4 Underrated Albums from 2014

Every year the music market gets more and more oversaturated with tons of new music and we are inundated with so much, dare I say, “crap” that it becomes easy to miss the real music gems that are waiting to be discovered. Now this by no means is a comprehensive list but a short compiling of a few records that are worth revisiting before moving into 2015. So get all those iTunes gift cards you got as stocking stuffers this year and head over to iTunes and support good music!

Colony House – When I Was Younger

image1

Up and coming indie rock trio Colony House(two of which are brothers) have been playing together since 2009. Their debut album “When I Was Younger” is laden with infectious melodies and candid lyrics, pulling from such influences as “The Strokes”, “Vampire Weekend” and even “The Police”. The album reminisces on life’s beauty, youthful naïveté and wonder and worriment about the future. Written to become the dialog inside your head and the soundtrack of your heart.

image6 1

“When I Was Younger” asks the questions pertaining to love and regret, the memories of forgotten dreams and the acquiescence that comes along with growing up. With its straight-forward rock edge coupled with pop sensibilities it’s surprising that this record didn’t go farther this year. But like every child wanting to grow up, they’re just waiting for their time to come.

Matrimony – Montibello Memories

matrimony-album

When it comes to music it seems that blood runs thicker than water. From “The Everly Brothers”, to “Donny & Marie”, & “The Jackson 5”, to modern day groups like “Eisley” ,”Kings of Leon”, and “Haim”, family bands have always had a unique place in the American music tradition. Now meet Matrimony: A rootsy folk band with deep southern soul and soaring harmonies that might even give you chills at times. These North Carolina natives comprise of husband and wife duo(Jimmy & Ashlee Brown), two brothers(Jordan & C.J. Hardee; Ashlee being their sister). Their latest album Montibello Memories is an ode to the childhood home where the Hardee kids grew up, making this a personal project in many ways.

image1 3

From beginning to end the album is an intimate look into the pain and struggle of love, each song a glimpse into another room of their beloved Montibello home. Songs like “Southern Skies” pay homage to their roots, blending banjo infused folk rock with a tinge of southern gospel, while emotive piano driven “Giant” bleeds resilience and triumph. In and throughout “Montibello Memories” you feel a resolve and commitment to keep going when it comes to fighting for what you love most. Whether hometown, family or a troubled relationship it’s all love to Matrimony and worth singing about each step of the way.

Childish Gambino – STN MTN / Kauai

gambino-album

Donald Glover doesn’t quite fit into any Hip-Hop mold you put him in. He’s a writer(30 Rock), turned actor(starred on NBC sitcom Community) and now turned rapper known as “Childish Gambino”. His quirk and uniqueness rings similar to a young Andre 3000 from Outkast. His brand of alternative Hip-Hop vacillates between standard rapper bravado and dark introspection. His latest and lesser known EP “Kauai” comes off the heels of his very successful second album “Because of the Internet” featuring radio hit “3005”. “Kauai” is the second half to a mixtape(STN MTN, stands for “Stone Mountain”) that Gambino released for free and both projects are considered dual sides of the same album. (Proceeds from the sale of Kauai go to help preserve Kauai Island).

gambino

Gambino seems to switch things up this time around, exploring sonically with pop synth and groove, as well as trying his hand at singing more on tracks like “Sober” and “Pop Thieves”, even adding a spoken word piece by actor turned rapper Jaden Smith on “Late Night in Kauai”. All in all this project is a must have from 2014 that will never disappoint. One thing is clear however, Childish Gambino is the dark horse of Hip-Hop. No one quite knows what to do with him or where he fits. And that seems to be just the way he likes it.

Brooke Fraser – Brutal Romantic

brooke-frasier-album

New Zealand singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser recently released “Brutal Romantic”. She leaves behind the pop folk vibe of her previous albums and has embraced a darker electro-pop feel for her third studio project. Vocally her smooth textured tone and delicate melodies are what pulls you in, but it’s her climatic writing that truly sets her apart. Standout track “Psychosocial” unmasks the twistsed psyche behind compulsory social media stalking, dealing a sharp blow to internet voyeurism in our day and age.

brooke-frasier

As an overseas artist(she’s done platinum in New Zealand) she hasn’t quite blown up stateside but her newest endeavor demonstrates her seriousness to be seen as a break-out artist and producer. Brooke Fraser is a master wordsmith and a bold risk taker worth noting and looking out for. She is not afraid to do what she wants, fully knowing that she will make you like it later.

Film Festival Flix Katherine Randolph ADULTHOOD www.nohoartsdistrict.com

ADULTHOOD, written and directed by Katherine Randolph, is an ensemble comedy about a group of friends on the brink of their thirties, clumsily grappling with impending adulthood, finding love and humor amid the chaos of life.

It’s been ten years since college, and USC buddies Chris, Mark, Walt, and Jake have seen less and less of each other. But when war journalist Mark misses a flight connection and finds himself in Los Angeles for the night, he rounds up the group for a barbeque that re-ignites friendship and romance.

When Mark goes missing the following week while on assignment in Pakistan, each of the friends begin to question their choices, relationships and ultimately the lives they’re living. Some bonds break under the pressure of examination, while others grow stronger as they cast aside their ideas about themselves and each other. While waiting for news of Mark, they agree to escort the dying Uncle Al to Palm Springs, where he believes an alien spaceship is coming to pick him up. The trip inevitably spins out of control as the fabric of little white lies that hold their lives together starts to weaken, forcing them to change and confront their fear of adulthood.

It’s Never Too Late to Make A New Year’s Resolution

NoHo Seniors Share Their Goals and Resolutions For 2015

NoHo Senior Arts Colony www.nohoartsdistrict.com

As the merriment of December comes to a close and the New Year swiftly approaches, many of us will begin to reflect on the upcoming year and what we hope to accomplish.

These goals and resolutions certainly vary among individuals, and range from personal to professional, but one thing always remains the same – These New Year’s resolutions represent a clean slate, an endless stream of possibilities, and a brief insight into what our futures can potentially hold.

At the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments, many of the residents are eager for the possibilities the New Year will offer and have set the bar high with their 2015 resolutions.

Caroline McElroy, a resident of the community and one of the artists featured in the community’s latest professional art exhibition, plans on taking her artwork to new heights in 2015.

After a recent trip Paris, McElroy was inspired by the art, culture and beauty of the city. She traveled throughout the city with friend and fellow resident Angela McEwan, soaking up every ounce of what this spectacular place has to offer.

During this trip, McElroy was also able to establish a contact at one of the local museums. Now back in the states, her New Year’s resolution is to not let this contact go to waste, and has dreams of taking her artwork to Paris.

When we caught up with McElroy she explained, “It’s easy to let opportunities go, and not follow through, but the New Year is a perfect time to get back on track and set goals for yourself.”

“And that’s exactly what I’m doing. I am seizing this opportunity and making my dreams come true.”

