5 Therapeutic Potentials of CBD You Need to Know About

0

Cannabis is becoming more mainstream and legalized in more states and CBD, or cannabidiol is becoming a popular choice of medication for people suffering from anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and a list of other conditions. CBD has been shown to have many positive effects on the body with very little to no side effects, unlike pharmaceuticals. You also won’t experience any psychoactive effects which make this an ideal form of medication. It’s usually taken orally, but there are many different methods to consume CBD. You can opt for a device such as a vaporizer, a dab rig, or even a bong. If you’re on a budget, don’t worry, as online head shops like Smoke Cartel offer reasonably priced bongs and other devices, and you can buy the highest quality pieces without breaking the bank. However, before choosing a consumption method, you must learn and explore the many benefits of CBD as well as how it can improve your overall quality of life.

Here are five therapeutic potentials of CBD you need to know about:

Improved sleep

A staggering amount of people suffer from sleeping problems including insomnia and usually, they would swallow a sleeping pill to help induce sleep. This form of medication is not sustainable and easily creates a dependency and leaves people feeling drowsy and lethargic during their waking hours. CBD on the other hand is a holistic alternative and can be used to effectively improve sleep quality and quantity. Studies suggest that consuming CBD can help you fall asleep and stay asleep. This is because CBD releases cortisol which acts as a sedative. CBD is also known to induce calm and relaxation in the body which helps people fall asleep. The best way to consume CBD for improved sleep would be in the form of tinctures of edibles.

Managing anxiety and depression

Anxiety and depression are mental disorders that affect a large portion of people in society. Typically, these conditions are treated with pharmaceuticals such as antidepressants; however, these are known to cause harmful side effects. If you suffer from depression anxiety or depression, you should consider CBD as a treatment because CBD naturally calms and relaxes you which helps with depression. CBD also stimulates serotonin release and regulates mood which helps fight depression. Studies reveal that 300 mg of CBD is an effective dose to reduce anxiety significantly. Consider consuming CBD oil orally to treat these conditions.

Relief from pain

CBD is most commonly used to treat pain both bodily and neuropathic and can be used to target anything from mild to severe pain. The human body has a system called the endocannabinoid system which functions to regulate many things, pain being one of them. Studies show that when CBD is consumed, it affects endocannabinoid receptor activity which reduces pain and inflammation by also interacting with neurotransmitters. Studies also show that using CBD for pain relief is more effective when combined with THC, especially when relating to arthritis and multiple sclerosis. You can consume CBD in many ways including orally with edibles, sublingually with tinctures, or topically with lotions, creams, and sprays for more targeted pain relief.

Managing PTSD

PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder manifests as a result of someone’s inability to recover from a traumatic life event such as abuse, assault, war, natural disaster, or death of a loved one. The symptoms of this disorder include nightmares, heightened anxiety, paranoia, and depression to name a few. Usually, PTSD is treated with different types of psychotherapy and medications to manage the symptoms however, CBD is more effective and healthier. We have already discussed how CBD reduces symptoms of anxiety as well as improves sleep which are both symptoms of PTSD. Most of these symptoms are combated by CBD interacting with the endocannabinoid system. Edibles are a good way to consume CBD to treat PTSD.

Reduce frequency of seizures

It is suggested that CBD may help with seizures caused by epilepsy and this is done when CBD interacts and activates certain cells known as CB1 receptors. These cells are located in the nervous system in the brain and are responsible for memory. It is best to use CBD oil to treat seizures and this can be consumed orally by placing drops directly into your mouth or you can put the oil in edibles and consume it this way. Most people prefer using isolated CBD compounds to treat seizures.

If you are suffering from one of the above-mentioned conditions and are looking for a natural alternative to healing, you should try CBD. This compound has shown effectiveness in treating many health conditions with no negative side effects.

Can Garlic Be Deadly To Dogs?

Making your own dog food or adding healthy and natural ingredients to your dog’s kibble is a great way to boost their health and ensure they live a long and happy life. And if you’ve been experimenting with making dog food, you probably have a rough idea of what ingredients are good and what ingredients are bad.

Garlic is one of the ingredients that are bad for dogs. Well, at least that’s what most people say.

However, there are a fair amount of articles out there that also say that garlic can also have a couple of health benefits for your dog, especially if fed in proper amounts. So, which articles are telling the truth?

Well, the answer is pretty complicated. While there is some evidence that garlic has health benefits for dogs, numerous articles point out that garlic and other members of the allium family contain a toxic substance that can damage your dog’s red blood cells.

In this guide, we’ll be getting into the details of garlic and why it can be dangerous for your dog, and find out how dangerous it can be. By the end of our guide, you’ll know all the risks of feeding garlic to your dog and whether or not it can be fatal for your pet.

For a more definitive guide to why garlic is poisonous for dogs, check out this link: whatthepup.spotandtango.com/is-garlic-bad-for-dogs/

Why Is Garlic Bad for Dogs?

