re-imagine that whole scenario in the context of a western–because I love Westerns– and give the two characters a back story where the audiences would be more emotionally invested in these two lead characters as the play progressed. And my mentor, Herbert Berghof, the renowned acting teacher and director of the original Godot in New York, was very helpful early on in encouraging me to explore that idea of reinventing these two hobos as a couple of Forlorn cowpokes at a crossroads in their lives.

Jim, you have an extensive film and stage background. What made you excited about doing Perce in “The Night Forlorn (or Waitin’ On Godsford)?”

Steve Nevil’s sense of comedy in combination with an absurdity derived from, but not merely a copy of, that in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot was what drew me to this play, along with my natural proclivity and fondness for the Western genre. An absurd cowboy comedy is my idea of heaven.

I understand, Steve, the talented Marvin Kaplan was one of your greatest cheerleaders to complete Forlorn and get it produced?

Marvin was only one of two people that I let read the finished script in its initial hour-long form. The play has a lot of comedy in it and I felt that Marvin, one of the great comic actors in film for six decades, would be a great person to scope out the comedic elements of the script and give me an idea if they played or if they were too heavy-handed or contrived. He was incredibly helpful as a dramaturg and helped me streamline some elements and embellish others to turn it into a full-length play. Marvin also understood that there is a vaudeville quality to these two fellows, a kind of throwback to Laurel and Hardy, and he really encouraged me to embrace that and the affection that these two have for each other. Marvin passed away a little over a year ago, but his Foundation has embraced this production and is helping to fund it with a grant, so I’m deeply grateful to him.

Jim, you have done so much in your career. What is the 40,000-foot view of your career that see as your greatest achievements?

As an actor, my role as Ellsworth on Deadwood, and the parts I played in The Lion in Winter and Cat On a Hot Tin Roof on stage are my proudest achievements. As a writer, my play Verdigris and my memoir Life’s That Way are works I’ll always point to if asked what makes me proud.

Steve, what were you looking for in selecting your director for your piece?

My intent was always to find a director who was in tune with actors, who understood how to communicate with them so that they’d feel free to explore the characters emotionally and not feel pressure to set a performance in stone too early in the rehearsal process. Arden Lewis is an incredible director with an innate sense of the text and how to deconstruct it, as well as a great eye for staging. She was absolutely crucial in the success of this production and I honestly might not have moved forward with it without her. I’d seen her incredible directorial work at Theatre West with “The Women,” “Thorn in the Family Paw,” and “Family Only,” and I felt she was the right person to take the reins on this piece. Plus, I’ve worked with her as an actor on stage and she absolutely understands the actor’s process and how to get the best from them in the shortest amount of time.

{youtube}sDJ06XNF-pE{/youtube}

This is wonderful ensemble cast, as mentioned in all the reviews. Jim, have you worked with any of these stellar actors before The Night Forlorn?

I’ve worked with everyone in The Night Forlorn before except for June Schreiner, some of them many times. My buddy Tom Allard and I first worked together in King Lear 46 years ago, and J. Downing and I have appeared in films together and been close friends dating back to the mid-1980s. This is our first time on stage together, though.

Also, Jim…Steve Nevil has written many brilliant lines in this wonderful play. What would be one or two or your favorites?

It’s not possible to sort out my favorite lines in this play. Every line in it is a gem, as far as I’m concerned.

Everyone is raving about this show Steve and they want to send their friends. If someone “doesn’t know Godot,” how would you suggest they describe The Night Forlorn to them?

I think anyone who sees The Night Forlorn is going to come away with their own ideas about what the play is about. I would say that while Waiting for Godot appears to have been written with the intent of advocating Beckett’s idea that there really is no God–The Night Forlorn takes a different tack. It not only presupposes that God does exist but presents the idea that events in our lives are not pre-ordained and that we are in control of our own destiny–God will help us out, but he–or she–is not going to do it for us. We have to make our own choices and we’re responsible for those choices. That’s the dilemma that Percy and Elvin, these two cowpokes of our story, find themselves in. Hopefully, audiences will be entertained by the play and end up talking about it well after the curtain call. That’s my hope, anyway.

Macbeth: His Story. Her Tragedy @ The McCadden Place Theatre

Fearless Imp Productions Presents: ”Macbeth: His Story. Her Tragedy.”

By William Shakespeare

Let’s be absolutely clear from the beginning…this is Macbeth.

But it is a slightly altered version of it.  While still keeping the unadulterated and original text, this Macbeth is told through the lens of Lady Macbeth, with her story fully rooted in the realm of a survivor of abuse.  It is through her eyes that we view the world of this play, hers and the other female roles.  So it puts us all in a rather interesting place, as audience, as actors, as men and women.

thumbnail Macbeth 197Photo by Clark & Main Photography

Why would a woman, a wife, encourage her husband down a path of murder, treachery, and the unadulterated ambition of power for power’s sake?  A path that from the very beginning could only ever end one way for the two of them?  It’s a question that, at least in this compelling version of the infamous Scottish play, is answered loud and clear by posing the idea that Lady Macbeth was raped by King Duncan and that this terrible crime was the source of her rage and the fire beneath the entire story.

