Zombie’s Going to Edinburgh

Bloody Hell! Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group Launches GoFundMe Campaign to Take Urban Death to the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

With fortune favoring the bold, Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group has announced a GoFundMe campaign to bring their signature show, Urban Death, to the 71st Annual Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the largest theater festival in the world.

Urban Death is Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group’s (ZJU) most recognizable show, crafting a series of horror vignettes designed to shock, delight and titillate audiences. Co-directed and created by Zombie Joe and Jana Wimer in 2005 with music by Christopher Reiner, Urban Death brings sell-out crowds to ZJU for performance after performance and year after year.

“Bringing Urban Death to Edinburgh would be a dream come true,” says Zombie Joe. “But we can’t do it alone. We’re asking for $40,000 to cover our costs for registration, venue, housing, flights, and expenses for our actors for the month-long festival. We’re taking ten people, which breaks down to $4,000 per person.”

“We love our community and we’re reaching out to people who love Urban Death, who love Los Angeles theater, or just those who love horror,” says Jana Wimer “Going to Edinburgh is a massive undertaking, but we know how wonderful our show is, and we can’t wait to perform at the biggest theatrical showcase in the world.”

In addition to playing to audiences in Los Angeles at Urban Death’s annual spring and fall runs (during the Halloween season guests must walk through a haunted maze to reach the show), the show has played in New York City, the Midsummer Scream Horror Convention, and Cape Town, South Africa.

“There may be many spooky stage productions around this Halloween, but few will approach the level of this one.” – New York Times

“Shrugging off this theatrical experience means missing the chance to share a room with cannibals, apparitions, sideshow-worthy freaks and gory scenes so close you can smell the latex. Sure, we love movies, but zombie attacks take on a whole new energy when they’re five feet away from you.” – Fangoria

“Zombie Joe’s Underground and Halloween go together like Norman Bates and motels…Although not for children or weak stomachs, Urban Death is perversely enjoyable in its necromantic way.” – LA Times

Fans and supporters can donate to the GoFundMe page by visiting https://www.gofundme.com/urbandeath, where they can watch a YouTube video of Zombie and Jana asking for donations (along with a few of their spooky friends). On the page donors can choose from a list of perks and prizes for their money. Prizes range from a $5 shout-out on Facebook to a $5,000 private performance of Urban Death for the donor and up to 50 of their closest friends. “Hell, if you donate $20,000 we’ll fly you to Edinburgh to see the show,” says Zombie Joe.

“This is a huge step, and one we’re thrilled to be taking,” says Jana Wimer. “We’re calling on the good will of our fans and friends to join the Urban Death family and bring us to Scotland this August.”

“Urban Death is a visceral experience that has no equal,” says Zombie Joe. “And we can’t wait to share it with the world!”

Correction Time: The Market Takes a Hit

Correction Time: The Market Takes a Hit

After reaching all-time highs on January 26, 2018, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 went into a two-week slide that saw both stock indexes drop by more than 10%, a decline that is typically considered a market correction.1

Analysts have been saying for several years that the long, booming bull market was overvalued and due for a correction, so the drop was not a surprise in the big picture.2 And even after the 10% plunge, the Dow was up 19% over the previous 12 months, and the S&P 500 was up 12.5%.3

It’s natural to be concerned about this kind of shift, but more important to maintain perspective and focus on your long-term goals. It may be helpful to consider some of the reasons behind the surge of market volatility.

Too Much of a Good Thing?

The initial trigger for the downturn was a better-than-expected jobs report on February 2 that helped drive the Dow down more than 2.5%, a significant decline considering the unusually low volatility in 2017 and the beginning of 2018. The economy added 200,000 jobs in January, marking the 88th straight month of job creation, the longest such run in U.S. history. Wages rose by 2.9% over the previous January, the highest year-over-year increase since the end of the recession in June 2009. And the unemployment rate held steady at 4.1% for the fourth straight month, the lowest level in 17 years.4

Although the report was great news for U.S. workers, on Wall Street the rosy jobs picture generated fears of higher inflation that might drive the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more quickly than anticipated. At its December 2017 meeting, the Federal Open Market Committee signaled its intention to raise the benchmark federal funds rate three times in 2018, bringing it up to a range of 2.0% to 2.25%. Theoretically, these changes have been priced into the market, but the strong jobs report made it more likely that the Fed will follow through on its projection and possibly execute further increases if inflation heats up.5

Stocks, Bonds, and U.S. Debt

Higher interest rates rattle the stock market because investors are more likely to move assets out of risky stocks and into more stable bonds, as fixed-income yields become more attractive. Higher rates not only mean increased yields on new bonds but also on existing bonds, as prices are pushed downward to make yields competitive. In addition, the prospect of inflation tends to push bond prices lower and yields higher, because inflation erodes the purchasing power of fixed-income payments.

One reason for the initial reaction to the January jobs report expanding into a full-blown correction is that bond yields were already rising due to other factors. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note — a bedrock of global financial markets — has been rising since tax legislation was proposed in the fall of 2017, and the yield reached a four-year high of 2.85% on the day the jobs report was released.6–7 Although the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was generally welcomed on Wall Street, bond traders have been concerned that increased Treasury sales to pay for the $1.5 trillion tax cuts will erode bond prices. This concern was exacerbated by the bipartisan budget deal that further increased deficit spending.8

The Treasury is working to finance higher debt at the same time the Federal Reserve is unwinding its recession-era bond-buying program. With the Fed reducing its bond portfolio, the Treasury must sell more bonds to the public to cover growing deficits. The Treasury recently announced the first increase in bond sales since 2009.9

The question is who will buy these bonds and what are they willing to pay for them? A weak dollar has made Treasuries less appealing to foreign governments, which hold more than 44% of U.S. government debt. With the Treasury market depending more on U.S. investors, supply may be outpacing demand — illustrated by a tepid Treasury auction on February 7.10

The Long View

Although mounting government debt is a serious concern, the stock and bond markets are both driven in the long term by the economy, and the United States looks to be hitting its stride after a long, slow recovery. The global economy, which has been even slower to recover, is coming back as well.

A correction may be disturbing, but it can strengthen the market in the long term by returning equity values to levels that are more in line with corporate earnings and less dependent on investor exuberance. A corrected market may also be less vulnerable to overreaction. On February 14, the Dow and the S&P 500 closed up more than 1.2%, despite a consumer report that showed higher-than-expected inflation. Even with higher prices in January, core inflation (which excludes food and energy prices) is running at only 1.8%, still below the Fed’s 2% target rate.11

Of course, no one can predict the future, and you might see volatility for some time. The wisest course may be to remain patient and avoid making portfolio decisions based on emotion.

The return and principal value of stocks and bonds fluctuate with changes in market conditions. Shares, when sold, and bonds redeemed prior to maturity may be worth more or less than their original cost. U.S. Treasury securities are guaranteed by the federal government as to the timely payment of principal and interest.

The S&P 500 is an unmanaged group of securities that is considered representative of the U.S. stock market in general. The performance of an unmanaged index is not indicative of the performance of any specific investment. Individuals cannot invest directly in an index. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Actual results will vary.

William Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra @ Gray Studios

Jamaica Moon Productions and The GGC Players present: William Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra.”

I have to be honest with you, this is not my first time with this particular production of “Antony and Cleopatra.”

Under the masterful direction of Gloria Gifford, this very capable group of actors performed the tragedy late last year.  So you could say this is a bit of an encore, urged on, no doubt, by the very warm reception of the original produciton.

I think it’s acceptable to quote oneself,  so I will, from my previous review, and say that “Lets be absolutely clear here…this is not your grandma’s Shakespeare.”

Sure, it’s classically staged and the wardrobe is certainly period, especially for the ladies, and it runs fairly close to the RSC’s version coming in at a little over two hours, instead of the original text which is closer to four. But, that is where any real comparison to past traditional productions must end.  This “Antony and Cleopatra” is a blend of the old and the new.  The prose is rather magically interspersed with the kind of songs that rocked the world in the 70s…all soul and pain and heartbreak.  The story is played out in the same order, with the same dramatic beats, but swathes of dialogue and exposition are replaced with gyrating soldiers,  choruses of scantily clad slaves girls, and the occasional and quite lovely soaring sounds of a friendly eunuch.  Tony and Cleo let loose themselves too of course, quite spectacularly, and it only seems to heighten the intensity of their relationship.

The players themselves commit completely to the radical retelling of this classic and far too infrequently staged play.  Without their absolute belief, this daring kind of production would surely fall totally flat. But thankfully it does far, far from that.

