SPOKEN FUNK: Where POETRY and COMEDY Meet

Spoken Word + Comedy = SPOKEN FUNK

Spoken Funk www.nohoartsdistrict.comThe NoHo Arts District dot com team is proud of the unique events we have in North Hollywood every day of the week. Sundays in NoHo are no exception. Every Sunday today’s funniest comedians with the world’s most talented spoken word poets come together at the HAHA Café for Spoken Funk. More than a show, Spoken Funk is a full professional production. The experience consists of two dynamic poets, two hilarious comics, a DJ, and a host of games and prizes where the audience actually becomes a part of the show.

Spoken Funk’s resident host and co-founder is Tony Award Winner, Poetri, was recently a personal guest of President Obama at The White House’s first ever Spoken Word event. His talents have been seen worldwide on Oprah, and numerous television shows and movies. He was recently the Special Guest Entertainer at Saddleback Church’s Annual Christian Retreat. As an actor and writer of over 200 commercials for NIKE,GATORADE, NBA, and more, Poetri has proven over and over that there is a strong desire for the ministry that God has called him to. From BROADWAY to BOARDROOM, PENN STATE to the STATE PENN, Poetri is heavily requested. Proof that clean enjoyment is universal. As a highly attended and sponsored event by STEVIE WONDER, Spoken Funk remained a Hollywood staple and Nation wide phenomenon for more than six years. Their shows have been blessed with AMAZING talents including ANJELAH JOHNSON, RODNEY PERRY, MALCOLM JAMAL WARNER, SAUL WILLIAMS, and more.

{youtube}heeQcljbBeQ{/youtube}

How did you come up with the idea to fuse spoken word, comedy and music together?
How Spoken Funk was created all depends on who you ask. For some reason, I, Juren have a different recollection than my husband, Poetri. But the root is the same. We were tired of the same run of the mill spots that relied on vulgar and obscene language to be entertaining. We were sick of going to a spot and walking out feeling dirty. Poetri had already been the co-founder of another successful poetry open mic called “Da’ Poetry Lounge”. Now he wanted to do something different. So, when the opportunity arose for us to start a spoken word venue, we jumped at the chance to be different. We added “no vulgarity” comedy and threw in a dope DJ to supply music and about 10 years later, the rest is history. The show now has evolved into the premier completely clean poetry and comedy club in Southern California.

Why did you chose the NoHo Arts District as your venue to showcase Spoken Funk?
Spoken Funk started out on Sunset at the World Famous Miyagi’s restaurant. After moving from there we jumped around to a few different places but never really felt at home. Then we moved the family to the rising NoHo Arts District, from there it only seemed natural to move Spoken Funk’s home there as well. We walked into the HaHa Cafe Comedy Club one night to watch a show and immediately fell in love.

Who makes up the Spoken Funk team?
We call them Funkateers! The #TeamFunk members are Kim Allen, Brutha Gimel, Heather Parker, Mary Tawadros, Leon Pierce, Adrien Delstanche, Raquel May.

What advice can you give aspiring poets?
Hmmm, that is too long of an answer. But, in short…please write from your heart and no matter how many great poets you hear, don’t try to be anywhere like them. Be you. You are incredible enough all by yourself.

Get HOOKED, Sundays.

HOOKED: From Outcall to Answering the Call: My Journey from Hooker to Healer

We here at NoHo Arts District dot Com love to share with our readers stories of inspiration and triumph, and especially stories from our North Hollywood neighbors. So NoHo, get to know Bailey Mason and her true story of love and transformation. Catch her in her critically acclaimed solo show HOOKED on Sundays at Spirit Works Center and learn how she went from hooker to healer.

 Bailey Mason Hooked www.nohoartsdistrict.com

In her show, Bailey tells us about her time being a performer in stand-up comedy, something she was “hooked” to do. Even though she attempted to provide laughs while in the comedy clubs, her actual life was anything but funny. During this time, she was robbed, attacked, and endured the death of her mother from natural causes and her husband, not natural causes! She also found other work, even though that work wasn’t necessarily ethical or legal. HOOKED recounts Bailey Mason’s very personal transformation via her journey from hooker to healer, from outcall to answering the call and being of real service and an inspiration to others.

Whether we like it or not, our lives are about transformation. Bailey Mason was a hooker, a prostitute, a lady of the night, a sleaze bag. Turning tricks for money? What? Who? Me? So how do you deal with all the negative thrown your way and turn it into something positive and life-affirming? HOOKED is about the transformative power of love which cannot be truly realized without having seen the darker side first.

Bailey shares the true story of how her life evolved into something much more positive and spiritual as a result of finding love in a most unexpected way after living in the dark for so long. Seedy? Scary? A roller coaster ride through hell? Of course it was – and guilt ridden to be sure. But it was a rite of passage Bailey had to go through to transform herself into the person she shares with you during her autobiographical solo show. Her story needs to be told to encourage others to turn their lives around and become the person they were always meant to be, no matter what challenges appear to be in your way, and know that love will find you no matter how hard you try to hide from it.

How did you go from ‘Hooker to Healer’?
When I left home, my parents drove me to New York City, gave me $100 and said, “good luck.” Scared and alone with no marketable skills, I was forced to use the best asset I had which was my body. What was I to do? This course left to experiences I never could have imagined as a child. How does someone with no life experience escape from a life of degradation and terror? Through my powerful desire to become an successful actor I thought I should go to Hollywood. I seduced an agent to take me there. My exuberance and naivete drove me to the seedier elements of Hollywood. I got an education in how to exploit pretty, young girls. After two failed marriages, and a near death experience, I discovered I had to find another way. A friend offered to take me to church with her. I had a hard time believing there was a God who was kind and loving. After many years of struggling to make it in the industry, I decided to write my own one woman show. It was thru this creative act that I found true love. This made me question my feelings about God and gave me hope that there is love in the universe.

What type of healer are you?
After studying for four years to become a Science of Mind Practitioner, I heal through the power of prayer.

Can you give us a feel for the show?
This show is significant because it shows the resilience of the human spirit. No matter what life throws at you, there is always a way out. Let me show you how I found my way out. Perhaps you can follow.

What advice can you give young women facing difficult situations?
Find something you care about that is bigger than your situation and hang on to it and never let it go. Find a way. Find a way. There are thousands of examples of people who are in situations that they believe are impossible to escape. The power of a dream and the power of love are stronger than a situation.

What’s next for you?
Take HOOKED to New York and off Broadway!

WHEN: Sundays at 7pm. Runs through June 29, 2014

WHERE: Spiritworks Center. 260 N. Pass Ave. Burbank, CA 91505

JOE LITTLE – What Makes NOHO a Creative Hotbed?

The NoHo art community is a creative hotbed filled with talented singers, musicians, actors, dancers and visual artists. Over 50% of the people living in the district are under 35 years old. Every month, nohoartsdistrict.com will be highlighting one or two NoHo artists. If you are an artist and live or work in NoHo, please submit your bio for consideration. Today, we interviewed Joe Little, one of the most multi-talented music professionals I have seen for a while.

Tell us about your experience at Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp?
Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp was one of those experiences where I was sitting there for a moment saying to myself, “I’m actually getting paid for this?” This was probably around the time I was asked to start a blues jam with Mark Farner, Gary Hoey, and Billy Sheehan or after I helped out Alan White and his band perform the song Dream On with Steven Tyler surrounded by news cameras. Although, there were many long days and always tons of obstacles to dance around I can defiantly say that my couple years with the camp was an amazing time.

What groups have you worked with?
Being an individual that works in many areas of the music industry such as; a Performing Guitarist, Stage Management, Sound Engineering, Guitar Tech, and Music Teaching, I’m always finding myself working with someone different all the time, sometimes in somewhat surreal experiences. It’s literally someone different everyday. Just this past weekend I was working as a tech and live sound engineer at a rehearsal studio and got to work with bands and artists like Ceelo Green, Aloe Black, Najee, Janet Robin, alongside with many major label newly singed, up and coming acts featuring some of the best musicians in the world. While I’ve done post production audio work for film stuff, recently I did something staring Jeff Corwin which was a TV show called Ocean Mysteries. Some artist and groups like Buck 22 and Loudbox Ent, I work as a studio guitarist alongside with artist development. I got a chance to teach guitar lessons to some really cool Hollywood actors as well. Recently I played acoustic and electric guitar on a two-week national subnioz records tour with Jim Perkins-produced artist Sozay. Also, I’ve been real busy playing out with my own band called JayaR which consists of all pro musicians, including members of Shania Twain and Musicians Institute staff and fronted by a celebrity private chef. This is what I do for a passion project.

What was your favorite gig?
It’s a hard question, seeing that I just love playing so much. I’ve never thought about which was one was my favorite experience. I will say that I really love playing unconventional gigs like in college towns. It’s a standard to be on a lighted stage in front of an energetic crowd no doubt but I really love being part of an experience. One gig I’ll always remember was in Isla Vista, CA, which is the college town of UCSB in Santa Barbara. We were asked to play at a house party with JayaR and set up in the garage of this huge 5-bedroom house that was shared by a bunch of students. As we started playing, packs and packs of local party animals roamed the streets dancing wherever they could plant their feet and wheeling beer kegs around on skateboards. It was awesome because everyone’s response to us was ” Whoa… theres a band playing over there, and they’re killing it!” Those types of adventures are always the most fun because we get to party as well ha ha ha ha.

