International Film Festival North Hollywood Announces Full Festival Line-up

First Annual International Film Festival North Hollywood Announces Full Festival Line-up

66 films from 14 countries, with 20 Premieres

International Film Festival North Hollywood (IFFNH) announces the full slate of films for the 2016 film festival, April 28 to May 1 at the NoHo Arts Center, 11136 Magnolia Blvd. in North Hollywood, CA. Their honored industry guest, Michael Hausman (“Gangs of New York,” “The Firm,” “Brokeback Mountain”), will receive the Cinema Trailblazer Award for his contributions to film, and two films he produced will screen as retrospectives: 1985’s Best Picture winner, “Amadeus,” directed by Milos Forman, and the groundbreaking, low-budget, “Alambrista!” (1977), with director Robert M. Young (Dominic & Eugene) also in attendance.

The festival has drawn a diverse group of emerging independent filmmakers representing Sweden, Italy, Guinea, The Netherlands, Puerto Rico, Australia, The United States, Great Britain, Spain, Germany, China, Brazil, France, Japan and the Fiji Islands. Sixteen directors are women, many of them multi-threat combinations of writer-producer-actor-director. In addition, the work of eight first-time directors and 14 local filmmakers will be screened.

This year, IFFNH is highlighting films about food, music, and dance, reflecting the creative spirit of North Hollywood.

Opening the festival on Thursday morning, April 28 at 11:00 AM is the West Coast Premiere of “A Farmer’s Road,” a new documentary about sustainable agriculture, featuring Top Chef winner Stephanie Izzard, celebrity chef & PBS host Rick Bayless and the Illinois-based owners of Prairie Fruits Farm & Creamery. Also screening, the delightful animated short, “Moom,” from the team that made the Oscar-nominated film, “The Dam Keeper.” Sponsored by Whole Foods Market in Sherman Oaks with VIP Luncheon to follow.

There will be a Red Carpet event at 6:00 PM on Thursday, April 28 followed by the Opening Night Film, “Gazelle: The Love Issue,” at 8:30 PM. It’s a documentary portrait of Gazelle, internationally known in the underground club scene for his boldly conceived costumes and for creating GAZELLAND, a magazine featuring the artists, photographers and designers of the gay nightlife community of London, New York and Sao Paulo. With Michael Musto, Kenny Kenny, Amanda Lepore, and others. The directing debut of Fijian filmmaker Cesar Terranova.

“We’re not afraid to be bold and raw,” says Artistic Director Nicholas Goodman, who founded IFFNoHo with his wife, Executive Director Hortencia Goodman. “But we aim to avoid character and story tropes, especially with regard to the depiction of violence and the treatment of women on film.” That said, they are screening a pair of films, The Bigfoot Hunters and a special Midnight screening of The Cruel Tale of the Medicine Man that you could say go over the edge.

They have an exceptional line-up of shorts including “Vandal” and “The Last Journey of the Enigmatic Paul WR,” two films beginning their festival run with stops at Cannes and Tribeca, respectively. And they are happy to host the final festival appearance of Marcus Mizelle’s Los Angeles-based comedy, “Actor For Hire,” finishing its glorious run as our Closing Night Film.

World Premiere – The Cross of the Moment – Feature documentary about the climate crisis. You’ve heard the pundits and the demagogues, now, in this enlightening and important film, the scientists get their chance to speak. The first documentary feature from North Hollywood filmmaker Jacob Freydont-Attie. Sunday, May 1 at 1:15 PM.

Los Angeles Premiere – “Projections of America” – Feature documentary about the secret film unit of the US Army during World War II, run by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Robert Riskin, who produced some exquisite films about the promise of America. This film reveals much of this lost footage and explores Riskin’s colorful life in Hollywood. With special industry guest, Emmy winner and former President of the Writers Guild of America, Victoria Riskin, Robert Riskin’s daughter with actress and movie star Fay Wray. Saturday, April 30 at 4:00 PM.

International Film Festival North Hollywood www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The original 1933 classic restored print of “King Kong” (Starring Fay Wray) – Lovingly restored by Martin Scorsese’s nonprofit, The Film Foundation, the screening will begin with a Q&A with Fay Wray’s daughter, Victoria Riskin, who will read from her mother’s memoir and take questions. Not to be missed!

Special industry panel on “The Art of the Movie Trailer” – How are these “coming attractions” put together? Meet and learn from the best in the business, with AV/Squad President and former EVP of Creative Advertising for MGM Studios, Seth Gaven (“Furious 7,” “Star Trek Beyond,” “The Big Short,” “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”), and Rec Room Founder and former VP of Creative Advertising at 20th Century Fox, Mike George (“Deadpool,” “Avatar,” “Creed,” “The Simpson’s Movie”). Sunday May 1 at 12 PM.

“ Anthologies aren’t famous for changing attitudes en masse, but at the very least this one gives voice to the complexities of assuming and enjoying a ‘child-free’ life. Daum, an essayist, novelist and columnist at the Los Angeles Times, comes to the topic honestly….The 16 essays are cleverly arranged, creating a satisfying intellectual and emotional arc….the reader is treated to nearly every reason one might choose to forgo having children.” – New York Times Book Review

“Oftentimes hilarious and heartbreaking, and riddled throughout with truth.” – Los Angeles Review of Books

“[A] searing collection…The child-burdened should come away from this engaging collection with a rich sense of what they have missed.” – The Washington Post

“…Meghan Daum, has gathered together a group of people who are refreshingly clearheaded….No hand-wringing here. It’s the tone of voice dominating the entire anthology that is so exhilarating: thoughtful, unconflicted, unapologetic. Talk about the light at the end of the tunnel….The women in Daum’s anthology are exciting and admirable…[they’re] a significant, world-changing minority.” – Bookforum

ABOUT NEW SHORT FICTION SERIES

“In the summer of 2011 when we realized that the series needed a new home for 2012, I wanted a venue that was more than a performance space – it needed to be a place that my audience could “Eat, Drink and Be Literate.” The New Short Fiction Series originated 19 years ago in the NoHo Arts District at The Actors Workout Studio, and we performed our 2001 and 2002 season at The Historic Lankershim Arts Center, so the NoHo Arts District had been a fruitful home to the series in the past. The Federal Bar, at the time recently, opened was suggested to me and when I walked in the door to meet Ed Levy, the General Manager, I knew that this was the place. It’s been a great fit for both the series and The Federal Bar. 2015 is our 3rd year there and my audience loves the environment, the food and drink, and the NoHo Arts District. The most common comment I get is “This is like a New York neighborhood – you don’t see this kind of combination of entertainment and dining on the Westside.” We are very happy and proud to present our 20th at The Federal Bar and we hope that folks will “Eat, Drink and Be Literate” with us.” – Sally Shore host and producer of The New Short Fiction SeriesThe New Short Fiction Series is a project of the Pasadena Arts Council’s EMERGE Fiscal Sponsorship Program.

Tough times, more money!

Tough times, more money!

As uncertainty at home and abroad roils the financial markets, income-minded investors seeking protection from the bumpy road ahead may find dividend-paying stocks offer an attractive mix of features and warrant a place in their equity portfolios.

The appeal is simple: Dividend-paying stocks can provide investors with tangible returns on a regular basis regardless of market conditions.

The Benefits of Dividend-Paying Stocks

If you own stock in a company that has announced it will be issuing a dividend, or if you are proactively considering adding an allocation to dividend-paying stocks, history provides compelling evidence of the long-term benefits of dividends and their reinvestment.

  • A sign of corporate financial health. Dividend payouts are often seen as a sign of a company’s financial health and management’s confidence in future cash flow. Dividends also communicate a positive message to investors who perceive a long-term dividend as a sign of corporate maturity and strength.
  • A key driver of total return. There are several factors that may contribute to the superior total return of dividend-paying stocks over the long term. One of them is dividend reinvestment. The longer the period in which dividends are reinvested, the greater the spread between price return and dividend reinvested total return.
  • Potentially stronger returns, lower volatility. Dividends may help to reduce portfolio losses when stock prices decline, and over long time horizons, stocks with a history of increasing their dividend each year have also produced higher returns with considerably less risk than non-dividend-paying stocks. For instance, over the past 10 years, the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats — those stocks within the S&P 500 that have increased their dividends each year for the past 25 years — produced annualized returns of 10.67% vs. 8.01% for the S&P 500 overall, with less volatility (13.70% vs. 14.76%, respectively).1

The Growth of Dividend-Paying Stocks, 1985-20142

If you are considering adding dividend-paying stocks to your investment mix, keep the following thoughts in mind.

