Boy Boi is Jazzy

Everyone’s talking about Marie Kondo and her successful “Does it bring you joy?” approach. Well, we know for sure, without a doubt, that dance brings us joy, and we want to share the joy dancers give. Afterall, sharing is caring.

We picked Jose “Boy Boi” Tena as our first feature because he’s simply jazzy, figuratively and literally.

But there’s nothing simple about Boy Boi’s choreography. His technique shines through his sharp yet fluid jazz funk choreography. He’s jazz reinvented. #JazzisBack. Looking closely at his choreography you can see the difficulty level but he makes it look easy, breezy, strong and natural. Dancing is what he is meant to do.  His love for the art explodes in every video we watch and his energy brings us joy. Choosing just one video is impossible.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BuLWW2PHsEA/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=q7sgha2w9ibc

You can see him in “Step up 3D” and Beyoncé’s “Let’s Move” campaign. He’s danced on Arianna Grande’s “Dangerous Woman” tour and he’s a company member with Dana Foglia Dance, where we first saw him command the stage, making us ask, “Who’s that?!”

Boy Boi studied dance at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts and was a YouthArts dance finalist. But he’s not only an accomplished dancer, he’s also a favorite choreographer with our program’s dancers. You feel his energy through his videos but it’s a treat to feel that happy vibe live, in one of his classes.

“I love Boy Boi because he’s doing a hard jazz choreography and he has a unique style. It’s really fun to be in his classes because he’s funny and really challenging.” – Or, Tel Aviv

“I liked Boy Boi’s class because he used a modern song, and his choroegraphy was sassy, which is my kind of style. He’s the kind of person who kind of transmits his confidence to you.” – Bela, Boston

“He’s sexy….but he’s a great dancer. I like the way he teaches class, he brings his sassy vibe which spreads such an energy that makes you wanna push yourself! His classes are unforgettable….I literally remember them to this very day and I’m excited to be back in his classes.” – Keara, London

Boy Boi teaches at several studios in NoHo Arts District, home to six dance studios. Follow him on Instagram to get the latest updates and slices of dance joy.

When you get the chance, see him also perform with Dana Foglia Dance. Take a peek at the company’s latest work, “Luxury Problems.”

Keep dancing, it’s good for you.

Yes, NoHo Has FREE Improv Classes

So the NoHo Arts District helps create a community of actors and friends with FREE IMPROV classes. Yep. NoHo Arts District Offers a Free Improv Workshop. They’ve added a low-budget Scene Study class, too!

This is the NoHo Arts District and, FYI, we are a theatre district.

We have the highest concentration of theatres outside of New York City – 20 in a mile. That means we have actors honing their skills at one of our many acting classes and workshops. So when we come across a fun Improv class that’s free, we must share with our readers. So save your evenings for fast-paced Improv in the NoHo Arts District.

Scene Study Acting Class via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

They’ve just added a low-budget scene study class. They said, “We give performers the training they need to succeed on their budget.” We all can appreciate that. Check out their page for more information on how to get involved in this new class.

What people are saying about NoHo’s Free Improv Workshop.

“I attend the Free Weekly Improv Workshop run by Defiance Theater in NoHo, and I love it. I’ve taken Improv classes at UCB, Groundlings, and several other free workshops, and this is right up there with the best. It’s fun, yes, but more importantly it’s challenging. I can not only try out new characters and games, but I learn from the other actors in the class, and the amazing teacher. If you’re looking for an easy, jokey, practice improv space, this may not fit your bill. But if you are looking to become better at Improv, and see what you can do, then come ready to Defy.” – Hayes D.

“I’ve been attending NOHO improv for over a year. It’s a wonderful learning environment for people of all skill levels.” – Tim P.

What do you do in the workshop?

We play a lot of tough challenging games not designed for beginners. If you wanna learn fast, you gotta fail fast.

What do you get out of this?

Casting strangers is sometimes very scary, so this workshop gives us a chance to work with so many young people and gives us a chance to get to know them. Once we have a mutual trust and liking we can bring them into our theatre company or comedy sketch/Improv team. Most of our sketch/Improv teams, and even theatre company is made up of the people we met through the workshop.

What’s the secret to Improv?

My Secret Opinion is: They say there are no rules, yes there are some rules. BUT…once those rules become instinct, there are no rules.

How do you feel about schools specifically for Improv?

GREAT! Do all of them if you’re able. I have seen people audition who went through those schools but still couldn’t manage to impress an audience and I’ve seen people who had no experience on stage and blow the audience away. For instance, I saw a guy last week, it was his first time doing Improv and the group couldn’t wait to see what he would do next. I’m pretty confident that I watched a future comedic star perform Improv for his first time.

Any advice for people who want to get into Improv?

Don’t try to get a laugh. You won’t get it. But if you create a great character then you can make the audience cry or laugh, whatever you want. It’s your character. Create a good one then you can control your audience. And have fun no matter what happens.

‘Shark Tank’ Star Says Paying Off Debt Should Be #1 Priority—Here’s Why

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of ABC’s Shark Tank or catch the occasional episode while flipping through channels, you know how riveting it can be.

This show involves entrepreneurs standing boldly in front of a panel of business tycoons—also known as The Sharks—pitching their business ideas, trying to secure funding.

But there’s good news for all you viewers at home: You don’t have to stand in the spotlight on the set of Shark Tank to get some highly useful financial advice. Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary has some guidance for consumers to kick off the new year.

“The No. 1 resolution you should make on New Year’s Eve, and this is No.1, is to pay down your debt,” O’Leary tells CNBC. “That is the most important thing you can do for your future.”

Here’s what O’Leary recommends in terms of tackling your debt:

  • Come up with a plan to speed up principal payments.
  • Tackle credit card debt first, as this kind of debt tends to have the highest interest rates.
  • Make eliminating debt a tangible resolution or goal with a timeline.

In other words, it’s counterproductive to focus on other short- and long-term financial goals without prioritizing debt repayment.

Why It’s So Important to Eliminate Debt A.S.A.P.

Sometimes managing your personal finance feels like trying to juggle multiple objects. You’re thinking about income, debt, savings, retirement and more. It can be difficult to decide what to prioritize to give yourself the best outcomes.

Many experts, like O’Leary, make a case for paying down debt as soon as possible. Why? Because the accompanying interest rates on debt tend to rack up more debt, digging you into a deeper hole over time. If you’re accruing interest on your principal balance and its interest, your debt will only build over time unless you have an assertive plan to stop this cycle.

There are even situations in which paying down debt is more important than saving. It’s still important to build an emergency fund, of course, because this can help keep you out of further debt. But Money makes a case for paying off high-interest debt, like 15-percent APR credit card debt, over padding your savings account because the return rate will be higher.

Strategies for Reducing or Eliminating Your Debt

Exactly how you go about working on your debt will depend on factors like its type, the amount you carry, etc. Every debt elimination strategy comes with pros and cons, which you can only learn through researching your options.

Consumers with significant debt near or exceeding $10,000 may be considering debt settlement. Looking up Freedom Debt Relief reviews will reveal the strengths and challenges associated with enrolling in a leading program of this type. On one hand, you’ll gain access to experienced consultants, an online dashboard to keep you informed of your progress and trained negotiators who will contact your creditors in an attempt to settle for less than the original balance. On the other hand, you’ll only reap the benefits if you stick to the program for its full duration, and you’ll pay a percentage of your enrolled debt to access these services.

You can do the same type of “cost-benefit analysis” for any debt relief strategy. Considering debt consolidation? Make sure you know the risks and possible rewards of taking out a loan to cover your high-interest debts. Curious about balance transfers? Make sure you thoroughly understand the terms and conditions of any new credit cards you open for the purpose of transferring your existing balance—like whether there’s an introductory period for low or no APR. Trying to decide if bankruptcy is your only option? Talk to an experienced attorney and make sure you understand the severity of taking such an action before moving ahead.

If you’ve decided to take a do-it-yourself approach to debt repayment, get organized. Most people choose to either avalanche or snowball their payoff, which will dictate whether you start with your smallest balance first or the one with the highest interest rate.

Paying off your debt should be a top priority this year so you can end the harmful cycle of building more debt on what you already owe.

