Shihori “Perfect Imperfection” Single Release

“Perfect Imperfection” is a beautiful song.

The song’s message is uplifting, hopeful and truly inspiring, a reminder to look after ourselves at the most fundamental level. Isn’t that something we all need so much right now?  Shihori’s voice is other worldly, open and vivid.  She sings from her soul, from her hard-won experience, from her own life full of obstacles, trials, and a deep understanding of the unceasing struggle to be seen and respected just as she is.

Conformity is something close to Shihori’s heart, as a person not like everyone else around her growing up in Japan, where being different is often considered undesirable and to be avoided at all costs.  Growing up with disabilities, both physical and neurological, Shihori has seen the world in a way that most of us never do. But as an artist, this uniqueness only drives her creativity, fuels her music and her writing, and produces a voice and an energy all her own.

Now based in New York, Shihori can embrace all the variations and the richness of life all around her and feel gloriously surrounded by “different.”  This single is a collaboration with the producer Dibs and a gorgeous mix of poetry, future bass beats, spiraling ambient classical piano, and layers upon layers of her heartbreaking vocals.  It’s a wonderful song, telling a story we need to hear right now more than ever.  To be strong and brave, and to revel in our differences, to embrace our uniqueness, to honor our selves and to celebrate our lives….just as we are.  Love this record!!!

Shihori will be donating all Bandcamp proceeds from the single to Joyful Heart Foundation (http://www.joyfulheartfoundation.org/), who help victims of sexual abuse, DV and child abuse.

It Can Be Dark in Netflix-Land

It’s August of a year that most of us would rather forget (and one that is still far from over) and in the absence of noteworthy film releases, your intrepid reviewer is still scouring the Web for some worthy recipients of your time.

If you have Netflix, there are a number of good limited run series, some in their second seasons, that might have escaped your attention. Many of them tread on the darker side (even the ‘comedy’ series), but all are fairly entertaining and worth a look.

To begin with, a few dark thrillers and police procedurals, (all of them British). Collateral starring Carey Mulligan, makes for a very intense four hours. As scripted by David Hare, Collateral has Mulligan’s perceptive, determined police inspector investigating the murder of a pizza delivery boy in South London. Although we soon discover who the killer is, what ensues is a complex exploration of politics, the military, sexism, immigration and British intelligence, and all measures of social unrest. To his credit, Hare and a capable cast directed by S.J. Clarkson manage to create an entertainment that is generally satisfying, especially since it provides no easy answers. Another procedural (now in its third season) is Marcella. When you locate it, you’ll see it described as “Nordic noir,” which seems pretty apt, as it concerns a police detective (Anna Friel – riveting) who is as good at her job as she is sorely dysfunctional in her private life, complete with blackouts that just may have some significance regarding an investigation (from the first season). If “Nordic conjures up bleak and cold (with a side of unforgiving), the first season of Marcella certainly fills the bill, but it is anchored by some fine performances (Friel and Sinead Cusack), and a mystery that is intriguing and plausibly developed.

Harlan Coben has developed a cottage industry in “page-turners,” usually containing a protagonist who is leading a life of some contentment, until he or she is forced to confront a sin from the past. Currently on Netflix there are three adaptations of Coben’s work that have been adapted by British filmmakers with (predominantly) British casts. The two that I viewed, Safe and The Stranger, are similar in that a revelation in the first episode leads the protagonists on some kind of desperate search and some unfortunate discoveries. Safe, starring Dexter’s  Michael C. Hall (with a mostly credible British accent) is perhaps the lesser of the two, as Hall’s intrepid surgeon widower (or widowed surgeon) frantically tries to find his teenage daughter, who has gone missing around the same time her boyfriend winds up floating dead in a pool (at a neighbor’s house party gone amok). His private investigations occasionally help and sometimes hinder the police investigation led by family friend/current lover Amanda Abbington (Sherlock, Mr. Selfridge). The plot machinations and the quality performances (including French actress Audrey Fleurot as a compromised teacher in an underdeveloped subplot) make this worth seeing, but The Stranger, the more recent entry is far more effective. It stars Richard Armitage as a lawyer helping retired police detective Stephen Rea hold on to his home despite some venal real estate developers (led by Anthony Head, as Armitage’s father) seeking to demolish it. But the case is not the protagonist’s main concern, not when a stranger (Hannah Jean-Kamen) appears “out of the blue” to tell Armitage some devastating information regarding his wife—who also winds up missing. Armitage’s quest to find his wife dovetails with the increasingly ubiquitous “stranger’s” attempts to wreak havoc on his and other people’s ordered existences. Armitage’s gripping performance is mainly what elevates this Stranger over Safe, but he is aided and abetted by several clever plot turns, and some fine supporting work from Stephen Rea, Anthony Head, Jennifer Saunders (as a bake shop owner embroiled in the stranger’s stratagems, and Sihoban Finneran as a police detective (and good friend of Saunders’) who finds that one of her investigations intersects with the one conducted by Armitage. The Stranger is a compulsively watchable mini-series that makes one look forward to future Coben adaptations.

In terms of the lighter side of Netflix, it can still be a little dark, especially with regard to two returning series, both of which, I’m happy to say, are even better than their first season. In the case of The Politician, I was pleasantly surprised. The first season was fitfully entertaining, as pampered and privileged Ben Platt’s Payton stops at nothing in the early stages of his quest to become President of the United Srates—in this case, beginning with president of the high school student body. Platt/Payton has problems, starting with his own abrasive personality and extending to various tangled relationships, including his “political rival River (his honorable, charismatic ex played by David Corenswet), River’s ex-girlfriend Astrid (Lucy Boynton), his adoptive mother and father (Gynneth Paltrow and Bob Balaban), and an “ill” classmate named Infinity (Zoey Deutsch) and her meddlesome mother (Jessica Lange, devouring the scenery). In spite of my misgivings over the first season (at times, I was just waiting for Ben Platt to show off his considerable singing talents—which he did in a few episodes), I tuned for the second—and was glad I did. Some of the regulars were given more to do (especially Platt’s Saving Evan Hansen castmate Laura Dreyfuss as Payton’s intelligent, dedicated campaign manager) but the major saving grace was the addition of Judith Light as Platt’s rival for the Senate and Bette Midler as Light’s longtime campaign manager. They are both formidable antagonists to the uncertain Payton (in writing and execution) and whenever Light and Midler are onscreen (either alone or in tandem) they provide endless jolts of energy and flawless comic timing, and even lend some much-needed credibility to the far-fetched proceedings.

Along with The Politician, Dead to Me, in the capable hands of Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini, is also enjoying a second season that is superior to the first—but here I was surprised because I couldn’t figure how they could top a stellar first season. However, the writers (led by Liz Feldman, who created the series), found a way, as Cardellini’s warm, well-intentioned but flighty Judy befriends Christina Applegate’s cynical, grieving widow Jen and forge a friendship that endures despite some seemingly insurmountable obstacles. (If you didn’t see the first season, I don’t want to spoil things.) I will say the second season is a little less dark and even funnier, and the writers are consistently ingenious in propelling the storyline forward. Besides the two leads, the supporting players, including James Marsden as Judy’s husband and Natalie Morales as a new friend for Judy, are uniformly excellent. I can hardly wait (though I may have to) for the third season of Dead to Me. Hopefully, you’ll catch up with it—and it will catch on with you.

Blunda “Pulling For You” EP Release

A local boy!! North Hollywood-based Andy Blunda releases his EP, recorded during our universal “downtime.”

Andy has been a working musician for years, touring and writing for others. Given a little time and space he decided to work on more of his own music, and I for one am very happy that he did!