  • Dividend-paying stocks may help diversify an income-generating portfolio. Income-oriented investors may want to diversify potential sources of income within their portfolios. Given current realities present in the bond market, stocks with above-average dividend yields may compare favorably with bonds and may act as a buffer should conditions turn negative within the bond market.
  • Dividends benefit from continued favorable tax treatment. The extension of the Bush-era tax cuts helps to reinforce the current case for dividend stocks. The tax bill that passed in early 2013 made the 15% top tax rate on qualifying dividends and other forms of investment income permanent for most investors, though it did raise the top rate to 20% for certain high-income investors. However, this is still lower than the 39.6% top rate on ordinary income.

Note that dividends can be increased, decreased, and/or eliminated at any time without prior notice.

Meet the folks at The Penthouse of NoHo

The NoHo Motto: The NoHo Arts District is only as great as its people.

A place for artists and a place to create art – Welcome The Penthouse of NoHo to the neighborhood.

What is The Penthouse of NoHo?

The Penthouse of Noho is a multi-purpose facility based in North Hollywood, CA founded by Tye Myers. Our goal is to provide not only a community of artists with a facility to express themselves without limits, but a place where health conscious minds come together to challenge their bodies through unique fitness classes.

A facility where you can book for a photo or video shoot, band or dance rehearsals, seminar or event, theater class or study your lines for your next casting. Enjoy our 1500 sq ft fitness studio that offers a variety of diverse classes for all ages or relax and recharge with a refreshing juice while you can conveniently have unlimited access to WiFi and get all your business done from the Penthouse.

The Penthouse of NoHo www.nohartsdistrict.com

Who started The Penthouse of NoHo and why?

Tye Myers has been a professional dancer in the industry for 16 years, dancing for some of the top artists, Brittney Spears, Prince and Ricky Martin, to name a few, and NoHo has been her base during that time. Her best friend founded the Basement in 2007 (a kids dance studio) and Tye helped manage the space between her dance tours. In 2013 Tye took ownership of the Basement shifting focus to private studio rentals. In September 2015 Tye had the opportunity to expand the Basement to the upstairs, 5,000=square-foot unit and used this opportunity to bring her vision of a creative artist haven to the front walk of Lankershim Blvd. and so ‘The Penthouse’ was born.

Tye, if you had the power to change one thing about the NoHo Arts District what would that be?

Being that I’ve had the chance to see NoHo’s many faces in the 16 years I’ve lived here I think the Arts District is growing and on the right path. I would like so much to see more artist collaborations, the joining of the different genres of visual and performance arts. My inspiration to create the Penthouse Artist Haven is for it to be a muse and collective space for artists to inspire yet another layer to the district’s continual development.

The Penthouse of NoHo www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Lara, what is your role in The Penthouse, and who is Lara?

I came to the Penthouse through knowledge of Tye looking fory teachers in September 2015. As an actor, dancer and yogi I felt Tye’s vision and the space very inspiring and wanted to come on board as a teacher specifically for my Yoga for Actors and Dancers class. In January 2016 we met again and I proposed to her my idea of launching our recent Spring Equinox Indoor Festival event. I have a passion for creative, collaborative endeavors and with my management and production skills wanted to support Tye in launching her vision of an Artist Haven in the NoHo Arts District. I live in Studio City but study acting at Stuart Rogers two doors down and teach at another local yoga studio too. So coming on board as the Artist Haven Class Director is the perfect addition to making the NoHo hood my creative nook to inspire and continue being inspired.

AMERICA’S FIRST DOG CAFE ANNOUNCES GRAND OPENING IN LOS ANGELES

Coffee Shop Offers Visitors The Companionship of Adoptable Rescue Dogs

Now this is a business I would love to see in the NoHo Arts District.

In 2015, 14083 animals were killed at Los Angeles City Animal Shelters. There are many reasons for these senseless murders….#1 … irresponsible pet owners that do not spade their animals, or dump pets at overcrowded shelters when their pet is sick or they tire of taking care of their pet. So what is the answer? NO KILL shelters in Los Angeles is the answer. For 10 years the City has talked about NO KILL shelters but still the killing of innocent animals continues. The below Dog Cafe is how one person can make a difference. Please be sure to visit The Dog Cafe… Thanks for listening, Nancy Bianconi, publisher

The Dog Cafe, the first of its kind in the United States, will hold its grand opening on April 7, 2016 at 240 N. Virgil Ave in Los Angeles. Located in the south Silver Lake neighborhood of Rampart Village, The Dog Cafe provides a space for visitors to intermingle with rescue dogs from local shelters who are available for adoption. Specialty coffee and tea drinks will be served out of the adjacent space next door, available for customers to take in to the dog lounge.

Betsy Coffee

The Dog Cafe’s mission is to revolutionize dog adoption by reinventing the way people connect with rescues who need homes. The Dog Cafe offers a comfortable and fun space for humans and dogs to meet and spend time with each other, away from the environment of overcrowded shelters, which can provoke fear and aggression in perfectly adoptable pups. In addition to helping worthy pups find homes, The Dog Cafe also offers the opportunity for people unable to have pets of their own to spend quality time with furry friends (and vice versa) without the commitment of adoption.

Inspired by the animal cafes in Asia, The Dog Cafe is breaking ground with its unique mission to serve as a new kind of a rescue for abandoned and stray dogs.

“After I moved to Korea from the United States as a child, I started frequenting the dog cafes there,” said Sarah Wolfgang, The Dog Cafe’s founder and owner. “As a dog lover, it was amazing to have the opportunity to go see and spend time with pups any time. Yet the sad fact is that those dogs are brought in from puppy mills for the sole purpose of spending their entire lives inside of a cafe, while millions of other animals are out on the streets or abandoned at shelters. The first Dog Cafe in America will serve as a venue for humans to indulge in their love of dogs, while at the same time, bettering and saving the lives of many of our nation’s canine residents.”

Wolfgang works closely with South Los Angeles Animal Shelter, in addition to other local shelters, to rescue dogs who would best benefit from socialization at The Dog Cafe. While all dogs are evaluated to ensure friendliness with both people and other dogs, The Dog Cafe focuses specifically on bringing in rescues who have been overlooked or viewed as not traditionally adoptable due to age, special needs or behavioral issues that require training. The company plans to expand by opening additional locations of The Dog Cafe in major cities across the U.S.

“We consider The Dog Cafe a halfway house for dogs; these pups may have been in bad situations where they were abused or neglected, then started to give up hope while sitting in shelter kennels, but we’re aiming to send each dog on the path to a new life in a forever home. When visitors see our dogs here with us, they see them in their true light – and some people will even find that they’re looking at future members of their families,” said Wolfgang.

Leading up to its grand opening, The Dog Cafe has been holding a soft opening of its dog lounge area for visitors to try out the concept. With its grand opening, The Dog Cafe will unveil its adjoining coffee shop, which in addition to other specialty drinks, will serve Grounds & Hounds Coffee Co. and Dogs Drink Coffee, both of whom donate a portion of their proceeds to animals in need. Menu items will include pour-over coffee, teas, lattes (including a signature “mocha” latte made with carob instead of chocolate), and lemonades flavored with rose, lavender and butterfly pea flower. Also revealed will be a retail space, including dog merchandise from The Dog Cafe’s partner brand, The Dog Company, as well as a curated selection of other products for dog owners and dog lovers. The Dog Cafe is dedicated to ensuring that all products sold give back to animal rescue.

The Dog Cafe’s regular business hours will be Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-7pm, beginning the day after its grand opening. Admission per person per hour is $10 and includes a complimentary coffee, tea or lemonade (or discount off of a specialty beverage). Advance reservations are recommended and can be booked on The Dog Cafe’s website at: http://www.thedogcafela.com/#!make-reservation/t91sh. The dog lounge portion will continue its soft opening, allowing walk-ins only, until April 7th. For their own safety, children under the age of 5 are not admitted; each minor between the age of 5 and 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. 1-hour parking is available in the adjoining parking lot. The space is also available to rent for private events.

About The Founder/Owner

Born in Pennsylvania to a Korean mother and an American father, Sarah Wolfgang spent 16 years of her adolescence and young adulthood in South Korea before moving back to the U.S. and settling in Los Angeles. During her time in South Korea, Wolfgang volunteered at privately run animal shelters, focusing on working with special needs dogs, rescuing animals from meat markets, and relocating dogs to the United States through the program Project: RASN. She is currently proud owner to a senior Shih Tzu, Fiona, and Shepherd-Husky mix, Sharkie (who is The Dog Cafe’s mascot and appears on the company logo).

Interview with Baby Oh Baby Writer-Director Phil Scarpaci playing at the Whitefire. www.nohoartsdistrict.com

When did you first get interested in theatre?

I didn’t get involved in theater until my college years in Eugene, Oregon. While acting in my very first show, Man of La Mancha, I played three very different characters and had a blast. It was a huge show with a long spring and summer run. I was hooked.

How did your first directing experience come about? What did you learn from the experience?