Would You Wear This Wacky Apple Watch Lookalike?

Imagine a scenario where you ask someone on the street for the time, and they do something completely unexpected like pressing a button on their watch and listening to it for a few seconds?

Even if they said the correct time, you’d probably be too confused and simply ask someone else. Well, this situation could become a reality now that H. Moser & Cie. has released what’s called the ‘Swiss Alp Watch Concept Black.’

The watch is unashamedly designed like an Apple Watch, right down to the rectangular shape and silver crown, but that’s not even the weirdest thing – the company has indeed made a timepiece with no watch face or dials, but instead you’ll have to press a button and listen for distinct chimes and gongs in order to tell the time. Does being different have to mean strange? H. Moser & Cie. clearly thinks so, and they’re charging an eye-watering $350,000 for the wearer to have the privilege of only being able to properly hear the time when you’re in a silent room or a quiet street.

Here’s what the brand has to say about the watch:

“As it was in the time before the use of electricity became widespread: people had to use minute repeaters to discover the time when it was too dark to see. H. Moser & Cie. is using this delightful nod to a highly prestigious watchmaking tradition to play with contrasts: this most minimalist of creations integrates a minute repeater and a tourbillon in a rectangular case that looks like a smartwatch.”

Yeah, yeah, it’s still a stupid idea no matter how many fancy words you use.

We’re not saying that watches shouldn’t be able to branch out a bit from the typical formula, but there’s branching out and then there’s being unusual just for the sake of it. Well, we suppose it worked, as H. Moser & Cie. got a headline out of this. It’s fair to say that These are what we think of when someone mentions Swiss-made watches: classy, cool, encrusted with gold plating and diamonds, and with actual numbers and hands to indicate the time. H. Moser & Cie. is seemingly capable of making normal watches, but it’s always the wackier designs which get them attention – usually for the wrong reasons.

The company’s other bizarre designs have included:

  • A watch made with real lichen and stone for the dial and woven grass for the strap
  • A watch with a dial made from hardened Swiss cheese resin
  • A watch which stole design elements from other Swiss luxury watch brands

So, basically what we’re saying is that if you want to spice up your winter styling, this isn’t the watch for you – nor for anyone, come to think of it.

Superbowl 53, Adam Levine and Nipples

Super Bowl LIII was relatively tame compared to other ones as far as football goes.

The Patriots put the hurt on the Rams then came the halftime show…Travis Scott and Big Boi.  Although I confess to being totally slammed into a brick wall with the mash-up of Pop Rock of Maroon 5 to the Rapping of Travis Scott and Big Boi formerly of Outkast, the show was well performed by all of the artists.

Adam Levine entered the stage with fireworks flaming his arrival and he proceeded to demonstrate to all that were watching why Maroon 5 is one of the world’s best selling music artists. With 109 million singles sold and 27 million albums sold and his collaboration with Rapper Cardi B “Girls Like You” peaked at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and received a Grammy nomination, it’s a safe bet that  Maroon 5 is hot!

The half time show was not without its controversy over the appearance of the artists that chose to perform over boycotting the half-time event in support of Colin Kaepernick who chose to not stand up during the performance of the “National Anthem” back in 2016 and instead took to his knee.  Kaepernick did this to make a statement about the climate of racial injustice.  Kaepernick had his lawyer call out Maroon 5 for performing as well as enlisting the aid of performers such as JayZ and Cardi B.  From my perspective it seems as if Levine was taking the bulk of the heat over the other performers.

Levine/Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big boi worked out a deal with the NFL to donate their fees to charities which seemed like a good idea.  This all took place prior to the actual half-time show and should have been over and done with.

Enter Levine’s now infamous strip tease during his performance, which was pretty tame if anyone were to ask my elderly opinion.  The coat came off and then the shirt and there he was in his bare-chested glory.  As I looked at Levine’s fine form I was thinking “Wow, the dude’s been working out and when did he get that California tattoo? Cool.”

There was a lot of panning and put downs of Maroon 5’s performance on the show.  Most of it was done by musicians that have only been able to wish they had the success that Maroon 5/Levine have had. Aside from thinking that it’s pretty nervy of anyone to expect a performer to give up a chance to perform to a viewing public that is global, one must ask when Kaepernick made the decision to not stand during the National Anthem shouldn’t he be willing to accept the consequences of his actions and not expect anyone else to forgo their professional aspirations?  In other words, “own it.”

I am not saying that Kaepernick was wrong to do what he did.  There are times that I have not stood at the playing of the National Anthem at the Hollywood Bowl.  Granted it wasn’t for such a noble purpose as his was, but I just don’t think it’s worth all of the hoopla.  Kaepernick is guaranteed the freedom of choice by our Constitution just as Maroon 5 are.  That freedom is part of what makes this country great.

Now the FCC claims it has over 50 complaints about Levine’s “nipplegate” incident at the half-time show.  The FCC is saying that people are claiming gender inequality.  The complainers’ point of reference is an incident that occurred back in 2004 at Super Bowl XXXVIII.  The incident involved Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake.  The two were performing and Timberlake exposed Jackson’s nipple.  Jackson was left to handle the onslaught of outrage over her nipple being exposed while Timberlake was MIA and never did pay the piper for his choice to pull Jackson’s top down exposing her nipple.  Somehow a correlation between the events has been drawn.

The FCC contends that a case has been made as to why did Jackson get in trouble and not Levine.  I hate to break it to them, but there is a very distinct difference between men and women’s nipples.  A man’s nipples are not an object of sexual desire as a woman’s are.  Personally, I’ve never looked at Levine’s nipples, or any man’s nipples for that matter, and said “Will you get a load of his nipples. Aren’t those the most perfect breasts you’ve ever seen?”

Besides, when one considers that this show was global, how does a bit over 50 complaints equal enough to levy a fine on Levine and the channel that televised the event?  Are men going to be arrested for indecent exposure at the beach because they are only wearing a bathing suit bottom?  Or how about boxers when they fight in their shorts are they going to be fined and the channel that televises the event?  Please!

To take this another step further, how about the Grammy Awards a few weeks ago?  There was so much S&M costuming on the stage that I kept looking for the whips. What about that “fight cage” that had them fake brawling? Or how about that one get up with the tiny dress and the garter belt hanging down, and I hear she went commando.  Music fan Marie Ornedo  said “She had on more make-up than she did an outfit.”  This is just one of many complaints that I received over the Grammy Awards.

At the very least, the Grammy people should be arrested for the attempted murder of rock n’ roll as they did not air the awards that involved rock n’ roll such as Greta Van Fleet and Chris Cornell.

The performances had Rhythm and Blues and Rap, Country and Motown, but no real rock n’ roll outside of the collaboration of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Post Malone, which still defies definition.  Lady GaGa is Pop and not Rock.

At the end of the day what I am trying to say is that we always have the right to change the channel to something more appropriate than a bunch of men beating the crap out of each other on the football field. I do question a parent’s judgement when allowing their offspring to view something as violent as football.  If you don’t like it, change the channel!

As for myself, I plan on watching the Oscars.  Queen will be performing “Bohemian Rhapsody” and, in a business that is notorious for floundering when it comes to portraying accurate rock n’ roll stories, “Bohemian Rhapsody” hits the ball out of the park with the best portrayal in ages.

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Forgetting, Not Forgotten”

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Forgetting, Not Forgotten.” Written and Performed by Petal D’Avril.  Directed and Developed by Rebecca Lynn Johnson.

Petal’s story is one of loss, love, strength and gentrification.

It begins at her home in Los Angeles where she lives with her mother and sister, a home her mother has lived in for 40 years or more, where the girls were born and brought up and a neighborhood filled with memories and old friends.  Her mother has a fall while the girls are at work and, while they are all in the hospital with her, they learn that she has early onset Alzheimer’s.  Their world changes drastically in that moment and, while Petal and her sister learn to cope with all that her mother now needs from them, the roles of mother and child reversing as they often do. They are told by their landlords that their home is sold and they must move out.