What instruments do you play? Did you have formal training/where?
I play guitar and a little bit of drums. I started playing guitar when I was 8 and had many different private teachers, still do actually. But after attending music production based classes at Columbia College Chicago I moved out to Hollywood to study at Musicians Institute and grab a degree in Guitar Performance. Prior to that I had been a full time musician back in Chicago, so I got a lot of my experience playing on stages at clubs and venues and haven’t stopped since.

Do you teach music too?
I do. I have many private students but also teach at the school of dance and music in Hermosa Beach, Redondo beach and Manhattan beach during the week.

What advice would you give a musician just starting out?
Play often and play everything. Every music playing experience is a learning experience.

Do you have any songs on iTunes?
Yes, JayaR has 2 EPs one studio and one live on iTunes and Spotify. Also, there are some free downloads to some of our latest singles if you stop by our website on our soundcloud. www.jayarmusic.com

Vault CrossFit Comes to North Hollywood

What is CrossFit and how can it help me? We get the answers from North Hollywood’s Vault CrossFit

Vault CrossFit www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The NoHo Arts District dot come team likes to spotlight the many unique businesses that make their home in the NoHo arts community. So let’s give a big North Hollywood welcome to Chanida Sintuu, the owner of Vault CrossFit and get to know more about this type of work out.

What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that combines elements of endurance, Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics. It’s aim is to forge an elite as well as inclusive fitness. We provide a motivating community amongst coaches and your fellow athletes who come to make health and fitness a priority in their lifestyles.

What are the benefits of CrossFit?
If you’re the type of person who moseys into a gym, does a round of bench presses, chats it up and then eases your way through a light workout, then CrossFit is going to be a serious wake up call. CrossFit is a concentrated way of exercising and it burns the system in a good way. You will go balls to the walls and reach your goals faster. Effort is key in CrossFit. Many actors and dancers use CrossFit to prepare for their demanding roles and tours.

What makes CrossFit unique?
You will beat workout boredom. Period. Plus you start making friends with people that are here with us all week which is hard in L.A.

Vault CrossFit North Hollywood www.nohoartsdistrict.com

How good is CrossFit for losing weight and keeping it off?
The fast paced repetitions and the constant movement puts your body into extreme workout mode so you will see results quickly. It is straight up efficiency.

Do I have to be in shape to start CrossFit?
Not at all!! This is the most common reason people give for waiting to try something that seems so intimidating like CrossFit. That’s like asking someone to immediately start swimming prior to any lessons! The unknown is always intimidating, but you must start somewherr and the hardest step is making the commitment to yourself to begin your CrossFit journey. Our workouts are tailored for the beginners to the elite athletes.

What made you locate to NoHo?

I chose the NoHo Arts District as Vault’s home because of the talent and drive of the neighborhood. This place has grown and developed at lightening speed due to the strong knit community here. It’s been quite an experience to witness. I was drawn to that youthful energy and wanted to contribute by offering a way for our neighbors to continue to better their lives as a whole and CrossFit is that vehicle.

Anything else you would like to add?
We have showers at our facility and we offer towel service for your convenience! We also offer other classes to compliment your CrossFit training such as yoga, kickboxing and dynamics (high intensity interval training). Ask about student, first responder, and group/corporate discounts!

In honor of the show’s 40th anniversary, which is traditionally represented by a ruby gemstone, the event will feature a “ruby” theme. Professional jewelry artists, glass artists, and painters who regularly work with this stone or color will contribute to the artSHOW’s 40th anniversary darkly rosy theme.

“In its 40 years, the show has attracted thousands of popular, stylish artists, and enthusiasts from around the world to the City’s business district and surrounding community,” says Steve Zoet, Beverly Hills Community Services Director. In honor of the City of Beverly Hill’s Centennial anniversary, painters with great skill in the fine art of rendering water will gather around the newly rebuilt, century old Lily Pond, to demonstrate their technique and their work.

WHEN: Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, 2014 10AM-6PM
WHERE: Beverly Gardens Park – located along Santa Monica Blvd., from Rodeo Drive to Rexford Drive. Convenient, inexpensive parking is available during the artSHOW directly across from the show grounds.

The Los Angeles Art Association, a non-profit association and gallery dedicated to furthering the careers of Los Angeles area artists will present two contemporary artists, new to the Beverly Hills artSHOW on May 17 and 18. Annie Terrazzo works with two-dimensional found objects and Nicholas S. Coroneos with more traditional painting and sculpture materials, occasionally using non-traditional items. Both artists use humor and word play to disturbing, surprising effect. Visitors will find their display across from the newly restored Lily Pond, just south of the famous Beverly Hills sign.

Nicholas Coroneos began his fine art career as a prolific painter, and has more recently produced a large body of work featuring sly bronze sculptures, which will be showcased at the event. Originally from Frankfurt, Germany, he studied advertising design and worked as a draftsman for an engineering firm while simultaneously pursuing his education in art and art history.

Annie Terrazzo’s wit begins with her biography, which states, “There is great beauty to be found. Sometimes you have to go through the trash to find it.” After Annie graduated from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, she began her career in “trash portraiture”, mostly focusing on found objects, newspapers, and magazines. She creates artwork that the viewer can both see and read. Annie grew up in Breckenridge Colorado, where she spent most of her time writing plays on a 1970’s typewriter while watching old movies and dreaming of Paris.

Pet District – The ASPCA is Los Angeles’ Newest Super Hero!

pet

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is here in Los Angeles, and we welcome them with open arms! This week the ASPCA launched a $25 million animal rescue campaign in an ambitious effort to save thousands of stray animals and pets from shelters that euthanize.

aspca

Not only that, the multi-year project has 5 key programs that will work closely with leading local animal warfare groups. One of the ventures is a free spay and neuter clinic in South Los Angeles. The entire project should last about five years, but we welcome them to stay as long as they please! This is one of the ASPCA’s most expensive projects, and we are so happy to see it launch in our beloved city, where our animals need SO much of our help! Bravo, and thank you, ASPCA!

Independent Filmmaking – No Limits for Filmmakers

fontana

Making a film should be, in my humble opinion at least, as daring and as bold and as seemingly impossible as trying to catch lightning in a bottle. And when done right, the results are just as beautiful as what I would imagine lightning would look like, captured and bottled. But as difficult as that might seem, and I am no physicist…I’m pretty sure catching lightening is actually impossible. What I am really reaching for is the concept of setting your expectations really, really high and to not be afraid of that.

Why bother making something at all if it doesn’t scare the pants off you a bit!

If you have something buzzing around in your head, something that keeps you up at night, and haunts your dreams when you do eventually drop off, then that is exactly what is worth all your time and effort.

Just because you have no money and possibly very little expertise, this doesn’t mean you cant aspire to something beyond your reach…well, actually it means exactly that…

Being bold of course doesn’t mean you should try to make something completely unattainable, like, um, I’m actually having a little trouble thinking of something unattainable right now…

I suppose that a massive space battle between loads of space ships might be a bit difficult to do with no money, but honestly, unless you are thinking of comparing your CGI to Avatar, you could even make a film entirely set in space. It would just be more like first generation Battle Star Galactica than Gravity.

But it is your film!
Your story!
Your world!

So, if you wanted your alien planet to look like say, North Hollywood and could explain it, perhaps by inventing a parallel universe warp in the space time continuum clause, or something, then go ahead!
I’ve certainly seen several aliens walking about in broad daylight in Noho, and I don’t mean undocumented New Zealand bartenders!

The point is to make it something that burns within you. After all, you could save all the effects or makeup or set building etc for just one grand final scene, glorifying the entire film.

One film I saw a couple of years ago did just that, although it wasn’t exactly a zero budget film, but it was completely independent.
The film in question, ’Safety Not Guaranteed’, was a comedy made in 2012 based on an actual ad posted by bored employees in a local paper. They asked for someone to accompany them back in time, hence the title of the film. Its really about the two main characters and the locations are a motel, a house, a beach, and thats about it really. So when you get to the final scene, the money shot if you will, it’s a real payoff because nothing you have seen up to that point in the film would lead you to expect the kind of science fiction, beautiful effect shot ending.
Sorry if I spoiled it for you, but it really is worth seeing, an excellent and inspiring film.

I think the reason I am writing about this is to repeat over and over to you, and indeed to myself, that we really are limited only by our own imaginations, even in the world of very, very independent film. Because really, when you look at it, these brilliant moments that we capture on film really should be brilliant. They should be the absolute best things we can do, the absolute best of us, because, in the end, that is all we have to give.

Our film, our art.

So, just like the very best part of the pie, which for me is either the first part or the last part. I never can decide. What we create from the very best of ourselves is our very best creation.
Even with no budget and nothing but hope and a handbag is ours and our alone which I think is the point of all art in the end…to be ourselves.

So dream it all up and pick up a camera and go out there and film it, starships hung with string and wobbly sets and all.

And don’t worry, it will be brilliant because it’s you…

North Hollywood’s Candlelight Vigil is May 13

Honoring our fallen police officers on May 13

Candlelight Vigil North Hollywood Police Department www.nohoartsdistrict.comChris Cortijo, 51, was stopped at a traffic light around 5:30 p.m. earlier this month at the intersection of Saticoy Street and Lankershim Boulevard in Sun Valley when an SUV hit him and pinned him between two vehicles. Chris Cortijo worked in the LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division and arrested more than 3,000 DUI suspects over his 26-year career. He was also a former Marine. Chris Cortijo was assigned to the Valley Traffic Division and is one of nine fallen police officers in Los Angeles. In 2008, the North Hollywood Police Department lost Spree Desha, End Of Watch date: 9/12/2008. She was assigned to North Hollywood, specifically.