The story of these two lovers is full of impending doom, violent ends, betrayal, obsession, unending loyalty and pointless sacrifice.  So the melding of funky and soul music with their moments of high drama is, in the end, a bit on the brilliant side.

If you can wrap your head around what’s going on and why, and let go of your inhibitions as much as these talented actors do on stage then you are in for a real treat. The Rocky Horror Show meets the Bard, a full on rock out homage to the dangers of mixing politics with passion and trading honor for fame.

These iconic characters were daring, brutal and unapologetic when they lived.

They tore each other apart with their love and the world burned around them…Romeo and Juliet with nukes.  Gloria Gifford’s rendering of Shakespeare’s “Antony and Cleopatra” is a flamboyant, furious and fabulous turn on the oldest of love stories…I highly recommend it.

A vintage night out, or just another Instagram opportunity?

A vintage night out, or just another Instagram opportunity?

Gone are the days when a simple trip to a bar, a bottle of beer and a good conversation made for a great night out. Nowadays, our evenings are centered around social media check-ins and documented by a number of selfies. Like moths to a flame, many tech-savvy millennials swarm to spaces, destinations and landscapes that fit perfectly into the equilateral square of the instagram frame.

Renowned stage designer and artist, Es Devlin, who has worked with everyone from Beyonce to Kayne West, has noted that many of her designs rely heavily on the consideration that they will be photographed, filtered and published on Instagram. Nowadays, it seems that we are designing the spaces around us, for the purpose of our online reality.

This is both a social and technological phenomenon, and proves that the screens of our smartphones may be the lens through which we view and choose what to do in our reality. But is this necessarily a bad thing? Shouldn’t we embrace art that encompasses and harnesses how we live in modern society? Or should we turn our back on the naivety and self-centred approval hunting that comes with the thrills of social media? Should we in fact be searching for something more from our nights out? Or is everything we see, in reality, just another photo opportunity?

Real-life experiences are often seen as more important than online statuses. And so, many people are looking for something special from their night out and more than just a pretty picture. Board game cafes, bowling alleys and bingo halls are popping up across the United States. Opting to take part in an activity or experience on your night out is rapidly becoming an attractive antidote to the scrolling screens of our social media pages.

Across North Hollywood, there are a number of alternative options for your night out. Vintage bowling, open-air cinemas and speak-easy cocktail bars, bring customers back in time to before the ‘gram’ and produce a serious sense of nostalgia. But why are the millennial generation seeking such experiences?

Firstly, it’s believed that millennials are the ‘wanderlust generation’. They avidly dream of past generations’ freedom from the judgement and global conscience. From our smartphones, we can view everything in the world, both past and present. This content overload may cause resentment for those who have or had it better.

Secondly, trips to the theater or amusement arcade are live experiences, which it’s said, most young people would rather use their cash on. With the options of owning a house under the age of 40 years old seeming unlikely for many millennials, most would rather spend their money on experiences which offer instant gratification.

A night at the bingo is often associated with the elderly. But, it is not a game of the past. Many contemporary club nights, bars and festivals now host this age-old Sunday night tradition. New forms of bingo have emerged, with dancing, music and booze often in the mix. Online socialising and gaming arguably has the ability to connect users from across the globe, at any time of day. Likewise, with more variety of games to choose from, there is something for everyone. Online sites like Oddschecker allow players to compare bonuses and offers from leading bingo sites. With so much on offer online, the leisure industry is going to extra lengths to get us to go out, rather than stay in. Festivals are expanding and shopping malls are featuring art installations, in order to compete with the online market. Adding more and more experience, aims to get us to look up from our phones.

But can we ever distance reality from our lives online? Live events are all marketed through social media. Images and visuals allow us to recall similar feelings we may have had at a similar event, before making that all-important decision on how to spend our Saturday night. Reviewing apps and image searching allow us make this decision. No matter how much will be experienced once we’re there, it’s probably already been published on someone else’s Instagram. And the effect of this, ultimately takes the ‘retro’ out of ‘retro night out’.

Monica Lloyd: Like rock be formed. Like rock be patient.

Monica Lloyd: Like rock be formed. Like rock be patient.

I don’t usually do an artist spotlight, but Monica Lloyd caught my attention at the Conception arts show on February 8, 2018 at Iron Triangle.

Monica Lloyd is a fresh Angeleno transplant from Michigan whose work has promise for future solo exhibitions. Humble but confident, Lloyd combines the detail and energy of nature in her work that LA is missing but longs for – both in terms of city space and presentation.

Lloyd draws inspiration for her collection from the resistance, growth, and evolution in nature.

While political parallels can be drawn, Lloyd emphasizes individual focus and gradual, assured change. While these themes can be extended to current societal needs, Lloyd draws from her own life and her intent isn’t to preach. Regardless, her work (and the intent behind her work) does bring a sense of peace many people are missing in their lives today. Lloyd aspires, “I hope this work provides a quiet space for one to wonder and wander.

In her own life, Lloyd acknowledges that growth may seem slow when growth is placed under a microscope.

Gradually, however, growth inches along one day at a time. Lloyd reminds us that, in retrospect, we can look back and see the rolling expanse of change within our own, textured life stories.

“There are patterns that occur throughout time and are part of a cycle that never seems to end. This cycle moves and shifts in unexpected directions, but ends up repeating itself in a variety of ways, and throughout time. These patterns exist infinitely, on a massive, sweeping scale, as well as on a smaller, more intimate, and even microscopic scale. We see a process occurring, with themes of creation, growth, evolution, destruction, and death. These are all events that happen repeatedly over time within the universe, and in the lives and bodies of all living beings, large and small. The same way that matter is made up of infinite atoms, every human life is made up of thousands/millions of tiny moments. We are shaped by the compilation of moments we’ve experienced, and by the struggles we’ve pushed through.” -Monica Lloyd

Lloyd produces the thoughtful artwork I appreciate, and that nascent artists frequently speed past in their quest for relevance. Obvious hours go into creating the intricate pieces Lloyd produces, and Lloyd’s devotion of time is apparent when you step close to her work.

Bridging the gap between space and energy, and people and nature, Lloyd expresses, “It…seems that the closer we look, and the deeper we move, we come to realize the profound similarities we have with each other, and with nature.”

The Pink Hulk: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest presents: “The Pink Hulk: One Woman’s Journey to Find the Superhero Within”

Written and performed by Valerie David

Directed by Padraic Lillis

This is a play about one woman and two cancers.

Valerie David was diagnosed with Lymphoma in 1999 and then in 2014 she found a lump in her breast. I cannot imagine how hard it is to have cancer once, but twice…unfathomable.

Ms. David fought hard and is able to perform this remarkable play because of her strength and the strength and love of those around her.  Through this play she describes in vivid and often hilarious detail how cancer affects the more intimate moments of your life.  Where some might be thinking of the pain to come, Ms. David, probably due to her previous experience with cancer, was more worried about the immediate effects cancer would have on her love life.  So she takes us through her attempts to fulfill herself physically…while she still can.  Of course there’s plenty of time spent on her treatment and her cycling a marathon after she recently finished her final treatments, how she took control of her hair loss by shaving her own head, and all the support and love that surrounded her and still does. But the joy of this performance is in the honesty and the openness and the wonderfully warm and inclusive woman that is Valerie David.

thumbnail image7

She shares with us her highs and lows, her pain and her strength as well as her fear.  There’s a lot to take in with this play.  Ms. David takes possession of the stage and doesn’t let up, as if the need to share her story with us is the most important thing in her life.  It’s a perfect way to show us her triumph over this darkness, by sharing the transforming light within herself.

This play has been touring the U.S., and this particular performance was her first on the West Coast. But I’m sure she will be back and there is plenty of information on the continuing tour on her website: http://pinkhulkplay.com/

Ms. David has the kind of infectious spirit and deeply inspiring story that needs more than a one-woman show…how about a series?

I highly recommend you catch a show. You won’t be sorry.

Solofest – My Janis

The Whitefire Theatre, Solofest Presents: “My Janis”

Written by, directed and starring:  Arianna Veronesi

Janis Joplin, alone in her hotel room in Austin Texas, living close to her family, and in treatment for her addictions, gets a call from an old friend, Chet Helms, now a big-time manager in San Fransisco inviting her to sing with a band.

Janis takes some convincing, knowing herself and her affliction.  But for her life wasn’t complete without music and so flew to San Fransisco, joined the band and the rest is music legend.