In my mid 20’s I discovered directing. It really was a no brainer for me as it allowed me to draw on all of my creative background – – music, dance, acting, painting, drawing and design. And since I’ve always been a storyteller, directing offered me a great opportunity to do that. What I learned right away about directing was that if you want to direct….direct. No one is going to hand it to you and you really need to be a self-starter.

Did you have a mentor or mentors along the way?

I was very lucky to have a few mentors along the way. In the late 70s at the Group Repertory Theatre, Lonny Chapman was a great mentor and a big influence. Also Leo Penn (Sean’s dad) took me under his wing and introduced me to the world of television directing. In addition, Dennis Weaver was so generous in countless ways when I was starting out. I was very fortunate to have those men in my life at such an early age. They saw something in me and did what they could to encourage me to pursue it. I always try to do the same for young upcoming talent.

Tell us a bit about the play and what might the audience take away from the experience of having seen it.

Baby Oh Baby is an exploration of how the ticking biological clock affects everyone’s behavior. It’s not just the women. It’s also the men who have to deal with the women dealing with that crazy ticking clock. This story is a comedic look at how that pressure can drive women to do some pretty crazy things. My hope is the audience leaves the theatre feeling better than when they arrived.

Interview with Baby Oh Baby Writer-Director Phil Scarpaci playing at the Whitefire. www.nohoartsdistrict.com

You and T.L. Shannon have co-written Baby Oh Baby. Assuming you grew up and have been living in the United States, how did you go about combining your comic sensibilities with those of T.L. who is British?

Based on an original story by T. L., I wrote Baby Oh Baby with a British slang dictionary opened on my desktop. Our collaboration is such that he spews out an idea, kind of a stream of consciousness that is usually quite long and covers a lot of territory. Getting it out of his head is a starting point for me and after he’s done saying what he wants to say, he passes it to me. I flesh out the idea and work on it in more detail, i.e. developing relationships, character arcs, conflicts, structure, and the physical comedy. In addition, a focused story arc that comes from multiple ideas to one means something to me. The process works really well for both of us. We stay out of each other’s way and have a lot of laughs when we are together.

The characters are quirky and delightful. Will we, perhaps, see them again?

I’m really staying focused on the process at hand which is to get this first production on its feet at the Whitefire. We will see what happens after that. I do love these characters and can’t seem to get enough of them…

You are predominantly a filmmaker. What brings you back to creating theater?

The reality is I have been in and out of theatre my entire career but I have been making my living in film and television. As I was writing Baby Oh Baby, the characters and the situations were very interesting to me on a personal level and I felt that there was a certain live theatrical element to the material making it a better fit for the stage than film.

What’s up next for you?

As we have been developing this play I have also been filming a documentary of the process. It’s titled “From Page to Stage” which will continue to shoot with the editing to start once the show opens.

If you could choose any profession what would it be?

Doing exactly what I’m doing. Being involved in film, theatre and television is my passion. This is also my profession and I have been fortunate enough to do it my entire adult life.

Baby Oh Baby runs Saturdays at 8:00 pm, March 19 – June 4. Advance Purchased Tickets: $20. Tickets at the door: $25. Discount Tickets Students/Seniors with ID; Groups of 10 or more: $15. Reviews – Eye in the Sky; 10 Cloverfield Lane

Eye in the Sky; 10 Cloverfield Lane by Mike Peros

If you’re looking for two well-acted, fairly gripping entertainments this weekend, it would be hard to go wrong with Eye in the Sky and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

Directed by Gavin Hood with a script by Guy Hibbert, Eye in the Sky takes on the question “what price victory?”—especially in terms of possible collateral damage. In this case, a number of wanted terrorists are located in a South African compound, loaded up for what appears to be imminent suicide bombings, and Helen Mirren’s Colonel is ready to launch a missile strike—until an innocent young girl is seen setting up to sell some bread right in front of the compound (there is no doubt about the innocence of this girl—unlike the dilemma faced by Bradley Cooper’s marksman in American Sniper). Pilot Aaron Paul refuses to carry out the attack—until both legal and moral obligations are met (namely, can the girl be removed from the area or can the possibility of her demise be reduced).

The negotiations between the military and the various politicos (some who are interested in self-preservation, while others are troubled by the ramifications of the possible bloodshed) are well-developed and laced with some dark humor (courtesy mainly of Alan Rickman in one of his last roles, as a concerned, pragmatic general). Juxtaposed with these remote dealings are the efforts of Barkhad Ali (from Captain Philips) as an undercover operative who is entrusted with both securing the identities of those in the compound, and doing all he can to get the girl out of harm’s way. There are many tense, suspenseful moments enroute to its resolution, as well as a number of trenchant scenes in which intelligent, reasonable characters try to come to terms with the inevitable costs of war. The moviemakers leave with you an indication of where their sympathies lie, but you may come away with your own. Worth checking out when it comes to your area.

10 Cloverfield Lane poses an interesting question: in the event of a possible world-ending attack (by parties unknown), would you rather stay in an underground bunker with John Goodman—or take your chances on the outside? The genius of 10 Cloverfield Lane is that it keeps you on edge throughout, as to both developments in the outside world, and Goodman’s motives—and it also offers a lead female character (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) who is nothing if not consistently resourceful—no shrieking scream queen she!).

The premise is that Winstead is driving through Louisiana after leaving her fiancé; she hears of blackouts in major cities and soon gets into a major accident. When she awakens, she finds herself chained to a bed and “tended to” by the solicitous but stern Goodman, who explains that there has been an attack, probably involving poisonous gas or radiation—with the likelihood that there are no survivors. Her only chance, as Goodman puts it, is to remain in the bunker (complete with generator, air filtration, food, and plenty of videos). There is also a third occupant (John Gallagher Jr.) who corroborates Goddman’s explanation, and….

I don’t want to reveal anything else—it’s better that you go in knowing as little as possible. Suffice it to say, that writers Josh Campbell, Matt Stuecken and Damien Chazelle, as well as director Dan Trachtenburg, deliver a nailbiting drama that doesn’t stint on the twists or the thrills—while leaving room for some good actors to make their mark. Winstead and Gallagher make for sympathetic, believable protagonists, but the film belongs to Goodman. In a rare recent lead role, Goodman uses melancholy, menace, and occasional mirth to create a memorable characterization. I won’t say any more—go and see him.

(Hint: No!)

Have you ever been ticketed in Studio City? There’s a groundswell of residents who want to HAVE A SAY!

ASFB was founded 20 years ago by Executive Director Jean-Philippe Malaty and Artistic Director, Tom Mossbrucker, both former principal dancers at The Joffrey Ballet.  Described by the New York Times as “A breath of fresh air,” Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company stands out as a model of what a small ballet company should be with its “musicality, athleticism, and technique-conscious delivery.”

A house-style emerges across this diverse dance menu, layering American athleticism on a base of European refinement. The company’s identity is tethered to its repertoire, which speaks a complex language, challenges audiences, and advances the art form.

The company’s pioneering spirit arises from a dual set of home cities: Aspen, nestled in the Rocky Mountains, and Santa Fe, gracing the Southwestern plateau. Shaping the cultural landscape of these communities – and influencing the dance field at large – is a contemporary ballet company now two decades old.

About Tom Mussbrucker, Artistic Director

Tom Mussbrucker, has been artistic director of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet since 1996. For the past eighteen years Tom has built a prestigious arts organization sharing two homes in Aspen and Santa Fe. In his role as artistic director, Tom cultivates highly sophisticated and challenging works of contemporary ballet. His shining achievement is ASFB’s roster of 28 ballets created on commission by leading global choreographers. Tom began to dance at four, studying tap in his hometown of Tacoma, Washington. He pursued classical ballet training at the School of American Ballet and Joffrey Ballet School. His twenty years as a principal dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, performing in over 70 ballets under the direct coaching of founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, coincided with a period of high artistic achievement for the company. Tom danced in works by great twentieth century choreographers: Fredrick Ashton, George Balanchine, Laura Dean, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Mark Morris, Paul Taylor and Twyla Tharp. Signature roles included Iago in Jose Limon’s The Moor’s Pavane; Champion Roper in Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo; Billy in Eugene Loring’s Billy the Kid; and Romeo in John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet. This rich dance heritage Tom brings to coaching dancers today. In 2013, Tom shared an honor with Executive Director Jean-Philippe Malaty when the Santa Fe Community Foundation bestowed its Piñon Award on the company. In 2010, in recognition of ASFB’s contribution to the field of dance, Tom and Jean-Philippe were honored with the Joyce Theater Foundation Award. A former board member of Dance USA, Tom currently serves on the board of The Gerald Arpino and Robert Joffrey Foundation.