It’s quite a proposition and, given the current climate, a resonating one.

thumbnail Macbeth 81Photo by Clark & Main Photography

From the start of the play, with some interesting and reality tilting dance and movement, the story is off its center…just enough.  The men are who they are in print, but the women carry a subtle and slightly unnerving power that focuses the audience on the ‘why’ of the play, and when the why is not so centered on Macbeth himself as we are used to, it gives the story a riveting and powerful twist.

The staging is excellent, very well crafted, and it serves this huge iconic story brilliantly.  The cast is mesmerizing, the roles from large to small are all as strong as each other and the female roles are particularly striking, as they should be given the tone. They’re played, without exception, with heart, intelligence and a kind of raw strength that steered this play throughout.

If you are partial to Shakespeare with a little twist, then “Macbeth: His Story. Her Tragedy” might be right up your 17th century meets #METOO alley. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed this fascinating and believable take on a tragedy for our times.

Carter Sexton Hyperbole call to artists via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

What made you decide to do a show on caricatures?

We have a lot of caricature artists that shop in here on a regular basis and also thought it would be challenging for artists outside of the genre to push their styles a bit.

Are you looking for something in particular?

We are looking for art that exhibits exaggeration or forced perspective. It can be portraiture, photography, or sculpture.

Can you tell us more about the artist reception?

The opening reception will be Saturday, April 21st from 5 until 8. There will be appetizers, beverages, music fitting of the occasion and hopefully a working caricature artist.

Anything else you’d like to add?

We really want artists to have fun with this one. Classic caricature art is certainly welcome but not required.

Elli Ingram “Rocket” + “Sweet & Sour”

We’re listening to all of Elli Ingram’s music but, since we must choose one song to highlight, we’re listening to her “Rocket” track from her “Love You Really” LP.

We got to see in London recently on her “Love You Really” tour and it was the highlight of our trip, hands down. We were browsing Time Out London to see what interesting things were happening because it is London afterall and there is always something fun happening. (London and L.A. should be sister cities, just saying.) We came across the lovely Elli and have been nonstop listening to her ever since.  But why did she catch our eye? Easy.

Elli is a vocal dynamo. Her music is feisty, quirky, powerful and danceable. Her voice is sultry but her lyrics are truthful, real and a bit naughty.

“Rocket” is our pick.  It was a hard choice but it was the first one we sang out loud to. It is an upbeat and sweet love song. At her Jazz Cafe concert in Camden she called it a cheeky love song. Well we love a cheesy, cheeky love song and we could use more of them these days. But “Rocket” is fun and danceable, and there’s nothing cheesy about that! Just listen to her voice. Then don’t dwadle, her album.

As avid travelers and lovers of getting away, if someone said to us “Baby, I’d fly first class with you,” we’d be hooked.

“Baby I want you, you’re my world and my weakness
It’s true, the captain of this love is you
Fly me up, throw me down in the stars flying first class with you”

Well, we lied when we said we had to pick just one song. “Sweet and Sour” is another track from Elli’s “Love You Really” album and another (there are many) that we have on repeat. Here’s a treat from the fab folks at Colors. . Their clean, straight-forward videos focus on the singer (s) and feature some awesome new music.

{youtube}yO5GaW3F30o{/youtube}

Watch out for Elli. She will surprise you, make you groove and sing out loud, and she will make you happy.

Keep up with Elli and let’s get her out to Los Angeles!

How to Pass Cisco CCNP 300-101 ROUTE Certification Exam

How to Pass Cisco CCNP 300-101 ROUTE Certification Exam

The Cisco 300-101 ROUTE certification examination tests the candidates’ routing knowledge and skills that they possess at an advanced level. To pass this exam, the applicant should showcase their ability and skill sets in advanced IP routing, as well as their knowledge to implement scalable and highly secure Cisco routers. These routers are generally connected to WANs, LANs, and IPv6 networks. The Cisco Press website has a section called “Store” where you can find the CCNP Routing and Switching ROUTE 300-101 Official Certification Guide. This is the first guide that you should have a look at before you dwell into the advanced world of routing. It will help you not only learn and practice the 300-101 exam topics and questions, but also pass this Cisco examination. The certification tutorial has an agenda to provide you with a fair assessment and review to enable and enhance your routing skills in theory and practice which will help you pass the test. Remember that the effective exam preparation is a key for its successful passing. So, in this article we will discuss how you can prepare for your Cisco certification test, what tips should you use for your dynamic self-preparation, how to take the recommended course, and pass the exam with flying colors.

This Guide from Cisco Press will make sure that you pass the exam on the first attempt. Cisco understands the value of your time and money, and so it conducted a guide that when followed thoroughly will help you succeed. However, Cisco also understands the value of the certification and its practical purpose in real life. Thus this corporation has made the course and the exam very elaborate so that you learn every aspect of routing and switching, and you are ready to work in the real world. Cisco has a mandate to enhance the reputation of the test, so it ensures that the course is updated on a regular basis and the exam incorporates the real world situation you might face outside. So, Cisco has perfectly played a balancing act, and thus most of the industry stalwarts respect people who pass its certifications. Remember that this CCNP course in Routing and Switching ROUTE 300-101 exam guide is a self-study resource which is approved by Cisco. The corporation also relied on an expert instructor Kevin Wallace, who is also a best-selling author, to provide you with tips for your exam preparation, tricks to take the test, ways to identify your strong and weak points, knowledge on a particular subject, and further preparation time.