I was lucky enough to see this play at the Hollywood Fringe last year and it has evolved, incorporating a little more of Janis’s relationship with her mother, perhaps a giving us more depth and more insight into Janis’s troubled mind.

Arianna Veronesi, the writer and performer of this riveting play, has taken just a few moments of Janis Joplin’s life, an hour or two of one day in fact, and turned it into a close examination of what turned out to be a crucial choice she made.  One that would set her on a path to fame, to a life full of spectacular triumphs and terrible lows.  A journey that would lead to her death ultimately…all set in motion one afternoon in an Austin hotel room.

When we look back on our lives it’s easy to see how one decision impacts profoundly the path we take and often who we take it with.  This play, or performance piece really, is a heartbreaking and fascinating glimpse of this tragic woman’s soul and Ms Veronesi captures her completely.  She bears an astonishing resemblance and recreates so perfectly the essence of Janis Joplin.  The shyness and the openness, the laughter and the struggle, her absolute vulnerability and her raw, exquisite talent.

We watch transfixed as she wrestles with this decision, knowing that she would never be able to resist the destructive lifestyle of the music business, yet knowing also that remaining in Texas and turning her back on what gave her meaning and purpose was an impossible choice to make.

“My Janis” is a highly accomplished piece, extremely voyeuristic, but unique and rather wonderful, delicate and touching.  Janis Joplin is an icon.

Her music is still relevant and important and there has been no one like her since.  It’s amazing that more isn’t known about her, but this play gives us a unique window into her world and if you get the chance to see it I highly recommend that you do.

Solofest – Shattered

The Whitefire Theatre, Solofest Presents: Shattered

Written and Performed by Diana Varco

Directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson

Diana Varco has taken a terrible and sadly all too common event in life… rape…and transformed it into this powerful, inspiring, funny and profoundly touching play.

“Shattered” recounts the story of Diana’s journey through the trauma of sexual assault.  Her recovery is still ongoing of course, the rebuilding of herself and her life, but Diana has the strength and indeed the sheer nerve to construct a performance from the worst moments in her life, to heal herself and to show us all that something good can come from something evil.

And what a performance this is, truly epic.

Diana plays over 35 characters, some real and some manifestations of her self.  Her shame, her fear, her panic and her security are just some of the incredibly defined and highly personal pieces of her “shattered” personality that posses her on stage.  Each of them, with profundity and grace and humor, reach out to us to share her struggle, to unburden and release her darker emotions in ways so effective that it has one holding one’s breath with awe.  I honestly cannot remember being so deeply moved by a performance.  Diana’s play manages to inform, connect and heal.  She is absolutely hilarious and a brilliant comic actor.  She manipulates her face and body into unrecognizable characters, morphing moment to moment magically and magnificently with barely a breath between.

I can totally appreciate and applaud this brilliant creation, a way of informing her experience.  She ruthlessly exorcises her demons on stage and I can only tell you that this beautiful soul has completely blown me away.  I cannot imagine how it must feel to be destroyed by rape, I have never experienced it myself, but I know so many people who have and need to find support and their own way of recovery.  I will absolutely tell them to see Diana Varco’s show…and that is a very big recommendation indeed.

Yes, this play is about trauma, but it is also about triumph.  A triumph of spirit, a long-fought victory over fear and the courage to share a story in the hopes that it will help heal us all.

If you have the opportunity to see this show take it.  We need to support each other, help heal each other and show no fear.  Diana Varco is my new hero…

Black Panther; The Phantom Thread; and some “Tenth” nominee thoughts

Black Panther; The Phantom Thread; and some “Tenth” nominee thoughts by Mike Peros

Black Panther, the newest entry in the occasionally marvelous Marvel series of superhero films, is certainly not the first movie featuring a black superhero, but is certainly the most high-profile and the most successful.

Much of the credit belongs to writer/director Ryan Coogler, who has transferred some of the angst, ambivalence and humanity of his earlier Fruitvale Station and Creed into the Marvel Universe. Coogler has also brought along the star of these earlier films, Michael P. Jordan, and that is perhaps his best move of all.

For those who are still (!) unfamiliar with the basic set-up, Wakanda is this (fictional) remote country in Africa which sits on a bed of their most precious natural resource, vibranium, which allows Wakanda to be more technologically advanced than the rest of the world—even though, to the rest of the world, they’re just this “third-world” country. T’Challa (Chadwick Bozeman) is the new king of Wakanda—and also the superhero Black Panther when he deigns to don the attire which makes him pretty darn invincible. He presides over his kingdom (despite challenges both outer and inner) along with proud mother Angela Bassett, uncle and advisor Forest Whitaker, his sullen but somewhat supportive brother (Daniel Kaluuya from Get Out), a very fierce, patriotic fighter Okoye (Danai Gurira—a veritable force of nature, not to be reckoned with), and an even more loyal (and loving) spy/activist/love interest Nakia (Lupita Nyong’O). Outside this technological paradise, all Hell is waiting to come in, courtesy of a murderous arms dealer (Andy Serkis) and an aggrieved, violent young man christened Killmonger (Michael P. Jordan) who has a particular ax to grind with Wakanda.

Without spilling too much more, Black Panther succeeds for a number of reasons. Many of the plot threads are cleverly drawn and well-developed, whether it’s the friction between various factions in Wakanda, T’Challa’s coming to terms with the responsibilities of being king (and Wakanda’s place in the world order), the ideological conflict between T’Chall and Nakia (who wants to Wakanda to be less “Wakanda First” and more “let’s use our strength to help others”) and especially, the clash between T’Challa and Killmonger (the sins of the father…). This is particularly compelling, in large part thanks to Jordan’s riveting, charismatic portrayal of a man who wants his due—for himself, and his entire race.  The writing and Jordan’s flawless playing lend this Marvel villain a good deal of depth—something not readily apparent in these epics.  Black Panther is far from perfect: the plot thread concerning T’Challa’s brother is not properly developed and the climactic action sequence is both a little too frenetic and a bit anti-climactic at that. Nevertheless, Black Panther is well worth seeing, and even provides some food for thought.

The Phantom Thread

Daniel Day-Lewis is calling The Phantom Thread his final film (at least as an actor), and at least, he’s going out on an interesting (if not totally plausible) note. In this “last” collaboration with Paul Thomas Anderson, Day-Lewis is haughty, fastidious fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock, who creates designs in the house he shares with his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville, who delivers the film’s best performance). Into their lives comes the waitress Alma (Vicky Kreps), who intrigues and enchants Woodcock, until she moves in—and brings with her enough charms and quirks to both beguile and irritate a man who lives for nothing except order. It’s a beautiful, sumptuous film to watch and to listen to, but the events and relationships begin to leave any semblance of plausibility in the dust. Yet the skill of the actors and the assured direction do keep one watching. However is it Best Picture worthy—let’s just say I’m dubious.

Speaking of Best Picture, you’ll notice that even though ten nominees are possible, the Academy has seen fit to bestow this nomination to only nine contenders, leaving one to ponder, if there had been a tenth, what would it be? One is perhaps The Big Sick, which received plenty of critical love, yet only received a screenplay nod; however the warmth of its love story, the humor, the depth of feeling among all concerned, seem to warrant more love from Oscar—ditto Wonder, with its honest sentiment and strong writing and performances, and Wind River, with its subdued but affecting work from Jeremy Renner, and its trenchant look at prejudice, justice and tolerance lurking underneath a murder mystery set in the frozen Wyoming wilderness. These are just a few—no doubt there are several others.

Zootopia

Zootopia

This is a brilliant well rounded 108-minute animation which offers a thoughtful, inclusive message that is as rich and timely as it is sumptuous. With all this in it, it remains funny enough to keep the younger viewers entertained. Who would compile a list of the best animations of 2016 and not mention Zootopia?

If you haven’t watched it yet it is not too late to check it out. Zootopia is a cinematic classic that is based on a modern mammal metropolis city like no other. The city is comprised of neighbourhoods like frigid Tundratown and ritzy Sahara Square. A place where no matter what you are, from the smallest shrew to the biggest elephant all animals can be anything. That is what Zootopia is all about.

Being the first bunny on the police force, rookie Officer Judy Hopps discovered that it is not so easy to enforce the law to the big and tough animals. With a big determination to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case. She didn’t care even if it meant partnering with a fast-talking scam artist fox, Nick Wilde, to solve the mystery.

Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia, is a comedy, adventure and action, animation with a PG rating (for some thematic elements, rude humour and action). It was directed by Byron Howard and Rich Moore the directors of Tangled and The Simpsons respectively and we all agree that it was a job well-done. The co-director of this masterpiece is Jared Bush (“Penn Zero: Part-Time Hero”). Jared Bush and Phil Johnston are the writers of Zootopia. It was first released in theatres on the 4th of March 2016.

There are very few movies that manage to appeal to the children through accidental humour and also to adults through stimulating conversation but Zootopia is one of them.  The movie would make a great animal themed aus pokies because of the awesome storyline. However, posts won’t be made available on big social media networks such as Facebook because is gambling and iGaming companies must stick to Facebook guidelines.

Definition of This at the Actors Workout Studio

Thea Grabiec and Fringe Theatre Company in association with Actors Workout Studio present: “Definition of This” running through March 11.

Written by Thea Grabiec

Directed by Stacy Ann Raposa & Thea Grabiec

A famous and successful playwright suffers the ultimate career-ending accusation…plagiarism.

As a writer, I can tell you that this sends a chill of fear through me, even though I have absolutely no need to be fearful.  Plagiarism and its horrifying repercussions are something that can absolutely destroy a career, whether or not the accusations are even true.  It is here that we begin the play.  Several months after these life-changing events, Emma, the playwright, is struggling to complete a new play, one that she hopes will save her reputation and her theatre company.  The actors of her company all still believe in her, even though they too have suffered by being blacklisted for their involvement, and are counting on her to revive all their careers.

thumbnail IMG 1468

But this is not the only ‘drama’ in Emma’s life.

She originally formed the theatre company with her lover Amy and it was after Emma suffered an in vitro miscarriage that Amy left her.  Emma, distraught, lonely and hormonal, takes up with the lighting designer of her theatre, Anthony, and several months later, unbeknownst to Emma, Amy returns, discovered their relationship and decided to seek revenge.

This play is about lies.  It’s about the pressure to succeed, the lure of fame and money and how when something comes too easy, too soon, it isn’t always due to luck and talent.  What would any of us do for love?  How can we trust our instincts when our own motives are clouded with insecurities and self-doubt.  This play has the effect of making us all do a double take on our motivations and the reasons for our life goals.  Are we living someone else’s life?  How well can we ever know those we love?  So many questions.  But that’s how I left when the play was over.  With these kinds of question going around and around in my head, which is good…I think.

thumbnail IMG 1517

This is a fascinating and, rather obviously, a thought-provoking play.

Everyone seems to have an agenda, some more obvious than others, but in the end, however well hidden, it seems clear that everyone is out for themselves and the one who is the most persecuted and probably the most guilty is ultimately the least to blame…which is odd ad refreshing.

“Definition of This” is exceedingly well written and complicated.  The characters are interesting and not at all simple and easy to know, but I like that.  The cast are all really wonderful, making the most out of their roles, filling the stage with the intimacy of a theatre company and the individual and familiar neurosis of artists.  It’s a satisfying romp through the very unglamorous world of plays and theatre and literary success and it leaves one with the distinct feeling that it’s one best avoided at all costs…note to self.

I highly recommend “Definition of This” at the Actors Workout Studio.  It’s a short run so don’t dawdle…

Jorja Smith “On My Mind” + “Beautiful Little Fools”

We’re listening to all of Jorja Smith’s music but here are two we were forced to choose: “On My Mind” and “Beautiful Little Fools”

Jorja Smith is soulful and jazzy and she has this brightness. She has a vocal range that makes you stop and listen. She’s a big star, but don’t just take our word for it, ask Bruno, Drake…or anyone who’s ever listened to her. You can hear her latest single “I Am” on the Kendrick Lamar-produced “Black Panther” soundtrack.  We first heard the sultry voice on Kali Uchis “Tyrant” and that was it. But we had to pick just one song. That was impossible so we’ve picked two.

Our first Jorja pick is the Preditah mix “On My Mind,”  instant head bop song with the clean, easily danceable drum beats. It’s a departure from her more soulful work. . It’s punchy and sexy. But it puts us in a fun mood and the video takes us back, back to easy fun hanging out with friends one afternoon. The chorus is especially appealing. It’s a “whatever, dude, I’m done” sort of dis:

Don’t want to feel you
Don’t want you on my mind

{youtube}PA5uuBCtZ5k{/youtube}

The second Jorja pick is “Beautiful Little Fools” because of her voice, hands down. The opening piano is sultry and sets the mood. We first listened to the to the song and then saw the video.

Both the song and video are rich with color, soul and feels.

{youtube}Ymm3A5lSGwo{/youtube}

She’ll be rolling through SoCal for Coachella and will stop in L.A on Wednesday, April 18 at The Novo. We’ll be there!

Keep up with the lovely Jorja:  Twitter  | Instagram  | Facebook

Keep making music that moves us.

The Cape and The Klan @ The Group Rep

The Group Rep Presents: “The Cape and The Klan” playing through March 18.

Written by Tin Penavic & Ted Ryan

Directed by Stan Mazin

It is New York in 1951 and radio is still king.

Television is hot on its heels though and, as we discover, the weekly radio shows that had been the mainstay of family entertainment in America for years are beginning to lose ground to the thrill of a TV in every living room.  There does seem to be one show that still holds it’s audience though, “The Adventures of Superman.”  It’s tiny and multifunctional cast are determined to keep their jobs and the station alive.

Capers2 1

The producer of the show, Bob, gets a call from an old friend from the war, Harry, who has a story he needs the world to know, and Bob is his only hope.  Harry, an undercover reporter, has infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan and has records of their terrible atrocities but needs help reaching enough people to believe that the Klan is so much more than the “gentleman’s club” they have been pretending to be.

Once Harry explains what he has been up to these past months, Bob, although more than a little afraid – and not just of losing his job – persuades the actors and the station manager to take a huge chance and use the strength of the Superman format to force the country to face the ugly truth about the Ku Klux Klan.

Together they write a story arc that exposes the Klan’s vile agenda that entertains and inspires the nation.  The ratings go through the roof, the Ku Klux Klan can no longer deny their true purpose and the station is saved!

Capers31

It’s all very heady stuff…and it could easily be dismissed as a bit of fun entertainment and totally miss the importance of the story.  But the capable folks at the Group Rep prove that you can move people, make them laugh and, most importantly, make them think.

People are underestimated all the time, aren’t they?

There’s always some group or another stupid enough to assume that we just don’t have the time or the motivation for truth or justice, or to fight for what is right.  It’s these idiots that try to prey on our distractions, but history tells us that while they may manage to run their cons for a while, it never lasts.  They always lose in the end and goodness always prevails.  That’s why Superman is such a timeless and important hero, especially in the US.

This play is based on true events.  The writers Tin Penavic and Ted Ryan took the work of Stetson Kennedy, the actual undercover journalist, and turned it into this brilliant depiction of these astonishing and rather timely events.  The cast are really wonderful and take us right back to the days of radio…all standing around a microphone, scripts in hand, waiting for their moments…brilliant!!

It’s simply but hugely effectively staged and directed.  This play has spirit, gusto, glamour, humor and heart…I loved it!

I highly recommend “The Cape and The Klan” – but don’t dawdle…it’s a short run!!

Running from February 17 through March 11, Saturdays at 2pm and Sundays at 7pm.

Additional performances just added! Friday, March 16th at 8pm, Saturday, March 17th at 8pm and Sunday, March 18th at 7pm

Kitchen; white or wrong

For the last few years an all-white kitchen or close to it seems to be everywhere.

White cabinets paired with stainless steel appliances and subway tile could be found in almost every design magazine or showcase house.  While a white kitchen is still the most popular today, there are trends using colored cabinets close in tow.

Gray seems to slowly becoming the new white. A lighter shade of gray can create a simple and clean lined look.  Still using a gray stone counter and white subway tile allows for the same classic feel.  But take that a step further.  Add visual interest using two colors in the kitchen cabinetry.  Using two shades of the same color not only updates the look but takes the kitchen to a whole new level.  I find this to be a safe way for some to design with an ‘out of the box’ plan.

For those of you who may be a bit daring, try a different color on the island if you have one.   Painted or stained with a darker color from the rest will create huge visual interest and delineate the two areas.  It allows the island area to make the statement and set the tone for the kitchen.

No matter how you choose to design your kitchen, make it your own.  Have a much fun as you like.  As for white kitchens, it will always be my favorite no matter what the trend states.