I received information from Lea Rookwood who contacted me about the Candlelight Vigil that will be taking place on May 13, 2014. I asked Lea why she decided to coordinate this event. “I dedicate my time and effort to honor those that so selflessly fight to protect us,” said Lea. She has been an active member of LAPD’s CPAB and PALS for a long time but decided to create the United By Light Candlelight Vigil on her own. Please take a moment to read the below announcement. The NoHo Arts District has one of the lowest crime rates in the City of Los Angeles. Why? Because of our dedicated, brave police officers. Let’s gather the NoHo arts community for this very special event and if you can’t make it, a donation will be very much appreciated.

Today in the United States, some 900,000 law enforcement officers put their lives on the line for the safety and protection of others. That protection comes at a price, however. Each year, there are approximately 60,000 assaults on law enforcement officers and over the last decade, an average of 160 officers a year have been killed in the line of duty.

Each spring, thousands join together in Washington, DC at the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial to pay tribute to the law enforcement professionals who serve today and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of public safety.

Candlelight Vigil North Hollywood Police Department www.nohoartsdistrict.com

While not everyone can join in person, you can still help honor the service of our federal, state, and local law enforcement officers by supporting or joining the Vigil viewing event at the North Hollywood Police Department on May 13th, 2014 at 8:00pm. There will be a special dedication to honor our recently fallen officer, Christopher Cortijo. Lea has committed to raising $1,000.00 to support the memorial, and they are currently at 30% of my goal. You can donate to this worthwhile cause here: http://support.nleomf.org/goto/NorthHollywood

Interior Design – Wainscoting; to trim or not to trim.

Many times we are in a space that is void of any type of character or architectural flair. Oftentimes, it may seem to be a costly endeavor to add such details. One way to add interest is to use architectural moldings or in this case; wainscoting. This is a relatively easy and cost effective way to add flair and/or interest to any room. It can be as simple as adding trim molding and then paint the middle section or to add additional panels as well.

But first what exactly is wainscoting? It’s the paneling that is added to the lower part of the wall. The three main types are beadboard, plywood panels or decorative panels, which you can find on any door.

The average height is 30” to 36” high, but can really be a personal preference. You might have seen in a few homes that are fairly formal, the wainscoting can actually be about ¾ up the wall. But for our purposes today, we’ll use the average height.

1. First remove all baseboards and faceplates. Use a utility knife to loosen and then a pry bar to remove baseboards. Pay special attention to not harm the drywall when removing or you might need to replace.
2. Determine the height. Measure from the floor up to the desired height. Also measure the width of the wall to have the correct amount of panels needed. You will need to add plywood panels or beadboard at this stage. Use a stud finder to attach panels to the wall.
3. Once all is installed and you are satisfied, you may then add the baseboards and the chair rail to the top of your wainscoting material. Paint to match.

If you don’t want to add the beadboard, etc. to the wall, you can simply add the chair rail molding and paint the wall above the baseboard and below the chair rails. Or you can also add moldings in between for of a 3-D look. Paint all the same color to achieve a uniform look. If you’d like to be a bit daring, use more than one color for depth, interest and pizzazz.

Rescuing the Mission

We turn to our neighbors to help rescue our local rescue mission – #rescuethemission

San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission www.nohoartsdistrict.com

A fire destroyed the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission’s emergency shelter, vehicle fleet, clothing warehouse and food pantry on May 3. It displaced dozens of people and decimated months of donated items meant for Valley families. Cash donations and in-kind contributions are urgently needed to restore what was lost in the fire. This is a North Hollywood institution that has helped East Valley and L.A. families alike. The NoHo Arts District community can help.

“The Rescue Mission gives so much to our community by helping families in need get food, shelter and clothing across the Valley,” said City Councilmember Paul Krekorian. “Now, because of this terrible fire, the Mission needs our help. That’s why City Councilmembers, community organizations and corporate partners are launching a campaign to ‘Rescue the Mission’ and urging all Angelenos to join us. If we come together, we can overcome this tragedy.”

San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission www.nohoartsdistrict.com

“The devastating fire that tore through the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission was a tragic event that has impacted thousands of lives,” said Wade Trimmer, Executive Director of the SFV Rescue Mission. “The silver lining of this disaster is the outpouring of support and commitment from individuals, companies, and our elected officials, as evidenced by the seven L.A. City Councilmembers who have come together to shed light on our situation.”

How to figure out what your ideal fitness and health environment looks like.

exercisegroupclass

In today’s health and fitness world of online groupon deals, smartphone apps, trendy fitness products, and danger and adventure filled marathons and run-walks, there’s so much to choose from to get in shape and stay active. That’s a great thing. However, it might be a time to step back and determine ultimately what your ideal fitness and wellness environment should be to keep you motivated long-term and reaching your goals and staying fit for life.

I’d suggest understanding the 4 basic core behavior styles we are all comprised of by using the DISC method, which is one of the many tools used to measure a person’s unique style. Determine which style represents you the most (some people have a couple that they are most prominent in, but today we’ll just focus on the strongest), and then match that to your ideal environments.

The DISC core styles are:
D” stands for “Dominance”. It’s how a person responds to problems and challenges. This is a person who is assertive and direct, competitive, likes results, and getting to the point quick. Is this you?
I” stands for “Influence”. It’s how a person influences others to their point of view. This is a person who is friendly, outgoing, people oriented, excited and talkative. Is this you?
S” stands for “Steadiness”. It’s how a person handles a steady pace. This is a person who is easy going, steady, reserved, non emotional, and loyal. Is this you?
C” stands for “Compliance”. It’s how a person responds to procedures and rules set by others. This is a person who is very precise, fact oriented, analytical, and a perfectionist. Is this you?
Still not exactly sure yet what style you are? .

First, choose whether you are an “EXTROVERT” or “INTROVERT”. This will separate the “D” & “I” styles from the “S” and “C” styles in that order.
If you are more of an “EXTROVERT”, next decide if you are “MORE COMPETITIVE and DIRECTING”, or “MORE TALKATIVE and INTERACTIVE”. This will let you know if you are a “D” or an “I” in that order.
If you are more of an “INTROVERT”, next decide if you are “MORE ACCEPTING and DOING”, or “MORE ASSESSING and THINKING”. This will let you know if you are an “S” or “C” in that order.

Here’s some basic NUTRITION, FITNESS, and LIFESTYLE trends for each style:
“D”- You are very competitive and must place yourself in a fitness environment that allows for competition to stay motivated. You have a tendency to skip breakfast, eat quick meals on the go, and eat fatty dinners. Be aware of this and make adjustments in your nutrition and diet by setting goals and tracking your food intake. When you are stressed you might get constricted arteries and clench your teeth. For recovery, do a lot of deep breathing exercises and quiet your mind. For relaxing do moderate physical activity.

“I”-You are a very sociable person and always optimistic and friendly and should place yourself in a group environment that allows for you to stay motivated. You have a tendency to overeat in social occasions out with friends and at events and functions. Be aware of this and make adjustments in your nutrition and diet during those times. When stressed, you might get heart palpitations. For recovery, do some mindfulness meditation. For relaxing, chat with a friend.

“S”-You are a non emotional, conforming team player who doesn’t like change and should place yourself in a repetitive and slow changing type environment to stay motivated. You can be a very emotional eater. Be aware of this and make adjustments in your nutrition and diet by understanding what triggers your emotional eating. When stressed you might get stomach issues. For recovery, do some mindfulness meditation. Relax by reading and taking a long bath.

“C”-You are precise, detail oriented, skeptical and fearful and need to place yourself in an environment that allows for a detailed plan of action with follow-up. You have a tendency to measure out your food portions Be aware of this and make adjustments in your nutrition and diet by loosening up with your portions every now and then when eating. When stressed you might get headaches and constricted arteries. For recovery, do a lot of deep breathing exercises and chanting. Relax by having good quality alone time.

Dance – Leap of Faith into a Dream Come True – An Interview with NYC-based dancer Kristi Tornga

PHOTO 1 kristi.tornga.headshot

Kristi Tornga is a friend and colleague of mine from CalArts. She is an exceptionally talented artist, and it has been incredible to watch her professional progression. She left LA for the Big Apple in 2010, and realized her dreams by dancing with the Paul Taylor Dance Company this season, including performances at the infamous Lincoln Center. Kristi shares her experience as a modern dancer in NYC with NoHoArtsDistrict.com, providing a behind-the-scenes look at the contemporary dance side of the coin and what’s helped her along the way.

Kristi Tornga grew up in the woods of Northern Michigan. She received her early training at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan before earning her BFA in dance and choreography at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Since moving to New York in 2010, she has performed for Jessica Gaynor Dance, Mazzini Dance Collective, TAKE Dance Company and the Paul Taylor Dance Company.

Are you staying within contemporary and modern dance companies for work, or branching into other styles of dance? How necessary is it to also be able to act and sing?
I have made the decision to stay within contemporary and modern dance companies for work. I think that ultimately this is a very personal decision that only you can make for yourself. I don’t think it’s wrong to branch into other styles of dance, but it’s all about what makes you happy. I would not be happy working on a cruise ship or dancing and singing on Broadway… these are wonderful, admirable careers, but it’s just not what I want. I do not need to be able to sing in order to dance with the companies that I find thrilling in the concert modern dance world. This is a relief because I’m a horrible singer! I am finding however that acting can be very important. The subtleties of developing a character through movement or finding just the right comedic timing for a gesture are aspects of acting that I am working on at the moment. It’s necessary to know what type of career that you want within the vast world of dance; there are so many facets and different ways to exist as a dancer that ultimately you need to define what your experience will be. I have had to learn to say no to certain opportunities while still being open and receptive to whatever may come next for me.