This Cisco guide provides some key features that is very helpful to prepare for the 300-101 exam and pass it. An interesting feature that we have not found in most of the guides in the market is the quiz before the chapter. Now most of us are professionals and have some knowledge about the area of routing and switching. So, it is possible that we may already know some of these chapters well. At the same time, since time is a huge constraint, it would not be better to take a quiz before the chapter to see how much time you need to devote to it. If you answer questions well, you can choose to scan through the chapter. The next feature is the foundation and chapter-ending task. These features allow the candidates to intercept some basic concepts and associate them with the value of the configuration commands. Later, there are post chapter quizzes that you have to refer to judge your retaining capacity and understanding of the topics at hand. Remember, referring to a small formulae guide or important note just before the exam. Yes, this is a great help when you want to pass the test on the first try. The recommended exam guide provides pictures, figures and tables with the heading “Key Topic” in the margin area for last minute referral. You can use this as a scanning mechanism just before the most important day. The excellent function that you will find in this manual is the final preparation chapter. It provides you with a study plan, tools, and devices to help candidates complete their exam preparation.

As we have already discussed that the CCNP Routing and Switching ROUTE 300-101 Official Certification Guide provides you with the practical aspects of the course apart from the theory (in relation to its objective) it offers the CD-ROM Practice Test. This CD contains the testing software which is complete with reviewed and exam-realistic questions along with options to customize it and performance reports in a very detailed fashion.

Learn More About CCNP 300-101 Exam Preparation from Prepaway Here:
https://www.prepaway.com/300-101-exam.html

The guide contains personal training provided by the author who concentrates on the most important topics. This provides you with a chance to better understand the key topics –those on which you will be tested the most. So, ensure that you watch these videos attentively to get a grasp on the most major topics.

We will also look at certain tips that you need to follow when you are preparing for the 300-101 examination, as well as you are writing it on the exam day. Reach the venue before time and give your brain time to gain focus on your task at hand. Don’t scan through the chapter as you walk into the exam hall. Read the questions properly, give yourself sufficient time to think, and only then answer. Remember to check if you have the option to answer/review your answer at the end of the certification test. Concentrate and spend more time on questions that carry more marks. Don’t leave too much time for topics you are good at. Leave your time to reconsider some of the questions where you had to option to do so.

Best regards and Good luck!

NoHo Library Wants Families to Play! (LA PLays)

The families that play together stay together should be the LA PLays theme!

Well if you’re in the NoHo Arts District you’re a creative soul. Our North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Branch Library (a.k.a. NoHo Library) is no exception. They create programs for our neighborhood that are fun and encourage reading and library usage. Take a look at their newest program that encourages family play time. We asked NoHo Librarian Basya Samuels about the LA PLays program.

WHAT is LA PLays?

The North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Branch is celebrating the launch of a special new kids’ item for loan called LA PLays. These are backpack kits that are designed to encourage creative, imaginative play, and verbal interaction, with a focus on kids aged 0-5 years old. Each play kit comes in a kid sized backpack with a toy, a book, and a bilingual English/Spanish list of suggested activities for parents and children to do together.

Example 1: Breakfast Food themed backpack will include “Pancakes, Pancakes” by Eric Carle and a set of plastic food and eating utensils. A couple of the suggested activities are to sort and match all the plates, cups, and utensils by color; and to make pancakes together and talk about cooking safety.

Example 2: Fireman themed backpack will include a fireman book and fireman costume. Suggested activities may be to pretend to be firemen and drive a fire engine together; or talk about fire safety together while in uniform.

NoHo Library Wants Families to Play! (LA PLays) www.nohoartsdistrict.com

WHY is LA PLays important?

One of the five simple activities parents can do to help get their children to read, is playing. Since libraries are all about getting kids to read, we’re now also featuring these kits to encourage kids to play! The suggested list of activities also encourages adult and child interaction, a positive part of any young person’s life. Another goal of the project is to provide parents/caregivers with the knowledge and tools to engage in language-rich play with their babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. These fabulous kits have been rolled out at a few other LAPL – Los Angeles Public Library branches, and is really popular.

WHEN does LA PLays program run?

So, to celebrate the launch of the LA PLays (a take on “LAPL”) we are planning an afternoon of educational and fun activities for families. Our launch date is Monday, April 16th… and we’ll be celebrating from about 3pm-7pm at the North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Library at 5211 Tujunga Avenue, North Hollywood, 91601. Join us for the afternoon – and we hope you discover one of the hundred LA Play kits to check out with your library card. Link to our event: http://www.lapl.org/whats-on/events/la-plays-launch-party

Sing, Bibi, Sing!

“Sing, Bibi, Sing!”

Producers John Lant and Tamra Pica with Write Act Repertory hit another home run with the West Coast premiere of Elise Arndt’s award-winning one-woman show “SING BIBI SING! The Untold Tales of Bibi Osterwald.”

“SING BIBI SING!” is running at Write Act Repertory’s home, the Brickhouse Theatre, in North Hollywood for only four more performances with the last performance on April 8. For musical theatre lovers, this is a show you MUST see. I really understand why this was a sold-out run in New York.