It’s an awful lot to process for two young women who had plans and dreams of their own, now they must find a place to live and work and somewhere to support their mother’s needs.  How tragic it is for them that when a home is what they need the most, it is taken from them in such a heartless and brutal way. Gentrification is a soulless monster and it’s everywhere…

Petal is such a beautiful soul, petit but fierce and strong, her spirit lifts this sad story. Even while she herself weeps and we with her, there is such a light from her, such a hope that we can’t help but smile.  She presents this story as a quest, a long journey and one she still walks, but one filled with grace in the face of adversity and love in place of hate.

Solo plays are at their most magical when they are at their most intimate. This story is ongoing and unfolding still.  Petal shares her fears and her triumphs and her tragedies with poise and with purpose.  She finds her light in this and we find it with her. There is beauty in all our stories and especially in this one…Bravo Petal!!!

The world has more in store for you, and you have much more to give it…

Whitefire Solofest Presents “Uprooted”

Whitefire Solofest Presents “Uprooted.” Written and Performed by Vanessa Boss. Directed and Developed by Jessica Lynn-Johnson.

This is a truly magical play.

The play opens with Vanessa as a tree, waving her arms like branches moving in the wind.  The tree represents her home, her need to feel secure and rooted in the world. And the wise old tree is in trouble, she needs a forever home.

Vanessa Boss has written a beautiful, mythological play, created to share the story of her young self searching for her place in a world where she has little control over where she goes, when she moves and what she can call home.

As a child, her father moved the family eight times before she graduated high school, which is a lot, especially for a girl as deeply in touch with the universe as Vanessa clearly is.  Remaking a home so many times was painful, disorienting and made her little bright soul dimmer and dimmer.

She uses all the voices in her head as wonderful and diverse individual characters who advise and guide and sometimes wreak havoc in her life. Vanessa mesmerizes her audience and connects in such a indefinable, hilarious, deeply moving way that I spent most of the evening either laughing or crying.

Oh and there’s the plane. Vanessa quite brilliantly, I think, used a plane to take us all back and forth between the important moments in Vanessa’s life, from early childhood through high school and beyond.  Those times of joy, sadness and disappointment that we all have our own memories of, you know, the ones we lie awake at night remembering.

With the help of her ‘stewardess’ – another brilliant character, giving her the ability to move through time and space with little to no turbulence – Vanessa’s plane was the perfect vehicle to tour her life and to ultimately bring us all safely home.

Vanessa Boss is an absolutely masterful storyteller.

Genuine, open, truthful, authentic and with that magical ability to entertain effortlessly that is rare and precious.  Hers is a story that resonates and uplifts as it unfolds so perfectly onstage.  Her talent as an actress is only matched by her talent as a writer. I do hope the world will see far more of both.  Bravo!!!

The Business of Acting 2019 – PART II – Managing your Time

Last month I talked about how it’s that time of the year; a time where many of us make resolutions, do self-evaluations and initiate change.

If you’ve followed my blogs over the past several years, you’ll recall that in January I like to start with a conversation about the Business of Acting.

Acting is a business and requires a business plan. It is important to set goals, create and execute tasks, and hold yourself accountable. You are your own boss.  At the beginning of each new year, I require all my students to participate in an intensive workshop where we face our demons, set goals, and put ourselves into action. For some, it can be an extremely confrontational experience. Just training in the craft is not enough; you need to make business decisions and take business actions. We start the conversation with each actor assessing the past year and evaluating where they are in their career. Last month’s checklist was Part I of the discussion; this month, I’d like to continue by talking about Time Management.

The following is an assignment that I gave to my students. I’d like to share it with you so you have an opportunity to evaluate where you are and find out if you are spending enough time on your business. Try it for a month.

FIRST TWO WEEKS

  • Find or create a page-per-day calendar with times broken down to every 15 minutes.
  • For two weeks, record in your calendar what you do every day. Don’t change anything; just look at what you already do.
  • That includes when you go to sleep, when you get up, your work schedule, class(es), dates, social life, laundry, shopping, free time, auditions, exercise, hobbies, walking your dog, watching TV, going to the movies or theater, even binge watching Netflix.

WEEK THREE AND FOUR

  • At the end of two weeks, go back through your calendar and see how much time you are spending on the “business” of acting. I don’t mean class or rehearsing, or actually working as an actor, I mean “business” things.
  • Things like submitting yourself for auditions, sending out emails and mailings, making phone calls, submitting to and contacting agents, managers, and casting directors. These things are the nuts and bolts of being your own manager.
  • How much time are you dedicating to your business? 3 hours a week? 5 hours? Zero hours?
  • Once you see your schedule laid out in front of you in writing, you will discover where you are wasting time or not being productive.
  • Next, schedule in a few hours each week to focus on business things – things that we tend to procrastinate about and hate to do, like make calls.
  • Be realistic. Don’t try to do too much. As we all know, most New Year’s resolutions are abandoned by mid-February. Crash diets don’t work.
  • If you noticed you spent no time on it, start with 3-5 hours per week.

WEEK FIVE AND FORWARD

  • Assess how you did for those second two weeks. Did you stick with your plan? Was it easy? Was it hard? What changes can you make to set yourself up for success?
  • Evaluate your schedule and see if you can increase your hours. If you started with 3 -5 hours a week, can you add a few more?
  • Keep your calendar going and schedule your time.
  • Remember, very successful and busy people – the President, Senators, Movie Stars, and Bill Gates have the same number of hours in a day that you do. How you manage your time is crucial.
  • This work can be very confrontational but will allow you to see where you are wasting time, avoiding, or being in denial.
  • Every two weeks from here, evaluate and adjust.
  • Set reasonable goals for yourself and as you achieve them, gradually increase the time you spend on your business.

This is a great chance to build and sharpen your business skills. It is will also help you hold yourself accountable and feel like you’re in control of your career and destiny. These skills tend to be difficult for artists because many don’t like to do this work and prefer to just be an artist. You have to do both if you want to be successful in this business. But a little time and dedication is all it takes – you can do this!

Good luck and don’t forget to schedule me in for next month’s blog!

Keep on working!

Fran Montano

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Clara: Sex, Love and Classical Music”

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Clara: Sex, Love and Classical Music.” Written and Performed by Elena Mazzon.  Musical Performance by Stefania Passamonte.

This play is a beautiful and timely examination of how, in so many ways, very little has changed for ambitious, driven and talented women who marry and have children.

Back in Europe in the 19th century, even in the far more radical world of the arts, a wife was second to her husband. If she wanted to enjoy a sex life she should expect to remain permanently pregnant or risk imprisonment for the crime of birth control.

Well, perhaps there has been some progress…

Elena Mazzon has created something very, very special.  She takes the stage as Clara with a piano as her costar and then walks us through Clara’s early life, her relationship to her unyielding father who guided and controlled the formation of her spectacular talent as a pianist.  Then her marriage to Robert Schumann, causing a lifelong rift with her father.  Her struggle to cope with her subsequent numerous children, being able to tour and to continue to write her music, the difficulties with her relationship with her husband and his mental deterioration, financial woes and the friendship and then love affair with Johannes Brahms.  She has done all this with unflinching pragmatism and humor celebrating Clara as she exposes the hypocrisy and the frustrations of a woman’s life then and now.

What a life she had, this brilliant, celebrated and yet, to most of the world at least, much forgotten woman.  She was considered one of the most distinguished composers and pianists of the Romantic era, yet have you heard her name?

Elena plays a little of her music while she embodies Clara so brilliantly on stage. But once the play itself is over and after a short break, we were treated to the phenomenal concert pianist Stefania Passamonte performing six of Clara Schumann’s gorgeous pieces, with her own personal take on what really happened between Schumann and Brahms and how much she truly loved her husband.

This is an evening of grace, humor, revelation, deeply and thoughtfully wrought and beautifully written conversation with an icon of feminism from a time long before that term even existed.

Elena Mazzon is breathtaking as Clara.  I cannot thank her enough for her performance and her brilliance, her devotion to the story, her creativity in its execution and for the music…the glorious, sublime music of Clara Schumann performed by the wonderful and warmly talented Stefania Passamonte.

Sometimes, on a rainy night in a small theatre in Sherman Oaks, magic happens…

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Hollywoodn’t”

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Hollywoodn’t.” Written and Performed by Lisa Verlo.  Directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson.