DON’T HUG ME, WE’RE FAMILY @ T.U. Studios

Don’t Hug Me Productions presents a world premiere musical comedy

“DON’T HUG ME, WE’RE FAMILY”

Book & Lyrics by Phil Olson

Music by Paul Olson

Directed by Doug Engalla

We are treated to a new DON’T HUG ME and returning to Bunyan Bay in northern Minnesota, “doncha know,” with the town hotspot, The Bunyan and the local radio statio KOLD, having been sold.

To make matters worse, Gunner’s radio show, “Crappie Talk,” has no listeners, and lost its most valuable sponsor, Kanute’s Bait Mart.   The new owner, a New Yorker mobster type named Sal (Michael Cortez), has given Gunner one week and threatened to drop his show if Gunner can’t get listeners and sponsors.

LtoR DavidPluebell MickyShiloah AllisonHawkstone TruettJeanButler photoByDougEngalla+PhilOlson

Let’s clear something up before we go further.  “Crappie Talk” is pronounced Crawpy like the fish, not crappy, like the….  Now, onward.  Clara (Truett Jean Butler) and Gunner (Andrew Carter) have separated.  Clara has her own popular radio show, “Book Beat.”  With the current friction between Clara and Gunner, her success doesn’t make their situation any easier.  Aarvid (Micky Shiloah), Bernice (Allison Hawkstone) and Kanute (David Pluebell), locals in Bunyan Bay, share Gunner’s distress with the changes taking place, and do what they can to correct, or at times, just confuse the situation.  Enter Donna (Christina Gardner) who is the hot ex-wife of Sal and who has just bought the local “Hotel and Lounge.”  It appears that Sal has followed Donna to Bunyan Bay, bought KOLD, and plans to keep an eye on Donna.  What could go wrong????

LtoR ChristinaGardner TruettJeanButler MickyShiloah MichaelCortez photoByDougEngalla+PhilOlson

Now I know this sounds quite involved, but if you have ever seen a DON’T HUG ME play, you know how funny they can be, and how lovable and caring the residents of Bunyan Bay are.  Phil Olson gives us another wonderful book and lyrics, with great music by brother Paul Olson.  Direction by Doug Engalla is superb, and the cast is fantastic, comedic timing right-on, the songs and lyrics are memorable and will have your feet tapping, and Michele Bernath’s choreography is great.  Chris Winfield’s sets, which are always fantastic, are especially wonderful with all the kitsch of a remote northern Minnesota town bar.

It’s here…”DON’T HUG ME, WE’RE FAMILY.”  Always funny, always great, always wonderful, and always thoroughly enjoyable.

Now is the time to have some fun and visit Bunyan Bay once more.  I love the DON’T HUG ME series, and each and every one brings a smile to my face.  LOVED IT!!! I’m looking forward to the next one.

Enjoy!!!!!!!!

Music and Art: 4 Things to Consider When Trying to Photograph a Concert

Music and Art: 4 Things to Consider When Trying to Photograph a Concert

Alleviating the stress that you have in your life should be a priority. If a person fails to find a hobby, then the stress that they have in their life will begin to cause a lot of problems. Becoming a photographer is a great way to blow off some steam and learn a new skill in the process. Without a good bit of practice, it will be nearly impossible for you to get good at this hobby. Art professionals like Moshe Kantor understand the value of great pictures and pay good money for the best pictures. If you work hard and capture one of a kind shots, then you should have no problem turning your hobby into a career. The following are some of the things that you will need to think about when trying to shoot a live concert event.

music-and-art.jpg

  1. Make Sure You Have Your Equipment Ready

The main thing that you will have to do when trying to have success with shooting a concert is getting your equipment ready. You will need to take the time to pack your camera bag with all of the lenses and lights that you need. If you are unsure about what you need, then a bit of research will need to be done. You should reach out to professionals in the industry to get some input on what type of equipment is needed for success in shooting a concert.

Before choosing the cameras and lenses for your hobby, you need to consult with other professionals in the business. An experienced photographer will have no problem providing you with a bit of guidance. Neglecting to get this advice may lead to you getting the wrong equipment to pursue your new hobby with.

  1. Getting Approval is Important

The next thing that you will have to do when trying to take pictures at a concert is to get approval from the venue. Usually, a venue will have a very strict policy regarding who can shoot the artists in question. By calling ahead, you will be able to find out all of the particulars regarding when you can shoot and what precautions need to be taken in order to avoid disturbing others at the show. Taking the time to do a good bit of research is the only way to ensure that you have a successful concert photo shoot.

  1. Picking the Right Moments

When trying to have success with this type of photography, you will need to be able to pick the right shots. Usually, there will be a number of other photographers at the concert and they will all be vying for the same shots. You will need to take the time to find out how you can produce the most candid and original shots possible. While it will take a bit of time and practice to get good at this hobby, it will be more than worth it.

In most instances, you will need to shoot a variety of pictures at a concert. The best shots will usually be a total accident and will be discovered during the editing process. Focusing too hard on making every shot a winner will end up taking all of the fun out of this process.

  1. Choose the Right Bands

Ideally, you will want to choose a band that you are a fan of to shoot. Your love of their music will help you get through these long shows with ease. If at all possible, shooting bands that are still on the rise is a good idea. The pictures of a band that has just gained more notoriety will help to garner you more money for your shots. With a bit of persistence, you should have no problem getting great pictures.

Finding a professional photographer that can act as a mentor is vital when trying to gain more experience.

Burlesque Shakespeare?

Shakespeare goes burlesque February 27 at The Federal NoHo.

We always say and we’ll continue to say: “NoHo is only as great as its people.”

Meet the uber original Toil and Trouble Burlesque who brings the Bard’s words and characters to life with burlesque.

Toil and Trouble Burlesque’s will take the stage at The Federal on Tuesday, February 27 for their first production of 2018: SOUND AND FURY! The show will feature acts performed by some of Shakespeare’s most iconic leading ladies, and will be hosted by none other than sexy William Shakespeare himself.

Toil and Trouble as founded in 2015 by creative producer Burgundy Kate and is L.A.’s premiere Shakespearean burlesque company.

Why Shakespeare?

“Well, while we all admire the classical renditions of the Bard’s great works, and while we adore the modern movie adaptations (DiCaprio or otherwise) we still can’t help but feel that we can bring a bit more (or less) to the greatest plays, and sonnets, and characters ever written. The men and women of Toil and Trouble are made up of some of the greatest burlesque performers in Los Angeles… and, lets face it — when the greatest burlesque performers in Los Angeles team up with the greatest playwright in the history of the English language… only great things can come of it, right?

“Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” Come let us thrust some greatness upon you.”

Luminario Ballet Brings “Breathless” to the El Portal Theatre!

“BREATHLESS” features two great Luminario Ballet revivals, two new work-in-progress, and -just in time for Passover and Easter- “The Last Supper.”

Luminario Ballet brings “Breathless” to NoHo’s El Portal Theatre March 9-11. “Breathless” features four ballets: from 2009, Jamal Story’s “If the Walls Could Scream,” an epic battle of the sexes; “TRAILS” 2014, a ballet about climate change with images from NASA, with live music from Philip Glass; “Listen To My Heart,” a ballet about LOVE by Luminario Ballet’s artistic director Judith FLEX Helle to electronica jazz by Floating Points; and, back by popular demand, Easter 2017’s dance theatre piece, “The Last Supper,” about when those three fun Jewish club kids -Jesus, Judas and Mary- went to Coachella Music Festival 2017! Music by Radiohead, Nirvana, Weezer, and more! A sing-a-long rock/ballet experience!

Special guest superstar aerialist /aerial choreographer (PINK, CHER, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Teatro ZinZanni) Dreya Weber will perform a mysterious work-in-progress piece about the Dark Ages from her German ancestry.

Spoken Word poet Jonathan Rios will open “TRAILS” and “The Last Supper” with his rhythmic rhyming hip hop cadence, allowing us a fresh look into our world through his eyes.

The Luminario Ballet cast includes special guest Jamal Story, Amber Porter, Adrian Hoffman, Damien Diaz, Evan Swenson, Isaac Huerta, Kelly Vittetoe, Sadie Black, Shannon Beach, Sheila Joy Burford, Stephanie Kim and Windu Sayles !

We chatted with artistic director Judith FLEX Helle about “Breathless”

https://www.instagram.com/p/BeBEfk_jWre/?taken-by=luminarioballet

Why did you choose Jamal’s story “If the Walls Could Scream” and “Trails”?

Luminario Ballet’s “Breathless” looks at quite a few of today’s topics- and Jamal Story’s “If the Walls Could Scream,” a battle of the sexes; and “TRAILS,” a ballet about climate change, are two of these important topics.

