How To Buy Furniture For Your Bathroom

How To Buy Furniture For Your Bathroom

Furniture, at any place of your house, is an extremely essential part. It manifests one’s style, choice, and taste along with revealing what kind of a disposition one possesses.

Oftentimes, even after all kinds of variety and styles available in the market, finding furniture of your choice for certain places of your house could be a complicated task. And when it comes to choosing furniture for your bathroom, it becomes more difficult as it depends on the space of your bathroom, how many windows you’ve got, if you like mirrors or not, and so on.

Also, there is no doubt in it that choosing the furniture of your bathroom is a task we don’t do quite often so this is something we are not familiar with. However, shopping for furniture for your bathroom is more simpler and manageable than looking for any other kind of furniture.

We are glad you are doing your research on it. In this article, we have discussed the key points on how to buy furniture for your bathroom according to the correct style and right size. We hope this guide will help your process be much more efficient and simpler.

Buy Your Furniture With A Purpose

This first step to actually focus on while buying anything new is to buy your specific thing with a specific purpose. This way you will be able to not only enjoy looking for it but will also have a direction. You’ll also be able to save your time.

Buying the furniture of your bathroom means that you must make sure to see the fullest potential of everything you look at including its design, detail, usage, etc. Only then you will be able to make a good decision and a wise investment.

This brings us to another point: what type of furniture you are searching for and how do you want your bathroom to appear? There are people who like larger bathrooms and people who prefer smaller places. For your bathroom to appear larger you will need hanging furniture which includes vanity units and wall hung cabinets. Also, this way you will be able to manage and organize things properly in specific places and cabinets.

In the same way, if you have a smaller bathroom you can make it look larger by placing more than one mirror in it. This will also give it an elegant look as mirrors are a great source of decoration. Also, for storage purposes, you will have to install wall hung cabinets in it so that you can have more space and room on the bathroom floor.

Most people find it easier to select their bathroom furniture as it only requires a few things to fulfill their purpose. Moreover, there are huge varieties in the market available according to your tastes and preference that you will not have trouble finding.

It is also considered that bathroom furniture is specifically made for different needs. You can check out Victoria Plumbing for more ideas or for any specific things that you might need.

“They Crawl on Walls”

“They Crawl on Walls” by Waide Riddle.

The morning of Christmas Eve, Monday, December 24th 1945.
Chicago, Ill.

The war was over, but you wouldn’t have known it.

The city froze under a dark ice cap of gray swirling cloud. The sun had not shown itself for several days and the grey hues were slowly turning into an ugly blackish- blue. Snow fell from the painful looking sky, and with it, ghosts of soldiers past, young and old, blew the bitter flakes into a frenzy against people’s faces.

The Chicago Press

The printing presses were noisily at work at the newspaper. Everyone was working double time to possibly leave early and enjoy a festive evening with family and friends. The toxic odor of ink filled the air and a sign on the wall warned all:

ABSOLUTELY NO SMOKING

Down at the loading dock, the paperboys braved the cold. All of them dressed in the heaviest wool fabric. A flat cap (tam), fingerless gloves, an overcoat,

faded trousers, worn leather shoes tight over thick socks and ‘long johns’ underneath.

Leopold Nicholson was one of the company’s best paper boys. He was quick, thorough, ambitious and a true go-getter.

He cut the string that bound the bundle of papers with his pocket knife and tucked the rusted blade back into his coat pocket. He proceeded to count out loud a total of 24 papers. He folded each quickly and tightly. With a rubber band, he secured them, and tossed them individually into his paper sack.

His fingers were black with ink and his face smudged and dirt speckled.

Leo, as his friends called him, was sixteen and had been at the Chicago Press for over a year. He was their number one go- to guy. All the other paper boys looked up to him and admired him. He was their mentor.

On the street, all he had to do was ‘yell and sell.’

“Leo!” It was Tony, his boss. The sharp baritone voice startled him from behind. He turned hesitantly from rolling and counting his papers to see him with a young fellow standing next to him. The lad was about the same height and build as Leo; only slimmer.
Tony.

He was a sight to behold. A physical mess. He was full blood Italian and loved to eat… and eat… and eat; which made him horribly and grossly obese; which also contributed to the fact that he excreted a constant nauseating sour body odor that lingered long after he had left a room. He was also a chain cigar smoker… puff… puff… puff; a cloud of smoke always circled his head.

“Leo,” he said again, “got someone I want you to meet. This here is Samuel Coleman. Poor guy lost both his folks in a house fire not long ago. He come here to work. He’s gonna shadow you for awhile. I trust you’ll show him the ropes. OK, Leo? So, take good care of our buddy, Samuel.” He said this with a bold wink then put his hand on Samuel’s neck as a friendly gesture.

Leo cleared his throat, “Hey, Samuel, fine meeting you. Sounds like a plan. Sorry about your mom and dad.”

The two boys shook hands firmly.

Samuel didn’t smile but gave an appreciative look. “Thank you.”

“Good. You guys are friends now.” Tony smiled and puffed, then said, “Samuel, wait here for a minute while I have a few words with Leo.”

Samuel nodded as Tony escorted Leo over a few feet.

“What’s up, boss?” Leo asked.

Tony leaned in close to his face and as soon as he opened his mouth it was like the entire Chicago sewer system overflowed. The rank smell of old food, cigar, and who knows what, just about knocked him over.

And then there was the issue of the spittle. It sprayed.

It took everything Leo had not to suddenly heave.

“Yeah, yeah see, now don’t get me wrong, I ain’t got nothing against no body, you know that right? But, Samuel here is a Jew. So, it’s up to you, but, I’d watch your back. Can’t trust a Jew, you know. A Jew is a Jew. They’ll steal you blind in a heartbeat. Hear me? Be friendly, just don’t get too close. For your own good, you see. I’m looking out for you, Leo. Got it?”

Tony puffed at the cigar and smiled encouragingly… a cloud of smoke nearing obscuring his face.

Leo pretended to absorb the information. “Yeah, got it, thanks, boss. I’ll be careful.” He looked at Samuel kindly; who looked horribly lost just standing there.

“Then, hop to it!” Tony said as he patted Leo on the shoulder and went back into the building without acknowledging Samuel further.

Leo walked back over to the boy, “Let’s hit it. Go ahead and grab a couple of the bundles. We just need two. I’ll take the bag.”

Samuel said nothing. He grabbed the two bundles and shadowed him out.

Streets of Christmas.

The dock was cold, but the streets were colder. Icy chilled winds blasted them, and as they inhaled together, Old Man Winter sucked the air right from them.

Snow.

The sidewalks were hustle and bustle and that meant good money for the paperboys. In the near distance, the low toll of bells from a church…

A Christmas carol… but the music was more melancholy than merry.

They rushed across an avenue dodging traffic from both sides, nearly getting hit. Cars sliding on the ice… drivers honking… not in the mood for stupid stunts from kids.

Buck, the cashier, was already drawing a crowd at the nearby newsstand. He greeted Leo and Samuel with a simple wave.

The boys didn’t take long to set up. They cut the strings from the bundles, stacked the papers, and then counted their change.

Leo was the first to yell, “Extra, extra read all about it, Truman kills bill for state job control!”

Then Samuel, “Extra, extra read all about it, President Truman vetoes bill!”

And suddenly, the crowds began to swarm around them wanting to buy a paper.

This was the thrill of it! They yelled their headlines again.

Business men and ladies stopped mid-stride and handed change to the boys and grabbed a paper. Each customer tipping the boys a penny.

A group of carolers gathered and began to sing.

Diddy Johnson, Leo’s black skinned buddy, a street violinist, walked up with his music case in hand and tipped his top hat to the two boys, “Salutations, gentlemen.”

They smiled as he opened the case and handled the musical instrument as if it were gold. A beautiful violin and bow… he stood stoic next to the choir… and, perfectly on cue, played as they sang.

The masses stopped and listened. It was an extraordinary sound of beauty.

Bullies, hoods and street rats.

Applause and laughter erupted when the choir and Diddy finished.

“Happy Christmas, everyone!” And they all dispersed, leaving Leo and Samuel cold on the sidewalk, snow falling down on them.

By mid-afternoon, it had only gotten more bitter and blistering. Buck had already closed up the newsstand and left.

“So, how did you dodge being in a orphanage?” Leo asked.

“No one wants a sixteen year old boy. I’m too old. That’s all.” Samuel said flatly.

“Yeah, I was fourteen… one day my pa flat out didn’t come back home from work. Then my momma had to go to work after that and one day she never came home either. I didn’t know what to do except come here to the presses. Been here since. They take care of me. As crazy and confused as Tony is, he’s been good to me. He let me sleep on the floor of the printing press room till I could handle myself.”

Samuel didn’t respond.

“I guess we’re too old for parents, eh?”

“Yeah.”

The thought of not having a mother or father depressed them both.

“What do you wanna be when you grow up?” Samuel said wanting to change the subject.

Leo thought for a moment, “I don’t know… I don’t know if I have much of a chance for anything right now. My plans are here. Selling papers. What do you want to do?”

Samuel didn’t say anything. He was deep in thought. Perhaps he had asked Leo the wrong question because it suddenly dawned on him that he couldn’t see a future. He couldn’t see plans. This was as good as it was going to get.

Snowflakes gently peppered his face.

Leo looked at him and read his face. There was sudden despair between the two of them…

They were interrupted.

A man in an elegant charcoal gray Joseph A. Banks overcoat and fedora passed them. He took the last paper from Leo and gave him a penny tip.

“Good holiday’s to you, boys.”

“Thanks, mister.” Leo said, genuinely grateful.

The man hurried away.

“That’s it, we’re out of papers. We’re finished for the day.”

“Good.”

“Good is right. I am–“

“Hey, Jew Boy!” Someone shouted from across the street.

The intrusion was offensive. It angered Leo and frightened Samuel. Leo recognized the voice instantly.

“It’s Larry Stanford.”

“Who?”

“Larry Stanford. Street kid and his thieving buddies.”

Larry stood across the street with three other boys, Miles, Willard and Clive. All of them filthy from head to toe. They were the city’s street urchins who lived in the alleys and stole to survive. Forget about asking for change; they just took it.

“Hey, Jew Boy, you know your name, don’t you?” Larry taunted as his hoodlum friends broke out into laughter.

Samuel was quiet. He knew what Christian boys were capable of… he took a step back and closer to Leo.

“Hey, Leo, you turn into a Jew lover or what?” He yelled again, wanting trouble, and Leo was happy to give it to him. Miles, Willard and Clive laughed and hollered more insults at Samuel.

“Don’t worry. They ain’t gonna do nothin’… but, I will.” He looked down and spotted a marble size pebble on the slosh covered sidewalk. He picked it up… feeling it between his fingers… its weight… light… and… just right…

Before any of the boys could blink an eye, he aimed… and threw.

BULLSEYE!

It bounced hard against Larry’s forehead… breaking skin.

“Shit!” He yelped and grabbed at the pain. “Ya fuckin’ hit me!”

Miles and Clive held on to him as he fell off balance.

“Ya bleedin’, man! Ya bleedin’“ Miles said.

“He left ya bloody.” Clive added.

Willard handed him his dirty handkerchief and he pressed it against his forehead, “I’m coming to get you, Leo. Get ready.” Larry looked down at the bloody cloth; anger flared across his face.

All four boys headed across the street; in the lead was Larry.

Samuel was shivering from the cold and shaking from fear of being beaten by the approaching thugs.

Leo stood his ground. It wasn’t the first time he’d had a run-in with these guys.

Larry was in his face. Staring eye-to-eye. Inches away. He was breathing heavy… a trickle of blood was running down the side of his nose and over his lips.

“Ya hit me, man! Ya think it’s funny? I’m bleedin.“

Leo didn’t move or say a word.

“I said, do ya think it’s funny? I’m bleedin.“

Leo started to chuckle. “Well, yeah, I do.”

“What’cha gonna do to em, Larry?” Willard said.

Leo still didn’t budge.

Larry looked at Samuel briefly, then back again. “Well, I’m a Christian.”

“You’re a bitch.” Leo said flatly to his face.

Clive, Willard and Miles burst into laughter. They’d never heard of any guy be referred to as a ‘bitch’before.

They couldn’t stop laughing.

Even Samuel cracked a smile.

“Shut up!” Larry shouted and the goons clammed up. He turned his stare from Leo to Samuel. “Watch your back, Jew Boy. Your friend here, Leopold, ain’t always gonna be around to help you.” He stepped back and smirked. His street rat friends did the same; adding obscene finger gestures.

Their faces said it all, watch your backs.

And, then, they were gone.

The dark colors of Christmas.

Darkness had fallen on the city.

Samuel and Leo walked the sidewalk. Christmas was at its glory in the store front windows as the lights and decorations reflected off frosted bulbs and cascading tinsel. Every color shined brilliantly. Toy soldiers, bright red wagons and kites with long tails were magic to their eyes.

They stopped… and remembered their mothers and fathers, caught in an erstwhile moment, like a scene from a holiday postcard that had yellowed with time and never to be again.

“Where you gonna stay tonight?” Leo asked.

“I don’t know… I ain’t got a place to go from here. I guess I’ll manage. I always do.” Samuel wasn’t looking for pity. He was just telling the truth.

Leo thought… considered… scratched his head… looked around… then smiled.

“Hey, why don’t you stay at my place for the night? I’m not far from here… and it’s warm. Got plenty of room… and I don’t mind the company. What do you say?”

Samuel thought it over quickly. He was, after all, froze to the bone. ”That would be really great. You know, you can call me Sammy if you want?”

“OK, Sammy… let’s get otta here.

Chattering teeth.

The winter… this night, had eyes.

Eyes that spied on Leo and Sammy as they pushed against the wind and the weather elements. Snowflakes blasted their cold faces as they hung on to their caps; scarves wrapped around their ears and necks were no match from the pelting ice. They stopped in front of a darkened depressed apartment building. The sweet essence of Christmas was not visible at this lonely place; their noses offended by the repugnant odors of urine, feces and garbage.

”We’re here.” Leo said and dug his hand into his pocket and pulled out a pair of keys. “Sometimes the heating doesn’t always work in the building, but I got a good wood stove, so we should be just fine. I got a set up in the very back. Ground floor.”

Sammy nodded; his teeth were chattering. He just wanted to get inside and be warm.

Leo inserted one of the keys into a lock, it was a single door; old and weathered gray, and turned it.  The hinges had rusted severely and created a loud ghostly grinding sound as it  swiveled and opened by itself. The ghost echoing into the darkness before them as they stepped through and slammed the door shut.

Bolted doors thrown open.

It was dead quiet.

The building seemed to moan and sway with the rhythm of the wind and snow storm outside.

Neither one of the boys moved. Both were breathing hard. Leo could hear Sammy’s teeth chattering…

“C’ mon,” he said. “We need to get warm.”

