When did you realize you loved poetry?
When I was 13 and created my first poem. It was amazing!

How did you get started?
There were a few opportunities in middle school to become involved with a city wide literary competition. I won an Honorable Recognition in 8th grade. It motivated me! I was also in Poetry journal put together by the city, I think, and it was at this reading when I was first introduce to the Beat Poets. That opened the door to my journey with poetry!

What is it that you enjoy about poetry?
The entire process! From flowing with a stream in your head, to paper, to realizing that you’ve created something tangible and expressive. It’s freeing! Your words are as honest as the moment you wrote them in. No matter how distant the poem… you can always reclaim the feelings, mood, and tone that went through you when you wrote it. It’s an amazing way to reconnect to the moments you lived.

What’s coming up next?
I was recently at Gatsby Books for the Launch Party for the Revolutionary Poets Brigade Anthology – Los Angeles! I have two poems in the book and I am very excited and honored to be a part of the collection. The show starts at 7pm. The anthology is such a strong collection of today’s voices on social issues and happenings. Books will be available for sale and signing!

SoapBox Poets Open Mic, which I host at Beyond Baroque at 681 Venice Blvd. in Venice, it goes every 2nd Sunday at Beyond Baroque. The show begins at 2pm to 4pm and we are excited to host Poet, John Martinez!

Writer Wednesday is every Wednesday night at Bob’s Espresso Bar from 7- 9:30pm — the home of Creative Community in North Hollywood! We open our mic to all creative genres! Come on down because the list fills fast.

One thing you would like to add…
I want to thank the community of North Hollywood for embracing Writer Wednesdays at Bob’s Espresso Bar and creating such a beautiful masterpiece with your art! You MAKE this happen! Write on!

Hiking the Inca Trail up to Machu Pichu. Are you ready for the Adventure Trip of a Lifetime?

peru-inca-trail-trek-9 1

Peru, an extraordinarily diverse country, is home to part of the Andes mountains, a beautiful arid coast, and a large part of the Amazon rainforest. With all of this diversity, it’s no wonder people want to visit here. In addition, Peru is home to Machu Picchu, one South America’s oldest ancient civilizations, and, and iconic location for foreigners to see.

One year from now, in April 2015, I’ll be teaming up with Zephyr Adventures and hosting another “Travel with the Trainer” trip. This time it’s a 9-day trip to Peru, which features a 4-day hike up to the ruins of Machu Pichu.

Hiking the Inca Trail and visiting Machu Picchu in Peru is on many an adventure traveler’s bucket list, and for good reason. Trekking the Classic Inca Trail is not easy, but is within reach of even casual athletes who take the time to mentally and physically prepare themselves. And the rewards? Astounding! Can you imagine hiking on the very stones placed by Incan workers over 500 years ago to create this vast trail network, or walking through a cloud forest, or seeing the sun rise over the steep Andes Mountains from the comfort of your warm tent and sleeping bag?

Our days on the trail will be filled with the stunning sights surrounding us, while nights are spent swapping stories and learning about the area from our local guides. We sleep in tents for our three nights on the trail and have local porters carry our equipment and cook our meals. While this is camping, it is luxurious and truly exotic.

This Adventure is for people looking for a challenging and culturally interesting vacation. Machu Picchu is one of the most amazing places on the earth and is that much better after having spent four days walking there on the Inca Trail. If you are active, willing to brave a foreign culture, and looking for a little adventure, come join me in Peru!

Here’s a brief overview of the trip:

Day 1
Location: Lima
Lodging: Casa Andina
Activities: Guides will meet us at the Lima airport and transfer you to our downtown hotel.

Day 2
Location: Ollantaytambo
Lodging: Hotel Pakaritampu
Activities: We take an internal flight to Cusco, the gateway city to Machu Picchu. We shuttle directly to the town of Ollantaytambo, where we hike through the nearby archeological ruins.

Day 3
Location: Ollantaytambo
Lodging: Hotel Pakaritampu
Activities: Today we explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas as we continue to adjust to the altitude. We start with a visit to Moray, ruins, and hike downhill to Maras, a series of pools created by the Incas to harvest salt from a salt-laden natural spring.

Days 4-7
Location: The Inca Trail
Lodging: Camping
Activities: The Inca Trail! We hike on the ancient trail of the Incan Emperors. Local guides tell us about the ruins and flora we pass, while our cooks prepare delicious meals to recharge us at lunch and in the evening. On the Classic Inca Trail, total kilometers of hiking each day are fairly moderate: 12, 8, 13, and 13 kilometers. On our final day on the Inca Trail, we emerge to the wondrous site of the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. We simply sit on our perch above the ruins and soak in the beauty of the area before being bussed down to our hotel in the nearby town of Aguas Calientes (“hot waters”).

Day 8
Location: Cusco
Lodging: Picoaga Hotel
Activities: We arise early to explore Machu Picchu in the crisp morning hours before the trainloads of tourists arrive. You’ll have the option to climb a steep hill to the temple on Huayna Picchu before taking the train back to Cusco. We celebrate our victory with a farewell dinner.

Day 9
Location: Departure Day
Activities: We spend the morning in Cusco, visiting the ruins of Sacsayhuaman and the Korikancha temple. You’ll have a few hours to explore this wonderful town before we take a flight back to Lima.

Cost for the trip is $3,000 plus airfare. A $500 non refundable deposit is due up front. If you are strongly interested please conCost for the trip is $3,000 (land only) which includes all accommodations, meals, camping, porters, private chef, ground transportation, park entrance fees, and taxes. A $500 non refundable deposit is due up front. If you are strongly interested please contact me for more details and to secure your spot. I’ll also be offering discounts on personal fitness training packages and group exercise classes for people who sign up for the trip. And, I’ll be leading a few free local group hikes in LA to prepare ourselves for the trip as well.

* Additional costs include international roundtrip airfare from your city to Lima (about $1,150) and an internal roundtrip flight from Lima to Cusco (about $350).

Can you own your own home in NoHo?

Owning is the Way to Go for Many in NoHo

MBK Homes Vineland Metro on www.nohoartsdistrict.com

An increasing number of Angelenos are opting to call North Hollywood home, as this thriving neighborhood continues to attract interest with its creative vibe, convenient location and diverse array of eateries, shops and entertainment venues. And for many who decide to make the move to North Hollywood, it may actually make more sense to purchase a residence here rather than rent one.

Buying vs. Renting
Though homeownership has been perceived in recent years as out of reach for a large percentage of the U.S population, the reality is that buying a house oftentimes stacks up against renting as the more affordable option – even in urban regions such as Los Angeles. It is actually 24% cheaper to purchase than to rent in Los Angeles right now, according to the most recently published Rent Vs. Buy report from real estate data provider Trulia.

Of course, potential buyers need to take various factors into consideration when calculating the cost difference between buying and renting. For the clearest comparison, it is best to zero in on a specific neighborhood and look at prices and rents of similarly sized residences in that area.

In North Hollywood, monthly mortgage payments for single-family residences at Vineland Metro, a brand new community opened here by MBK Homes, actually pencil out to be less expensive than rents at some of the hottest apartment properties that have been built as of late in the neighborhood.

Current rental rates for three-bedroom, two-bath luxury apartment units in the NoHo Arts District range from upwards of $2,900 per month for approximately 1,200 square feet to more than $4,200 per month for around 1,360 square feet. In contrast, three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath homes ranging in size from 1,594 to 1,629 square feet at Vineland Metro (which is adjacent to the NoHo Arts District) are presently selling for between $450,000 and $470,000. Those prices equate out to monthly mortgage payments that range from approximately $2,850 (based on a conforming 30-year fixed-rate with 10% down) to $3,200 (based on an FHA 30-year fixed-rate with 3.5% down).

As the examples above illustrate, becoming a North Hollywood homebuyer instead of a renter may just get you more space for your buck.

MBK Homes Vineland Metro on www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Locking in Lower Prices
North Hollywood also offers lower home prices than various other areas in the vicinity. For instance, the neighboring City of Burbank had a median sales price of $551,750 for homes sold from January to April 2014, while North Hollywood had a median sales price of $442,500 for this same time period, according to recent research from Trulia.

And locking in today’s relatively low mortgage rates will ensure you have a manageable monthly payment over the long term. According to newly released April data from Freddie Mac, the 30-year, fixed-rate average has fallen slightly to 4.34%. However, mortgage rates are expected to rise to nearly 6% over the next year, so buying today could save you a bundle. In addition, with a fixed-rate mortgage, your monthly payments will remain stable over time. This is a significant plus over renting, which leaves you at the whim of unforeseen rate increases from year to year.

Considering the Variables While owning offers obvious advantages for many, there are definite questions to weigh before taking the plunge and purchasing a home.

Crucial factors to consider include how long you plan to stay in the home and how much it is expected to appreciate over that time period. North Hollywood is one area where home values are on the rise, with the median sales price of $442,500 reported by Trulia representing an increase of 16.6% or $72,500 compared to the same period one year ago. Looking back over the last five years, sales prices have appreciated 42.7% in North Hollywood, according to Trulia.

Buying makes sense if you have enough money saved to make a decent down payment. A high credit score is also important, as it goes a long way in securing you the best possible mortgage rate.

Reaping the Rewards
For those who are in a good position to purchase, homeownership offers a number of benefits.

When you buy a residence, you not only have the chance to build equity as the house appreciates in value, but you can also take advantage of special tax breaks offered only to homeowners. In addition, there are no monthly community fees involved, which even some apartments have. And purchasing a house often spurs a greater sense of community pride, which can result in lower crime rates and better-maintained properties in areas with higher homeownership.

Another advantage of owning over renting is the opportunity for a more private, personalized space to call home. Buyers at new home communities normally have the option of customizing the interiors of their residence by choosing from a selection of different cabinets, counters, fixtures, paint and flooring. At North Hollywood’s Vineland Metro community, for example, buyers can choose from unique designer selected flooring packages available in an array of color choices. Homes here also offer low maintenance, which is often an added benefit of buying new.

When it comes down to it, buying a home can offer a number of advantages over renting – and is often more economical than what many may think.

Bob’s Espresso Bar – more than just (great) coffee.

Bob’s Espresso Bar – a place for coffee and poetry

Bob's Espresso Bar www.nohoartsdistrict.comI walk into Bob’s Espresso Bar on Lankershim Boulevard in the heart of the NoHo Arts District a little late tonight.