“SING, BIBI, SING!” chronicles the untold tales of Bibi Osterwald, veteran actress of stage and screen. Bibi’s career spanned more than 50 years, which is documented by screen projections showing photos of New York long ago…very nostalgic. Her long and fruitful career in New York includes the Broadway productions of “Sing Out, Sweet Land!,” “Three to Make Ready,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “Look Homeward, Angel,” “Bus Stop,” “The Vamp,” “Family Affair,” “The Golden Apple” (Outer Critics Circle Award), and the first national tour of “42nd Street.” As standby for Hello Dolly for seven years, she stepped into the role over two hundred times for Ethel Merman, Betty Grable, Ginger Rogers, Phyllis Diller, Martha Raye, and Pearl Bailey.

The star of the show is Elise Arndt a NYC-based actress who has starred in The D* Word (from the creator of Menopause the Musical), and was featured in Footloose (Seven Angels), Briar Rose and the 13th Fairy (NYC premier), and Love, New York (music by Rob Rokicki). Elise co-hosts and is a special guest performer in La-Ti-Do, a premier cabaret series based in DC.

Elise cracks open Bibi’s songbook and weaves together their two stories to celebrate the triumphs and trials forging a career in the musical arts. You will here your favorite jazz standards and Broadway medleys.

I walked into the theatre hearing the overture to “42nd Street” and my feet never stopped dancing until the end of the show. Elise Arndt has a beautiful voice that reminds you of why you love Broadway musicals but also, her storytelling ability brought tears to my eyes on several occassions. “SING, BIBI, SING!” is a beautifully written show about family, passion for the arts and determination. Elise is truely endearing to watch…full of life.

The show was seamlessly directed by Christine O’Grady, (“HAIR,” “Legally Blonde” and Off Broadway “tick, tick…BOOM!…,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “The Boys in the Band”). The Dough Peck Trio brought musical magic to the show under the musical direction of Doug Peck. (Winner: six Joseph Jefferson Awards for his musical direction, two After Dark Awards, The Guy Adkins Award.

Special thanks to the producers, John Lant and Tamra Pica for adding another jewel in the Theatre Crown of NOHO.

Mulatto Math – Summing Up The Race Equation in America @ Whitefire Theatre

Mulatto Math – Summing Up The Race Equation in America

Created and performed by Monique DeBose
Directed by Denise Dowse

This one woman show is something a little special.

Monique DeBose is a singer-songwriter and playwright, a world traveller and mother, and her mother is white and her father is black.  She has a perspective on race and an accomplished ability to cleverly frame it that makes for a compelling and fascinating life story.  She brings us with her as she shares moments of her life, from early childhood to her more recent epiphanies, all interspersed with her lovely, bluesy voice showcasing her gift for songwriting and brilliantly accompanied by the rather fabulous Rene Patrick Audain on his bass.

Monique studied math in college, hence the ‘math’ segments of the show.  She illustrates her internal debates with the use of “Beautiful Mind” like illustrations, as she struggles with the logic of her mind and the emotions of her heart that pull her from one side of her family to the other and from one explanation of her existence to another.  All the while using her mathematical formulae trying to prove what she is still unable to pin down herself, namely why America has such a problem with race.

As an import from the UK I must say I can totally understand her frustration.

It’s a part of this wonderful country that continues to trouble me and often has me questioning whether I should stay or return to England, especially lately.  These issues run so deep here and Monique does her part to fathom them and perhaps give us some way forward, or at the very least, help her come to terms with her own life.

Monique DeBose’s experience of living in two worlds, one black, one white, but never feeling at home in either has created an illuminating and inspiring work of music, memories and math.  She has wrestled with her logical self to find her place in the world and her journey to her place of peace is fascinating, compelling and highly entertaining.

I highly recommend “Mulatto Math” at the Whitefire Theatre.

Monique DeBoise has the courage to ask questions that surely deserve our attention and in a way that is far beyond blame or judgement, which is a very good place to begin. Don’t you think?

Running from March 26 through May 6, Sundays at 7pm

Whitefire Theatre 13500 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks, 91423

THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE

The Road Theatre Company Presents  the World Premiere of

“THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE”

Written by Jami Brandli

Directed by Ann Hearn

Dana Keen has died serving as a Navy corpsman in the Iraq War.  It’s now Christmas, and the Keen family is suffering with this tragedy.  Despair and the pain of losing a child, especially at Christmas, cannot be minimalized, and is not something anyone should have to go through.  This emotional world premiere dramedy, “THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE,” will resolve if the Keen family will be torn apart, or find the strength and guidance to be a loving family once again.

Her parents, Larry (David Gianopoulos) and Barbara (Meeghan Holaway), each have their own survival mechanism.  Larry drinking numerous glasses of scotch, and Barbara busying herself preparing the Christmas dinner set the scene for the evening.  Dana’s sister Samantha (Kaitlin Huwe) has taken to involvement in protest movements, changed her name to “S,” and has schooled herself in karate.  She is defiant and planning a protest at the GW bridge that evening.  But, the ghost of Dana (Kara Hume) is ever present:  still very much alive in everyone’s heart and mind.

Christmas dinner guests arrive with the Keen’s exuberant family minister, Pastor Bill Towers (Chet Grissom) and rather ditsy wife, Shirley (Stephanie Erb), who has brought a huge bowl of ambrosia.  But the most important guest is yet to arrive…one that is unexpected…Dana’s Iraqi refugee friend Nasser (Erica Mathlin).  And Nasser may be the Christmas gift everyone needs.

