Sing, Bibi, Sing!

“Sing, Bibi, Sing!”

Producers John Lant and Tamra Pica with Write Act Repertory hit another home run with the West Coast premiere of Elise Arndt’s award-winning one-woman show “SING BIBI SING! The Untold Tales of Bibi Osterwald.”

“SING BIBI SING!” is running at Write Act Repertory’s home, the Brickhouse Theatre, in North Hollywood for only four more performances with the last performance on April 8. For musical theatre lovers, this is a show you MUST see. I really understand why this was a sold-out run in New York.

“SING, BIBI, SING!” chronicles the untold tales of Bibi Osterwald, veteran actress of stage and screen. Bibi’s career spanned more than 50 years, which is documented by screen projections showing photos of New York long ago…very nostalgic. Her long and fruitful career in New York includes the Broadway productions of “Sing Out, Sweet Land!,” “Three to Make Ready,” “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” “Look Homeward, Angel,” “Bus Stop,” “The Vamp,” “Family Affair,” “The Golden Apple” (Outer Critics Circle Award), and the first national tour of “42nd Street.” As standby for Hello Dolly for seven years, she stepped into the role over two hundred times for Ethel Merman, Betty Grable, Ginger Rogers, Phyllis Diller, Martha Raye, and Pearl Bailey.

The star of the show is Elise Arndt a NYC-based actress who has starred in The D* Word (from the creator of Menopause the Musical), and was featured in Footloose (Seven Angels), Briar Rose and the 13th Fairy (NYC premier), and Love, New York (music by Rob Rokicki). Elise co-hosts and is a special guest performer in La-Ti-Do, a premier cabaret series based in DC.

Elise cracks open Bibi’s songbook and weaves together their two stories to celebrate the triumphs and trials forging a career in the musical arts. You will here your favorite jazz standards and Broadway medleys.

I walked into the theatre hearing the overture to “42nd Street” and my feet never stopped dancing until the end of the show. Elise Arndt has a beautiful voice that reminds you of why you love Broadway musicals but also, her storytelling ability brought tears to my eyes on several occassions. “SING, BIBI, SING!” is a beautifully written show about family, passion for the arts and determination. Elise is truely endearing to watch…full of life.

The show was seamlessly directed by Christine O’Grady, (“HAIR,” “Legally Blonde” and Off Broadway “tick, tick…BOOM!…,” “The Glass Menagerie,” “The Boys in the Band”). The Dough Peck Trio brought musical magic to the show under the musical direction of Doug Peck. (Winner: six Joseph Jefferson Awards for his musical direction, two After Dark Awards, The Guy Adkins Award.

Special thanks to the producers, John Lant and Tamra Pica for adding another jewel in the Theatre Crown of NOHO.