Show business is sex. Lisa Verlo has taken that concept to the extreme and created a hilarious, entertaining and extremely truthful account of her version of that very fact.

“Hollywoodn’t” is a solo show built around the age-old and blatant use of the casting couch in Hollywood.  Sure, things have changed a bit, or at least the #METOO movement has forced us to stop making excuses or look the other way or act astonished when reading about yet another sex for roles scandal or penis flashing on set or demolished career of someone who didn’t want to play along.

Lisa “exposes” her stories to us in such a brilliantly funny and creative way.  There are gorgeous songs, so sweetly sung and some wonderful and fantastical stop motion animation films with Barbie and Ken dolls in all sorts of lovely positions!

She invites us into her world and gives us the grand tour…warts and all! What endeared me to her the most was her vulnerability – not weakness, not silliness, nothing wimpy or insipid, just open hearted and joyous and profoundly real.

From her childhood obsession with her hoo-hoo to her unfiltered and unapologetic naming of names, on her journey through it all, she has the audience in the palm of her hand.  She is playful, she is honest and she is strong. What more can we ask for in our heroes?

I love solo shows the most when they hold you close as they show you everything. Lisa Verlo does exactly that. She has that rare gift of connecting to the audience on an almost cellular level. She is fierce and brave and wise and absolutely hilarious…Bravo!!!

Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents: “Through My Eyes”

Written and Performed by Angel Guice.  Directed by Juliette Jeffers

This multidimensional and multi-faceted solo show opens with a powerful and brilliant dance.

Angel Guice sings as she dances to “Childish Gambino’s “This is America.  Video and pictures projected on a screen behind her.  Terrible images of death and injustice and violence, yet she dances with power and purpose and urgency, stripping down to a bikini as she does. Baring herself as she prepares to bare her soul.  The echos of Gambino’s lyrics hanging in the air as we watch her.

It’s quite an opening to her story and it sets the tone for her entire play.  She is unashamed, she is emboldened and she is free…  She tells her tale as some kind of epic, heroic journey…a fable, a myth that feels all too familiar lately.  Is survival living?  Angel’s boldly lived and brilliantly told tale is one that teaches us all how to thrive in spite of adversity and setbacks and self-doubt.

What stood out for me was her honesty and the way she was able to create a world onstage that she inhabited in every conceivable way.   She owned the stage, but she did so with grace and a startlingly humble presence.  The music, the dance, the multimedia all enhanced what was already a fascinating and complex life.  Compellingly told, heart-achingly real.  There is sadness and struggle and loss, but there is so much hope

Angel’s life force propels this play.  Her need to share herself is what makes this piece work so well.  She is unable to fit into anyone’s conception of who she should be, she bursts out of her own skin, blossoming on stage in front of our eyes.  Her story and her journey and her ever-evolving imagining of who she is now and who she will become is everywhere for us to see…it’s a really beautiful play, full of soul and love and skillfully wrought, unforgettable moments of her life. Bravo!

Run for Beer?

Run for Beer? YES! Brews Brothers Running Club (formerly Pitfire Running Club) is the NoHo Arts District’s social running club!

Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a newbie, you can still enjoy the health benefits of a good run along with making a whole new set of friends. And did we mention, there’s beer?

Jill Hoffman, a Brews Brothers Running Club officer, answered some questions for us.

What are the run details?

WHEN:

Mondays at 6:15 p.m. (we run at 6:30 p.m.)

WHERE:

Brews Brothers
5140 Lankershim Blvd.
North Hollywood, CA 91601

ROUTE:

Brews Brothers north to Chandler Blvd.;
Chandler Blvd. east to Vineland Ave.;
Cross Vineland Ave.;
Chandler Bikeway east to Pass Ave.;
turn around at Pass Ave. and return to Brews Brothers.

COST: FREE!

Why did you choose Brews Brothers as your running club “headquarters?”

When we learned that Pitfire would be undergoing construction, we needed to find a new place to meet. In November, we began looking at multiple possibilities in the immediate area. One night, we noticed a new craft beer bar had just opened up, and it was only a block from Pitfire. It was Brews Brothers.  Spacious and inviting and offering 42 craft beers on tap (runners love beer!), a food menu consisting of artisan sandwiches, fresh salads, charcuterie boards and other small bites, as well as pool tables and other games, it seemed perfect! One night, a couple of us approached one of Brews Brothers’ partners about our club needing a new home and he could not have been more gracious and supportive. We then had a formal meeting in December to discuss the details of the partnership and became Brews Brothers Running Club as of January. Did we mention that food is 20% off for club members? We are so grateful to Brews Brothers and plan to keep it as our permanent home.

Tell us more about the relaunch party!

The relaunch party will be on Monday, February 25 at 6 p.m. We will be doing our usual route, but the run itself will be a twist on a scavenger hunt, and “treasures” found will be redeemable for raffle tickets. In addition to a raffle with many great prizes, such as race entries and Goodr sunglasses, Hoka One One will be doing shoe demos, Vision for Enrichment will be giving free massages and food will be 20% off. We are still working out some of the details, so there should be some fun surprises too! Admission is free, but we request that people RSVP by sending an email to brewsbrothersrunclub@gmail.com.

What if you’re not a good runner yet? What if a runner is slower?

Brews Brothers Running Club is an inclusive club open to runners of all levels! Our club has many paces to choose from, as well as several experienced runners who can provide guidance to people who might just be coming back to running or who have never run at all. For example, a combination of running and walking might be suggested. And if you don’t feel like running, you can walk with us! There is always someone there to join you on the route and socialize with afterwards.

What fun things do you have planned coming up?

Every Monday is fun at Brews Brothers Running Club! Other than the relaunch party, we don’t have anything on the calendar yet. However, we are talking about such fun things as weekend runs (followed by food and beer, of course!), club representation at local races benefitting some local non-profits, a pint glass etching party and more! People can follow Brews Brother Running Club on Facebook to stay up to date on all club happenings.

Artists and creative people alike deal with a lot of emotional instability and stressors that could lead to an increase in mental health symptoms. As someone who considered herself a creative person, it was not easy pursuing something that others thought was a waste of time or not financially lucrative.

LA Mind and Body via www.nohoartsdistrict.com
Jackie Benavente, LMFT

I remember deciding in my early 20s that I was going to be a writer. I enrolled in an undergrad creative writing program, and off I went to explore books, solace in writing, and the criticism that’s so necessary as a writer. My mother had no idea what I was doing. Outside of the excitement that I was enrolling in college, the big question, “What are you going to do with a creative writing degree?” was always present. By the time I was obtaining my Masters in Creative Writing, I realized that, I didn’t know what I was going to do with a creative writing degree. I did it because it’s what I loved, and if I was going to study anything, it was writing. Now I was in fight or flight mode. At first I fought; I looked into careers as a writer. I tried to pursue other avenues such as writing music lyrics, writing for magazines, and even working in a big publish house in their sales department. At least I would be around books, I thought. However, as with life, you put the energy in and it leads you to where you really need to be. My plan B ended up being what I truly fell in love with which was the field of psychology.

I recently opened LA Mind and Body in North Hollywood, to offer affordable mental health therapy to the arts community and Spanish-speaking families of the Valley.  I’ve created a list of symptoms to be mindful of if you’re an artist and are wondering how you might be affected by stressors and your mental health.

1. Family, friends and loved ones sometimes have a hard time being supportive of a career in the creative or performance arts. “I want to be an actor, dancer, or artist,” is usually received with the comment, “Okay well how are going to make money?” Or this one, “How are you supporting yourself and do you think this is sustainable?” And I get it, it’s a valid question, but it doesn’t feel good to have to defend what makes you happy. Obviously this can start to affect your reactions when someone asks you what you do, and possibly your self-esteem.

2. Feeling every feeling. I’ve worked with many artists who like being manic or depressed. This is VERY common. During these periods of time your mood is obviously unstable. For some artists they report that they feel more creative and it’s easier to paint, write, or to get into character. They’ve learned to use this shift in mood to their favor. The dangers of this, is that a mental health disorder left untreated could worsen. You’re also putting yourself at risk. Mania could also lead to psychosis, a decrease in insight, and engaging in high risk, dangerous behaviors.