McElroy is not the only one who has big goals for 2015, NoHo Senior Arts Colony residents Marc Mantell and Vicki Finn, have made their own goals, both striving to stay healthy and active in 2015.

Mantell, who has been a resident of the NoHo Senior Arts Colony since its opening, says he’s increased his daily physical and social activities tremendously since moving into the community, and spends his time interacting with friends and fellow residents. He plans to continue down this new path in 2015 enjoying the many classes that the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments has to offer.

Vicki Finn, who relocated to this community from Florida, also has plans to stay healthy and active in 2015. She plans on adopting a healthier diet, and also kicking her habit of staying up late.

And still another NoHo Senior Arts Colony resident, Jacqueline Benoit, has set a very different and unique resolution for 2015 – to live simpler.

“I am going to live a lot lighter and clear all the debris out of my life,” Benoit explained. “Many of us tend to carry around a lot of material things that we simply don’t need, and that ultimately clutter our lives.” Benoit plans to focus on the important things in life, and will donate many of her clothes to a local woman’s shelter.

She also has goals of booking more auditions in 2015. The 84 year old actress is set to appear in the upcoming movie “Mall Cop 2,” and has already worked on Jimmy Kimmel Live and appeared in the TV show “Two Broke Girls” in the past. Benoit plans on continuing this acting streak in 2015, with the goal of booking additional parts.

A lot can be learned from our local seniors at the NoHo Senior Arts Colony Apartments, with the simple truth being that you’re never too old to make resolutions. Furthermore, it’s not the specific resolutions themselves that are important, but rather it’s the hope and promise for the future that they bring. These resolutions give all of us a brief insight into what our futures can potentially hold, and what we can accomplish when we really put our minds to it.

These residents represent that hope, and that it’s never too late to start chasing your dreams and making goals for the future.

The Group Rep Gives Back

Our NoHo Theatre, The Group Rep, Gives Back

The Group Rep Gives Back www.nohoartsdistrict.com

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, especially for the Group Rep at the Lonny Chapman Theatre, which for more than three decades has provided holiday cheer for children-in-need.

In the beginning, a merry band of eleven actors, directors, writers and producers, with Santa in tow, would visit various group foster homes, play games with the kids, put on a show, and bring a gift for each child. The event has grown over the years, as the holiday tradition continued and the need grew, the Group Rep moved the Kids Holiday Party to their theatre. Today, many company members serve as volunteers and performers.

The Group Rep Gives Back www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The theatre is decked out for the holiday festivities. This year’s guests were entertained with skits, songs, a play written especially for them, and a hot lunch was served up by the GRT company members. The grand finale included the arrival of Santa with a gift selected for each young guest.

This year, in addition to contributions from GRT members’ family and friends, Christine Holmes and fellow co-workers of the Turner Entertainment Network Original Programming Group and the Rotary Club of North Hollywood have made the Holiday Kids Party their charity for toy donations.

Longtime GRT members Irene Chapman and Janet Wood, who have been co-chairs of the Holiday Kids Party for 15 years, organized the event with the help of Liza Standish – their right hand person in choosing the right gifts for each kid.

“As the date approaches,” past Board President Janet Wood explained, “The company members wrap the gifts and decorate the theater from stem to stern. On the day of the event, the Helper elves (our company members) come in holiday costumes to extend the holiday spirit and host the day. For many of these children, this is their first experience of live theater. These children live in foster care facilities (not individual foster care homes) and most will stay there until they are 18 years old. We have been able to watch some of these kids grow up and help the little ones in their group. All in all, it is a terrific, heartwarming day!”

The Group Rep Gives Back www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The groups of children’s charities change each year; most are foster group homes, but in years past, it has also included a group of children battling cancer. This year, guest organizations included group homes Five Acres, Hathaway/Sycamores, Hillsides, Penny Lane, and Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services.

“Each year always brings added precious memorable moments,” said event co-chair, Irene Chapman. A few years ago the “We Can” cancer group took part in the event, and there was one five-year-old boy who was sheer joy to behold. Even though his condition was tenuous, he participated well in all that we presented and with great enthusiasm. His gentle and humble demeanor affected us all. It stirs and warms the heart.”

As 2014 comes to an end, the company members of the Group Rep hope that they have made the holiday better for some children in need. Hosting the party, makes the holidays better for the members of the Group Rep. And, to paraphrase what Janet Wood said earlier, “All in all, it was a terrific, heartwarming day!”

STEREO LOVE Rock And Roll Family

I met STEREO LOVE during a show at Universal Bar & Grill and was quickly taken with their music;

Edgy lead guitar, strong vocals, powerhouse drums and metal bass riffs. I heard an array of musical influences ranging from Lita Ford and Joan Jett to The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Motley Crue.

Their original song ‘What Do You Want’ is my personal favorite.

STEREO LOVE is a family music trio that simply loves to rock n’ roll. The band members are 16 year old Jewel Steele on lead vocals and guitar. 17 year old Lula Steele is on bass and back-up vocals. Their dad, Judd Steele is on drums.

Jewel picked up the guitar at age 9 and also plays the violin and drums. She began performing in public during the summer of 2010 as a street musician. Jewel Steele is endorsed by Daisy Rock Girl Guitars.

Lula Steele picked up the bass guitar when she was 10 years old. Influenced by her jazz musician Grandfather, she also plays Upright Bass and was the only female bass player in her middle school orchestra. Lula is endorsed by Daisy Rock Girl Guitars.

Judd Steele brings years of playing drums to the table. Judd has toured for the troops, playing in Afghanistan and other destinations around the world. Judd was looking for a fun, family activity to do together, and being a rock and roll dad, decided to start a band with his two daughters.

STEREO LOVE won ‘Hollywood Rocks’ at the Las Vegas Rocks Music Awards 2013 and was nominated in 2014. The band has played hundreds of live shows over the last four years including festivals, casinos, bars and schools.

Upcoming Shows for 2015:

Jane The Virgin: Immaculate Conception Strikes Again

If you thought the Virgin Mary was the only account of immaculate conception to be told, then you haven’t been watching the CW Network recently. Based on Venezuelan telenovela “Juana la Virgen,” comedy-drama “Jane The Virgin” follows a young pragmatic Latin woman (played by Gina Rodriguez) who makes a virginity vow at a young age. Unfortunately, Jane is accidentally artificially inseminated and impregnated with semen meant for someone else, thus the make believe story begins.

Jane the Virgin www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Jane lives at home with her eccentric family while they help her navigate what decisions to make. But advice in her household is often varying and many times conflicting. When Jane was a little girl, her deeply religious grandmother (Ivonne Coll) made her hold a white flower and then crumple it up, traumatically demonstrating that if she lost her virginity to a man before marriage then she could never get it back. But her morally loose mother (Andrea Navedo), who herself had her daughter at 16, has a different opinion about sex. She says, “the best way to get over a man is under a man.”