Are you seeking representation to assist you with finding auditions? What agency/agencies would be best for your style of dance?
I am not currently working with any agents to help me find dance auditions or land a gig. I have had a very interesting professional experience so far in that I have never been hired from an audition. I’ve received all of my dance jobs through workshops, classes, word of mouth recommendations, and lots of hard work and luck. I don’t know that any of my peers and colleagues in the concert modern dance world are using, or have used, agents to obtain work. I’ve learned that being plucked from amidst hundreds of dancers at a cattle call audition is a bit of a fantasy. It seems that most often, a company or choreographer will hire someone who they have experience with. If you want to dance for a certain choreographer then take their classes, find out if they’re are offering a workshop, offer to help out during their performances, and let them know how much your love their work. You can often be the best representation for yourself by proving that your work ethic, personality, and dancing are worth investing in.

Where are you continuing your training? Are you only dancing or are you cross-training? Why is that important?
The most important part of being a dancer is taking dance class! I make sure to take class at least 4 or 5 times per week. For me this can be a ballet, modern, or a contemporary class. I mostly train at the Taylor School, but Gibney Dance and Steps on Broadway both have a great line-up of ballet classes and contemporary artists. I often look for workshops or master classes that are being taught by choreographers whose work I admire. I love trying out different styles and ways of moving. I like to keep it fresh, and the same goes for my cross-training schedule. Since dance classes and rehearsals tend to be anaerobic activities I make sure to do cardiovascular workouts to maintain my stamina for performances. I love going for a run, or taking a spin class at SoulCycle or Flywheel. I used to hate this type of endurance workout, but I’ve grown to cherish the “runner’s high” and rush of endorphins that accompany the challenge. I also take Pilates in a semi-private group setting; this time to focus on core strength and muscular imbalances has become a very beneficial form of injury prevention for me. Basically, when it comes to working out I will try anything at least once! Yoga, barre classes, Pilates, running, spinning, cross-fit… I listen to what my body needs and I almost always enlist a friend to work out with me… sweating alone is no fun!

Describe a little bit about your recent role with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. What was your daily life while under contract?
Recently I had the opportunity to dance with the Paul Taylor Dance Company. I initially fell in love with the Taylor style when I was a young high school student at Interlochen Arts Academy. The legendary Taylor Dancer, Ruth Andrien, came and taught as a guest artist for 6 weeks during my sophomore year and I knew almost immediately that I wanted to dance for this company. So when I was asked this past autumn to fill in for a 6-month period while a dancer was out with an injury, it was literally a dream come true.

My life as a company member began with daily technique class at the Paul Taylor dance studios every morning. After a quick lunch break I would dive into rehearsals for the rest of the afternoon. If I wasn’t in the main studio running one of the many dances, then I was in the second studio looking at performance footage on DVD players; watching certain sections in slow motion to study the intricate footwork, or comparing different uses of musicality throughout the many generations of Taylor dancers. I rehearsed not only the roles I was cast in, but also the many understudy roles that I was responsible for.

PHOTO 6 PTDCrehearsal.Francisco.Graciano

What did you learn?
The greatest thing I learned while dancing with the PTDC was confidence. The dancers in the company are such fabulous artists that it was initially hard not to be intimidated by their skill and experience. They really took me under their wing and showed me by example how important it is to take risks in rehearsal and on stage. I learned to dance bigger than myself and to allow myself to become the movement without being shy or embarrassed about how it might look. In order for me to grow as a dancer, I had to transform the nervous and scared energy into excitement and certainty.

What had you expected about the experience and what was a real surprise? Could you have prepared for that, or wished you had known anything before?
Most everything about dancing for the Paul Taylor Dance Company was what I dreamt it would be like. I loved dancing in the studios all day long, and obviously touring and performing in different cities was so much fun. The biggest surprise to me was how quickly everyone works. I was shocked at how much detail the dancers could pick up by simply watching a video of the movement. The very first rehearsal of a piece would look like everyone had done a performance because of how much “homework” had been done beforehand.

I don’t think that I could have prepared any differently to dance with the company. In a way, my greatest preparation was the three years prior that I had spent as a student of the Taylor School. By attending the daily professional level class I was learning not only the steps and exercises, but the style was becoming ingrained in my body in a way that allowed me to quickly absorb the movement and learn the dances. Without having studied at the Taylor School, I would not have been able to successfully dance with the company.

PHOTO 7 PTDC.LincolnCenter
Paul Taylor Dance Company at Lincoln Center. Kristi is second from the right

What was it like for you to perform at Lincoln Center?
Performing at Lincoln Center was unreal! The very first day that we got into the theater I walked onto the stage and felt every nerve in my body come to life. After seeing so many wonderful performances as an audience member of the Koch Theater it was great to be on the other side of the curtain. I loved every minute of the three week New York Season; the rehearsals, the performances, the Gala, the parties…it was truly a fairytale.

What are your goals? Are you going to stay in NYC for a while or are you taking auditions nationally?
I plan on staying in NYC for quite some time. It is my hope that I will get the opportunity to dance with the Paul Taylor Dance Company again someday, but in the meantime I am dancing for other wonderful choreographers who reside in NYC. It seems that most people who live in New York City, myself included, have a love/hate relationship with their surroundings. Some days I just wish I could take up more space or drive to the grocery store in a car, but then I realize that I really don’t want to live anywhere else. The choreographers and dancers who compel me to become a better dance artist are all around me, so I’m staying.

PHOTO 8 JessicaGaynorDance.TriselionArts.Sam.Polcer

What advice do you have for concert dancers wanting to go to NYC? (or even just considering leaving LA?)
If you want to move to NYC, or anywhere, my advice is to take the leap of faith and do it. We can plan, and save money, and still nothing will prepare us for the wild pursuit of chasing a dream. I spent four years in the Los Angeles area while I was earning my BFA in dance at CalArts, but I never really entertained the idea of staying on the west coast. My friends who remain in LA have found wonderful ways to combine a concert and commercial career to create a lifestyle for themselves. I knew that the company I want to dance for is based out of New York, so I bought a one-way plane ticket and figured the rest out along the way. Follow the direction of the work that you want to be doing. No decision is irreversible, if you move somewhere and you don’t like it, you can always move back.

Thank you Kristi!

The making of a musical in NoHo

Making of a new old-fashion musical. THE GROUP REP to Premiere New Musical THE GHOST OF GERSHWIN

The Ghost of Gershwin musical at The Group Rep www.nohoartsdistrict.com

THE GHOST OF GERSHWIN, a new old-fashioned musical, will open Friday, May 9th at the Lonny Chapman Theatre located on the edge of the NoHo Arts District.

Based on an original idea by Wayland Pickard, book by Doug Haverty, music by Pickard, lyrics by Pickard and Laura Manning, with additional lyrics by Haverty, this world premiere musical boasts all new music in the style of George and Ira Gershwin.

The show is directed by theatre veteran Jules Aaron and choreographed by Michele Bernath. Richard Alan Woody and Leah Shaw produce on behalf of GRT.

When asked how he got the idea for the musical Wayland Pickard said, “I have always been a fan of both history and ghost stories, so it seemed like a perfect match! I’ve been an ardent student of George Gershwin’s music for years and had always wondered what he might have written had he lived longer. The fact that Gershwin died suddenly at 38 seems unfair to the world. Gershwin had just started to peak as a composer. I had to wonder how fun it would be if his spirit came back. Now, in this instance, George Gershwin’s reason for coming back is to provide guidance to a young composer about how to best to live life.”

As the final show in the Group Rep’s 40th Anniversary season, it is a true collaborative effort that showcases the company’s depth of talent. GRT’s co-artistic director, Larry Eisenberg brought the musical to Jules Aaron, who was charmed by Wayland Pickard’s music and thought that Doug Haverty was the perfect choice to write the book.

For a sampling of the music, please view the YouTube music video

{youtube}XSifI6PIWeA{/youtube}

Doug Haverty has known Wayland for years but had never worked with him. Haverty agreed to take on the project with the stipulation that he would start from scratch using Pickard’s concept: George Gershwin’s ghost is called back from the dead to help a young composer, Grant, learn to live his life more fully and to inspire him to write the lyrics for his “Gershwin infused” melodies. He built the story around the music. “In essence,” said Haverty, “I was creating a jukebox musical, treating the existing new songs as hits.” In the course of writing, four more songs were written as well as a new instrumental number.

Aaron has really enjoyed being part of the process. “Doug has fashioned a book around the songs and set the play in a show business apartment in Brooklyn, where different artists drop in and out, much like the charming musicals of the 1930s. There are colorful characters, a love triangle and there is song and dance (courtesy of choreographer Michele Bernath and assistant musical director Paul Cady), including tap, rumba, jitterbug, dancing ala Fred and Ginger. It’s five drafts later, and as with any new musical, we’re still fine tuning.”

That fine tuning is made easier because of the talents of the cast, which includes Jean Altadel, Emma-Jayne Appleyard, Kyle Bares, Andrew Bourgeois, Gregory Guy Gorden, Daniel Lench, and Suzy London.

