“Company Shorts” at the Whitefire Theatre runs Tuesdays at 8PM, April 17 – May 22.
The Whitefire is becoming the busiest theatre in LA!
Their latest production, “Company Shorts,” is in its fourth year now and this year’s group of very short plays is a non-stop explosion of brilliance. It’s hard to catch your breath in fact, the laughs are that constant.
The subjects are varied and fantastical, shocking and sweet, knowing and a bit surreal, all the while with a firm nod to the kind of comic genius you would find on SNL…on a good night. Some of the sketches felt a bit Monty Pythonesque, which I loved of course. But whether you like watching mice discuss avoiding death, nail technicians hating on customers or a man’s porn secret catapulting him to unwanted fame, you will certainly laugh, which is vital and meaningful in today’s terrifying world.
How “Team Whitefire” has the time and the energy to support all this feverish development of original works I will never know, although I am told there is a cot up in the office for napping emergencies I presume. But seriously, the extremely high quality of the work that this little theatre in Sherman Oaks produces is pretty astounding. They give fledgling writers and actors an amazing opportunity to tell stories in their own unique voices and they always seem to pack the house.
I could see some of these shorts being developed into longer plays, but for the most part, it’s a celebration of the ‘short’ genre and all its wild possibilities to explore dark humor and bitingly good cynicism.
I highly recommend “Company Shorts” at The Whitefire, it’s only on once a week, Tuesdays at 8 pm and only until May 22nd…so don’t dawdle!!