3. Financial instability. I think the biggest stressor in life is not having enough money. Many artists have to deal with not knowing whether they’re going to have enough money next week or next month. And not having money for rent, food, gas or daily living takes over everything else. I always tell my clients..How can you work on your most recent stressor, when your worrying about how you’re going to eat or where you’re going to live? It makes sense. Stress could lead to many other issues, including the following: psychosomatic symptoms (back/shoulder pain, eye twitching, stomach ache/nausea), panic attacks, trouble sleeping or eating, trouble focusing, overall feeling jumpy or on edge.

4. Constant rejection or evaluation of your work by auditions, managers, and/or agents. At most jobs we have yearly or sometimes even quarterly reviews of our work. Artists are judged on their work ALL the time. They receive positive or negative praise by their manager or talent agents. The positive reinforcement happens when they secure a job. This constant evaluation could lead to anxiety, depression, stress, and decrease a person’s self-esteem and self-worth.

5. Addiction. Although addiction affects everyone, artists can sometimes be more susceptible due to the following: Lack of structured days. As we know in the addiction world, structure is necessary to help keep people sober, especially early in recovery. As I mentioned earlier, artists who might go untreated due to lack of resources, could use drugs or alcohol to deal with their symptoms. This ties also into how an artist might deal with financial stress or the ups and downs of rejection or criticism.

6. Lack of medical or mental health treatment, due to lack of insurance. We now have Covered California, which is our low-cost medical insurance in California. But, even with medical insurance, mental health treatment is typically not covered. At community clinics, adults are typically offered case management, but not mental health support. There are a lot of programs that artists should be aware of such as the following:

The Actors Fund offers social service support to working artists. www.actorsfund.org

Musicares offers financial and recovery support for musicians. www.grammy.com/musicares

SAMHSA- Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This is my go-to, when I’m looking for mental health services or addiction referrals for someone with no insurance, or low income. www.samhsa.gov

11 Attractive Lavender and Purple Hair Colours in Ombre and Balayage

Dare To Flare: 11 Elegant Lavender and Purple Hair Colours 2019

hair3.jpg

Pastels are the talk of the town right now, and what better colour of pastel than super feminine and flattering lavender hair? Lilac, lavender and purple hair shades are the best choices since they are not common, nevertheless very smooth and subtle.

So if you are planning to go for the pale purple, stop; we have beautiful purple hair colour ideas for you! Here we will elaborate some of the best and trendiest purple hair colour ideas in 2019. We will also demonstrate how to take care of each purple or lavender hair colour of your choice. Take a look here for inspiration.

  1. Purple Ombre Beautiful Braid.

This ombre to purple hair is enchanting, but it also reveals how ombres are great in hairstyling. This purple haircut is basically a fishtail braid that is included into a French braid giving an impression of a visual painting. It is also hard to define where the blending of this style starts and ends.

  1. Messy Lavender Mermaid.

This is a straightforward look with solid lavender hair dyed entirely. You can, however, opt to style the hair somehow messy and include flattering layers at the front to give a perfect frame to the face. That gives this glittery metallic hue a little natural look just like that of ocean waves.

  1. Warm And Cool Balayage.

This dual-toned purple hair balayage is a beautiful mixture of warm and cool hues of purple that looks great on most skin undertones. Maintaining the roots dark saves you regular visits to the salon. The combination of the loose half knot at the top and relaxed curls is a sleek and simple look.

  1. Lavender and Silver Bob.

Super light, feathery bobs match well with ombres, and this is one of our best examples of bobbed lavender colour idea this year.

The silvery grey at the crown melts into a flattering metallic lavender smoothly thanks to the glitter in both colours.

  1. Lavender and Galaxy Balayage.

Purple hair blends really seamlessly with indigo to give you a super stylish hair colour look. This balayage is an excellent example to prove this.

It starts with a dark indigo base and dramatically melts into light purple hair colour at the ends.

  1. Retro Mermaid Ombre.

This rich and extravagant lavender shade combines cold and warm purple hair tones to rock most skin tones. Long and thick curls with magenta colour are a little 40s style and mermaid look.

  1. Smoke and Garnet Balayage.

The shades in this beautiful balayage hairstyle are stunningly painted, and the golden glow shows how strong and healthy the locks are. The combination of darker and lighter colours of lavender and violet gives this style a lot of touch and dimension.

  1. Crown Braid Balayage.

If you are after a purple hair shade that will not affect your hair negatively, you should stick to the darker roots. The indigo hues and hand painted lavender blend seamlessly to give dimension and lushness to the top fishtail style.

  1. Violet Flower Half Updo.

Go bright with these beautiful lilac, indigo and lavender hair colours. In this style, the indigo is used for the roots, and the other two hues are streaked throughout the ends. The fancy updo at the top brings the illusion of flower shape and touch.

  1. Exotic Ocean Waves.

Mixing silver, indigo blue, lavender and pale blue hair shades gives your hair a tropical ocean impact. Even though the only subtle touch of lavender runs through the warm bunch of shades, it provides the entire style a pop of brightness that makes it unique.

  1. Smoky Lavender Bob.

For the past few years, many people thought that the purple hair worked with long hair only. However, the news in town now is that it can work well with bobs. This slanted bob haircut is a good example. A blend of smoky lavenders and darker violets mixes gorgeously in this cute hairstyle.

It is a gorgeous hairstyle colour combo that can be worn for both official and unofficial events.

The Next Generation of Entrepreneurs: 3 Main Educational Trends

The world is continuously changing whether technologically or culturally.

Many businessespractices in the past no longer have a place in the current business system. Market dynamics are continually shifting each day as we speak. Take a good example, traditional advertisement techniques used by many businesses like advertising your product on cable TV no longer has a place in today’s society. Most companies are now embracing online marketing. More people connect to the internet than ever. This is what I meant by shifting market dynamics. So, if the market dynamics are changing, so should the entrepreneurs.

How do the entrepreneurs change?

Through education. As an entrepreneur, you should be willing to learn new business practices and techniques to remain relevant in the future. Past curriculum in entrepreneurship is updated continuously and old ones phased out. Those tasked with updating this curriculum are those in the teaching profession. They should not only give their protégés fish but also teach them how to fish. What I mean of course is that the educators should equip trainees with the necessary knowledge and also expose them to the changing business environment. The future is entirely uncertain, hence the need. Here are some points to consider when preparing the next generation of entrepreneurs.

Personalized education

In the past, the curriculum evolved around passing exams in your course. It relied heavily on what you have. The current curriculum trains you on what you can do. There is no memorizing to pass exams; you are being prepared for the real life experience from day one. The current society needs people who are very flexible, to embrace change. A good entrepreneurial student needs to be a problem solver. You should identify a problem and take advantage of it by presenting a solution. This is how essential brands started in the first place. They identified a problem a customer can relate and offered a solution to them. In some cases, students aren’t able to write essays because they lack time, so they refer to writing services. Sometimes students lack not only time but also money, so they want to find college paper for sale.

Educators should encourage creativity, by presenting real-life challenges to students. They should be able to learn and think, not listen and cram. Be innovative in teaching them the basics. Ditch textbooks and embrace digital e-books. That is the change we are talking about.

Hands-on approach

Educators should expose their students to the real obstacles in a business environment, to force them to think. In a situation like this, they have to come up with problem-solving solutions. Expose them to experimentation by making them work with different tools in business. In this way, they will be incorporated into the learning environment. They should not be passive learners but active learners who are willing to try out different methods in the learning process. They take a leading role in structuring their learning environment.

Students should never dread about failing. Most entrepreneurs know the term failing forward. It merely means that failing is an opportunity in itself, it prepares you for future obstacles in business. You get to learn from your failures. No business environment is smooth flowing; there are challenges on the way. Hence the need to plan for them.

Students should learn to lead

Educators should at this point take a break and let students run the show. Let students showcase their activities by making them take charge. Allow them to use projectors and mobile devices to lead collective lessons. Let them design their learning environment that suits their interests going forward. Of course, the instructors will be there for oversight and to see if the students are learning something. They should use this opportunity to make mistakes and learn how to correct these mistakes.

