Learn more about the Club Pilates NoHo Teacher Training Program

What Rachel has to say about her Pilates Journey… “Acting and performing has always been my biggest passion. Being able to express myself, I give truth, transparency and compassion to the roles I play. Being a woman in the acting industry is tough. There isn’t much positivity or honesty around who you are, your age, your weight, your look and the way you portray yourself. Just the same, it’s hard for all women living in this world today. I struggled immensely with these issues growing up.

Like most women (and men) in our society do, I try and love and care for myself better each day. When I found Pilates, it felt right. I connected with it. Not only was it the first exercise I could ever get myself to do consistently, it matched internally with what I desired. Practicing Pilates allowed me to feel connected to my inner and outer being as a whole. I felt stronger and more comfortable with myself as a being in progress.

When I realized teaching could be something I could do for a living, I was thrilled. It was a challenge to work throughout my training, but I felt invigorated. I wanted to use my talent for performing to encourage other women to feel connected and accomplished in their own practice. Now as I begin my teaching journey, it is my absolute favorite part! The part of me that enjoys standing up in front of people and truly being seen, allows me to perform the greatest act which is give to these wonderful men and women, our clients, in a loving and respectful way. I understand the struggle to live in this society and I want to help each person feel stronger, better and more accepting of themselves. My Pilates Teacher Training journey has truly been a gift.”

Finding Money to Pay College Bills Out of Pocket

You’ve saved for your child’s college education through the years, helped your child research schools, and supervised the application process.

Now, thankfully, your child is in college. But you probably can’t disappear just yet–there are still bills to pay. Maybe you underestimated exactly how much financial aid would cover. Or perhaps you knew all along that you’d have to use some of your own resources or take out more loans. In any case, you’ll need to come up with some money soon. So where should you look?

Your paycheck

If you can afford it, applying part of your paycheck to your child’s college bills is probably the easiest route. You won’t have any paperwork to fill out or messy calculations at tax time, and you can leave your retirement accounts and life insurance intact.

Most colleges bill once each semester. To have enough money saved to meet each semester’s bill, consider setting aside an amount from each paycheck as soon as you get it, rather than saving whatever is left at the end of the month. As you accumulate money, you should put it somewhere safe (e.g., a savings account, money market account, or certificate of deposit) because of your short time frame. Some colleges, however, offer quarterly or monthly bills in an effort to make payment easier for you. Colleges may even offer you a tuition discount if you allow them to debit your account directly. In addition, some private companies now offer a 10-month payment plan coordinated with individual colleges.

The main drawback to using your paycheck as a source of cash for college bills is that this consistent outflow of cash over a period of months or years may leave you financially strapped to invest for other goals. To determine how much of a contribution you can manage (if any), you’ll need to prepare a detailed budget of your household income and expenses.

Your savings and investments

The next logical place to look for spare funds is your savings and investments. This category encompasses everything from savings accounts and money market accounts to stocks, mutual funds, and real estate holdings. Not surprisingly, it can be difficult to figure out which source to use. Generally speaking, withdrawing from your savings accounts is the easier route. Again, no applications or independent approvals are necessary (except perhaps from your spouse!). Also, no tax penalties are associated with such withdrawals. And the fact that savings accounts generally earn the lowest rates of return means that you don’t have to worry about missing out on high returns. However, try to keep at least three to six months’ worth of savings on hand for emergencies.

The process is a bit more complicated with investments. Though most investments are easily liquidated (i.e., converted to cash), it’s not always easy to know which ones to liquidate. The answer depends in part on each investment’s rate of return, future prospects, and potential capital gain (or loss) if sold and the tax consequences. If you’re unsure which investments to liquidate, a professional financial planner can help you sort through the possibilities.

If you have a 529 savings plan or a 529 prepaid tuition plan, you’ll need to notify the plan administrator before you make a withdrawal. Check the specific rules of your plan for more information. If you have a Coverdell education savings account, keep in mind that all withdrawals must be made before the beneficiary reaches age 30 (unless the beneficiary has special needs).

Your home

If you’re one of the lucky ones whose home has increased in value over the years, you can usually tap this equity for college bills by taking out a home equity loan. The loan can be structured as either a revolving line of credit (you’re approved for a certain amount and you tap the funds periodically as you need them) or a second mortgage (you receive one lump sum). The main advantage of a home equity loan is that interest payments are usually tax deductible. And because your home serves as collateral for the loan, the interest rate is likely to be lower than on an unsecured loan. However, because the loan is now tied to your house, your lender can foreclose on your home if you default.

Your life insurance

If you have a cash value life insurance policy, you might decide to use part of the cash value that has built up inside the policy by making a withdrawal or taking out a loan, or using some combination of the two. For withdrawals, the amount that you withdraw is generally limited to a percentage of your cash value and varies by policy and company. The main drawback is that such withdrawals decrease your death benefit (i.e., the sum of cash that the insurance company pays at your death). For policy loans, you are likewise allowed to borrow up to a specified percentage of your cash value. However, if you die with an outstanding loan against your policy, your death benefit is reduced by the amount of the outstanding loan and interest. For more information, contact your insurance agent.

Private loan/PLUS Loan

If the idea of putting your home at risk with a home equity loan scares you, then you might consider obtaining a personal (unsecured) loan from a private financial institution. To get approved, you’ll likely need a good credit history.

If you’re looking for a loan that’s college-specific, the federal government’s Parent PLUS Loan may be a good option. Under this program, parents can borrow up to the full cost of their child’s college education, less any financial aid received. The loan is obtained directly from the federal government. Importantly, PLUS Loans aren’t based on your child’s financial need. However, you’ll need to pass a credit check.

Your retirement plans

By the time your child’s in college, it’s likely that you’ll have at least some money saved in one or more retirement accounts, such as an IRA or an employer-sponsored plan like a 401(k). Should you tap these funds? As a general rule, most planners don’t recommend using your retirement funds to pay college bills. You’ll need the money in retirement, and you’ll miss out on the growth that would have occurred had you not withdrawn the money.

However, there may be instances where you need (or want) to use your retirement funds. With IRAs (traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs), you can withdraw funds at any age, penalty free, to pay your child’s college bills (“qualified higher education expenses,” as the IRS likes to call them). However, you may owe income tax on your withdrawals; consult the appropriate IRS publication on your type of IRA, or speak with a tax professional. Be aware that once you withdraw the money, it can’t be paid back like a loan.

Unfortunately, if you withdraw funds from an employer-sponsored retirement plan like a 401(k) or 403(b) and you’re under age 59½, you’ll pay a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty. Keep in mind, too, that all withdrawals will be added to your taxable income for the year. Instead of withdrawing funds, another option is to borrow the money, assuming your company’s plan allows it (check with your human resources manager). By borrowing instead of withdrawing, you avoid taxes and penalties. However, most plans require you to pay back the entire loan within five years (you can start to repay right away through a payroll deduction) or immediately if you leave the company.

Your child’s savings

In finding spare change for college bills, leave no stone unturned. Does your child have any income or assets that could be used? Earnings from a part-time or summer job? What about that vintage lunch box collection collecting dust in your child’s closet, or those $100 savings bonds that your child receives from Aunt Agnes every year? By contributing even a portion of the cost, your child is likely to feel more invested in his or her education.

Iri “Rhythm”

Yes! This is the word we screamed when we first came across Iri and her song “Rhythm” from her debut album “Groove It.”

So we’re dance fanatics and follow some awesome dancers, both right here in the NoHo Arts District and all over the world. We were in an Instagram dance spiral when we watched this video and loved the song and choreo. We had to find out more. It was hard because Iri’s label doesn’t give us access to her videos and she was hard to find on Spotify. But we didn’t give up.

Thanks, Black Fal Films for posting the video introducing us to Iri and the sweet choreo of Marimo Kanno.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Bg8uLPNhuVv/

When a song makes you get out of your seat and dance, you know it’s a jam.

“Rhythm” starts out like a buddah lounge melody, something you would hear walking the streets of Miami before the place gets poppin’. Then the loungy music stops and she sings a capella. The simple, sexy drums drop and her voice flows over the rhythm like a wave of water. They go together like peanut butter and jelly.

We were listening to her (loud) and someone asked: “What’s she saying?” We don’t know and, frankly, we don’t care. It’s tough to make out the language at first because you’re engrossed in the rhythm. But she’s singing in Japanese because you hear “watashi wa” in the chorus. Until then you assume she’s singing in English because she sprinkles in English words throughout. You can play the music version of “Where’s Waldo?” and see if you can catch the English words. Iri’s song “Rhythm” is aptly named because the rhythm makes the song soothing to the ear and makes you move.

We started with her first release and have worked our way up to her latest release, “Juice,” which is just as awesome. Check out “Fruits” for another groove.

So get out of your seat and sway, stomp and step to Iri.

Here’s how to keep your eye on her and hopefully we’ll get to see her in Los Angeles sometime soon.

Keep making music that moves us.

Budget-Friendly Home Improvements That Provide The Best Return on Your Investment

There are many reasons homeowners decide to upgrade, update, or renovate their homes.

Some want to make their home more appealing or functional for them while they live there, but they want to be sure any updates they make will improve the value of their home. Whatever your reason is, the changes you make to your home can serve both purposes: make it more what you want it to be and increase its value so you can command a higher price should you decide to put it on the market. Before making any decisions, you should consider the cost versus the value and decide if it is a worthy investment.

Start with Planning

Before starting any remodel or upgrade projects, you should start out with a clear path or plan on what you want to accomplish and how you will get it done. Don’t rush into anything without thinking about important factors like how long you plan to live in your home and what you can realistically accomplish based on your financial situation. If you are planning to sell your home, you should talk to your realtor and get their advice.