“We’re thrilled to have this show be seen,” says Aaron. “The Ghost of Gershwin is a chance to bring audiences an old-fashioned musical that’s charming, tuneful and touching. After all, don’t we all need to learn how to live our lives fully and treasure each moment?”

The Ghost of Gershwin opens Friday, May 9th at 8pm, and runs Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, with Sunday matinees at 2pm, through June 22, 2014.

General admission tickets are $22, with discounts for Seniors/Students: $17 and Groups of 10 or more: $15.

He’s Your Gay Media Guru – Meet Entrepreneur Damian Pelliccione

IMG 4170

When the great Aristotle said, “Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work,” he clearly had Damian Pelliccione in mind. An educator, event planner, producer, actor, host and self-professed nerd, Damian has turned his love of all things media into a full-fledged empire- spending his free time soaking up as much tech news as possible on websites like Tubefilter and Gizmodo.com while the rest of us nap in front of our flatscreens. And with drones and self-driving cars leaping off the pages of science fiction novels and into our driveways, getting interested in technology might not be such a bad idea. “When I hear about things like how Facebook is creating 50 new ways to identify your gender, that really excites me, and I have to tell everybody,” he says during our interview.

Yes, for those more interested in napping as opposed to being present, Damian has made himself more than available for your tech needs, with his New Media Marketing course at Columbia College Chicago, his WebTV Workshop course that he’s turning into a video series, and his Boys in Tech web series- which has had an audience upwards of 100,000 viewers. And those are just his day jobs.

At night, he hosts his monthly entertainment and technology social mixer New Media Vault, housed at the W Hotel in Hollywood, where we first became acquainted over cocktails. That night, he was poised with the perfect mix of charisma, charm and humility, which would explain why 200-300 writers, directors, actors and techies consistently flock to his event every month. To put it simply, Damian Pelliccione is inspiring, and he’s actually taken that trait and made it his brand.

So, naturally, I was elated that evening when he agreed to this interview after having just met me. A nothing-to-lose scenario, you might say, but I’d like to think it was because I left him with a little inspiration as well.

Passion as a Lifestyle

Right now, Damian is in pre-production on his second pilot this year. The half docu-series, half remodeling show Little Trailer House, which he’s producing with his fiancé Chris Rodriguez, focuses on two women, both over the age of 60, as they go “glamping” around the country. “‘Glamping’ is a new term that means glamorous camping,” he explains. “And they’ll be taking trailers to these really cool trailer parks and camp grounds that most people have never heard of, and they’re like five-star spas and resorts for trailers.”

IMG 4350

The pilot will be shot in Montana where Damian will be traveling to in mid-May. Specifically, he and the show will be highlighting the town of Miles City where the 64th anniversary of Bucking Horse Sale, the world-famous rodeo, will be taking place May 15th through the 18th. “So we’re starting in Billings, Montana and following these two lovely ladies as the ‘glamp’ up their trailer, and then we’ll be highlighting the famous KOA campgrounds in Miles City,” he says. “And it’s really super exciting because these ladies have so much personality, and this project is definitely one of my favorite things.”

And this is all on the heels of another project that Damian just finished directing called Beyond Face, a docu-series revolving around an esteemed doctor/life coach as he develops methods for helping at-risk young people achieve their dreams. “We mainly focused on one person in particular named Jordan, and she had a really troubled past, but she’s come full circle to becoming a fitness model and a hair stylist,” he explains. “And that’s been really exciting for her, and it’s been a really rewarding project to direct.”

But the thing that Damian is most excited about is the upcoming season 2 of his gay techie-themed creation Boys in Tech, the noted 15-minute web-series, hosted by Damian, and covering all-things media-related with a technological slant. Damian’s promise to his viewers is that they be educated while also being entertained and inspired, and he’s fulfilled on this many times over with guests like Christopher Ciccone, the acclaimed music video director, Jeff Davis, creator of Teen Wolf on MTV, and J.C. Lee and the writing staff of HBO’s Looking. And while Damian always concludes the show with the interviews, he begins the show by endorsing those products that are in alignment with his vision to the gay community; therefore creating the opportunity for sponsors and like-minded organizations to cross-promote and publicize their products to the Boys in Tech audience as well. “I’m most proud of Boys In Tech because it’s a brand that I’ve lived with for four years before I figured out what it really was,” he explains. “I was inspired by Girls In Tech, which is a national organization for women in technology, and they used to be a community sponsor for New Media Vault. And I really liked the idea of creating a gay version of it where we could have mixers for gay guys in technology.”

Damian coordinated a few of those mixers, inviting gay friends of his to speak on panels, but at that time in 2010, such an event focusing that heavily on technology wasn’t the big ticket item it is today. But he didn’t give up and continued tweaking the concept until he was approached by Susan Wrenn, founder of theStream.tv and emPOWERme.tv just this past fall- asking him to turn his event concept into a concept for a web-series. “Hosting is definitely a passion of mine, but at the time, I was thinking, ‘What’s my brand?’ And I knew I was gay, and I always geeked out on anything tech-related. So I combined the two and created this 15-minute internet talk show that focuses on gays, gadgets and gizmos, and I am your gay media guru.
With his contract with emPOWERme.tv having run its course, Damian is working with a new company that will allow him to move forward with season 2, and it will be an opportunity for him to step up his game even more.

Passion Extended to Others

One place where Damian needn’t be concerned about his game is in the area of teaching. He first started teaching in a non-professional setting with his old business partner in their WebTV Workshop course, where they taught students of all levels the ins and outs of creating their own successful web series. The reputation of the course traveled quickly, and word eventually made it back to several universities, including Loyola Marymount, USC and Columbia College Chicago, all of which asked Damian to come and lecture. And he had spoken at Columbia College Chicago for almost four years before they finally extended an offer to bring him on board as an adjunct professor.
“I was honored and really excited, and I jumped at the opportunity. “And, of course, the class focused on new media marketing because that’s my specialty,” he comments. “I had 12 students, all girls and one boy, and I got to take them through what it really means to market content and have great messaging and great relationships and partnerships with organizations and brands to push video content. And they were really excited because they’re all in their early 20’s and already, they know social media better than I do in the sense that I was learning from them.”

boys-tech

One of Damian’s teaching methods, much like with Boys in Tech, was to bring in guest speakers like Shira Lazar from the daily interactive television show What’s Trending and music producer DJ Poet. “And here’s someone in music who has used media and technology to further his career also as an entrepreneur, and now endorses and creates products, and he works with companies like Google and Adobe,” Damian comments. “And it’s super exciting because these are people who started off just like my students and really put themselves out there and created an amazing world through the use of social media and new media marketing, and these kids really get into it.”
During the course, Damian assigned his students with the task of going to several networking events, and he’s even been able to secure a few of them internships. “The biggest life lesson that I share with all of my students, friends and colleagues is that building a relationship with someone in this business is the most important thing you can do,” he says. “You never know where a relationship or a contact will end up. You never know what door they might be able to open for you and where that connection can take you. So it’s super important to be humble no matter how big or how small you think you are. And it’s one of the reasons why I host my event New Media Vault.”

Passion + Contribution

New Media Vault is the answer to Damian’s deep need to give back while leaving people empowered at the same time. Several years ago, before becoming our gay media guru, Damian started out in the restaurant and bar industry, waiting tables and mixing drinks. He eventually moved into marketing and event planning for a few gay bars in Los Angeles, a likely progression for someone surrounded by hosts and event planners. But with the entrepreneurial spirit he inherited from his business-owner father burning inside, he knew he couldn’t settle for anything typical. “I left the event marketing world in 2009, and I knew I needed to meet people and further build my network, so the first thing you do in that situation is go to networking events and hand out as many business cards as possible,” he says.

And in 2009, the office building he was renting with friends cleared a space in the basement big enough for events. And that was all the incentive Damian needed to create his own business, a networking event focused on content creators for the web. That was February of 2009, and 150 people showed up to his first mixer. Today, New Media Vault has 300-400 attendees monthly, 20 sponsors, a red carpet and press. Their social media following for the event alone is at the 100,000 mark. And their social network NewMediaVault.com, which is open and free to the public, has over 15,000 followers, and any one of them can use the network to promote their products, services or web-series.

“I’ve had people come up to me and tell me that they found a new job at New Media Vault,” he says, “or that they made a connection with a really great actor and got their web series started because of New Media Vault. Some people say they were able to launch their app at our mixer. So it really amazes me the amount of people who have had success stories like that just by making a connection at my event. And that’s really all it is. I’m not doing anything other than facilitating a venue for an audience where they can connect.” Well, in today’s tech driven world where human interaction and connection is becoming more difficult with each setting sun, I would say that a place actually fostering connection is one to be marveled, and so might be the person who created it.

Yes, Damian Pelliccione really is our premier gay media guru, and when you talk to him about Boys in Tech, or his course at Columbia College Chicago, or just his life in general, you really get the sense that inside his promise to leave people inspired, he’s really just having fun.

“Real success for me would be being able to inspire people in a shorter amount of time and with a larger platform. And it’s not that I have to win an Oscar or and Emmy or even a GLAAD Award, I just want to be able to help people create things that inspire them. And if I’m able to do that, then I’m a success.”