The main reason people say garlic is bad for dogs is a compound known as n-propyl disulfide. This is a substance that’s toxic for dogs because it can damage their red blood cells. The red blood cells are responsible for oxygenating the blood and removing carbon dioxide, so they are vital for proper bodily functions.

N-propyl disulfide is present in garlic and all other members of the allium family. So, this includes onions, shallots, chives, and a bunch of other herbs you might find in your kitchen.

Is Garlic Fatal For Dogs?

When dogs eat too much garlic they might experience garlic poisoning. This is a common reason why a dog is brought to the vet and it can seem very scary. If your dog eats too much garlic, it can start vomiting, feeling lethargic, experiencing diarrhea, among many other things.

So, can it be fatal? Most of the time, garlic poisoning is not fatal for dogs. In fact, fatal garlic poisoning is very rare so it isn’t something you need to worry about. However, in severe cases, your dog might develop hemolytic anemia, which is a serious condition that needs to be treated.

Are There Any Benefits To Feeding Your Dog Garlic?

While garlic is generally unsafe for dogs, there are some people who claim that in proper doses, it can actually offer some benefits. It’s a common story amongst dog owners that garlic can prevent fleas and ticks, but the studies on this haven’t given us anything conclusive just yet.

However, garlic could potentially have the same benefits for dogs as they do for humans. So, for example, garlic could potentially lower cholesterol levels which is crucial for your dog’s health, especially if they are overweight or obese.

With that in mind, you might want to start considering feeding small amounts of raw garlic to your dog. However, keep in mind that garlic can still be bad for your pet, especially if you give them the wrong type or the wrong dosage. So, if you’re considering feeding your dog garlic, always consult your vet first and follow their advice.

Are Some Dogs More Susceptible to Garlic Poisoning Than Others?

While there haven’t been any definitive studies on this, there are some people that report that Japanese dog breeds such as the Akita and Spitz are more susceptible to garlic poisoning. The Shiba Inu and Chin dogs are also known to be more sensitive to garlic poisoning, so make sure that if you have any of these dog breeds that they stay away from garlic as much as possible.

Conclusion: What Should I Do If My Dog Eats Garlic?

So, now that you know the risks of feeding garlic to your dog, what do you do if you catch your dog eating garlic in your kitchen?

Well, to start, you have to get the garlic away from them as much as possible. Make sure they stop eating it and keep the rest of the garlic well out of their reach. From there, you can start observing your dog. There’s a chance your dog might exhibit symptoms after eating garlic such as vomiting and lethargy.

If they start exhibiting symptoms, call your vet immediately as they will know what to do. Additionally, make sure to observe your dog for at least 24 hours, as it might take some time for the garlic poisoning to start showing.

AUDREY MARLYN SINGER

0

August 15, 1928 – October 30, 2022

“Audrey was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, actress, producer,
writer, singer, teacher, poet, and theatre owner. She was married to Meyer
(aka Mike) for 57 years until his passing in 2004. Audrey was loved by all
and leaves a legacy of humor, youth, joy, talent, and the passion for life to
all who knew her. Audrey was the matriarch of her family and is survived
by her three children Charles, Mitch, Karen and six beautiful
grandchildren.”

“Born in the Bronx to Betty and Charlie Kamens, Audrey started singing
and dancing at the age of six, and she joined her father’s act as a Vaudeville
entertainer. Ignited by this early passion for show business, Audrey studied
in Manhattan and quickly found her way to the Paramount Theater on
Broadway where she debuted in the musical “Crocodile Island,” and
continued her career appearing in theatre, film, and television.”

“Moving from east coast to west coast, she continued with a spectacular career as a
singer, actress, director, producer and promoter of the Performing Arts.” In 1975, along
with a group of eager actors, many of whom were from New York, founded Actors
Forum Theatre, a non-profit organization dedicated to the development of the Performing
Arts. Actors Forum Theatre Company is one of the oldest membership theatre companies
in L.A.

“Initially, the group of actors was looking to put up a production of “Dylan” and couldn’t
find an appropriate venue in which to produce it. Audrey and her husband Mike found
just the right space in Hollywood on Cahuenga Blvd. West, just across the street from the
Hanna Barberra Animation Studios. This space became Actors Forum Theatre’s home
providing opportunities for actors, directors, writers, producers, and theatre artists to
perform and work on their craft in a safe and nurturing environment.”

“In 1994, Audrey and Mike Singer purchased a building on Magnolia Blvd. in the NoHo
Theatre & Arts District that had once been a furniture store and converted it into a
theatre. Audrey and Mike made sure that their audiences would be comfortable in the
new space by adding central air and heat, as well as wheelchair access to the theatre.”

“Actors Forum Theatre has been honored many times over the years, with numerous
awards and excellent reviews under Audrey M. Singer’s artistic direction and keen eye.
Since its move to the NoHo Theatre & Arts District, Actors Forum Theatre has been
recognized for the breakout hit “BOX 27,” the Los Angeles premiere of a new play that
examined the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, looking at homosexuality in a
different light. Actors Forum Theatre also housed Fritz Coleman’s first solo outing,
“IT’S ME, DAD,” which played to sell-out audiences for over nine months.”