They walked down a long hallway… it kept getting darker and darker and… “… the lights are out again, I guess… happens a lot to us…”

Sammy could barely make Leo out. They went through another door and suddenly they were in pitch black. Dead still. No sound… not even the wind.

“Here we go,” Leo said as he felt for a keyhole and door knob. “It’ll be dark, but I got lots of candles.”

Sammy was shivering and chattering uncontrollably.

The next thing he knew, he was being pulled further into strange darkness. He heard a door close and lock next to him… he leaned against the wall…

“Let me get a fire started.” He heard Leo say.

Shuffling. Movement. The strike of a match and Leo was suddenly there, across from him, illuminated in orange-yellow glow.

Within minutes, there was a small stove fire burning.

Sammy stood glued over it with his naked fingers and hands extended in the hopes of finding refuge in the heat. He watched Leo light candles… striking a match… carefully… putting the flame to the wick… a boy’s room slowly became visible.

A small kitchenette, a ceramic tub and wash basin, a toilet with a blind, a mirror, a small desk-table and chair, a standout closet and a pull down bed.

It was simple and practical.

“It’s perfect for me.” Leo spoke up. “ I like it… it’s home… I’m comfortable here… are you feeling warmer?”

“Yes, thank you… you call it home… that’s nice. Any time you can say the word ‘home’ is good.“

“Good for now…”

There was an uncomfortable silence between the two of them. Leo walked over to the stove next to Sammy to warm his hands. The heat came up in waves and rolled over his flesh. It felt mighty good.

“I got plenty of snacks for tomorrow. Milk, too.”

Sammy nodded in appreciation, his fingers and hands starting to feel normal again. His teeth weren’t chattering and his shivering had stopped.

Leo reached over and took one of his hands and held it. His touch was strong…

There was another gulf of silence between them. Neither moved. Then Sammy leaned over and kissed Leo on the lips…

Leo shoved Sammy back against the wall in shock. He was visibly angry. Outraged.

Like a firecracker, he went off.

“Why’d you do that?” He shouted.

Sammy had been slammed hard; the impact knocking the breath out of him.

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

Leo grabbed him by the shirt and pushed him up against the wall off of his feet. It was a vise grip.

“Why’d you do that to me? Answer me! Why?” So much anger and torment in his eyes.

“I… I thought you wanted me to.” Sammy’s heart was racing.

“Guys don’t kiss other guys! Never! Ever! Do you hear me?”

“I thought … I thought.”

“What!? Why’d ya think that? Why?”

“The way you looked at me and touched me…”

Leo reared his other arm up and made a fist.

Sammy shut his eyes tight and waited, his feet dangling.

…he waited.

…and waited.

He felt Leo’s grip loosen and fade away… his feet came resting to the floor… he heard Leo stumblingback and away… then collapsing… weeping… Weeping? Sammy cautiously opened his eyes.

He saw Leo crumpled at the small desk chair, his face buried in his hands, crying silently, his body shuddering with emotion… Leo looked up at him. His eyes were cloudy with tears. He didn’t even try to hold them back. He choked… rivulets of  pain… washed away… ran down his cheeks … dripping into darkness. “I don’t know how to explain it… seems no one does… no one will talk to me about it… I always had feelings… I always had them. As young as I can remember. As far back… feelings I wasn’t allowed to talk about… to share… I couldn’t explain to anyone. I went to church. Another church. Church after church looking for God and answers. Looking for someone to talk to. I even confessed. I confessed to priests. To ministers. To pastors… even a Rabbi. All of them… All of them suddenly hated me when I told them what I was feeling in my heart. They said it was forbidden. God forbid it. They said I was sick. I was unnatural. They said they loved me, but I was evil. They wouldn’t have anything to do with me… they wouldn’t even touch me because they said God would not want that. I prayed to God. I prayed hard. I begged God to take these feelings away from me… I told God I was sorry that I hurt him. But my feelings didn’t go away. They stayed. Then daddy was gone. Then mama was gone. Everyone was gone. But the feelings never left me… things that I feel so deeply… I don’t understand.”

His eyes glossed over again and tears fell as if they were unstoppable rivers.

Sammy knelt at Leo’s feet…

He leaned forward, as did Leo, and they pressed their cheeks together. He could feel the wetness of tears and very fine stubble… and all he wanted to do was comfort him.

What seemed like hours , after time, Leo softly spoke, almost inaudible, “I begged God to kill me. To take me. All I could think of was why? I asked God, why?  No one would tell me. I didn’t understand… no one would tell me…”

He kissed Sammy, and both of them wept in each other’s arms.

Something deep inside Leo awoke. The chaos and conflict interrupted. Something so innate, so personal and so intimate that it belonged to only him. Only he could claim it. Only he could own it.

This moment, this image from his ‘timeline of life’ spoke to his emotions and needs with absolute clarity.

This kiss, with another boy, like him, felt only natural. Perfect. Healing.

How could this be so unspeakable? So forbidden? So unnatural?

He disappeared further into the embrace. Absorbed it.

The door that had been bolted shut for so long had suddenly been thrown open.

They Crawl on Walls.

They were warm.

Laying in each other’s arms, covered with sheets and quilts on the pull-down bed,

Leo watched quietly as the flicker from the stove fire and the glow from the candles danced across the wall… dream-like shadows filled the room with orange… then yellow and gold… and back again … ominous movement… slow motion ghostly figures  with haunting rhythms… oceanic waves swayed from side to side and to and fro… from the ceiling to the floor.

 … shadows dancing… slowly crawling… on the walls…

He gave in to sleep… his lips purring quietly.

In time, the candles burned out one-by-one-by-one… the color of black slowly invading.

The last candle… sputtered out, leaving a stream of wax smoke behind.

The night and its darkness were dead.

It was now Christmas.

The Northern wind moaned and the ghosts that haunted the sad building began to stir and rise. They squeezed through the cracks of brick and stone and crept through hardwood floors. Lost souls walking amongst the sleeping living.

Outside, the winter raged.

Large puffy clouds hung low and touched the city with glittery ice. The Northern winds blew… gusts raced down vacant streets and whistled through broken street lamps.

Blocks away, in an alley between abandon and long forgotten buildings, Larry Stanford   stood horribly lost. He was confused. Disoriented.

Somehow he had found himself in an alleyway’s endless tributary. A stranger in a maze.

The other boys had left him hours before to go thieve.

They had not returned.

His fingers, face and ears were a deep shade of purple and black… frost bite had set in. He was beyond the pain for his body had given over to numbness. He couldn’t even feel his feet.

Larry heard what he thought was the whoosh of the great wind, but when he looked up he was mistaken and shaken to his core.

He swayed and fell to his knees and stared into the eyes of the Angel of Death. It had come to take him, and take him it did. He fell face first into the snow.

The war was over, but you wouldn’t have known it.

Sunglasses – The Ultimate Fashion Statement of this Day and Age

Nothing we use today combines functionality with style like sunglasses.

Watches can be a strong contender, but if you really want to create a statement with a watch, it better be worth six figures. Sunglasses, on the other hand, can make that possible at a fraction of the course, and they obviously serve a greater purpose than the watches, like seriously man, you can see time on your phone, but that slab of glass cannot shade your eyes from the UV rays in the sunlight. You can buy Police Sunglasses, Dior Sunglasses, or the newly launched Oakley Latch within $300, and they sure send a message of your taste and class.

If you are looking to get a starting point to get sunglasses or if you want to upgrade/change yours, here’s some free advice that you need to keep in mind while buying glasses for yourself.

What Are the Types of Sunglasses?

Sunglasses can be classified in two ways; according to their frame or according to their lenses. There are three main kinds of lenses used in sunglasses. These are available with all the major brands, like Police Sunglasses and Dior Sunglasses.

  • Tinted Lenses

Tinted lenses are the simplest and consequently the cheapest of sunglasses lenses. These lenses are made by infusing the glass with a colored dye. The color that is mostly black, green, or dark brown stops the majority of the light from reaching the eyes and consequently makes it comfortable to work and drive in bright sunlight, which can otherwise lead to headaches and eye problems.

  • Polaroid Lenses

If you turn things up a notch and decide to get a better version of sunglasses, you can get the ones with Polaroid lenses. These lenses shift the phase of the light passing through them, and therefore the resultant light has no glare that disturbs the eyes, and the scene remains still bright. These types of lenses are great for nighttime use, as they can reduce the glare of the headlamps of oncoming traffic without darkening the scene and make driving at night all the more comfortable.

  • Photosensitive lenses

It is the top tier of sunglasses lenses. These lenses are clear in the dark, but when light falls on them, it turns them dark, hence, decreasing the amount that can pass through them. These glasses can be used for day and night and cost the most of all types of sunglasses lenses.

On the basis of the frame, sunglasses can be divided into the following categories

  • Plastic Frames

Plastic frames usually cost the least but are very convenient. They are lightweight and are comfortable for use over extended periods of constant use. They put a lesser strain on your ears and nose, but they are not as sturdy and durable as the metallic ones.

  • Metallic Frames

Metallic sunglasses frames are strong and durable and generally relatively expensive, but they are uncomfortable for use over long periods of continuous use.

  • Light-Weight Metallic Frames

Lightweight metallic sunglasses frames are made of alloys of aluminum and titanium. They are lighter than the other ones and generally very strong, but all of that comes at a cost and that you have to pay upfront. In an ideal world, these frames are the best for any sunglasses; they have all the qualities you’ll ever need from your sunglasses.

The Top 2 Sunglasses Brands

After learning about some major types of sunglasses, now let’s get you acquainted with these leading manufacturers of sunglasses.

1)    Dior Sunglasses

Dior is a French Luxury goods company, and it would be enough to describe them by saying that they are a part of Louis Vuitton, the very gold standard of fashion. Dior has been active since 1946, and by then, they make some serious sunglasses that speak sheer luxury. You can enter this brand of sunglasses for a couple of hundred dollars, and there’s no upper limit. They can cost as much as you’d like them to. Dior Sunglasses are frankly more of a luxury than utility, but they’ll sure give you comfort and style when you wear them. If you are feeling reluctant to buy Dior, here are some of the things about this brand that will make you spend next month’s rent on a pair of sunglasses and live on the street for a month.

ü  Dior translates to sheer luxury. Think of the most luxurious thing you know and double that amount of luxury, and you get Dior.

ü  Dior uses the highest end lenses sourced from leading manufacturers like Zeiss and Corning, and the result is lenses that aren’t only lightweight but highly strong and resistant to scratches.

ü  They do not only look great but also are very comfortable and easy to wear all day long.

ü  They are made to last. Dior puts a lot of research not only into the design but also the functionality of the glasses. They are made of the finest available materials and use the latest tech for the hinges so that they can handle hundreds of thousands of openings and closings.

2)    Oakley Latch Sunglasses

Oakley is an auxiliary of Italian design Luxottica and is situated in California. They have been working since 1975 and make sports shades roused from the ones utilized by skateboarders. They start at simply under a hundred dollars. In the event that you need to get shades that are centered around usefulness and sturdiness and are unpretentious, calm, and respectable, Oakley Latch is the brand you need to purchase. Here are the things that make Oakley Latch the best shades for individuals who like to go out and experience.

ü  They are subtle; you won’t even feel you are wearing sunglasses if you have a nice pair of Oakley on.

ü  They are designed to protect your eyes not only from the sun but also from dust and dirt by sealing them from all sides. These glasses are the best for biking, skateboarding, hiking, and all sorts of outdoor activities.

ü  They are stylish but in a way that is more humble than extravagant.

The Bottom Line:

Sunglasses are both a fashion statement and a utility. If you want to go easy on your wallet, you can start with Police, if you want sheer luxury, you need to spend a grand or so on Dior, and if you want utilitarian glasses, Oakley Latch is your dealer.

Starting or Buying a Business

So, you’re thinking of going into business for yourself. You have several options available, and all involve some degree of risk. Do you want to create a start-up operation? Perhaps you are planning on buying an existing business. Or, you may be considering the purchase of a franchise operation.

Each option involves some element of risk and reward. Whichever option you choose, however, owning your own business offers a chance at more freedom and greater financial rewards.

Start-ups
If you are planning on building your business from the ground up, you are taking a bigger risk than if you were buying an existing business or a franchise. Existing businesses and franchises have some operating history that you can use to gauge the likelihood of the success of the business. By comparison, with a start-up business, you naturally think that you will succeed, but there are fewer guarantees.

Most successful start-ups don’t actually begin with a new, innovative product. Instead, they begin with a proven product or service (start-up owners often open competing businesses in areas in which they are familiar) and become innovative after the new venture has generated some level of profit and success.

Because your start-up has no previous track record (even if you have had success in your field), you will first need to raise enough financing to make a go of it. Banks or investors will want to see a plan of attack before they will approve a loan for your start-up. Therefore, your first step should be to create a strong business plan.

The business plan

A well-developed business plan serves several useful purposes. It helps to organize thoughts and ideas about how the business should be developed. It also creates a plan of attack that will help you stay focused. And, it will assist you in getting financing. There are several important elements to a well-prepared plan:

• Strong introduction: The cover page, executive summary (essentially an overview of the plan), and table of contents will be the first elements that potential financiers or investors will see. If these aren’t strong, potential financiers may not take you seriously enough to get to the heart of your plan.
• Business description: Whether you are using the business plan to get financing or create a focus of how your business should be run, you need to present a clear vision of what your business will be. The description should include how you want your business to be positioned in your industry, what will make your business unique, the products or services that you will provide, and how you plan on pricing within the industry. Do you want to be the low-cost provider, or the high-end specialist?
• Market positioning: If you want to attract investors to your business, you need to convince them that a need in the marketplace exists for what you are proposing. This section needs to include details on the size of the potential market for your business, how your business can benefit through sales inside the market, and how you plan on succeeding against your competitors.
• Financial objectives: This is perhaps the most important part of your business plan. Here, you need to convince your potential backers or lenders that your business will make a sound investment. You’ll want to show that you have evaluated the attendant risks and rewards of your proposed business. You’ll also need to project cash needs and expected income, and present a cash flow statement.
• Other areas: A good business plan will also cover in some detail your marketing plan, a discussion of how you plan on developing products to bring to market (if the business is a manufacturing concern), and so on.

Buying an existing business

The obvious advantage to buying an existing business is that it has a proven track record of success. But that doesn’t mean that there are no possible pitfalls that you should avoid.

Perhaps the greatest problem in buying an existing business is that you might not acquire the expertise and services of the existing owners, who have often accumulated goodwill with their customers or clients. However, when a business is bought, it is not unusual for the previous owners to stay on for a period of time to assist with the transition and to make introductions to clients in an attempt to transfer some of that goodwill.