This is a gorgeous collection of songs, melodic, cool, beautifully arranged, performed and sung.  They have space, character, purpose and are just sound so bloody good.  The kind of good that makes you leave a record on repeat….all day.  Maybe I am biased because he lives in my neighborhood, but I don’t think I’m that gullible. No, these songs are old school good, Elvis Costello good, Dave Edmonds good, Crowded House good.

I’m hoping that when we are all allowed out (oh please let that eventually happen), that Andy will play some local L.A. gigs because these songs need to be performed live in some little club.  Obviously cinematic, subtle and accidentally filmic, brilliant lyrics, soulful vocals, swaying, foot tapping arrangements.  I am so eager to hear more from him. When is the next EP?? Album please!!!

It’s a bit 80s…spiraling guitar, drums soft and upfront, vocals a bit in the back, except when they are not…laid back, cool.  Amazing production. There’s warmth and space and yet it’s all so perfectly tight and together.  This is staying on my rotation – summer sounds for a summer with almost nowhere to go.  This music lets me close my eyes and escaping down a country road somewhere to a secret beach, all blue skies and soft sand and salty waves.

Also I love his voice.  It’s real, soulful, textured and open hearted.  Totally unpretentious, Everything But The Girl-ish?  But the songs bely the complexity of this music, the keys, the aching bass, the mournful coolness. I feel like a teenager again!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this EP!!!!!!

I may be cyberstalking….

Favorite track? Hard to pick. Maybe “Carry On.”  But they are all absolutely brilliant.

Get this EP!!!

5 Reasons You Should Do Research on Your Online Date Before You Actually Meet

You can’t help it if someone on the other side of the internet is a bad person. That’s up to them and their choices, entirely. What you can control, however, is who you actually want to pursue a relationship with. This isn’t that difficult to do, especially with everything that you can access online these days. Most people leave a digital footprint – it’s a big help when you’ve cliqued with a date online and want to meet them in real life.

Dating is hard, we know. Maybe the phenomenon of online dating has made it more difficult, or maybe it’s made it easier. It all depends on your perspective. We’re all looking for companionship and the person on the other end of the digital line seems to tick all your boxes. They’re attractive, intelligent, have a sense of humor that you just find adorable, and just might be the one.

How do you know for sure before taking the plunge, putting yourself in a vulnerable position, and meeting them? You’ve got to do a bit of research. It comes as second nature for many of us nowadays. Here are 5 reasons you should do research on your online date before you actually meet.

1. Are They the Person in Their Photos?

You’ve heard of catfishing, right? Reality TV today is filled with shows about the phenomenon. Why? It happens more often than we’d like to think! Catfishing is when someone isn’t honest with you about who they really are online, or what their real intentions are, and you only find out later when meeting them in person or trusting them to the point where you might give up something valuable (online or not).

Doing a quick search of someone is more helpful than you think. With so many social media sites around, like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc., it’s easier than ever to find out if a person matches their photos. Search their name across these platforms and see what you come up with. Plug their name into Google, too! If there are discrepancies, you’d know to be suspicious and pry a little further. However, this can be easily confirmed by just having a video chat with the person. If they don’t want to, they’ve got something to hide and meeting them in person would definitely not be a safe thing to do.

2. They Might Have a Criminal Record

This could be someone’s worst nightmare – falling for someone online and meeting them in real life, only to find yourself in a dangerous, predatory situation with someone who’s a known criminal or sex offender. The internet is your friend, so use it wisely. Doing research on your potential date can unearth crucial information about the person that you might be into. A Google search could pull up any information that might suggest that your online date has a shady past. If nothing suspicious comes up and you still have your doubts, enter their name and any other details you might know about them into Nuwber. This will retrieve any publicly available information about your love interest and if they do have a criminal record of any kind, you’ll find out.

3. Detect Red Flags

We’ve all got deal breakers when it comes to dating and relationships. There are some things that you just won’t tolerate – it’s your life and what you’re comfortable with, so why should you?

Red flags are warning signs that may pop up if you do just a little digging into the person’s history. If you’re not comfortable with a potential partner having kids of their own already and they knew this about you beforehand, they could have lied to you to move ahead with the relationship. The truth is, some people already know your deal breakers but would still want to take advantage of you, for numerous reasons.

Other red flags could be lying about their occupation or financial stability. They might even be married! Checking up on their social media accounts, if you haven’t already, will allow you to check up on whether they’re telling the truth about very crucial aspects of their life and lifestyle. A good place to start would be Facebook and Instagram to see if they’ve got intimate or telling photos up with other people (double check the dates that these might have been posted, if they do show up). Look them up on LinkedIn to figure out if their profile is consistent with what they’ve been telling you.

Depending on their privacy settings, their social media profiles could also show you other aspects of their lifestyle. Check up on their tagged photos and see what they may be getting up to with their friends (you’ll learn what their friend group is like, too)

Do your research – if any red flags become apparent while you’re looking these things up, do what you need to do.

4. Figure Out Their Views on Important Matters

You haven’t met each other in real life yet, so you’re still getting to know each other. You might think you know a lot about your online date already, but it may only be a drop in an ocean. Have conversations about deeper topics, like religious and political views. Check out their Twitter and Facebook statuses, posts, or comments. This should give you a good idea of what you’re looking for. Some of these things may mean that a future relationship is impossible – only research will tell.

5. Make Meeting More Comfortable

The result of all of the above is reason, in itself, to do research on your online date before meeting! You may just be a worrier and having an all-clear will give you peace of mind until you meet them, especially if you’ve had a bad experience before. Knowing more about your date’s life can also make you more comfortable, helping the meeting to go a little more smoothly.

Sluka “Vampire’s Ball” Single Release

Sluka is a San Diego-based, four-piece groovy goth rock band formed by the singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist Christopher Sluka.  I reviewed their first album last year, a spectacular genre-busting opus.

This latest song, clearly the voice of the singer songwriter around which the band was created, Christopher, seems to reference the epic and shameless capitalism in our society.  It’s a musical criticism of the greed that drives our present chaos, riots, protest, racism and a pandemic wildly disproportionately effecting the most fragile of humans.

thumbnail 170109The video is beautiful.  Scenes shot at the protests in San Diego, rivetingly mixed with the band performing this theatrical, dramatic rock ballad.  The end effect of what might seem an odd pairing, documentary footage and an almost operatic, lusciously produced track somehow works…absolutely brilliantly in fact.

The essence of the song is  powerful and genuine, the musicianship superb.  We need artists to speak out, as much as we need everyone to speak out.  Mr Sulka has a true artist’s heart, full of the obvious madness of our world and this statement song is grimly honest yet somehow hopeful and heartrending.  In the tradition of Bowie and Peter Gabriel, a song of the times with a distinct opinion, crafted to inspire.  Loved it!  More please!!

How to Write an Excellent Application Essay for College

College application essays make or break you depending on the expectations of the admitting officers.

While some are keen on errors, others check for passion, abilities, and other attributes. Are you asking yourself how you can come up with an unforgettable application essay? You are in the right place because the tips below will help you create a great first impression.

Research and read through application guidelines

It is the first and most crucial part of coming up with your college essay because it will guide you through the writing process. Students tend to be anxious during this period and might end up leaving out important details. Reading, understanding, and Following the rules including word count and even font type shows that you are a good student. It is the first thing the admission officer will check for and failure to follow instructions might just be your downfall. Research is also crucial especially on the culture of the institutions. You want to make sure that your essay is on point and relates to what they are about.  Look for college essay examples and samples from cheap essay writing service to understand the structure fully. Finally, you should research your college application essay topic to set up a background for your writing process.