The Kitchen

Your kitchen is considered to be the heart of the home and definitely a room that should be given extra attention. There are many ways you can make improvements to your kitchen without completely gutting it out and starting over with all new appliances, fixtures, and flooring. More modest updates will still be a good return on your investment. A minor kitchen remodel will recoup 80 percent of its cost, according to Remodeling Magazine, while a major midrange kitchen remodel only has a 65 percent return on investment. Some of the modifications you can do in your kitchen are:

  • Replace the countertop
  • Get new handles and pulls
  • Add under-cabinet lighting
  • Replace overhead lighting with higher watt bulbs or new fixtures
  • Paint an accent wall
  • Replace cabinet doors
  • Add a backsplash

The Bathroom

Outdated bathrooms are a great place to start making some minor modifications that will definitely increase the value of your home. If a total bathroom remodel is beyond your means, don’t’ worry. You can still revamp your bathroom, giving it a fresh new look without having to do any expensive renovations. Studies have shown a minor bathroom remodel can provide a 102% return on investment, and you don’t have to spend a fortune to make big upgrades. Some of the modifications you can make to your bathroom are:

  • Replace the mirrors
  • Re-grout tile
  • Replace caulk around the toilet, tub, and shower
  • Change the lighting
  • Re-finish the vanity

Paint Your Walls

One of the most cost-effective updates you can make to your home is to paint your walls. Clean new paint can hide visual defects, lighten up your rooms, and give your entire house a clean and fresh look. Consider adding an accent wall in one or more of your rooms. Painting one wall a different color than the others can add some style and elegance to your rooms.

Replace Your Windows

Replacing old windows can brighten a room. Although replacing windows can be costly, there are many benefits. Rather than replacing all your windows, select a few that are currently in the worst shape in terms of how they look and how well they are sealed. In addition to looking better, new windows can reduce energy costs if the older ones leak.

Your Front Door

First impressions matter and your front door is the first impression a potential buyer sees before they walk into your home. You can either replace the door with a new one or if funds are limited, try repainting or refinishing the old one to make it look fresh, clean, and new.

Your Floors

The condition of your floors has a huge impact on how your house comes across to potential buyers. Many people place a premium on hardwood floors so if money is not an issue for you, consider replacing old flooring or carpeting with hardwood. However, because it can be very costly, there are other options available to you. One option is to select one large room, like your living room, and install the hardwood floors there. You can also replace your old flooring with carpeting which is a much less costly option. For those with very limited finances and old carpeting in their homes, you can hire a professional carpet cleaner or even rent a machine and steam clean your carpets yourself.

No matter what your reason is for wanting to update and upgrade your home, there are many ways to accomplish your goal without spending more money than you have.

My Son The Waiter – A Jewish Tragedy

Philip Roger Roy and Presley Theatre Corp Present “My Son The Waiter – A Jewish Tragedy” at The Colony Theatre.

Brad Zimmerman has spent the better part of the last 30 years as a waiter.

In LA, of course, we are extremely familiar with that most heroic of hybrids, the actor/waiter, but for Mr Zimmerman’s family it was a particularly hard pill to swallow. Hence the ‘Jewish tragedy.’

This performance, part stand up, part monologue, is an homage to Zimmerman’s life.  A testimony to his belief in his choice to act, regardless of how long it took, regardless of how many baskets of bread or bad tips or his families hopes and dreams of an easier life for him.

thumbnail 028

His set is his journey.  From college, switching majors to acting, to New York, where his hundreds of acting classes and failed auditions surely helped to develop his beautiful sarcasm and hilarious bitterness. After a couple of decades of acting abuse, he took a stand up class and finally found a career.  Opening for Joan Rivers and George Carlin, he took his failures and crushing defeats and turned them into classic, laugh-out-loud jokes.  His pathetic love life, his hopeful mother, his dear departed father, his lazy work ethic with regard to his long-term work in restaurants…all stellar material, full and rich and authentic and familiar.

Mr Zimmerman is a clever man.  He is also a very, very funny man and his honesty and openness make for the most perfect stand up, one that moves us while it makes us cry with laughter.  He is a comedian’s comedian, as attested by Carlin and Rivers and many other legends who have worked with him.  I cannot encourage you enough to spend an hour or so with this brilliant, bittersweet wit…you will not regret it.

“My Son The Waiter – A Jewish Tragedy”

Written by and Starring Brad Zimmerman

Running from April 19 through June 10, Thursday, 3pm & 8pm, Friday 8pm, Saturday 3pm & 8pm, Sunday 3pm.

The Colony Theatre, 555 N. Third Street, Burbank, CA 91502

The Best Arts Cities In The World

The Best Arts Cities In The World

Every city in the world has its art. Whether it’s in the form of a museum, street art, theatre shows or street performers, any art fan will know how to dig out even the hardest-to-find artwork. However, while every city might have its art, there are some that are famed for it and we’ve decided to take a deeper look into a few of the best.

Paris, France

Get your ehic card renewal underway, pack up those bags and don the beret – it’s off to Paris we go! Not only is Paris known as a city of love, but it’s also one of the world’s hotspots for all things art. No matter what part of the city you’re in, you’ll always come across something memorable, whether it’s one of the 150+ museums enriching the city or the street artwork climbing every street corner you pass. Of course, art lovers will be drawn to the Louvre, but with the likes of Musee Rodin or L’Orangerie around too, you’ll need plenty of time to explore it all.

Tokyo, Japan

There’s no defined art district in Tokyo, but that’s part of the city’s charm. With galleries and museums dotted all over the city and while moving between each one can seek like a miles-long trek, it’s certainly worth the aching feet at the end of the day. With the Mori Art Museum, National Art Centre and the SCAI The Bathhouse offering a mix of different art styles, the best place for art is actually on the streets. From street performers to outfits worthy of the most prestigious of stages, there’s plenty to enjoy in Tokyo.

London, UK

London is filled with galleries, museums and let’s not forget the world-famous West End. The National Gallery is a good place to start if you want to see a bit of everything, with works from the like of Vincent van Gogh and John Constable. From there, you can take a trip to the Tate Modern to gawk at some of the best modern art that the world has to offer, including pieces from Picasso and Andy Warhol. The Saatchi gallery is a must for anyone looking for something a little more controversial, or any walk around London’s streets will take you past plenty of incredible street art. Then, of course, it’s time to stop for a show in the West End. With global favourites like Les Miserables, The Lion King and Wicked on offer, it’s well worth investing in a ticket.

Florence, Italy

Fans of Renaissance art will find that Florence is practically heaven for the heart and mind.  With works from Michelangelo, including the famed David sculpture, alongside offerings from Botticelli and Raphael, there’s plenty to see and enjoy. The city itself is pretty much a work of art, managing a perfect balance between modern and historical, so a simple walk through Florentine streets can feel like a trip through an art gallery. If you want a break from the Renaissance, the Centro di Cultura Contemporanea Strozzina has a host of modern pieces to marvel.

Hollywood, USA

Finally, we, of course, couldn’t forget Hollywood! From its world-renown movie industry to its rich theatre performances from new and established writers and actors, there’s no shortage of things to do, see and listen to here. Northern Hollywood, in particular, is, of course, a hotspot for arts, but taking a trip to Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk, the Gallery Of Amazing Things or even the well-kept secret that is Studio18 can give you an insight into the gallery side of Hollywood’s art centre.

Like we mentioned previously, every city has it’s art in some form, but the cities we’ve listed here are some of the biggest and best for arts of all kinds. Whether you’re a fan of art history and are likely to spend your time in national galleries, or you’re more of a theatre fan and can think of nothing better than seeing every show on the West End, now is as good of a time as any to get started in doing exactly that.

Theatre 68 Presents Death Before Cocktails

A death can make for an interesting beginning, and in “Death before Cocktails” the death in question is the twin sister of the reluctant heroine Lana.

The dead sister, whose suicide brought on by years of illness and a preoccupation with the dramatic, writes in her predictable note that she wishes to be cremated and that her wake should be held in this particular bar where the three most important people in her life have now been ceremoniously gathered.  Her sister Lana, Lana’s ex-husband Clive and her ex-boyfriend Will. They are also joined by Will’s newly found evangelical daughter Ruth and Clive’s newly found flamboyant dentist boyfriend Mario.

In Will’s dusty bar in Palm Springs these three erstwhile companions and their unsuspecting sidekicks trade secrets, memories, truths and hidden desires.  Their lives have intersected many times in many ways over the years and not always politely.  While they struggle to make sense of this untimely death they each have their moments of epiphany and candor, tenderness and betrayal.  It’s a little like “Waiting for Godot” but with more laughs and a deeper understanding that Godot will not be attending.

The actors are excellent, fresh, funny, real and clearly thoroughly enjoying the words, the story and the cunning revelations.  It’s directed with a lightness that gives them all the room they need.

The writer Laureen Vonnegut is highly accomplished and no stranger to fiction, having written novels, short stories, screenplays and other plays.  This is her latest play and she handles the fascinating and charmingly familiar lives of these characters, at least these moments that we see, with the kind of philosophical humor held by only the cleverest of writers.  The characters are all horribly flawed of course, as only the best people are, but they accept it, debate it and move on…not cured but not doomed either.

“Death Before Cocktails” is like staying up all night with your very favorite people where nothing is off limits, there is absolutely nothing to lose and forgiveness is served with the morning coffee.  Ms Vonnegut brings wit and a little bit of glamor to her characters who are all still just struggling to survive, like the rest of us.  It’s a really lovely, funny, fascinating play and I highly recommend it.

It’s a fairly short run, so don’t dawdle, get your tickets soon and join them all at the bar…

The Whitefire Theatre Presents Company Shorts

“Company Shorts” at the Whitefire Theatre runs Tuesdays at 8PM, April 17 – May 22.

The Whitefire is becoming the busiest theatre in LA!

Their latest production, “Company Shorts,” is in its fourth year now and this year’s group of very short plays is a non-stop explosion of brilliance.  It’s hard to catch your breath in fact, the laughs are that constant.