At first this family seems to center around the melodrama of their favorite telenovela they watch faithfully meanwhile Jane’s real life slowly turns into one. Things start to heat up when her detective boyfriend Michael (Brett Dier) starts to become jealous of her newfound chemistry with Rafael (Justin Baldoni), the father of her in-vitro child who himself is caught in a loveless marriage and also happens to be her boss. And if carrying his baby is not enough, Jane won’t face the fact that she is developing strong feelings for Rafael. Now if you think that’s too complex of a plot, just wait till you meet the plethora of over the top side characters that tend to pop in and out at any given moment.

Jane the Virgin proudly gives us all a glimpse of Latin culture and a kind family that we are not often shown on network television, let alone the CW network which is currently not known for diversity. But that seems to be changing. There is becoming a consistent theme of casting diversity this season with sitcoms like “Black-ish,” “Cristela,” and soon to be premiered “Fresh off The Boat,” helping to showcase multi-cultural parts of America that are still so foreign to so many of us. Notably, this series wrestles comedically with morality, family, and seems to promote pro-life values in a non-preachy relatable way.

Recently it garnered several surprise Golden Globe nominations for 2015 for lead actress Gina Rodriguez and the show itself is going head to head this year in the comedy category with favorites like “Girls” & “Orange is the New Black.” Ratings for the new show have not been extremely strong, but since the Globe nods there is renewed hope that it will make it to a second season.

Like the immaculate conception of the Virgin Mary, Jane The Virgin seems far-fetched and probably a hoax, yet something in you can’t quite discount it. Flying in the face of all reason, this show is everything you’d expect a telenovela or a prime time soap opera to be: overdramatic, sentimental and downright outlandish and that’s what gives it its undeniable charm. It’s unrealistic, yet somehow believable and even more so likeable. Here we have a young woman trying to find her own path in the middle of a mixed up, complicated story while trying to dream of a better tomorrow, and that’s something every one of us can readily relate to and want to believe for.

If you live in North Hollywood, you probably already know about the Magical Christmas Caroling Truck. If you don’t, now is the time to get to know this NoHo/Toluca Lake tradition. Every year since 1984 on Christmas Eve, the 62-foot tractor-trailer, adorned with magnificent Christmas scenes and thousands of sparkling lights, spreads Yuletide cheer in the neighboring east Valley communities. More than 200 singers and dancers, accompanied by a 20,000-watt sound system, serenade local residents with Christmas carols.

Once the Magical Christmas Caroling Truck is in NoHo or your neighborhood, you can tune into the music at FM 88.3 and listen in. If you live in the route area, come out on Christmas Eve and join in. If you don’t live on the route, print out the map of approximate locations and times, pack up the family in the car, find us and join in. Magical Christmas Caroling Truck Route Map www.nohoartsdistrict.com

http://www.christmascaroling.org/

The Magical Christmas Caroling Truck tradition was born Christmas Eve 1984 after a recording session, when 12 of the musicians and engineers were inspired to decorate an old dump truck with some twinkle lights and go Christmas caroling. Equipped with their drums, bass, keyboard, a few microphones and a lot of holiday spirit, they caroled the entire evening. The response from the 10-mile route was overwhelming and every Christmas Eve since, the carolers and the Truck have made their appearance in the same neighborhoods.

Donations – The Magical Christmas Truck is supported by all the people involved and the local community thru a local non-profit organization and all funds are directly used for the event expenses. Donations are even accepted from most of all the carolers and applied directly towards the costs of the event. Each year the event has just about covered its expenses, thanks to the generous donations from those who support it. In the past we have had donations of lumber to build the float, Christmas lights, Christmas hats, small teddy bears to give away, cookies to give away, speakers, generators, sound systems, radios, musicians, and on and on.

We think their description from their Facebook page sums up all the fun.

“Our carols range from “Silent Night” to rock ‘n roll versions of classic Christmas carols! Residents along the nine-mile route host friends and family at their homes in anticipation of the truck and Christmas Spirit that the truck brings. Characters such as Frosty the Snowman and Santa’s Little Helpers walk around in the crowd and hand out candy canes, wishing people a “Merry Christmas.” The holiday season is a great opportunity for us to touch the lives of people from every walk of life. We choose to spend this evening together to be a door of hope and blessing to those who may need encouragement, and to bring as much joy as we can to the community.”

“Bruce and Friends” Show at NoHo Senior Arts Colony

Meet the characters of artist David Kcenich in the “Bruce and Friends” Show

David Kcenich NoHo Senior Arts Colony www.nohoartsdistrict.com

UPDATE: There will be another public reception on  Saturday, January 24 from 4-6PM

The Gallery @ NoHoSAC is a contemporary space that is the perfect backdrop to display the work of our local visual artists. The gallery is located in the NoHo Senior Arts Colony and the space is shared with the award-winning Road Theatre Company, making it a “colony of arts.” The next show at the Gallery @NoHoSAC will feature the works of character artists/animator David Kcenich with a free opening reception on Tuesday, December 23 from 6-8PM.

WHAT: David Kcenich “Bruce and Friends” Show
WHERE: NoHo Senior Arts Colony. 10747 Magnolia Blvd, CA 91601
WHEN: Tuesday, December 23 from 6-8PM
ARTIST INFO: www.DMKartoonz.com

Meet artist David Kcenich, a character designer and animator with more than 24 years of industry experience.

“My decision to show my work came rather reluctantly. I tend to keep my work private and not on display. I did have a few pieces at a gallery in Laguna Beach but not a full gallery show. I always thought about showing my work but never felt like I had enough to hang in a gallery. After meeting with my dear friend, Amanda Talbot, who I worked with for years at Disney and is currently organizing shows for The Gallery at the NoHo Senior Arts Colony, I realized I had more than enough. She offered me a spot in the rotation for a show in March 2015. I said I could get enough pieces for that, then she called last week and said she had a December opening and here I am. She stopped by my place and helped me sort out my work. Having a gallery show is both extremely exciting and terrifying. Having my work on display for my friends and peers to view leaves me feeling vulnerable. This is my first show and I just hope people will take the time to view my work and really enjoy the Cartoon Show.

David Kcenich NoHo Senior Arts Colony www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The show details: I originally planned on showing a collection of my watercolor Illustrations and finished paintings. After meeting with Amanda and her impressed reactions towards my line work and my strips the plan shifted to my Cartoon and Comic Strip work. My show is called: “BRUCE & Friends.”

BRUCE is my alter ego and main character of the cast from the GANG in MY HEAD. He has been developing inside me for the last 30 years. I never submitted his comic strip ideas to syndicates because I am constantly adding new qualities to him. I will have on a collection of Original Strips (Sunday pages, Dailies and Single panel strips) on display at the show. The Friends portion will broken down in different sections: Illustrations (pen & ink/watercolor), Cartoons and Doodles (pen & ink, watercolor, pencil drawings), Political Cartoons (ink/colored pencil) and finally on display will be selected pages of my completed Cartoon Illustrated book: Has Anyone Seen My Valentine? (original inked line drawing with a Digital color version of the finished page matted). I will also have a finished version of the book at the gallery for the viewing public. I plan on having a sign-up sheet to pre order copies of the book. I hope to get it published. I will go the self-publish way if I get enough pre orders and do a limited run. I will also offer commissioned work on selected pieces if people are interested. I plan on having 35 total pieces (15 framed and 20 matted).