Create an excellent essay plan and stick to it

college

You are coming up with a writing plan because the essay is a vital part that will determine if you are accepted. If you do not plan then the essay will overwhelm you might end up stressed out. Initially, you should brainstorm and mind map before putting the plan down on paper. It will enable you to come up with an essay that has achieved a good college essay format, flow, structure, and coherence. Make sure to include everything on the plan so that nothing is left out. Some of the things you should include in the plan are as follows:

  • The best possible topic
  • Ideas on what to include in the introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Keywords \and phrases that will show the uniqueness
  • Organized points

Find inspiration, ask for feedback and consult your colleagues

The process should be part of your entire writing, especially when finding a great topic to write about. Reading through other inspirational essays especially scholarship application essays that have won people admissions and even scholarships is a good place to start. The essays will motivate you to tell a personal story in a particular way to give you success. Essays that have achieved success for others will also inspire you to finish yours. Asking for feedback from professionals will guarantee you a perfect essay. Sites such as Resumethatworks provide excellent resume writing services because they have experts who know the requirements admission officers consider. Consulting colleagues, alumni, and even professors will set you apart in terms of understanding what you are writing about and staying on point.

Come up with a compelling introduction and an intriguing conclusion

So many students are applying for college each year and the number of college application essays can be overwhelming for the admission office. Most officers use the introduction and conclusion to determine if to read through your essay or throw it out. A great introduction will keep them wired while an intriguing conclusion will leave them wanting more. While keeping the reader engaged the introduction should introduce all the necessary information with a relevant thesis statement. You should make sure to grab the reader’s attention, keep them engaged, and hooked. In your conclusion remember to remind the reader your main points which are why you should be accepted in this case. Making sure not to introduce new information or ideas you should summarize in a way you remain memorable to them. The introduction and conclusion are the trickiest to come up with in an essay and can determine your fate. That is why you should look at college application essay examples to see how they were started and concluded.

Proofread and Edit

The most vital part of writing your college application essay is polishing one. Here you want to make sure you come up with a perfect final draft. It the moment of reckoning and might make or break your application. Focus on narrowing down the essay by using fewer complicated terms, eliminating redundancy, grammatical errors, unimportant ideas, and anything that might distract the reader. You might not be objective enough when it comes to editing your work that is why we advise you to give it to someone else for a better edit. Asking for feedback from others is how to format a college application essay successfully.  Remember that this is a life-changing moment for both you and the people around you that is why you should get them involved. Finally read your essay aloud to make sure that it is perfect especially flow, structure, and coherence.

Use Authentic Voice and appropriate tone and compelling language

During this writing process, you are trying to showcase your personality that is why your voice should be as authentic as possible. Focus on making the essay your own and try to avoid letting others do the work for you. As stated earlier consult rather than giving the work away because it should be in your voice. An authentic essay gives you an upper hand and increases your chances of getting accepted. An appropriate tone will make your college essay stand out and show you are respectful. Admission officers will use your language to determine your proficiency in the English language. Use compelling language at the same time showing your knowledge. There is no perfect voice, tone, or language when writing about you that is why you should consider keeping it formal, specific, and appreciate to avoid looking vague or passive-aggressive.

Things you should keep in mind throughout the process

  • Start early because it will give you time to come up with the best idea, write edit or even change it
  • Consider writing about your experiences to achieve a personal tone because personality is everything in college applications
  • Keep in mind the purpose of the essay because it will motivate you to come up with the best
  • Be specific, unique, concise, yourself, honest by resisting the temptation of plagiarizing someone else story
  • Ask for college essay help from essay writing services. You can also pay for essays at EduJungles and wait as an expert to write a perfect one just for you.

Conclusively you should remember to remain positive and motivated through the application process. Your essay might get you through or not depending on the expectations of the admission officer. Stay motivated and continue with the search for a perfect institution for you despite the setbacks. Remember to research, follow instructions, plan, consult, write, and edit your college application essay to perfection.

Little Warrior “Flight Risk” Album Release

Little Warrior is a singer songwriter, originally from Pittsburgh, now settled in L.A.

Her songs drift melodically, all trip hop electronica with the lightest of touches.  Her sweet, fine vocals ever so slowly unfolding her stories of love, breakups, loneliness and searching, aching for her happy ending.

It’s a trip, this album. It’s gorgeously produced, full of purposeful subtleties.  It requires your attention, definitely not background music. The nuances and moods shift as the space between the music widens and widens until it’s barely there….quite a trick!

It harkens strongly to Portishead, but with a little less intensity.  A bit more Lana Del Rey then, but the vocals are lighter, more angelic.  There’s a distinct cinematic quality too. Some spoken word, some cleverly placed dialogue…very 90s.  The album has something to say, it’s a message, a quiet cry in the dark.  The sounds spin and turn around the voices, layered so intricately and breathlessly.  It deserved several listens in fact. I recommend you play it in the dark, in stillness.  There’s a lot of heartbreak, but the combination of both male and female perspective with the two totally opposing vocals make it all the more authentic.  I loved it, very “Matrix” and crisply European. My favorite track, “Over,” is compelling, catchy and beautifully true.

AN ROI PERSPECTIVE ON EARTHQUAKE INSURANCE

If you have equity in your home, you have a valuable asset that is worth protecting.  The question is how much is that protection worth?

In California, whether or not the inevitable earthquake hits, if you have equity in your home, earthquake insurance makes sense.

Let’s say you have paid off your home in California, meaning you have an asset worth approximately $750K.  That asset is likely appreciating over time, so at a conservative 2% annual appreciation, it gains $15,000 in value per year.

For Californians who have owned their homes for 30 years or so, they are living in this home effectively rent-free (property taxes for long-term owners may be $3,000-$4,000 per year).  Consider the loss of this home due to earthquake: that small annual property tax payment would be replaced by rent of 10x to 20x that amount.

In the highest risk earthquake zones, you can generally purchase insurance coverage for under $2,000 per year.  That $2,000 expenditure is about 3% of the property’s annual benefit, and less than 0.3% of its present value – and it protects the $750,000 of built up equity as well as the annual benefits it provides.

Even if that home “only” has $200,000-$300,000 of equity, earthquake insurance is still the smart move.

The only way a Californian loses all their hard work and equity in their largest asset is by not purchasing earthquake insurance.  While saving the modest cost of annual premiums, an owner is putting a very valuable asset at risk of total loss.

motus

Alex Jeffers, Chief Financial Officer, Motus Insurance Services

The likelihood of a major earthquake striking California in the coming decades is significant, bordering on inevitable.  According to U.S. Geological Survey (2015 UCERF3 Report), there is a 94% chance that an earthquake of at least 6.7 magnitude will occur in Southern California in the next 25 years, and a 95% chance that one strikes Northern California over the same timeframe.  If you focus on just the most developed metropolitan areas, the likelihood is still very high: the Los Angeles region has a 60% chance of a 6.7 or greater earthquake, and the Bay Area has a 72% chance.

An additional risk factor for homeowners is the outsized growth of condos as a percentage of total the housing stock, as condos and other multifamily residential structures are far more vulnerable to earthquake damage.  Over the last 25 years, the number of Californians living in multifamily housing has more than doubled, rising from 2.6 million units in 1994 to 5.4 million units today.

Daniel Wallis Orginal retouch 2 (1)
Dan Wallis, President, Motus Insurance Services

In 1994, the Northridge earthquake devastated the San Fernando Valley, causing roughly $20 billion in damage to residential structures alone. Detached homes fared much better than multifamily structures. Although multifamily dwellings accounted for only 22% of the area’s housing, they represented 84% of the damaged properties and nearly 72% of the “red-tagged” homes (homes that were too dangerous to inhabit).  With the increase in condos as a percentage of homes, the number of homeowners at risk has gone up as well.

But due to California insurance regulations, many owners haven’t been eligible to buy earthquake insurance — until now. After seeing the trouble that California condo associations and owners faced, Motus Insurance Services brought together a team of the state’s most respected earthquake insurers and condo insurance specialists to create the Motus Opt-in Master Earthquake Program.