By doing this, your students will be able to think and learn. They will feel like an entrepreneur during problem-solving situations. This will give those ideas on how to start, maintain and improve a business. Incorporate technology in the learning environment. As technology improves, we need people who can spearhead the way forward. People who can incorporate technology into the business environment.

Conclusion

Times are changing, so should we. Let us equip the next generation with skills that will help them with the shifting market dynamics. Advocate for changes in curriculum to make the next generation of learners more of leaders and problem solvers than just employees. They should have the ability to incubate new ideas and actualize them in the business market. For anyone to survive in the current business environment, you should either be an innovator or a contributor. Every business organization needs a strategy to survive in the market.

Whitefire Theatres Solofest Presents “My Own X-rated Words”

Whitefire Theatres Solofest presents “My Own X-rated Words,” written and directed by Fredrica Duke, and performed by Pam Levin.

This is a play that absolutely lives up to its name.

Fredrica Duke has lived quite a life and I’m oh so thankful she decided to share a little of it with us.  “My Own X-Rated Words” is a hilarious, graphic, bold and thoroughly entertaining account of her early days as a fresh faced young actress in LA during the 70s and 80s. She holds nothing back as she revisits memory after memory, sexual encounters – good and bad – misogyny, harassment, bad advice, cute boys and quite a few Hollywood assholes.

The point of this show, so brilliantly and skillfully acted by the phenomenal Pam Levin, is not just to shock, although there is plenty of that, I think it’s to remind us all not to judge ourselves harshly, or label ourselves foolishly, or to pay into anyone else’s bullshit idea of who we ought to be.  We are all just running around banging into things trying our best not to make too much of a mess after all and no one really knows anything, do they?  God, this brings back some hair-raising memories of my own I can tell you. I often wonder how I survived the 80s. This funny, heartfelt, sometimes stingingly honest play captures just beautifully a young girl living her life out loud.  No apologies, no time to waste, few limits and a ton of heart. Fredrica Duke is a bit of a legend in her own right, a little bit punk, a little bit libertine, a little bit lost girl finding out she’s perfect just as she is.

I’m thrilled she picked Pam to play her.  Pam has the same kind of wild endearing spirit and it was easy to accept that Pam was Fredrica.  Easy to see Pam making similar choices and giving just as many craps about them.  Pam is performing in three plays for this Solofest, the next one being on March 6th, “The Quiet Room,” which I’m sure it will be just as excellent as this.

How lucky we are to have brilliant, gifted, unapologetic and driven women like Fredrica and Pam to fill us with inspiration, joy, love and laugh.  Honestly, they were rolling in the aisles…life is good!

Cold Pursuit; Roma; BlackkKlansman

Film Review Cold Pursuit; Roma; BlackkKlansman

January and February have been traditionally lean months when it comes to new releases, but there is usually some new Liam Neeson action thriller to distract us from the cinematic doldrums.  (Of course, this year there was his recent confessional, which contrary to the intent, didn’t win him many new fans.)  Last year, there was Neeson’s turn as The Commuter, and while it was reported that it would be his farewell to such action-driven films, happily this is not the case. Cold Pursuit, directed by Hans Petter Moreland, is an American remake of his 2014 Norwegian film In Order of Disappearance, and stars Neeson as a snowplow driver in a resort town in Colorado whose peaceful existence is shattered when his son dies from a self-inflicted drug overdose. (We know better.)

Neeson soon discovers the truth behind his son’s death, but in order to exact vengeance, he has to go through (as in kill) the rank and file of the local drug cartel, whose leader is played by Tom Bateman; at the same time, Neeson’s actions have inadvertently triggered a war between two rival drug lords: Bateman, as his real nemesis, and Tom Jackson as a rival native American drug lord whom Bateman believes is initially responsible for the disappearance of his own men. (Laura Dern is also on hand as Neeson’s wife, but she isn’t given much to do.)

What distinguishes Cold Pursuit from previous Neeson action jaunts is the dark humor that manifests itself throughout, as well as the number of quirky (if ill-fated) characters that dot the landscape. As I parenthetically noted, most do not make it to the credits, each demise duly noted by a frame containing the character’s name (or nickname) and a cross. These include some very close henchmen, an imported assassin of dubious morality, an unlucky apparel store owner, another henchman who likes to frequent motel rooms with a handy twenty-dollar bill, Neeson’s ex-cop brother (William Forsythe) and his very young wife, to name but a few. Each of these characters is given a vignette (or two), and much of the dialogue is sharp, amusing, and even occasionally poignant. There is even a dogged police officer (Emily Rossum) who has a feeling that “something is going down”, but she is also given too little time to register strongly. Some of the action scenes are brutal, but again, as in Neeson’s The Commuter, much is made of the character’s age and the limitations that accompany it. There are also glimpses of Neeson’s tender side (some other reviews notwithstanding) in his interactions with his chief nemesis’s bullied young son, and a satisfying payoff. Cold Pursuit is one February release that is worth chasing down; you’ll also be treated to some of the most beautiful and haunting cinematography you’ll see so far this year, courtesy of Philip Ogaard, with Canada and British Columbia standing in for Colorado.

Speaking of cinematography, it is fundamentally absurd that the Oscars should relegate cinematography, and editing awards to “commercial break-land,” to be resurrected later in the broadcast (edited of course!) Anyone who appreciates motion pictures knows these are both essential elements of filmmaking, and that these artists deserve to be seen and recognized in prime time.

Having said that, I’ll be the first to admit Roma, written, directed and photographed by Alfonso Cuaron is among the most beautifully and lovingly filmed movies of the year. I will also say that it could also use a good editor, as much of Roma is dramatically inert, with a first forty minutes that meanders too much for the story it is trying to tell. It may be the intention of the creator to immerse us in every aspect of his upbringing and the housekeeper’s life—but it doesn’t necessarily make for compelling cinema. (I’m aware my opinion is not shared by members of the Academy.) and  There are a few powerful scenes and images, mainly having to do with Mexico’s political unrest, but there are also scenes that merely repeat what has been seen already suggested (presumably subtly) in the film (domestic unhappiness, economic and social discontent). I bear Roma no malice—it can stay among the nominated features. I wish the academy would have made room for The Death of Stalin, which remains, on second and third viewing, a savagely funny political satire with a flawless cast.

I also finally caught up with BlackkKlansman, which represents some of Spike Lee’s best work yet, and has been nominated for six Oscars. It tells the story of a black Colorado policeman (Another film set in Colorado but filmed elsewhere—Colorado, where are your tax breaks?) who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan, thanks to initial phone conversations with white men who have their own ideas what black men sound like—and a fellow white officer (Adam Driver) who represents him in face-to-face dealings with the Klan. Lee’s film, based on (but not totally adhering to) real-life events is provocative, funny, tense, suspenseful, and unfortunately all too relevant. John David Washington (Denzel’s son) and Driver are terrific, as is Topher Grace as the Klan’s leader David Duke, and Harry Belafonte provides some powerful moments recounting the case of lynching victim Jesse Washington. Definitely worth seeing—either in theaters or on your home screen.

The Garry Marshall Theatre Presents “The Mountaintop”

The Garry Marshall Theatre Presents “The Mountaintop” – Written by Katori Hall. Directed by Gregg T. Daniel.

February 6 through March 10, Friday & Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 3pm

Katori Hall is one of the most celebrated playwrights of her generation.

She has earned multiple awards and numerous prestigious fellowships in support of her work. Now that I have seen one of her plays, I can truly understand why.

“The Mountaintop” is set on the evening before the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He is alone in his room at the Lorraine Motel having sent his friend to the store for more cigarettes.  While he waits for his return, he is visited by a young woman, a maid named Camae, who brings him the coffee he ordered from the motel room service.

Mountaintop 2

What happens next is the kind of effortless and deeply meaningful writing that makes a masterpieces. Dr. King and this majestic maid talk, they spar, they smoke, they flirt and, in the very best tradition of the most magical of realisms, we are drawn into their strange and poetic relationship.  This wonderful playwright has chosen carefully this particularly painful moment in time, a moment that continues to echo stronger than ever in this land and all others.  This brutal and retrospectively inevitable act broke open the civil rights movement and our hearts in such a fundamental way that we as a nation have never recovered…and many would say we never should.