About Jean-Philippe Malaty, Executive Director

Jean-Philippe Malaty was born in the Basque region of France. After receiving his baccalaureate in dance, he accepted scholarships to study at Mudra, Maurice Béjart’s school in Brussels and at John Cranko’s ballet academy in Stuttgart. Invited by acclaimed instructor David Howard to study in New York, Jean-Philippe traveled to America under Howard’s tutelage. Jean-Philippe’s performance career began with Joffrey II. He also danced as a guest artist with Los Angeles Classical Ballet, Ballet Hispanico, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. Jean-Philippe segued from the stage to an administrator role while still in his twenties. A key member of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet’s start-up team, Jean-Philippe has been central to developing the company’s unique dual-city business model. He directs operations in two locations, overseeing a $4.2 million budget that he allocates to the company, two schools, an esteemed presenting series, and an award-winning folkloric outreach program. In a daring managerial move, in 2014, Jean-Philippe added Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe as a second performance company under the ASFB umbrella. Over the last decade, Jean-Philippe has received multiple accolades from the field. He has served as panelist for both the Colorado Council for the Arts and National Endowment for Arts. The Denver Bonfils-Stanton Foundation granted him their Livingston Fellowship in recognition of his significant leadership role in Colorado’s non-profit sector. Jean-Philippe and Tom were also co-honored with the Joyce Theater Foundation Award in recognition of ASFB’s contribution to dance. He shared an honor with Artistic Director Tom Mossbrucker when the Santa Fe Community Foundation bestowed its Piñon Award on the company. Jean-Philippe’s first love is teaching, and when his schedule permits, he teaches company class and is a guest instructor at schools and universities. RENE ROSADO: The most handsome commodity in Hollywood!

RENE ROSADO: The most handsome commodity in Hollywood!

Sitting at the Starbucks at Ventura Blvd. and Vantage in Studio City, I talked to Rene about his major recurring role on TNT’s “MAJOR CRIMES” and how it has changed his life.

I met Rene six years ago when he was a Server at the Cheesecake Factory/The Grove. Even then, he exhibited an abundance of ‘star-quality’; that ‘IT factor’ that so few people possess. Rene exudes it.

Today he lives in North Hollywood and he’s humble with his new found success. And fame.

Waide– Tell me about Major Crimes… how did you get the role? The audition?

Rene– I signed with Gersh… that’s very new… They’ve been amazing. I got lucky with a great rep. My manager is Tim Taylor. I also have a Team in New York… I go to this audition just for three episodes. After the audition, they called me back. The scene was for me in a morgue looking at the body of my dead sister. There’s nothing there at the audition, so I had to really focus and just see my sister there. That was also the first scene I shot with them. I was crying… to think it was my sister there in a morgue. It’s very emotional… It was a very intense process. Got called back three times… on the third call back I was crying to the point of exhaustion in the room… I was only booked for three episodes, but the creator, James Duff, an incredible human being, he just kept writing me in. He wasn’t sure what to do with my character, so he decided to make me the love interest for Rusty Beck.

Waide– Google it and the kiss will pop up!

Rene– Yes! I know! It’s fascinating. I didn’t realize how big the show was… Major Crimes has a huge following.

Waide– I know. A world wide audience. Your famous. Congratulations! You’ve got quite a fan base.

Rene– It’s pretty awesome. It’s the first time I’m experiencing something so big. It’s nice to get feedback… feels good.

Waide– What’s it like working with Mary McDonnell?

Rene– … Mary is a sweetheart. Oh my God, the first time I met her… you can feel her energy, her light. She’s like this warm light… amazing. I love sitting down with her. She helps me out a lot. She knows what’s going on. She brings the best out of you at all times.

Waide– Academy Award Nominee, she knows how to break down a script.

Rene– She’s amazing, Waide. The cool thing is, I asked her, ‘Mary would you help me break down my script?’ and she said, ‘yes!’ She takes time out and teaches me. Waide, she doesn’t have to do that. I’ve seen the amount of work she has to do everyday… how do you do this and still have a life? And, she’ll tell me, ‘there’s a way to do it, Rene. I’ll show you.’ She’s awesome. Loving. Motherly. The entire cast cares genuinely for one another. We’re a family. Cast and crew. Even off work, we hang out with each other.

Waide– What are your next projects?

Rene– Right now, the major thing is going back to ‘Major Crimes.’ I love going to work there. It doesn’t feel like work.

Waide– That’s because you love what you’re doing.

Rene– I do! I’ve got a new publicist. I’ve got the right people handling me right now. Good magazine coverage.

Waide– Your character… Let’s zero in on that… They, the writers, just decided to make you gay?

Rene– James, the Showrunner. I didn’t even know till the fifth episode… remember, they don’t tell you anything… they don’t tell you what is going to happened script to script… so, we are learning as the viewers are learning… at the table read, Gustavo and Rusty are sitting down watching ‘the trial’ happen and Gustavo holds his wrist… so, small things like that… Gus is going there… there is a beautiful art to him. It’s amazing to play this character who starts off so defeated… going through this emotional journey… and he gets this new love and he feels he can live again. A beautiful journey. I’m loving him. Seeing him bloom and grow…

(There is a long pause as Rene reflects.)

Waide– What’s your favorite color?

Rene– Blue. Because it makes me happy.

Waide– What’s your favorite book?

Rene– “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. That book changed my life.

Waide– What’s your favorite film?

Rene– “A Bronx Tale”!

Waide– What’s your Happy Place Song?

Rene– Happy Place Song?

Waide– The song that no matter where you are, when you hear it, it takes you to that Happy Place…

Rene– … I don’t know… I don’t know if I’ve got one…

Waide– OK… you don’t have to (We both laugh at this)… I’m going to give you three words. You tell me in a word or two what’s the first thing that pops in your head…

Rene– Alright.

Waide– Hollywood.

Rene– Family.

Waide– Mary McDonnell.

Rene– Mother. Mother Mary.

Waide– Trump.

Rene– (He bursts into laughter) … Oh. My. God. Jesus Christ… Somebody save us!

(Now we’re both laughing hysterically.)

Waide– That’s more than one or two (We’re still laughing)… Is there anything you’d like to add regarding your Art?

Rene– I’m writing a love story right now. Based on a real life experience that happened to me. I’m very new to writing, I have many writer friends who are helping and mentoring. I think it’s a great story to tell and I want to star in the film adaptation. It’s personal and a lot harder than I thought it would be.

Waide– Well, good writing is hard.

Rene– Yeah.

Waide– And everyone has their own opinion.

Rene– Exactly. Right now, I’m in the Treatment phase… I’m also writing a feature and sometime this year, I’ll be going to New York for a feature called “Asher.” I’m in talks with three projects… One, a true story where I would play a heroine addict. I’m looking forward to reaching deep into this character. His pain.

Waide– Any theatre?

Rene– No. It’s all ‘Major Crimes’ right now.

Waide– One more word and you tell me what comes to mind…

Rene– I like this.

Waide– Marriage Equality.

Rene– I am a lover and I am passionate… Love is Life… Love is God… How can anyone ever tell you don’t Love God. Love is beautiful. Of course, marry!

Waide– There’s that clip on Google where Gus kisses Rusty. It’s quite beautiful. It was very authentic. It didn’t look like you were about to throw-up in his face or get sick.

Rene– Absolutely. When I’m on set, I am Gus. And Gus is in love with Rusty. They’ve both gone through so much together that they can’t help but to be in love. That’s what that scene was about. It’s beautiful.

Waide– Your acting classes have paid off!

Rene– Thank God! I was training with Marta DuBois… I never had reservations regarding the character Gus. I just wanted to be loyal to him. Give him life. Playing a gay man is beautiful. It’s work.

Waide– Who’s your movie star crush?

Rene– … Wow, I don’t think I have one… Who’s yours?

Waide– Jeremy Renner. I make it quite clear on my Facebook page, too. I think he’s brilliant. If I ever met him, I’d probably be tongue tied for the first couple of minutes.

Rene– (Breaks into laughter) OK, I’ll say Zoe Saldana. She’s awesome. She’s beautiful. Sexy. Strong.

Waide– Where were you born?

Rene– I’m Puerto Rican.

Waide– Anything personal you’d like to say to the Artist?

Rene– Yes… This is to all artists… there’s always going to be a bad day. Ask yourself why are you doing this? Because you love it and you are doing it to better humanity. Make a positive impact. It’s your Dharma. Discover who you are. That’s the most important part of the journey. Everything else is not important. Remember, we chose this.

Waide– Thank you, Rene.

Are we getting our NoHo sidewalks repaired?

We hope so!

{youtube}2wLlYgoSf4w{/youtube}

This video still makes folks laugh. But behind every joke there is some truth. We’ve all seen the uprooted sidewalks from, well, actually tree roots. You know you’ve tripped, stubbed your toe, dropped everything because of a broken sidewalk. As the video below “happily” shows, our sidewalks need repair. It’s O.K. Help may be on the way. Well NoHo Councilman Paul Krekorian, along with Councilmembers Busciano, Martinez, Bonin, is working on a plan to help repair North Hollywood and other L.A. neighborhood sidewalks.