First, “If the Walls Could Scream”:
~ When Jamal Story choreographed this ballet for Luminario Ballet in 2019/10, we were all well aware of domestic violence and the complex physicality of male/female relationships- but it took until now to really view this ballet through a very clear lens of what it takes for a woman to be in a relationship. Each of the 3 couples is battling- who knows the various reasons. The 2nd section is most poignant, as Nina Simone sings: “He Needs Me” while a girl begs her guy to stay with her and its pretty clear he’s on the way out. But, things do actually resolve in the third section to Mumadji’s fado “Mon Amor” and we feel ok about that.

“TRAILS” ~ climate change and the pressure on California’s environment couldn’t be a more important topic for us all to discuss and ponder solutions. This ballet came out in 2014 in a environmentally friendly administration- but now we are in a polluter industry friendly administration, so it is even more important for us Californians to simply continue moving this discussion forward with our own solutions. Its not just the right thing to do for a cleaner world, but will help us economically too as we lead in this area. Through the beauty of the dancers, Paul Ackerman’s NASA and California landscape media, we can both admire its beauty and be shocked by the devastation of this year’s climate change salvos- the twin devils of fire and flood. Let’s all talk about it and definitely get comfortable with our great California ingenuity here to move to a cleaner, greener world.

Can you give us more of the story behind “Listen to My Heart?”

As a choreographer, I often have very complex thoughts running through my mind and the biggest question is- how to get this feeling across without words? “Listen To My Heart” is a ballet about LOVE. It was inspired by being invited to five weddings in 2016! FIVE! I attended three. Each one was wonderful, magnificent, attended by literally hundreds of loving family and friends. But, as one scratched the surface of these gatherings, the complexities of familial love appears. In addition to the “breathless” feeling of meeting “THAT PERSON!” and hardly being presentable in public, there are a myriad of feelings that one senses at these weddings- the gay cousin who can’t bring his/her partner- the new couple who wonder if they will get married next- the couples who are not solid anymore but are trying to be- the singletons who can’t decide what they are doing in today’s smartphone hookup app world… is it better to just be single, and not even deal with all this? Hmm. Let’s all think about this for a second and try to decide what’s best for us. Let’s “Listen To Our Hearts!”

Luminario Ballet The Last Supper via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

What’s the show synopsis of “The Last Supper?”

“The Last Supper” is about when those fun Jewish club kids, Jesus, Judas, and Mary went to Coachella over Easter/Passover weekend last year, 2017!

Jesus is Black, Judas a gay druggie, and Mary a hustlin’ Burlesque Queen who sells her BFFs on the side! What could possibly go wrong at Coachella with these three!

This piece deals with some of today’s social problems: friendship/innocence/loyalty/drugs/betrayal/sex/choice/forgiveness/sharing/caring/community- and grabs onto a couple of topics- Black Lives Matter/Incarceration, pot smoking- that are always interesting to examine together with one’s friends and family. (haha) “What would Jesus do?” He’s a sport, he forgives!

“The Last Supper” romps through some of our favorite 90s grunge rock songs which tell the “Greatest Story Ever Told” surprisingly accurately! Who would have thought that the Violent Femmes, Nirvana, Weezer or Radiohead would illustrate the New Testament so succinctly!

Luminario Ballet Dreya Weber

Is there something you’d like your audiences to know about “Breathless?”

We have several guest stars in “Breathless”: Jonathan Rios, our spoken word poet will lead into both “TRAILS,”with his thoughts on what we can do about climate change based on what he saw implemented in Europe last summer and, “The Last Supper,” where he holds up the Old Testament’s story of wandering in the desert for 40 years as a homeless child being raised with his sister on the streets of LA growing up. The soft, rhythmic hip hop cadence of this Master storyteller belies his sharp points, and we are lucky to have him speak for our dancers, who do not!

Dreya Weber, aerial star and aerial choreographer (PINK, CHER, Madonna, Michael Jackson) is presenting a new work-in-progress- “Witch Piece”, about her ancestors in Europe’s Dark Ages.

One wonders about the persecution of witches, especially in light of today’s #metoo movement shining a bright light on how powerful men have persecuted women for trying to step up- as Grammy president admonished the women artists at the Grammys-since the beginning.

Jamal Story, Broadway star (The Color Purple, Motown the Musical), rock tour star (Madonna, CHER), dance star (Dance Theatre of Harlem, Complexions dance NYC), and, generally high level human (book author, composer, pianist, choreographer, gymnast, aerial acrobat, the list goes on).

Sheila Joy Burford, dancer and aerialist- who performed with Cris Angel Believe, Michael Jackson, and is on the road these days with CHER.

AND last but certainly not least, our own North Hollywood dancer and aerial star, Shannon Beach joins Luminario Ballet for the first time in “Listen To My Heart” as the bride! Shannon lives just off Magnolia and has toured the world as a dancer and aerialist with CHER, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, and many more. She’s also a mother of two young girls, and currently enjoying her time raising the next generation of stars!

See you at the ballet!

Intermediate Actor – Checklist

Business of being an actor. – Intermediate

Intermediate Actor – Checklist

The beginning of the year is a great time to evaluate your progress and your goals for the year. Actors are a business, and we need to look at ourselves from that perspective. Last month I talked about what a beginning actor can be doing. This month, let’s discuss the intermediate actor.

As I cited last month, since there is no curriculum, or set pattern to make a career in this business, many actors feel helpless, frustrated, lost, and waste time and money trying to make the right decisions. Here is a guide. Monitor yourself, see where you are and how you’re doing. It’s only a guide. Review yourself; check your strategies and goals; and use it as a barometer. Add and subtract according to your own situation, needs, and desires. At the end add your ideas or what you may have or are doing.

As an intermediate actor, you should be actively going out and getting as much work, experience, and contacts as you can. There is a lot of work for you to seek and get. At this level you want to build credits, make connections, and foster your network. If you consider yourself an intermediate actor, see how you compare to this list.

Intermediate Actor: (2-3 years)

  • Takes a class at least once a week.
  • Has two monologues prepared.
  • Has 6 -12 scenes that have been completed.
  • Is involved in a theater situation where there are audition possibilities, play readings, and productions.
  • Has a good headshot.
  • Is building a resume of experience, including plays, student films, videos, non-union projects, and web series.
  • Works regularly with friends on camera for on-camera experience.
  • Reads the trades, signs up and has a working knowledge of casting services. Makes a practice of submitting for anything and everything they are right for.
  • Auditions as much as possible for parts they are right for, understudies plays or performs on stage as much as possible.
  • Has or is seeking an agent or manager.
  • Has taken a commercial workshop and has (or is seeking) a commercial agent, and auditions for commercials.
  • Reads at least 2 plays per month.
  • Sees at least 1 play per month.
  • Sees 3-4 movies per month.
  • Works on ways to get tape on themselves, either by a project already worked on, or self-produced.
  • Networks in showcases, theater, scene nights, play readings, and projects that can “put them out there” to be seen and gain experience.
  • Web series can be good opportunities to get experience, tape, and make contacts. Should have at least one with a substantial role.
  • Works on getting featured and co-starring roles in television and film.
  • Is working on or has gotten in the unions, SAG, and maybe EQUITY.
  • Has a good resume for gaining work and representation.

I think at this level the intermediate actor should have a good reel of their work. If you don’t have a good reel from a job that you did, then it’s worth the investment to have one professionally made.  You also should be seeking or have representation.  When seeking representation, make sure your photo is a good representation of you and that you are happy and proud of the reel that you have.  It’s important to find an agent that can meet you where you are, meaning getting you out for roles that you are ready for.

At this level, if you’re auditioning on a regular basis, or going out to meet casting directors and agents, you might be having some frustration when jobs or contacts don’t work out for you. Here’s a great quote that I think is appropriate for this time.

“Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm” – Winston Churchill

Next month I’ll talk about the advanced actor.

Maintaining Great Results After Your Cosmetic Surgery

Maintaining Great Results After Your Cosmetic Surgery

Undergoing a cosmetic surgery is, literally speaking, an investment into improving your appearance and increasing confidence as the results take shape. It’s also an investment in terms of energy and time, and you need to ensure that the efforts you’ve put in pay off. While cosmetic surgical procedures have high patient satisfaction rates (with results you’ll be thrilled about for years to come), it’s critical you understand that the results require some form of upkeep to stay in shape – and nothing can really stop the effects of genetics, your lifestyle and aging.