Jami Brandli’s creative script has many twists and turns, with numerous storylines, and brings an excellent ensemble cast together expressing the passion and feelings of each character with great direction by Ann Hearn.  The production is well done… great set, great lighting.

The Road Theatre has brought a fantastic new play, “THROUGH THE EYE OF A NEEDLE,” bringing us the true meaning of love and family.  Another evening in NoHo not to be missed.

Very Independent Filmmaking – Screenwriting – Writing Great Dialogue That’s Real

So I thought I would get back to the nitty-gritty of filmmaking and talk about the fundamentals, or, indeed, THE fundamental – writing the screenplay.

I am just at the beginnings of a screenplay that I hope to film myself, sometime over the next year or so…no pressure.

So, it occurred to me, as I develop these characters and the plot and the subplot and the “why” of everyone and the world they all live in, that it is incredibly important and quite hard in fact to write good dialogue, at least dialogue that feels real and that isn’t boring.

If you listen to the way most people speak, earwigging conversations while waiting in line at the bank, most of it is incredibly boring, especially if it’s one end of a cellphone conversation. Although you could have lots of fun imagining what the person on the other end is saying I guess. But basically, to make the dialogue in your screenplay sound real, you shouldn’t rely on ‘real’ conversations. Does that make any sense?

It’s also worth watching a few films that you particularly like and soak in the words.

How did the screenwriter do such a good job?  What style did she use?  Can you tell the difference between characters just from the dialogue?  Does the dialogue move the story?

What do you like? Scorsese?  John Ford?  Tarantino?  Don’t copy their style, but certainly learn from it.  We can’t all be Aaron Sorkin…one of my faves.  But we can watch and listen and learn.

All artists learn first by mimicking the greats…just don’t get sued.

Once you realize that the dialogue shouldn’t tell the story, the images should do that, then you can really have some fun with the words, rather than excruciatingly relaying details and important facts and, heaven forbid, plot twists.  Film is a visual medium. “Show, don’t tell” really is a thing.

I’m lucky because I have an intent to shoot the feature I am writing, so I can pick places, people and plots that I know I can recreate, at least for this film.  My next film could be set in the future, or on the moon, which might cost a little more to do, but maybe I’ll have the cash to do it by the time I finish writing…who knows!

But back to dialogue.  Listen to people talking.  Do they speak in clear sentences? Do they wait patiently before speaking? Are they completing their thoughts?  Or do they constantly interrupt each other and never make any sense?  Most of the time that’s exactly how they speak.  So use that but make it interesting.  Instead of the price of meat, it’s the next bank heist, replace melons with heart surgery and maybe you’ve got something.

Before I start writing dialogue I already have all my characters, and they all have a back story, one that almost never makes it into the film, but I can draw from if I’m wondering how they would react or who they might side with in an argument.  And I always know the end of all of them.  Do they die? Will they speak out? Are they insane? It all helps.

Once I have done a first draft of a scene I then go back over it to see what I can lose, which is usually a lot. Remember, if you can understand your film without any dialogue at all, just from the stage directions, then you are a genius…but that’s what we are really going for.  A scene where two people can communicate with each other with just a look is always a scene to remember, and that is written. Writers don’t just write dialogue after all. Some of the best writers write very little in fact.

Make sure your conversations aren’t just an excuse for your characters to give each other information, make it more interesting than that.  Plus your primary goal as a screenwriter is to relay information to the audience, which you can do without any of the characters knowing at all. The bridge collapses behind them. We see it from the camera mounted on the hood of the car shooting between the two people sitting in the car’s front seats…they have no idea.  It’s more exciting for the audience if they know something no one in the film does, something terrible or something wonderful. As long as it moves the story along it’s great.

Film dialogue is how characters would speak if they had a few extra seconds to compose their thoughts between lines. It’s just slightly optimized. But it’s very easy to overshoot and end up in soap opera land. Keeping dialogue real but efficient is one of the hardest challenges in screenwriting.

Once you’ve written it and are happy, always, always leave it for a few days (weeks, months or even years) and go back and you will cut it in half, lose it altogether or, at the very least, change it to something infinity better. Space from your work can be all you need to make it great. Just do whatever it takes.  There’s nothing worse than crappy dialogue in a film that is otherwise great – great story, locations, premise, etc. But the way the characters communicate with each other lets it all down. After all,  a good actor can only do so much with poop. Read it aloud…a lot and with others. It’ll be worth every minute.

And for heaven’s sake don’t forget a joke or two even if it’s a thriller, or a horror, or a historical drama. Even Shakespeare had the bit with the dog in it!  It’s one of the most human things that humans do when the poop is really hitting the fan, or the lights go out, or there’s a gun in your face when you least expect it. Be a bit funny…or at least have someone try to be. It could be the best moment of the film.

Well, I have to get back to my screenplay and you have to get back to your very interesting lives. And don’t forget, if you can write it, you can shoot it. So grab a camera and make a film.  It will make you a better writer at the very least.

A caveat to all of this is that, in the end, you write what you like…and nobody really knows anything…

5 Reasons Struggling Artists Should Refinance Their Student Loans

5 Reasons Struggling Artists Should Refinance Their Student Loans

Are you a struggling artist?

Is one of the reasons you’re struggling because your student loan payments are consuming your monthly budget, making it impossible to invest in your future as an artist?