It’s another Wednesday night and I am about to co-host the Writer Wednesday Open Mike and Feature at 7pm with my NoHo co-hort Jessica Wilson.

But Bob (Robert Romanus) who has been the owner and proprietor of this independent coffee shop since February of last year, catches my eye and we go outside to talk.

On first appearance, Bob does not look that different from the young actor he was when he starred in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” the 1983 coming-of-age comedy that defined the early 80s, and, well, the rest of the decade. It also launched the career of a very young Sean Penn.

Bob tells me that he opened the coffee shop because he needed a job.

“I,” says Bob, “could either own a coffee house or work in one. If I owned one I could make it what I want.”

Bob drills a hole in the sidewalk with his eyes.

“I have always been a fan of coffee houses,” says Bob. “(The coffee shop) is an extension of everything I love under one roof.”

{youtube}cU_OJnmmuTU{/youtube}

Bob is one of the busiest actors in Los Angeles and recently finished another independent film.

“I was a singing waiter,” Bob explains about how he became an actor, ”and I was shy. So I took an acting class and fell in love with the idea that I can be whomever I want to be.”

Bob pauses.

“What I love about acting,” Bob stresses, “is that it allows me to do and say things on stage and film that I can’t in real life.”

Bob points-out that the reason he started the coffee shop is because he could not find what he was looking for in the neighborhood.

“I used to live up the street,” Bob says, shaking his head, “and I couldn’t find what I was looking for anywhere.”

Bob's Espresso BarBob smiles.

“(The coffee shop),” he says, “has sort of taken on a life of its own.”

But the lead singer and guiding force behind the rock n’ roll band “Poppa’s Kitchen” admits times are not easy.

“I’m always broke,” Bob says, “and sometimes I can’t even find money for cigarettes.”

Bob stares straight ahead and realizes that he has another customer waiting.

“We are still struggling,” Bob emphasizes, “but we are doing better.”

I go inside the coffee shop where tonight’s Featured Poet Le Anne Hunt is riffling through her work.

“This is a very welcoming and friendly place,” Hunt says. “I would come here again. I am excited about featuring. A little nervous, but excited.”

I recognize Chris Nash, a musician and regular at Bob’s. He has just finished singing the allotted two songs per musical act. I ask him to step outside and talk. Nash obliges.

Nash looks me straight in the eyes. He credits Bob’s and Writer Wednesday for making him play his guitar again.

“(At Bob’s) it’s do your thing and everybody appreciates your art,” says Nash, dressed mostly in black.

“I like the diversity,” Nash continues, “There’s a lot of inspiration (at Bob’s). I needed to pick-up a guitar and checked-out the internet and there was Bob’s.”

At Bob’s, Nash reunited with Bob with whom he starred in the television series, “The Best of Times.”

The native New Yorker was also looking for an arts scene and has found it at Bob’s.

“I wanted a scene,” says Nash, “and this is like a little So Ho or Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground.”

To the left of Nash, Michael Zvaleko and Corrie Wisner are talking.

Zvaleko, from the Ukraine, likes Bob.

“Bob is a nice guy,” says Zvaleko, smiling. “It’s good people here with a minimal set-up. I would come here again.”

This is Wisner’s second time at Bob’s.

“I was here once before,” says Wisner, who is on the Executive Board (Secretary) of the North Hollywood West Neighborhood Council, “and I had a coffee. I would rather support an independent coffee house like this than the chains.”

Wisner is fond of the ambiance at Bob’s.

“There is a lot of character inside (the coffee shop),” says Wisner, “ but it’s not pretentious.”

Wisner says that Bob’s is a big part of the community.

“If you are part of the community,” Wisner points-out, “and want to feel supported, then this is the place to come.”

I run into guitarist and vocalist Joe Willis nearby.

Bob's Espresso Bar www.nohoartsdistrict.com“One day I was just walking by Bob’s,” recalls Willis, 28, of Elfers, FLA, “and he said I could come in and we jammed together . Bob’s music brought me here. It wasn’t like we were meeting, it was like we were re-connecting.”

Willis says that going to Bob’s feels like family.

“What I experience (at Bob’s) is an extended family,” says Willis, who is part of the rock n’ roll group, “The 66,” which has featured at Bob’s and Skinny’s Bar in North Hollywood. “I get positive energy (at Bob’s), collaboration takes place. I feel every time I come here it’s a new experience. What I get from Bob’s is a home.”

Willis emphasizes that being a regular at Bob’s has helped his music.

“I feel my music has grown (at Bob’s),” says Willis. “It’s not anything I pick-up. From Wednesday to Wednesday I express what I’ve been feeling in that week, the accumulation of positive, negative and life in general.”

Willis also says that being homeless has made him stronger.

“Being homeless,” says Willis, “has actually helped me. I had to learn to rely on myself.”

Willis stresses that his life is now his music.

“My music,” says Willis “is now the line I walk. Life has bottlenecked me to a certain road.”

Beverly Swanson, a poet, read in the open mike for the first time tonight. I ask her to come outside and talk.

Swanson explains that the audience at Bob’s is more accepting towards her poetry.

“My poetry,” says Swanson, “meshes with Bob’s. It’s a very receptive, organic environment. It transports me to different genres, possibilities and time periods.”

Swanson, another native New Yorker, says that Bob’s is something special if you’ve never been there before.

“If you’ve never been here before,” says Swanson,” you’re in for a treat with unique performances and a relaxed atmosphere.”

My fiancee Patricia Murphy is enjoying the night air when I approach her.

The half Irish, half Italian sparkplug deeply appreciates Writer Wednesday and Bob.

“Bob’s Espresso Bar,” stresses Murphy, who is a native North Hollywood, “is a congenial, artistic and friendly atmosphere where people can perform to their heart’s content. Bob is a warm, considerate and compassionate artist, actor and musician. His generosity in allowing poets, singers, comics and musicians to perform is a fait accompli.”

I go inside and ask Juan Cardenas, who is Wilson’s husband, and a regular from day one, to come outside and chat.

Cardenas sites the many different cultures and friends he has observed and made at Bob’s as the major reasons for his coming every week.

“The diversity of the arts,” says Cardenas, 28, from Leon, Mexico in the province of Guanajuato, “to music from all over the world and also the friends I’ve made from so many beautiful countries is why I come here.”
Cardenas says that both his music and poetry have grown because of Bob’s.

“My music has grown,” Cardenas insists, “along with my musical ability at (Bob’s). The other musicians have changed my life.”

Bob’s has seen his poetry break through, according to Cardenas.

“With poetry, the best is here,” says Cardenas, “it is like English 101 and better. Bob’s was my starting ground as a poet.”

Cardenas says there is a definite scene outside Bob’s.

“The scene here,” says Cardenas,” is definitely growing. All ego goes out the window. If you pass by Bob’s you hear people talking about poetry, music, politics and art. There are no judges here. There should be no apologies from anyone on the microphone.”

After all, as serendipity would have it, Cardenas and Wilson, both big fans of the rock n’ roll band the Doors, met on opening night of Writer Wednesday.

“I am indebted to,” says Cardenas, speaking softly, “Jessica Wilson and Radomir Vojtech Luza for starting this open mike. It has helped artists and people grow and prosper.”

Wilson is not far away now that another Writer Wednesday is over.

“I launched Writer Wednesday with Julio Rodriguez, the conga poet,” Wilson explains “at the Republic of Pie (in North Hollywood). It didn’t work. They were interested in only music. So now I’m doing Writer Wednesday with Radomir Vojtech Luza at Bob’s. It is a mesh of arts.”

Co-hosting at Writer Wednesday has encouraged Wilson to write more.

“I get excited to share my work more,” says Wilson, 33, born in East Los Angeles. “It has been very enriching. It has encouraged me to write more since now I have a creative family to share it with.”

Wilson sees a scene developing around Bob’s.

“I believe there has been a scene (at Bob’s) since the conception,” Wilson points-out. “We have regulars that collaborate with one another. Bands come together. Lots of relationships are made at Bob’s and keep coming back.”

Wilson also emphasizes that there is a sense of community at Bob’s.

“There is a tight cultural community (at Bob’s),” says Wilson. “All these people have stops along the way and spread the word about Bob’s.”

Wilson, wearing a coat and smiling, is excited about a recent endorsement.

“I am excited as a co-founder (of Writer Wednesday) that ‘Poet and Writer Magazine’ has named Bob’s the number two literary destination in Los Angeles.

Wilson’s hazel eyes widen.

“I would like to say ‘step up to your mike.’”

Meet Local Poet Radomir Luza

NoHo Does Poetry – a National Poetry Month Feature on local poets

Radomir Luza National Poetry Month NoHo Arts District poets www.nohoartsdistrict.comThe NoHo Arts District dot Com team always strives to showcase the work of our local NoHo arts community and to celebrate national holidays and designations that promote the arts. April is National Poetry Month and we’d like to introduce North Hollywood to one of our local poets, Radomir Luza.

When did you realize that you loved poetry?
I realized that I loved poetry when I read my first poetry book in elementary school at the age of ten. All those rhyming words, colors and shapes made me think. It also made me wiser, more intelligent and more courageous.

Poetry, through the years, has helped me dance through a bevy of psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists; sleeping on concrete and in shelters and enough pain, paranoia and anguish to paralyze an army of giants.

How did you get started?
I got started writing poetry in my hometown of New Orleans in 1986 when my world came crashing down around me. I had just come back from my first failed move to New York City. My family tried, but couldn’t understand me. My best friends were nowhere to be found, and all I sensed around me were apathy, bleakness and darkness.

To deal with the alienation, anxiety and fear I was experiencing at the time I started writing poetry. Whether political, philosophical or metaphysical, it came from my soul of souls, my gut, my solarplexis of greatest need.

The thing that really attracted me to poetry was that unlike theatre or film, I was reading and performing my words and beliefs, not someone else’s.

I remember the first poetry reading I ever went to was at a restaurant or bar in New Orleans. There was only the bartender and me. So, I read to him.

I felt accepted at poetry readings. I felt that what I had to say was taken seriously, and that people and other poets recognized that I had a lot of talent, and instead of being jealous or angry at me for it, they wished me even more success.