Consult qualified professionals to properly evaluate the information that the owners of the existing business may provide you. Also, make sure that the reasons why the business is on the market are true. Is the owner really planning on retiring to Florida, or is he or she just trying to escape the crushing debt that the business has accumulated over the last few years?

Also, keep in mind that you may be taking on a heavy load of debt in acquiring the business. A business that is marginally profitable may not be able to both pay off the debt service on the loan and pay you a living wage.

Franchises

When you buy a franchise, you also buy marketing support, business strategy, name recognition, and assistance with site location (if it’s a retail operation), among other things

However, you also give up some things. You will never have the final say in all decisions, because franchisors typically retain rights to ensure that your business is run their way. Also, you won’t be entitled to all of the profits of your business, because franchisors typically take a percentage as part of their fees. Finally, you may be limited in your decision-making processes (e.g., some franchisors require you to buy materials from their suppliers).

If you are thinking of purchasing a franchise, it is very important to thoroughly investigate the company. Remember, you are doing more than just purchasing a name–the franchisor is going to be your business partner. Make sure that he or she doesn’t want only your money and then move on to the next potential buyer.

Franchisors are required to disclose lots of information to potential franchisees. Do your homework. Talk not only to successful franchisees but also to ones who have failed. If several former franchisees tell you that the company didn’t fulfill the promises of the franchise agreement, beware.

Make sure every representation is made to you in writing before you purchase. Take notes of everything said to you, and have the franchisor sign off on them. That way, you will have a record of what was represented to you if things go wrong.

Business start-up costs and organizational expenses

Generally, costs that you incur prior to the time that you actually begin operating a business are treated as capital expenditures, which are part of your basis in the business. However, certain start-up expenditures may be deducted, either in the first year of business or over time (amortized).

Such start-up costs must be incurred before the business begins operation and be ones that otherwise would be deductible as a normal business expense. Certain syndication costs of marketing or selling interests in a new business cannot be deducted, and must be capitalized.

You may elect to deduct your business start-up costs. If you make the election, you may deduct up to $5,000 of start-up costs in the taxable year in which you actively start the business. The $5,000 amount is reduced (but not below zero) to the extent that start-up costs for the business exceed $50,000. Thus, no first-year deduction is available if start-up costs exceed $55,000. The remainder of the start-up costs are amortized over a period of 180 months. If you do not elect to deduct your start-up costs, you must capitalize them.

You deduct amortized start-up costs in equal amounts over a period of 180 months. You take the total start-up costs, reduced by the amount you deduct in the year you start the business, and divide that amount by the 180 months in the amortization period. Page 3 of 5, see disclaimer on final page December 22, 2020 This figure is the amount deductible each month. If the business is terminated before the end of the 180-month amortization period, you may be able to deduct as a business loss any remaining start-up costs that have not been previously deducted.

For example, say you incur $52,000 of costs starting up your business before it begins operation and elect to deduct start-up costs. In the year your business actively starts, you can deduct $3,000 of start-up costs [$5,000 – ($52,000 – $50,000)]. You can also deduct the remaining $49,000 ratably over 180 months, or $272.22 a month for 180 months; your deduction for a year with 12 months of amortization would be $3,266.67.

Note: You are deemed to have elected to deduct eligible start-up expenses unless you affirmatively elect to capitalize the expenses on a timely filed federal income tax return.

Similarly, you may also elect to deduct up to $5,000 of organizational expenditures for a corporation or a partnership in the taxable year the entity begins business. The $5,000 amount is reduced to the extent that organizational expenditures exceed $50,000 (so no deduction is permitted if organizational expenditures equal or exceed $55,000). The remainder of the organizational expenditures are amortized over 180 months. If you do not elect to deduct your organizational expenditures, you must capitalize them.

For more information, see IRS Publications 535 and 583.

Tax breaks for small businesses

Other potential tax breaks include:

• Individuals are generally able to exclude 100% of any capital gain from the sale or exchange of qualified small business stock acquired at original issue, provided that certain requirements, including a five-year holding period, are met. The exclusion applies for purposes of the alternative minimum tax calculation as well as for the regular income tax calculation.
• Small businesses can write-off a portion of the cost of new equipment in the year it is purchased and put into use rather than depreciating the cost over time. This provides an immediate tax benefit. In 2020, the maximum amount that can be deducted is $1,040,000, with a phase-out that starts when purchases for the year exceed $2,590,000. Amounts are indexed for inflation each year.
• A business’s unused general business credit can be carried back to offset taxes paid the previous year and carried forward 20 years to offset future taxes.
• If you offer employees health coverage through the federal Small Business Health Options Program (or “SHOP”), have fewer than 25 employees, pay at least 50% of your full-time employees’ coverage, and have an average employee salary of less than $55,200 in 2020 (indexed for inflation each year), you may qualify for a tax credit worth up to 50% of your premium costs (35% for tax-exempt employers).
• If you are a self-employed individual, you may be able to deduct the amount you paid for health insurance for yourself, your spouse, your dependents, and children under age 27 (even if they were not dependents). However, the deduction isn’t available for any month in which you or any of those individuals are eligible to participate in a health plan subsidized by an employer.

9311 Destination Lighting – How to Get the Most out of a Small Bathroom Space

The bathroom. A place where most of us get ready for the day (or, indeed, the night). A place where we cleanse ourselves physically and, sometimes, emotionally. A place which sees the best and the worst sides of us. We all use this room on a daily basis; some of us prefer to be in and out as quickly as possible while others prefer to take the time to spend some moments in privacy after a long day. Whatever your persuasion, few of us would deny the importance of having a nice bathroom, clean, fragrant and warm. Yet, like many people, I can remember harder times, tiptoeing over the freezing tiles to a shower with questionable plumbing and the smell of mildew in the air. That is no way to live.

Unfortunately, many of us do not have the luxury of space in our homes and bathrooms are invariably made as small as possible to make space for our bedrooms and kitchens. While we dream of spreading out in a long, deep bath after hanging our clothes on an ornate rack, the reality is often a narrow shower jostling for space with a small sink, toilet and a laundry basket.

But that is not to say that you cannot make your bathroom a luxury space despite the confined conditions. Here are some ideas to help you make the most out of your bathroom, even if space is at a premium.

Lighting

Lighting is a crucial yet typically overlooked feature of any room and a bathroom is no different. Not only can the right lighting make the room (and more importantly yourself!) look good, but it can make the room seem bigger. We have all been in bathrooms with a clinical, white dome light which casts a ghostly hue over the room making even the most attractive person look like a murder victim. No one wants that, especially not in the place where you’ll spend the most time looking at yourself in the mirror every day. And if you need to spend a longer chunk of time in the bathroom getting ready, the harsh brightness might give you a headache.

You could do yourself the world of good by installing some nice overhead spotlights that will cast a gentler, more favourable shadow over the room and you within it. There are a range of soothing orange lights for bathroom vanity which you can substitute in for the surgical white dome or fluorescent tube. So, after a long workout at the gym, you can see yourself at a new angle!

It would also be a good idea to invest in a smaller, less dazzling light for those nighttime trips to the bathroom, so your retinas aren’t burning when you try to get back to sleep.

Mirrors

On a similar note, the choice of mirror you opt for as well, as the height and angle at which you position it, will have a dramatic effect on the room. Larger mirrors can catch the morning light and make smaller rooms seem larger, whilst smaller mirrors can be used for a more decorative effect. Mirrors can be bought in all shapes and sizes, including, courtesy of craft websites like Etsy, ones custom made to fit your specific requirements. Alternatively, you will likely find some hidden gems at your local antiques dealers or warehouse sales. Choose wisely and you will be able to check yourself out from a range of different angles in crystal clarity – if that doesn’t make you want to spend more time in the bathroom, I don’t know what will!

Ventilation

The eternal enemy of the small bathroom owner, particularly for those of us with inner city apartments, is black mold. When space is hard to come by, landlords tend to position bathrooms in the interior of the building where there is no window. This means the steam from your hot showers cannot escape and, without proper ventilation, creates dampness in the room, which can lead to mold if it is not dealt with. Unscrupulous landlords tend to simply paint or tile over the moldy areas which does not solve but prolongs the issue. However, in this situation it pays to be proactive, so to prevent mold in your bathroom, make sure it is fitted with a modern ventilation system to transport the dampness outside. It might be worth replacing that rickety old fan which whirs in the background with a newer one… or at the very least regularly clear any dust which builds up between the blades.

It is vital to consider these elements when you redecorate. Even the smallest, most cramped bathrooms can be turned into your little chunk of steamy paradise with the right design choices.

“The Legend of the Green Ghost” – A Christmas Horror Tale

“The Legend of the Green Ghost” by Waide Riddle.

The rose was dead red.

Green it bled.

It warned what was to come, the Green Ghost,

Run children run!

-From “The Book of Childhood Ghosts and Nightmares”

*

Star light star bright whoever finds the Green Ghost tonight

Yells Green Ghost!

-From “The Book of Childhood Ghosts and Nightmares”

*

Christmas is red and green.

Beware the stare of the ghost that’s green.

It haunts the cold midnight, each Christmas Eve night.

-From “The Book of Childhood Ghosts and Nightmares”

*

Listen as the Devil sings to the chimes of the Christmas bells.

Heaven holds its breath, as Hell opens the door to Christmas Eve.

You may not, but the children believe!

-From “The Book of Childhood Ghosts and Nightmares”

*

Christmas Eve, black and brown leaves

Coated and covered under cold blue and snow.

Under the blue moon, the Angel of Doom hovered,

Singing a Christmas tune.

So begins this tale… say the Spirits of Christmas.

They pray you believe…

In the year of our Lord, eighteen hundred and three,

In the cold freeze, that was December,

The ghosts remember…

Quiet… listen as they tell…

As the blankets of white blue fell,

As the night lit with blue light,

Along the coast of the northern Atlantic,

A little boy lost and frantic struggled on foot, with all his might.

Within night-light, the north wind sang, surrounding him,

Like the echoes of a choir long dead.

His head bent against biting snow and wind.

He cringed. Shivering and scared,

He wondered into the lair of the night’s unknown.

At east, the ocean was angry. Crashing in motion,

Slamming its waves.

At west, a wicked forest, capped with the glow of snow

And hidden dark caves.

The Angel of Doom cleared way a pathway

Up a rocky wooded ridge-way.

Even the Angels of Christmas stayed at bay.

The little boy struggled on his way up this pathway.

The Angel of Doom smiled…a drool of green mist dribbled from its lips.

A glittered green mist that glowed over blue snow.

A slow cascade of misty green, a macabre fog

That twisted and twirled and rolled with folds in the dead cold.

Coiling and snaking its way up the pathway.

The little boy hurried to follow, the whispers from the wicked forest,

Hollow.

“The legend, beware little children, beware, the Green Ghost is real.

Ready to steal your soul…listen little children, listen and be warned.”

The ghost of the dead Rose.

She watched in her death, dressed in black lace and black pearls.

The girl watched from the house on Blackraven Hill.

She watched from the top most window of the castle that is Blackraven Manor.

Black ribbons and a black bow in her black hair, against her skin, deathly pale white and fair.

Listen…

As she is part of this tale. Listen to her scream and wail. Within the Wicked Willows capped with ice, ice-sickles sharp as a knife, a dark angel, one of Hell’s black doves, flew and dove and circled its prey.

“Pray little boy, pray.” Say the Wicked Willows.

The ghoulish devil angel caught and clutched a dead branch with the sharpness of its claw. The little boy saw and stood terrified a moment in a horrified pause, because he saw the angels of God hung by their necks from the trees without leaves.

Limbs used as ropes and nooses.

“Now, do you believe little children that the Angels of God are dead?” Say the Wicked Willows.

Hell’s Cemetery for the heavenly dead. A gallows for God’s best to rest as peaceful Hell Light fell into the darkness. Their heavenly bodies frozen through, the devil angel up and flew, protecting its territory.

Here is where the story is told…the true story of the glory that is of Christmas.

The little boy shuddered in a freeze. He muttered and stuttered as he shivered and shook. He ran through the essence of green. Green crept and caressed his skin.

He left the hanging death behind him.

And suddenly the scent of chocolate filled his senses. For a moment it made him feel good as good as the smile of an old friend. He ran from the Wicked Willows. He ran through the pillows and billows of green mist. The whoosh and hiss of Christmas breeze as he passed. And as he made it into the clear… he could hear the faint sounds of the joys of Christmas…boys and girls laughing and singing coming from the top of the hill, the hill of Blackraven. A haven of warmth and safety, surely, the little boy thought. He ought to hurry. Ought to scurry up the hill.

From the snow glow of blue, the creepy wooden sign came into view…

“Welcome to Blackraven Manor”

He stammered back as he saw the manor. The laughing and singing ceased…

Sudden melancholy released. The house was dark and dilapidated.

Dark as the velvet in a coffin.

Dark…

As the nightmares in his dreams.

There was a flicker of light from within.

A sign of warmth and a friend, right?

The sight was welcome to him, and then the echoes of laughter and the songs of long ever after were there again…

He stood at the manor door, unaware of the horror and lore that was in store for him inside.

“Hide little one, hide.” Whispered the winds of Christmas.

And he pounded on the door with his fist as the cold Christmas wind hissed by his face, saying, “Waste no time while there is a chance to escape.” He swore he could taste the essence of sweet chocolate on his tongue. The Christmas wind lunged against him again. It kissed his face with bitter frostbite, then suddenly candlelight flickered on and off in the window. The Christmas wind froze itself in fear. The little boy stopped pounding on the door, he was cold to the core. His little hands purple and sore. He stared at the door, for behind it, he could hear something that made him shiver and quiver. His skin crawled as he listened to what sounded like an old man’s giggle.

A giggle of dark and untold secrets.

“I dare you to come in…” It seemed to say.

Then, the door began to open…

open so slowly…

coldly…

cryptically…

creaking….

grinding on ancient hinges…

Midnight without starlight. The stench of something dead and rotted seized him. Whatever ‘it’ was behind the door, took pleasure to tease him. Freeze him in primal fear. He could hear an elderly cackle… the odor of something putrid became stronger. A moment of nauseas claimed him and that’s when he saw the shadows move…

Claws!?

Talons!?

The Green Ghost? No? Maybe? Yes?

In the black glow… shadows shifted to and fro. A wrinkled chalk white hand… drifted… in and out of the darkness. Each fingertip adorned with a silver claw clasp.

The door opened a wee bit more… one finger… two finger… three finger… four…

The creaking became an eerie echoing roar. Just a little bit more and the door would…

The darkly cloaked figure stood there. Shy, just out of sight, away from any light. Tight against the door’s edge. And then ‘it’ appeared in a queer glow of green light.

The Green Ghost! Run for your life!

“Merry Christmas little one! Please… come inside for a little fun. No need to run.” It said.