This new direct-to-consumer earthquake insurance program allows all condo owners to fully protect their homes from earthquake damage while taking advantage of the same great rates available for master earthquake insurance policies. Motus is able to bring this solution to consumers because it worked with the California Department of Insurance to remove the barriers that prevented individual owners from buying into the same insurance coverage available to homeowners’ associations, which offers far more comprehensive coverage at significantly reduced rates relative to other individual options available.

“We identified an urgent need in the condo community and worked to design a new insurance product that allows all owners to access the quality coverage and lower prices of a master policy,” said Dan Wallis, CEO and founder of Motus. “Boards benefit too, as the Motus program allows them to fulfill their obligation to consider earthquake insurance. In fact, they are going a step further: They are offering tailored coverage to all owners and doing so without the burden a traditional master policy puts on an association budget.”

Many owners think the Federal Government will step in to provide assistance after a disaster.  To put it simply: the US Government will not step in to save the equity in your home.  Funds distributed through the Federal Emergency Management Administration (loans or grants) are only for health and safety.  After past earthquakes, FEMA has capped individual assistance at $5,000, however that figure has increased to $33,000 after recent flood and windstorm events.  Even at this higher level, government assistance will help an owner find alternative housing or take proactive steps to stop further damage, but it won’t rebuild a lost home, and in most cases, must be paid back over time.

Your personal insurance agent should always be your first stop to better understand your options for protecting your home.  However, if you live in an homeowners association (condo, townhouse, co-op, etc.) you will need to take the additional steps:

  • Find out if your association has a master earthquake policy from your manager or board (less than 10% of associations have a master earthquake policy)
  • If there is a master earthquake policy how much coverage is there and what it excludes
  • With this information, a unit owner can make an informed decision about what earthquake they will need to supplement the master earthquake policy or fully insurance themselves in the absence of a master earthquake policy.

133 Days of Shut Down – The Actors Workout Studio

It’s been 19 weeks, that’s 133 days since we closed the Actors Workout due to the shelter in place order of the Corona virus.  That was on March 17th.

I was confident and told my team, staff, classes, students, and production partners, that we should be back by June 1st, and worse case, July 1.  Well, we’re going into August and no opening in sight as of this writing.  We have moved our classes on line and that is going quite successfully. Our productions are still on hold, and we have started virtual programs, performances and gatherings. More on that next month. For now I want to talk about survival.

Much of the conversation I’ve had with actors over the past few months has been about surviving our sanity, deepening our artistry, and digging further into our artistic journeys.

I’ve been reading books I don’t usually read, exercising differently as I can’t go to the  gym, watching things I don’t usually watch, cooking things I don’t usually cook, fixing things I don’t usually fix, having conversations I don’t usually have, and talking to people I don’t usually talk with.  I guess as I look back, I am doing and finding new things in my life that without this situation, I might not have experienced.

I recently found a poem that spoke to me.  It’s getting a lot of viral sharing by people like Deepak Chopra, radio stations in Australia, Oprah Winfrey, on instagram, twitter, and Youtube. I can see why and would like to share it with my readers here in case you haven’t seen it. It touched me and I think expresses hope, compassion, growth, insight and possibility during this time. All of which we need.

And the People Stayed Home.

A poem by Kitty O’Meara.

And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed.  And, in the absence of people living ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.  And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed.

I hope you’re staying well, safe, and doing things that feed your soul so you continue your growth in your artistry. Till next time, take care.

Jennifer Biggs Walton and LA Curbside Entertainment – “La Femme Nikita” as a Classical Concert Musician

During this time of lockdown and while we are so isolated from each other and missing regular opportunities to see live theatre and performances, a heroine of the arts has thankfully created a respite and a refuge….LA Curbside Entertainment.

Jennifer Biggs Walton, owner of the renowned, Instrumental casting agnecy, the entertainment industry’s first stop for the very best of instrumental and classical performers, invented this wonderful new genre while glumly sitting at her kitchen table one morning during the lockdown….yearning to perform.  Jennifer and a select few of her best and bravest performers, set up in front yards and driveways across the city and perform for the neighborhood.  They play classical, rock, pop and just about anything you can think of to grateful and socially distanced LAists, their children, their pets and whoever is lucky enough to pass by.  Jennifer has been performing all her life. She began playing the violin and piano at age three, touring extensively throughout Europe, South America and Asia with her family, the John Biggs Consort, from ages 9-15. This ensemble performed music from the Renaissance, Baroque, classical and contemporary eras. It was comprised of her mother, Grammy Award-winning vocalist and arranger, Salli Terri, as well her father, the composer John Biggs, and her younger sister, Adrienne Biggs. She has continued the musical tradition as both of her sons play instruments, her eldest, Nicholas Walton, is an Army officer and plays the violin for enjoyment, and youngest son, Oliver Walton, is a successful musician and artist whose work has appeared in film and television.  Jennifer has managed to take her talent and skill as a musician and blend it successfully as a recording artist in numerous film, television, commercials and, of course, live concert performances in several symphonies as well as a talent agent for musicians.

We caught up with this “La Femme Nikita,” Jennifer, to find out the future of music in this time of the pandemic.

YR

What an amazing childhood that must have been! And that I have the honor of speaking with you, begs the question: who is Jennifer Biggs Walton and what conversation would we have on the playground?

JW

I’m an entrepreneur, philanthropist, …I like to play music, be outdoors and be with people, I play violin and piano. I grew up in a very natural setting.

YR

You grew up in a very, natural setting, what does that mean?

JW

We always had music playing, we always sang together and played instruments together in our spare time. So, we would sit around the table actually be singing four-part Madrigals. I thought that was normal, you know, I thought every kid went home and practiced, laughs.

YR

You toured with the John Biggs Family consort, you had your sister with you, you were about 13 when you stopped, what was that like?

JW

Here’s my joke about that, we’d come back after summer vacations to school and  when the teachers would go around the classroom and ask what you did over the summer. I would say I was on 16 different planes touring Brazil, Bolivia Argentina and Chile. I was glad I had my sister, my confidante, someone in my age group that I could share that experience with because otherwise it would just be weird.  It was extraordinary. As I go through life I’m realizing that how, how unique that really was! Like I almost never met anybody that had that kind of training, or worldly experience like that at such an early age and I am truly grateful for that.

YR

What is it explicitly that makes you successful at that (being a working musician)?

JW

I would say it’s all about timing, because when people reach out to me to book musicians, at www.instrumentalcasting.com (a talent agency Jennifer created to contract musicians for film, television, commercials and live concerts), I literally become La Femme Nikita because I drop what I’m doing and assemble my rifle and then I sharpshoot. I’m always taking the shot, I literally would be like gardening and a casting director calls and I become that ‘person’ or the talent manager for that casting director. I give 100% focus to that one job. I get a huge amount of satisfaction from completing a task.

YR

Tell me what you missed about not performing due to the pandemic.

JW

I was sitting in the kitchen, just staring at the wall, on May 14th,  this is two months into COVID…after the first few weeks of initial shock and a terrible depression that all entertainers faced and a myriad of other professions. I was stating to think ok, this is not going away anytime soon, like even years… I started to think what if I wanted to order some live entertainment? To show up on my front porch and sing me a little Christmas carol? And then I thought why can’t I?  So, I went through the steps bought the domain www.LACurbsideEntertainment.com where we will be performing live outdoors under a tent and all performances are Contactless, COVID-Compliant and Captivating! I sure am glad we did because we’ve had eight jobs every month since.

YR

Isn’t this what you do anyway? it’s just a different venue: it’s outside. It’s how its delivered You’re changing the cultural landscape of music.

JW

Thank you, we’re making it more accessible to people. Once people realized how much they miss live entertainment, until they cannot go to a bar to hear a band, or down to the beach to see live musicians, so that’s what I’m going for basically.