The subjects are varied and fantastical, shocking and sweet, knowing and a bit surreal, all the while with a firm nod to the kind of comic genius you would find on SNL…on a good night.  Some of the sketches felt a bit Monty Pythonesque, which I loved of course.  But whether you like watching mice discuss avoiding death, nail technicians hating on customers or a man’s porn secret catapulting him to unwanted fame, you will certainly laugh, which is vital and meaningful in today’s terrifying world.

How “Team Whitefire” has the time and the energy to support all this feverish development of original works I will never know, although I am told there is a cot up in the office for napping emergencies I presume.  But seriously, the extremely high quality of the work that this little theatre in Sherman Oaks produces is pretty astounding.  They give fledgling writers and actors an amazing opportunity to tell stories in their own unique voices and they always seem to pack the house.

I could see some of these shorts being developed into longer plays, but for the most part, it’s a celebration of the ‘short’ genre and all its wild possibilities to explore dark humor and bitingly good cynicism.

I highly recommend “Company Shorts” at The Whitefire, it’s only on once a week, Tuesdays at 8 pm and only until May 22nd…so don’t dawdle!!

THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE HISTORIC OIL CAN HARRY’S: PART 3 OF 3

A one-on-one with Historic Oil Can Harry’s resident DJ RICK DOMINGUEZ

2018 is the 50th Anniversary of Studio City’s Historic Oil Can Harry’s. A Los Angeles landmark as much as an American architectural icon. Its simple mission statement has always been to be a sanctuary for the LGBT community to come together & Dance. That mission statement is still the same today: DANCE. DANCE. DANCE.

I had the chance to sit with resident DJ Rick Dominguez on a Tuesday night, just before he started his set at The Can. To my surprise, he enlightened me about the George Michael, Janet Jackson & Oil Can Harry’s connection…

Waide– Hey, Rick, thank you for taking the time to sit and talk about Oil Can’s history and your history with me. You were born and raised in Deming, New Mexico. Who were your favorite artists & favorite songs growing up?

Rick Dominguez– I fell hard for the disco craze even though I wasn’t old enough to go to nightclubs. I dreamt of how amazing they must be, but definitely, my fav was Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls” album and her follow up, “On the Radio” Greatest Hits. They were so overplayed on my Panasonic turntable, I wore out the grooves! I also loved ELO’s “Discovery” and “Time” and Supertramp’s “Breakfast In America” … but back to your question… fav artists were, Donna Summer, ELO, Bee Gees, Supertramp, Lionel Richie & the Commodores, Foreigner, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Gap Band, Alan Parsons Project and Kenny Rogers… ahh… there’s the country thing! Fav songs were “Lucky” and “No More Tears: Enough is Enough” from Donna Summer. “Last Train to London” and “Ticket to The Moon” by ELO. The entire “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack and “Too Much Heaven,” “Tragedy,” and “Love You Inside Out” from The Bee Gees. Supertramp’s “The Logical Song” and “Goodbye Stranger.”  The Commodores’ “Sail On,” “Still,” “Three Times A Lady”… Foreigner’s “Double Vision” and “Urgent” … EWF (Earth, Wind & Fire) “Let’s Groove Tonight,” “Fantasy,” “Boogie Wonderland”… The Gap Band, “Early In the Morning,” “BurnRubber,” “You Dropped A Bomb On Me” … Outstanding!… and “Nothing Comes To Sleepers”…  APP (Alan Parsons Project) “Time,” “Eye In the Sky,” and “Old and Wise,” and Kenny Rogers with Dolly, “Islands In the Stream,” “She Believes In Me,” “Lady,” and “Through The Years,” which I picked as our graduation song. Omg, I could go on and on…bad question… HA!!… Oh, my God, I totally forgot about my number one artist growing up. George Michael. How could I forget him? LOL! He and I were the same age and he literally wrote my life in his music. I moved here right when “Young Guns” and “Bad Boys” came out and I was living that. Then, I went through my first heartache right when “Careless Whisper” came along. Then, through “Faith” with “One More Try” and “Father Figure” and “I Want Your Sex” I was completely in sync. Then, came “Older” … oh, my God… Every song seemed to fit my life perfectly dealing with HIV and losing a partner and infidelities. Anyway… he was my biggest influence in Dance Music. Michael Jackson was my biggest influence in dancing.

{youtube}6W0d9xMhZbo{/youtube}

Waide- What inspired you to go into DJing? Any specific event?

Rick– Yes! I knew very early on that this is what I wanted to be. I was probably 14 when I stepped into a dance at our local Knights of Columbus hall called the LULAC. Disco was in full bloom, and proudly displayed up on that stage, was this handsome, handle bar mustached, long haired God, spinning the records with all these lights behind him making everybody dance! “Ring My Bell” was blaring and people were having the time of their lives on that dance floor… I wanted to create that magic I felt and pass it on to everyone I could… for the rest of my life.

Waide– When did you move to L.A. and what were some of the odd-jobs you held before landing a DJ job?

Rick- I moved to LA in 1983. I started off as a waiter at a Holiday Inn, then moved on to Shakey’s, and within a year I landed a job at Music Plus, where I quickly thrived and became a manager by *1984…otherwise known as the best year ever in pop music! That’s a fact! (*Billboard Magazine; see below) I got my first club gig shortly after I invested in buying my technic 1200 turntables and mixer where I would practice mixing on my 12” vinyl collection nonstop every night after work and weekends. I used to hang out at this small little bar in West Covina called Scene One. I wasn’t even 21 yet, but the owners loved me, and once they heard I was looking to be a club DJ, they quickly gave me my first break. From there, I of course, took on many careers, but always maintained a DJ club gig ever since. Whether it was one night at one club a week, or seven nights a week at four different clubs! But my day jobs went from working at UPS, to banking, to audio engineer for Hollywood Sound Systems and finally at Clear Channel in Burbank where I became an on-air personality “Gig” on Star 98.7 and moved on to assistant programming director for Hot 92.3.

Waide– The life of a DJ, eh?… you teach line-dancing at Sunset Kaiser Permanente, tell us about what you do.

Rick- I’m going on nearly 10 years now with their ‘Get Fit Program,’ designed to help employees do some extra cardio and fitness during their lunch hour. I’ve since branches out to several local branches to try and spread the fun.  We don’t call it just line dancing, though. I had to add Hip-hop and Latin line dancing, otherwise, it wouldn’t appeal to many staff members!

Waide– Stagecoach 2018! You’re one of the headlining DJs and Choreographers. Tell us about it.

Rick- Yes! This is going to be an epic event for me! Last year I was brought in as a line dance instructor and part of the dance team at the Honkytonk Stage! This year, I’ve been selected to not only be part of the dance team and a featured instructor, where I’ll be teaching four of my dances during my DJ sets, including my latest dance, “Make A Little Love,” as well as club favorites, “Blue Jeans On” and “You Look Good” and a fun club contra dance appropriately called “Honkytonk County Line.” But ALSO, as a featured DJ, as well!! I’ll be working a different shift everyday starting with Friday, April 27th from 10am-1:30pm, Saturday the 28th from 5pm-8pm, and Sunday the 29th from 1:30pm-5pm! Be sure and Swing by for a little ‘Honkytonk’ dancing fun if you’re planning on hitting this amazing event! Check the website for all times and dances being taught @ http://www.stagecoachfestival.com/honkytonk-schedule

Waide– Oil Can Harry’s is celebrating its 50Anniversary! You’ve been a resident DJ & Choreographer here for many years. What are your nights & what do you teach? Give us a time-line & history:

Rick- Yup! 25 years and counting… well, I started back in 1993 as a backup DJ and very quickly fell into a regular shift. Former Owner, Bob Tomasino, took me under his wing and through the good and bad times he shaped me into a regular fixture, helping me become the resident DJ and launch many successful nights that to this day are still packing the dance floor here! We kicked off the Saturday Night Retro-Disco over 23 years ago, and it’s been a huge celebration ever since! I ran that night for about 20 of those years with guest performances from Thelma Houston, Jessica Williams, Cynthia Manley, Maxine Nightingale, and most recently, Randy Jones, from the Village People…YMCA! ha-ha!  Now, as for the other nights, I’ve also become a celebrated Country DJ and Line Dance Instructor and I owe all of that to my residency at OCH! We’ve been running a great County-Western dance night we call TGIF for many many years and have had some success with Tuesdays and Thursdays up until recently. Tuesdays are still there for anyone that’s ready to learn as many of these awesome line dances that fill our floors, as they can! Thursdays have since become Salsa Night… but, that’s another story!  I started teaching and choreographing line dances about 17 years ago with absolutely no dance background other than dancing every night of the week for decades when I moved to California. HA! I decided I could do that, teaching became a passion of mine that lead to choreography and my first two dances, “Crossing the Border” and my very first one “J-Rad” are still local club favorites. The story behind J-Rad is bitter-sweet. I lost my best friend and soul mate, J.R., to a drunk driver in ’94. He was not only a beautiful man, but for the most part, made me who I am today. He gave me the confidence to peruse and pursue my dreams and to get out of the shadows of a shy insecure boy. Our love for dancing and Janet Jackson was amazing! He knew every move to every video she had, and trust me, for a white boy, he had the Beyoncé effect long before she was a Destiny’s Child!  Ha! Anyway, after he was tragically killed by a drunk driver going the wrong way on the 405 Frwy, I became a huge advocate of no drinking and driving! Through it all, my healing came with new music from Miss. Jackson and my inspiration for my first dance was “All 4 You” which was named “JRad” using his, Janet’s and my initials. So, I will forever think of that shining star watching over me every time I here that song. “Together Again” was my answer to that indeed, angels do exist… thank you, Janet!