I must admit that no matter how bad it got, I get my love of art and politics from my parents, Radomir Sr. and Libuse Podhraska. My father fought in the Czech Resistance in World War II led by my grandfather Vojtech Luza, who was murdered by the Nazis in 1944.

My mother was the youngest actress ever accepted into the Czech National Dramatic Conservatory at 15 before Adolf Hitler closed the doors in 1943.

They then escaped Communism in their beloved Czechoslovakia in 1948, eventually coming to America in 1953.

I have been writing verse now for 28 years and will publish my 25th book, 16th collection of poetry, and first collection in three years, “New York Nadir” later this month.

The book is inspired by my second failed move to New York City and only divorce. “Nadir” means desperation, low point or rock bottom.

I am the Poet Laureate of North Hollywood, a Pushcart Prize nominee and have had poetry published in over 40 literary journals, anthologies and websites such as “Nerve Cowboy,” “Spare Change,” “Askew,” “Boog City,” “Cultural Weekly” and “RogueScholars.com.”

I have featured my poetry 80+ times across the country.

I have also organized over a dozen readings across the country in places such as New York City, New Jersey, Ft. Walton Beach, FLA, and Los Angeles.

I have also taught poetry to youngsters as part of the Youth Poetry Workshop sponsored by the North Hollywood West Neighborhood Council, of which I am President. The 2nd Annual Workshop takes place on May 29th at Saticoy Elementary School.

What is it you enjoy about poetry?
In a word, the independence of it. I can write what I want, not like in journalism, where I have to quote somebody else and build a story around those quotes.

Poetry also allows me to express what I believe in the most creative and powerful ways possible. Whether through alliteration or metaphor, poetry or verse lets me say what I want without bending to some one else’s rules, regulations or beliefs.

I very much enjoy the creativity of writing poetry. Sometimes I just go to Starbucks and write for hours on end. I am in nirvana or utopia then. I also know that I am creating something of merit that will last.

Who needs videotape or replays when you have books or writing?

Where and when will you be performing next?

I have the lead rAnzac reading National Poetry Month NoHo Arts Districtole of Pal in the World War I Epic Play “Anzac,” written by veteran North Hollywood playwright and author Mary Anneeta Mann at 7:30pm on Friday, April 25th at T.U. Studios at 10943 Camarillo Street in the NoHo Arts District at the intersection of Camarillo, Lankershim and Vineland. (Behind Odyssey Video).

The play is based on the experience Mann’s father had as a soldier in the “War to end all wars” which almost killed him twice and proved to not be the war to end all wars.

Mann says that the 300 page play is an attempt by her to understand why wars have forever plagued us and why we cannot seem to stop fighting them. In other words, why killing seems to be so important to us.

I have a featured performance of a new performance piece I co-wrote and will perform with fellow poet Sharon Rizk called “Pen Pals” at the Last Saturday Open Mic and Feature hosted by Wyatt Underwood at the Tarzana branch of the Los Angeles library on Ventura Boulevard on Saturday, April 26th at 2pm.

I am also featuring at the Second Sunday Poetry Series hosted by Alex Frankel at 3433 Cahuenga (Across from Universal Studios) in North Hollywood on May 11th at 5pm. The reading takes place in a beautiful older building that adds ambiance and environment to your work. There is an Open Mic for poets, writers and musicians.

I am also featuring on the last Friday of the month in June (June 27th) at the Rapp Saloon (In the Hostel Building) on Second Street in Santa Monica. The weekly series is hosted by Tresha Haefner on Last Fridays at 8pm.

I just performed stand-up comedy in Flappers Comedy Club’s Main Room and will be doing much more of that in the future. I have been doing stand-up in many of the major clubs in the country for over 25 years, and am only now learning how to relax and be my hilarious self on stage.

Is there anything you would like to add?

There needs to be more of an effort in this country to support the arts. There really isn’t any pipeline system as in Europe and poets, writers and many musicians, actors and comedians are struggling just to stay away from the asphalt (the street). Until we as a culture and society realize how important the arts are to our spiritual, emotional and financial health, we will never be whole.

As far as I am concerned, I would seriously consider a career in politics, but am only now, at the age of 50, realizing that there is more to me than just a label of artist or politician or whatever. I am a well-rounded human being who expresses and encompasses multitudes. And I am NOT bragging.

Happy National Sibling Day – April 10

Celebrate Your Borthers and Sisters…all types

National Sibling Day

According to the U.S. Census, 79% of all children in the U.S. grow up with siblings. That’s a lot of people. So we give our www.nohoartsdistrict.com readers a reminder: April 10, 2014 is National Sibling Day. Surprise your sibling and do something kind.

National Sibling Day is a day to honor, appreciate and cherish all brothers and sisters and memorialize those who are no longer with us. Take the time to give your sibling a hug, e-card, special lunch/dinner or maybe a simple picnic at the local park. For those on a budget and not geographically close to your sibling, send them a poem or a photo of you two playing as children, have a local restaurant deliver them dinner, or a phone call will work, too.

If you and your sibling live near each other and close to North Hollywood, pick up a NoHo Discount Card (nohoartsdistrict.com/nohocard) and discounts off a delicious meal together at The Federal Bar, Bow & Truss or The Eclectic.

Life is short. They got the same blood running through their veins.  Remember what happens when you smile at some one ….they smile back automatically. So take National Sibling Day as a day to make your brother or sister smile.

If you are the only child, you can still celebrate. You can honor the friends who have acted just like a brother or sister. This day is to spread the love to those who stand by you like a sibling is supposed to.

This holiday was created by Claudia A. Evart of New York City to honor the memory of her sister Lisette and brother Alan. Both siblings died from tragic accidents. Claudia established a not for profit organization to promote this wonderful day of sibling appreciation – Siblings Day Foundation, www.siblingsday.org. Since 1998, 56 governors have signed proclamations in 32 states recognizing this day. To our knowledge, there has not been a presidential proclamation or act of congress to make this a true national holiday.

First rule of Independent Filmmaking – keep the camera rolling!

Very Independent Filmmaking – Things Can and Will Go Wrong

scent-independent-film

“It is unwise to be too sure of one’s own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.”

― Mahatma Gandhi

Thanks Mahatma…

Does this mean that the bigger my mistakes are, the larger my intellect?

I’m deciding that it does indeed mean this, and therefore that I am correspondingly enormously wise…

All the preparation in the world can’t prepare you for everything, that said, it is a good idea to be prepared to change everything you have planned to do on the day of filming, at any moment.
Don’t be afraid, without the room to screw up, artists can hardly be expected to create can they?

Not that I am suggesting anarchy, but it’s never ceased to amaze me just how many of my ‘brilliant idea’s’ have come from trying to fight my way out of a corner, mostly that I have painted myself into…too many metaphors?

One short film I made a couple of years ago, during the 52 films/51 weeks project personifies this.

The film in question, ‘Scent,’ was base on a short story my husband had written about a man catching the ‘scent’ of a woman in some ancient middle European city years ago and pursuing her in order to distill her into a perfume….fairly gory stuff to be sure. So I took the idea and adapted into a short screenplay about a woman who’s scent transformed a man into a beast as he pursued her through a city at night. It was supposed to be very romantic, although it still sounds a little gory !
Either way, it was one of my favorite films of the project, and I spent time getting the concept just right, auditioning for the perfect couple and hunting for locations in North Hollywood with magical possibilities.

Cut to the night of the shoot.

I found the perfect leading man, Patrick, truly perfect and already a little hairy.

The women was also an major find, Shawn, a statuesque beauty, strong and striking, equally perfect!

Everything began as planned, although we were shooting at night, the call time was late afternoon for wardrobe and makeup etc. I had a large cast, 10 actors, 8 crew. the more people you have on set, the more potential problems, but all seemed fine.

Then we started shooting and although the first few scenes went well, when we got to the first scene where he transforms a bit, more animalistic, more hairy and a bit growly and I realized that we were not going to get the look I wanted in the time we had to shoot, so unless I wanted a campy version of my idea I had better think of something else.

So I did, I pulled aside my fellow filmmakers and boldly said, “this isn’t going to work.” After the panic in their faces had subsided, they agreed and I talked to my actors and reworked the concept with them and moved on.
My decision was rewarded with one of the best shoots we had for the entire year of filmmaking, the best cast and an lovely soundtrack from a wonderful composer in England to boot!
And it even rained, so the North Hollywood streets looked like a gorgeous filmset, lights reflected everywhere, all lavender and green and gorgeous!

I think the fact that someone got murdered across the street from where we were film, literally murdered, with a gun, reinforced my argument for shaking things up.
So once we made sure that no one was bleeding, we continued filming knowing that any minute the police would probably shut us down as they cleared the area.

First rule of filmmaking – keep the camera rolling!

Which brings me to the most important potential pitfall in filmmaking-

Death, or something like it…

You’re on set, in the middle of filming, everything seems to be going according to plan and suddenly, out of the blue and completely beyond your control or ability to anticipate, something catastrophic occurs that changes everything.

I get strangely calm at these times, perhaps because my brain partially shuts down which gives me a calm appearance, but is actually a stroke like induced stupor. I don’t know, I’m not a doctor, although I have watched a lot of ‘Scrubs,’ so I nearly am. Either way, the calm does seem to help, so go with that. Then move on. Jumping up and down and shouting a lot may seem like fun and even the correct response when it feels like all your hard work and cash have gone to waste because there’s an earthquake and you’ve been red tagged, or your leading lady is in anaphylactic shock, or your location cancels that morning, or, indeed, someone gets shot across the street from where you are filming. But all that noise and energy can startle people, especially actors, so unless you are prepared to just walk away and cancel, try to remain calm.

What do you do? I hear you ask, politely.

Well that all depends on the disaster of course, but generally my advice to you would be, be safe, be calm, take advantage of the opportunity to let life spontaneously effect art and keep filming.

I have had to deal with bullets, no actors, no location, no money for food, broken cameras, no transportation, the sudden appearance of a toddler, death, heartbreak, and biblical sized rain storms. Yet somehow it all magically worked out in the end. Films were made and lives were changed.