YR

Do you think this this the future landscape of (live) music?

JW

I do, I do think for the next year and year and a half. People have asked if you’re going to continue doing this? I said yes.

YR

You recently played Microsoft Theater Live, with Shahkar Bineshpajooh, Superstar Persian musician, poet, composer and singer an amazing event. How was that?

JW

Contracting a 100-piece orchestra and 70-member choir for Shahkar Bineshpajooh was the highlight of my career!

YR

Such diversity and you’ve played and recorded many television shows and movies, is there a particular experience that you’d like to share?

JW

The hardest score I ever played on was Mark Shaiman’s (composer) on “South Park: Thicker, Longer and Uncut, the Movie.” (laughs)

YR

Wow! Really?!

JW

(laughs)  And that was the hardest score I ever played in my life (gestures and sings the complex violin part) Duh-da-duh, te-duh, dah, teh, da-da-duh…(laughs) when your’e recording they call out cues and they have names for each cue between takes, so we all start snickering and we named one of them, “Finding the G Spot.” (laughs)

YR

When I asked you about the most fun you’ve had, you said recording, tell me about that?

JW

Recording, is my number one something to do as far as work because first of all the caliber of musicians is so high and you’re sitting in a room with people who just pretty much ‘kick a— on their instruments and have, you know, a really good work ethic…. You don’t even have to worry about who you’re working with or who your’e performing with because you know that’s not going to be an issue and usually in the recording studio sound and equipment is so good at such a high level so you don’t even really need to struggle, certainly not like playing outdoors where you have to worry if the bow is going to fly off the violin! (laughs)

YR

Jennifer, you’re at the top of your game!

You can find out more about Jennifer Biggs Walton at www.instrumentalcasting.com  and to arrange for one of Jennifer’s fabulous live concerts during this pandemic, you can go to www.LACurbsideEntertainment.com

A Dancer…

She dances with big-time singers and bands.

She choreographs for these bands and singers.

She is invited all over the world to teach master classes.

She creates a special summer dance training event that attracts dancers from all over the world.

She opens her own dance studio.

She creates dance companies to train the next generation of dancers who land TV jobs and go on tour around the world.

Covid19 hits.

She is forced to close her studio.

She is forced to pay rent on a space she is forced to close.

She has no dance class or training program income.

She has no tour income because the U.S. is banned from travel and all concerts are cancelled.

She has no master class income because the U.S. is banned from travel.

She has no income from her summer training event because her studio is closed and the U.S. is infested with COVID19 cases.

She is still waiting for EIDL.

She applied for PPP when they opened this last round and is still waiting.

She has applied to every small grant like a scavenger and not won any of them.

The only thing keeping her alive and the studio from going out of business is unemployment.

Unemployment is a fraction of what she normally makes.

Unemployment doesn’t cover her mortgage and rent on her studio.

She has a deferment on her mortgage so she can pay her dance studio some rent in case, by some miracle, she doesn’t go out of business.

She can’t “get back to work” because everything is closed.

She can’t “get back to work” because she has no job to go back to.

Her life has been ruined by COVID19.

This one dance studio fills apartment buildings and hotels, restaurants, bars, coffee houses, grocery stores, local transportation and other local businesses and services.

This one dance studio helps sustain our local economy filled with small businesses.

Do nothing and our economy collapses, one neighborhood at a time.

The least Congress can do for their inaction and for trivializing the severity of Covid19 is to extend the federal unemployment assistance.

If they do not, they are harming U.S. citizens’ right to survival.

If they do not, they are taking away U.S. citizens’ ability to be creative, innovative and artistic.

If they do not, they are harming U.S. small businesses that fuel our economy.

If they do not, they are taking away our American dream.

Don’t be an American dream killer.

Notes on NoHo Theater

***

As delighted as I was to see the recent showing of the fantastic stage show Hamilton, I was equally disappointed that it was not in person. I had tickets to the current production showing at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood when we all shut down. Not only were all the disappointments of this time making me a bit stir crazy, I have been anxiously waiting a long time to see this show. I guess I waited too long.

When a good friend told me that the original stage production with the creative and talented, Lin-Manuel Miranda will air on Disney+,  I was excited and apprehensive. How could I see this wonderful production on the screen when it was meant for a live and breathing audience? Television is great for certain stories and tall tales, but live theater is the epitome of energy for the theater patron. Accepting this new reality, I soon came to believe that it was one of the best decisions I have made in these last four months. Purchasing a subscription for the month would indeed be a lot less than my original tickets, so I took the dive to Disney + for a month.

Not wishing to repeat the obvious complements for “Hamilton”; its actors, staging, music, originality and numerous other accolades, I still fell under its spell. With this in mind, I turned to the often over looked NoHo Arts District theaters. Closed due to our collective nightmare of Covid19, I wondered how or if they will return. The Road Theater, The Actors Forum, the Group Rep and many, many more. Twenty-two in all and all not open. How sad and how heartbroken the owners, directors, producers and actors must be. Maybe, just maybe, an opportunity to showcase their talents could be seen virtually as Disney did with “Hamilton.” It could be an opportunity to reinvigorate the energy of these sadly idle places. Would virtual work and could it be done? I’m not sure but I wish theater owners, directors and actors would give it a shot.

The reality of this situation like many others is unfortunately out of our hands. When, how, or if any NoHo Arts District theaters will re-open is a guess. I hope it is soon. As an avid theater goer, it is not just for the artists, it is for us, the audience. Being in total or semi-total isolation for so long, we need you and miss you dearly. Yes, there is some comfort being at home. Watching in your ‘jammies’, or in your birthday suit with your choice of libations is fun, for a while. It isn’t all a disaster, but not the same feeling as being inside a live theater feeling the energy of the full production. Hopefully, we will all be there soon, in person, together. Until that moment returns a new way to experience this art would be welcomed.

In the meantime, take a look at the virtual shows from our NoHo theaters. Check back often as we add more shows.

Chaotic Food Is Good and Yummy

Meet the newest contributor to www.nohoartsdistrict.com – Bailey of Chaotic Food. If you’re a vegan, vegetarian or thinking about making the switch, check out some of Bailey’s easy and yummy vegan recipes.  Even if you’re not contemplating a switch, the dishes are delish!

Here’s one of our favorites – SIMPLE AND AMAZING TUNA MELT | PLANT BASED.

You were born in NoHo but what do you miss about NoHo living in England?

We moved away when I was 3, so I don’t have too many memories from living there (apart from throwing pennies off the balcony, I was young, I didn’t know any better); but I have had the pleasure of visiting last year and the year before. I think the energy and the feeling of home is a big one. I’ve always felt a bit off, a bit different from everyone in England. It’s hard to explain but when I’m there I just feel like I fit in. Like, some people judge you for eating a PB and J here, it’s mental. Also, the weather, I love the sun and heat and England is not where you go if you’re looking for it. The biggest thing I miss though are the drinks, damn man the selection of drinks you can get at 7-Eleven beats the biggest supermarket you can find here. I really miss my gallon of Arizona Iced Tea.

What made you become a vegan?

I’m a vegan more for ethics rather than planet conservation. Something about breeding cows, ripping their children away from them and stealing their milk just doesn’t sit right with me ;). But what pushed me to becoming vegan was my family. My mom had breast cancer and my brother told her to watch “What the Health” It highlighted the amount of hormones in food, amongst other things. So, she became vegan and felt healthier and didn’t have so many side effects with her medication. My dad, who was a vegetarian, also became vegan at the same time and my brother and sister in law a month later. It took me a year to make the change to plant-based food. My brother kept pushing me, but I said I’d probably do it when I went to University. I’m not sure why I did that, maybe it was to do with me wanting it to be my choice, or maybe I wanted to appreciate Twix bars before saying goodbye, I don’t know. But a month or so after moving away to Uni, I just did it. I just thought, “Ehh, why not”, ate the rest of my non-vegan food and off I went on my path of enlightenment. It was really easy to be honest. I think something ticked inside of me saying I’m tired of supporting an absolutely horrific industry. I love animals (like I don’t kill anything, even insects or wasps, I once spent 3 hours trying to get a wasp out of my room at 1 am because I didn’t want to kill it), and I don’t think you can claim yourself to be an animal lover whilst supporting their torture.