{youtube}uSkb-_0Rt2k{/youtube}

Once I started choreographing dances, and people were responding with big smiles and congratulations, I knew it was something I would be doing for as long as I could. Since then, I’ve choreographed close to 50 dances, including “Bad Romance,” “When Love Takes Over,” “UptownSlide,” “Tic-Toc,” “Loosen Up My Buttons,” “Girl Crushin,’” Ex’s & Oh’s” w/Jonno Liberman, “Dance Like Yo Daddy,” “If My Baby Doesn’t Love Me,” “A Little Heartbreaker” and a huge So Cal fav, and one of my faves, “Everybody Have A Good Time,” which celebrates what this is all about! Good times! I’m currently working on a new routine for the Dance Group I founded, now celebrating our 16th season, the International Award-Winning “The LA Wranglers.”  I’m very proud and happy that we’ve been able to entertain our friends and families of the GLBTQ communities for all these years and continue to thrive. And now, with a nonprofit status, we hope to give back to our community as much as we can!  We perform at our local prides and gay rodeos as well as special events near and far. We also host an annual event I created called WWLA (Wrangler Weekend Los Angeles) July 27th-29th and now in its 7th year. We bring on guest instructors from around the country and teach all day workshops, and host big dance parties at night! This year we’re back at the lovely Garland Hotel located just blocks from our host bar, Oil Can Harry’s, where we will kick it all off with our famous Boots, Briefs & Bras Party!  We’ll be teaching everything from beginner to advanced couples 2-step, waltz, and west coast swing, and of course, line dances! This year we’re bringing in the talents of Joey Warren, a world-famous choreographer and sweetheart of a man who will challenge us with advanced line dance classes. Also, we’re bringing back a line dance king from San Francisco, Michael Metzger, who’s current hit line dance, “Play That Sax,” is burning up dance floors all across the country! Also returning hot off the world line dance competition trail, Jonno Liberman! With a few award-winning dances in his pocket now, a huge rising star in the line dance world! Jeremy Box will grace us with his style and beauty, teaching couples how to use their full potential in WCS and waltz! Our event is welcoming first time instructors Kerry Kick, from The Ranch in Anaheim for some sweet line dance classes. Sheila Schlicht all the way from the Bay Area will be teaching some sweet 2-step couples classes, and last but definitely not least, Troy Inman from San Diego, with lessons in sexy ‘shadow dancing.’ I will be debuting a brand-new line dance that weekend as well! More info at www.thelawranglers.com. We are also gearing up for the only So-Cal Gay Rodeo around, the Palm Springs Hot Rodeo from May 10th-13th! I’ll be the featured DJ all weekend starting with the Hot Pool Party on Thursday the 10th at the host hotel, Baymont Inn &Suites! Friday, we kick off the nightlife with a special live ‘Behind the Toolshed’ parking lot performance from the hottest new gay country star Brandon Stansell at Toolshed Bar, followed by me spinning the hottest country remixes and your fav 80s and 90s flashbacks. Saturday will be the famous Dancing Under The Stars party where I’ll be spinning classic country tunes and line dance favorites sponsored by Chill Bar and featuring a performance from The LA Wranglers! Get more info at www.psrodeo.org.  So, as you can see, I’ll be a very busy man over the next few months. My schedule at Oil Cans currently is every Tuesday. We like to call it ‘Line Dance Review Night.’  I’ll teach 2 dances and continue to do run-throughs of all the dances that are being taught that month. Great way to get new dances down solid! Then we have TGIF Fridays where the first 2 hours (8-10) is our classic country set! The best of days gone by, including a line dance set of dances we’ve loved for decades! Then, by 10, we switch gears and I mix in Contemporary Country hits and take our line dances up a notch! By 12:30 we kick it into line dance mania to close out the night. So, there’s a lil’ bit of something for everybody! Check out Oil Cans, or my own website, for an updated monthly calendar of all our lessons! I know I’ve mentioned this before, but I’d love to thank John, the current owner of Oil Cans once again for opening his heart to me and giving me a home to do what I absolutely love! Without him there wouldn’t be an OCH! And, Tommy! You’ve always…ALWAYS had my back! Thank you, both, and here’s to another 50 years!

Waide– Who are your current favorite artists and favorite songs? What are your favorite genres?

Rick- That’s a loaded question, as well, so many come to mind because I spin not only Country music, but I’ve been a dance club DJ for 35 years now and still working at 4 clubs at the moment. So, some of my current faves in Country are: Old Dominion, Thomas Rhett, Billy Currington, Brett Eldridge, Kelsea Ballerina, LANCO, Cole Swindle, Midland and Honey County. Some of my all-time favs are Lady Antebellum, Little Big Town, Shania, Garth, Keith Urban, Dierks Bentley, Tracy Byrd, Clint Black, Reba …oh hell, that list won’t ever end…I’ll stop now!  In Pop, Hip-Hop and club music, I’m really digging Dua Lipa and Halsey right now. Big fan of Sofi Tukker, and Jax Jones. I’m having fun with Cardi B, Bazzi is a new R&B singer that I’ve taken a liking to, and Jason Derulo can deliver hit after hit and I love them all!  Favorite songs at the moment: “Hands Up” by Merk & Kermont, “Sunday Finest” by Sir Roosevelt, “Heartbreaker” by Parolee,  “Tip Toe” by Jason Derulo, “I like It” by Cardi B, “Selfish” by Stephanie Quayle,  and “Break Up in the End” by Cole Swindell.

My DJ schedule is quite full these days, with Country Tuesday’s and Friday’s at Oil Can Harry’s, Thursdays it’s Funky House and Hip-Hop at Precinct In DTLA, Saturday’s are open to play private events, weddings, etc., except for the 3rd Saturday of the month where I spin 80s flashback videos at The Bullet in Burbank! Yes, I’m a VJ (video jock), as well, and Sundays I teach an advanced line dance class at Just Dance Studios in Studio City from 4-6pm… come take my class…you’ll have a blast! Then, I jet over to Flaming Saddles in West Hollywood to DJ from 7pm-12:30am.

Waide– Long Beach Pride. What will you be doing?

Rick– I am the Director of the Country Stage this year. So, basically, I’ll be managing, producing and running the Country Stage all weekend… and DJing a few shifts, as well, along with DJ Jonno! We’ll be bringing in the talents of 3 amazing dance troops, Phoenix Heatwave, all the way from Arizona. Kickers’ Cloggers from San Diego, and of course, The LA Wranglers, and 2 fabulous singers! Our very own Tommy the UK Cowboy, and our Headliner is Brandon Stansell, coming off the heels of his brand-new record “Slow Down,” featuring “Spare Change,” a 2-step club favorite. His title track debut single also features Grammy Nominee Ty Herndon. This year we want to be sure people get what they came for! Dancing! So, our entertainment will be limited this year to no more than 20-minute sets! We’ll also be bringing back our Mechanical Bull! Ole, Fu Man Chu was a huge hit last year! So, he’s back! So, who’s coming to Long Beach Pride?

Waide– What’s your favorite movie?

Rick- I fell in love with “Love, Simon.” It’s a quirky great gay love story with some great comedy relief to make you want to see it again and again. Well, at least I do… my fav all time is “Powder” from the 90s, even though I’m a HUGE Disney/Pixar fanatic! No movie has ever moved me like “Powder” did.

Waide– What’s your favorite book?

Rick- “The Next” by Rafe Haze… it’s a very cleverly woven murder mystery with a gay erotic theme that had me glued to every spectacular page! Check it out!

Waide– What’s your favorite color?

Rick- Forest Green! That color makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Waide– What do you see as the current ‘trend’ in DJing/music?

Rick- Well, to be honest, it’s not trending like I had hoped it would… both Contemporary Country (bro country) and Hip-Hop seems to be getting slower and darker all the time, more so than any other musical defining times in history. There’s an occasional party song that’s faster than 80 bpms (beats per minute), but the majority is painfully low energy, and remixes aren’t what they used to be! Although, Barry Harris and The Perry Twins are remixing the hell out of current pop songs and finally putting the ‘bump’ back in the club! As for DJing trends, technology is insanely impressive! Although the true art form of old school vinyl DJing is long gone… there’s an exciting curve of mixing tools, controllers and apps that are bringing the art of DJing to levels I thought I’d never see in my lifetime. So, if I had the money, I’d invest in all that is new and current in the world of DJing! Cause it will leave me behind, sooner than later, if I don’t follow the wave of the DJ future!

Waide– OK, Mr. Dominguez… this has been a fantastic sitting. I appreciate you being so candid and calling out so many Artists for the good reasons! Now, how does the public find you?

Rick– Feel free to follow me on FB and Instagram. Please check out my website while you’re at it… Thanks, Waide, this has been a blast! Kiss, kiss, hug, hug!

*On a special note to all NoHo Arts readers… Remember, DJs are just like restaurant servers, hair stylists, massage therapists, and so on. They provide a service that will typically make you Happy! If you make a request with a DJ, please remember, tipping/gratuity, is ALWAYS APPRECIATED! Please, don’t forget them!

Final note from Rick:

*1984 was not only the best year in pop music, according to Billboard and Rolling Stone magazines, but it was my first full year living my dream Los Angeles, and on my way to becoming a club DJ! With the mega hit makers Madonna, Wham!, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Cyndi Lauper, U2, Bon Jovi! all these mega stars had some of their biggest records of their careers in this banner year! It was the year where all genres were making huge gains! I was working at a record store and reading Billboard Magazine weekly, and a little-known fact about me, I was FASCINATED with the HOT 100! so much so, that I created my own TOP 30 charts, TOP 10 albums, and TOP 20 dance club singles charts for almost 10 years! (from 1977-1986) I still have some of these in my archives! So, watching my favorite songs climb the charts was such a thrill for me! I still to this day follow the charts and love music trivia!

The Collective Studio LA Presents “Key Change”

The Collective Studio LA Presents “Key Change” at the Secret Rose Theatre running through April 29th, 2018.

“Key Change” began its life at a small women’s theatre group, “Open Clasp” in Durham, UK.