It had long gray hair that touched the floor. The creep in its stare, dared!

Moles and rolls of wrinkles covered its face, which made the little boy’s heart jump and race. The thing’s skin was greenish white… all the more to make you squeamish at first sight.

Cold and hunger pushed the boy into the House of Hell, and before he could yell, he was already in and the door closed behind him.

Fear seared the little one.

It was sudden pitch black, as dark as cemetery earth. Death’s darkness caressed his skin. He stood frozen.

Not a sound.

Then, he heard the thing… it was inches away… breathing low… raw… like the grind of a tombstone. Pure evil drifted by him, leaving him numb, limb to limb to limb.

Then, there was sudden light.

Green fire light.

Bright green flame from the things forefinger claw ring.

Let no angel rejoice or sing.

“Merry Christmas little boy. Come to my children’s playroom for a little Christmas joy. I even have toys that are just right for a boy like you. Do you have a name child, just who are you?”

It grinned.

“My name is Roy.” Said the boy.

“My name is Gaggot Blackraven. Pleased to make your… acquaintance.”

There was pause and silence. Gaggot stared. Roy dared not move.

“Come… come…” Gaggot beckoned.

Through the maze of hallways, Gaggot led him deep into Blackraven, guiding him by the single green finger flame.

“I just love a good Christmas game, don’t you?” Gaggot said.

Roy remained quiet. He didn’t buy it. He knew something was wrong. He knew something lurked behind the green shadows. Up ahead, a green glow…

The room was part library and part playroom. Musty and dusty like an old cold tomb. Doom hung like a family portrait on the walls. Hundreds of books and hidden nooks surrounded Roy who stood in the middle of a multitude of old used toys…

rusty wheels rolling…

grinding…

by him…

a small black baby’s carriage with a ‘dead frozen thing’ in it…

Gaggot giggled. He was tickled.

“Oh, children are so special. Don’t you think, Roy? Whether alive or dead! Ha! This baby was sooo tasty!”

Roy ran!

“Run, but that’s just part of my fun! Don’t get lost, it’ll cost you! I eat little boys like you from finger to toe. Little girls, too! Now, it’s you!”

This horrified Roy, you see. He wasted no time. Faster than a riddle or rhyme screamed from a corpse’s lips, Roy ran on the tips of his toes.

Gaggot gurgled in delight. And, with a wobbled limp, took after the little boy, Roy!

The ghouls and grotesque hid in the shadows of this dark and haunted place. Every corner had its trap door. Every room bore torture. Every closet was stuffed with dead things. The attic was filled with the screams of dead children.

The basement-

“Dear God, please don’t let him find the basement!”

And, then, there was the dead baby room where Gaggot dismembered and cooked them.

Pouring molten dark chocolate over them, set them to chill and kill the hunger. What a great midnight snack!

Dogs and cats, kittens and puppies are yummy, too. Dipped in nuts and milk chocolate, too!

In darkness-

Roy vanished up a massive stair well. Up a creaking old spiral staircase. Up a rotted, what seemed forgotten, steep incline. As if he’d entered an intimate laboratory of sorts.

The scent of all-things chocolate!

He followed a long…

long…

long…

long…

cold

moist

cryptically dark hall way.

The only sound was the wind whistling through the cracks of wood, stone and-

A spectre howled and a banshee wailed a warning!

Roy continued deeper into the blackness of the hallway.

The smell went from chocolate

to rot

to death

to vile

in a matter of each step.

He wept and put his hand over his mouth to stop the scream that was waiting…

HE SAW IT!

A green ghostly thing. A green apparition. A phantasmagoria shifting in front of him.

Shifting…

Fluid-like…

A blur…

Green pulsating, kaleidoscope-like…

Then, the thing appeared. It was a child. A girl. Much of the age of Roy.

Roy understood…

The Legend of the Green Ghost wasn’t Gaggot, but, the girl.

She pointed a green finger at a door.

THE ROOM!

THE DEAD BABY ROOM!

YES!

Roy slowly gripped the latch on the door. It didn’t match the others. It was cold to the bone.

The stone in the old home moaned as Roy pushed at the door-

pushed…

pushed…

and slowly…

slowly…

It cracked and creaked and freaked on its hinges.

The stench of dead flesh wafted out. He wrenched as it crawled and clawed inside his nose and burrowed there.

He could swear he heard the faint crying and screaming of children in there.

THE DOOR!

OPENED!

The ghosts of hundreds of dead children greeted him in a symphony of shear madness of cries, muffled death breaths & guttural murderous agony.

THE DOOR!

OPENED FURTHER!

The ghost of the green ghost urged Roy forward and inside.

Somewhere downstairs, in the mazes of the house, in the web of rooms, Gaggot bellowed a war lords cry…

“I’M COMING TO GET YOU!”

Roy stepped inside and the door shut tight behind him making a thunderous thunder-like rumble. He tumbled and stumbled a bit.

The bite of a vultures beak!

He gagged and dry heaved. The smell was beyond Hell!

As his eyes embraced the darkness, the green of the ghosts melted like wax over the room. Luminescent and ominous, but not beautiful.

DEAD BABIES.

HUNG HIGH AND LOW FROM ROPE BY NECK AND TOE.

THE ROPE TIED TO RAFTERS AND NAILS AND RAILS. BABIES STAPLED TO THE WALLS, THEIR GHOSTLY CALLS OUT OF TUNE, LIKE THE HYMN OF AN ANCIENT RUIN. THE SLAUGHTER OF CHILDREN WAS GAGGOT’S DRUG.

Gaggot was getting closer.

drag…

limp…

drag…

limp…

DRAG…

LIMP…

The voice of the little girl, the green ghost wept.

“Please, help us. Free us. Save us.”

“But, how?”

SUDDENLY THE DOOR WAS POUNDED FROM THE OTHER SIDE.

GAGGOT POUNDED.

AND POUNDED.

AND THE ROOM SHOOK VIOLENTLY.

“I have a meat hook waiting for you, boy!” Gaggot roared and tore at the door.

Roy screamed.

“Remember me, my name is Rose.” The green ghost said, then she pushed him, sending him falling through a crawl-space in the floor.

A shaft of total darkness.

Splinters and nails tore at his skin and flesh.

sliding…

tumbling…

wet…

slimy…

Something creepy… and big… breathed a rank sewage odor in his face as he slid down the dark chute.

Tree roots came alive and slashed his face as he continued the tumble down into HELL!

Nightmarish pictures of children’s decomposing faces flashed before him.

The missing.

The vanished.

The abandoned.

But, it wasn’t Hell.

The landing was hard and rough and gravel-like… then

The light-white-blue-green of snow.

A pillow of softness.

Cold hit him.

He shivered and quivered as he slowly stood.

He was outside the castle of Blackraven Manor.

Rose had saved him from the ovens of Gaggot Blackraven.

Roy was bleeding.

He was numb.

He had to get help.

Roy had no idea of direction or location. No compass or circumference.

He was lost in a grayish-blue-green snowscape, with an evil castle.

How did he get here?

He had to get help.

The Angel of Death appeared before him.

It beckoned him to go with it.

IT SMILED.

Roy decided to take his chance, and as the Angel of Death did its graven dance, he ran into the blue-green night snow. The torrent of falling ice and snow didn’t show any signs of slowing.

He had to get help.

“Help us…” Rose had told him.

He had to find help.

“Save us…” The green ghost had whispered to him.

Roy wondered and became imbalanced. He was discombobulated. Frozen to the bone.

The Angel of Death was right behind him.

SO WERE THE OTHERS!

DEVILS.

DARK ANGELS.

DEAD MONSTERS OF THE NIGHT AND WILDERNESS.

The horizon was a cold

dark

green

blue

black

sore.

He collapsed into the ice, face first.

Soon, snow drifted over him.

Far and away, in the top most window of Blackraven Manor, the girl, Rose, the green ghost, turned away from view, shutting the curtain to.

The glow of green flickered out.

Deep in the bowels of Blackraven Manor, hidden in the castle catacombs, Gaggot laughed. A deep laugh in his gut, like a painful, gross, open wound… whispering…

“I’m not finished with you, yet.”

The Harmony of the Noosphere | 5 Car Garage

***

Contemporary art is often inaccessible to many. Potatoes on a table generating an electric charge, or even a pile of candy in the middle of the room are the stars of art exhibitions. Onlookers may even think “I can do that.” Upon first glance, The Harmony of the Noosphere doesn’t quite carry the weight of its narrative. However, Ian James’ brilliance shows through in the description of each art piece, and is dually elevated when you begin to visualize how long the craft of each piece actually takes.

Ian James’ “The Harmony of the Noosphere” is exhibiting at 5 Car Garage in Santa Monica, CA, via appointment only from December 12, 2020 – January 23, 2021. Using the Noosphere as the central point of focus, “The Harmony of the Noosphere” tackles the delicate dance between spiritualism and capitalism vis a vis marble laminate artifacts and photography.

What is the Noosphere? The Noosphere is the third sphere surrounding Earth, outside of the Lithosphere and Biosphere. The Noosphere is a telepathic sphere where all intelligence and consciousness gathers and evolves into a singular, understanding entity. Based on the extensive writings of Jose Arguellas, the Noosphere is highlighted as utopic in nature, and is impeded by capitalist spiritual inventions and commerce.

From photography of cult spiritual leader inventions manufactured by the group’s followers, to neck pillows purchased on Amazon intended to heal individuals within a certain spiritual plane, even religion and spirituality in the United States cannot escape Capitalistic momentum. The focal point of the exhibition is a marble laminate pyramid broadcasting new age healing music on a local radio channel. The full joy of James’ radio marble pyramid is in his sharing of the acquisition. James designed and imported this piece from Wuhan China at the 2020, just when the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns began in Los Angeles. With local stores depleted of toilet paper and PPE, the Wuhan, China manufacturing facility graciously substituted packing peanuts for rolls of toilet paper and masks!

Especially with the whiplash of 2020, “The Harmony of the Noosphere” is a dimension we all can daily elevate with, and contribute to, as we focus on human connectivity and elevate to a singular consciousness of understanding and kindness

Technological Advancement for Modern Businesses

Technological advancement for modern businesses

In a world that continues to become more digitally inclined all the time, it should come as little to no surprise that we are in turn becoming more invested and determined to propel for the advancement and enhancement of digital marvels like rapid digitalisation and technological implementation. Practically every aspect of our lives today has been impacted by our rising influence and love of these modern marvels and as a result we are living in a world that is becoming exceedingly digitally inclined. That much is certain. And in many ways, that is one of the only certainty is there is in this particular aspect of life as we know it.

In terms of the impact that digitalisation and technological implementation have on different aspects of our lives, there is a lot to be said about the fact that this is very much an ongoing work in progress and which we are going through many learning curves and finding the best way to navigate to root. Whether it is life at home or life in the workplace or anything in between we are really beginning to form a strong understanding and solid relationship with the rising digital era that is revolutionising every aspect of life as we know it.

The modernisation of the professional landscape

There has, of course, been quite a lot of innovation and modernisation in the professional landscape of today. In many ways, the modernisation of the professional landscape is intrinsically linked to our rising influence and appreciation of not only what the professional landscape makes possible but how it continues to function and thrive as we head further into the digital era. And more than ever before, modern businesses are fully embracing digitalisation and technological enhancement.

Technological advancement for modern businesses

For modern businesses, it is technological advancement that is truly making the most phenomenally positive impact of all. Technological advancement in the modern business area is all about in pairing businesses to shift towards more convenient and efficient ways to produce high quality initiatives and designs will also incorporate the most effective ways to take care of every aspect of the ever evolving businesses. Never before have we seen so much interest and investment in modern business and this is likely, if not certainly, going to be just the surface.

What this means for the future of business

There have of course been many emotions in technological incrementation in modern businesses, from the rise of the business phone service to the introduction of online expansions of business models. And what this means for the future of business is that while there is still quite a long way to go in terms of what is possible for the future of technological business ideals and operations, we have made tremendous leaps and bounds in that direction. And it is important to invest in the further advancement of those leaps and bounds so that we can continue to see business technologies take shape and empower businesses now and well into the future and beyond.

Is Milk a Purrfect Treat For A Cat?

Is Milk a Purrfect Treat for a Cat?

Felines are everywhere. Virtually speaking, they are always on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. I think It’s safe to say that everybody is crazy about them. With their captivating eyes, soft furs, adorable meows, and hilarious things they do, getting a cat as well as taking care of it is irresistible.

Considering that cats have been getting a lot of attention, we know things about them. Like, they can live up to 20 years or more depending on how you take care of them (read more). They are independent and know how to look after themselves, they love boxes, and they are nocturnal. But there are also things that we might not have known yet.

If you know these things, good for you. It means you have done your research well!

So, they can drink seawater, have sweat glands on their paws, their nose prints are as unique as human fingerprints, and shouldn’t drink milk. What is striking is the last detail. Milk is known as the conventional and nutritious treat for felines. Besides, cartoons and animated shows have been showing us that it is a cat’s fave drink!

Now, how come they shouldn’t drink one when in the first place, their first-ever food was their mother’s milk? And why can’t we give the same to our cats when they seem to love it?

Felines and Milk

Apparently, just like humans, pets love milk. The fats and protein, together with its aroma, make cats want it. However, they are lactose intolerant. Basically, lactose intolerance means you cannot digest any dairy-based products. Felines are lactose intolerant because most of them lack this lactase — an enzyme responsible for helping cats digest the lactose found in milk.

Milk as a nutritious treat for felines is a myth. According to this page, any type of the creamy beverage is nutritionally incomplete food for these four-legged prima donnas. It doesn’t deliver nutrients to their bodies. Although kittens have grown because of their mother’s milk, they should avoid drinking it right after their breastfeeding period.

Veterinarians think it can be given as an occasional treat, but it should not be a regular meal.

The Aftermath

A little bit of dairy action will not hurt our cats, but a tablespoon or two can already make them sick.

The following are some problems cats may experience from drinking high-lactose products:

  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling unwell and weak
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Increase in destructive behavior like scratching
  • Gastrointestinal complications

If your cats appear to be sick after drinking milk, for instance, vomiting and having diarrhea – don’t provide them food right away. According to https://www.holistapet.com/can-cats-drink-milk/, clean water will suffice. If they refused to drink water, they would not easily be dehydrated. Whenever you give them wet food, they can already get water from it.

But the best way to remedy your cat’s sickness is to consult your vet or seek professional help. Remember, cats can’t regulate their diet. It is in our control to keep them as healthy as possible.

Cats Allergic to Milk

How would you know if your cat suffers from an allergic reaction? These are some signs that your cat is experiencing some discomfort:

  • Experiences digestive problems
  • Has watery eyes
  • Losses hair
  • Has dry skins
  • Displays itchiness

Some Alternatives

If your pets really want it above all else, you may give them lactose-free milk. They can easily digest it compared to regular milk. More so, water is an integral part of their diet. Water maintains their body healthy and enables them to survive.