Film Festival Flix brings the films to NoHo

No passport required. Film Festival Flix brings the films from festivals around the world right to North Hollywood

Film Festival Flix www.nohoartsdistict.com

Yep. We do film in the NoHo Arts District, too. If you check the NoHo Calendar or drive past Laemmle Theaters, you’ll see many film premieres but you will also see folks with cameras on the streets of North Hollywood making movies. When we met the folks at Film Festival Flix, we had to share with our readers what they bring to the neighborhood, literally and figuratively. Film Festival Flix brings the movies from the film festivals to us here in North Hollywood. Thank you!

So is Film Festival Flix a film festival?
Film Festival Flix has flipped the old distribution model to accommodate changing times and shifting viewer habits. In past years, distributors have used the internet to drive audiences to theaters. Film Festival Flix is using theatrical openings and a monthly nationwide theatrical premiere series to drive audiences to its virtual studio and distribution channels. And it’s working. Film Festival Flix’s monthly theatrical event series offers VIP passes, Q&A’s with filmmakers and social interaction with like-minded cinephiles in the comfort of local towns and cities nationwide.

Why did you choose the NoHo Arts District for your monthly events?
Film Festival Flix has found the most supportive and artistic community we can think of in the NoHo Arts District. We love working with the ultimate indie film house the Laemmle NoHo 7, Michael Roud Photography who hosts our pre-event Cocktail Party and of course The Eclectic – our stellar host for our After-Party.

How does Film Festival Flix help indie filmmakers?
One of our missions is to continue the conversation between filmmakers and their audiences. Film Festival Flix is a distribution platform for indie filmmakers. Each of our films has won awards and gained recognition on the film festival circuit and we are bringing these artists’ work directly to you via theatrical release, online streaming and downloading on multiple platforms: FilmFestivalFlix.com, Amazon, iTunes, Netflix, etc; Cable Video On Demand, DVD sales and beyond. Our artists travel with their films to our live Film Festival Flix events across the country, inviting the true one-to-one connection between a filmmaker and their audience. In the end, many of our social conversations wouldn’t exist without the lens filmmakers provide and we believe in supporting them.”

In the first story, a young woman who has been beaten by her husband is about to file a restraining order, while her husband tries to talk her out of it in fear of career embarrassment. The next story is about a clergyman whose wallet and documents have been stolen and follows him as he tries to get the documents back from the thief. The last story is of an elderly couple alone in a building whose TV has broken and they are afraid of opening the door for the young repairman who has come to help them.

Actors – Are you a success?

My past three blogs have been about the business of being an actor. I’m going to jump forward here and talk briefly about how we define a successful actor. Better yet, what is success? How do you define it?

It’s tough to talk about success in acting. There are many stars who are truly successes; you can read about them in magazines and hear about them on Entertainment Tonight. Is that success? What does it take to be considered a success? Someone may be successful in certain areas, but does that make them a true success? I have a doctor friend who makes a lot of money, and is considered a huge success in his field. But he’s told me many times that he doesn’t see himself as a success in life. I looked up success in a thesaurus and came up with some words: achievement, accomplishment, victory, triumph, winner, sensation. The dictionary defines it as “attainment of goals, wealth, position, honors, or the like.”

As actors, success is relative. If you’re on a series, you’re clearly a success by certain standards. If the series ends after one season, and you are unemployed for six months, are you no longer a success? Are you only a success when you have a job and are working? Many actors define their success by whether they are working on something, or making money. Is that a good measurement? Is that the only measurement?

I have a dear friend who I‘ve known for more than 10 years, who very recently passed away. He was a former student, actor, all around theater and artist gentleman, an excellent electrician, and a dear personal, family friend. I’ve been thinking a lot about him lately, as I miss his physical presence in my life and at The Actors Workout Studio, where he has been involved for so many years, both on and off stage.

paul-respass

His name is Paul Respass, and he was a very talented actor. Some of you reading this know him and may have seen his work. Others never heard of him. Was he a successful actor? Depends who you talk to. To me, he was a huge success. He was a successful man, actor, human, artist, and friend.

This was his journey. He started out with a dream to be an actor. He was nervous, and didn’t know if he “had what it takes” (the subject of an upcoming blog). He believed he had something to share and give to the world. He wanted to express that through the various characters that he wanted to play. He started in my beginners class, was a dedicated student, frightened at first; then got bolder, and into the work he went. He studied diligently, asked a lot of questions, volunteered at theaters doing lights, tech, wanting to make his contribution in as many ways as he could. He was generous and compassionate. Those were qualities he had that he could bring to the good guys and the disturbed guys, which were his signature roles.

He would return to the beginner’s class year after year, because he wanted to help the new, young actors get past their fears, as it was something he understood and for which he had compassion. He continued studying and began doing theater, small parts at first, then larger. He got head shots, resumes, did the business portion, and started getting cast in shorts, independent films, web shows, and more. After several years I remember people calling the theater and asking for “that guy, you know, that Paul guy, I liked him and think he be right for this project. Can I have his number?”

We had a writer’s workshop for several years, and I noticed that the writers were starting to write specifically for Paul. He had a unique quality that told a story, his characters had an emotional life and history that only Paul could convey. I’m not going to cite his resume here, but he worked plenty on stage and on screen. There was one web show in particular, “The NoHo Show” that took place in a small theater in North Hollywood. The part was written for him, and the show won awards. I’ve read great theater reviews about Paul Respass over the years.

So was Paul a success? I guess it depends who you ask. He didn’t make the cover of People magazine or sign a million-dollar movie contract, but to me he was a demonstration of living a successful actor’s life and career. He was loved, respected, inviting, compassionate, and talented. He pursued his dreams and lived his purpose to the fullest. I didn’t see much of him this past year, because it seemed he was working on one project after the other. He did make time to come to our AWS Spring Festival in April to see the other actors and to “help out,” which he always did without being asked. He was a generous artist. To those who knew him, he was a comfort, inspiration, and respected talent.

Paul wanted his work and characters to bring up something in people, to challenge their thinking and perception, to inspire them. Even after he is gone and all I have are his memories, he is still inspiring me. Thank you, Paul for being such a demonstration of what an actor is and can be. You are a success.

Look within. Are you living a successful life? Perhaps you may want to redefine, what is success? So, what is it? What does being successful mean to you?

Movie Review – Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Draft Day; Fading Gigolo

captain-america

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is one of the most satisfying entries in the Marvel superhero series, mainly because it’s an exciting, intelligent, entertaining blend of political thriller and superhero adventure. It would be hard to convey my enthusiasm without spilling key plot elements, but imagine a superhero adventure blended with elements of Three Days of the Condor and The Manchurian Candidate, and you’ll get the idea.

Chris Evans makes a suitably virtuous Captain America, still conflicted about using his powers for the present-day S.H.I.E.L.D, especially when it becomes clear that someone is trying to eliminate director Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson, with a little more to chew on this time around) , as well as anyone loyal to Fury. Everything seems to revolve around a dubious pre-emptive enterprise called Project Insight, and as it turns out, no one can be trusted, and nothing is what it seems. For instance, why does the returning Black Widow (Scarlet Johansson) have a different agenda from Captain America? Who is that attractive next-door neighbor (Emily Van Camp) with all that laundry? Why is the legendary assassin, the so-called Winter Soldier, so intent on destroying Captain America? And where does Robert Redford’s S.H.I.E.L.D. senior official fit in? The really big question is how this will affect Captain America, whose idealistic notions about patriotism and heroism are put to the ultimate test, as he questions whether his life’s work has been all in vain.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has plenty going for it: the action sequences are top-notch, the pacing is good (so much so that you don’t notice the two hours-plus running time), there are some in-joke references to Ironman and the Hulk (enough to wonder where they might be to head off this possible world threat), and the movie contains perhaps Stan Lee’s most amusing appearance yet. In addition, all the actors are on their game: Chris Evans adds some layers to his always noble Captain America persona; the always-fine Anthony Mackie makes a welcome appearance as the captain’s new confidante; Scarlet Johansson makes Natasha a little more human this time around, while Robert Redford trades on his cinematic legacy to become a formidable force in superhero-land, as it becomes a darker world where friendship and loyalty may become things of the past.

kevin
Draft Day – Kevin Costner; Jennifer Garner

You don’t have to be a fan of football to enjoy Draft Day. Anchored by a star turn from Kevin Costner, Draft Day, directed by Ivan Reitman, with a script by Rajiv Joseph and Scott Rothman, succeeds in being a feel-good movie about the NFL draft. Up-against-it Cleveland Browns general manager Sonny Weaver (Costner) is told in no uncertain terms that the team needs to make a splash at the draft, notably by signing a star college quarterback (who comes burdened with some possible off-field issues). Meanwhile Weaver’s girlfriend (Jennifer Garner) is pregnant (a needless distraction in terms of the movie, but there it is), the fans, the athletes, and the voluble and volatile coach (the very funny Dennis Leary) are breathing down his neck, and rival teams are sensing weakness—not to mention Sonny is still trying to get out from the shadow of his late father, a revered coach who Sonny had unceremoniously fired. Draft Day works as well as it does because Costner makes you feel for Sonny, Leary makes a good antagonist (as does Frank Langella as the team’s owner), and the fact that the movie is not just about sports, but about ambition, loyalty, honor, and family. It’s a good return to form for Mr. Reitman too.