Chaotic Food Chocolate Chip Cookies

What are your top three vegan dishes?

Hmm, that’s a tough one. I’m a very mood-based person when it comes to food, so I can love a dish one second and detest it the next. Like Custard Creams, hate the smell of them 98% of the time, and the other 2% I’m stuffing my mouth full of them and borderline choking (I can’t eat them now anyways). My top 3 aren’t in any particular order but my first pick would be jalapeno and bacon stuffed cheeseburgers. God damn are they good. I use Naked Glory burgers and This Isn’t Bacon and just any old cheese (it doesn’t matter which because none of them are actually like cheese). It tastes sooo gooood, I’ll probably be making a video on them soon. Second would be these chocolate chip cookies I’ve recently come up with, I label them as UP (unconsciously picking), because when I tell myself to stop eating them, if I end up phasing-out I just waltz over and start picking at them again (I’ll have a video of me making them out this Friday!). And third would be this sandwich I haven’t made for about a year. Damn, it’s incredible. I make bagels and some vegan ricotta from scratch, add fake ham slices and red onion. It’s honestly insane. I’ve just reminded myself of them so I’ll be making them again soon.

What suggestions do you have for people who want to become a vegan?

The first point I have is that it is so much easier than you think it is. In every major supermarket, in every restaurant (pretty much), there will be choices for you, and probably a lot of them. The only thing that sucks are the meal deal options (this is probably only a UK problem anyways), no I do not want a bloody falafel wrap.

Secondly, I’d recommend watching some documentaries on it, I guarantee you it will either push you over the edge to becoming vegan, or make you feel proud of being a vegan, and the good you’re doing. “Game Changers” and “What the Health “are two good ones I’ve seen. My final point is a point raised by Ed The Vegan (really recommend his videos) from his Ted Talk; “A meal to us only lasts a couple of minutes, but that meal has cost an animal it’s entire life. We take their life for a moment that is fleeting, a meal that we forget about almost as soon as we have consumed it.”

Chaotic Food

What made you decide to create a cooking channel and why the name Chaotic Food – Plant Based Food?

My main push was my girlfriend. I love watching cooking shows on TV and on YouTube and have had a passion for cooking for over a decade. Over the last couple months she kept suggesting to me that I make a cooking show on YouTube, and I thought, sure, why not. But I didn’t just want to exist with other cooking channels, I wanted to add something. I never watch vegan cooking channels, ever. Why? They’re either boring, pretentious or super healthy. No one is funny, or silly or just enjoying themselves.

My favorite channels are ones where I feel like I’m friends with the host, where they’re just goofing off, having fun and making good food. And there is sadly a massive lack of vegan cooking shows that do this. My main love of food is the fact I get to share it with people, it’s a really special and unique thing. And I think that needs to be extended to the audience, I want my audience to feel like they’re in the kitchen joking around with me. Which is why it’s really important who films the videos as well. Luckily, my best friend, my girlfriend and I, all study film, so we know what we’re doing (kinda). But if I didn’t have them filming the videos, the vibe would be completely different. They allow me to be my best and funniest self.

In regard to the name, it has two reasons. Firstly, it’s a play on words “Chaotic Good,” which is what I strive to be as a person. A good person but a bit chaotic.

Secondly, it describes how I want the cooking show. I want it to be high energy, I want to have the bits where I forget something, or do something wrong, because that’s cooking. Hardly anyone can cook flawlessly every time, and no one gains anything by seeing you cut out your mistakes, because they’re the most important bit. People need to see how to fix common mistakes, because that’s only something you get from extensive googling, or practice. I think by editing out these bits, it can scare people off. It may make cooking seem a bit too daunting. But I think by seeing this tall ass guy, not knowing how to properly cut an onion, making mistakes, laughing with his best pals, and still ending up with insanely good food, shows you that cooking is far from a chore, and not something to be intimidated by.

I’d like to thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak (well write I guess) with you and hope people found it mildly entertaining/interesting. If you want to check out my YouTube channel, where we make new videos every Friday, go to https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCd6ijRzrkxqg3IkqwT7Rrpw.

Black Voices

***

Great things can happen when given the space and encouragement to create. The Whitefire Theatre has given artists this platform since 2012 with their annual Solofest. The Whitefire Team has created a new solo series, Black Voices, slated for September 12 – November 19. If you have a solo show, you can submit it for consideration for Black Voices 2020.

Requirements  |  Submission Form  |  Calendar

We chatted with Bryan Rasmussen of Whitefire Theatre to get more information on the Black Voices solo show series.

Live Streaming Whitefire Theatre United States

What made you decide to do the Black Voices series?

The Whitefire Theatre has always been very diverse working with many BIPOC artists in Los Angeles but with the recent events I felt compelled to take it a step further. We already host the second largest solo theatre festival in the United States but I wanted to reach out and bring even more Black artists into the fold. After some research amazingly I found that there are very few, if any, Black solo theatre festivals so hopefully this will be the first of many!

How has Covid19 affected SoloFest and your season?

We were near the end of our Solofest doing 80 shows in 90 days. With only about 10 more to go we had to close because of the Covid virus. But we had already been working on live streaming live theater for many years. We did our first live stream back in 2011 for the play Firehouse by Pedro Garcia that is about racial tensions in a Bronx firehouse and we live-streamed that but of course it had a whole lot more equipment, cable etc…and the cost was prohibitive. So over the years we kept developing more and more of it and finally with recent technology we were able to live-stream 40 of our Solofest shows this year. So we were ready to go with our platform immediately as soon as they were able to relax the stay at home mandate. I believe very strongly in this technology and that it gives us the chance to expose Solo Theatre to a world wide audience and so the quarantine just pushed this technology into the forefront. And because we have no idea when theatre audiences are coming back into to the theatre we are presenting solo shows exclusively for the next year!

Are you looking for particular shows?

We are looking for professional Solo theatre from Black artists. Juliette Jeffers is curating the festival and she’s a prominent black solo artist herself and is reaching out to the community.

What are the requirements and what advice can you give to folks interested in submitting their show?

I think it’s very important to of already performed their solo shows in front of a live audience because of the technology of the live stream it’s very challenging to switch formats. So it makes it a little bit less stressful if they’ve already done their shows. A small deposit is required to secure a date and the rest of the costs then come out of their box office.

Anything you’d like to highlight?

We believe that the solo theatre genre is now the purest form of storytelling in theatre. It deals with issues and subject matter that film and television have not quite been able to yet. It used to be more of a vanity type of showcase for actors but now it’s shifted into a much more important and powerful tool that is ideal for live streaming and camera.

I’ve always wanted to create a revenue stream to support Theatre and I think this could be it. Theatre has always been regarded differently than film and television because of the budget and pay rates. Being a solo artist myself I know the difficulties of mounting and producing a solo show. So when I got the Whitefire I wanted to create a safe harbor for solo artists to develop their work and present it. But I think with this we can possibly even the score and make it just as important of work for Actors to do and to get paid for! I also want to thank you guys at NoHo Arts District.com Samantha, Nancy and Lisa have all been extremely supportive of our theatre and we so appreciate that!

Watch Out for Coronavirus Scams

Fraudsters and scam artists are always looking for new ways to prey on  consumers.