My dream project: I worked in animation on feature films and television projects as an Effects animator and Character animator for over 24 years. Working at the Walt Disney Animation Studio was a dream job as a profession. My personal dream is to become a syndicated Cartoonist ( to have “BRUCE” introduced to the syndicates and be published, that’s a dream) and have my own Cartoon books published. Finally to be recognized as a successful Cartoonist.

Advice to the aspiring Cartoonist: When I was at Disney working on Tarzan, I visited my family for the holidays in Pennsylvania. While I was there I was interviewed by the local newspaper, The Citizen’s Voice. They ran a story about me and later I was asked to come back in a few months to be the guest speaker at the Teacher of the Year awards. I flew back and I had to speak in front of business owners, education board members, teachers, my family and current students. I talked about my difficult journey from a small coal mining town to being an animator at Disney. So many people tried to talk me out of it but I had a dream. I turned to the table of students and my advice to them was: Do your best no matter what path you choose. If you pump gas for a living, be the best gas pumper there is. If you want to be a Cartoonist, believe in yourself. Follow your Dreams, because if you don’t have Dreams you will have nightmares.

“Bruce and Friends” Show at David Kcenich NoHo Senior Arts Colony www.nohoartsdistrict.com

I have been an animator, by profession, for over two decades but I will always call myself a CARTOONIST. Cartooning is an art form that I believe has been looked down upon by other artists. There is an impression that Cartoon artists and their work aren’t at the same level as fine artists. I was blessed with the opportunity to learn from such Cartoon and Comic art legends as Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Gene Colon, Charles Burns and Illustrator, Philip Burk while attending the School of Visuals Arts in NYC. I met and chatted with famous Cartoonists through the years. I have worked with talented artist at the studios I worked at and learned and developed artistically along the way. I have developed my own Cartoon style that I hope people will enjoy viewing at the gallery. I hope I can show that Cartoonists are real artists. I hope you will enjoy my CARTOON SHOW.”

Acting – Holiday time – A good time to contemplate

Well it’s December, the end of the year and a time to wind down 2014. A time to celebrate, and for many actors – take a break, visit family, and replenish. I think it’s a good opportunity to “marinate”, contemplate, vision, or simply step back and take inventory. We say at The Actors Workout Studio that we are in the business of “transforming actor’s lives, one at a time”. We believe in the “whole artist”, not only the skills, craft, and business of the actor, but “who each actor is”.

I have been heavily criticized by other acting teachers when I go there with an actor, asking them questions such as “who are you?” “what makes you tick?” “what is driving your choice and imagination?”

I am moved by two quotes I just read recently, “The more you like yourself, the less you are like anyone else, which makes you unique” That was by Walt Disney.

Another, “Real success is not on the stage, but off the stage as a human being, and how you get along with your fellow man.” That one Sammy Davis, Jr.

So I encourage my students to take a break during the holidays and think, ponder, re-evaluate, and yes, marinade in the process. Don’t set any goals, don’t try to do anything, just let it sit. Ask yourself – are you happy? Are you living your dream? Is what you’re doing working? What’s missing? Tune in to your body, spirit, and soul.

It’s also a good time to give, and give service. Actors are performing and we “give” ourselves when working. We give our hearts and souls to reveal characters and stories through our instruments. How can you give this season? As actors we sometimes need to get off ourselves and give to others. So I suggest you do something like that, give a gift to someone who least expects it, make someone smile, go out of your way to give some love to someone. Donate, serve, and give service to a worthy cause. It’s part of who we are. The business can be quite obsessive and consuming, take a break, celebrate, and discover yourself.
Happy Holidays

A Conversation with Writer, Director & Actor Black Robbins

A Sublime and Beautiful Success Story
A Conversation with Writer, Director & Actor Black Robbins

On December 16th, in a little-known world called the Internet, via Itunes and VOD, a film of super natural superiority will emerge. The Sublime and Beautiful, both written, directed and starring Blake Robbins (Oz, FlashForward, Sons of Anarchy), is a tragic tale of loss, grief and reckoning- following husband and wife David and Kelly Conrad after losing their children to a drunk driving accident.

The film, which had its world premier at Park City Utah’s Slamdance Film Festival- where it was nominated for Best Narrative Feature- explores the depths and ramifications of an uncompromising sense of loss, masquerading itself as anger. And Robbins so pointedly captures this complexity in his performance, breathing life into the father character while audiences watch as he slowly begins to unravel. I had the pleasure of speaking with this prolific director during a recent press event here in Los Angeles.

Sublime and Beautiful Poster

“I’ve always found myself drawn to films that dealt with meaning-of-life themes and grief,” he shared. “But more often than not, I would leave the theatre feeling like something was missing, or it didn’t resemble what my experiences were like.”

The experiences Robbins’ referring to would be the loss of his best friend Greg to a brain tumor at the slight age of 27, and almost losing his Aunt Jeannie to a drunk driving accident just six years prior. “There was definitely a loss of innocence because while most kids were just out having a great time, I had already watched Greg experience the final three years of his life, knowing his life was limited,” he said. “So you have a different kind of grief and different kinds of relationships when that happens. And it absolutely impacted me as a human being and as a creative artist.”

One of the impacts that watching his best friend die had on Robbins was it gave him a burning passion and appreciation for life. He went full throttle in his pursuit of an acting career, making significant strides and landing roles like “Tom Halpert” on the NBC’ hit show The Office, and his recurring role as “Dave Brass” on the strikingly original and critically acclaimed HBO series Oz. He’s also guest starred on the FX-hit Sons of Anarchy and he had his Broadway debut in Arthur Miller’s The Man Who Had All the Luck, opposite Chris O’Donnell, directed by Scott Ellis. So commitment and follow-through are his default settings, to say the least. And while working as an actor on set, he used the access to learn as much as he could about directing and writing and anything he could get close to, preparing himself for the leap in performance this next phase of his career would require.

“I was building my career as a young actor, and, simultaneously, always watching with a mind’s eye of a future filmmaker,” he commented. “So when it came time to put something down on paper, what kept itching at me was this idea of a family sideswiped by tragedy. I experienced the events of 911; I was living in NYC at the time, and it was very profound for me to be around that. And while I didn’t have any interest in dealing with that issue on a national level, I had this itch inside of me to deal with it on the family level.” Robbins also wanted to set the film in the Midwest, giving audiences a view of how grief, pain and loss can quickly consume a family living in Lawrence, Kansas, with a slightly scaled-down version of life, where family and community is everything.