Well, at least films were made, I’m still working on the life changing thing…

GREENWOOD 1964, MR. POITIER GIVES HIS BLESSING

MR. POITIER GIVES HIS BLESSING

Greenwood 1964 at The Sherry Theater in the NoHo Arts DistrictNoHo’s Sherry Theater thrives on being a platform for artists to open new works with strong messages our community needs to hear. Our newest friend at the Sherry Theater, Mr. Mohammed Ali Ojarigi, has a message worth listening to, not just through his plays but through his life as well. More than an artist, Mohammed is an activist for positive cultural and social change as well, and his plays are bold and impactful. When Mohammed first came to the Sherry Theater to discuss his new play GREENWOOD 1964, opening this weekend, the story I discovered behind his storytelling had me spellbound.

It seemed Mohammed had gotten a blessing on the play by Mr. Sidney Poitier himself. This was NOT going to be your average play. Sydney Poitier is a legend. How did this actor/writer have such connections? I dug deeper. Here’s what I found.

In 2011, after receiving his degree in Theater Performing Arts at the University of Nevada, Mohammed attended the opening weekend of Harry Belafonte’s biographic documentary “Sing Your Song” and was moved to tears. That was the moment everything clicked for him as an Artist and set his course of action. “Here was a man who was the biggest star of his time and used his platform in the highest regard to enhance humanity. I mean he literally had the president’s ear, pushing social justice agendas and such. How many celebrities are doing that nowadays? What I mostly hear them boasting about is playing basketball with the president”. Returning home, Mohammed was inspired to write a script based on Mr. Belafonte’s trip to Greenwood Mississippi in 1964, a trip that was also taken by Sidney Poitier.

When Mohammed finished the script he let his wife Moya read it first, as he usually did. Then he sent it to his parents Aliyu and Diane; they are always the first eyes to read his work for flow of the story, punctuation and grammar. After a few tweaks he felt confident enough to send it to the representatives for Mr. Sidney Poitier and Mr. Harry Belafonte. Mohammed sent it as a courtesy due to the fact that it’s based upon the two men and an actual trip made to the racially charged town of Greenwood Mississippi in 1964; only the circumstance is fictionalized.

Mohammed wasn’t expecting any correspondence because “when I write it isn’t for anyone but truth and freedom.” Surprisingly, within three weeks Mohammed’s phone was ringing, and it was none other than Mr. Poitier on the other end. At first Mohammed thought it was one of his actor friends trying to pull a fast one. When Mohammed came to the realization that it was in fact Mr. Poitier he quickly put the phone to his wife’s ear and mouthed, “It’s Sidney Poitier!” His wife, shocked and ecstatic, quickly pushed the phone away and returned Mohammed to the hot seat.

Midway through an hour conversation with Mr. Poitier, Mohammed’s heart rate finally began to calm. The two men talked about the play and Mohammed’s other writings, advice Paul Robeson gave to Mr. Poitier, his book writing and his current interests. When Mohammed thanked him for using his artistry as a weapon he said, “We did what we could in our time, now it’s your turn to be the voice of your generation.”

GREENWOOD 1964 opens April 12th at The Sherry Theater and offers childcare for parents – a service through the school Mohammed runs with wife Moya Ojarigi. Proceeds from the play go directly to Inner Child Artistry Learning Academy. The Academy is designed to teach our children the power of their gifts by loving the skin they are in. Inner Child Artistry is currently expanding to service more kids from 18 months to 5 years old.

Greenwood 1964 The Sherry Theater in the NoHo Arts District www.nohoartsdistrict.com

This play takes us back to a time in 1964 Dr. King called “The Year of Promise” due to the rise of fear and control versus the quest for social equality. We are dealing with some of the same issues of fear and control even more so now. If you believe you are the power to make a difference this play will give your soul a hug. It’s our time; this is our “Year of Promise.” Seats are limited, reserve yours today. http://greenwood1964.bpt.me

Saving NoHo’s J.E.T. Studios

J.E.T. Studios needs your help to keep the doors open

JET Studios www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Just so we are all on the same page: Los Angeles is a theatre town and the NoHo Arts District is a theatre district. We have the highest concentration of theatres outside of NYC, by the way. So we want to keep our NoHo arts community a thriving theatre destination and place of creative collaboration and creation. This is why we are writing this article to spread the word on the campaign to keep J.E.T. Studios open.

What is J.E.T. Studios? It is a multi-facet center consisting of three studios, one TV/camera room and a 60-seat theatre with raked seating that provides professional space for theatrical productions, film screenings, rehearsals, virtual and regular casting, acting classes and film/video shoots. Their motto is: “Allowing Artists to Create- A Place Where Relationships Develop.”

We asked Judith from J.E.T. Studios about the predicament.

“How did we end up in this mess? I ask myself the same question. Looking back I ask myself did I not think this out? Was my business plan inadequate? Yes it was. Did I have enough funds to establish my business? Yes I did. But so many outside factors played a hand in creating this dilemma. I felt I was in trouble from the inception. “ – Judith E. Taranto, owner J.E.T. Studios

JET Studios www.nohoartsdistrict.com

J.E.T. Predicament:
She had the required funds to open up shop and invest in this multi-faceted studio and theatre space. She got a loan from the SBA to cover additional costs even though the repayment schedule was unattainable for a small business. Unfortunately, the construction costs soared and the completion was three months behind schedule. She wasn’t able to use the SBA loan initially set aside for operational costs when she first opened because it had to be used for construction costs. So even before opening she had two options: 1. Don’t open and take the loss. Or 2. At least try to make the business work. She chose to open and North Hollywood has had the use of J.E.T. Studios ever since.

{vimeo}89461070{/vimeo}

What are your plans for the Indie GoGo fundraiser?
If the Indie GoGo is successful, we plan to use half of that to supplement our present revenue so we can continue operation for the next four months. During those four months we would like to implement a casting/actors site here at J.E.T. Studios such as Catz, On Your Mark and Actors Access but the difference being we would like our set up to offer more to the actor than the other sites because, after all, our facility is about having a forum that is affordable artists so that they are able to create.

Who’s to say that I won’t be in debt again or maybe not even get out of this debt?
We are in the business of the ARTS- live small theatre! Who has ever made it rich? Who else would work 24/7 and not get paid? Only those who have passion for what they do and believe in.

The problem has never been my business plan-but the lack of cash flow to execute the plan. I was in trouble from the beginning and I knew it. But I couldn’t bail out. We don’t give up.

All joking aside. My business is empty during the day and weekend evenings. Once these spots fill up, J.E.T Studios will never be in debt again. If the casting/actor site pans out JET Studios will flourish and be a place we envisioned.

Music – Deafheaven Interview: George Clarke & Kerry McCoy on their Success & The World of Blogging

It’s hard to imagine that Deafheaven’s success all spawned off the release of their 2010 demo. Even frontman George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy are among the disbelievers, especially since they recorded the four-track effort out of boredom.

Since then it’s been a whirlwind of events for the San Francisco black metal/post rock phenomenon. Praised by the press, hated by black metal purists — you either love ‘em or you don’t. And according to McCoy, that’s the way they like it.

We sat down with Clarke and McCoy to talk about the band’s seemingly overnight rise to prominence, how the world of blogging impacts bands today, and how the desire for success can often be detrimental to success itself.

The NoHo Arts District dot com team asked Zombie Joe’s about hosting the L.A. Weekly Theatre Awards and what it means to the NoHo Arts Community:

“The LA Weekly Awards this year, as hosted by ZJU Theatre Group, is about putting the final nail in the coffin of LA Theater. For the last hundred years, Los Angeles Theater has been disrespected by those who think that LA’s culture stops with Hollywood. Unfortunately, this mindset seems to be infecting those who actively participate in LA’s rich theater community; most evident in the dying art form of theater criticism and media coverage of the LA Theater community. So, at the 35th Annual LA Weekly Theater Awards, we are saying goodbye to the old image of LA theater and witnessing the rebirth of LA theater. Out with the old, in with the new.

As for the impact that the LA Weekly Awards has on NoHo, this is most evident from the perfect example of the ZJU Theatre Group itself. Having been a member of the NoHo Arts District for 14 years, ZJU has seen the explosive growth of the theater community in NoHo (mirrored by the growth of LA theater, at large). All of this, despite the fact that there is little to no love from the Big Brother Media Outlets. The people crave theater. The NoHo Arts District has grown despite the numerous obstacles over the years, because this is what the people want. To walk down Lankershim and hear people discussing theater, talking of certain playwrights, or directors, or amazing performances, it’s not just satisfying, it’s invigorating. It’s incredible to be a part of the NoHo Arts District.”

Interior Design – How to choose the correct chandelier

Over the past few years, lighting has become a key element in design. Its not just used as a utility piece, but has become beautiful centerpieces and jewels for a room. You might need to decide how much or how little the chandelier will shine. Will it determine the style of the room or blend in? Since this is somewhat of a permanent piece, I would try to blend with the style of the house.

So when searching for just the right chandelier, you need to take a few things into consideration. Where is the chandelier going? What style is right for my room? What size should I use?

If you’re going to purchase a chandelier for the dining room you must first determine the size of the room and the table, which it will hang over.

1. The average height over the table should be about 30 to 34 inches above the table.
2. The diameter should be about half the size of the table. If you have a dining table that is 60 inches in diameter, then your lighting should be 30 inches in diameter.

Now, if the entry is the space you’re shopping for, then we need to use a different formula for measuring.

1. The bottom of the chandelier should be about 84 inches above the floor. This allows enough clearance to walk under.
2. Next, you’ll need to measure the entry. Measure the length and width of your entry and add together. If your space is 12×12 then you need a chandelier with a 24-inch diameter. If you have 10-foot ceilings, your light piece should be about 34 inches long. You get that number by adding the length, width and height together.

Remember these measurements are meant to be used as a guideline. Enjoy!

Fitness and Health – Exercise and Diet: More than meets the Eye

ExerciseandDiet 1Go beyond the cosmetic benefits of exercising and eating right. About two weeks into an exercise and diet program, start to write down and record other benefits you may be realizing such as, “feel more flexible,” or, “more energy and endurance at work,” or even, “sleeping better now.” After adopting a healthier lifestyle, the benefits to you will be numerous, each one building on a previous benefit until pretty soon it’s a snowball effect of good things.