Keeping Feline Friends Healthy

A healthy cat usually has bright eyes and a shiny fur coat. Seeing our cats sick is heartbreaking. Here are some ways to keep our cats healthy.

  • Give them clean water
  • Avoid toxic food (chocolate, garlic, caffeine, dairy products)
  • Keep their mouths clean
  • Brush or comb their fur daily
  • Allow them to scratch
  • Have a cat-friendly vet
  • Have them spayed or neutered

Final Thoughts

Cats are indeed great companions. They can make us happy in their own adorable ways. They can also provide us comfort and relief from stress and anxiety. Just like a parent to a child, we need to give what is best for them.

Pros and Cons of Using SoundCloud to Start Your Music Career

Pros and Cons of Using SoundCloud to Start Your Music Career

For most artists in the industry, SoundCloud’s music streaming and distribution website is a popular first choice for an online presence. And why not? Since its launch in 2012, SoundCloud has enabled many veterans and new artists to solidify their careers. Moreover, the platform has continuously adapted itself to meet the needs of an ever-changing music community.

How User-Friendly Is SoundCloud? Can It Be Relied Upon for An Income Option?

SoundCloud is relatively easy to join and use. It offers various types of accounts that can enable an account-holder to earn an income. This is in addition to building up a fan base and an online presence. SoundCloud relies primarily on a real-time play count on the uploaded music files for the purpose. Use this link to know more about how to accumulate SoundCloud plays quickly and affordably.

What Are the Pros of Using SoundCloud to Start a Music Career?

  • It is user-friendly:SoundCloud is easy to operate. It features excellent navigation choices, and it allows for easy cross-platform sharing of embedded links to files. For a new artist looking for an effective way of gaining a bigger audience and for the possibility of earning from their work with minimum investment on the social platform, this website is indeed full of plus-points.
  • It supports both audio and video file uploads:For any artist in the music industry, this is a significant advantage. Most other music sharing platforms are primarily visual platforms. While it may be possible to upload a video for an individual music file, it is often not financially feasible to make and upload quality music videos for each file an artist creates. For a new music artist, the flexibility to upload podcasts, audio, and mixed-format files using the same set of tools is a boon.
  • It is easy to access across devices:Files uploaded to SoundCloud can be accessed through laptops, desktops, and mobile devices over with equal ease. SoundCloud is accessible through both Android and iOS apps and is compatible with several browsers. This enables listeners to play an artist’s music anywhere, anytime. New Artists need not fear losing out on potential regular listeners over their choice of a music-sharing platform with SoundCloud.

Pros and Cons of Using SoundCloud to Start Your Music Career

  • It is a website with global outreach:For any artist seeking to build a large fan base for their music, SoundCloud has the advantage of being internationally famous. Music Labels across the globe are continually scouting the platform for new talent. Suppose one has quality content and can gather enough SoundCloud plays to make their music trend. In that case, they are more likely to be discovered by talent scouts, producers, bloggers, and DJs on SoundCloud than on most other music streaming platforms.
  • It allows the artist to earn from their content:As long as one’s content can generate and sustain several organic SoundCloud plays, artists can make money and popularity from their uploaded files.
  • It creates new listening opportunities by generating suggested playlists:As long as an artist tags their work with correct labels, they have a high chance of featuring in a playlist generated by SoundCloud for its listeners. Auto-generated playlists like “Play Related Tracks”, “Top 50” or “New Hot” offer a mix of both seasoned and new artists to the music community and thus bring a new musician more publicity opportunities.
  • It integrates several social networking features: SoundCloud provides better social networking opportunities compared to most other platforms. This can work to a newcomer’s advantage as the artist has to build a fan base both online and offline from a count of zero. Some of these features are:
  • Listeners can like, share, and repost files. Listeners can also bookmark favorites and download select tracks of an artist. This brings an organic promotion to a contributor’s soundtracks.
  • Artists, as well as their listeners, can cross-post embedded links to SoundCloud files on other social networks like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. This enables an artist to reach out to a more engaged audience.
  • An artist can create groups or join and follow other groups based on genre, theme, and several other criteria. This enables artists to interact with listeners and other artists. They can find potent collaborators, learn from other artists, and build contacts in the industry besides growing their fan base.
  • Artists and listeners can directly communicate with each other through likes, shares, and comments on the Waveform of an uploaded track.
  • It allows young professionals to collaborate, edit, and modify their music:SoundCloud offers artists features to share snippets and draft versions of their files to generate reviews privately. This helps them gather feedback and improve their soundtracks accordingly. For any severe music artist, this opportunity to learn and grow without negatively impacting their follower-count is a significant advantage.
  • It lets an artist make the rules: The artist is in charge. Not only is recording and uploading to SoundCloud easy, but artists also don’t have to cater to any label or music company’s policies to tailor their soundtracks. An artist can pace out new releases on their schedule. Moreover, SoundCloud supports several file formats like WAV, MP3, FLAC, and AMR that let the music artist work with the most comfortable structures.
  • It lets artists add links to their official websites and online stores: A new artist will appreciate the ability to sell their music by linking their online stores to their SoundCloud Profile under their bio-details. They can also embed links for buying a file in the track’s description or comments on the Waveform.

What Are the Cons of Using SoundCloud to Start a Music Career?

It requires other social sites to work at the full potential: Although one of the most popular global websites for music sharing, SoundCloud doesn’t have a strong enough independent social presence. Despite being one of the largest music streaming platforms globally, SoundCloud has a smaller number of users compared to other social media platforms. It needs to piggyback on other platforms, like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, to reach bigger audiences.

It may not have the required trending power for all music: SoundCloud allows uploading and content-sharing across all varieties and genres of music, but not all of them can generate enough SoundCloud plays. Specific genres like Rap, or songs that can be tagged into multiple categories, tend to do very well on SoundCloud. Most other genres do not catch the audience’s eye.

It ultimately needs visuals for successful marketing: Although music artists can concentrate on the audio with more focus, the right visuals are necessary for creating a professional presence. An artist has to develop appealing profiles and add at least a few quality videos to lure a curious audience to their music.

It requires more marketing strategies than simply sharing music: A new artist must think up several marketing methods to get their music out to the world. Apart from requesting known contacts to share their music, they need to organize polls, ask for audience participation in mini-competitions and enhance their content’s visibility to obtain more SoundCloud plays.

It can be expensive for new artists: SoundCloud subscriptions are comparatively affordable. That said, it can be a costly choice for artists until they can generate and maintain the minimum required organic SoundCloud plays to monetize their content. Moreover, the site pays a percentage of its income to the artist who cuts. This means that even if the artist can generate the required number of real SoundCloud plays, the income range will likely vary month to month.

It can be detrimental to mental health: The number of plays received by a file determines its worth and visibility in search results. Rather than nuances of music, artists who are easily affected by public opinion can find themselves suffering mentally and emotionally if they use the platform as the first choice for launching their music career. The social networking features also render artist most vulnerable to scathing and harsh public reactions. They may not be able to focus on generating unique and quality content when the mind is preoccupied with strategies to improve SoundCloud play counts. Mental health is an often ignored but important casualty when it comes to attempting to break big on the internet.

It doesn’t allow for creating albums: While the website is useful for sharing individual files, artists can’t group their files into collections or albums. This means each song needs to be uploaded, tagged, downloaded, transmitted, or reposted as individual files. Listeners who want to listen to a set of files cannot discover or download them together because of this drawback of SoundCloud. This feature can be off-putting to many listeners, and it may push them away from engaging with an artist’s larger body of work.

Conclusion

Although SoundCloud does have a few pitfalls, its pros outweigh the cons. Ultimately, SoundCloud is not just about distributing music, and it’s an ever-growing and dynamic music community in itself. Hence, it remains an apt platform for any serious artist in the music industry to launch oneself online.

The Group Rep Presents “Holiday Traditions and Trappings”

The Group Rep presents a  collection of virtual plays around the theme of surviving the holidays.

So this year has been a tough one…for everyone. Theatre has been hammered, obviously and I am repeatedly amazed at how tenacious and creative those in the theatre world have been. Producing online plays and continuing to bring the stories they love to the world. In times like these story tellers are more important than ever. They heal us, they embrace us, they bring us hope and comfort and inspiration. They help us through this stormy, painful and difficult time.

This collection of stories and plays from the very good people of the Group Rep are exactly what we need. They are humorous, tender, poignant and beautifully put together.

“Holiday Traditions and Trappings” is written and performed by the members of the Group Rep and like some gorgeous family photo album, brought out especially for the holiday season, they remind us of our humanity and community and of the importance of love and connection in all our lives.

The stories range from whimsical Mexican Christmas memories, cheese stores of love, sisters finding a way to love Christmas, confusing sexy viral gifts, Santa as a lady and even a musical!! It’s hard to pick a favorite, so I won’t. Suffice it to say that each and every one of these delightful, charming plays are deliciously good, filled with brilliant performances and hilarious characters and the spirit of the season.

I love the way these plays are shot. Instead of a haphazard, boring single shot of the stage, like so many other viral plays, they have taken such care to compose everything. It’s really beautifully done and makes such a huge difference! The Group Rep has a reputation for encouraging new playwrights and for innovative and inspiring work. And this production, so badly needed, is a lovely way to spend an hour or so.

I miss the theatre. I miss everything about seeing a show. Trying to find parking, hanging about in the lobby, squeezing in the sometimes squeaky seats, the darkness before the first act, the anticipation, intermission and final curtain…everything. As a writer I would attend several shows a week sometimes. I remember complaining sometimes that it was too much…what a ninny!!

I’m thrilled that Group Rep has hung on, we have lost too many small theatres to this horrible pandemic. We need local theatre more than ever now. Their wonderfully supportive members are to be congratulated on their uplifting and heartening work.

They’ve brought 46 years of bringing theatre to NoHo !!! Bravo!!

“Holiday Traditions and Trappings” runs till New Year’s Day and you can go to the Group Rep website for details and tickets. https://thegrouprep.com

All eight plays have been written by Group Rep members. Cast size for each play ranges from 1-4 actors. The holiday event features 19 actors. Some of the shows have been filmed on the Group Rep stage with safe Covid protocols adhered to; others have been video captured. The event is produced by Kathleen Delaney and Brooklyn Sample for the Group Rep. Music composed by Marc Antonio Pritchett. Video capture and assembly by Doug Engalla. Lighting design by Douglas Gabrielle. Sound design by Sammy Strittmatter and technical direction by Bert Emmett.

The Initial Divorce Consultation: Everything You Need to Know

No matter if you are seeking a quick divorce or have already prepared yourself for a time-consuming complicated divorce procedure, you need to consider all the details and options properly before you get a big start. Until you are not a well-qualified lawyer, you’d better find someone to get a closer look at your marriage and divorce case.

When you get a dignant specialist, you will never make any crucial decision or move on with your case prior to your first serious meeting with a divorce attorney. The thing is that you cannot turn up at the meeting with blank thoughts and ideas. The better you prepare for the first meeting, the better outcomes you will get. More to this, the initial divorce consultation will allow you to plan, decide on your further steps, even save your marriage and analyze the ground you stand on.

In fact, when you decide to get divorced, the initial divorce consultation will be a milestone of your future happiness, if you prepare yourself and use the meeting properly.

With Divorce Questions at Hand

When meeting a divorce attorney for the first time, it is your interest to get prepared in advance. Although the lawyer will have a certain plan of the meeting and he will ask you appropriate questions to build up a picture of your upcoming divorce, your active participation is welcome as well. Since it is you who pay for the meeting, you may also handle the conversation to let it flow in the right direction. More to this, if you write down all the issues you are interested in prior to the meeting and take the notes in the course of it, nothing important will slip away from you. This way not only the attorney but also you will see the whole picture of the divorce. Lacking ideas for good questions and preparation for the initial meeting, consult a trustworthy divorce platform for help. So, you should put in some effort to get most of it.

Decide on the Next Steps

Sometimes you don’t clearly understand what the divorce case is about until you get everything clarified by a divorce attorney. He/she will not only inform you about general divorce issues, your case peculiarities and provide you with tips about divorce packet, but also help you understand your further steps. The divorce specialist may bring you light on multiple options on how to deal with your divorce case. Instead of nurturing a bloody revenge to your ex in the court or struggling with unbearable fear of upcoming hearing, you may consider mediation, coming to an agreement with your ex-spouse and going through an uncontested divorce, or you may take a break and postpone the divorce procedure to settle your financial and personal hurdles. Anyway, the initial divorce consultation is a vital step to take a look at your situation from the different side and get professional assistance to have the best possible outcomes in the end.

Get to Know the Attorney Better

Remember, that you are not at the job interview, you don’t have to answer the lawyer’s questions only, you may interview him/her as well. Eventually, you are going to cooperate with this person for a decent time and he/she will have a great impact on your future. So, feel free to ask your divorce attorney about previous experience, methods of work, famous cases, failures, professional qualities, Tennessee divorce document preparation services, he/she uses and other things that might have an effect on your case. Get the feeling that this is the right person to deal with, only then you may proceed with your divorce issues.

Feel Free to Change your Mind

If you have attended the initial divorce meeting, it doesn’t oblige you to anything. You don’t have to cooperate with the same attorney, the meeting may have given you the idea that it will be difficult for you to deal with this person. Even more, if you set on the divorce procedure, it doesn’t mean that you have to move on no matter what. Feel free to change your decision. Maybe the clarification of the divorce procedure and its consequences has inspired you to save your marriage, so do what you wish and need.

Make Your Own Choice

The initial divorce consultation is the platform either to build on the divorce or to save your marriage. Anyway, it is a great tool to make the right decision. With the help of the first meeting you may analyze your past, consider all present circumstances and succeed with your future. One significant thing to realize is that no specialist will decide for you, you have to take it all from the meeting and make your own choice.

Which piano is right for you – Grand or upright piano?

If you’re considering investing in a piano there are several factors to consider, none more important than which piano is right for you.

Here we look into the differences between the grand piano and the upright piano.

The Grand Piano

The grand piano is iconic, traditional, elaborate and…grand. It’s regularly the focal point of a hotel lobby, concert hall or gala and it’s enough to fill a room on its own. The grand showcases affluence in a beautifully simple way. It can often feature luxurious finishes of silk, ebony or marble, with engraving a stylish addition. It doesn’t look as stunning as it does by accident – a team of skilled hands can spend a whole year constructing a single grand piano, with every detail finely tuned in order to reach perfection. It is built to stand the test of time, to become a family heirloom and to provide generations with entertainment.