The group worked with women in prison, helping them to develop their stories and produce a play to perform to male prisoners and perhaps a public show.  The play was such a success that it began touring the country, including a turn at The Edinburgh Festival where it won the prestigious Carol Tambor Award and received a three week run on Broadway.  Since then it’s become something of a phenomenon.

key change noho

The West Coast premiere of this incredible show is currently to be seen at the lovely Secret Rose theatre in Noho, produced by the brilliant people at  The Collective Studio LA.

Of course taking on a very English play, not Shakespeare, more Reservoir Dogs but with heart, is quite an undertaking.  They thankfully and very cleverly have created a US version, but without pandering to the language differences, for which, as a Brit, I am extremely grateful.  The characters are beautifully and touchingly recreated as American women, a little rough around the edges, tough yet playful, enduring and iconic sure, but also thoroughly recognizable as our sisters, our friends, our neighbors. I think for me that is one of the many things about this play that makes it so powerful, that we can see ourselves completely in these four quite distinct, achingly and vividly portrayed women.

The staging is electric, there is a rhythm and a choreography to it, like a dance or a highly complex fight.  The precision of this is perfect and takes nothing away from the stories that unfold.  Set in a prison the story jumps around in time between the beginning, a fight, their hilarious descriptions of life in prison, the women’s stories and the end, the same fight.

The women’s own “before” lives are gradually told too, while we witness their frustration at the predicaments and the injustices that befall them.

They are comically honest about their own bad choices and wrong turns, but the common links of drugs, abuse and neglect are clear to see.

In these days of #METOO and #TIMESUP let us not forget our sisters whose lives have often been more affected and more routinely ruined than any of us.  These strong yet wounded women, whose misfortunes and mistakes just never seem to let them be, need our understanding, our empathy and most of all our support.  This incredible work, performed exquisitely by these absolutely brilliant and inspiring actors is such a joy, which seems an odd thing to say perhaps given the subject matter, but it is joyful.  Joyful in the sense that these stories are told not to incur sympathy, but hope, not to bring us sadness but to make us laugh and connect and find our own stories within theirs.

This is a powerful and poetic glimpse into a world that many of us are fortunate enough to never see, but one that we must not ignore or forget.

When so many women are locked up because they were abused and beaten and fell victim to their forced circumstances, opportunities like “Key Change” offer us a moment to really “see” them and perhaps that will lead to change.

I highly recommend “Key Change” at the Secret Rose Theatre.  It’s a perilously short run…so don’t dawdle.  Brilliant direction by Samantha Lavin.

Buying tickets for gigs in L.A.

For a variety of reasons, I usually do not procure my own tickets to local concert events. And after a recent journey into the world of ticket procurement, I now know why I never do. I decided a few months ago to try buying tickets on my own and see what it involved.

This experience was an eye-opener for certain and made me question the ethics and motives of concert ticket purveyors and the bands themselves.

My first few attempts at purchasing tickets were somewhat easy in that I went online to get advance sales ticket to see Rod Stewart at the Hollywood Bowl in June. Ticketmaster said that the tickets would arrive in 7 to 10 business days. I paid more than I would have if I had gone to the Hollywood Bowl myself and gotten them. Once you purchase a ticket online there are fees to be paid in addition to the actual price of the ticket.

Eagerly, I awaited the arrival of my tickets for a few weeks and not a word from them so I had an online chat with a person. It turns out that the tickets were returned because of no apartment number. I’m not sure who dropped the ball on that one, but they could have at least sent me an e-mail or called me (as they do ask for your phone number) and let me know that the tickets had been returned for and the reason. I eventually did receive my ticket.

As I wrote in my prior column, The Yardbirds are slated to play at The Fonda Theater in Hollywood on June 7, 2018. Because of my experience with Ticketmaster, I physically went to the venue to purchase my ticket to see them. The price was $40, which is reasonable and I gladly paid it. The box office guy wasn’t there and I spotted an open door into the theatre and walked in yelling “Hello, anyone here?”

After a bit, a young man came out and introduced himself as Chad Peterson from Goldenvoice who manages the El Rey Theater. We had a lovely chat about The Yardbirds and my having seen them as they were morphing into Led Zeppelin at the Avalon on Catalina Island. Crazy times I remember, but not much else. Peterson was also very curious about Miyavi playing at the El Rey Theater and I told him what I knew. Great guitarist who slaps the guitar instead of strumming it, but not the greatest guitar player ever.

I figured that since I had Peterson there I would ask about photographing the acts and what was OK. Peterson said that cameras without detachable lenses were acceptable, and recording the act is not allowed unless there is a written permission slip supplied. Glad that I’de been talking to The Yardbirds’ drummer Jim McCarty on Facebook and he said yes in a post. Of course, I printed that conversation because I do plan on filming at least a part of it and putting it on my YouTube channel.

McCarty has a lot on his plate these days as he recently releases a new solo CD titled “Walking in The Wildland” and he also released a new book titled “Nobody Told Me,” which is about his days with The Yardbirds and other stories.

The next tickets up were the Arctic Monkeys gig at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery which is slated for May 5, 2018. This is where it gets interesting and I began to question my fandom of this incredible band. This event’s tickets were only going to be purchased online from Ticketfly for $59.50 for a general admission ticket. I hovered about their link for the tickets and when it was time hit purchase tickets I did. I was informed that I was going to have to wait my turn in line before going to the link where I could buy tickets. A half hour later I was in, but the tickets were sold out. Just like that…SOLD OUT! I was livid and didn’t mind sharing my feelings on their fan sites as well as their Facebook page.

I contacted Jay Boileau, the event coordinator at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, and told him how I felt and he expressed his regrets and added that “There were 40,000 fans trying to buy 3,000 tickets.” As I began searching the internet to see what they were going for on the scalper market my blood pressure went up and steam began blowing out of my ears. The tickets had gone up to the hundreds of dollars from $59.50 in a matter of minutes. I called Boileau back and asked him about their policy on scalped tickets which is: your name on the ticket must match your ID. Boileau was adamant about the policy being implemented. “If the info does not match up then you will not be admitted” was Boileau’s answer. He asked me if I had the names of verified purchasers of scalped tickets on StubHub. “No, I did not all I can do is send the link to the prices at StubHub” was my answer.

As recently as April 18, 2018, the tickets at scalping venues were still available, but the prices had gone up. At Viagogo, the tickets were selling from $1,213 to $2,239 and at StubHub, they were listed for $850. In my conversations with Boileau, he had told me that Hollywood Forever Cemetery had written to StubHub and had asked them to stop selling their tickets, but never heard back from them.

There are two things that bother me about this situation: 1. For those that do buy the scalped tickets, it is going to be a waste of money as they will be turned away from the concert and they will be out the money that they paid to see the Arctic Monkeys. 2. Why didn’t the Arctic Monkeys book a second or third show at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery or at another venue? They added shows for other concerts, but not in Los Angeles, CA.

Next up was purchasing tickets for an up and coming very young band called Greta Van Fleet. This band has picked up quite a momentum on Facebook and their music isn’t just being listened to by the younger generation, they are getting lots of play and video posting by Baby Boomers that are also into Led Zeppelin. Neither band likes the comparison and Greta Van Fleet has made it clear that they want to be known for themselves and their music and not compared to other acts that have come before them. Suffice it to say that this fledgeling band is in the same music genre as Led Zeppelin and are definitely worth a look-see and hear. You can be the judge as to whom inspired this talented group of musicians.

I tried to purchase tickets to see Greta Van Fleet through the link at the Ford Theater’s webpage and it took me to the axs.com site that posted all the tickets are SOLD OUT. The band had started out with one date, but had added a second. The second show was cancelled due to illness and rescheduled to June 24, 2018. This news gave me an ah-ha moment and I said to myself, I think that I’ll go onto the internet and see what’s now available. I found one for $109.36 so I purchased it. By the time StubHub added their fee of $25.42 it was $134.78. AXS had the original starting GA ticket price at $39.50.

Is Greta Van Fleet worth the money? I don’t know what they sound like live so I’ll have to tell you about it in a review. These kids have been performing around the world and I think that they just might have paid their dues. For those of you that do not know about The Ford Theater, it used to be The Pilgrimage Theater where I used to go to see ballet performances. It’s across the freeway from the Hollywood Bowl.

Lastly, I had a friend get me a $15.00 ticket to see FYKE at 1720 which is a Warehouse District music venue.

It gave me the willies to be in this neighborhood as there were homeless encampments everywhere. It is one of those general admission places where you stand for the show.

FYKE is a bit Linkin Park-ish and frontman Enik Lin describes their music as “Alternative Rock.”

Lin stressed that FYKE wants to transcend negative messages and strive for a more positive message with good vibes. The band’s goal to help heal with their positive messages. FYKE put on a great show and I found myself dancing around in my little space near the stage. FYKE is signed to Universal Music Group International and were debuting their single “Nightmares” and is the tune they opened up their show with. “Insecure,” “Vices,” “Favorite,” “Awake,” “Sleepers” and “Closer” were also on the set list. Thank you Steven Delman, guitar, for giving the set list to me. I ultimately gifted the set list to a young woman by the name of Yasmin Awale who came all the way from Minneapolis, Minnesota to see this great band perform. Awale was able to get all of FYKE’s autographs on the set list and she is in a photo with Enik Lin of FYKE. FYKE is set to play a gig on June 16, 2018 at KTOWN Night Market. Located at 701 S. Catalina Street, the Night Market runs 4 pm to 11 pm.

As someone that has booked a nightclub in the past, the opening act is usually an iffy proposition, but DOSE blew that to smithereens with a standout performance that knocked me out. The band was celebrating the return of a former band member.

