A local boy!! North Hollywood-based Andy Blunda releases his EP, recorded during our universal “downtime.”
Andy has been a working musician for years, touring and writing for others. Given a little time and space he decided to work on more of his own music, and I for one am very happy that he did!
This is a gorgeous collection of songs, melodic, cool, beautifully arranged, performed and sung. They have space, character, purpose and are just sound so bloody good. The kind of good that makes you leave a record on repeat….all day. Maybe I am biased because he lives in my neighborhood, but I don’t think I’m that gullible. No, these songs are old school good, Elvis Costello good, Dave Edmonds good, Crowded House good.
I’m hoping that when we are all allowed out (oh please let that eventually happen), that Andy will play some local L.A. gigs because these songs need to be performed live in some little club. Obviously cinematic, subtle and accidentally filmic, brilliant lyrics, soulful vocals, swaying, foot tapping arrangements. I am so eager to hear more from him. When is the next EP?? Album please!!!
It’s a bit 80s…spiraling guitar, drums soft and upfront, vocals a bit in the back, except when they are not…laid back, cool. Amazing production. There’s warmth and space and yet it’s all so perfectly tight and together. This is staying on my rotation – summer sounds for a summer with almost nowhere to go. This music lets me close my eyes and escaping down a country road somewhere to a secret beach, all blue skies and soft sand and salty waves.
Also I love his voice. It’s real, soulful, textured and open hearted. Totally unpretentious, Everything But The Girl-ish? But the songs bely the complexity of this music, the keys, the aching bass, the mournful coolness. I feel like a teenager again!! LOVE LOVE LOVE this EP!!!!!!
I may be cyberstalking….
Favorite track? Hard to pick. Maybe “Carry On.” But they are all absolutely brilliant.