As well as manufacturing being an incredibly detailed process, the general upkeep of the grand piano is also a timely and fairly costly venture – although essential. It requires regular, often professional, cleaning. It must also be tuned at least twice a year, which usually entails the hire of an expert and around £60 a time – £90 for a pitch raise. It will cost more than this if it isn’t regularly tuned. The initial price of a new grand piano is considerably higher than that of an upright and averages in the UK between £10,000 to £100,000, although second-hand grand pianos can be much less.

The sound produced from a grand piano is unrivalled. This is where it undoubtedly beats the upright, no question. It’s richer, deeper, more elegant and with harmony sounds much more refined. A pianist can repeat the same key without having to fully release it, which creates smooth transitional tones. The keys on a grand piano are almost 30% longer than those on an upright, which gives significantly better leverage and more dynamic range. Gravity works with the grand action, by naturally bringing down the hammer to its resting position quickly.

The Upright Piano

For a beginner, or for someone with limited space and/or budget the upright piano is a suitable choice. It is an upgrade to the digital keyboard, often a consideration for people with the same criterias. However, the upright will provide room for growth, skill development and a greater understanding of the instrument that could be gained from a keyboard. It’s an acoustic instrument and produces a tone quality that just can’t be matched through digital technology.

An upright piano will usually sit along a wall, or window and it’s compact size means that it can live in apartments, small living areas or hallways without taking up too much room. It is relatively easy to transport between locations and doesn’t require much upkeep. It’s initial cost can be anywhere from a couple of hundred pounds for a second-hand upright, to a few thousand pounds for a brand new piano. They’re often free to a good home too and can also be found in second hand stores and charity shops, making them much more accessible than the grand.

“The Court Jester”

***

“The Court Jester”

By Waide Riddle

The act begins. The Court Jester bows.
The jester’s gesture wins applause from the crowd.
SILENCE!! Motions his Highness!

Bells, bangles & baubles

Trinkets for the wealthy and royal snobs.
Tall tales and comedy skits and jokes for the village folks.
He swears he’s no hoax. Tricks with a mix of acrobatic kicks.
He has their attention!
He insists his mysteries are of the non- fiction.
The King is so pleased as the Queen smiles with uneasy ease.

A glittery costume of shiny tassels

He tells of the legends of dragons and magic castles.
A sudden spin and he’s a flashy blur.
A whir that startles his audience.

… purples and blues… orange and yellow hues… violets and pinks…
… fire and ice colors… a spectral marvel hovered…
… a gleam and sheen of blinding red and green…
… rainbow smoke… a billow of crimson fire came… which turned into a cobalt flame…

Commoners and royalty scream at his game.
The act is finished. The jester vanished.
The crowd roars with pleasure at the royal Christmas gift that is such a treasure.
The village musicians and minstrels break into a musical ditty.

The masquerade and charade is over. What a pity!
Now, let the holiday dance begin, as the kingdom’s choir sings in…

“What a merry ole’ time it has been!”
“Cheers to the Court Jester!”
“For it is he who has won us again!”

The Court Jester  audiobook is narrated by *Emmy winner Michael McHenry. Originally published in the poetry collection “Speculative Poets of Texas” (2015/Edited by Juan Perez).

Getting a Dog during Holiday Break!

It’s that time of year again!  So many people everywhere are planning on getting a puppy or rescue dog around this time.

I often get a surge in business 1-3 months after the holidays for that very reason.  There are some downfalls to getting a dog while on break and I’d like to give you some tips to avoid those pitfalls in case you are looking to add to your family this holiday season 🙂

Downfalls:

You are very relaxed and just wanting to enjoy your time off.

You and the family spend many days snuggling your new dog or puppy.

Everyone is eating carbs and sugar and feeling sluggish and sleepy, haha!

Starting off with these downfalls causes a lot of frustration to build quickly, not realizing how much work it is once the family’s schedule goes back to normal.  The dog isn’t fitting in and resentment and frustration builds.  We see this especially when puppies are bought around the holidays and then 6 months later, they are uncontrollable.  That is why starting off on the right foot is crucial, even though you are on vacation.

So why are those things a downfall?

-You are relaxed!  Who wants to set up a training schedule, decide on rules and boundaries as a family, set up a potty training routine (even for adult dogs from shelters), plan how you will handle things your dog or puppy does that you don’t like, where to keep them safely, if you are going to crate train them, etc.  This is a lot of work that many aren’t up for this time of year.  Then, weeks or months later you are in trouble with the behavior of your dog or puppy.

-Too much snuggling!  Dogs and puppies have a honeymoon period. If you spend hours with you and the kids snuggling your new dog or puppy half the time or more then training and teaching the dog or puppy how to be alone, you will have a dog that doesn’t listen or worse, develops separation anxiety.

-BAD FOOD!  Spending one time of year eating what you want changes how you feel.  It actually lessens your tolerance and patience because you are more tired.  This is a very real thing that happens, haha!  Who has the patience for the new dog barking at the neighbors or the puppy peeing everywhere!  Think about it!

So what DO you do to have a successful time with your new dog or puppy?

-Have a schedule for your new dog.  They need to be taught to be alone quickly.  Too much attention the first few days can be very detrimental long term.

-Have a rotation of training time with food or body language with NO pets if the dog is unsure or overly excited.  Don’t put that pressure on them until training time is over (start with 10-15 minutes a couple times a day) and the dog is calm.

-You need your walks scheduled with a major important point.  KNOW how you want to teach them heel.  Have a strategy, dog training philosophy and start that right away.

-Make sure any kids know what to do with the new dog or puppy as far as handling, pets and excitement.

-Make sure you all have the same rules.  The puppy will be small so he can jump up. The puppy will be huge so he can’t jump up or be on the furniture…etc.

-Rotate the dog in a room, crate, space of his own through out the day and be quiet in the house.  You can play radio or something to help drown out your noise in the house while you are off and home.

-Know how to teach your dog boundaries right away from day one, like stopping at the front door, etc.  If you do not know how to do this, hours of research on youtube or hire a trainer right away to start asap!

-Focus on earned affection.  This just means you dog or puppy does something to get affection.  Affection is payment for a dog and if we pay for nothing, they become spoiled, entitled, then often confused and anxious because no one is in charge.  A puppy can get affection for small things and older and more mature dogs would get attention after say, a long walk or training time.

I hope these tips gives you an idea of how to be successful with your new dog or puppy this year so we see LESS behavioral issues and less rescue and shelter returns next year 🙂

Have a wonderful holiday.  Wishing you all safety and health this holiday season.

The Mosaic Method of Creating a Solo Show

As the tumult of 2020 comes to an end, I invite you to make some meaningful progress on your solo show so that your one-person play can come to fruition in 2021.

With that intention in mind, I invite you to experiment with what I’ve coined the “Mosaic Method” of creating a solo show.

As I always say to my students, the process of writing a solo show is much like that of creating a vibrant mosaic.

First, you accumulate many beautiful pieces, then you sift through these eclectic pieces to determine which ones will make it into your final work of art, and finally you arrange these pieces into one cohesive masterpiece.

While I cannot delve into this methodology in its entirety in a single blog entry, I will give you a tasty sample that is sure to help you make some meaningful progress on your solo show.

The Mosaic Method is rarely linear and therefore freewriting without censorship is an important aspect of this approach.

Below are a few poignant questions to help you begin to develop some magnificent mosaic pieces, and eventually allow them to culminate into a powerful one person play.

So, grab a pen and some paper and, one at a time, freewrite on these questions and see what your responses reveal to you about what your solo story wants to be.

1) What is an important question you have sought to answer throughout your life?

In traditional playwriting, there is usually a Dramatic Question.

A Dramatic Question is the central question that your solo show and/or the protagonist of the play (which may or may not be you) seeks to resolve throughout the course of your script. The story arc and various plot points should contribute to answering that question.

In order to avoid a solo show that merely meanders from one anecdote to another, with no clear direction or driving force behind it, it is essential to determine what Dramatic Question your play aims to answer.

For example, maybe your story asks:

Does true love exist?

Will money lead to real happiness?

What is healthy sexuality?

Is there a God?

How can serious trauma be healed?

And so on and so forth.

There may be several important questions that you are currently pondering or have pondered over the course of your life; so, it may take you some time to determine which question you want to focus on for this particular solo show and that is ok. Take your time and explore.

Let your intuition, curiosity and creativity guide you and eventually the dominant dramatic question will become clear.

2) Who are the primary people that have impacted your life the most?

Any good play has captivating characters. Whether we love them or hate them, the cast of characters in a play must capture our attention and help to propel the story forward.

With that in mind, consider who your mentors have been, what enemies you’ve battled, which lovers you’ve connected with, the best friends you’ve related to, the mysterious strangers you’ve encountered, and the family you’re from. Start to evaluate all of the main characters of your life.

As you isolate who these key players are, recall how they have influenced you and your life journey. Reflect upon the lessons they have taught you, and how they have changed and challenged you for better or for worse.

3) What is the genre of your life story?

Every solo show has its own style.

As you assess your life, does it have the tone of a romantic comedy, a dark comedy, an action film, a family classic, a horror or a thriller, a mystery or a drama, or even a true love story?

Honing in on the “genre” of your life will help you give a personality to your one person play and identify which stories from your life might best suit that “genre.”

That’s the beauty of solo shows, there’s no one way to do it, and no “correct” style to adhere to. Therefore, categorizing your life in this way will help guide you as you add your unique touch to the genre of solo theatre.

Hopefully, freewriting on these questions and considering these concepts has helped you to start to collect some colorful mosaic pieces, and don’t stop here! Check out the various solo theatre resources below to help your mosaic pieces manifest into a solo theatre masterpiece.

NOT Boring Christmas Songs Playlist

***

This post of What We’re Listening to music blog is holiday themed. Wait! It’s the perfect music post if:

  1. If you never hear that Mariah Carey song ever again and you’ll be just fine. That song that shall not be named is NOT on our playlist!
  2. If you are the Grinch of all Grinches.
  3. If Christmas songs make you physically ill.
  4. If you wish there were some soul, rhythm or something that would make you move.
  5. If you think Christmas songs are the same – boring.

We promise, this is not a boring Christmas song playlist.

Here’s our NOT-BORING CHRISTMAS SONG PLAYLIST.

And below are some of our favorites.

The Pretenders’ “2,000 Miles.” Chrissy Hynde’s voice makes everything all better.

We all need some Otis Redding right now. “Merry Christmas Baby” is a jam.

Ty Dolla $ign’s “Alone For Christmas” ft. Kiana Ledé is a perfect 2020 Christmas song.

For all our Gen Xers, it wouldn’t be Christmas without The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping” on the playlist.

And because we celebrate so many holidays in December, here’s Reel Big Fish’s “Whatever U Celebrate.”  Ska always brings so much joy. Maybe they should Ska-ify that Mariah Carey song?

Discovering Turkey and the “WOW” Effect

Active World Journeys in Turkey.

Turkey is a place of tantalizing ancient civilizations and spectacular natural wonders. With more ancient Greek and Roman sites than in Italy and Greece combined, and having more than half of all the places mentioned in the bible, Turkey is chock-full of dynamic history, fabled stories and iconic characters.

In Southern Turkey, along the Mediterranean coast, is one of the world’s 10 best long-distance trekking routes – The Lycian Way. Local tour guide experts at Demavend Travel took me on a “best of” hiking tour there. It just blew me away. I hiked through ancient Greek and Roman ruins, experienced some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, took a boat ride to a lost sunken city, ate meals in authentic Turkish villages (mouth-watering Turkish cuisine with tea and coffee that has been a way of life for centuries!), marvelled at the nearly two dozen eternal flames that come up naturally from the rocks in this area, and just couldn’t believe the spectacular vistas of the Turkish riviera from atop the mountains that seem to rise sheer out of the sea. This quickly became one of my favourite treks of all time. Just WOW.

Mayra, Turkey – Active World Journeys

One of the places worth a special extra note along the Lycian coast we went to is a town called Myra. It has an impressive necropolis but what amazed me was a stop we made at St. Nicholas Church. I learned it has over half a million pilgrims and visitors each year because Saint Nicholas, the inspiration for the jolly character we know as St. Nick / Santa Claus, lived in Myra where he was a bishop and dedicated his life to humanity and service of others, especially poor children. Who knew!? I admit, I didn’t. But that’s the beauty of travel, you’re always learning. Just WOW.

Hadrian’s Gate, Turkey – Active World Journeys

After the hiking tour, we went to Antalya, a charming resort and yacht type city. The old city centre has been restored to retain much of its historical character; most famous is the impressive Hadrian’s gate. (Apparently this Roman emperor Hadrian really got around, I’ve been to several other countries where they have walls, gates and monuments dedicated to him for his visit.). The museum in Antalya really gave me an understanding of all the Hittite, Greek, Roman, Persian, and Byzantine civilizations that existed in this area of Southern Turkey.

Cappadocia, Turkey – Active World Journeys

Next, we were on a road trip north bound to Cappadocia following one of the ancient caravan trading routes. On our way there we visited Aspendos, known for being the best-preserved theatre in the world from antiquity. It really gave me goose bumps to walk inside it as it is 100% in-tact and is still used today for music and drama festivals. Just WOW. Also, on our way we stopped at the caravanserai of Sultan Hani, the largest caravanserai of the country, which was basically a hostel / Inn type complex for the caravans during the 13th Century. There were areas for trading and doing business, socializing and separate areas for the animals. It must have been a hustling and bustling place, full of all kinds of sounds and smells back in its heyday.

Cappadocia, Turkey – Active World Journeys

In the early evening we arrived in Cappadocia, undeniably a nature fantasy and it almost feels like another planet with its exceptional geological formations. Wind, rain and frost have sculpted this superb scenery in the volcanic rock during millions of years and eroded into hundreds of spectacular pillars and forms. They refer to many of them “fairy chimneys” as they are unique and feature bizarre large toadstool like caps which protect the rest of the chimney from erosion. The early Christian people at the heart of Cappadocia realized that the soft rocks could be easily carved out to form houses, churches and monasteries (. with decorative frescoes and reliefs). There is a vast and deep inter-connected “honeycombed” type dwelling system in the rocks, designed so the early Christians fleeing persecution could hide and protect themselves.

The next morning at sunrise I took a hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia. It was surreal and wonderful. Cappadocia is considered one of the top destinations in the world to experience a hot air balloon ride. With at least 50 other hot-air balloons all around us, it felt like a whimsical symphony ballet of movement taking place in the sky as we slowly bobbed and soared above the striking landscape almost effortlessly. Just WOW.

Afterwards, we did a nice hike in the red valley area of Cappadocia, another beautiful valley in Cappadocia with spectacular formations and colours, full of old cave houses, complexes and hidden ancient churches. We picked and munched on walnuts and grapes along the trail. (Talk about fresh, healthy and organic hiking snacks!)