The headlining act was ASSUMING WE SURVIVE which really remind me of a tank of music in that their music ran me down and kept me moving during their whole set. It was band member Joe Lawson’s last night as he feels that he wants to be more present as a parent to his 2 children and a 3rd on the way. Lawson is indefinitely absent from the band and has been replaced in time for their summer Warped Tour ’18. Guitarist Johnny Silva was very friendly and talked to me a bit about their tour and Lawson. Polished, slick, friendly and with a great fan base, ASSUMING WE SURVIVE is a band to keep an eye on.

Searching for Player X – what is true in the Molly’s Game movie

Searching for Player X – what is true in the Molly’s Game movie

As far as poker themed movies go, Molly’s Game does not cover the subject from a technical point of view but has been eagerly anticipated by fans nonetheless. The true story of Molly Bloom, involving the presence of famous celebrities, is nothing if not exciting. Uncovering the mysteries is what Hollywood loves the most.

The movie sure attracted a lot of attention from all around. That includes the most prominent industry media, although it was not technically about the game. According to PokerNews, Sorkin’s film does not disappoint, even if the poker part plays rather a background role. They are not alone when it comes to the appraisal – the movie generated mostly positive reviews, with audience appreciating the story and interesting characters. It tells about Molly Bloom, former professional skier, who became hosting high stakes poker games in Los Angeles for rich and famous clientele.

However, the most exciting part of the plot, especially for local Hollywood community, seems to be about events concerning famous actor involved in cash games held by Bloom. The identity of so-called Player X, portrayed on the screen by Michael Cera, lights up fans’ imagination. There are few ideas about who could that be in real life, based on known celebrity involvement in high stakes poker: Ben Affleck, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tobey Maguire. They all participated in her games. That last name comes up a lot also in Bloom’s memoirs, usually not in a positive way.

The famous Spiderman was supposed to be a dedicated player who was responsible for bringing certain wealthy clientele to the tables and even lent her his personal card shuffling machine to speed things up. Apart from that, big money wagers seemed to have gotten to his head. Allegedly, he once asked Bloom to bark like a seal for 1000 bucks and stormed off when she refused. The real Molly accused him of stealing the games from her when he began to feel upset about the money she was getting from the tips. It seemed however, it was another player who did the stealing, much to Maguire’s delight.

It looks consistent with what the director, Aaron Sorkin, said about Player X actually not being one specific guy, but more like a collective personality, assuming the characteristics of a few individuals. Nevertheless, many believe the base for Player X character bears the most resemblance to Maguire. Some of the other things have, understandably, been dramatized for the big screen purposes as well. Like that frozen twig that resulted in career-ending fall which didn’t happen. Generally, however, the movie storyline was faithful to actual events.

Molly really was a good skier competing on an Olympic level, with her dad being hard on her the whole time, but resigned for personal reasons. She was then, working as a waitress in L.A. and an assistant to this unpleasant entrepreneur, who ultimately introduced her to a high-end poker game. Later on, she used her contacts to take over the games and start her own thing. Plus, she really did face the dangerous encounter with gun threatening mobster because of all this.

How to Not be Late for Everything

How to Not be Late for Everything

Maybe this is a familiar scene: you try to give yourself plenty of time to get somewhere at a certain point, but somehow you just always seem to end up in a panicked rush to get there at the last minute. Why are some people just so bad at timekeeping? More to the point: what can you do to break this habit? If the story of your life is messaging the person you’re on your way to meet to tell them you’re running 10 minutes behind schedule, then read on…

Aim to be Early

OK, this may sound very obvious, but one of the best ways to avoid being late for something is to get ready and plan as though your arrival time is earlier than it actually is. If you’re prone to overshooting your intended time of arrival when it comes to appointments, make a point of leaving way ahead of time so that even if you do encounter a setback or delay, you’ll still be on track to be punctual. If you’re the sort of person who tends to lose track of time altogether, try an app such as Interruptive, which will phone you at a pre-determined time to ensure you know exactly when you need to leave.

Set Realistic Estimates

If you have an idea in your head about how long it takes to travel to a place or complete a specific part of your morning routine, add on another half of that estimate again! Very often, people with bad punctuality find themselves running out of time because they have naïve estimates of how long it will take them to complete a task. Addressing this honestly will help you set targets that are more likely to be accomplished.

Wear a Watch

Maybe it’s a psychological trick, but having the “physical presence” of time right there on your wrist makes it pretty hard to ignore the warning signs that you’re running late! Rather than glancing at the clock on your phone or laptop screen every now and then, wearing a watch can be a great way to keep you in check. That being said, don’t buy into a false economy of a cheap, poorly-made watch, as that could end up making you even later! According to this helpful fact guide, watch retailers Chrono24 believe you can pick up a quality, brand-name watch such as Seiko for as little as $100, so you don’t even need a Rolex budget to enjoy a great quality timepiece.

Stop Multitasking (when you’re in a hurry!)

How many times have you been heading out the door and remembered you still had wet laundry in the machine or a garbage can to empty? Multitasking distracts you from whatever original goal you started – it’s a form of procrastination – so chances are that if you’re on schedule to be someplace and you abandon this to complete another objective, you’ll end up being late after all. Although it feels intuitive to tackle your errands so that it won’t weigh on your mind, it actually produces the opposite effect; if you do spend those minutes hastily doing chores before you leave the house, you will ultimately feel more stressed as you make up for it by rushing to your next appointment.

Ditch the Excuses

It’s often said that people who have poor timekeeping are psychologically ‘giving themselves permission’ to excuse their lack of punctuality. Lateness can be a major turnoff and being late for a first date can be a dating destroyer for some. It’s tempting to offer a host of justifications for our tardiness: “the traffic was crazy”; “I couldn’t find my house keys”; “I had to take an important call”; but if you want to break the habit of a lifetime, be honest with yourself and ditch the excuses.

Next time you find yourself in the situation of failing to be on time, admit responsibility and acknowledge the gravity of your shortcoming as well as the negative implication it has on others and their perception of you. Over time, you will gradually become more adverse to feeling this way, which will, in turn, give you a greater sense of urgency and importance when it comes to being on time.

Tell us a little bit of background on you and how it relates to “The Meatballs Of Comedy”

I am originally from Short Hills New Jersey, part of a big Italian family with lots of aunts and uncles and cousins. Ours was a musical family and I started my life on stage as the saxophone player in our family band, which was pretty much an Italian version of The Partridge Family, with the sequins and the jumpsuits and the whole bit. My dad managed and my mother made the costumes. Joe Pesci (who my father grew up with in Newark, New Jersey and with whom he performed in bands) wrote some of our songs. We came to California to make records (with a summer in Las Vegas to be trained by Tommy Devito, one of the original Jersey Boys, who my father knew growing up) and when that ran it’s course I found myself on the stand-up comedy stage. My younger brother, who was the bass player of the group, and I were the clowns of the group so we formed the comedy team Jimmy & Joey, America’s Funniest Italian Comedians and worked our way through the Los Angeles comedy scene until we became regulars at The World Famous Comedy Store. When I decided to do my own show, I created The Meatballs Of Comedy, featuring all Italian-American comedians serving up Comedy Italian Style, with Jimmy & Joey as the headliners.

How did the cast meet?

Eva Miller moved to Los Angeles area from Northern California twelve years ago and began working her way into the LA comedy scene. She began attending The Meatballs shows and liked what she saw. She started to help promote the shows and then started to host the shows and the rest is history. She was a chef in the United States Navy and it turns out a very natural comedianne and when I decided to have her perform as the chef it was magic time. Celebrity Chef Eva was born and is now about to take the comedy AND food world by storm.

I had known Amy Milano for many years as we were both working our way through the Los Angeles comedy scene. When I created The Meatballs Of Comedy I needed to cast a cocktail waitress who could deliver the goods on stage and Amy was the natural choice. Amy’s specialty is dance and she has traveled the world on the strength of her dancing skills (she introduced tap to Ghana, West Africa). When Amy is not performing with The Meatballs, she performs her one woman show in the theaters of Los Angeles.

Vince Brocato attended one of my very first shows many years ago and we never lost touch. As I was developing the show I booked Vince to come sing some Frank and Dino to warm up the crowd. Soon he became the opening act and when the gentleman who performed as the Maitre D’ passed away unexpectedly, Vince was the natural choice to replace him, in no small part because he had his own tux.

Danny Salay is the newest edition to the cast. He plays “Jimmy” in the Jimmy & Joey act and “Headwaiter Jimmy” in The Meatballs show. When my brother decided to go back to civilian life after many years on the comedy stage began the task of recasting the part, which turned out to be an epic journey. After many (many) “Jimmys”, Danny showed up, having returned from seven years acting in movies in China of all places (he speaks fluent Mandarin). We jelled right away and his talent, work ethic and Buffalo, New York upbringing made him the perfect partner in comedy.

Why should someone go to “The Meatballs Of Comedy” if they are or are not Italian?

Because Everybody Loves Italians and everybody is Italian at The Meatballs Of Comedy show.

The Meatballs Of Comedy show is a one of a kind theatrical experience combining music, dance and good old fashioned stand-up comedy. If you’ve ever wondered what it was really like to be at an Italian Sunday dinner when all the funny cousins come over, you gotta get to a Meatballs show.

Three Qualities That an Artist Needs to Succeed.

Three Qualities That an Artist Needs to Succeed.

I notice three qualities that successful artists have in common.  When they are all present in one’s consciousness, it draws attention, success, multiplies, and grows.

People want to be around them, work with them, and it draws like a magnet.  When just one is missing, it can cause wariness, insecurity, distrust, and failure.   They are equally important, and that is where most artists fail, as they don’t hold them as equal weight.

Actors work in collaborative arrangements, and that is even more a reason why you need to hold these values.  They are simple enough.  I am referring to talent, commitment, and your word.

Talent – This is easy enough, you need to have talent for what you want to do. It’s also the easiest to see,  it’s right there in front of people when you work.  So, for talent, it means doing the work to cultivate and grow. Actors do this with classes, coaching, working, being in environments where they not only show their talent but grow their talent.  All actors need a place where they can harvest their individual talent.  Work, classes, theatre companies, independent collaborative projects are places where actors work their talent.