“I wanted a family that would be accessible to the majority of this country who experience incredibly horrible things all the time,” he said. “And I didn’t want the creative forces pushing me in one direction or another, or having an agenda behind it like creating an Oscar-winning role, which sometimes happens with these movies. And the businessperson in me doesn’t knock that because I understand that, I just didn’t want to have to fight through that. I just wanted to tell a story where the central character is stuck in grief even though most people don’t love a character like that.”

That might be why Robbins places The Sublime and Beautiful under the “niche film” category. He’s not trying to be all things to all people, but to tell a story that will make the difference for those who have found themselves or someone they care about in similar situations. “The huge payoff for me is when people who have experienced enormous grief in their lives due to loss actually see the movie, and the response I get is that it’s so powerful and cathartic for them to experience the other side,” he said. “I get such gratitude from them for telling this version of the events. And they connect in a way that truly honors their experience. And I think that’s the best way to approach a niche film. It becomes a niche film because it’s not for everyone, but for the people who need it, it’s so important.”

Robbins kept the financing of the film niche too, turning to Kickstarter to raise the funds, and incorporating many of the locals in his film while shooting on location as to avoid having to shut businesses down. And it turns out that all his training in TV as an actor couldn’t have served him better when stepping up as a director. “Being a television actor, I just said, ‘Okay, a two-week shoot is going to cost me a third less than a three-week shoot. How can I create a two-week shoot out of this?’” he pondered. “Because in television, the hour-long shows shoot in 8 days. And they got about 55-60 pages. I’ve got 90 pages; if I just stop thinking that the only way to make a movie is the way that movies get made, and start thinking that I can make a movie the way that television shows get made, I can get in 90 pages of content with this approach. And that’s what I did.”

And the cost-effective budget and fast-paced shooting schedule only enhanced the authenticity of the project, specifically the performances. How do we know? Well, so far, The Sublime and Beautiful has won the award for Best Actor at the Milan International Film Festival (MIFF), it received the Best Heartland Feature award from the Kansas City Film Festival, and it’s been honored with the title of Official Selection 2014 at the Newport Beach Film Festival, and the winner of the Best Film, Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Cinematography awards. Yes, I think that’s one way to measure a film’s effectiveness.

“Great actors elevate the moments, and the moments become of singular importance,” Robbins’ shared. “That’s why you want great actors because no matter what else is going on, they’re going to come in and make sure that it’s the moment that will be the most important thing that’s happening. And as an actor myself, I recognize that. And now as the director, my directing became all about the moments too.”

What’s next for Blake Robbins, the masterful writer, director and actor, is more directing and writing. He’s already been approached to write and direct a film centering on a handy-capped yoga instructor who works with other people with special needs, all from his wheelchair, in order to change their lives, and he’s creating a television series centering around the evangelical church. “And a TV show like that probably won’t make too many people happy, but there’s a lot of great material there for a series,” he commented. He also has a satirical, black comedy about the facade that Hollywood can be and a strong first draft completed on a civil war re-enactment comedy, so the man is certainly not taking a vacation anytime soon.

Meanwhile, what’s certain is that The Sublime and Beautiful will continue to have audiences across the country experiencing that someone gets it. They will be experiencing that someone out there really gets what they’re dealing with so much that they would put themselves on the line to make this film. And Blake Robbins is that person who is making the difference. And the truly remarkable thing about that is that for Robbins’, he’s just doing what works.

“It doesn’t surprise me that many successful film directors started in the manner that I started where you create your own piece of work and you have to just figure it out. And you have to figure out how to take all these components, some of which might be considered restrictive, prohibiting the creative process, and you will have to turn them all in your favor and make them part of your solution. And that’s what I did in order to make this film and make this difference.”

No One is Alone: Wild; Foxcatcher

A female hiker with bleeding feet howls in the wilderness as one of her ill-fitting boots plunges into the abyss; so begins Wild, based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir recounting her efforts to reverse the downward spiral that had become her life by hiking a thousand miles (or more) of the Pacific Coast Trail.

Her journey through this occasionally treacherous physical and spiritual landscape toward some kind of redemption is the basis of a solid, emotionally engaging film. There are several reasons to see Wild even if you’re not a Reese Witherspoon fan (although it helps). For one thing, this is not the Witherspoon equivalent of Robert Redford’s All is Lost (good as that was); in this case, there is a nicely structured screenplay by Nick Hornby which is layered with flashbacks depicting Strayed’s fraying relationship with her soon to be ex-husband, as well as her loving relationship with her mother (the luminous Laura Dern). Ms. Dern is nothing sort of wonderful as the mom who has made a conscious choice to improve herself and “not let the bastards get her down.” Unfortunately for Witherspoon, being deprived of this relationship is the catalyst for what amounts to a drug-induced sex spree, and ultimately, her soul-cleansing journey.

While the flashbacks are skillfully integrated into the narrative, some of the best scenes show Witherspoon dealing with the natural and manmade hazards of the journey itself; wrestling with her obscenely oversized pack while neglecting to include certain essentials causes her to go hungry and depend on the kindness of strangers. Witherspoon’s wariness in her initial encounter with a presumably helpful worker, as well as others along the trail, provide both tension and humor. There are also the scenes involving fellow hikers, who are impressed with both her fortitude and her literary prowess (as in the quotes she leaves at the markers). All these scenes seem genuine and unforced, so that when Cheryl gets to the end of her journey, we feel, in Witherspoon’s capable hands (and feet), that she has earned some peace.

{youtube}8361stZ8n0w{/youtube}

Peace is in short supply in Foxcatcher, an intense drama loosely based on millionaire John du Pont’s misbegotten efforts to restore American pride by enticing the best wrestlers to his estate (Foxcatcher, hence the title) to create a world-class wrestling team that would compete at the World Wrestling Championships and the Olympics. To that extent, in the movie du Pont (Steve Carell) hires a sullen, withdrawn Olympic gold medalist Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) to train the team. Mark, who has been living in the shadow of his older brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo), is initially wary, and then later embraces the possibility of establishing his own identity. And all is well at Foxcatcher—until du Pont expresses an interest in also hiring Dave…

While the events in the movie don’t necessarily coincide with the facts (especially in the movie’s timeline), what’s on the screen is a powerful depiction of pride, betrayal, paranoia, and corruption in an environment as gray as the lives they depict. Channing Tatum doesn’t miss a beat as Mark, a powerful man rendered powerless by his own insecurities; Steve Carell (after initially seeming to be acting mainly with his false nose), emerges as an Oscar contender with his nuanced portrayal of du Pont, whose obsessions with American pride, wrestling, and the power of money still render him helpless in the face of his critical, condescending mother (Vanessa Redgrave). Mark Ruffalo again demonstrates why he is one of our finer actors by effortlessly portraying Dave Schultz as a compassionate older brother who is desperately trying to ease his younger sibling’s misery, without realizing he is a key part of it. The culminating violent act in Foxcatcher, while not explained, seems inevitable, without losing any of its requisite power.