Now they are using the same  tactics to take advantage of consumers’ heightened financial and health concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.  Federal, state,  and local law enforcement have begun issuing warnings on the surge of coronavirus scams and how consumers can protect themselves.  Here are some of the more prevalent coronavirus scams that consumers need to watch out for.

Schemes related to economic impact payments

The IRS recently issued a warning about various  schemes related to  economic impact payments that are being sent  to taxpayers under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.1 The IRS warns taxpayers to be aware of scammers who:

  • Use words such as “stimulus check” or “stimulus payment” instead of the official term, “economic impact payment”
  • Ask you to “sign up” for your economic impact payment check
  • Contact you by phone, email, text or social media for verification of personal and/or banking information to receive or speed up your economic impact payment

In most cases, the IRS will deposit the  economic impact payment directly into an account that taxpayers previously provided on their tax returns.  If taxpayers have  previously filed their taxes  but not provided direct-deposit information to the IRS, they will be able to provide their banking information online at  irs.gov/coronavirus.  If the IRS does not have a taxpayer’s direct-deposit information, a check will be mailed to the taxpayer’s address on file with the IRS. In addition, the IRS is reminding Social Security recipients who normally don’t file taxes that no additional action or information is needed on their part to receive the $1,200 economic payment — it will be sent to them automatically.

Fraudulent  treatments, vaccinations, and home test kits

The Federal Trade Commission is tracking scam artists who are attempting to sell fraudulent products that claim to treat, prevent, or diagnose COVID-19. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved any products designed specifically to treat or prevent COVID-19.

The FDA had warned consumers in March to be wary  of companies selling unauthorized coronavirus home testing kits.  On April 21, 2020, the FDA authorized the first coronavirus test kit for home use.  According to the FDA, the test kits will be available to consumers in most states, with a doctor’s order, in the coming weeks. You can visit fda.gov for more information.

Phishing scams

Scammers have begun using phishing scams related to the coronavirus pandemic in order to obtain personal and financial information.  Phishing scams usually involve unsolicited phone calls, emails, text messages, or fake websites that pose as legitimate organizations and try to convince you to provide personal or financial information. Once scam artists obtain this information, they use     it to commit identity or financial theft.    Be wary of  anyone claiming to be from an official organization, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or the World Health Organization,  or nongovernment websites  with domain names that include the words “coronavirus” or “COVID-19,” as they are likely to be malicious.

Charity fraud

Many charitable organizations are dedicated to helping those affected by COVID-19.  Scammers often pose as legitimate charitable organizations in order to     solicit donations from unsuspecting donors. Be wary of charities with names     that are similar to more familiar or nationally known organizations. Before     donating to a charity, make sure that it is legitimate and never donate cash, gift cards, or funds by wire transfer.  The IRS website has a tool     to assist you in checking out the status of a charitable organization at  irs.gov/charities-and-nonprofits.

Protecting yourself from scams

Fortunately,  there are some things you can do to protect yourself from scams, including those related to the coronavirus pandemic:

  • Don’t click on suspicious or unfamiliar links in emails, text messages, and instant messaging services.
  • Don’t answer a phone call if you don’t recognize the phone number — instead, let it go to voicemail and check later to verify the caller.
  • Never download email attachments unless you can verify that the sender is legitimate.
  • Keep device and security software up-to-date, maintain strong passwords, and use multi-factor authentication.
  • Never share personal or financial information via email, text message, or over the phone.
  • If you see a scam related to the coronavirus, be sure to report it to the FTC at gov/complaint.

Great Reasons to be a Surgeon

0

Being a surgeon is great in itself, but gaining certain skills can be invaluable.

Besides having the latest knowledge and techniques required in surgery, all great surgeons have a lot in common in their personalities that actually makes them great in other senses as well. If you are a medical student and intend to be a great surgeon, you can be so if you are blessed with the following excellent qualities. Have a close look at them and strive to develop the few skills you find yourself lacking in.

  1.  Manual dexterity

The more you are able to work with your hands skillfully, the better are the chances that you click as a successful surgeon in the near future. An expert surgeon can always handle the most critical, complicated, and crucial stages during an operation with impeccable hand-skills. A professional surgeon always works with the surgical equipment using the minute and controlled movements of their hands resulting from their superb hand-eye coordination. Develop a habit to practice to handle all sorts of daily activities with care and delicacy. It can help you greatly when you work as a surgeon in the operation room.

  1. Ability to handle the unexpected

Unexpected things or outcomes happen all the time in the operating room. Procedures often go astray and surgeons have to adjust on the fly. It is said that one of the hardest things in the realm of surgery is not having a predictable schedule. A great surgeon always handles the unexpected with cool and calm nerves. They instantly change course of action according to the situational demand. That’s why you must also have the ability to adapt at once to unfamiliar situations with flexible nerves if you want to be a great surgeon.

  1. Communicational skills

Having diagnosed the core issue and the surgical solution to cure it, a surgeon must be able to convey it to their patient properly and convince him/her with excellent communication skills. A surgeon must have the ability to elaborate on each and every aspect of the surgical treatment they are going to adopt. Suppose a person has a bunion problem with his foot which can only be cured through surgery. The surgeon concerned must tell their patient the importance of this sole solution and all the pre-and-post surgery precautions along with the bunion surgery cost in such a comprehensive way as to convince him then and there. Moreover, a great surgeon always remains polite to his juniors and the other paramedical staff while working inside or outside the operation room.

  1. Mental strength to lead a team

In an operation theatre, a surgeon is like a leader working with all of their team members belonging to different fields of surgery. As such, a surgeon must have the ability to lead them from the front and guide them to handle the whole activity successfully. Besides performing their surgical duties, they must also try their best to keep the morale of all the members high through their best motivational abilities. In case there raises an unpredictable stage and all eyes look at them for the quick remedy, the surgeon must be able to decide how to handle the whole issue successfully. They must behave in a way to ensure that their team members take courage and stamina when they look at them during this crisis situation.

With the above-mentioned traits in his personality, a surgeon can gain the repute of a renowned professional and feel proud of themselves the right way.

Common Foot Problems & How to Deal with Them

0

Various conditions of your feet tell a lot about your current health status. You must be able to pick them and treat your health accordingly.

Foot problems are serious matters, and individuals should treat them as such. If you’ve experienced foot pain or irregularities lately, then you shouldn’t ignore those issues. Here we have worked out what could be lurking behind your specific foot concerns. You must consult with your doctor or some podiatrist immediately if you find something familiar on the following list:

  1. Sudden baldness on your feet or toes

The hair on your feet or toes may cause pain during sandal season, but it is always a good sign to have some hair on your feet. Sudden baldness could indicate too little blood supply to sustain hair growth. It also could be a sign that your heart is not pumping blood with enough pressure to reach your feet. Hence, bald feet and toes could be the first sign of severe circulation issues.

  1. Constantly cold feet

Some people always have cold feet no matter what the weather is. The most common cause seems to be hypothyroidism. It may also cause hair loss, fatigue, unexplained weight gain, depression, etc. You must visit your doctor if you notice any such symptoms.

  1. Bunions

Sometimes, you may start feeling unbearable pain in your bunions a short while after wearing even a pair of comfortable shoes. You start blaming the shoes or their manufacturer, not knowing that this is not the case. Bunions result from a flawed foot structure and often become aggravated due to improper shoes. The first foot bone drives toward the rest of the toes and you see the bump that is causing you severe pain. The only way to cure this disorder is to undergo a minimally invasive bunion surgery by a competent surgeon.

  1. Undergoing foot cramping too often

This is a common issue for many people, irrespective of age and gender. It may occur for one of the three reasons, namely: poor blood circulation, nerve malfunction, and nutritional deficiency. Often, lack of intake of water and minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium can also lead to muscle cramping. So, upping your diet may also improve the condition of your foot cramping. However, you must see your doctor as soon as possible for such a problem.