Dr. King was a leader, a gifted and inspiring speaker, a hero, but he was also a man, full of flaws, fears and his own trepidation.  This astonishingly beautiful play seeks to give him to us at his most fragile, his most raw and his most true.  We watch as he begins to understand why he is in that motel room with this particular maid on this particular night and it is a revelation.

To tell you more would be to open up this precious gift for you and I will not do that.  But I will tell you this, I have never been so moved, so deeply touched, so very thankful to sit in my seat in a darkened theatre…barely breathing.

One can never bare witness enough to this man and his astonishing moment in our collective history, but this finely wrought and achingly beautiful play goes further than anything yet to give gravitas and greatness to it.

The performances are equally impressive.  Gilbert Glenn Brown is powerful, moving and stunningly honest as Dr King.  Carolyn Ratteray plays the maid Camae with a grace, humor and a sense of awe at her own purpose and creation that gave me chills. They both made me weep of course, their presence, those mystical and marvelous words of Katori Hall and the skill of director Gregg T. Daniel, to allow all that preternaturally prodigious glory to exist at once on stage and make sensational sense.

I must admit to being a little gobsmacked by this play at first, it took me a couple of days to fully digest it, appreciate it, roll it around in my mind over and over before I could then attempt to put into words how phenomenal it is.

I hope you see it. I think everyone on the planet should see it.

We are lucky enough to have The Mountaintop at the wonderful Garry Marshall Theatre for a few glorious weeks and I urge you to take advantage of that good fortune and spend a couple of hours with Dr. King and Camae at the Lorraine Motel on a fateful rainy night in Memphis.

Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Lemur Mom”

Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Lemur Mom” Written and Performed by Megan Dolan, and Directed by Wendy Hammers.

Sunday, January 27 at 7.30pm, Sunday March 31 at 3pm, Sunday April 28 at 3pm.

Whitefire Theatre, 13500 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

This is a play about motherhood and how hard we can be on ourselves.

As a mother myself I have had my own regular episodes of self doubt. I still do, so I can completely relate to Megan Dolan and her struggles to believe that she is the right mother for her child.

Megan’s motherhood journey has the additional spice of “the spectrum.”  Having a child who seems a little different from what we consider acceptable or normal can be challenging. I have also had my own experiences with that.  So how can any of this be entertaining, since that is what a play in the end must seek to do?

It’s a puzzle, how we can laugh at our struggles, our failures, at how we continue to bump into one obstacle after another as we navigate life.  But that is human nature I suppose and this show, “Lemur Mom,” does an extraordinary job of exploding the mother myth in hilarious, heartrending and brilliantly funny ways.  In support groups, classrooms, parks and the often dreaded birthday parties and beyond.

Megan Dolan is a star, let me just put that out there right away …she is lovely and sweet and endearing and seriously talented…but not at all in an annoyingly perfect way.  She beautifully portrays the arch of motherhood from triumphs to disasters and finding ourselves and understanding that a mother fits herself around the child and so must be as unique and singular for that child as that child is for the world.

“Lemur Mom” is a so wonderfully constructed and so exquisitely performed that it leaves no doubt in Megan’s ability to grip an audience with her story and in Wendy Hammer’s direction to support and develop and encourage Megan’s voice.

Motherhood is oddly dismissed isn’t it, as if it’s as simple as making toast or programming a satnav or splitting an atom. Megan and Wendy prove to us that it is the most difficult and the most important and life-changingly fulfilling accident to befall us lucky few.  To create people, to try to help them be good and happy and to not make too much of a mess is a privilege, even when it doesn’t feel like one from time to time.  Bravo to them both for giving us permission to laugh at what we sometimes can only cry about.

Megan has performed stories for the Moth, was a featured speaker at TEDxWomen Pasadena, and has performed in numerous solo festivals and comedy shows.  Wendy has directed many other solo shows and has also worked as an actress on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “The Sopranos,” “Gray Nomad (ATC), “and her acclaimed solo show “Ripe” (national tour). As a stand up comic, she’s appeared on “Oprah” and “The Late Show with Craig Ferguson.”  So WOW for both of them.

This show is also playing on Sunday March 31 at 3pm, Sunday April 28 at 3pm so you have  absolutely no excuse to miss it and I challenge you not too…Loved it!!!!

Four Alternative Investment Ideas for 2019

The investment world has transformed dramatically in recent years.

The way our parents’ generation viewed personal investment was very different to how we view it today, and this is largely due to technological advancements. With everything from investment apps to altcoin and AI (artificial intelligence) investment advisors, there’s no limit to what the future holds for personal investment. What both generations do have in common, however, is the desire to put something aside for the future. Although the ways in which we save for retirement have gotten more advanced, the reasons we do it remain the same.

A few decades ago, investment plans were a lot more conventional. In an interview with Tom Brown, global head of investment management at KPMG stated: “If you look at the success of the industry over the past 20–30 years, it’s largely been built on the back of the baby boomer generation. It’s predominantly a male-dominated middle-class demographic.” The future of investment will be a lot more diverse in appearance and will cater to our changing social behaviour and customer needs. The days of bonds and equities are well and truly over, now we are looking toward a much more exciting range of investment ideas – ones that everybody can get behind, not just those with large amounts of cash.

Cryptocurrencies

A cryptocurrency is an encrypted online currency that is not affiliated with any one authority, making it a currency that is completely independent from the government. Although Bitcoin, the first decriminalized cryptocurrency, is currently experiencing somewhat of a lull, there are numerous alternatives to Bitcoin that are still finding success. Ethereum, Ripple and Lightcoin are hotly tipped for the coming year. A lucky investment in cryptocurrency can sometimes be very worth your while, but be warned: it is not to be taken lightly. Market volatility also exists in the cryptocurrency world.

Website URLs

Although not as fast-paced as the likes of cryptocurrencies, investing in website URLs can be a lucrative yet passive investment for the future. To be successful at it however, does require a bit of know-how. Try to anticipate big company names and the domains that would later be required for them. Bear the likes of Apple in mind: the domain apple.co.uk was bought in 2012 – years after apple.com was successfully underway. The exact cost of the acquisition is unknown, but one can only imagine how much the tech conglomerate shelled out for its UK counterpart. Keep your finger on the pulse and you could be sitting on the next highly-sought after domain!

Business startups

For those business-inclined, startups can be a fun and interesting investment. Not only does it require you to keep a close eye on any new startups on the scene, but it also allows you to invest in businesses that may specifically be of interest to you. Tip: there are countless environment-focussed startups on the 2019 horizon making efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

Peer-to-peer lending

With borrowers avoiding the bank loan route, many are looking towards peer-to-peer lending. Using one of the many online platforms dedicated to this form of lending, you can be matched with someone whose project or initiative perfectly suits your interests. This alternative is perfectly suited to those not wanting to invest a huge amount. Most peer-to-peer projects are backed by a number of different investors to share the load.

“The Mountaintop”

On April 3, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King gave one of his most famous speeches, in support of the sanitation workers in Memphis. “We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it really doesn’t matter with me now, because I’ve been to the mountaintop. Like anybody, I would like to live – a long life; longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will … I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

READ THE NOHO THEATRE REVIEW>>

Although it was as though he knew what was going to happen to him the next day, right now it is that night – a dark night — lighting and thunder crack the sky. In the moving play, “The Mountaintop,” at the Garry Marshall Theatre now through March 10, the audience finds itself in room 306, at the Lorraine Motel. Tonight, it is just another stopover motel for Dr. King. Tomorrow, it becomes the scene of one of our nation’s greatest losses.

Water stains pockmark the walls. Bright orange and fading brown 60s décor accent the room. The carpet is the color of bile. Dr. King, tired and hungry, wants cigarettes and coffee. But mostly he is weary.

Marilyn Stasio said in Variety, “Set in Memphis on the eve of his assassination, this soul-stirring drama finds King confiding his doubts, fears and morbid premonitions to a sassy motel maid [named Camae] — a deceptively trite situation that Hall transforms into an emotionally powerful and theatrically stunning moment of truth.”