Here are just some of the things I’ve heard over the years as a Health and Fitness Coach from my clients after they’ve taken charge of their health and wellness:

“Stronger and more flexible”
“Feel constantly happier”
“Improvement in biomarkers such as cholesterol and triglycerides”
“Better range of motion”
“Less headaches”
“Better eyesight”
“More self-confidence”
“Improved bone density”
“Easier pregnancy and birth”
“Reduction in T-cell count (HIV virus)”
“Less Stiffness and pain in joints”
“Better mental focus and clarity”
“Improved performance for sports”
“Cure diabetes”
“Better balance “
“Less heartburn and acid reflux”
“Feel the need to drink less alcohol”
“Less sickness with flu and colds “
“Breathe easier”
“More sociable”
“Better quality time with my children”
“Able to volunteer more and give back to my community”
“More spiritual”
“Stronger faith”

And the list goes on and on and on and on and on and on! Kind of seems too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, it isn’t. I’ve seen and witnessed all this for the past 12 years doing what I do for a living.

Some other benefits are: the longer you remain consistent with maintaining an exercise program and good eating habits, the more efficient your body will become at burning off its fat stores for an energy source during exercise. Your body relies on stored carbohydrates (glycogen stored in the body) for energy, too, especially for more intense, shorter-duration exercises. Lower intensity, longer-duration exercises tend to utilize more of your fat stores for energy, so here you can see how jogging, hiking, or biking can be a great way to start to train your body to use fat for fuel. Once that starts happening, when you do more intense shorter-duration workouts such as resistance training, your body becomes better at switching over to fat for fuel.

Also, as we age our muscle mass starts to decrease, which makes our metabolism slow down (metabolism is our body’s ability to convert food and other substances into energy, essentially its calorie burning ability). In particular, this becomes a real issue for people over the age of 50. Strength and resistance type of exercises help to retain as much of your muscle mass as possible, therefore keeping your metabolism elevated. Always remember a pound of fat on your body only burns about 2 to 3 calories per day, whereas a pound of lean skeletal muscle burns roughly 50 calories per day. Can you see the difference it can make as you replace your body fat with lean skeletal muscle tissue? Your body becomes a lean, mean calorie burning machine, even while you are watching TV and sleeping!

Get Your Ticket Here! A Profile on TheaterMania.com

theatremania

TheaterMania.com, the premier matchmaking business, bridging the gap between theatergoers and performance art organizations around the world, is definitely not only in the business of sales. Indeed, at first glance, selling tickets to shows appears an obvious reason for the existence of their enterprise. But underneath that is the promise and commitment to provide the public with direct access to discover something for themselves through the consumption of live theater that touches, moves and inspires them while also providing the theater industry with tools and services to increase tickets sales, service their patrons, and manage their organizations. Yes, TheaterMania.com is in the business of contribution.

The Beginning

“We started TheaterMania because it was needed at that time,” says Darren Sussman, the Co-Founder and President of TheaterMania.com, during our interview. “We didn’t feel like there was a centralized place where people could go to get the things that we currently offer, and the inspiration really came about from trying to market other theater productions at that time.” It was the early days of the Internet, and Sussman, along with Co-Founder Joe Corcoran, began marketing several theater productions online, including; Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Corcoran’s long running show Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding. And while they found some websites for shows and some brokers selling tickets, there wasn’t a website or community where they could easily market the shows they were promoting. There was no website for consumers to find comprehensive information, listings, engaging content, and special offers to all the shows in New York and in regional theaters around the country. In other words, there was no TheaterMania.

“There were some theater websites out there,” he says, “but there wasn’t necessarily a portal. So a light bulb went off in our heads, and we saw an opportunity and a need there.” And out of that need, TheaterMania.com was born. And while Joe Corcoran, a theater producer in his own right, eventually migrated back to producing theater, Sussman stayed on board as president of the organization.

Gretchen Shugart, then President of the investment bank advisory firm eMediaCapital, served as TheaterMania’s Investment Banker and officially joined the company in 2001 as CEO. “It was a very good move at the right time,” Sussman comments. “Gretchen is a highly effective CEO. Our company culture is positive, the business model is sound, our consumers and clients are happy, and we continue to grow. I am very grateful for all Gretchen has done and continues to do for the company.”

Growth as an Experience

Because the individuals running TheaterMania.com are not brokers or theater producers, but objective partners to the consumers and the arts organizations alike, their mission has been to service both groups equally. And by fulfilling on their commitment to grow the business of theater companies and arts organizations, they’ve subsequently increased their own business as well because the more venues and arts organizations they partner with, the more access they have to what’s going on in the market place that they can then dispense to the consumers. And it’s this access that allows the TheaterMania staff to write reviews on a plethora of productions, produce video content, provide the latest news, serve the most comprehensive listings, and get the best pricing on tickets.

“Often times when you buy from other sites, you never really know who the ticketing companies are,” he says. “And you may wind up having paid too much, or not getting the seat you wanted once it’s all said and done. So people have come to trust us over the years, and they know that when they buy from us, we’re sending them in the right direction with the right information to get the best ticket at the best price.”

Another reason why arts organizations everywhere might applaud TheaterMania.com with a thunderous roar is due to their web-based software OvationTix, a service TheaterMania.com offers to any arts organization, theater company or ticketed event. “It’s a flexible and affordable multi-use software that offers ticketing, CRM, fundraising, subscriber & patron management. The key is that it’s one database so that clients can do everything from one place and therefore manage their business more efficiently and effectively,” Sussman comments. “It’s web-based, and we have hundreds of clients across the country using it, a lot of them in Los Angeles.”

Still, They Rise

When you look at TheaterMania’s growth, it may seem like their success was a straight shot to the top, absent of any breakdowns or obstacles. But their journey was anything but, with their surge in popularity taking time and creativity in response to limited funds early on for advertising and marketing. The first and most obvious strategy they employed to attract an audience was putting together the most accurate, useful and comprehensive website possible. Then they went the route of guerilla marketing, search engine promotions, PR, and word-of-mouth promotion that came with every happy customer.

“It’s a chicken and egg scenario because you have to grow your audience and you have to grow your revenue, and those things cost money,” he says. “So we had to balance growing our staff and our audience with delivering on the products and services we were selling, and eventually, the revenue came.” Indeed the money did come and TheaterMania.com remains a profitable and growing business. And this comes as no surprise when you realize how much of a stand the TheaterMania.com team takes for their consumers and their clients.

Ascension

While the TheaterMania.com team may be experiencing obstacles, they certainly haven’t been stopped. In fact, they’re already hard at work expanding their company over seas, having recently purchased WhatsOnStage.com, the United Kingdom’s version of TheaterMania.com. “We are fortunate in that WhatsOnStage is already a well known and respected brand. Our plan is to grow and further develop that business. We’ll listen to the market and the consumers because that is what has served us so far.”

And in expanding their reach to an international market, TheaterMania is also optimistic about expanding their reach to include individuals who might not necessarily be fans of live theater. “We want to reach people who may not necessarily know they can see a great show in Los Angeles for less than the price of a movie, or people who may not realize that making it to a Broadway show with their family from the suburbs may not be as difficult or expensive as they think. There really is a lot of great theater across the country that many people have yet to discover.”

So it’s true, TheaterMania.com is the leading, all-encompassing destination for consumers of theater as well as for theater companies and arts organizations around the world. And they continue to make good on their commitment to bringing the most entertaining content, accurate information, and best deals and discounts on theater tickets to their subscribers, while also servicing arts organizations around the world with their premier, web-based software OvationTix. And while to civilians this may seem like a big gorilla to domesticate, the TheaterMania team takes it on daily with alacrity.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
In 2000, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors established the Arts Internship Program to provide internships for nonprofit performing, presenting, literary and municipal arts organizations. This program is a companion program to the Getty Multicultural Internship Program, which provides internships to museums and visual arts organizations.

The purpose of the County’s program is to provide undergraduate students with meaningful on-the-job training and experience working in nonprofit arts organizations, while assisting arts organizations and developing future arts leaders. Through this program, students develop a deeper understanding of the work involved in nonprofit arts administration, better understand the role of the arts in communities and develop “real life” business skills that can be put to use in their future careers. During the 10-week summer internships, participating organizations gain the assistance of a motivated student to help with special or seasonal projects. Participating organizations also play an important role in developing potential new leaders and advocates in the arts sector, who may go on to pursue careers in arts administration or take on board or volunteer responsibilities.

Combined, the Getty and County programs continue to provide the largest paid arts internship program in the United States, employing more than 190 undergraduate interns in arts organizations across LA County during the summer of 2013 alone.

The Los Angeles County Arts Commission gratefully acknowledges the support of The Getty Foundation in providing the funding for the educational program components of the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program.

Acting – Business of being an actor – Part III

If you’ve followed my last two blogs, you’ll remember I talked about how you are a business, and must have your own business plan.

It should be flexible, while holding you accountable, and it should make you feel good about yourself and your progress. I also discussed how there is no one formula, curriculum, certification, or credential to make a successful acting career. I personally believe there are certain required credentials, but still no specific career path.

I tell actors in my classes that you must find your own way, one that feels right to you and makes you feel good about yourself. My advice and opinions are based on 25 years of observation and statistics, after watching thousands of actors pass through Los Angeles as they study and work at the craft. The odds of “success” are small, but that’s part of the game. Don’t take what I say as “the rule,” but use what resonates with you, based on my decades of experience and observation.

Here’s a scenario that I’ve seen hundreds of times, and I apologize if any of my students read this and think I’m writing about them. I assure you it’s not about any one individual, but represents a pattern of attitudes and behaviors.

An aspiring, passionate soul comes to town with the dream to be an actor. Breaking their personal identity issues – maybe even leaving behind a successful life, career, security, and stability – they finally get the courage to eschew living life the way they’ve been told and follow their dreams. The courage to take this creative leap of faith is an important quality, and yes, I respect it. It’s important, and it’s similar to how I came to town as well.

This actor arrives in Los Angeles, settles in, and begins to learn the craft. He checks out some acting classes, auditing here and there, and has begun his acting education. He’s a passionate dreamer, determined to make his “bones” as an artist. I love these people, as they are fresh and alive, and represent what this country is all about – pursuing your dreams and fulfilling your goals to live the life of your destiny.