Here’s a letter from Councilman Krekorian:

Councilman Paul Krekorian sidewalk repair www.nohoartsdistrict.com

“Dear Friend:

After two years of concentrated work, community meetings and neighborhood input, this week I announced a final policy framework to repair every broken sidewalk in Los Angeles.

The 11-point plan, first laid out in a public letter signed by Councilmembers Busciano, Martinez, Bonin and me, received unanimous support at Monday’s joint hearing of the Budget and Finance and Public Works committees. It is comprehensive, fair and will result in the repair of every sidewalk in our 11,000 mile system that needs it.

The plan is the culmination of extensive discussions over the past two years. We spent countless hours reading reports, considering staff recommendations and getting invaluable input from hundreds of Angelenos about what LA’s sidewalk repair policy should look like. All of this helped us get to the point where we could make decisions, which we did on Monday. Our sidewalk plan will be heard by the full City Council within the next few weeks and, once approved, will become the framework for LA’s comprehensive repair program.

What the Sidewalk Repair Plan Means for LA

Our comprehensive sidewalk repair plan is a multi-pronged approach that will begin this summer and unfold over the next three decades. Here’s a summary of what we hope to achieve:

-Implement a Comprehensive Repair Program: The city will perform one-time repairs for all sidewalks in the city that need it.

-Offer a Warranty for Future Damage: The city will offer a 20-year warranty on its sidewalk repairs for residential properties and a five-year warranty for commercial properties.

-Inspect and Certify Sidewalks: The city will inspect sidewalks and certify those that are in good, ADA compliant condition.

-Prioritize and Coordinate Repairs: The city’s Bureau of Engineering will develop a fair and objective system to prioritize when and where sidewalks should be repaired.

-Coordinate Demand-based Repair Work with Council Offices: The city will be responsive to complaints and repair sidewalks where there is an impediment to mobility.
-Create a Division of Labor: The city will use its workforce, along with private-sector workers, to fix LA’s sidewalks.

-Find Creative Ways to Enhance the Program: The city will find ways to use the sidewalk program for workforce development and job training programs and explore financing options to complete the program as quickly as possible.

-Preserve Street Trees and Maintain Accessibility: The city will make every effort to protect neighborhood trees. Wherever removal is required to make a sidewalk accessible, there will be a tree replacement program using trees that won’t cause future damage.

-Use Non-Standard Sidewalk Designs and Materials: The city will explore using alternative designs and materials that promote environmental objectives, like maximizing groundwater infiltration, providing flexibility for tree growth and making parkways more sustainable and resilient.

-Encourage Proactive Repairs: The city will create a partnership between property owners and the city. Offer a substantial rebate to property owners who repair their sidewalks within the first three years of the program.

-Repeal the Tree Root Exception: The City Council will repeal the tree root exception so that it can enforce state law governing sidewalks.

On the Right Path

For the past 40 years, Los Angeles residents have been stuck with dysfunctional sidewalk policy. This program will change all of that. It will fix the cracks and the bumps, ensure accessibility and allow all Angelenos to get around neighborhood sidewalks without fear and frustration.

Click here to read my letter outlining LA’s sidewalk repair plan. Let me know what you think about the plan by emailing me at paul.krekorian@lacity.org or calling me at 213-473-7002.

Very truly yours,
councilman Paul Krekorian www.nohoartsdistrict.com

NoHo’s Bow & Truss to Reopen as El Tejano

Knitting Factory Entertainment and Partners BIG WANGS AND TIPSY COW FOUNDERS OPEN NEW TEX-MEX CONCEPT ‘EL TEJANO’

We have some great news, NoHo! The folks at the Knitting Factory Entertainment (KFE), the entertainent and hosptiality company and owners of The Federal Bar, are partnering with the founders of Big Wangs and Tipsy Cow, to renovate enovating KFE’s former Latin-inspired restaurant and bar Bow & Truss. So what’s it going to be? Something fun and fabulous, of course. This former North Hollywood restaurant will reopen as El Tejano, a new Tex-Mex restaurant as big and bold as the great state of Texas. The team expects to open El Tejano in May.

“They say ‘everything is bigger in Texas,” remarked partner Peter “PJ” Brill. “El Tejano is going to offer a huge Tex-Mex menu honoring the traditions of that culinary tradition with an emphasis on specialty tacos and full-flavored salsas. Don’t worry; we’ll have your queso, Frito pie and chili con carne too—as well as numerous other innovative Tex-Mex dishes. Joe and I have learned the good people of Los Angeles just want a good honest product in front of them without the façade of Tinseltown.”

Partner Joe Barker promises, “El Tejano will also feature Los Angeles’ most awesome Texas-sized patio featuring outdoor pastimes and our soon to be world famous ‘Frozen Beerita!’ Our laid-back bar will focus on a great Mexican, craft and domestic draft and bottle beer list alongside a cavernous list of margaritas and tequilas.”

Brill and Barker own four Big Wangs sports bars, a chain they founded in 2005: one in Valencia; DTLA; one in Hollywood and one around the corner from El Tejano on Lankershim in North Hollywood. Owners concentrate on “filling all of your eating, drinking, and entertainment needs. Our mind-blowing homemade food and value-priced drinks keep you coming back for more and more. Oh, we also have more HD TVs than anyone else in LA.”

In 2014, the team opened The Tipsy Cow in Sherman Oaks, an eclectic urban gastropub specializing in freshly ground burgers, delectable craft cocktails, and thirty-two draft beers personally selected to create a selection that is at once innovative in its make-up and inclusive in its appeal.

Opened in 2012 and located in the heart of NoHo’s Arts District, Bow & Truss was a popular and watering hole and eatery, with Latin-influenced cuisine and a vibrant bar scene El Tejano is sure to build upon. Along with its sister venue The Federal, Bow & Truss helped revitalize North Hollywood as a landmark entertainment destination in Los Angeles and received raves for its cuisine and its popular themed events ranging from movie screenings to a Game of Thrones inspired “whole animal” evening.

Knitting Factory CEO Morgan Margolis says, “Knitting Factory Entertainment is excited to build upon all our partners’ successes, and would like to thank Bow’s loyal customers and staff for four years of exceptional patronage and service. We are certain all the North Hollywood’s locals, regulars, visitors and new customers will enjoy embrace El Tejano as much as they loved Bow & Truss.” Brill concludes, “Grab your boots and Shiner Bock t-shirt and meet us at El Tejano. We’ll be handing out smiles at the door and you can take them home with you!”

About Knitting Factory Entertainment
“Curators of Music, Food and Style since 1987,” KFE owns four Knitting Factory live music venues, partnered with The Regent Theatre Los Angeles and Arrive Hotel Palm Springs, and three Federal Bar restaurants—across the US. Knitting Factory Records, along with its partners Partisan Records, manages recorded music catalogues and current and legacy artists (including Deer Tick, Gypsy Kings, Sylvan Esso, Phox, Fela Kuti, and Heartless Bastards); releases content in all formats as well as music-branded DVDs. Figure Eight Media, Knitting Factory Management and Van Johnson Company, handle the careers of emerging and critically acclaimed recording and theatrical artists both in the U.S. and overseas. They formed partnerships with Giant Step Marketing, The Connect Group for food and beverage marketing and the Talkhouse media web property. The KFE-produced Broadway musical hit Fela! has toured the world and the documentary FINDING FELA! premiered at the Sundance film Festival in January 2014. It also recently debuted the web series Drive Time.

Backgammon Film Review, by a Filmmaker

Backgammon Film Review by a Filmmaker

As I walked into the Laemmle NoHo 7, I saw the various posters and adverts for the movies being screened on display. A couple of studio films, a few independent films and finally a place card for “Backgammon“, the film I was about to review. I felt a rush of excitement as I wandered into the theatre, being there earlier than almost anyone else. The excitement I felt was born of a very real sense of camaraderie with the filmmaker and all those involved in helping to get this project done, from script to screen.

Backgammon film review by Javier Ronceros www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Having just directed my first feature last summer, that camaraderie was deepened once I found out that “Backgammon” was the director’s first feature film as well. I had first hand knowledge of how impossible it is for any film to be made, let alone securing the financing for a first feature. Time, expense, tenacity and a lot of blind faith was involved in the production of this or any film.

Sitting comfortably in my chair, the audience started pouring in. In a way I felt I was rehearsing my own anxiety when the time came for me to showcase my film. The lights dimmed and the film began.