Pamukkale, Turkey – Active World Journeys

We departed the next day to visit the famous travertine terraces of Pamukkale. It has the meaning “cotton castle” and is one of the most remarkable natural sites in the world with its cotton white plateaus, pale blue waters topping of the shallow pools and gently cascading down the drape-like stalagmites onto the lower levels for over 300 feet. Just WOW.

Ephesus, Turkey – Active World Journeys

Next up, no trip to Turkey is complete without a visit to Ephesus. In the Roman period, it was for many years the second largest city of the Roman Empire; ranking behind Rome. The Apostle Paul made the city his base for more than two years while traveling around on his missionary work. Ephesus contains the largest collection of Roman ruins in the eastern Mediterranean. Only an estimated 15% has been excavated too! The ruins that are visible gave me some idea of the city’s original splendour and the names associated with the ruins are evocative of its former bustling life. Just WOW.

Galata Tower, Istanbul, Turkey – Active World Journeys

My trip concluded in Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city. It is a place literally where east meets west (one part of the city is in Europe and the other in Asia) and ancient meets modern. I started the day with a visit to the Beyoglu district, crossing over the famous Galata Bridge, where throngs of fishermen are a common site, to visit Galata Tower, one of Istanbul’s main attractions. The tower consists of nine stories and it measures just under 220 feet in height. When it was built, it represented the tallest structure in Istanbul (then known as Constantinople), and was designed with military purposes, so walls are over 12 feet in thickness. Galata tower offers an amazing view of the historical peninsula on the observatory deck with a 360-degree view of the entire city.

Afterwards, I continued walking through the historical peninsula area and visited The Topkapi Palace which was the primary residence of the Ottoman Sultans for approximately 400 years of their 624-year reign. As well as a royal residence, the palace was a setting for state occasions and royal entertainments. Nearby Topkapi palace I made a visit to the famous Hagia Sophia, considered to be one of the world’s most important monuments, a masterpiece and example of great architectural beauty. The marvel complex anchors the old city of Istanbul and has served for centuries as an Orthodox patriarchal basilica, and later as a mosque and as museum. (James Bond fans will recognize it from the Connery era film “From Russia with Love” along with the Basilica Cistern, an ancient underground Roman cistern that you can walk through.)

Blue Mosque, Istanbul, Turkey – Active World Journeys

The next visit took me to the Blue Mosque which was built between 1609 and 1616. The design is the culmination of two centuries of both Ottoman mosque and Byzantine church development. It incorporates some Byzantine elements of the neighbouring Hagia Sophia with traditional Islamic architecture and is considered to be the last great mosque of the classical period. My last stop of the day was to the famous Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily. It’s literally a city within a city within a city. Just WOW.

Hagia Sophia, Istanbul, Turkey – Active World Journeys

I was amazed by the impeccable hospitality of the Turkish people on my trip. Their mentality is that whatever religion you are from, whichever country you come from, whatever language you speak, you are God’s guest. This was truly a once in a lifetime trip that left me with a much deeper appreciation of our shared world heritage sites and history in Turkey. I was humbled by the beauty of the sea, mountains and deserts of this country as well. In fact, I think I blurted out “WOW” at least every hour each day at all of the amazing places I visited and experienced.

I’ll be hosting a 10-day Classic Turkey Tour in June of 2022. Let me know if you’d like more information on the trip which I’ve hand-crafted, based on my incredible experience in this blog story.

(At the time of this writing, Turkey currently has no restrictions in place for American tourists as far as quarantine or bringing negative test results with you. If you do travel there during the pandemic, make sure to check on the current health and safety requirements regarding masks, curfews etc.)

Now More than Ever: Making Merry with Classic Holiday Films

Since so many of us will be spending a great deal of time at home during this holiday season (unlike any other), I feel almost duty-bound to steer you toward some holiday classics, including some that may have escaped your attention. (That is, unless you’re consumed by the glut of more recent Hallmark holiday fare).

One streaming service that has its fair share of holiday classics is our ol’ friend, YouTube. The classics library has grown in the last few years, so you can find films there for free that you might ordinarily have to pay to rent. (There are “rental” classics available, but I’m sticking to the free offerings.) For instance, you can see the 1951 “Scrooge,” starring the incomparable Alastair Sim as the definitive Scrooge in the best version of “A Christmas Carol,” with either the original black and white version or the “colorized” version available (but please don’t tell me you watched it in color). “The Bells of St. Mary’s” (1945),which rarely gets enough play on cable, can also be found here, and though it’s not technically a Christmas movie, it’s both amusing and heartwarming, with fine performances from Bing Crosby, Ingrid Bergman—and Henry Travers as a Scrooge-lite (and a far cry from his Clarence the Angel in “It’s a Wonderful Life” (also sublime, ‘nuff said). There is also a charming Christmas pageant where Crosby’s Father O’Malley says he “wouldn’t change a word.” You’ll feel the same way. If you missed Laurel and Hardy (and the great Henry Brandon as the gleefully wicked Mr. Barnaby) in “Babes in Toyland” on TCM, you can also see a good print on YouTube (though TCM is showing it again later this month); the Rankin/Bass classics “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” can also be seen here in pristine versions. If you’re hankering for a good Christmas noir, you may want to give “Christmas Holiday” (1944) a try. It stars Deanna Durbin and Gene Kelly as newlyweds, and while Durbin gets to sing a few numbers, it’s a melancholy tale of an ill-fated love set against the backdrop of a Christmas holiday. And no, Mr. Kelly does not dance. If you want a bonafide romantic tearjerker with Christmas as a backdrop (in the final scenes), you may want to see the 1939 “Love Affair” starring Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne. It never fails to move me, no matter how many times I’ve seen it.

If you have Turner Classic Movies and you’re a classic Christmas movie fan, it seems that the network is being extra-sensitive to our “feel-good” needs—even including some rarely shown offerings. TCM is including several delightful holiday staples in its week-long Christmas marathon, such as “Christmas in Connecticut,” “The Bishop’s Wife,” “Meet Me in St. Louis,” and “The Shop Around the Corner” (all of which are personal favorites and essential viewing, especially if you’re fans of graceful, amusing, heartwarming holiday fare). “The Man Who Came to Dinner” (1941)  is a fast-paced comedy with a Christmas setting and fine performances from Ann Sheridan, Monty Woolley, Reginald Gardiner and Bette Davis (an atypical role for her—but she really wanted to do the film). There is also the exquisite 1940 “Remember the Night” starring Barbara Stanwyck and Fred McMurray. She’s a shoplifter on trial, he’s a prosecutor, and for various reasons he takes her home to Indiana to meet his folks during Christmas vacation. It’s a beautifully played, poignant romance with an ending that may surprise you. It has become part of the TCM Christmas repertoire in the past few years, and I’m delighted it is. There are other holiday romances on TCM’s schedule, including “Desk Set” (1957) with Spencer Tracy, Katharine Hepburn, Joan Blondell—and a computer named Emerac, and “Holiday Affair” (1949) with war widow Janet Leigh having to decide between suitors Wendell Corey and Robert Mitchum (guess who she chooses?).  It’s a lovely film, with Mitchum and Corey both sympathetic and displaying the requisite light touch—and it also features the appealing Gordon Gebert as Leigh’s young son.

Besides these romances, there are the films that contain some traces of black comedy and even dark crimes. “Lady on a Train”–no, not “The Lady on the Train”—stars Deanna Durbin as a young lady who thinks she sees a murder out her train window (come to think of it, “The Lady on the Train” had a similar idea). It has some songs, some mystery—and the great Dan Duryea. “We’re No Angels” is an underrated 1955 Christmas comedy with Humphrey Bogart, Peter Ustinov and Aldo Ray as escaped Devil’s Island convicts who save Christmas for the befuddled shopkeeper Leo G. Carroll and his wife Joan Bennett. Also on the TCM slate is a rare, late-night showing of “The Silent Partner” (1978), starring Elliott Gould as a reserved bank teller who gets into a deadly game of cat and mouse with bank robber Christopher Plummer. If you like nicely plotted, satisfying thrillers (apart from some excessive violence), you cannot go wrong. It’s a must-see. Finally, I was going to mention “The Cheaters” (1945) earlier for YouTube—but TCM will be (finally) showing what I hope will be a pristine copy on December 23. It stars the great Joseph Schildkraut as a broken-down actor who is taken in by a well-to do but selfish family (among them Eugene Palette and Billie Burke) for Christmas—and how he helps the family (and himself) achieve redemption. It has both humor and sentiment to spare, and a fine monologue for Schildkraut enacting a certain section of “A Christmas Carol.” See it by all means, especially on December 23 for its TCM broadcast.

Of course, in terms of other personal favorites, I must include “Love Actually” (usually on HBO, though I believe it’s on AMC this year), “A Christmas Story” (usually on TNT and TBS) “Holiday Inn,” “White Christmas” and “Miracle on 34th Street” (all of which normally appear on AMC—albeit with many commercial breaks, alas. Note: “Miracle on 34th Street” is currently not on the AMC schedule.) In any case, there is much to see, and perhaps with the extra time, you’ll re-acquaint yourself with an old favorite, or treat yourself to something you haven’t seen.

Till we meet again, have a healthy and safe holiday.

Where to Get Your Custom Beach Tote

0

Were you just at the beach or resort when you saw a killer beach tote bag?

Are you looking to see if you can copy the latest celebrity beach tote bag trend? Well, let me tell you something. You can! It is easier than you think. However, the secret is to know where to look and what to order. Because anything and everything can be made possible, you just need to know the right wholesale supplier to make your stylistic dreams come true. Don’t worry, all secrets will be revealed here.

What is a Custom Beach Tote?

A custom beach tote is exactly what you think it is. However, it doesn’t have to be limited by just what you have seen on the street. A beach tote bag has a standard style and dimension, but honestly it could be any type of tote that is used to put stuff in when you go out to some other location. So, generally, there are a few types of tote bags that you could choose from when you are looking to purchase a bulk amount of custom tote bags.

There are classic tote bags, grocery tote bags, and beach tote bags. Each one has pros and cons. The limiting factor is the dimensions of the bag and slightly the material, but not much. The classic tote bag is the smallest in shape and design. It was made and still commonly used to carry books. You can find them at bookstores or nonprofit fundraising events. These are easily identified by the rounded corners on the bottom edges of the bad. The grocery bag is much the same. The only difference is that the edges are square and the bag itself is slightly bigger.

The main question, though, revolves around the beach tote bag. The beach tote bag is a unique item in the bag world. It is longer than it is tall, and it has straps that extend around the entire bag starting and ending at the handles. This makes it incredibly stable and strong. This also makes it highly useful for carrying large items, items that you would normally carry to the beach or while shopping.

Can I Buy It from A Retail Store?

Sure, but you are only going to get one or two and they might not have the style that you like and they might not have the color that you like or the size and they probably can’t customize the bag at all. So, if you are trying to buy it in bulk or are hoping to have the bags customized in some way, you are better off not buying from a local big box retail store.

Instead, if you are looking to purchase a large amount of custom beach tote bags, then you need to buy them from an online wholesale sit like Tote Bag Factory. These online merchants aren’t just wholesale sellers, they are basically the manufacturer of the products. That means you can get direct access to all of the products that this manufacturer makes. When you buy from a small wholesale shop or from a retail store, you have to deal with just the inventory that they have at the time, and you have to deal with the costs that retailers add to the wholesale price for their cut of the profits.

Don’t go to a retailer unless you want the transaction to be completely disappointing. Instead, you need to trust an online wholesaler with a stellar reputation and a full line customizable beach tote bags. They can offer you all types of styles and bags that you never thought were an option. Don’t limit yourself to the inventory on the shelves. The benefit of virtual inventory is that it is unlimited and made specific to order. You will always get exactly what you order in the time frame that you need it.

Why are Tote Bags Good Promotional Items?

Beach tote bags make great promotional items and gifts for friends, family, employees, and guests because they are fully functional and long lasting. This means that people won’t immediately throw them out. They will want to use them all the time. Instead of giving your friends a wasted gift. Give them a present that they will feel connected to through the branded logo or image. Think deeper than a poorly designed pen or note pad. If you are looking for promotional items, there is nothing better than the visibility of the beach tote bag.

Everything You Need To Know About Melatonin For Dogs

0

Just like humans, dogs are able to synthesize a chemical in their body called melatonin. This chemical is essentially a hormone produced by the pineal gland which is tucked deep inside the brain. While most dogs produce just enough melatonin on their own, others may need supplemental doses in order to help them manage some medical conditions.

Generally speaking, melatonin is mostly used for regulating the sleep cycles, but it has proven beneficial for treating all kinds of anxiety, hyperactivity and severe diseases like Cushing’s. However, while it is always recommended to talk to your vet before introducing any new supplements into your dog’s health care regime, you should be well acquainted as well with what melatonin for dogs actually does.

We have compiled the most important information you should know about melatonin including its main uses, dosage and most importantly if it’s safe for your pet.

Photo by Adrianna Calvo from Pexels

How does melatonin work for dogs?

The production of melatonin in dogs is similar to the one in humans. As soon as it gets dark outside, the body signals the pineal gland to produce more melatonin which makes the body feel sleepy. This production decreases once the sun comes up, causing the body to wake up.

If there is a lack of melatonin production, the results are usually disrupted sleep cycles which may further lead to behavioral disorders and other more serious health conditions. Giving your dog supplemental melatonin will not only help regulate its sleeping schedule, but it will also help ease symptoms of some medical problems.

Uses of melatonin for dogs

One of the best things about melatonin is that it is a natural and chemical-free product that the body already makes. There is no need to worry about giving your pet something that may cause them some serious harm. With that being said, here are four main health benefits of using melatonin for dogs.

Cushing’s disease

Cushing’s disease occurs when there is an excess production of the cortisol hormone by the pituitary or adrenal gland. In this case, melatonin for dogs works by helping the body block the uptake of the increased cortisol production and ease the symptoms of the diseases altogether.

Insomnia

Senior dogs often suffer from insomnia, which is the inability to fall asleep, and as a result, they have a disrupted sleep schedule. In this case, a melatonin supplement may be given to dogs as it can help regulate their biorhythms and allow your pet to get a better night’s sleep.

Anxiety

Dogs may suffer from separation anxiety or phobias from loud noises like thunderstorms and fireworks causing them to feel anxious. Since the melatonin supplement generally works as a sedative, it is often given to dogs to calm them when they are going through such an uneasy experience.

Alopecia

Seasonal flank alopecia is a skin condition in dogs marked by bald patches on either side of the abdomen. Although there is no exact evidence of how melatonin helps fight seasonal alopecia, vets still prescribe it as it gives comfort to pet owners that they are combating this health condition.