These students often start out in a beginning class somewhere, and their first conversation with the teacher sounds something like this:

“Will you help me find an agent and get work?”
Having not seen their work or even know if they can act, the teacher tries to encourage them to explore the process and learn what they need to in order to get work.
“I think you should study a while and get some experience first.”
“Okay.”
After two weeks of class:
“Do you think I have talent and can make it? I’ve been here awhile now. Do you think I’m any good?”
“Yes, there is talent, and it needs to be developed. It’s still a little early, you’ve just started.”
“How long do you think?”
“I don’t know, but if you’re focused on ‘making it’ rather than just doing the work, it will take a lot longer than you think”
“Okay.”
A month goes by.
“Will you look at my pictures? I got a great deal on headshots so I had them taken.”
Two more weeks go by:
“Do you know any agents I can submit to?”
One month later:
“A friend of a friend said they could get me a meeting/audition with a big casting director. They said once I’m settled in LA that they could set up a meeting.”
Maybe the contact person went to college with someone, is distantly related, or perhaps they worked together years ago. But there’s some connection. Later that month:
“ I had that audition. Didn’t get the part.”
Sometimes, if I knew the casting person, I would get feedback directly from them. It usually goes like this:
“Great energy, nice personality, needs to train. Have them call me in a year when they get some training and experience.”

That contact is now gone, and the actor is left feeling discouraged. I heard that Jack Nicholson said the best advice he would give an actor is: ”Be ready for your break when it comes along.”

Great advice. Not a lot of words, but brilliant in my opinion. So many actors get the chance to be seen and get a break, and simply aren’t ready, not experienced enough. This is one of my concerns with casting director workshops, where you pay to be seen. There was a time when it was difficult to see a casting director. You needed a good resume, good tape, and someone to refer you, so when you got in, you were a worthy, deserving actor, ready to be seen. Today, anyone can meet a casting director for a price. There is a good side and bad side to this, and I know it’s a controversial conversation, but that’s a conversation for another time, and not what we’re talking about here.

Six months, and thousands of dollars later it’s this:
“I’m leaving town – gave it my shot and didn’t make it.” OR
“ I need to regroup and start over.”

That scenario is an observation of what I’ve seen as an acting teacher for the last 25 years. Not an opinion, just an observation and statistic.

DIFFERENT LEVELS OF ACTORS IN LOS ANGELES

Since there is no curriculum, or set pattern to make a career in this business, many actors feel helpless, frustrated, lost, and waste time and money trying to make the right decisions. Here is my sample guide. Monitor yourself, see where you are and how you’re doing. It’s only a guide. Review yourself; check your strategies and goals; and use it as a barometer. Add and subtract according to your own situation, needs, and desires.

Beginning Actor (one year):
• Takes an acting class on acting craft and the process (at least once a week – the more the better, if you have the time and can afford it; it’s a good investment and will pay off in the long run).
• Reads one play a week.
• Sees 1 to 2 plays a month.
• Sees 3 to 4 movies a month.
• Reads the trades – Backstage, Variety, blogs, etc.
• Volunteers or works in a theater (box office, lights, stage manager, etc). The purpose is to be around actors, see them work, observe, and learn as much as possible about theater. (Remember this – live stage is an actors medium, film is a directors medium, and TV a writers medium. Take advantage of the creative freedom that theater offers.)
• Reads books on creativity and Self, such as “The Artist Way” by Julia Cameron, “The Road Less Traveled,” by Scott Peck, “The Creative Habit” by Twyla Tharp, and others. Learn to know and improve yourself.
• Reads acting books by well known teachers and techniques, such as “Respect for Acting,” “The Meisner Technique,” “The Method,” Harold Clurman, and biographies on their favorite actors, etc..
• Does something outside of acting to supplement working on their instrument: yoga, voice class, dance, Martial Arts, singing, stand-up comedy, etc..
• Keeps a journal to reflect on Self. Has some form of spiritual practice, prayer, meditation, religion, etc.

Intermediate Actor: (2-3 years)
• Takes a class at least once a week.
• Has two monologues prepared.
• Has 6 -12 scenes that have been completed.
• Involved in a theater situation where there are audition possibilities, play readings, and productions.
• Has a good headshot.
• Is building a resume of experience. Plays, student films, videos, non-union projects, web series, or works with friends on camera.
• Reads the trades, signs up and has a knowledge of the casting services. Makes a practice of submitting for anything and everything.
• Auditions for everything, understudies, gets on stage as much as possible.
• Has or is seeking an agent or manager.
• Has taken a commercial workshop and has (or is seeking) a commercial agent, and auditions for commercials.
• Reads at least 2 plays per month.
• Sees at least 1 play per month.
• Sees 3-4 movies per month.
• Works on ways to get tape on themselves, either by a project already worked on or self-produced.
• Networks in showcases, theater, scene nights, play readings, and projects that can “put them out there” to be seen and gain experience.
• Works on getting featured and co-starring roles in television and film.
• Is working on or has gotten in the unions, SAG-AFTRA, and maybe EQUITY.
• Has a good resume for gaining work and representation.

Advanced Actor (5 years +)
• Has a great headshot and solid resume.
• Takes a class and/or is working on a job.
• Performs in 2 – 3 plays a year
• Has several current and good TV credits.
• Has been in several films (union or non-union).
• Has good tape.
• Has a good relationship with their agent and/or manager, and communicates on a weekly basis.
• Participates in a theater where they can audition, perform, do play readings, showcases, scene nights and “work out.”
• Has a database of casting directors that they know, auditioned for, or worked for, and stays in touch on a regular basis (post cards, notes, stop-ins, Facebook, etc.).
• Knows every prime time show and who casts them. Knows every show they are “right for” and gets seen by those shows’ casting directors.
• Has several projects they are working on on the side (screenplay, play, putting together projects for themselves, pitching ideas, etc.).

Other Paths
Some people are carving their own way and aren’t interested in conventional routes.
• Writer, producer, actor. Works on their own project, not interested or passionate about an agent, and the general route of auditioning for parts in TV, film and theater. Wants to do “their own thing.”
• Starts a production company and does their own projects.
• Buys a camera and makes their own film or documentary.
• Runs or is active in a theater company and expresses their art there.
• Belongs to a cooperative and creates with these people – theater, film, etc..
• Crosses over from another aspect of the business – makes contacts and “gets in” that way. (ex., stand up comedians, dancers, musicians, stunt men, writer/actor, improv troupe, director/actor, producer/actor, works at casting office, works at a production company, friend or family member is in the business and hires them.)
• Writes a one-person show or a script to showcase themselves – film, theater, series idea, etc.
• These people may never pursue an agent or have to audition.

Where do you fit in here? Use this a guide. There are many more items in each category, like having a coach, a team, etc.. For now, this is an overview. The length of time it takes you is not as important as making sure you’ve hit all the levels. This gives you another opportunity to do a self evaluation, and maybe a chance to fill in the gaps. All the best to you on your creative journey.

Subject: April Fools
We announce the winner on Friday, April 4

April Fool's Day www.nohoartsdistrict.com

So how did April Fool’s Day start? That’s tricky, too.

Way back in the day, folks celebrated New Year’s Day up until April 1, close to the spring equinox. But in 1582, Pope Gregory XIII replaced the old Julian Calendar with the Gregorian Calendar. The new calendar made January 1 New Year’s Day not April 1. According to a popular story telling, many people refused to celebrate the new date or they never heard about the date change, all the while still celebrating New Year’s Day on April 1. Well, people began to tease these “April Fools” and thus the name.

We may never know the exact origins of this popular holiday but we can guess that it has something to do with spring, a time of renewal and happiness with lots of celebration.

Here’s a great video from explaining the background of April Fools.

Pet District – Shamrock Shake Quake Creates More Strays in Los Angeles

pet1

We all felt it. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day is the day all of Los Angeles woke up at the same time, including pets! Most of us were still in bed and simply opened our eyes with a blank stare, processing what was happening while holding our breaths. That’s not exactly the same reaction our pets had!

One of my closest friends has a Siamese cat, “Boots”, who she described as flying through the air and through her open window! (Thank goodness the screen broke his fall!) Unfortunately, Boots and many other panicked pets were lost during the quake, which caused a slight influx of stray animals at our local shelters.

pet2

Not only did our house pets get rumbled from their beds, many strays were shaken from their comfort areas, too. Because of this, many shelters, particularly the East Valley Animal Shelter in Van Nuys, received a higher amount of animals following the quake.

What better time to foster and adopt than now? I visited the East Valley Animal Shelter shortly after the quake, and I fell in love! I noticed there were many pets that clearly must have owners, looking sad and lonely, and missing mom or dad. The new environment is stressful enough, but add to that the recent quake and the unrecognizable faces they encounter while lost from home – it’s heartbreaking! If I could have taken all the pets home, I would have!

pet3

The animals are in excellent care at the shelter, but I have a soft spot for those kiddos, and just wish more of us could get out there and take them out to play or find them homes. Here’s where I come in!

Is your heart melting yet? The East Valley Animal Shelter has a quick and simple process for adoption. In addition to that, they provide each animal with all the care they need prior to joining its new family. Spay and neuter surgeries, microchip identification, vaccinations and medical care/information are all included! They have play areas where a staff member or volunteer takes dogs to roam throughout the day. The facility is clean and kept up. However, even with as many cells that the shelter has to accommodate the animals, there are always so many that the facility is overloaded. If you’re not ready to adopt, doing your part by fostering could help greatly! Just visit the shelter one time, and I promise you, you’ll fall in love! By the way, look at these adorable puppies!

I was so moved by my visit to this shelter, I want to feature adoptable pets in each article. These puppies are both male, their sister in a different cell. They are 8 week old multicolored Chihuahua/Dachshund cuties! Each animal is different, but my first dog was this same breed, and she had the BEST personality in the world – just saying! I hope I’ve motivated some of you to at least visit! And don’t worry, Boots made it back home safely.

Gotta Dance – Training the Whole Dancer – Health & Wellness come to CalArts

Photo 1 Title

The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) held an inaugural Dance and Wellness Intensive on March 20 and 21 on its campus in Valencia. The intensive was curated by the School of Dance administrators and faculty to provide their students with exposure to performing arts health professionals and wellness experts to compliment and balance the high level of training offered in technique, performance, choreography, and production. When I got the request to teach for the intensive, I was so excited to hear that my alma mater was joining the wellness wave and providing students with access to dancer health resources that I knew I had to cover the event for NoHoArtsDistrict.com.