If so, it’s important you think about refinancing your student loans right away.

5 Reasons to Refinance Your Student Loans

By definition, struggling artists are just barely getting by.

When you add in the mounting crisis of student loan debt, many artists are on the verge of trading in their dreams for something more secure. Despite what many politicians have publicly stated, it’s very unlikely student loans will ever be forgiven.

In short, there’s never been a better time than the present to consider refinancing your student loans if you’re a struggling artist.

1. Enjoy a Lower Interest Rate

Without a doubt, the best reason to refinance your student loan is to lock in a lower interest rate. If you’re thinking about refinancing your student loan, it’s most likely because your monthly payment has become unbearable.

Locking in a lower interest rate will mean saving on the total amount you pay back. It can also mean extending how long you have to pay the amount back, which would give you a much smaller monthly payment amount.

2. Take Advantage of a Flexible Repayment Plan

While banks generally aren’t known for their flexibility, many can be much more flexible than the federal government.

For example, some lenders will let you defer your monthly payments if you return to school. Others will offer you temporary forbearance if you’re currently facing an economic hardship.

These types of options can make all the difference when your budget needs some breathing room.

3. Consolidate for Convenience

If you’re a struggling artist, you have enough priorities to juggle. Remembering to pay each of your student loans every month only adds to the list.

Instead, refinancing for the sake of debt consolidation will make life much easier. Just make one payment every month and that’s reasonable enough.

4. You Finally Have Good Credit

Now that you’re out of college and a bit older, you may have much better credit, too.

If that’s the case, refinancing your student loans will definitely lock in a far preferable rate. This improved rate may save you enough to begin financing your artistic endeavors, as well.

5. Release a Cosigner

Did you use a cosigner to originally qualify for your student loans? If so, that could be causing a bit of tension now between you and a loved one, especially if the cosigner could use some a loan of their own.

By refinancing, you are freeing them of this financial obligation.

Refinance Your Student Loans Immediately

If any of the above five reasons to refinance your personal loans sound familiar, it’s imperative that you take action right away.

As we touched on earlier, the student loan crisis is only getting worse.

Soon, it may be impossible to refinance. At the very least, the longer you put off refinancing, the longer you’re paying more than you must.

Now that you understand why you should refinance, it’s time to take the next step and speak with a lender to see what your options are.

New Jersey Opens its Doors to Online Casinos

New Jersey Opens its Doors to Online Casinos

It can be argued that gambling online in New Jersey didn’t really take off as envisaged. It was expected to get off to a flying start as it had elsewhere, but it sort of just trudged along before it managed to gain a foothold in the industry, with the touch paper then being well and truly lit. Since then, online gambling has been growing at a mightily impressive rate, with the trend growing as time goes on.

The year on year growth in terms of the revenue made has been quite astounding and the figures accurately reflect this. In 2014 the gross revenue stood at $123 million, it rose to $149 million in 2015, $197 million in 2016 and then took a huge jump to $246 million in 2017. Year on year growth has exceeded 20% in each of the past three years and this shows just how successful online gambling in New Jersey has become.

Based on that success it comes as no surprise that people are being warned to expect another growth spurt in the not too distant future. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement has confirmed that internet gaming licenses have been applied for by both Ocean Resort and Hard Rock AC. However it remains to be seen whether either place will offer online poker.

In terms of Ocean Resort this announcement comes after they established a multi-year partnership with GAN. The deal sees them being able to provide real-money gambling services for players to enjoy in New Jersey and it would also be a huge step forward in terms of online sports betting too, provided that the ruling from the US Supreme Court goes in their favour that is.

Hard Rock were currently in a position where they were still searching for someone to power their services. They have had numerous options to pick from as they looked to establish themselves in New Jersey; however, it is the Gaming Innovation Group (GiG) that has been confirmed as the best way to go. CEO of GiG, Robin Reed is extremely confident this partnership will result in a ‘stand-out product with the sizzle of the Hard Rock music, entertainment and lifestyle brand’.

New Jersey and online casinos are certainly a match made in heaven it seems and the fact that the year on year growth figures keep rising on a consistent basis, proves that there’s a continued and greater demand by players who are looking to play their favourite games such as slots, blackjack, roulette and poker. This has been confirmed by PartyCasino New Jersey one of the main casino arms of the GVC Group.

It’s also a great move by the state itself too for various different reasons. First of all the regulation of the online casinos means that tax revenue will be generated, providing more money for the state to spend elsewhere and use to their advantage. This has already been successful and with more online casinos being added, the revenue from tax will only increase.

Online casinos which are regulated will also help to provide players with a safe environment where they can gamble too. There are a lot of unlicensed off shore casinos in operation which have stolen funds from players but with regulation in place, gaming audiences will now know the games being enjoyed are always fair and that their funds and details are secure too.

Therefore, it is safe to expect that New Jersey will be one the states to lead the way in making online casino brands acceptable and legitimate. There is no doubt we are still a long way from a complete resolution on the topic, but fans of online gaming and everyone in the industry will definitely be pleased with the progressive made thus far.

LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR @ The Garry Marshall Theatre

LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR

The Garry Marshall Theatre is presenting Neil Simon’s venerable autobiographical classic LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR, at the beautiful Garry Marshall Theatre in Burbank.