Commitment – This takes more to see. Talent is one thing, but where is the commitment?  Standing in your commitment is a quality that people take notice of over time, and react to. This is one area where many actors are admired by their colleagues and other artists, that being the commitment they show and have towards their work.  It shows up in their auditions, energy, work ethic, classes, and in their networking activities. People who see committed people respect them and like to be around them.  I see this all the time in my classes and our theatrical projects.  When an actor, writer, or director is committed, others migrate to work with them, almost wanting some of it to “rub off” on them.

The last and most not taken seriously is “Your Word”.   There is a difference between your commitment and “your word”.  You are your words. It defines your character. I say in my classes, “How you do anything is how you do everything”.  People pay attention to your word, it is a reflection of your character. It also takes the longest to discover in someone, as you need to hear their word and then experience if they live up to it.

I have seen theatre company after theatre company fall apart over these simple concepts.

Talented people get together, they make a commitment and are committed, and then over time don’t keep their word.  Chaos, paranoia, distrust, and bitterness follow.  I understand that commitments change, as our lives change, of course, but your word is your character. It’s your integrity.  Many people don’t hold themselves to that.  I’ll see a talented, committed actor get hired, and by the end of their project, maybe hasn’t learned their lines, hasn’t kept their word on several production issues, and no one wants to work with them again. I’ve seen talented writers, committed obviously as I would read several of their wonderful scripts, then see them not keep their word with deadlines. They are talented, committed, but don’t keep their word.

I’ve seen acting classes fall apart because the teacher or students in class failed on either working on their talent, not committing to their work or partners, or not keeping their word.  This is a simple concept, but big.  It is particularly important for those in the entertainment industry because all of what each of us do, is intertwined and dependent on others.

Actors, writers, directors, set designers, wardrobe people, all have to be talented of course, committed, and keep their word.  All three.  Commitment and your word are the silent killers.  So many actors and writers I meet are talented and focus all their attention on their talent, which is good, but their word and commitment is not strong enough.

Check in with yourself, I’m sure you have talent and are committed to your work and craft.  Are you a person that keeps your word? Is that important to you? It defines your character.  Know the difference between being committed and keeping your word.

An artist needs to have all three.  That creates a strong, powerful person with integrity. One that people want to be around, and attracts other like-minded, successful people.

Till next time.

Group Rep Presents “Nine Winning One-Acts”

“Nine Winning One-Acts,” written by Laura Shamas, David Robinette, Rich Orloff, Josh Nason, John Franceschini, Kent R. Brown, Lawson Caldwell and  Uma Incrocci

“Nine Winning One-Acts” runs through May 20, Saturdays at 2 PM; Sundays at 7 PM Upstairs at the Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre.

The Group Rep presents its second annual One Acts event.  From 150 national submissions, the good people of  The Group Rep chose nine to produce and it’s very hard for me to choose a favorite, they are all so hilarious, poignant, clever, heart-rending and brilliantly performed.

From suicide to runaway bride, ghost stories to gay sons and accidental blind dates to wonderful weirdos and long-lost parents.

There’s really such a glorious variety here. Often theatres will put up selections of shorts that are good, but too similar.  I get home and can’t really differentiate from one play to the next.  But The Group Rep has very cleverly picked these wonderful pieces to compliment each other yes, but more importantly, to give us a brilliant cross-section of subjects, voices, tones and themes that really is sublime.

When a play opens with two people standing on a table with nooses around their necks and irony in their hearts you know it’s going to be a good night!

Every single actor is brilliant of course, I would expect nothing less from The Group Rep, but I have to say the material really is exceptionally good.

It’s a wonderful idea, to bring new work from new playwrights from all over the country to Los Angeles. I can only hope that some of these talents make it to LA to see their work on stage. I know there was one playwright in the audience when I was there, it must have been such a thrill!

I’m a big fan of short plays, like the perfect short story, brilliant 45, or cut to the bone haiku, a short play can give the playwright the license to encapsulate, the excuse to shrug off exposition and the freedom to tell the heart of the story and allow the actors to focus on the essentials and strip away any ambiguity.  The audience can really see the forest and the trees if given the opportunity that really good short plays allow…and these shorts and this theatre group does this all particularly well…bravo!

It’s not a long run, just over a month, so don’t dawdle. I highly recommend “Nine Winning Shorts” by The Group Rep.

Running from April 14 through May 20, Saturdays at 2PM; Sundays at 7PM

Waste Land

Collaborative Artists Ensemble presents “Waste Land,” running through May 6th at Studio/Stage, 520 N Western Ave, Los Angeles.

What a treat to spend the evening with some of the most iconic writers who have ever lived…even if many of them are now considered a little controversial.

“Waste Land” is a play based on the life of TS Elliot or, more particularly, his marriage to his first wife Vivian, which ended rather badly for her, dying alone in a mental asylum, while for him it produced his most celebrated poem, “The Waste Land.”

Elliot was notoriously stuffy, at least publicly, and his wife Vivian was the opposite, outgoing, fun and perhaps a little highly strung. But in the early 20th century the “hysterical” women were en vogue and Vivian was constantly at the mercy of one doctor or another.

Meg Wallace, JJ Smith, John Ogden, Bartholomeus De Meirsman
Meg Wallace, JJ Smith, John Ogden, Bartholomeus De Meirsman

Meanwhile, Elliot was busy traveling, writing and hanging out with Ezra Pound, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein and Bertrand Russell.  Enough to make anyone a bit doolally in my opinion.

This play really is like an audience with the very best of the modernist literary movement.  All of them slightly odd and terrible self-obsessed, but then brilliance almost always comes with a boatload of psychosis and paranoia.  Of course, Elliot’s best friend Ezra Pound went a little over the top in Italy with Mussolini and ended up in a US asylum himself…a cushy alternative to prison at least.  It’s a wonder anyone got anything done at all!

This production, so strewn with literary giants and their steely cleverness, really hinges on how well the actors possess their roles.  It lives and dies by it.

I found their interpretations quite riveting.  It would be easy enough to caricature them, to rely on obvious imitations and affectations.  But these sublime actors do far more than that.  They flesh them out with quirk and character, passion and life and it works brilliantly.

It’s beautifully written, of course, it would be astonishing if Don Nigro had been able to do anything less, given his love for this period of literary history.  But I do think he rather outdid himself with “Waste Land.”  He cunningly mirrors Elliot’s various themes from his poem, while also jumping around through time and place, just as the poem does.  It’s a fascinating and compelling way to pry our way into Elliot’s mind, while Vivian tries to do the same, with little success and growing frustrations and pain.  So we see him through her eyes really, a cold, remote man with little time for her needs. It’s very sad and utterly engrossing and I highly recommend it.

“Waste Land” runs from April 6th through May 6th.

3 Little-Known Reasons for Learning Music

3 Little-Known Reasons for Learning Music

Listening to music has the power to improve human life. It can help us sleep deeper, lower our stress, manage our depression, curb our anxiety, and make us happier. Listening to beautiful music can instantly put us in a good mood.

Imagine, then, what music can do for you or your child if you decide to attend a good music school. There are many excellent schools throughout the country. One school in Columbus, Ohio, Powell Academy of Music, is so successful that it has taught over 2,500 students since it opened its doors in 2006.

Acquiring an education in music can be taken at any time. Some people are made to take them when they are young, while others might decide to take up an instrument when they are older.

Why People Take Music Lessons

Parents who encourage their children to take music lessons do so because the benefits of learning music stretch far beyond the joy of learning music. A musical education has been shown to also improve language and reasoning skills, academic skills, test scores, and emotional development.

Those who take up an instrument when they are adults, do so for different reasons. They may decide to learn how to play a musical instrument because it relieves stress and teaches discipline–and, also, because it’s just plain fun.

Here are 3 other good reasons for taking up a musical education:

  1. A musical education gives you a deeper appreciation for music.

When you listen to music, it lifts you—but you seldom know how it works its magic. Learning how to play an instrument will not only teach you how to create something exquisite on demand, but it will also help you to appreciate how other musicians create beautiful music. You’ll develop an appreciation for the beat, meter, and tempo of rhythm; an appreciation for the crescendo, decrescendo, and forte of dynamics; an appreciation for the pitch, range,  and theme of melody; and an appreciation for the chord, progression, and key of melody. In fact, once you begin to get good,  you might, like many people who play an instrument well, begin talking about the color and texture of a musical composition.

  1. A musical education teaches you how to learn anything better and faster.

Learning anything well requires you to do two things: first, appreciate the fundamentals; and second, push yourself to learn complexity. When learning music, you’ll keep returning to fundamentals like timing and basic chords. You’ll also want to build upon this foundation by learning more complex skills. You can go far when you have a grounding in the fundamentals. Jimi Hendrix, for example, used simple rhythm guitar to inform his style, then layered complexity on top of this simplicity. His playing wove rhythm and lead. This appreciation for mastering foundational skills and then reaching for higher-level skills is intrinsic to learning anything.

Another thing a musical education will teach you is how to be well-rounded. Many self-taught musicians tend to stick to a single theme. They may identify themselves as a singer-songwriter or someone who only plays fast guitar. A formal education will force you to move beyond your comfort zone so you won’t be a narrow-minded, boring musician. Creativity arises from the wellspring of curiosity, and since you’ll be exposed to so many styles, instruments, and musical elements, you’ll learn how to cross-pollinate what you learn in one modality into another. By remaining curious about the music, you’ll learn how to develop strikingly original music.

  1. A musical education helps you develop a sense of humor.

You can learn music in an easy and fun way if you go about it the right way. But before you can touch on divine things, you need to be humble, accepting the highs and lows of your journey with humility. By not taking yourself too seriously, you’ll be able to take all your setbacks with a smile. A sense of humor will help you avoid letting a successful performance go to your head and it will teach you to appreciate any streaks of undeserved good luck. When you learn how to laugh at yourself, you’ll quit getting frustrated when things aren’t going your way.