“This is no ordinary night. This night King walks into his own Garden of Gethsemane and falls on his knees to face his terror and despair, to confess his fears and doubts about his mission, and to pray for the strength to accept his martyrdom. But throughout King’s long night of existential darkness, one young playwright [author Katori Hall] has seen to it that he is not alone.”

Director Gregg T. Daniel, critically acclaimed for his recent productions of A Raisin in the Sun at A Noise Within and Her Portmanteau at Boston Court, said, “I daresay this is a Dr. King unlike any perception you might have had of him. I’m hoping the audience will see Dr King as “everyman.” He was indeed an ordinary man … who had profound doubts, insecurities and fears about the position he was thrust into – but he summoned enough grace and courage to make an extraordinary difference in our world . We all have the ability to be a catalyst for change in ourselves, our communities, and our nation.”

Soyica Diggs Colbert, Professor, Department of African American Studies and Theatre & Performance Studies at Georgetown University, said, “Hall’s work engages a tradition of black writing that reimagines historical figures in order to craft revisionary and recuperative narratives and to give voice to histories that may otherwise be forgotten.”

In her forward to the published version of “The Mountaintop,” Faedra Chatard Carpenter, University of Maryland Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies faculty, said, “The radical weapon that King champions in “The Mountaintop” is a love that is all-encompassing and therefore truly revolutionary – the love that emboldens him with the greatest promise, while demanding of him the greatest sacrifice.”

At one point in the play, Camae says to Dr. King, “You have the biggest heart I done ever knownt. You have the strength to love those who could never love you back. If I had just one small fraction of the love you have for this world, then maybe, just maybe, I could become half of what you are.”

Carolyn Ratteray, who plays Camae and who is most known to audiences for her recent performance in The Cake at Geffen Playhouse, said, “After sitting with this play, it becomes even more clear to me how love is the thread that connects us throughout time and space. When I read about Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders of that era, the love they had for black people and for all of humanity is awe inspiring; I am filled with a profound gratitude.”

“My character, Camae, must discover the healing power of love. Camae learns, by witnessing the imperfections of King, that there is hope for her to rise above her own imperfections.”

“God has taught Camae about Grace. And Camae must in turn give a grace to Dr. King by letting him know that even with his faults, he is still perfect in a way. [In the play,] she and Dr. King learn that they are still deserving of giving and receiving Love and Grace. Dr. King’s passionately held vision of our best selves and of who we can become, was born from his power to love. And that Love still speaks to me, across the dimensions of past, present, and future.”

CAROLYN RATTERAY (as Camae) and GILBERT GLENN BROWN (as Dr Martin Luther King Jr). Photo by Aaron Batzdorff
CAROLYN RATTERAY (as Camae) and GILBERT GLENN BROWN (as Dr Martin Luther King Jr). Photo by Aaron Batzdorff

Garry Marshall Theatre co-artistic director Dimitri Toscas said, “The brilliance in Katori Hall’s language is her ability to capture, not only the humanity behind the legend, but the love that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had for the world at large. Somehow Hall’s language in “The Mountaintop” turns Dr. King’s love into a baton that is passed from one generation to the next, until it firmly lands in our own hand and we are called to pass that love to the next generation. Each of us becomes a point of light in this continuing history.”

In his speech Dr. King said, “Somewhere I read that the greatness of America is the right to protest for rights. And so just as I said, we aren’t going to let dogs or water hoses turn us around. We aren’t going to let any injunction turn us around. We are going on.”

Gilbert Glenn Brown, who plays Dr. Martin Luther King said, “Dr. King has always been an inspiration for me … we all get tired, we all get weary, but the difference is some quit and some journey on. Some experience the slings and arrows and stop and some experience it, heal, regroup and push forward. Dr. King’s stance was always to continue forward, always forward, with love.”

“When others don’t see your vision the way you do, or your dream the way you see it, and even as your inner-circle may have their doubts, having that faith in what you’re here to share with the world is key –and so motivational for me.”

“The key to playing Dr. King was finding his humanity. Over the last 50 years we’re almost bombarded by an almost perfect form of Dr. King. He never saw himself as perfect, but as a man who had to stand up for right, for love, for compassion, for change. In order for the impact of his words and the pieces to ring true, I had to see him as a human being — a man, a son, a brother, a husband, a lover, and a father who used his tools and his skills to shine light and influence positive change for all.”

Playwright Katori Hall said, “You cut me, and I’ll probably bleed barbeque sauce. I am Memphis through and through: home of the blues, FedEx, Elvis Presley, Rendezvous Barbeque and hoodoo.” Her family had a personal moment with this historic moment: Katori’s mother, nicknamed Camae (the same as the character she wrote for the play), lived a block from the Lorraine Hotel and was 15 years old in 1968. Her grandmother, fearing violence, did not let her daughter attend the speech.

Hall’s award-winning play Hoodoo Love premiered at the Cherry Lane Theatre in 2007. It was developed under Lynn Nottage as part of the theatre’s 2006 Mentor Project. Hoodoo Love received three AUDELCO nominations (Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, August Wilson Playwright Award). Her other plays include: Remembrance, Hurt Village, Saturday Night/Sunday Morning, On The Chitlin’ Circuit, and Freedom Train (Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival ten minute play national finalist).

Her work has been developed and presented at the American Repertory Theatre, Kennedy Center, Cherry Lane Theatre, Classical Theatre of Harlem, Schomburg Center, BRICLab, Women’s Project, World Financial Center, Lark Play Development Center, New Professional Theatre, The O’Neill, The Juilliard School, Stanford University, and Columbia University. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Lorraine Hansberry Playwriting Award; she has also been a Kennedy Center Playwriting Fellow.

2019 marks Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 90th birthday and the 36th Anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which was signed into law and made a federal holiday in 1983, and was first observed in 1986. February is African American History Month.

“The Mountaintop” performs until March 10 at the Garry Marshall Theatre, 4252 W. Riverside Drive, Burbank. Tickets are now on sale by visiting garrymarshalltheatre.org or by calling 818-955-8101.

Very, Very Independent Filmmakers – Where Did All the Passion Go?

So it’s February, the season of love. And while I give in yet again to the lure of Valentine’s Day, it started me thinking about passion in general. What are my passions? What are yours?

Tonight I went to a play about a pianist, Clara Shumann, a brilliant pianist and composer of the romantic era. The play was her addressing the audience and explaining how frustrated she was by her life. Too many children, too little opportunity to perform, always the wife of… She had such a passion for her art that she made it work somehow. Seven kids, mad husband, the constraints of the world as it was then for a women but she still composed and performed, and lived her life.

And it struck me, what are we if not our passions? What is our life if not the pursuit of what we must do. Sure there are livelihoods to be made, children to raise and bills to pay. These are all necessary and even enjoyable, well the kids are at least. But where does our passion for our art really sit in our daily lives? How easy it is to forget that we have anything but our day-to-day commitments and obligations? But what about our obligation to our soul, our sanity and our art?

So what can we do when we feel like it is all slipping away? Return to the source – watch the films that thrilled you and inspired you to become a filmmaker. Find the screenplay to your favorite film online. Most of them can be found one way or another, and read it…revel in it. Watch documentaries about filmmakers that you admire. There are some amazing ones out right now. I keep recommending the Spielberg one and there’s a great one about Brian De Palmer too.

It’s like falling in love and staying in love, you have to make a routine of reminding yourself what it is that gets you hot…in a cinematic sense that is.

Read about it, obsess about it, plan your time off around exploring the essence of film. We live in LA for Christ’s sake, we are surrounded by film museums and film festivals and specialized independent movie theatres.

Seek out like-minded film nerds and spend hours in Denny’s arguing over deleted scenes in obscure French films, or how insane Scorsese is or why Tarantino is any good at all, or how digital is so much better than film…or not. Find your tribe, populate your imagination with actors, go to plays looking for characters to write into your scripts, or actors to cast in your shorts. Find your lust and hold on tight like you’ll never let go.

If there is one thing I can guarantee it’s that time goes by fast and before you know it you will stop calling yourself a filmmaker because you aren’t making films or even planning to make films. There’s nothing sadder than someone who used to be something.

This Valentine’s Day give yourself the gift of finding your passion for yourself again. Believe that you are worthy of it and focus your world around what you really do. You are a filmmaker damn it, so act like one!!