Embrace Your Dysfunctional Family Christmas

We all are a bit dysfunctional, especially around the holidays

Dysfuntional Family Christmas
The NoHo Arts District dot Com team is split between overly cheerful, ugly sweater wearing, egg nog drinkers and fed-up-with-Christmas grinches. But both sides of this made up “War on Christmas” are soothed with theatre in NoHo. What? Yes, with theatre. If you’re looking for a Christmas show and a Christmas farce, go see North Hollywood’s original “Dysfunctional Family Christmas” at the Brickhouse Theatre. We asked NoHo resident writer, director, producer and our go-to theatre man Paul Storiale on what makes this show great for everyone, pro-Christmas, anti-Christmas or for those who celebrate other holidays.

What inspired you to write this Christmas farce, “Dysfunctional Family Christmas?”

I was wanting to write something fun for the holidays. I needed it to be fast and have a family dynamic. There really isn’t a Christmas farce out there. Farce is extremely difficult to write, but I challenged myself and wrote some of the roles for specific actors I knew, knowing they would pull off the comedic timing it needed.

Dysfunctional Family Christmas

Why should someone go see the show?

They will laugh out loud the entire time. It’s fun, it’s fast paced. Your eyes are glued and it’s designed so you have no time to think about the world outside. It’s everything you love about Christmas. And if you’re Jewish….there’s plenty for you as well.

You have two successful Christmas shows running at the same time and do it all alone, with no theatre company?

I design the sets/lights, write, direct, run the booth and take tickets for Dysfunctional Family Christmas. It’s just me and the actors. It’s not as much as being a control freak as much as having fun in every aspect of theatre.

I have a co-director for the other show “The Gayest Christmas Pageant Ever” this year, and together we put it together. However she’s leaving town for a couple weeks and I’m trying to figure out how to be at two places at once….challenge!!! 🙂

Show synopsis:

All Dean and Joanne want is a final uncomplicated holiday celebration with their family before they retire to Florida. But finding Grandpa Logan dead on Christmas Eve, the same day their young adult children are scheduled to arrive, tosses a significant wrench into their plans. Holiday hilarity ensues as Dean and Joanne attempt to keep grandpa’s death a secret from their kids … who just so happen to have a few secrets of their own bubbling beneath the surface. Lastly, but in no way least, we couldn’t help but ask his advice.

Do you have any advice for folks on how to deal with the family Christmas craziness?

I grew up the youngest of nine, so I would say if you’re going to go home, stay there a very short time. Or as Paul likes to say:

Hug, Love, Leave.

Meet one of the Loesers of Santasia

INTERVIEW with Shaun Loeser SANTASIA – A Holiday Comedy

[SANTASIA – A HOLIDAY COMEDY is now playing at the Whitefire Theatre through December 25. This Loser Kids Productions has been Critics Pick for 14 Years, is an Ovation Award-nominated production and audience favorite. It’s A laugh out loud, hilarious annual holiday romp and cult hit – the perfect blend of Yuletide snark and sentiment.]

{youtube}t2RPkBnfMDQ{/youtube}

When and how did you first get involved with theatre?

I was in 2nd grade at St. Anne’s Catholic School when I played ‘First Elf’ in our Christmas Play – – an elf who didn’t believe in the commercialization of Christmas.

While in Culinary School in Chicago, I started training and performing at the original Improv Olympic Conservatory. I studied improvisation with Del Close, who was formerly the director of Second City before starting ImprovOlympic who also taught the likes of Bill Murray, John Candy, John Belushi and Jim Belushi. My improv team coach was Amy Pohler who would later star on “Saturday Night Live” and on “Parks and Recreation.” Under the direction of Del Close, we developed a popular main stage show “My Life in Improv”. Over the years, I continued to perform on various House Teams and other main stage shows at IO.

Del’s direction and story-telling technique is the foundation of how Santasia was created. The story-telling we did was always grounded in truth. “Truth in Comedy” is what Del taught me, and there’s nothing’s funnier than real life.

Santasia www.nohoartsdistrict.com

What was the genesis for what is now SANTASIA?

Well, on July 1, 2000, our dad lost a hard- fought battle with cancer. He actually had the disease 3 different times. Dad always made Christmas the best time of year for my brother Brandon and me.

So when the holidays started approaching my brother, Brandon, and I agreed instead of grieving Christmas time…let’s make fun of it. That’s what our dad would have wanted anyway. Our dad was a joker and the funniest guy we ever knew. Plus, I thought it was going to be cheaper than seeing a shrink…15 years later, it turns out I was wrong.

The show has been going strong for 14 holiday seasons – – to what do you attribute the success of the show?

It’s the connection the audience makes with the material and the characters – – because all of the sketches are true stories. Everyone can relate to so many of the scenes. It takes the audience back to those special, innocent moments in our lives…when Christmas time was just simple. We also have something for everyone in this crazy show. We do full-out Broadway musical parodies that are hilarious, choreographed by my wife Tania Pearson-Loeser and brilliantly arranged by Omar D. Brancato. There are original animated shorts that are done in the same Rankin and Bass style as the Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer cartoons, in addition to a film parody of recent and current movies. My brother Brandon is the technical wizard behind Santasia. He and our crew write, produce, and film the parody, and Brandon edits and puts it all together.

Santasia www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Is it the same show each year, or do you add new skits to the piece?

Many of the skits have become cult classics that our audiences DEMAND to see again and again, but we still do change about 40 percent of the show. Santasia is about tradition, and like “It’s A Charlie Brown Christmas” it’s refreshing to see just the way we remembered seeing it the last time we watched it.

Santasia www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Is there anything else you might want us to know or you want to share about SANTASIA?

Santasia is a gift we received from our dad, and every year it is an honor and a privilege to be a part of someone’s holiday tradition. It is truly very humbling. It really is remarkable that out of our pain we can create so much happiness…and that’s a great gift and lesson that our dad, Bill Loeser, taught his silly sons!

Warning: Santasia is based upon true life stories we just make sure we keep the fun in dysfunction!

A Smart Kitchen Design

I recently worked with a repeat client to completely change the look and style of her kitchen. What was once a very outdated kitchen of the 70’s became a space that reflects not only the sign of the times, but beyond. Maple cabinets, white appliances paired with a tile floor and counters are no longer.

Today we have sleek stainless steel appliances, wood floors, white raised panel cabinets, subway tile back splash and beautiful granite counters. Where there was once an eating area and wall separating the kitchen and dining room is now a huge island with darker stained cabinets. The island not only provides tons of prep space and storage, but houses the microwave and allows for an eating area at one end. We also created a beautiful display area to showcase treasured china and crystal along with a few of her special mementos.

Stay tuned for further updates as we continue to work on the dining room and living room in the near future.