The best news is that there are things you can do to successfully maintain your results for years. Here are a few things worth considering, maximizing on your surgery outcomes.

Good Skin Practice

After you’ve had your procedure, proper skin care makes a huge difference in scarring. As time passes by, adopting a great skin care regimen will help make your results look just as good, if not better than ever.

cosmetic-surgery.jpg

Scarring is a necessary part of most surgeries and surgeons will take care to place incisions where they are hidden, ensuring that they heal optimally and vanish nicely over time is partly in your hands – these includes procedures like breast lifts (you can find more information at www.lvcosmeticsurgery.com/breast-lift-surgery). First, you have to follow postoperative activity restrictions as described by the surgeon. Second, ensure you protect the incisions from the sun, while keeping the area clean and use scar care ointments and creams recommended.

If you have just had a facial procedure, the exact medical-grade skin care products will help maintain and enhance the cosmetic surgery results. Proper skin care is so critical that surgeons have an aesthetician as part of the team that guides you to using the right products for your skin. Even if you already follow a skin care regime, ask about the products and find out if there’s anything you need to adjust.

Adopt Healthy Habits

What you put on the outside and into your body affects your surgical results and has a big impact in your overall health. For example, many cosmetic surgeons recommend that their patients quit smoking at least a couple of weeks before and after a procedure. Nicotine has a huge impact on how your body heals, and may result in prolonged recovery times and possible complications that lead to bleeding, pain and even more visible scarring.

Another pitfall you will need to avoid is excessive alcohol consumption. You need to be honest with your surgeon and tell him or her how much you drink, if you smoke, and medications you are taking, including vitamins or supplements that you use externally and internally. Your doctor will tell you the best steps to prepare for your procedure as what you should avoid for optimal results.

Regular Exercise and Healthy Diet

shoes.jpg

Body contour procedures transform your curves, offering you a more proportionate and pleasing look. The results are magical – seemingly – but they will only last as long as you keep to a healthy weight. For example, fat removing procedures like liposuction permanently get rid of targeted fat cells, but once you gain weight, you will see it in other areas.

If you’ve had a lift surgery procedure (Like a body lift or tummy tuck), you need to keep your weight to a stable range. Doing this will help avoid stretching your skin again and eventually nullifying the improvements you have worked so hard to achieve.  Eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly are the best ways of maintaining your body contouring results – in addition, doing so will help you feel great and improve your overall health.

Tell us a little bit of background on you and how it relates to “The Meatballs of Comedy”

I am originally from Short Hills New Jersey, part of a big Italian family with lots of aunts and uncles and cousins. Ours was a musical family and I started my life on stage as the saxophone player in our family band, which was pretty much an Italian version of The Partridge Family, with the sequins and the jumpsuits and the whole bit. My dad managed and my mother made the costumes. Joe Pesci (who my father grew up with in Newark, New Jersey and with whom he performed in bands) wrote some of our songs. We came to California to make records (with a summer in Las Vegas to be trained by Tommy Devito, one of the original Jersey Boys, who my father knew growing up) and when that ran it’s course I found myself on the stand-up comedy stage. My younger brother, who was the bass player of the group, and I were the clowns of the group so we formed the comedy team Jimmy & Joey, America’s Funniest Italian Comedians and worked our way through the Los Angeles comedy scene until we became regulars at The World Famous Comedy Store. When I decided to do my own show, I created The Meatballs Of Comedy, featuring all Italian-American comedians serving up Comedy Italian Style, with Jimmy & Joey as the headliners.

How did the cast meet?

Eva Miller moved to Los Angeles area from Northern California twelve years ago and began working her way into the LA comedy scene. She began attending The Meatballs shows and liked what she saw. She started to help promote the shows and then started to host the shows and the rest is history. She was a chef in the United States Navy and it turns out a very natural comedianne and when I decided to have her perform as the chef it was magic time. Celebrity Chef Eva was born and is now about to take the comedy AND food world by storm.

I had known Amy Milano for many years as we were both working our way through the Los Angeles comedy scene. When I created The Meatballs Of Comedy I needed to cast a cocktail waitress who could deliver the goods on stage and Amy was the natural choice. Amy’s specialty is dance and she has traveled the world on the strength of her dancing skills (she introduced tap to Ghana, West Africa). When Amy is not performing with The Meatballs, she performs her one woman show in the theaters of Los Angeles.

Vince Brocato attended one of my very first shows many years ago and we never lost touch. As I was developing the show I booked Vince to come sing some Frank and Dino to warm up the crowd. Soon he became the opening act and when the gentleman who performed as the Maitre D’ passed away unexpectedly, Vince was the natural choice to replace him, in no small part because he had his own tux.

Danny Salay is the newest edition to the cast. He plays “Jimmy” in the Jimmy & Joey act and “Headwaiter Jimmy” in The Meatballs show. When my brother decided to go back to civilian life after many years on the comedy stage began the task of recasting the part, which turned out to be an epic journey. After many (many) “Jimmys”, Danny showed up, having returned from seven years acting in movies in China of all places (he speaks fluent Mandarin). We jelled right away and his talent, work ethic and Buffalo, New York upbringing made him the perfect partner in comedy.

Does “The Meatballs of Comedy” have other goals besides great comedy?

The Meatballs Of Comedy plan on bringing laughter from the Italian-American perspective to the world through live performance, television and movies.

Where have you played previously? The Meatballs Of Comedy have performed all over the Los Angeles area and had a short residency in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Why should someone go to “The Meatballs of Comedy” if they are or are not Italian?

Because Everybody Loves Italians and everybody is Italian at The Meatballs Of Comedy show.

The Meatballs Of Comedy show is a one of a kind theatrical experience combining music, dance and good old fashioned stand-up comedy. If you’ve ever wondered what it was really like to be at an Italian Sunday dinner when all the funny cousins come over, you gotta get to a Meatballs show.

“Occupant” @ The Garry Marshall Theatre

The Garry Marshall Theatre presents Edward Albee’s “Occupant” running through March 4

Written by Edward Albee

Directed by Heather Chesley

Edward Albee is an iconic American writer (“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”).

He is absolutely one of my favorite playwrights and I am thrilled whenever one of his plays is being produced in L.A.

“Occupant” is one of his lesser-known plays, has only been produced a handful of times, and is one of the last plays written by this Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning playwright. This is its west coast premiere in fact, and if you want to produce an icon’s work then do it at an icon’s theatre.

The play is ostensively an interview.  As the play opens the interviewer, an unnamed man, is waiting nervously for his subject to arrive.  When she does, the audience is introduced to the much celebrated 20th-century sculptor Louise Nevelson in all her flamboyant, difficult and gifted glory…oh and she is dead…a ghost, or something like it.  The interviewer is aware of this small detail and the manner by which this extraordinary conversation is taking place is never explained.  But that is hardly the point of the play.

Edward Albee was a great friend of Louise Nevelson and the play was written after her death, so it is a fair assumption to say that the interviewer is in some way Albee himself.  Ms Nevelson was a fascinating woman and famously vague and contradictory about her life story, her beginnings and even her name at some points of her life.

This play takes us on a roundabout journey through her life.  From her childhood in Russia to her immigration to America and her experiences as a Russian jew living in Maine in the early part of the 20th century.  But mostly the play explores how this Russian Jewish woman reinvented herself as one of the world’s greatest sculptors.  With little training and really no support from her family, she quite literally ran away to the city to become an artist.  All this late in life too, after an unhappy marriage and what was to her the burden of motherhood, or as she puts it, “I was a terrible mother.”

So…an unusual subject matter for a play…but then Edward Albee was never a traditional or predictable writer and Louise Nevelson, with her monumental, monochromatic wall pieces and sculptures was hardly a conformist either, in her life or her art.  So a perfect match!

Perhaps the playwright saw in his subject an opportunity to explore his own “why” as much as anything else.  Either way what is created is a remarkable piece of work.  Full of revelations and confessions as well as the obvious maneuverings of a reluctant subject keen to deflect truths with her dreams of what was real.  How often we imagine how we might ask questions of those we love after they have moved on from this world? I know I have, many, many times.  This play is Albee creating a world in which he can conjure up his dearest friend to ask her more about herself than she would ever share while she was alive.  Perhaps he regretted never having more candor from her, perhaps he thought he would have much more time for talking…but then again, don’t we all?

It’s a lovely piece and the simple and stunningly effective and evocative staging and direction support these fine actors in their uncovering of characters so full of the weight of their words while still maintaining the passion, the humor and the irony of regret.