Photo 2 Peer Massage

The two days offered 31 workshops and lectures to replace the normally scheduled curriculum for its roughly 100 undergraduate and graduate students. Several therapeutic and rehabilitative modalities were represented with lectures on physical therapy and injury prevention and treatment from the Dance Medicine experts at Evergreen Physical Therapy Specialists; hands-on therapeutic touch workshops led by yours truly, representing my practice NewPath Wellness; and MELT Method for full body self-care.

Photo 3 CI Training

Body awareness and conditioning classes were held by Donna Krasnow, introducing students to her C-I Training; Billy Gill and Nichol Chase offered yoga each morning; and I offered a Movement Lab workshop to facilitate students in building a balanced and effective warm-up.

Photo 4 Yoga

Psychological and emotional health were addressed by CalArts’ Melissa Shepherd who spoke about burnout; Bob Sharits of Action Family Counseling who spoke about substance use; and Lesli A. Johnson who led a workshop on mindfulness practices. To round out the offerings, Planned Parenthood presented on sexual health and Dr. Dan Griffin of Pure Wellness Center held information sessions on nutrition.

Photo 5 Burnout

The students were very excited about the full schedule and were able to choose which classes they wanted to take. Many expressed that the different lectures and workshops offered them information that they had been seeking, either out of curiosity or necessity.

Photo 6 Substance Use

Stephan Koplowitz, Dean of the Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance, stated, “I think the benefit of our Wellness Intensive is quite simple – it gave everyone a chance to pause, reflect, take stock, and truly be mindful of the choices we are making in our lives, choices that effect both our emotional and physical well-being. I think gaining the tools of being more “mindful” of our health is truly a key ingredient to sustaining an art practice that is more balanced and will contribute to allowing more pleasure and satisfaction and help us meet the challenges and pressures of today’s world.” I absolutely agree and feel that we are experiencing a cultural shift toward considering the “whole” person. The more we demand of ourselves artistically, the more we must incorporate resources and tools that serve us holistically. Knowing what those are and where to access them is crucial.

Photo 7 Yoga

Personal health advocacy in the performing arts is gaining ground. Organizations and institutions like this one are incorporating curriculum and special events that expose students to wellness practices. For the individual free-lance and pre-professional artist, it is up to you to seek practitioners that understand the demands of your field and utilize tools to bring balance to not only how much you give, but also receive. Pain, reorganization, stress, time management, burnout, cross-training, prevention, rehabilitation, recuperation, and exertion are all components of every artist’s career arc. How we face and encounter each of these elements determines not only the quality of what we can create, but the quantity of how much we can produce. The duration of your career can be extended greatly by having a balanced approach to your health. The culture of grinning and bearing it is being replaced by gratification and self-growth. What choices are you making to ensure your own success?

It was my pleasure to work with the CalArts dance students and staff!

First Baptist Church of North Hollywood Turns 87

We are proud of our local NoHo achievements and milestones. Congratulations First Baptist Church of North Hollywood for 87 years in NoHo!

First Baptist Church of North Hollywood Turns 87 www.nohoartsdistrict.com

I hear that the First Baptist Church of North Hollywood will be celebrating 87 years at Fair and Ostego.
Yes, we just marked our 87th anniversary on February 23. The church started officially in 1927, and met at several local theaters in the neighborhood (which at that time was called Lankershim). In 1930 the congregation purchased this corner property for a place to worship and as a base for ministry.

How is the church this great anniversary?
As we look back and look around we find many good things to celebrate. The church anniversary gives us a great opportunity to see some of the ways that God’s story is being written in ours! We give thanks for continuing ministries, new developments in outreach to our neighbors and spiritual growth within the congregation. Our theme for the anniversary was “Generations of Faith and Mission.” God has called us together as a multi-generational, multi-ethnic congregation; the Generations theme helps us honor that great purpose that God is working out.

Tell us more about your church services/programs?
Our worship is joyful and exuberant and provides us opportunities to connect with God in praise, prayer and scripture and with one another in fellowship and support. We seek to show the love of Christ to everyone who comes through our doors, and newcomers are welcomed warmly. Preaching unfolds theteaching of the Bible and its relevance to our daily experience. We emphasize the good news of God’s grace in Christ, and his empowering presence with us in all the changes of life. Music, drama and other worship arts are prominent, reflective of the people of our congregation and our NoHo community. We have choirs for adults, teens and children, drama ministry, and upcoming dance ministry, with rehearsals all through the week. Discipleship, or following Jesus, is a core part of our existence as a church, and a key component of this is learning the Bible. We offer Sunday School classes, midweek Bible studies, a men’s Bible study on Saturday morning, and an extensive Children’s Church ministry that brings the Word home to our young people in a powerful way.

Fellowship, or caring for one another in Christ, is another core part of our church. We have dynamic ministries with teens, children, women, married couples, men, and a growing singles ministry. All of these help us to be deeply rooted in God in every season of life. Our congregation is huge on supporting one another by prayer and expressions of help and encouragement.

Outreach is another core part of who we are. We devote a significant amount of attention to helping our neighbors in need. We have a weekly food pantry on Tuesdays and a monthly community luncheon on third Sundays. On Tuesday mornings the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission is here to provide showers and changes of clothes for our homeless neighbors, and afterward we have Bible study and a hot meal with these neighbors. For many years we have hosted an AA meeting on Thursdays at 8pm. We give enthusiastically to American Baptist missions and other mission efforts. We cultivate the awareness the Bible gives us that “we are blessed to be a blessing to others.”

First Baptist Church of North Hollywood Turns 87 www.nohoartsdistrict.com

In many ways we leverage our impact in God’s world through significant community partnerships. Three organizations started by members of our church provide us amazing opportunities to share in God’s work and extend his good gifts to others. Operation Love Ministries, Inc., serves the spiritual and physical needs of needy persons here in North Hollywood and on skid row; their global ministry includes building a trade school in Leogane, Haiti. Weekdays we open our doors to the afterschool programs of Hands for Hope, and we’ve been blessed many times over through this partnership of more than ten years. Dennis Rowe Entertainment, also based here, produces original gospel-themed musical plays that have involved many within the congregation and from all over the performing arts community. We also take part in the North Hollywood Church Alliance and look forward to hosting this year’s annual Good Friday evening service. These community partnerships are an addition to and expansion of the church’s own ministries of outreach, creative arts and caring. Since June we have shared our facilities with Miniserios Nuevo Vivir, a vibrant, growing congregation, and we are enjoying this partnership immensely. They are an inspiring and helpful presence in our lives, and are a key part of significant improvements in the property.

Tell us about your background prior to coming to First Baptist Church of North Hollywood.
My wife, Kathy, and I were married just a few years before I first came to the church in 1988 as Associate Pastor. Then in 1992 I was privileged to be called as Pastor. Before coming here I worked all kinds of jobs while attending seminary, and served as a youth pastor for a church in Van Nuys. I’ve enjoyed living in southern California most of my life.

What days/times do you have services?
On Sundays we have Bible classes at 9am and worship at 10:30am. Wednesdays we have Bible study and prayer gatherings at 7pm. Our church choirs and other ministry groups meet on other weeknights. Our sister congregation sharing the facilities, Nuevo Vivir, worships in Spanish on Sundays at 3pm and Wednesdays at 7:30pm, and has youth service in English on Fridays at 7:30pm.

If a person wants to get involved with the church who do they contact?
They could call our church office, 818 763 4356, email us at firstbaptistnoho@sbcglobal.net, or email me directly at ItsDaRev@aol.com (apparently I am one of the last AOL customers!). Our website www.fbcnoho.com and Facebook page are, well, may I just say that they are under review and rebuilding. We look forward to both of these being active and effective soon!

Why did you choose the NoHo Arts District as the home for the awards show?
(answered by Susan Bernhardt, Producing Partner, Indie Series Awards)
SB: When shopping for a venue to bring the Indie Series Awards out to Los Angeles (the previous four years they were held in New York City), I was literally drawn to NoHo and the vibe of the area. The El Portal Theatre was the perfect choice to host the event, and The Federal Bar next door is the ideal location for our after party. Couple that with the new Holiday Day Inn Express that just opened, and we have the exact combination we needed to accommodate the many people traveling from all over the country (and the world) to attend. We are absolutely thrilled with all the venues that are working with us to bring ISA5 to the Los Angeles area!

Can you describe the nomination and voting process? (answered by Roger Newcomb, founder of the Indie Series Awards)
RN: An all-time high number of web series submitted this year. They were all reviewed and scored by the We Love Soaps and Indie Series Network internal editorial and production team who handpicked 6 nominees for each of the 26 categories. The final round of judging was determined by an industry panel of experts who ranked the nominees in each category. It was very important to us that anyone involved in the process really watch and appreciate these shows and judge them fairly.

Do you have advice for what makes a successful web series? Any advice for aspiring directors? (answered by Susan Bernhardt, Producing Partner, Indie Series Awards)
SB: As a New Media Producer myself (I’ve produced 3 seasons of the multi-award winning teen drama, Miss Behave, and have a new Zom-Com coming out next month called Acting Dead), the best advice I have for aspiring filmmakers is do it for the love, not for the money. As much as we like to think there is a back-end income to be made, it just isn’t there yet. At the same time, making a project for the sheer passion and creativity that goes along with it, can be just as rewarding. Pool your resources – reach out to friends for help. But don’t skimp on the things that matter – first and foremost being, a good story and great sound. Barter for things such as food, locations, and take advantage of the SAG-AFTRA New Media contract which allows you to use professional actors. Who I might add, love the world of Indie Web Series’.

Movie Review – The Grand Budapest Hotel; Muppets Most Wanted

grand budapest hotel ver2

Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel is an engaging endeavor that combines old-fashioned elegance, zany antics, and elements of poignancy in telling the tale of a concierge, his new lobby boy, and an era of gentility endangered by the barbarians at the gate.