Many people think of The Nutcracker as being a Russian ballet. While it’s true that the ballet had its origins in 19th century Russia, it wasn’t until Willam Christensen choreographed the first American Nutcracker on the San Francisco Ballet in 1944, that it became the indispensable holiday favorite we think of today. Mr. C, widely known as the “grandfather of American ballet,” imbued it with his quintessential pioneer spirit and brought the piece with him when he founded Ballet West. It was there that Jennifer and Robbin Shahani danced this Nutcracker for many years, and now bring that same enthusiasm and light-hearted dramatic flair to their production of more than 90 academy students alongside professional guest dancers on stage at the beautiful Madrid Theatre in Canoga Park.

Independent Filmmaking – When in doubt, do it anyway…

Alex, Lily & Monsie

I was asked a few months ago to take part in a filmmaking festival a dear friend of mine was putting together. Because I am ridiculously busy and always say yes to things anyway, and then sometimes run myself ragged trying to get it all done, I acted like a grown up and said no.

Cut to a month later and another email from my friend asking me to please take part as her small festival was getting smaller, and me saying yes, of course I would, and what was I thinking saying no in the first place…

Cut again to this weekend…

Personal dramas aside, I had one clear and specific plan for filming Saturday night, which I then decided was unattainable and didn’t fit into the parameters of the festival anyway….this is actually me talking myself out of a perfectly good idea. Something I don’t usually do, but I did it this time because, again, I was trying to be the grown up….mistake.

So now we begin Sunday morning, and here I am clutching my newly spawned idea close to my chest with one day left to shoot, edit and realize my film….

How many mistakes did I make up to this point I hear you ask?

Well, I suppose it depends on how you look at it really, but probably quite a few, as usual.

The one mistake that I didn’t make was to cancel the whole thing entirely, because, even though that might always seem like an option, it really, really shouldn’t be.

When in doubt, do it anyway….

This moto of mine can sometimes, or often, get me in hot water, especially if I am having a row with my husband, but when used wisely, the power of it works every time.

All you can really expect when you make a film, aside from an oscar of course, ill prepared or not, is that you will learn from it.

Taking chances, putting yourself and your work out there, trying to do something in spite of the odds being stacked well against you, or even working within someone else’s parameters, can be exciting and fun, even when its all going horribly wrong…

But you will become a better filmmaker that’s for sure.

So I decided to take a bit of a chance and do something I have actually never done before with this particular film project, and make a documentary.

The rules of the festival are that you had to make a film around the concept of predator/prey as it applies to women and a certain type of man, that we have all unfortunately experienced form time to time. You know, the kind of guy that looks at you as if you were his next meal….and not in a good way.

So since I have a teenage daughter who is always complaining about the unwanted attention she and her friends get from various yucky guys, I thought it was a great opportunity to see what the voice of her generation had to say about this age old problem.

And it worked!

Lily and her friends Monsie and Alex were brilliant, and sweet and funny and all kinds of gorgeous. Also I heard a few stories that had my hair standing on end and believe me, there will be no bus taking to and from school for a while….

I shot a lazy interview, plying them all with english tea.

I then took some B roll of them getting ready to go out in Lily’s room, and walking around the neighborhood and yes, they did get honked at, and yes, I did get that on film…

I would never have made this little film if I hadn’t been forced to….maybe forced is the wrong word, but you know what I mean.

If I hadn’t put myself out there….in the position of having to answer a question not posed by me, in film.

If I hadn’t taken a leap of…..well a leap.

If I had stuck with my original “no”.

Because I said “yes”, I made a little film with my daughter and her friends that I think is actually rather nice, rather lovely, and rather important.

And who knows maybe my daughter wont think I am such an idiot for a while, or something.

Once it’s up I’ll post the link so you can see what I’m talking about.

I’m exhausted, but in that satisfied kind of way you get when you dug a big hole in the garden, or landed a rocket on a comet, or made a little film….

The Valley Film Festival Is Here

The Valley’s First and Longest, Contintually Running Film Festival Comes to NoHo December 10-14!

Valley Film Festival www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Get ready, North Hollywood. The 14th annual Valley Film Festival (VFF) is coming to the NoHo Arts District December 10-14, 2014 at Laemmle’s NoHo 7. The Valley Film Festival’s thought-provoking, entertaining lineup of cinema is so independent it can only be found in L.A.’s San Fernando Valley.

Founded in 2000, The Valley Film Festival, a project of Community Partners®, is the first and longest, continually running film festival in the San Fernando Valley. With a mission to join established and emerging talent with adventurous audiences in Los Angeles, the VFF has screened over 500 shorts, features, documentaries, animated films, experimental works, and music videos from around the world. While emphasizing independent film, the festival also screens studio productions, including BOOGIE NIGHTS, CHINATOWN, ENCINO MAN, FAST TIMES AT RIDGEMONT HIGH, MAGNOLIA, TERMINATOR 2, VALLEY GIRL, and WORLD TRADE CENTER. Their mission is to further the education, production, and distribution of filmmaking in The Valley, with a goal of bringing together established filmmakers, emerging talent, and their audiences on the studio backlot – just North of Hollywood.

We asked VFF co-founder TRACEY ADLAI:

“Why NoHo?”

“It’s my hometown! I was born/raised in Toluca Lake/NoHo and supporting my neighborhood is important to me. It doesn’t hurt that the best independent film & festival friendly theater is now in NoHo. We love being part of the Laemmle family.”

We also asked:

“What’s new this year?”

“While the format of the festival hasn’t change, our content changes every year. This year we have films from 5 continents – it’s exciting to me that filmmakers in the nooks & crannies of the world (Azerbaijan, Colombia, Flanders, etc.) are learning North Hollywood IS Hollywood! We also learned that a short we’re screening, Baghdad Messi, was shortlisted for a Best Live Action Short Oscar. And we have an Oscar nominee, Drew Bailey, returning to VFF with Flyboy. He last screened Miracle Fish with us in 2009 & was nominated for an Oscar in 2010.”

{youtube}ucqUeJlL6HQ{/youtube}

Along with quality independent domestic and international cinema, VFF is known as the premiere showcase for Valley based filmmakers. The 14th Annual Valley Film Festival provides audiences with the opportunity to discover 45 of today’s most provocative films, such as FLYBOY, the newest short film produced by Academy Award Nominee Drew Bailey (MIRACLE FISH, 2009). The complete list of films is available at valleyfilmfest.com.

The Opening Night Film sees the return of Director John Putch to VFF with the only Los Angeles festival screening of ROUTE 30 THREE! The final chapter of the comedic trilogy set in rural South Central Pennsylvania, features David Cowgill, Nathalie Boltt, and Dan Poole. Known for his work on “Cougar Town,” “Scrubs” and “Ugly Betty,” John Putch previously screened BACHELORMAN (2003), MOJAVE PHONE BOOTH (2006), ROUTE 30 (2008) and ROUTE 30, TOO (2012) at The Valley Film Festival.

{vimeo}85900497{/vimeo}

VFF continues to promote local independent production with more than 15 films made by Angelenos, Vals, and shot in or about the glamorous San Fernando Valley, such as:

VFF’s Centerpiece Screening, YOU OR A LOVED ONE, a dramedy directed by Matt Mercer, follows a reclusive illustrator, as he navigates withdrawal effects from a pharmaceutical drug trial, and is thrust back into daily life, and love, in Los Angeles.