It essays Simon’s days working on YOUR SHOW OF SHOWS where he worked alongside of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner writing material for Sid Caesar.  The story is told through the eyes of Lucas (Jason Grasl), who narrates the piece.  First we meet the writing staff, seven nut cases of comedy, all archetypical in individual mirthful mayhem.  They write for one Max Prince (Pat Towne), doing 90 minutes a week on THE MAX PRINCE SHOW for NBC.

Crises strike!  First, the staff and Max have to deal with NBC suits wanting to cut the show to 60 minutes, thus cutting the budget.  Would one staff writer have to be canned?  Then they have to deal with network interference.  Then of course, there’s Max himself, a bundle of neuroses wrapped around booze and pills.  The staff deals with each issue with their individual senses of humor creating a controlled chaos that makes up this show.

The first act is very funny, the humor wrapped around the personalities of the staff.

Among the personas are Ira the hypochondriac (Jeff Campenella), Kenny the logician (Cornelius Jones Jr.), a very pregnant Carol (Lanisa Renee Frederick), and the wisecracking clotheshorse Milt (Tay Mayberry).  The plot kicks in after we meet the cadre of scribes and Max (Pat Towne) himself, plus his cute secretary Helen (Jessica Joy).  The second act gets a bit serious with the issue of network interference and the rise of the half-hour sit-com replacing the variety format on television.

LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR is a definite “go-see”.  The actors work well together, creating an ensemble of fun, punching us with Mr. Simon’s great one-liners and set-ups in rapid succession, then getting serious in Act 2.  The set, by Alex Calle, is highly utile and the costumes are true to the 1953 period.

Explore the NoHo Farmers Market

We all know eating locally sourced produce and foods is good for the environment. But aside from that (important) reason, local foods mean less time traveling from garden to market, which means fresh! And fresh is best when it comes to taste. Not only that, but also by purchasing from local growers, you are helping to sustain the local economy. Buying from farmers and growers means that they get to keep more of the earnings that otherwise would go to transportation costs.

Many of the farmers and vendors at our NoHo Farmers Market operate family-run farms and businesses. Producing high-quality products is their passion and they stake their reputation on that weekly.

Wandering through the aisles of our weekly farmers market will put you in touch with the heart of our community. And it is a place where you enjoy the freshest produce as well as get a fabulous bite to eat. Artisan vendors offer handcrafted jewelry, unique clothing pieces, and other treasure. Skora Productions presents Damaged Furniture

Skora Productions presents “Damaged Furniture” at Whitefire Theatre.

Written by Howard Skora
Directed by Jim Fall

The wonderful Whitefire Theatre is host to yet another world premiere.

“Damaged Furniture” is a comedy about an LA actor, almost aging out of the Hollywood system, who gets the news from his agent about a new series being built around his small role as a bi-sexual robot in a sci-fi TV drama, propelling him into the echelons of “working actor” just as he steps off a plane in New York to attend his uncle’s funeral.

thumbnail 3. Alex Skuby and Mo Collins

This not so classic set-up is the framework for this hilarious play.  Doug, the actor, ends up being too late for the service, held at his family’s furniture store in Brooklyn.  His Aunt Laurie is still in the store sobbing when he arrives, and is not impressed with his tardiness.  Especially since Doug’s sister Gina had to fill in for him with the eulogy…”she was terrible.” She also describes in gruesome detail how his uncle died, fulfilling his tawdry and apparently rampant sexual desires for upholstered recliners and one in particular, a Versace original, or “the whore” as his aunt prefers to refer to it, which collapsed during the act in what one can only imagine was a vigorous enough way to end poor old uncle.

Next we meet the sister Gina who explains that their father Phil has had a recent bout with eye cancer, now has a glass eye and not to look at it or talk about it as he would get upset. Doug, who had no idea that his father was ill, is furious and begins to realize why he left for LA all those years ago.  His mother Irene reminds him why all the more and, by the time his alcoholic father makes his sickly entrance, we are all wishing Doug a swift return to La La land. His family, however, has other plans.

I could go on, but I feel I should leave you all with many unanswered questions and an urge to see the show, which you absolutely should.

This is a brilliant, laugh-out-loud comedy with gorgeously awful characters to love.  Of course, every single actor is fantastic, I really couldn’t single anyone out…no point.  But the writing is the star here.  Howard Skora has invented quite a kooky and ridiculous lot.  All brimming with psychosis and bitterness and unspoken fears…hilarious.  The humor is loud and frank and beautifully wrought by these impressive actors,  their perfect timing and their delicious characters.  Bravo to the director Jim Fall for giving the words and the actors the room they needed to be this good.

I highly recommend “Damaged Furniture” at The Whitefire Theatre.

Comic books and the Big Screen

Comic Book Sales are on the Rise – Here’s why

2016 saw the comic book industry experience its best year of sales in almost two decades. The trend continued through 2017 and into 2018, with sales of titles accelerating to new heights. Comic books and the Big Screen

What’s driven the recent rise the appreciation of comic books as a medium of entertainment? Many attribute it to the many movie franchises created by the comic publishing companies. Revolutionary developments in CGI technology have allowed comic books to come to life on the big screen, with action sequences and graphics that seem completely real.