Perhaps I’m jumping ahead, which is not necessarily a cardinal sin when one discusses a Wes Anderson work. A semi-protracted opening establishes both the hotel’s fallen grandeur and the eventual narrator of the piece, the hotel’s enigmatic owner Zero (embodied in “the present” by F. Murray Abraham). Interviewed by the “author” (Jude Law), Zero recounts his early days at the majestic Grand Budapest Hotel (circa the early 1930s, in the fictional country of Zubrowka) under the tutelage of the concierge par excellence, Monsieur Gustave. As Gustave, Ralph Fiennes exhibits long-dormant comedic chops (I’m not forgetting Maid in Manhattan–believe me) as a man dedicated to the comfort of his guests, as well as the pleasures of certain, shall we say, venerable women of wealth. When a certain Madame D (Tilda Swinton) dies under mysterious circumstances, Gustave inherits a valuable painting, thus enraging her brutish family and setting in motion a chain of events where humor and horror walk hand in hand. Gustave is ultimately placed in a rather precarious position, one in which he slowly comes to rely on his acolyte Zero, as well as Zero’s love interest Agatha, and the eventual assistance of a coterie of concierges, none the least of whom are Anderson mainstays Bill Murray and Bob Balaban.

The mystery at the center isn’t exactly difficult to figure out, but that’s not what draws one to a Wes Anderson film; rather one wants to be transported to a visually dazzling, almost enchanted realm, populated by quirky characters brought to life by spirited performers, and here is where Anderson succeeds admirably. Edward Norton brings both zeal and compassion to his role as a sympathetic police inspector; Adrien Brody and Willem Defoe are triumphantly sinister and comic as an outraged would-be heir and his murderous henchman; F. Murray Abraham elevates the proceedings with his eloquent turn as the rueful “present” Zero, while newcomer Tony Revolori impresses as the young, naïve, and eventually resourceful Zero. Ralph Fiennes is perfection as Gustave, whether he is charming the ladies, keeping the staff in check, attempting to smoothtalk his way past (or flee from) representatives of the law, or forging a bond with the impressionable Zero. Buoyed throughout by a lightly classical score by Alexandre Desplat, The Grand Budapest Hotel succeeds as a witty, occasionally precious, ultimately bittersweet paean to a bygone era where civility ultimately became a casualty of the onset of war.

Muppets Most Wanted makes reference to their 2011 triumphant return The Muppets in a lively, infectious opening number in which the Muppets remind the viewer that the sequel is rarely as good as the first (although truth be told, there have been any number of Muppet movies, and none of them have been as good as 1981’s The Great Muppet Caper). This latest Muppet romp is fairly enjoyable, as the Muppets embark on a world tour, starting in that “comedy capital” berlin under the guidance of their new manager Dominic Badguy (Ricky Gervais). However, Badguy’s involvement is just a front for a nefarious plot to replace the earnest Kermit with his doppelganger, master criminal frog Constantine, and use the Muppets performances as a cover for breaking into the neighboring museums—with a larger, even more dastardly scheme to come. Will Kermit escape from his not-so-comfy cell in a Siberian gulag? Will Miss Piggy (and the rest of the Muppets) ever realize that the vaguely accented frog with stage fright is not really Kermit? Most importantly, will Miss Piggy finally get married to the froggy impostor who would be Kermit?

The fun of the Muppet movies lies in watching these beloved characters like Kermit, Miss Piggy and Fozzie interact not only with each other, but also the humans on display, mainly in the form of noted guest stars either contributing cameos or character turns—albeit with mixed results. Tina Fey is amusing as the prison guard (in Siberia no less!) with a huge crush on Kermit; Ty Burrell is generally funnier when he’s not trying to be—which unfortunately isn’t the case here; Ricky Gervais alternates between being entertaining and faintly embarrassed (as in his musical numbers); as fellow inmates who eventually befriend the hapless Kermit, Ray Liotta and Danny Trejo are up for anything, even A Chorus Line number. There are some funny gags, a number of good jokes, and some touching moments reflecting on the nature of friendship. While Muppets Most Wanted is certainly not the best of the batch, it’s worth a visit—you and the kids should enjoy it.

NoHo Does Comics, Meet Fanboy Comics

Fanboy Comics – The Mecca of Geek?

North Hollywood is only as fabulous as its people. This should be the NoHo motto. The NoHo Arts District dot com team had the chance to chat with Barbra Dillon, one of the founders of the North Hollywood-based Fanboy Comics, an online mecca of all things “GEEK.” We are particularly thrilled to meet Barbra, a local, woman-co-owned business and a comic business on top of that. So gone are the days of comics being a male-oriented industry? We think it’s heading that way as more and more women are finding the joy of comics. So NoHo, meet Barbra and give Fanboy Comics a big East Valley welcome!

So what exactly is Fanboy Comics?
BD: Fanboy Comics (FBC) is an online conglomerate of geek media, providing its readers with daily reviews, interviews, and podcasts that span the pop culture spectrum. In 2011, FBC added independent comic book publisher to its credits, when it published its first graphic novel, Something Animal. The company’s second graphic novel, Identity Thief, was released in September 2012, and its latest graphic novel, The Arcs, is now available.

Why did you start the site?
BD: FBC was initiated in 2010 when my colleagues (Bryant Dillon and Sam Rhodes) and I wanted to publish our first graphic novel, Something Animal. We had so many ideas for creating our own comics and graphic novels, but we also relished the idea of providing an outlet for other independent creators to publish their work. There are so many talented indie creators who simply need an open and positive venue for their projects to be viewed, and we hope that Fanboy Comics provides that opportunity.

Fanboy Comics North Hollywood, www.nohoartsdistrict.com

When most people think of comics they think “boy hobby,” however inaccurate and absurd that may sound. How did you become a fan of comics?
BD: I first became aware of comic books from my older brother, as well as through the newsstand that my father owned. The newsstand had one of those old, metal spin racks that held single-issue comic books, mostly consisting of Archie, The X-Men, and Barbie comic books. For some reason, the X-Men comics always intrigued me the most, which then led to X-Men: The Animated Series, ultimately opening my eyes to a whole world (and various mediums) of exciting entertainment. Later in life, my husband greatly expanded my understanding of all things comic books, which made me the fangirl that I am today.

What is Fanboy Publishing?
BD: As an independent publisher, Fanboy Comics seeks to provide an outlet for up-and-coming artists and writers with a desire to create new works and media. By facilitating in-house collaborations and providing support and empowerment, FBC hopes to enable the production of professional and marketable creator-owned works.

Tell more about your graphic novels.
BD: We have released three graphic novels to date, all of which may be found through the Fanboy Comics Online Store and in several comic book shops throughout Southern California.

The Arcs is an epic and gritty graphic novel written by Michael D. Poisson and featuring the artwork of Matt Jacobs. The story details the seven Archangels of Heaven as they battle the demons of Hell and their own faith in God.

Something Animal is an 80-page graphic novel written by Bryant Dillon and Sam Rhodes, with vivid, full-color art by Robert Burrows. Created as a response to the current romantic view of the vampire motif, Something Animal is a dark and gritty tale of psychological terror that is sure to satisfy any fan of the horror genre.

Identity Thief is a suspenseful graphic novel written by Bryant Dillon and featuring over 60 pages of original art by Meaghan O’Keefe. Reminiscent of the horrific tales of The Twilight Zone or Creepshow, this thriller will allow fans to discover the monster lurking in Fanboy Comics’ closet!

What are ‘The Katniss Chronicles’?
BD: Separate from our work with Fanboy Comics, my colleagues and I (along with Tony Caballero) have created an audio drama called The Katniss Chronicles. TKC is an unofficial audio drama adaptation of The Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins. Much like the old radio shows of the ‘30s and ‘40s, it consists of a full cast of talented actors, a beautiful score created by Sam Cushion, and amazing sound effects for a full listening experience. We adore The Hunger Games books by Suzanne Collins and hope that the series will both entertain audiences and encourage people (of all ages) to read the books, as well.

My colleagues and I have been working on the project from 2-3 years, and we have already released the adaptations of the first two books in the series, totaling nearly 40 episodes. All of the episodes are available for free download through iTunes, as well as through our website (www.thekatnisschronicles.com). The final installment of the audio drama will be released starting in June of 2014.

Katniss Chronicles Fanboy Comics www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Tell us a bit about the other women who contribute to the Fanboy site.
BD: We have an amazingly talented and dedicated group of staff members and contributors at Fanboy Comics, which include quite a large number of women. Staff members Kristine Chester and Rebecca Lear have not only provided vast amounts of reviews for our news wing, they have also shared their expertise in Young Adult literature, gaming, photography, and other areas that have both enlightened and entertained our readers. In addition, our female contributors are well versed and incredibly articulate, providing insightful reviews of everything from the latest films and TV shows to comic books and novels.

I also feel that it is important to note that Fanboy Comics is very supportive of the LGBT community, and we are very honored to have several LGBT staff members, contributors, writers, and artists in our organization. We strive to make Fanboy Comics a place that all creators and fans can feel welcome to create, share, and enjoy art (and all things geeky!) in all forms.

What are some of your personal favorite comics?
BD: I will voraciously read everything written by Brian K. Vaughan (Saga, Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina, The Private Eye, etc.). I also love a lot of the series published by Dark Horse Comics, including the recently released Serenity: Leaves on the Wind, as well as classics like Watchmen.

Can you tell us some of the popular comics for both serious comic fans and newbies, folks who know absolutely nothing about comics?
BD: The wonderful thing about comic books is that there is something for everyone! At Fanboy Comics, we hope to offer readers (those both new to comic books and seasoned fans) a chance to find something that interests them. For that reason, we review and promote comic books (and other projects within the geek genre) that range from independent to professional and pertaining to a wide variety of interests. It can be daunting and overwhelming to jump into the comic book medium, if you are unfamiliar with where to begin. For that reason, I would encourage readers to visit our website and engage our staff members and contributors for recommendations. At the same time, we hope to challenge our veteran comic book readers with new and exciting titles.

(I could go on forever with recommendations. Interested readers may find me on Twitter, @barbrajdillon, if they would like any specific ideas!)

Fanboy Comics North Hollywood NoHo Arts District, www.nohoartsdistrict.comAre there any upcoming project or events in the area or L.A. you’ll be attending?
BD: We have a few projects in the works that are scheduled to release later this year; however, I’ll have to keep those under wraps for the time being. Readers should stay tuned to www.fanboycomics.net, though, for further details.

The Fanboy Comics crew will be exhibiting at WonderCon Anaheim (Table SP-061) from April 18-20th, and we will also have some exciting announcements next month regarding our upcoming titles.