woody
Fading Gigolo – Woody Allen; John Turturro

Woody Allen as a pimp? John Turturro as a lothario? Is it possible that any good can come from this? The answer to all of the above is a resounding “yes” with John Turturro’s tasteful, romantic Fading Gigolo. Allen plays Murray, a New York City bookstore owner closing up shop after many years, with Turturro his loyal friend (and part-time employee) Fioravante. When Murray hears that a wealthy, married female acquaintance (Sharon Stone) would love to experience a ménage-a trois (with the third being Sofia Vergara), he suggests a somewhat hesitant Fioravante. Surprisingly, Fioravante proves to be an adept, sensitive gigolo, having been tried out by the lovely Ms. Stone, and Murray proceeds to recommend him to Avigal (Vanessa Paradis) a grieving widow in Williamsburg. Complicating matters is Dovi (Live Schreiber), Avigal’s hesitant admirer (and member of the neighborhood watch) and his jealousy of Avigal and Fioravante’s growing feelings for each other. Allen is funny as Turturro’s pragmatic mentor, and he and Turturro have a wonderful rapport, but the pleasures go even further: Turturro’s bittersweet, surpisingly romantic film captures the yearning and loneliness of characters who have been forced to assume certain roles, either by society’s standards, or by the rigidity of faith and/or tradition. In addition, the actors are uniformly excellent: Sofia Vergara brings restraint and warmth to her role as Stone’s friend (and a willing Fioravante conquest); Vanssa Paradis brings gentle humor and poignancy to her role as the lonely widow who blossoms in the loving hands of Fioravante, while Liev Schreiber is convincing as the lovesruck neighbor who sees himself as Avigal’s protector—and who is not ready to assume the mantle of “the other man.” And if your memories of Turturro are based on Miller’s Crossing and Do the Right Thing, his delicate performance as the reluctant gigolo will make you think of him anew. It’s a lovely performance in a beautiful film.

What do Autism, Aspergers and Art have in common?

April is dedicated to promoting Autism awareness!

What do Autism, Aspergers and Art have in common? Well for one, they all start with the letter “A”. Asperger’s is one of the “syndromes” on the Autism Disorder Spectrum (ADS). Center for Disease Controls reports 1.5 million people in the US are diagnosed with ADS, and one in 68 children.

A sweet disposition, affectionate, pretty and loving child, avid reader, logical, exceptionally bright, an expert in the fields of marine mammals, dinosaurs and Pokémon with sensitivity to sounds, often aloof, who spends free time drawing, describes my granddaughter in grammar school.

Informed by her teacher that my granddaughter; walked in circles, barked like a dog and trotted like a horse was cause to worry. Also reported was that she was seen following an older boy toward the back of school yard. The teacher investigated to learn that the boy had been assigned to escort my granddaughter to her classroom. She was told to follow the boy. Not finding her classroom he continued walking past it. She continued to follow, as told. This surfaced a concern regarding my granddaughter’s safety based on her naiveté.

What does this have to do with Autism Asperger’s and Art? I am getting there.

autism month www.nohoartsdistrict.com

These, and other clues, were emerging indicating that there was something off kilter. Requests were made to the school for an assessment. My granddaughter grades were exceptional; she was not a problem in class. The requests were denied. After expensive private testing, she was diagnosed at age seven with Asperger’s.

With her Asperger’s diagnosis, I mourned the loss of the unspoken dreams and hopes of an ordinary life, for her. Unable to find clear succinct avenues to provide her a normal ordinary life, I was frustrated. With my daughter at the reigns we rallied and persevered.

As time passed her eccentricities became more apparent. Social queues did not register, as though she were walking through the world where everyone shared a secret but her, leaving her confused and dismayed. I watched as her sunshine dimmed. She had settled into a practice of drawing ambidextrously, frequently during conversation.
v In middle school she was never without a sketch pad and pencils sketching incessantly. I refer to this as her Dragon period; she drew dragons in varied positions with intricately detailed wings. Her classmates sought her out requesting her Dragon art. She was finding social acceptance, and making new friends with other young artists.

Autism Month www.nohoartsdistrict.com

High school presented new stresses, social, academic and emotional. The demands of being ordinary, fitting in, were overwhelming. She began shutting down. She had her first “melt downs” crying uncontrollably or quietly scratching herself to the point of drawing blood. To add to her problems she had been banned from using her pads and pencils in the classrooms. An argument was presented and accepted that allowing her to sketch during class as an accommodation to relieve some of her stress. Influenced by teachers, friends and books her artwork advanced.

During her senior year of High School she began attending The Animation Academy. There they focused on animation as a career goal. She passionately immersed herself in all things animation.

Within her life she has: traveled throughout Europe, obtained a purple belt in karate, plays piano and guitar, played soccer, zip lined, snorkels, repelled, swam with dolphins and sting rays, experienced her first crush, kiss and heartbreak, attended two proms, was engaged and broke off an engagement. Her accomplishments and experiences go on.

I had wanted no more for her than to have an ordinary life, but what has manifested is an extraordinary one.

What do Autism, Aspergers and Art have in common? My granddaughter, Caila!

Will she be the next, Bill Gates, Albert Einstein or Thomas Jefferson of the art world? It doesn’t matter.

Today Caila is 19, a college student, studying art with an eye on animation. Her journey has been a challenge, made easier by her love for and involvement with art. For that I am grateful for the gift of art.

NoHo Tours Shows the World Our Arts Community

The world is coming to NoHo? Yep. NoHo Tours provided Chinese hip hop dancers and aspiring singers  with a dance and voice camp.

You may have seen large groups of young folks walking around our arts community with a happy woman pointing at things and singing NoHo’s praises. That’s us, the NoHo Arts District dot Com team. If you ever see our groups, please make sure to give our tour guests a big “WELCOME to NOHO!” greeting.

 NoHo Tours

In addition to running nohoartsdistrict.com, our team operates NoHo Tours. For 10 years, we have provided tours and arts workshops to high school students from all over the world. The students love NoHo for its “artsy, urban, bohemian, underground” vibe, just a few descriptive adjectives used by our students. The students enjoy a theatre performance and a stroll through the district being amazed at all the theatres, dance and music studios, acting schools and galleries. The excitement really rises when students see the young actors rehearsing their lines at local restaurants, dancers practicing their steps in front of many dance studios with independent filmmakers shooting right on the streets. Tour groups can choose from more than 25 entertainment industry workshops and custom designed training in dance, acting, singing, music and filmmaking.

NoHo Tours was proud to serve its first tour group of high school students from Beijing, China. Students came to NoHo for four days where they took vocal coaching and dance classes at Millennium Dance Complex. They even had a workshop with a seasoned choreographer who explained the “nuts and bolts” of the commercial dance world.

NoHo Tours Chinese Dance and Vocal Camp

The tour organizer was Zongmei Education & Consulting LTD, a leading student tour company in China. We were pleased to meet Cathy Guo, president, Justine Yu, project director and Stephanie Tang, director assistant. In 2007, Cathy Guo started the student and business tour company. A major motivation was she observed some negative limitations of her son’s schooling such as the demanding amount of time spent on school work and not on the whole child’s well being. Cathy wanted to find a better educational method and sought out experimental education and character development based on travel. After seeing amazing changes in her son through travel, she wanted to share this concept with other families and students. This is how “G Light Project” was created. The program focuses on developing a teen’s character through educational travel providing them with opportunities to experience the arts and interact and exchange ideas with local students. The mission of the program is to inspire students to experience the joy of self development and pursuing their dreams. They found out about NoHo Tours through the Beijing office of Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board who recommended our winter and summer arts training camp.

Chinese dance and voice camp NoHo Tours

We asked the Cathy, Justine and Stephanie what they liked about the tours…
We were very warmly welcomed and taken care of by NoHo Tours. The environment at Millennium Dance Complex was very accepting and encouraging…a very positive influence where there was no judgement that promoted self confidence and communication. This arts camp experience gave the students hope to believe they can find that one dream in their life to work hard towards.

How some of the Chinese dance students how they felt about their experience:

“Dance is not just about physical movement but it is about adding your own emotion and using your own way to expressed this dance. Before I would be very critical about the way I dance, but being here, I am encourage by everyone and it motivated me to try my best to dance well.”

Here’s their video where they explain what dance means to them!

Adopt a Pet – Stray Cats Need Love, Too!

If you live in Los Angeles, then you’ve likely seen the many stray or feral cats that roam the streets. Newborn kittens are so adorable and always in high demand, so unfortunately, other (usually older) cats in greater need of care are often left unattended. It’s heartbreaking to see, but there are ways to solve this problem and save many of their lives.

cat1

First, let’s understand the difference between stray and feral cats. Strays are cats that were formerly household pets; they somehow detached from their family, leaving them alone in the big city. Feral cats are typically the resulting offspring from cats that were not neutered and spayed. There’s no exact way of distinguishing between stray cats and feral cats just by looking at them, some may be socialized to people, and some are “wild”. Without the regular care and grooming cats get from their human parents, they will look scruffy and might act skittish. Regardless, it’s important to be cautious with the cats you meet on the street.

cat3

How Can You Help? Number one, ALWAYS SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR CATS! The procedure actually reduces the risk of some diseases and infections, adding health and quality of life for your pet. Doing so also prevents unwanted litters and ultimately eliminates the amount of feral cats on the street. One simple procedure creates endless solutions!