The opening sequence featured lovely, lyrical camera work that would repeat time and time again during the telling of this story. Lucian, played by an up and coming young actor, Noah Silver, seems at first to be a brooding and sad individual, setting the tone for the film. He is quickly joined by Miranda, played by the wonderful Brittany Allen, a woman clearly, and gloriously, on a downward spiral, who loses, and finds herself as the story unfolds. Miranda is cooking bacon sandwiches and talk about the night before. The time line shifts back and forth, rather cleverly playing with the audience’s sense of reality. The events that occurred the night before, with Lucian’s girlfriend Elisabeth, played perfectly by Olivia Crocicchia and Miranda’s boorish artist boyfriend Gerald, who the fine young actor Alex Beh brings vividly to life, are revealed to be a tripping point for everyone. The story time shifts to the night before and we are introduced, however briefly to Miranda’s brother Andrew, the owner of the house, played brilliantly by Christian Alexander.

The house in which the whole story revolves is a character in and of itself, but like the time shifts and the flow of the story, I felt as if I visited all the rooms, but I still wasn’t sure of the floor plan. The story as it is told has the same effect, keeping us ever so sightly off balance. We understand the characters and what they are saying, but we are not moved in the same direction they are, as if we are occasional visitors to the story unfolding before us. There is a disconnect with the characters and the story walking in spiraling circles and we are not entirely sure who the story is about at times, which I liked, it’s unusual, as if the audience is deciding who is central to the story. Gerald the artist comes across as a lout and a boar and not very likable, creating a hugely stressful situation and when Lucian doesn’t follow his girlfriend out of the house when she leaves, it is clearly because of his mysterious attraction to Miranda, although he seems to be attempting to understand what it is that drives him to her.

There’s a discussion of Gerald’s art work, poetry and a lot of drinking. Gerald becomes more belligerent and a bottle is thrown, then Gerald leaves or disappears and the rest of the movie becomes a cat and mouse chase that involves missing art work and mysterious sounds in the dark, and when Lucian doesn’t follow his girlfriend out of the house when she leaves, it is clearly because of his mysterious attraction to Miranda, a feeling he is attempting to understand as he is driven to her. There is more talk and more drinking and by the time we find out what happened to Gerald, nothing seems inevitable.

Backgammon film review by Javier Ronceros www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The music is composed by Bryan Senti, and does its job beautifully, never overplayed or over used. The cinematography, by Simon Coull, is fluid and not only follows the characters, but sometimes remains still enough to give us the sensation of eavesdropping on something we shouldn’t be privy too. It’s such an interesting blend of observational and intimate, sometimes so close we are inside the characters and sometimes so removed its as if we were watching a play. As the characters fall apart and their story unravels the camera pulls back more and more as if examining rather than understanding, which is a very intriguing choice.

Regarding the two leads, Lucian and Miranda, the quiet moments are the best, and when the two are in the same room as the art I got a sense of calm and that all would be revealed to me and even a possibility that it would all work out for them. However, I never felt that I understood the ‘why’ of the relationship between Lucian and Miranda, which is perhaps the point in the end.

As for the script, written by Todd Niemi, R.B. Russell and Francisco Orvananos, I must say that despite, or perhaps because of the idiosyncrasies in the story, I did find myself taken away into this world of pain and solitude. My instinct was to feel connected with Lucian and Miranda, but instead, and more unusually, we were all alone together. The direction was confident and felt purposeful and of a first feature I felt the director, Francisco Orvananos should be very proud of his debut. In the end what really matters is that a vision was realized and presented to the world, what we as individuals make of it is of course up to us, and the best cinema is always the most personal.

I have to say, I am really looking forward to Francisco Orvananos’s next adventure in filmmaking.

THE HIDDEN ARTIST A Day in the Life of a Wardrobe Supervisor

0

It’s pilot season in LA. And no, it’s not a smorgasbord of eligible bachelors with private jets parked at the ten-minute-walk-to Van Nuys Airport I live near.

It’s the time of year when all the studios and screen writers get together to produce fast and furious could-be TV shows all at the same time.

The vast amount of energy and resources used to produce this phenomenon is conducive to everyone watering their lawns simultaneously at the same time and day of the week causing potential and actual pipe bursts (hmm…haven’t we heard that one before). In the costume world of television, it’s when a costumer or assistant designer goes to pull at Macy’s or Bloomingdale’s and all the 0’s, 2’s, and 4’s have disappeared because some other shows have pulled for the exact same sized actresses before you. It’s when you’re in a costume house like FOX and someone has roped off all the classic designer men’s shirts leaving behind the fashion has-beens hanging limply in the aisle. It’s an explosion of Internet ordering—opening boxes, hanging the crap up, and wondering if you’ll be able to return them in time before you wrap in two weeks, or worse, wondering if the orders will make it in at all.

I’m a wardrobe supervisor in the TV industry. Back in the day, that used to be the person who ran the costume department and held the hands of icons like Edith Head and Orry-Kelly to get their beautiful costume designs onto the screen. Today, especially for modern day television, the designer is somewhat of a glorified shopper because of time and budgetary constraints. The supervisor, sadly, is kind of a bean counter for all the purchases and rentals incurred by the designer and the shoppers. But hey—sometimes we get to order a uniform or two or three hundred that will need to be camera ready in a half hour. Needless to say, each situation varies to the next, but the common denominator in all of them is a Louis Vuitton pistol held to your head (using that as some on-topic designer-y visual). And situations get particularly gnarly when a production decides to cast a 350- pound actress to play a specific role. Of course, she’s to be in uniform—specifically, a pink housekeeping one. That’s when the real shit happens.

Turns out the only order I placed for that pink dress was with one uniform company and it decided not to arrive in time for the actress’s fitting because someone generated it with the wrong shipping address (let’s just say both that company and I are still pointing our index fingers at each other). Now this wouldn’t be so bad if it hadn’t happened on a Friday with only the weekend ahead to find something—ANYTHING—in a handful of stores that MIGHT be open and MIGHT carry XXXL pink housekeeping dresses. Needless to say, after a great amount of effort, I had to accept the fact that I’d been foiled by a simple mistake—no matter who’s it was—of changing one number for another. And for the record, I’d like to say UPS SUCKS. They wouldn’t help me get my package to the office because of a set of unbudgeable rules. I was left to lick my wounds while my pink XXXL housekeeping dress lay folded in a box only some 12 miles away at the UPS hub and me unable to personally retrieve it.

Admitting mistakes to a costume designer is short of laying your head on a platter and offering it up to her for her half-hour union lunch.

This is when something called humility is truly put to the test in our industry. You hope you will be forgiven for the fact that you are only human, but alas, TV Network execs, their producers, and directors rule. The costume designer and her subjects are expected to be the miracle workers they were hired to be. I’ve always called that “pulling it out of one’s ass,” but what to do with unexpected constipation? You pray the designer will compromise her—well, design and still look good in the eyes of the Royal Family. You pray she and the higher ups will accept the rental options you pulled before she told you they really wanted pink and after you were so confident it would be delivered to your door. Needless to say, the stress level at every level in the TV industry is extremely high. It’s like being hooked up to an adrenaline generator everyday and subjecting yourself to endurance tests all the time.

In the end, we’ll have clothes on that actress, although it may not be what the doctor ordered. The uncertainty in all of this is will the designer and I be remembered for all the chewed nails we left in the production office and what we delivered at lightening speed to the Network’s fast and furious schedule? Or will we both be wear scarlet hashtags for the rest of our careers—mine saying #Imessedup and hers #shemessedup?

Training and promotion muscles – keeping them in balance

Training and promotion muscles – keeping them in balance

Watching the Oscars always stimulates me in some way – sometimes good, sometimes not so good.

There are so many aspects of acting and the business I think about after watching them. One thing that struck me this year was promotion. How much of the outcome is affected by promotion vs. the actual art?

Art is subjective. It’s often hard to compare certain performances or films. All the films in this year’s Oscars were great, but different, hard to compare really. So how do people vote? How much do publicity, marketing, and money affect the vote? What promotional efforts went into even getting nominated? How many films and actors were not even considered because not enough people saw them?

There are two things a professional actor must keep in balance: craft and promotion.

An actor stays in the best acting shape by keeping their chops sharp. Most actors have a place to study and keep themselves working, so they are taking care of that side of the equation. But promotional skills are also a major factor to a successful career, and without promoting themselves properly, no one will know how good they are, or even who they are. I constantly see great actors not getting the notice they deserve, and I see mediocre actors getting a lot of heat and attention. Why? They have good publicity. The best actors must balance both craft and promotion. Both muscles must be at work. The first muscle, craft, is fun, it’s easy, and it’s what got us into this business to begin with. It’s creative, expressive, and we love it. As for the promotion side… not always as beloved.

How is your promotional muscle?

I had a talk with an actor this week. She was in a play performing four times a week, had six auditions, three callbacks, and had to prepare two acting exercises for class. That’s more than 15 times she worked on her craft this week, not to mention all the hours she clocked in rehearsing and preparation. This was a busy, working actress, very fulfilled in her craft on this particular week.