  1. Stubborn sores

Sometimes, there rises a sore on your foot and heals itself within two to three days. This is quite normal, but if this does not remain the case and your sores on your feet start becoming stubborn, this is a red flag for diabetes or skin cancer. High and uncontrolled blood glucose level damages the nerve endings down to your feet and there may appear cuts, sores, scrapes, etc. on the feet as a result. Unfortunately, if one of these sores gets infected, it may call for amputation in case it gets worse. Hence, it is highly advisable to consult your doctor at the earliest if you find any non-healing sore on your feet.

Maximizing the Efficiency of Your Lab for Better Productivity

Enhancing the overall working approach of your lab will ensure quality, a large output, and more economical results.

Keeping in place the right process, resources and people management increases the scientific value of your lab and helps you ensure the well-being of your staff. Besides, improving your lab efficiency also helps to minimize wasted time and energy. We have worked out a four-step guideline to help you maximize the efficiency of your lab without resorting to shortcuts that are likely to reduce quality.

  1. Efficient human resources

The importance of keeping the right people in the right roles in all workplaces is plain for all to see. Hence, you must always hire experienced staff with high morale for your lab. They must be aware of the scope of their roles and should remain motivated to continue to learn and gain more experience to achieve the goals you have set for them. Another very important thing required here is to ensure the cohesiveness of the team as well as good communication among all the members. This collaboration will improve the overall efficiency of your lab and in turn its productivity as well.

  1. Well-optimized equipment

You can never enhance the efficiency of your lab with low quality or cheap equipment. This is because it not only limits the experimental quality and the subsequent productivity but also costs you more time, money, and energy in the long run. So, it will be very wise to invest in the best possible equipment available on the market like standard cell culture dishes, etc. You must also use all equipment as per the instructions of the manufacturer and keep all devices in a clean, fully working condition to get the maximum out of them. Also, do your best to place the optimized equipment in a position to occupy the minimum space and is easy to access, set up, and use. It will improve the experimental quality and productivity as well as limit waste.

  1. Excellent workspace organization

An excellent workspace organization must have the following salient features if it is to perform efficiently. Check them out here:

  • Everything like all unmovable equipment, frequently used tools, solutions, samples, storage, and waste must be stored properly.
  • Fixed equipment must be at a place where they are easily used as well as cleaned and maintained.
  • Chemical solutions and electronics often do not go in harmony with each other. So, these should be kept as far from each other as possible.
  • Pipettes, forceps, tweezers, and other frequently used utensils must always be kept on hand.
  • Glassware, falcon tubes, and other non-perishable items must be kept out of the way, but within easy reach, whenever needed.
  • Perishable items must be kept in a fridge at a location within your easy access.
  • All waste materials must be dealt with quite appropriately. There must be biohazard bags, sharps-bins, and toxic waste disposal systems in your laboratory.
  1.  Consult someone more experienced

Keeping in mind that the majority of the new experimental protocols are actually the derivations of the previous work, you must consult with someone who can guide you on how to tune the protocols to your specific experiment. Seeking advice or guidelines from leaders in your field will always prove fruitful for the well being of your lab. Sharing and exchanging information and experiences always bring about improvement to the contributors.

Why Do People Drive Dangerously?

As you likely know, not everyone on the road is a safe driver. Considering road safety is a responsibility that every driver must uphold, this is concerning because it puts you and anyone else near an unsafe driver in danger.

Despite this, many people drive unsafely for one reason or another. Unsafe driving can appear in many different ways, one of the most obvious behaviors including speeding.

While speeding may seem fun and harmless, it’s deadly and directly increases the chances of an accident. To put things into perspective, speeding accounts for one-third of fatalities in the U.S.

This shows that dangerous driving habits like speeding are significant and will result in serious consequences if not avoided. However, not everyone intentionally drives poorly.

Many different reasons cause people to drive dangerously. We’ll take a look at a few of the most common reasons below.

Misjudgment of Driving Skills

One of the most common reasons for dangerous driving is the misjudgment of driving skills.

This usually happens when someone assumes they are a better driver than their skills dictate. This overconfidence leads to the belief that they can drive their car more dangerously and get away with it.

The problem with overconfidence is dangerous drivers that speed and rapidly change lanes are often poor drivers. As a result, they fail to realize how much less control they have over their vehicle and how their survival is more about luck than anything else.

Dangerous drivers often don’t have the skills to control their car and the people around them aren’t expecting their reckless behavior, which directly leads to accidents.

Furthermore, many overconfident drivers assume that other drivers are bad at driving. While this may be true in some situations, the blanket assumption is false.

This can lead to situations where a dangerous driver knows their behavior is wrong but thinks it’s okay because they think they’re a better driver.

Putting this all together, the flawed perceptions that other drivers have about both their and other drivers’ driving abilities makes them dangerous.

Impatience

Impatience also causes drivers to behave dangerously.

Most impatient drivers are in a rush. Whether they’re running late or in danger of being late, they may drive dangerously as a result of their rush.

The most common example of this is speeding. Most speeders believe that going a few miles faster than the speed limit will get them to their destination faster.

While they may save a few minutes if they are lucky, realistically they won’t save much time at all. The timing of traffic lights and short distances many people travel results in minimal time savings.

That said, it makes you feel like you’re getting to your destination faster when you speed. This feeling is why many drivers choose to speed. Unfortunately, speeding is a factor in most car accidents because it results in a lack of control and reduced time to react.

Few drivers have an abundance of patience, particularly because of how aggravating driving can be. This impatience is highly dangerous when it causes drivers to make rash and rushed decisions that endanger others.

Boredom

Another factor leading to poor driving is boredom.

Once you’ve been driving for enough years, driving ceases to be exciting. Especially if you drive daily to commute to work, it can become routine and something that doesn’t require much thought.

In other words, you can become complacent due to driving the same route and performing the same maneuvers every day. Repetition is one of the best ways to make someone bored.

Even though driving requires intense focus, you can still get bored because you’ve already done it so many times before. Boredom has a powerful pull that makes you susceptible to distractions and losing focus.

Because of this, many drivers choose to space out or engage in distractions. The best example of this is smartphone use. Using your smartphone in any way while driving is highly dangerous because it diverts your attention from the road.

Between distracted driving and being generally disinterested, other drivers won’t be fully watching the road and this causes mistakes that are hazardous to those around them.

Another side to this is that dangerous driving can be thrilling to some people. Being behind the wheel of a car can feel like a video game and going fast can certainly get your heart racing.

Thrill-seekers are less common, but they do still affect many public roadways with their recklessness.

Boredom may seem harmless, but it directly leads to poor and dangerous driving due to distraction and loss of focus.

Stress

A final significant cause of dangerous driving involves stress.

Your state of mind while driving is incredibly important. It’s why you can’t drive while intoxicated or fatigued. Your driving skills are impaired and your judgment is poor.

Similarly, being stressed also makes for poor driving and dangerous behavior. When someone has a bad day, they may feel frustrated and take it out on the road.

A good example of this involves work frustrations. Making a significant mistake or not receiving a promotion can cause someone to get extremely upset.

When they drive home, they may choose to speed to get home faster. They may also cut off other drivers and experience road rage because of their underlying anger.

Many people neglect their mood and state of mind before driving. It’s easy to overlook because your focus is typically on getting to your destination and not about how you feel.

With this in mind, many other drivers are dangerous because of the daily stress they experience.

Closing Thoughts

Dangerous drivers are nuisances of the road. Their inconsiderate behavior is unpredictable and causes drastic reactions and accidents.

Unfortunately, people drive dangerously for many different reasons. Some of the most common causes include misjudging driving skills, impatience, boredom, and stress.

While it’s simple to be a dangerous driver, being a safe driver is what everyone should strive for. You can’t affect other drivers on the road, but you can avoid them and ensure that you drive safely!