ODD BRODSKY, a quirky comedy about following your dreams, directed by Cindy Baer, closes the 2014 festival: Audrey Brodsky quits her job of 11 years to pursue her dream of acting. There’s just one problem: she’s not very good at it. When Audrey meets an aspiring cameraman online, the adventure of her life finally begins. Cindy Baer previously screened MORBID CURIOSITY (2006), STALKED (2011), and SEYMOUR SALLY RUFUS (2012) at VFF.

The Festival’s documentary showcases include GONE SOUTH: HOW CANADA INVENTED HOLLYWOOD, SING YOUR OWN SONG: AN OPERA LOVE STORY, and THE GREEN GIRL -an in-depth look at Star Trek icon and prolific actress, Susan Oliver.

An eclectic collection of short films from around the globe, along with VFF’s signature “Made in the (818) and “Girls on Film,” programs round out the festival.

In addition to screenings, the festival provides educational panels, social mixers, opportunities for young filmmakers, Audience Awards, and the juried “Ten Degrees Hotter” Award for one feature and one short chosen from the competitive section.

Universal Bar & Grill is the ultimate dive bar!

The Universal Bar and Grill is a well-known, family owned business established over twenty years ago in North Hollywood. It has a reputation as a wonderful place to relax, enjoy good food, a full bar and great service.

Check out their weekly calendar for your choice of entertainment whether it’s their live bands, comedy nights, karaoke or something else that takes your fancy. They also offer all sport events on their Direct TV Channels and a pool table is conveniently located in the back area. If you enjoy smoking (and you know you should quit, right?), you can indulge your habit in the patio area.

I stopped this last Saturday night to have a look. The stage is located in the corner of the room, in front of a wall of floor to ceiling windows and a disco ball hovers invitingly above center stage, spinning and reflecting a virtual rainbow of colors around the room.

An experiment in Punk Rock, The Friis Band took to the stage and, as luck would have it, I was wearing my pink doc martin boots – essential footwear for this music genre dancing! Luckily, there was enough room for people to move around to their sound and after the show I spent a few minutes speaking with Billie Friis who shared with me a little bit about her and her musical entourage; FRIIS BAND, rockabilly punk cabaret country. Featuring Billie Friis on vox , Grant Cihlar on Slide guitar and Bob Yost on drums. You can check out their music at https://soundcloud.com/friisband

If you are looking for a cool, local spot to grab a bite, a drink and hear some great music please check out the Universal Bar & Grill!

Holiday Season Crime Prevention Tips

Don’t be a victim of holiday crime, NoHo!

Holiday Crime Prevention Tips

The end of November had a large decrease in crime. Fifty-one crimes were reported compared to the previous month of 74 crimes. The crime cluster still appears to be along the Lankershim Blvd. corridor between Oxnard St. and Magnolia Blvd.

This time of year increases a lot of thefts related to the holiday season. We want an increased awareness when leaving items inside a vehicle after shopping as well as mail order items that are delivered to your doorstep.

It is not uncommon for criminals to follow delivery trucks such as a UPS truck and watch to see the locations where newly purchased items are being dropped off. As the delivery truck leaves a location, suspects go to the doorstep and remove the property. Most times, the homeowner is completely unaware the package was even delivered.

To deter this type of criminal activity, we suggest the following:

• Request a signature confirmation of delivery. By doing this, the deliverer will have to wait until you’re available or deliver the package to a neighbor.
• If possible, have your packages delivered to you at work.
• Track packages online to see exactly when they’re sent to your house for delivery. If you’re out of town at the time, phone a neighbor to pick up the package for you.
• Leave special instructions for where to deliver the packages. A good place is on the side or back of the house, so that the package is out of site from the road.
• Do not leave outgoing mail in your unlocked mailbox
• Utilize a temporary post office box location for security purposes

Art Still Matters

Art Still Matters

The Arts Matter www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Art is a reflection of our own humanity, a window into our contemporary condition. The arts are not frivolous endeavors; they help to inspire our community, the arts promote the advancement of creativity, and advance our understanding of goodness and beauty. Art acts as our expression of social values, breaking down preconditions and preconceptions leading to a more diverse community and broader cultural community and togetherness. Art helps us understand one another and heals wounds that may otherwise fester. The National Endowment for Arts states that a great country deserves great art. These ideas can seem idealistic but art has proven to add real tangible value to ourselves and our future selves, our children, getting them involved in supporting the arts.

Students that receive an art education routinely have higher grade point averages, higher scores on standardized testing and significantly lower drop-out rates. Americans for the Arts states that, “Students with 4 years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with just one-half year of arts or music.”

Online music endeavors like jamplay.com have created online communities, which help to foster the advancement of music and musical support. Sites like this bringing together musicians from all over the world, from beginners to professionals, and have created a virtual support network. These virtual communities provide its members access to online lessons, professional instructors and fellow musical enthusiasts together in one place to share ideas and offer support.

Supporting the arts can also help support your local and national economy. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis has calculated the art contribution to our national GDP as high as 3.25%–that’s more then tourism and agriculture! The art world can seem hard to support when many art related productions and fine art objects can seem out of reach for many, but anyone can contribute to any one of the many non-profit art entities which exist locally or nationally. Contributing to these organizations not only helps them further the advancement of the arts but also the community as a whole. According to an online article written in artsblog, Non-profit art endeavors generate $135 billion a year, creating and maintain over four million jobs, and contributes over $20 billion in government revenue. Art drives a more robust tourism to local communities. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that tourism looking directly to visit art based institutions has risen around 24% in the last decade. The U.S. exports over $72 billion in art related products every year.

Art has a real social impact and help create a more robust creative and innovative society. Communities which have a higher support base for the art have seen more civic engagement, better child care and welfare and much lower poverty rates. In their report entitled “Their Ready to Innovate report”, The Conference Board reports “creativity is among the highest importance when hiring.” and state that, “Nobel laureates in the science are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than average scientists.”

Art helps us communicate with ourselves and to the world at large. The arts are our lifeline to self expression. Unfortunately, funding for the arts have decreased at what should be alarming rates. It is important that all communities band together to support the arts in any way they can.  The proof of its value has been stated above and to be sure there are many more advantages left unsaid.

In his essay entitled “The Importance of the Arts in a Community”, Craig W. Johnson of the Coastal Youth Ballet Theatre, writes “Many arts organizations across the United States are working hard to undo the damage done by policies that convinced a nation that the arts are of limited value. The way many are accomplishing this goal is by re-extending themselves, actively inviting people back to the arts through outreach work in the Community. The hope is that by re-investing in the Community, people will be attracted back to the real source of change–the arts. This is the solution to re-inspiring a Community’s faith in and support of the invaluable concepts taught by the arts. It is also the solution to discovering one’s own rich potential and the ensuing social advancements that come from such a discovery.”