But how was her publicity muscle working? I asked her how many industry calls she made. How many emails did she send promoting herself, and, more importantly, how many of those calls and emails were follow-ups to previous calls? They won’t remember you the first time, and they might not remember you the second or third time… but following up again and again is how actors get results.

You need to train both muscles, and yes, they are muscles. You already know about actor muscles, chops, skills, etc. We talk about that a lot. So how are your promoting skills? Are you training those muscles? What are you doing? How regular and how efficient is it? Do you enjoy it? How are you engaged in that area of your professional development? With the world of social media at our fingertips, self-promotion is even more accessible than it has ever been before. Use it to your advantage, and stay in the best promotional shape you can. More to follow… be well.

Leather Sofas vs. Fabric, Pros and Cons of Each

When choosing an important piece of upholstered furniture, we usually have two options.

We either have fabric or leather.

While each one has its merits, let chart a few of the benefits and negatives of each one.

Pieces upholstered in fabrics have many more options to create the look and feel of a softer, sophisticated, or even a romantic setting.

Linen and velvet upholstered pieces seem to be a bit more sophisticated, while using chenille and heartier cottons can be casual and very family friendly. And at times, they are a bit more affordable.

On the other side, fabrics can require a bit more care. While simply vacuuming can help with the longevity of a piece, scotch guarding is a great way to add a protective layer. But honestly, no fabric is truly impervious to dirt and stains. Red wine, for example, might never come out of your dining chairs.

When it comes to leather, you need to know there are many grades and a few types to use.

Genuine leather has many grades and price points. Normally the higher the grade, the more costly the piece which can hinder some us from purchasing. There is also a bi-cast leather which feels a little firm due to a polyurethane finish. Lower grade leathers are usually used with this process. At times leather furniture can come off as cold and sterile depending on the style.

On the positive side, leather furniture can be much easier to keep clean. Simply using a damp cloth will remove most any dirt, dust or even a spill. It is also great for people with pets as it can be stain resistant and help with allergies. No matter which one works for you, be sure to do a little homework on each before making that purchase.

Our first PRISM was created out of love. We love our community of beautiful artistry. And so we wanted to bring that community together to create a moment. That first moment we called PRISM. Now, almost two years later, our community has grown and PRISM has grown. And so we are efflorescence.

Why did you choose to do it in the Penthouse of NoHo?

The open space is beautiful, the windows allowing an even larger community to enjoy, than those inside who got tickets, an open space for creativity, and the ceilings allow us to fly.

Through art we find life and through light we find PRISM.

I look forward to taking a breath with you all; and then seeing what happens.

See you at The Penthouse of NoHo this weekend!

Monday we say “Happy Napping Day, North Hollywood!”

Well, it isn’t really a bank holiday but the NoHo Arts District dot Com team treats it as one. We think it couldn’t come at a better time, after Daylight Savings/Sleep Stealing/You Stole My Hour Time. So Monday (03/14/16) we say “Happy Napping Day, North Hollywood!”

Hey! Did you know?

The California State Assembly is trying to get rid of the spring forward/fall back hour change. Assembly Bill 2496 would end the practice in California that became a law that voters approved way back in 1949! Read more HERE.

Founded by Boston University professor William Anthony and his wife Camille in 1999, Napping Day is the unofficial holiday set aside to help people adjust to Daylight Saving Time and to highlight the health and productivity benefits of napping.

They have written two widely acclaimed books, The Art of Napping and The Art of Napping at Work,  which explain their findings on the value of a nice nap.

According to the power nap couple, napping helps in the following ways:

1. Napping improves mood – makes you feel better
2. Napping improves performance – makes you more productive
3. Napping is no cost – no expensive clothes or equipment needed
4. Napping is no sweat – no shower needed
5. Napping is self prescribed – no doctor’s orders needed
6. Napping is non-fattening – you cannot eat while napping
7. Napping is a non-invasive procedure – no one does anything to you
8. Napping has no dangerous side effects – unless you are driving

“We chose this particular Monday because Americans are more ‘nap-ready’ than usual after losing an hour of sleep to daylight savings time,” William Anthony said in the Boston University news release announcing the holiday.

When we are forced to “spring forward,” we lose that precious hour so it’s much easier than normal to nap. We can all relate to that 3:30 mid-afternoon blah, especially after a bad night’s sleep with one less hour on the clock. Since most of us are at work, we must settle for the power nap, a 20 to 30 minute snooze. It’s just a quickie to rejuvenate your mind and body.

Remember Seinfeld’s George Costanza made a bed under his desk? Well, here are some other ways to nap at work:

  • Try a bathroom stall (take off your shoes so they won’t know who is in the stall)
  • Inventory/stock room is usually not frequented much.
  • Duck in the office of an employee out sick
  • Take the “stairs” is something most people don’t do…bring something comfortable to sit on.

In Bangladesh and Indian Bengal it is called bhat-ghum, literally meaning “rice-sleep.” Spaniards take their infamous siestas and Germans enjoy ein Schläfchen. In China and Taiwan it is called wujiao. Most Chinese schools have a half-hour nap programmed straight after lunch. And best of all, Japanese businesses have created “Nap Rooms” for their employees.

So Los Angelenos join the rest of the world in celebrating the art of the nap! Close your office door, roll up your jacket and take a snooze under your desk.

If your boss asks you what you’re doing. It’s simple, ask: “Didn’t you know it’s National Napping Day?”

Happy Napping!

Get ready for #sitNoHo, NoHo!

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT WAS POSTPONED. WE HAD THE CHANCE TO “SIT” VIRTUALLY WITH STEPHEN VIA THE YOUTUBE STREAM. STAY TUNED FOR MORE EVENTS AT THE PENTHOUSE OF NOHO MARCH 18 & 19.

The Penthouse Artist Haven of NoHo Celebrates Spring Equinox with an Indoor Festival & Artist Collaboration

WHEN: March 18th & 19th – 12pm-12am
WHERE: The Basement/Penthouse of NoHo 5259 Lankershim Blvd. Unit C NoHo Arts District, CA 91601

Some call March, March Madness and that madness can be whatever we want. Is it mad to just sit and be? Nope. There’s a movement happening in NoHo called #sitNoHo from Stephen Beitler at The Penthouse. It attempts what many think the impossible.

“What will happen to us if we attempt to be present in this chaotic world of ours? Can we be present, even as we live-stream, have yoga at 10:30am, and talk with students all around the world? Can we be present when a stranger walks in the door? Can we still be present when we have a climactic event; PRISM, on the 19th? Come and BE with me. “ – Stephen Beitler

So what is #sitNoHo?

Twelve hours a day, six days a week, for the entire month of March, join Stephen Beitler and the folks at The Penthouse, in person, or LIVE streaming online, anywhere in the world.

Setting up aerial silks, a meditation cushion, and a yoga mat., the doors will be open, our camera set up, and any who wishes, can join. Hold space for those who are present, to be present. To learn from our past in order to let it go, and the future; fearless. We can sit, we can discuss, we will do yoga, and perhaps we will fly. Maybe you will bring a guitar, your voice, or a dance. Maybe we will teach, meditate, or dance. Who knows? All I know is I am excited to find out. Monday-Saturday 9am-9pm for all of March the invitation will stand. It costs nothing to sit, but taking the time to sit, is priceless. If you can’t make it in person, join us online. If you can’t make it online, take a class with us later. But, take the time. Take the time to just be. And, see. what. happens… #sitNoHo

Here’s how you can join in:

WHEN: Monday – Saturday, 9AM-9PM
WHERE: The Penthouse of NoHo
5259 Lankershim Blvd. Unit C
NoHo Arts District 91601

Who is Stephen Beitler?

I don’t know. And, I may never know, and that to me is the fun. I have been called many things. Crazy, eccentric, weird, teacher, guide, healer, muse, guru… (that last one is like nails on a chalkboard to me) But, the only thing I have been called that has ever stuck is; Catalyst. I was spending time with some friends who are chemists, and one an M.D. I asked them “What is your definition of a catalyst?” Here is how they responded:

Something that participates in a reaction and is not consumed or destroyed by it. It does this by lowering the activation energy required of a reaction.

Basically; a catalyst allows for change and moving forward with less consumption of energy by both the catalyst and the chemicals being catalyzed.

How did you get the idea to do #sitNoHo for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, for the whole month of March?

I was meditating one day and had a sudden flash of inspiration to go down to Venice beach, setup two yoga mats and a sign that read “#sit?” Went to my partner and said “I don’t know why, but I need to go down to Venice and do this crazy thing for a few hours, will you come with me?” Most people just took pictures as they walked by, amused by the sign and my advanced yoga. Then after about 6 hours, when we were about to pack up, a girl came up and said “I need to learn to be zen like you; can you teach me?” “Would you like to sit with me?” I asked. “Yes” she replied “How do I just sit?” “We take a breath.” I replied. She then spills out a whole story that her friend was going to kill herself, but instead called her and she asked to go to the beach… She asks me “How do I convince her not to kill herself, that life is worth living?” I am stunned into silence, and so I reply “We just; take a conscious breath.” I still didn’t know what #sit was, but I knew it was something. And, so, I have done the installation for longer and longer periods of time. Being Present; taking and conscious breath, and then see what happens.