Marvel Studios Breaking New Ground

Leading the way in cinematic production is Marvel. The studio has grown in leaps and bounds over the last few decades to establish a dominant presence in modern cinema entertainment. Captain America: Civil war, performed better than expected at the box office, smashing records and drawing crowds over its release weekend of July the 27th.

Keeping Up with Popular Trends

The highlight of 2017 for Marvel Studios came in the release of Spiderman: Homecoming. The franchise grows from strength to strength with fans and critics praising the fresh approach to the characters. Marvel continues to adapt to evolving trends and rely on their ability to tell a spellbinding story packed with action and drama.

Black Panther has set box office records in its first weekend of opening. The movie received a lot of hype in the media, making it one of the most successful comic book movies of all time. The Black Panther franchise is sure to see further stories in the future.

What’s to come in the Future for Marvel?

Marvel has pulled out all of the stops for releases in 2018. The most anticipated release of the year comes in the form of Spiderman’s nemesis, Venom. The alien symbiote from space gets its slot in the big-time to tell the Venom story from a different perspective.

Toward the end of the year, we will see the release of the second movie in the Deadpool franchise. Ryan Reynolds brought the killer-for-hire, with a smart mouth, to international infamy with the first movie. The cross-over theme continues in the second movie, named DP2, and the X-Men are called in to help Dead pool battle Cable.

DC Comics

DC is another behemoth of the comic book to silver screen transition. The Superman and Batman franchises have experienced tremendous success in theaters, with fans flocking to see the last Superman Vs. Batman crossover. Suicide squad was another favorite release that was followed shortly by Wonder Woman, and then the Justice League. DC Comics have wasted no time cementing their DC Extended Universe brand into the cinematic realm of entertainment.

Independent Houses

Apart from DC and Marvel, there are a few other comic books that have made the crossover into TV series. The popularity of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” has captivated viewers across the globe for over eight seasons and is still going strong. When the Walking Dead finished its first season, a mint 1st edition copy of the comic book created by the independent house, Image comics, was retailing on eBay for over $2,500.

New entries into the market from independent publishing houses include; Preacher, The Tick, iZombie, and Gotham. Independent houses seem to do best with TV series, and their popularity continues to soar alongside the more prominent brands Marvel Studios and DC Extended universe.

The Rise of Online Comic Books

As the print era died out near the end of the Nineties, the rise of the internet gave comic books a reason to adapt to changing consumer climates. Instead of running and hiding away from the internet revolution, comic book companies embraced it and began to release their titles online.

Now you can buy comics online from any comic book publishing house, for a fraction of the price of a physical book.

Take Your Power Back – Seven Lovely Women Dance for Seven Lovely Sins

Mamouna Rouge Et Les Ambianceuses Presents – “Shake That Sin”

Take Your Power Back – Seven Lovely Women Dance for Seven Lovely Sins

Just the other week I had the great pleasure of seeing the electrifying Mamouna Rouge Et Les Ambianceuses performing  “Shake That Sin,” their powerful and often comical dance interpretation of the seven deadly sins.

Lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy and pride, if you need a reminder.  Seven deadly sins that have been adapted brilliantly and beautifully by this gifted group of dancers.  Mamouna Rouge and Et Les Ambianceuses is a Paris, France based dance group headed by the extremely talented choreographer Mamouna Rouge who was inspired by the deeply felt and mostly female centric societal issues we have with our bodies, ethnicities and social backgrounds.  These are subjects that can separate us just as easily as bring us together, but here they are presented as a celebration of our female unity powerfully and poetically in a magnificent union of dance and defiance.

This dance group has their roots firmly in urban African dance like Coupe-Decale (Ivory Coast), Kuduro (Angola), N’Dombolo (Congo) but they also fill the piece with nods to dance from around the world. Belly dancing, modern jazz, burlesque, samba, traditional African dance, Haka (South Pacific Inlands), Kizomba, Funana…and on and on and on.

Mamouna Rouge brings with her a select few of her French troupe and, together with some L.A. dancers, they perform these inspiring and entertaining routines.  She teaches workshops at the prestigious Paris dance school Le Centre de Danse du Marais, as well as around the world and has clearly inspired this eclectic group of dancers.  They are a hugely relatable and beautifully diverse group of women, with glorious curves and bums and tummies and an awful lot of rhythm.

This is a celebration of humanity, in all the flaws of our sins as well as the glory of our perfections.  In this 60 or so minutes of non-stop music and movement and wildly imaginative interpretative and rhythm-driven dance, each routine embodies sin and gives us an answer to it.  A problem and a solution all wrapped up in the kind of dance that speaks directly to the expression deep within our souls.

“Shake That Sin – Take Your Power Back” is a direct response to the #METOO and #timesup movements and with the kind of power that only women have and it encourages us to use this power to express ourselves without fear to initiate real and lasting change in our world.

Be empowered ladies, seek out Mamouna Rouge and feel the struggle and the life-force of her dance  pass through her and into you. Take that power and make change happen, in your life, on your universal sisters’ lives and all around you.

If you are lucky enough to experience Mamouna Rouge and all she represents, you will also be treated to a very special dance class after the performance.  In this class she guides you through the fierce power of African dance to become an unapologetic warrior of not only her dance, but her inclusive and empowering spirit. You will also have a lot of fun unleashing your warrior within, whether you are young or old, man or women, black, brown or white, you will find your power and learn how to wiggle it, bounce it and spread it all around…