A Quest for Mastery

We live in a time when hacks, or shortcuts, are gaining increasing popularity. There is something enticing about finding a shorter, quicker way to do something. While there is some merit to working smarter, not harder, this is not the path to excellence. The way to be excellent in anything is the difficult path of mastery. Mastering something is all about doing the deep work, learning the intricate details, and devoting the time necessary to make progressive improvements. When you learn how to play one or more musical instruments, you’ll develop a profound appreciation for the nuances involved in any quest for mastery.

Eat your antioxidants right – Prevent the occurrence of many diseases

Eat your antioxidants right – Prevent the occurrence of many diseases

There are many among us who have heard about the bait word ‘antioxidant’ and have bought beauty and health products which includes them without knowing how this mysterious thing benefits our body. Let’s clear it! Antioxidants are like bodyguards which safeguard the human body cells from getting damaged leading to different harmful diseases and premature ageing. Antioxidants reduce toxic radicals and molecules which play a pivotal role in the occurrence of cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s.

Unless you eat your antioxidants right which include the right level of lipoic acid, Vitamin C, Vitamin D and E, you won’t be able to take care of your body. Here are few foods that are rich in antioxidants.

#1: BLACKBERRIES

There are many antioxidants which are plant compounds like polyphenols and which you find in the dark purple berries. They are connected with a slower decline of motor skills and cognitive skills with aging. If you take blackberries, they also get power from Vitamin C, not to mention the value which one cup of fiber (7 grams) can give you when you take it regularly.

#2: DARK CHOCOLATE

If you’re a chocolate lover, there’s good news for you! If you wish to indulge in your chocolate love every now and then, there’s nothing wrong in it as chocolates are healthy. Cocoa and dark chocolates pack a punch of antioxidants and they are also rich in polyphenols and flavanols. As per a study by Harvard experts which was published by Journal Heart, it suggests that dark chocolate is good for your heart as it has got 70% cocoa.

#3: KIDNEY BEANS

All sorts of beans, pinto, black, red and kidney beans are high sources of antioxidants. If you wish to have protein which boosts muscles and has no fat and cholesterol, kidney beans are the best. When you can combine such kidney beans with grains, this will make it a complete source of protein. You can utilize them in sandwiches and in case you find it tough to digest, have enough fluids through the entire day.

#4: WALNUTS

Walnuts are not only a good source of fiber, protein and manganese, but they are also full of healthy unsaturated fats which are great for your health, like all other nuts. But when you compare walnuts to other types of nuts, walnuts are especially rich in alpha-linolenic acid, which is a kind of omega-3 fatty acid which is usually found in plants.

#5: RAISINS

If you’re looking forward to load your body on antioxidants, get yourself a handful of raisins. The dark raisins are full of anthocyanins which provide you a boost in energy. Sprinkle raisins on breakfast oats, blend them with salads and smoothies. Raisins contain 3 times the amount of antioxidants which you find in grapes and hence it is better to eat raisins.

Therefore, if you’re trying to take an anti-oxidant rich diet, you should take into account the above mentioned foods which are rich in antioxidants.

2018; Spring into a clutter-free space

It’s that time of year again where we start looking around at all we’ve collected.

Where did that come from?  Who brought that into the house?  We all go through this.  But what better time than spring to have a fresh start for the year.

Here are just a few tips to get started on the road to a clutter-free and or organized home.

  1. Create a plan of action.  Make a list of the places not on your regular cleaning schedule and create a checklist. Keep to one room at a time.  This will not only help with staying organized but will help keep you focused on the task at hand.
  2. Storage containers. Many discount retailers and big box stores carry all sorts of storage containers. From closet to drawer storage, you’re sure to find what you need to help the process. They are also available in many price points.
  3. Chose one area to concentrate on.  If you’re starting with your kitchen for instance, look at the pantry.  It’s one of the largest storage areas in that space.  Things have a habit of getting shoved to the back shelves and are forgotten.
  4. Separate items into categories.  Once you’ve started organizing, you may find items that are not needed any longer.  Create three piles; things needed on a daily basis, seasonal and give away.  When organizing my pantry and master closet, I found items no longer needed or seldom used.  Seasonal items went to the back of my closet along with putting things on a higher pantry shelf that I rarely used in the kitchen.  I also invested in a few metal baskets that just slide onto the shelf for smaller items I use daily.  It helps with time and organization.

I hope these simple and relatively inexpensive tips help when you’re ready to start your spring cleaning.

Enjoy!

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

“THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST” @ Brand Park in Glendale

Billed as “A Trivial Comedy for Serious People,” “THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST,” is arguably debonair Oscar Wilde’s most famous play.

Done here, outdoors on the lawn of Brand Park in Glendale, it’s a bare-bones production with very simple set and a narrator written in to fill in the blanks.  The production values are in the performances, which are uniformly excellent.  The plot is fairly simple.  Buddies Jack and Algernon both pretend to be named “Ernest” in order to woo the ladies in their lives, the fetching Gwendolen and the “excessively pretty” Cecily respectively, who love the name.  See, Jack has invented a London dwelling brother named Ernest in order to escape his country life, using the imaginary sibling as an excuse to visit the city.  Algernon pretends to be this Ernest to woo Cecily.  Jack comes to London to woo Cecily.  Lady Bracknell is a stalwart barrier, being Gwendolen’s guardian, to Jack’s plans, grilling him as to his worth in one of the funnier scenes.  Both men go so far as to make designs to be re-christened with the name of Ernest in hopes of winning love.  Nowhere is there any effort to explore honesty and true virtue until the very end, when truths come out and love abounds.  Set for this production in the 1920s, this EARNEST is long on satire and rapid witty dialogue, outing the English penchant for class snobbery and hypocrisy.

Director Lynne does a nice job of guiding this production, using Pascal Gercourt to narrate certain stage directions and even portraying a tea table aside from four roles his takes on!  Mieko Beyer is especially attractive as Gwendolen and Misters Melaney and Carbeck are spot on as the two wooers. Manette Antill is terrific as the stuffy Lady Bracknell, and Ms. Stoodley is bright as the spunky Cecily. Kelly McCall is properly stiff as Miss Prism.  This is a well-stitched ensemble!

The Otsego Opens in NoHo!

Let’s give a warm NoHo welcome to The Otsego, the newest homes in the arts district!

Why did you think it was important to create an apartment building with such a strong artistic focus?

Simply put, we focused on the people within our community. Located in the heart of the NoHo Arts District, it made it easy for us to decide on integrating The Otsego with our community. The Arts District is filled with artists, photographers, actors, and dancers just to name a few. It is important that we add to the existing beauty of the NoHo Arts District rather than simply insert another cookie cutter apartment building.

Why did you select the NoHo Arts District for this development?

The NoHo Arts District has really blossomed over the last few years. We selected the area because of its culture and uniqueness. The community has a very young demographic that continues to push the envelope of creativity. This, paired with the close proximity of trendy restaurants and exciting nightlife, created a perfect combination for a boutique style apartment building.

What makes The Otsego unique?

The Otsego is a boutique style apartment building that caters towards its community. It is home to exhibits from local artists that include different artwork and wall murals.

Instead of a typical community room, we have created a “Beat Lab” located in the lowest level of our building. The Beat Lab consists of a full stage with spot lighting for bands or musicians to rehearse and perform for friends and family. The room is fully soundproof and can be rented out for the day. We noticed how many musicians paid for a rehearsal space and figured we would provide our residents the same benefit at no additional costs. The Beat Lab also has a 12-foot retractable green screen that pulls down the wall, providing a space for cinematographers and photographers to hold photoshoots and create YouTube videos. If you just want a cool place to hang out where you can blast your music and enjoy some time with friends in the lounge-like atmosphere, we have that too. A 70” TV provides the perfect opportunity for you to rent out the room for Sunday Football and root for the LA Rams!

Our mirrored Fitness Studio and professional ballet bar provides an opportunity to practice dance routines or go into deep stretches. Given its size and smooth flooring, the studio also lends itself to be used for practicing yoga. In fact, The Otsego has partnered up with local yoga instructors that teach Yoga in our Fitness Studio weekly. We have state of the art fitness equipment that provide residents the ability to break a sweat whenever they’d like. With a fine selection of dumbbell weights, medicine balls, and cardio equipment, we have something for everyone looking to get in a core workout.

With a retractable canopy and mood lights, our Roof Deck offers residents the ability to bask in our fabulous So Cal weather during the day as well as into the evening. Looking for something to do on your lazy Sunday mornings after you go to your favorite café? Try sitting out on our roof deck and enjoying a nice book under the warm sun. If laying under the stars on a warm summer night around our fire pit with a cold beverage sounds nice, this is the spot for you.

All dogs need a place to play and express themselves. At The Otsego, your best friend will find a happy place for both of you. There is not only turf and decomposed gravel for your dog to explore, but also a custom dog wash station that allows you to easily wash your pets so you can always have a clean pet waiting for you when you get home. Don’t like washing your dog? We get discounts with a local vendor that will pick up your dirty dog from your front door and bring him/her back nice and clean. In addition to an ideal location in a pet friendly and walkable neighborhood, there is also the expansive North Hollywood Park just one block away.

Your apartments are very large in comparison to many local apt buildings. Isn’t this an unusual choice for developers?

On the ground floor of our building, each unit has a backyard that tenants can use to enjoy some fresh air. This isn’t too common in other apartment buildings and tends to differentiate us from the competition.

Tell us about your “Dog Friendly” policy?

We love pets and we think everyone deserves to have one. Our Dog Run is a space that residents can use to let their dog run free. In addition to our Dog Run, the Norh Hollywood park is steps away from the property.