Melatonin dosage for dogs

The most important factor that determines the exact melatonin dosage for your dog is its weight. For example, if your dog weighs less than 10 pounds, then the appropriate dosage would be 1 mg. Or, if it weighs more than 100 pounds, then the dosage would increase up to 3 to 6 mg.

Besides the weight, another factor that is taken into account is the medical condition your dog is combating. For example, if your pet is about to go through an anxiety experience, you can give it melatonin just before that happens.

In most cases, the average daily dose ranges from 1 to 3 times a day with 8 to 12 hours in between each dose.

Forms of melatonin for dogs

Another good thing about melatonin is that it can be consumed in different ways. Usually it’s the vet that prescribes the appropriate method of using this supplement. Here is a brief description of the four different consumption methods.

  • Chewable tablets or pills which dogs can either swallow voluntarily or by putting them inside a treat or coated with something tasty
  • Injections as an alternative to pills if your dog is suffering from Alopecia skin condition
  • Drops which may be applied to your dog’s food or a treat using an eyedropper
  • Injectable implants which are implanted under the chin and help maintain a steady level of melatonin

Is it safe to give melatonin to your pet?

While it is completely safe to give your dog melatonin, it is always recommended that you consult with your vet about the appropriate dosage. Since this supplement is completely natural, most dogs won’t even experience any side effects from using it.

However, there may be a slight chance of your dog experiencing increased heart rate, confusion, itching or fertility changes. These reactions may also be caused due to an overdose of melatonin which can additionally lead to severe diarrhea or vomiting. In this case, it is important that you contact your vet immediately to take further steps.

In the meantime, here are some tips you can follow to avoid any undesired events.

  • Always stick to the recommended dose of melatonin
  • Keep all medications in a safe place away from your dog
  • If your dog misses a dose, don’t double up on the dosage

Final thoughts

The biggest upside of giving melatonin to your pet is that it will help your dog build up its health without using chemicals or medications. In situations where your pet may be feeling anxious, hyperactive or restless, giving it this supplement can certainly ease such symptoms. Whatever health condition your furry friend may be combating, the most important thing is to stick to the proper dosage in order to achieve the best results. So in case you need to use melatonin for dogs, refer back to this guide in order to be fully acquainted with its main health benefits.

Are Studio Speakers Important For A Home Studio?

0

The advancements in technology have made it possible for producers to mix and record music in the comfort of their home.

Of course, for you to be successful in this project, you’ll need to have a safe and quiet room to carry out your operations. So, what entails a good home studio?  There are many things you need to consider before you can comfortably start doing what you do best.

Some of the main essentials that you’ll need to buy include acoustic treatment, microphone, audio interface, and headphones. If you’re a beginner and don’t know where to start, you can follow online tutorials, such as those from grooveboxstudios.com, and commence your journey. Even with all the recommendations from experts, there is one thing that many people still ignore while setting up a recording room—studio speakers. Are these devices important?  Why is it not advisable to use ordinary speakers?  Read on to find detailed answers to these frequently asked questions.

What Are Studio Speakers?

Before going deep into the topic, it’s important that you understand what these gadgets actually are. Also known as studio monitors, studio speakers are sound outputs specifically designed for a music production setup. When you see them for the first time, you’ll think studio speakers are just like any other speaker. However, when you start to use them, you’ll realize that there are glaring differences between these systems.

The main distinctive factor is the way these speakers are tuned. If this is the first time you’re coming across this word, tuning means the adjustment of various features to maximize the performance of a device. In fact, using studio monitors as your primary sound output will leave you disappointed. Similarly, your ordinary speakers are not ideal for studio mixing. So, what are the benefits of having studio monitors?  These include:

  • Improves Your End Product

Music production or mixing is all about blending different types of instruments to make a set of smoothly flowing sounds. Inasmuch as it sounds simple, it requires some special skills to get the best out of your resources. In addition to your know-how, you’ll also need to have the best equipment; otherwise, the output won’t be at the desired level. Studio monitors and headphones are among the most important tools you should purchase as you set up your home studio.

So, how does these devices improve your final output?  Well, for you to blend the sounds of instruments properly, you have to listen to each of them. Studio speakers produce a flat frequency, which allows you listen to every detail as you mix. Some people will opt for consumer speakers because they are cheap. The drawback, however, is the fact that they’re designed to smoothen whatever sound they receive and make it good for the listener. Therefore, as the producer, you’ll think everything is fine, without knowing your speakers actually hide crucial details.

  • Emulates Different Listening Environments

Today, people listen to music on different platforms, such as earphones, computer speakers, and in-car systems. All these listening environments are designed differently from each other to match the surrounding. Therefore, if you produce your music using hi-fi speakers, it might only sound great on similar systems. Playing the same sounds on your computer loudspeakers or in-car speakers will, most definitely, expose the issues in whatever you’ve produced.

Studio monitors, on the other hand, give you exactly what the music sounds like, and not what the consumer wants to hear. With their flat-frequency feature, the final product is colored in any way. As such, as you edit your recordings, you’re basically making them suitable for all listening environments. This factor makes it even easier to market your music. The perfection you achieve while doing your music production using studio monitors will be enhanced by consumer speakers, which are known to color the actual tracks and make them sound better.

Conclusion

Studio monitors have been around for many years, but some upcoming music producers are still hesitant to add them to their home studios. If you’re one of them, then you’re missing out on a lot of good things. Studio speakers are very crucial in any music production process. For one, they help you produce great music by ensuring that you listen to every single detail of whatever is being recorded or mixed. As such, you can easily perfect your files and make them pleasing to the ears of your listeners.

Also, the fact that they produce flat frequency makes them ideal for producing music to be listened through different platforms and at different environments. Everything will sound good whether played on hi-fi, in-car, or computer speakers. Therefore, investing in these gadgets will enhance your career in music production.

How Health Insurance Can Help Treat Mental Health

0

Mental and physical health are equally essential to your general well-being.

However, professional psychiatric services can be costly for both short-term crises and chronic conditions. As a result, many people struggling with such issues see the doctor less, or not at all, to save money.

Getting insurance that covers mental condition treatment can help, but only if you use it wisely. Let’s review some of the best coverage options and share some tips on how you can make the most out of it.

https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/01/30/02/20/mental-health-2019924_960_720.jpg

Insurance & Mental Health

Whether you’re already on a plan that incorporates mental health services depends on your provider. If the company does cover such assistance, it must include the following conditions in its services:

  • Substance abuse disorders
  • In-patient services and hospital stays
  • Behavioral health treatment (such as talk therapy and counseling)

While these items seem all-inclusive, not all insurers read them that way.

For example, if you need treatment for stress as part of a generalized anxiety disorder, you might get it, but not if it’s due to significant life changes. Moreover, the amount you have to copay for talk therapy depends on your insurance plan.

If you’re looking for a policy that’ll cover necessary mental health aid, there are two ways to go about it. If you use the state-provided option, you should understand the laws behind it.

Mental Health Parity Act & Medicare

The state adopted this act in 1996. It says that healthcare plans don’t need to provide mental health benefits. If they do, though, they MUST be at least equal to medical and surgical coverage.

For example, your insurers can’t require $50 in copays for visiting psychologists if they demand $35 for seeing your primary care provider. Moreover, the same non-financial treatment limits must apply.

https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2014/12/10/20/48/medic-563425_960_720.jpg

Potential Pitfalls

Insurance companies can still try to reduce their costs. For example, they might evaluate your case after a set number of therapy appointments. Your coverage could exclude specific diagnoses, as long as it clearly states it.

So, always read the fine print, or you might get stuck with a subpar plan.Medicare

The Parity Act doesn’t apply to Medicare but covers many mental health services. In a nutshell:

  • Medicare Part A. The hospital insurance also pays for the necessary in-patient treatment you’d get in a psychiatric facility.
  • Medicare Part B. If your doctor orders services outside the hospital, such as seeing a psychiatrist or a clinical psychologist, this part of the plan manages the expenses.
  • Medicare Part D. The prescription drug insurance also helps with medication costs for treating psychological conditions.

Therefore, if your current insurance company limits the scope of the services you can receive, Medicare is a possible option. It’s not the only one, though.

https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2017/08/16/14/21/psychology-2647941_960_720.jpg

Other Resources

If the coverage by Medicare isn’t enough, you could sign up for a program. Alternatively, check out the health insurance options provided by various private companies with the knowledge you have of the Parity Act.

Employee assistance programs are the most notable example if you go for the first option. Your employer pays EAP benefits, and accessing them is free for you.

Note that, while EAPs aren’t long-term solutions, they’ll take you to a professional who’d evaluate your needs, initiate short-term treatment, and get you the needed referrals.

Once you exhaust your EAP benefits, learn whether your employer has access to discounted out-of-pocket rates. If yes, you could continue to receive care from your current doctor, which is a smarter recovery strategy than changing therapists mid-treatment.

Plus, EAPs renew each year, giving you a new portion of free benefits.

If you’re employed, you could also check the variety of insurance plans that your company offers. If you need prolonged care, a more expensive policy could save you money in the long run.

The Bottom Line

Overall, it’s 100% possible to get a plan that doesn’t cost you a fortune and covers all your needs. All you need is a bit of research and persistence.

Once you’re holding a policy that provides you with the necessary services, use it. That’s the best way to get better in the long-run, and you’ll thank yourself in the future.

Who is the Dog Lady of Mexico?

 ***

“The Dog Lady of Mexico” gives hope to thousands of unwanted animals. It’s heart-warming story of love and resilience we all need right about now.

Alison Sawyer Current experienced a calling — a powerful pull that she couldn’t ignore — and gave renewed hope to the starving, unwanted cats and dogs roaming Isla Mujeres by opening Isla Animals.

“The Dog Lady of Mexico”  shares Alison’s remarkable journey, which began when she and her husband, Jeff, were soaking up the sun on the Mexican island during a much-anticipated month-long honeymoon. The stray animals roaming freely seemed to be woven into the island culture — just another aspect of the backdrop. Until she took a closer look. First, a tiny, pregnant, toothless cat caught Alison’s attention. Then along came a dog with a litter of 12. The animals were suffering, disease-ridden and without any sources of food or clean water.

Alison’s honeymoon became the catalyst to a lifelong pursuit to save as many neglected cats and dogs as humanly possible. Her first rescue took place in 2001, and before she knew it, she was assisting with the creation of the island’s first spay and neuter clinic.

“The Dog Lady of Mexico” compellingly and accurately depicts Alison’s story through a character named Rose. Her valiant efforts to help stray dogs and cats eventually grew into the nonprofit Isla Animals, which offers free spays and neuters, low-to-no cost veterinary care, arranges adoptions, and runs owner education to help whittle the number of animals destined for the same bleak existence.

The problems Alison encountered were numerous. There are no veterinarians in many areas, so most of the animals are never vaccinated or treated for parasites. The average dog is thin, mangy, and tick and flea infested. Needless to say, they are not welcome inside the home so even dogs that have owners are subject to the same conditions as street dogs. Since most of the people can’t afford a car, and taxi drivers refuse to pick up passengers with dogs, they have no way to get to a veterinarian … and the cycle just goes on and on.

Readers of “The Dog Lady of Mexico” will experience a world very different from their own, and will see firsthand the blood, sweat, tears and, yes, even laughter, that accompany such massive rescue efforts. They get to share the journey of Rose, whose life takes an uncharted course into unknown territory, and experience the passion that changed a life forever.

Alison is a recipient of The Doris Day Animal Kindred Spirit Award, and in 2007 she was invited to Mexico City for the first Forum on Small Animal Overpopulation in Mexico. To date, Alison has spayed or neutered more than 20,000 animals and promoted adoptions in Mexico, the United States and Canada. Alison resides with her husband in Boulder, Colorado.

Kelly’s Lot Gives Us a New Christmas Song!

We’re listening to “Christmas Is Calling”  from NoHo-based band Kelly’s Lot…and trying to get into the holiday spirit.

Kelly’s Lot has recorded an original song, “Christmas Is Calling,”  off their newest album, “Another Sky.”  If you’re singing the same songs, it’s time to add a new Christmas song to your playlist.

“After realizing all the loneliness that everyone is feeling I wanted to share a song that expresses how hard it is to not be able to see your loved ones during the holidays. And now as we see the lockdowns getting more strict the song hits even harder but also has a way of lifting the listener up. Hopefully it reminds everyone that we still must connect with each other, especially through the phone or computer. With platforms like Facetime, Zoom or Skype, we can see our loved ones even if they are miles away. Christmas is calling!” – Kelly Zirbes

Kelly’s Lot was formed in 1994 by Kelly Zirbes, a folk singer/songwriter with a heart for the blues. With 15 CDs and lots of touring in the USA and Europe, the band celebrates 26 years since the first night the band hit the stage at the Roxy in Hollywood. Kelly Z met guitar player and soundman, Perry Robertson in 1996, who soon after produced “Kelly’s Lot – Live at the Troubadour.” Within a year he joined the band, started writing songs with Kelly Z and added the southern rock and Texas influences that have shaped their sound. As a duo or band, they have played coffee shops, theaters, festivals, clubs, house concerts and a variety of events. In the last 10 years they have played as a 5-8 piece blues band that is well respected in the American blues scene. Some of the larger festivals they have played are Waterfront Blues, Simi Valley Cajun and Blues Festival, Ventura County Blues Festival, Lavaudieu Music Festival. Their songs have been heard in movies and television and covered by other artists. Perry Robertson, who shares songwriting and band leader credits with Kelly Z, has recorded and produced most of the band’s music including the 2019 release “Can’t Take My Soul” which featured americana, blues, folk and roots/rock creations. In May and June of 2020, Kelly Z and Perry worked with Doug Pettibone to record a new selection of songs that fit in americana genres like contemporary folk, roots rock and alt country. Six of the tracks on the album were inspired by words from fans on Facebook. Kelly Z challenged them to look in their hearts and share just one word. She then challenged herself to choose a word and write a song in two hours. This new selection is called “ANOTHER SKY” and was released on Aug 28, 2020. As a duo, a 4-piece or a full 8-piece band they always pack a lot of energy while still getting to the heart of the listener.

Kelly’s Lot weaves a variety of styles into their music. You can find rhythm and blues, roots, folk, blues, Latin grooves, rock, Irish melodies and more in their 26 years of recorded music. In Aug 2020 they celebrated 26 years since they first hit the stage in 1994 by returning to their folk roots and releasing “ANOTHER SKY.” Lead by singer/songwriter Kelly Z and guitarist/songwriter Perry Robertson, the different versions of Kelly’s lot draws on the full band of players including Rob Zucca on guitars, Matt McFadden on bass, Art Mendoza on on drums, Bill Johnston and Aviva Maloney on Sax, Dave Welch on Trumpet, Bobby Orgel on Keys and Frank Hinojosa on harp. As a duo or with the band behind them, the connection Kelly’s Lot makes with a listener or an audience is contagious.