So you’ve been called showstopping. Where do these quotes come from?

“Virtuosically performed by Stephen Beitler.” – The New Yorker
“Showstopping.” – LA Weekly

#sitNoHo March 2016 www.nohoartsdistrict.com

The New Yorker was from my work on Hopscotch, where I was on a motorcycle outside of a limo going 50mph, having a live scene over radio with a person in the car. We did the 10 minute scene over 240 times in 10 days. My scene partner and I commented on how immediate every scene was. He said “Well, of course we are present and immediate. Your life is literally in danger!” I replied “Well… I would love to be that present all the time, but let’s take out the life being in danger part.” #sitNoHo is an extension of that work. Can we be present in simple times, as well as the dangerous. And, perhaps be present all the time, and not require the drama of our lives ending to help us be present.

The LA Weekly review came from an aerial duet in the middle of a show for Hollywood Fringe. “Showstopping aerial dance performed by… Stephen Beitler.” Both of these reviews only happened after I began applying the work of breathing to be present with my art as a performer.

Want to take a class with Stephen?

You can swing by The Penthouse of NoHo at 10:30AM for the month of March for #sitNoHo. And/or you can start by doing his 30 days of yoga online. He does a new, free, online class every Friday on Youtube.

{youtube}qnvNPuoS-do{/youtube}

Is there anything you would like to let NoHo readers know? Take a conscious breath, try to be present in every moment, and just see what happens.

Part psychological sexual thriller and part classic mystery, Backgammon is about a young man, Lucian, who gets drawn into the web of two slightly older bohemians, with disastrous results. The story opens when Andrew invites Lucian and his girlfriend Elizabeth for a weekend getaway. Miranda (Andrew’s older sister) is at the mansion, however they didn’t expect her Baudelaire-obsessed boyfriend Gerald to show up as well. Overwhelmed by Gerald’s antics and the constant irritating horseplay with Miranda, Andrew and Elizabeth split. Lucian, however, decides to stay, as a simmering, sexual tension develops between him and the flighty, flirtatious Miranda. When Gerald explodes after losing everything during an alcohol-fueled poker game with Lucian, Miranda finally gives him the boot. But as she and Lucian begin to dance around each other, their surroundings show threatening signs that Gerald may never have left.

Backgammon Screening March 11 and 12 in NoHo Arts District www.nohoartsdistrict.com

Orvañanos explains his goals for the film: “I was drawn to Bloody Baudelaire (the original novella on which Backgammon is based) because of the way Raymond Russell creates a claustrophobic and ominous atmosphere full of mystery — and does so with just a few characters in close quarters. In creating this film, I wanted to build on this dynamic, heightening the sense of mystery and intimating the danger and violence rather than overtly depict them. We are so used to seeing movies with violence graphically portrayed, so it was refreshing to create a film that focuses more on the potential for violence rather than violence itself. With Backgammon, we chose to highlight the flawed characters and the friction between them, friction that could lead to violence.”

The film was written, directed and produced by Orvañanos and produced by Colin Stanfield, Miguel Boccaloni and Chris Moore. R.B. Russell is an English author who has had three collections of short stories published Putting the Pieces in Place and Literary Remains and Leave Your Sleep. Orvañanos has directed two award-winning short films, “Ya No Estamos Juntos (We Are No Longer Together)” and “No Pasó Nada (Nothing Happened)” which collectively screened at over 30 international film festivals.

Yes, Girls Can Do Science, Math and Whatever Else They Want.

NoHo Library’s Women in Science Panel Discussion

According to the National Girls Collaborative Project:

“Female scientists and engineers are concentrated in different occupations than are men, with relatively high shares of women in the social sciences (58%) and biological and medical sciences (48%) and relatively low shares in engineering (13%) and computer and mathematical sciences (25%) (NSF, Science & Engineering Indicators, 2014).

Women make up 47% of the total U.S. workforce, but are much less represented in particular science and engineering occupations (U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, Women in the Labor Force: A Databook, 2014). For example:

▪ 39% of chemists and material scientists are women;
▪ 27.9% of environmental scientists and geoscientists are women;
▪ 15.6% of chemical engineers are women;
▪ 12.1% of civil engineers are women;
▪ 8.3% of electrical and electronics engineers are women;
▪ 17.2% of industrial engineers are women; and
▪ 7.2% of mechanical engineers are women.”

The numbers look a bit dismal. But this is changing and we can do better. According to Girls, Inc., “For girls to truly succeed in STEM, they need a support system: adults who believe in their abilities; women who are in these fields to act as role models; and other girls who share their interests.” Here’s the Girls, Inc. Tip Sheet for encouraging young girls in their interest in STEM.

No, women in science isn’t an opening line of a joke. In honor of Women’s History Month, the NoHo Arts District dot com team would like to highlight the NoHo Library’s panel discussion on Women in Science, women working in the fields of robotics, research, medicine and computer programming.

Meet the women panelists, ask questions and learn more about STEM studies – “Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.”

Deborah Anisman-Posner, the manager of the Virology Core Lab at the UCLA AIDS Institute, began her career as a technician studying cytotoxicity (how the immune system responds to the presence of tumors). As a researcher for the UCLA Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics, she studied growth factors produced by human leukemia cells. With the identification of AIDS in the early 1980s, her lab switched over to studying the effect of HIV on the developing (pediatric) immune system. Presently she manages a laboratory that provides services and special technologies to UCLA and outside researchers, assisting them with their research mostly in HIV but also other cancer research.

Marissa Thompson, Young Adult Librarian at the North Hollywood Regional Library, joined the Los Angeles Public Library system in Fall 2015. She is also a member of the faculty at College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, as an Adjunct Librarian. Growing up, Marissa had a strong interest in STEAM topics, from archeology to marine biology to astronomy. Her desire to learn more about these sciences is what drew her to libraries as a child and encouraged a lifelong appreciation for the services that libraries provide. In addition to her library work, Marissa is an avid tea drinker and a lover of graphic novels.

Samantha Sim is currently one of the three captains of the North Hollywood Robotics Team, also known as NohoRobo or Team 3328. She was selected as a captain at the end of her senior year and took on the responsibility of managing the business side of the team. She took part not only in building a functional robot, but also in managing thousands of dollars worth of funds and properly budgeting the team’s finances to ensure the team’s success. She has had the opportunity of working with many professionals from Comcast NBCUniversal and Walt Disney Imagineering, which showed her many aspects of a career in S.T.E.M.

Janice Batzdorff, Adult Librarian, and Marissa Thompson, Young Adult Librarian, both joined the staff of the North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Library in November 2015. For their first Women’s Heritage Month celebration, inspired by the library’s namesake, they decided to focus on Women in Science. Panelists include a high school senior who is the captain of the North Hollywood High School Robotics Team, as well as professional women in the fields of psychiatry, AIDS research, computer programming and software quality assurance.

Eco Therapy and Healing

It is said that when we don’t spend enough time outdoors, we can develop Nature Deficit Disorder.

One of the new trends in health and wellness and the medical industry is something called “Eco Therapy”. Sometimes know as “Nature Therapy”, it uses the natural world and the environment for physical and psychological healing.

Recent research shows that aromas that we breath in from plants when we’re outdoors in nature causes positive chemical reactions to occur within our body system. Things like just simply holding moist soil from the ground in your hand for 20 minutes can significantly improve your mood due to the bacteria in the soil.

We find many Doctors now pulling out a prescription pad and scribbling instructions to their patients—which park their obese or diabetic or anxious or depressed patient should visit, on which days, and for how long—just as though they were prescribing medication!

Eco Therapy comes in many forms, including garden and farm therapies; animal-facilitated therapies; wilderness experiences; environmental justice practices; reconnecting with place and ancestors; ecospirituality, and more. These and other ecotherapy healing methods are now being used in many settings, including schools, nursing homes, therapy offices, prisons and hospitals to treat a wide variety of presenting problems such as anxiety, depression, addictions and eco-anxiety.

I’m starting to get active with our local parks here in Los Angeles, bringing awareness to Eco Therapy and the importance of maintaining and creating nature trails and green spaces throughout our city for Angelinos to use. If you’d like to get involved go to http://lacountyparkneeds.org/

This year is the 100th Anniversary of our National Parks here in America. The National Park Service and the National Park Foundation have created a great interactive campaign/website called “Find my Park” where people can share stories and tips and research travel opportunities on their favorite National Parks. Go to http://findyourpark.com/ and explore today!