Martha Hackett as Louise Nevelson and James Liebman as the interviewer are both sublime.  Subtle, nuanced and forgiving of each other as they spar and skewer their way through what seems like it should be just a conversation, but is oh so much more disarming than that.

I highly recommend “Occupant” at The Garry Marshall Theatre…another beautiful, thoughtful production…bravo!

10 Reasons Why Mental Stimulation Is Important for Dogs

It’s widely known that dogs require regular physical exercise to maintain a healthy weight and for overall well-being.

But some owners forget that pets also require mental stimulation just as much as physical activities.

Over the last few decades, many studies have demonstrated why mental stimulation is critical no matter the dog’s age. Today, experts universally agree that there’s a strong correlation between the lack of stimulation of different sensory receptors and several mental illnesses in dogs, such as depression or severe anxiety.

Here are the top 10 reasons why you should take your dog’s mental stimulation more seriously:

  1. Alleviate Boredom

Dog owners who need to be away from home all day find that their dogs can go through separation anxiety, which expresses itself through a variety of behavioral problems.

Your dog misses you, and that’s part of the problem. But the real reason why your dog might start tearing up your house or barking excessively is boredom. A bored dog needs to find a way to amuse himself. Making sure that your dog has interactive toys that mentally stimulate him, including food puzzles and other games to keep him occupied during the day is the easiest way to alleviate that boredom.

  1. It’s Necessary for Happiness

Going closely together with boredom, mental stimulation can stave off depression in dogs and keep them happier, according to research. Dogs, especially working breeds and generally very active breeds, need far more mental stimulation than dogs that are likely to be couch potatoes.

  1. Help Lessen Hyperactivity

There’s only so many activities dogs can partake in by themselves. If your dog is at home most of the day with nothing to occupy the mind, it’s likely he’ll be bursting with energy. Hyperactivity can sometimes be just a nuisance, until it turns into a more severe problem.

Your pet’s energy levels will depend on the breed, age and health condition. But regardless, your dog needs to work off that energy, and getting him outdoors is usually the way to go. Going for walks, or trips to the dog park combined with games and stimulating toys are some of the scientifically proven ways to calm down a dog and keep your Fido mellow.

  1. dog-stimulation-2.jpgIt’s a Brain Workout

Just like your dog’s muscles will get weak and atrophy without enough exercise, your dog’s brain needs daily stimulation to avoid premature aging.

It’s proven that dogs who aren’t well mentally stimulated throughout their lives are more prone to cognitive dysfunctions as they get older. Just a simple interactive toy with treats in it that allows your pooch to figure out the puzzle will do a lot of good.

  1. Lower Aggression

Proper mental stimulation will lower the dog’s tendency to be aggressive. Bored dogs are cranky dogs, and cranky dogs are more likely to be aggressive towards people and other animals, according to research. Making sure that your dog is getting enough mental stimulation is especially important if you have other pets or kids at home.

  1. Lower Stress

Stress can cause a lot of health problems in humans, and the same applies to dogs. Statistically, dogs who are aren’t getting enough mental stimulation are likely to suffer from stress, which leads to higher rates of anxiety and depression. Consequently, this also shows in the form of higher rates of behavioral issues and physical problems.

  1. Get Rid Of Destructive Behavior

Dogs who aren’t getting the mental stimulation they need can chew furniture, destroy things, bark incessantly, and display other types of destructive behavior. PETA reports that one of the major reasons why dogs are getting rehomed is destructive behavior. If only these pets would’ve received proper amount of mental stimulation, it’s likely half of those cases could’ve been solved right away.

  1. Keep Older Dogs Mentally Healthy

Senior dogs in particular will need a lot of mental stimulation as their brain activity deteriorates. While the major deciding factor for a senior dog’s mental health will be how much stimulation he’s gotten throughout life, it’s just as important not to negate it in his last years. It may be more difficult with older dogs, but puzzle toys with treats and socialization are the two best ways to stimulate them.

  1. Teach Young Puppies Good Habits

Playtime, socialization, mentally stimulating games and toys are crucial for young dogs in their early years of development. New study shows that it makes puppies more confident, and teaches them proper behavior and give them an outlet for their extra energy. They will learn healthy habits and how not to engage in destructive behaviors, and sets them up for a life with less cognitive problems.

  1. Bond With Your Dog

Playing fetch or puzzle games with your dog, taking your dog to a dog park, and working on tasks like agility training and command training will improve the bond between you and your Fido. While there’s no evidence, many pet owners are here to conclude that the stronger that bond, the less likely it is that your dog will act out or misbehave. And really any activity can be turned into a fun game that will keep your occupied and mentally stimulated.

The Best Mental Stimulation Activities for Dogs

Some of the best ways to make sure that your dog is getting the important mental stimulation it needs each day are anything from interactive toys and puzzle feeders, to agility training, obedience training, taking the dog to a dog park, or playing games where your pooch has to figure out an action in order to get a treat reward.

Doggie Day Care or Dog Walker

If you don’t have time to check in on your dog during the day but you’re worried that your dog isn’t getting enough mental stimulation, consider enrolling your dog in a doggie daycare. In these facilities, your Fido will get the mental stimulation it needs from specially organized games and activities done by professionals, playing with other dogs, and getting the chance to get out of the house for a while.

Doggie daycare isn’t cheap. If you can’t make it home to take your dog for a walk and daycare is not an option or is too expensive, you can hire a dog walker (dog sitter) to come in and take the dog out for a nice walk and some playtime during the day.

How to Keep Your Dog Mentally Stimulated During the Day

If you must work all day, like most people, there are plenty of toys and games you can leave set up for your dog to provide mental stimulation. Some toys are much better than the others, however.

Treat stuffed toys, where the dog must work out a puzzle to get a treat, are very popular and good for dogs. You can also use a special feeder that dispenses food after the dog figures out a puzzle so that to get a meal during the day the dog needs to work out the puzzle.

Hiding toys and treats around the house is another way to keep dogs mentally stimulated throughout the day. Make sure that you are switching up the toys that you leave out for your dog to provide a little extra stimulation. Look for interactive toys that your dog likes but aren’t easy to figure out.

There are also DVDs and live streaming videos on YouTube that you can leave on for your dog to watch. These videos use stimulating images and music or sound to keep a dog’s mind occupied throughout the day. Leaving these DVDs or videos on during the day can provide excellent entertainment and stimulation for dogs, but whether your dog enjoys it will depend on your individual pet.

The Speed of Darkness

River Street Theatre Company presents: “The Speed of Darkness”

Written by Steve Tesich

Directed by William Alderson

“The Speed of Darkness” is a play about lies.

The lies we tell ourselves, the lies we tell those we love and the lies we project that sculpt the person we wish that we could be.

Set in South Dakota, the story revolves around Joe, a Vietnam vet and successful local businessman and his wife and teenage daughter.  Their life seems simple enough.  Joe runs the business, his wife Anne and daughter Mary have a good life. But as Mary prepares to go off to college, they all sense a shift in their world.  Lou arrives one day out of the blue, a war buddy of Joe,  a sweet and broken traveller and one-time co-worker of Joe, in the days long before his success and the just days after the war.

The play is slightly twisted in time. Beginning at the very end, with the testimony of Eddie, Mary’s former boyfriend, giving only the barest of information about what is to come.  Just the hint of death, without any clue as to whose it may be.

So with that impending ‘doom’ hanging over the story as it unfolds, we are never quite sure where to look, which is a fascinating way to tell a story really.  It makes one study every line more, watch carefully for any hint of a clue and, as everyone unravels, as they must do, we sit a little stiller as we hold our breath.

Without giving too much away I can tell you that this play takes a few turns that you might not expect.  People reveal themselves, truths are finally and painfully told and the results are not at all traditional or predictable.

“The Speed of Darkness” is a complicated story with a small but vivid cast of characters, each with their own particular agenda.  The roles are interesting, and far from cookie cutter.  The women are strong, they have purpose and resolve and come off far better than the men, which is good and real and timely.

The cast is superb, each seem deeply connected to their roles and you can tell how much work has gone into the production, but not because of the obvious signs of labor, because of the lightness of effect.  They ‘are’ their parts.  And the phenomenal result of that is genuinely brilliant performances, a fascinating and heartbreaking study of a family clouded in deceit and ultimately set free from it.

“The Speed of Darkness” is an excellent play, beautifully acted and poignantly directed…it’s well worth seeing and I highly recommend it.  But it’s not a long run so don’t dawdle!!