Secondly, when you come across homeless cats there are plenty of ways to help their situation, such as leaving food to feed them or carefully capturing them using specific methods. Whether feeding or rescuing a cat, the key is to be very patient. Just because you have good intentions does not mean the cat will be comfortable with you right away, you must earn trust.

cat2

If you want to provide food for cats, the best way is to use repetitive actions. Feeding strays is very different from feeding your family cat. At the same time each day, find a place to leave dry cat food and water. Do not feed them milk. Nighttime is a popular time to leave food since cats are more likely to be roaming. The first step when placing the food is to give a signal, like shaking a bag of dry food. After a while, cats will relate that sound to the time they get to eat. The best places to leave the food and water are areas small enough where cats can maneuver and where larger animals cannot. Finding the best spot may take several attempts, but if the food hasn’t been eaten after the first attempt, pouring sardine oil over the dry food can help cats discover it. It is important to keep trying. Check the area after a period of time to see if has been eaten; this will confirm your success.

cat4

Once you know the local cats have found the food, you can take a step further by gradually being present while they eat. It’s important not to be too aggressive with your presence; stray cats need time to become comfortable around strangers. This may take days or weeks, but once they are comfortable eating around you, you can work towards rescuing them. If you are not comfortable rescuing cats yourself, you can call your local rescue shelter and notify them of the time you feed your cats. This procedure should work best when you go about a normal feeding, and you are close by. Becoming friendly with the cats is imperative. Any attempt in helping strays is eased when the cats trust you as a safe nurturer.

Take action in your neighborhood and in others’. Start befriending the strays near your home using these methods, and educate people in areas outside your own. Share this article! You have nothing to lose, and the cats have everything to gain.

NoHo Makes Web Series

FYI, NoHo Folks Create Web Series, By The Way.

The NoHo Arts District dot Com team always looks to feature fun, creative and talented North Hollywood folks. We know the NoHo arts community is home to 20+ theatres, dance studios, recording venues, great restaurants and bars and lots of fun. But what we don’t see even though it is everywhere, is filmmaking. North Hollywood is rich with creative movie and TV makers but also makers of unique web series. The recent The Indie Series Awards at El Portal shows just how big this genre is getting but also that the NoHo Arts District contributes to this art medium. We are fortunate to have chatted with locals Andy Goldenberg, creator of Bad Timing, and Jerry White, creator of The Marriage Counselor. We asked them some questions on their web series and also their advice. Let’s give a big NoHo round of applause to these two and their teams for making art for all of us to see, all over the world, on our laptops, ipads and phones.

Bad Timing

Bad Timing www.nohoartsdistrict.com

BAD TIMING is a comedic web series that follows an adorably awkward IT guy who finally gets a shot with the girl of his dreams – shortly after a zombie apocalypse. It’s THE WALKING DEAD, if it had been written by a young Woody Allen.

{youtube}GD93RoUHwvQ{/youtube}

Andy Goldenberg: “We ran a successful crowdfunding campaign for Season 1 last year, and our plan is to raise even more money for Season 2. This season finale ends on a cliffhanger and we’re pretty confident viewers will want to see the exciting surprises we have in store for our characters.

There are at least three more seasons of BAD TIMING that I want to develop, so I haven’t focused on creating any new longform web series. I had previously collaborated with my director on his series called THE LOFT, and hope to release that on the Goldentusk channel next. Other than that, I am occasionally releasing one-off sketches on my own channel and partnering with other creators on their material.

I wanted to limit the episodes in the first season to five minutes because of a constant shortening of attention span, but our fans have repeatedly commented that they want longer episodes. The fans win.

My advice: We’ve seen your story before. It’s not original. We’ve never met your characters, though, and their experiences and point of view is going to be what makes it watchable. Focus on character development and your viewers will forget that it’s just another _______ story.

I’ve been making movies since I borrowed my dad’s camcorder at the age of 7, so it only makes sense that I was one of the early adopters of internet video sharing. My sketch group The 11th Hour’s THE OUTTAKES OF THE CHRIST was lauded as one of the top short films of 2004 by iFilm.com. By 2007, my theme song parodies on YouTube had helped me rank among the Top 30 Comedy Channels of All Time. I collaborated with ManiaTV.com and National Lampoon on an internet sketch comedy show, which led me to the world of branded entertainment, creating videos for Dice.com and Yellow Pages/AT&T. My Goldentusk channel recently joined forces with Collective Digital Studios, boasts 48 million views and 52 thousand subscribers, and I was one of the first Creators invited to produce content at the new YouTube Studios in Los Angeles. My web series, BAD TIMING, was created to showcase my talent more than the co-star and guest star credits from my tv/film work. Nina Terrero from Entertainment Weekly just called it “the best zombie webseries everrr”, one of “the coolest, quirkiest, and absolute weirdest new web series.” “

The Marriage Counselor

The Marriage Counselor www.nohoartsdistrict.com

THE MARRIAGE COUNSELOR is a dark comedy that dives us into the not-so-clear world of the “counselor”. Season 1 introduces us to five couples dealing with many differences and, after meeting the counselor, probably wish they had just stayed home.

Suffice it to say, the counselor’s antics are less than helpful and, if he keeps it up, someone could get hurt!

{vimeo}83346972{/vimeo}

What are your plans for your webseries?
We are currently in talks with JTS.Tv to distribute the show.

What would you do differently for your next web series, will there be another?
We would probably make the first season a couple episodes longer. We are about to start shooting another series and hope to continue The Marriage Counselor into season 2. We already have 7 episodes written for a second season.

Any advice for up-and-coming film and TV show creators?
Make the show you want to watch.

Tell us your background and what brought you to create your series.
I met the writer of the series at a 9-5 job that we both worked at. We decided to develop it from a short film to a webseries over the course of a year. After the show was finished we went into business together and we have continued to create content since. Our company Moondog Media is now in production on our first feature film.

The NoHo Arts Community Spotlight – Ben Henriques

The NoHo Arts Community has grown into a creative hotbed for musicians from around the world. Both new and established musicians frequent our 30+ recording studios with AMP Rehearsal & Recording Studios leading the way with clientele such as Prince, Katie Perry and Black Eyed Peas to name a few. Today, we are spotlighting a Canadian jazz saxophonist, Ben Henriques – Captain Awesome

‘Captain Awesome’ is the second studio album from Vancouver, BC based saxophonist Ben Henriques…one of the many rising stars in the Canadian jazz scene. Ben Henriques, composer and group leader puts a much needed spin to contemporary modern jazz with his own unique compositional voice.

Unlike most saxophone players who choose to play with a abrasive, screaming in your face, tear paint off the walls tone. Ben Henriques chooses to play with a soft, rich in dynamics tone. Not only does this make his solos more musical, it also helps bring out the most in his composition and create a organic liveliness within the music. The music is less fatiguing, easier to listen to and much more enjoyable. It feels less like a marathon of music that you force yourself to finish. Much like his tone, his compositions are created with the same ideas in mind. With the use of vibrant colorful melodies and fun playful rhythms, he provokes the imagination and takes you on a musical journey inspired by comics, movies, and imaginary worlds. Alongside Ben Henriques is the support of other great Canadian jazz musicians with Dave Liang on Drums, Josh Rager on Piano, Kenny Bibace on guitar and Fraser Hollins on Bass. Within the group they help aid Henriques in developing the musical storyline that is heard throughout the album.

If you would like to hear more from Ben Henriques you can purchase his album ‘Captain Awesome’ at http://www.chronographrecords.com/releases.php?album=36

North Hollywood Woman Is Conquering Her Dreams in Her 70s

In NoHo, age has no relevance to fulfilling your dreams, just ask Angela McEwan

Angela McEwan noho senior arts colony, www.nohoartsdistrict.com

There are those who will simply exist, and then there are those who will truly live and thrive.

Angela McEwan, a resident of the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartment Community, is one of the latter.

As a woman in her seventies, you wouldn’t expect to find McEwan chasing down auditions and landing roles in popular TV shows, much less an Oscar nominated film. But that’s exactly what she’s doing.

Recently appearing in the Oscar nominated film “Nebraska,” McEwan decided to seize her retirement years and pursue a lifelong childhood dream of becoming an actress. In addition to her recent film success, McEwan has appeared on “Days of Our Lives,” “New Girl,” and “Parks and Recreation,” among others.

Although life’s circumstances took her on a long path to get there, McEwan eventually found her dream realized.

Born in Los Angeles, McEwan spent her childhood idolizing Shirley Temple and dreaming of the day when she would see her own face on the big screen.

Throughout her youth and well into adulthood, she acted in community theatre every chance she got, and studied theatre arts at UCLA before she headed off to study Spanish in Guadalajara.

Soon after returning from Guadalajara, McEwan met her husband.

“Before I knew it, I was married, raising two children and spending the next twenty-three years working as an interpreter for the Long Beach Courthouse,” she quips.

While she loved her family and her job, there was always a small piece missing.

“I always had a love affair with acting,” she says.

This love affair never subsided, and when she retired she knew that she had to seize the opportunity.

In order to do so, she knew she needed to move closer to potential auditions and truly dedicate herself to her craft. She decided to move to North Hollywood and found herself inspired by a small community, known as the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments.

“It was here that I was able to truly delve into my acting career,” McEwan says, explaining that she immediately found herself actively engaged and passionate about something she had been dreaming of since a child.

McEwan is truly the star in her own series, and the embodiment of the never ending journey of self-re-invention. She proves that at any age the possibilities are limitless, and that it is never too late to start chasing dreams.

The NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartment Community is located at 10747 Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood, California. Furnished model apartments are available to tour seven days a week, and leasing information is available at (855) 399-5381. Further information on the project is at www.NoHoSeniorArtsColony.com.