“In addition, the theatre was recognized and has received excellent reviews for several of
the productions such as “THE GREAT SEBASTIANS,” “THE BOYFRIEND,” the
astounding magic of Falkenstein and Willard in “FIREFLIES – – WIZARDS OF
MAGIC,” “A HATFUL OF RAIN,” Julie Sheppard’s “JUDY GARLAND – – A NIGHT
IN THE LIFE,” and Don Scribner’s solo show “TWO ROOMS IN THE VALLEY.”

Over the years, Actors Forum Theatre has thrived and contributed to the greater Los
Angeles theatre community. In 2005, Audrey was honored with the Women in Theatre
Red Carpet Award, an accomplishment that she was truly proud of.

“Audrey was a radical who believed in the power of the people. A fighter for progressive
principles and democratic values, she was always ready to encourage discussion, listen,
and engage as a citizen. Throughout her life, she warned against corporate greed and its
effects on society and the planet.”

“Audrey was charismatic, compassionate, witty, intelligent, and talented. She spent her
life creating art and mentoring other theatre artists.”

“Audrey Singer was a force to be reckoned with, described by many as an
icon of strength; she leads the way with joy.”

She will be missed.

Being the Ricardos; Don’t Look Up; Death to 2021; The Adventures of Super Bob Einstein

Being the Ricardos is perhaps the most purely enjoyable theatrical release (via Amazon) I’ve seen in a while.

The film shows the beloved showbiz power couple of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (aka TV’s Ricardos, for those (amazingly) not in the know as they navigate a particularly eventful filming week, including possible infidelity by husband Desi, finding ways to get Lucy’s pregnancy into the scripts, and revelations of Lucy’s past membership in the Communist party. (To viewers of a certain generation, including myself, these actors/characters are so familiar and beloved, that one can’t help but discuss them on a first name basis). The narrative also intersperses flashbacks to their courtship and pivotal moments (as in Lucy’s bid for serious movie stardom). The film compresses events (which is forgivable) but gets a few things plain wrong—as in the alleged rivalry between Lucy and “movie star” Judy Holliday in the 1940s—at a time when Holliday had barely made a name for herself on the nightclub circuit, let alone Hollywood.

However, the film gets so much right, namely the characterizations and relationships among the four actors central to the success of I Love Lucy: namely Lucille Ball (Nicole Kidman), Desi Arnaz (Javier Bardem), Vivian Vance (Nina Arianda, and William Frawley (J.K. Simmons). While one may quibble with the resemblance (and comic chops), Kidman gets across the essence of Lucille Ball. She convinces as the proud, confident, knowledgeable actress/comedienne; an all-business de-facto producer/director; and a loving spouse wounded by the prospect of her husband’s infidelity. Likewise, Bardem is superb as the equally confident, protective, and all-too-flawed Desi. And both J.K. Simmons and Nina Ariadna are perfection as Fred and Ethel (I mean, Vivian Vance and William Frawley). Frawley and Vance may have disliked each other in real life, but both Simmons and Arianda communicate both the actors’ sheer professionalism and a sense of compassion that one can only hope the actors possessed in real life. Ariadna’s scene with Kidman, in which Vivian questions Lucy as to whether Lucy was behind a sumptuous breakfast that was delivered (together with ulterior motives) is one highlight; another is Simmons’ Frawley quietly advising Lucy about Latin men—and manhood. If the film is a little long…well, they’re trying to cover a lot of ground. And for the most part, the filmmakers succeed.

Don't Look Up - Review NoHo Arts District
Netflix.com

Don’t Look Up was conceived before Covid became a public health (and political) hot topic and filmed during the pandemic (which sadly persists), but one could have sworn the filmmakers saw this threat coming.

(I believe the original metaphor had to with climate change and those who believe, and disbelieve.) In a nutshell, scientists Leonardo DiCaprio (appealingly rumpled) and Jennifer Lawrence stop an asteroid heading for Earth; naturally they try to make this knowledge known to the world via TV and the Presidency, and for about ten minutes they succeed—until political and business interests interfere (personified by President Meryl Streep, sycophantic and moronic son/adviser Jonah Hill, and multi-billionaire Mark Rylance). Of course, the world becomes split between those who believe in the asteroid’s potential and those who think there’ll be no harm done. There are some good moments, courtesy of stars DiCaprio, Lawrence and Streep (Hill is also convincingly obnoxious), some good supporting turns, notably Tyler Perry and Cate Blanchett as what seem to be the only gainfully employed news commentators. However, the satire is a little obvious and the film more than a bit padded, and after one hour and thirty minutes, you’ll wish for some sort of satisfactory resolution—whatever that happens to be.

death to 2021
Netflix.com

Death to 2021

If you’re looking for some genuine laughs, I want to direct you to a pair of documentaries that are both hilarious and informative. Death to 2021 (on Netflix) provides a witty, funny and perceptive recap to the signature events of 2021, beginning with the January 6 insurrection. Aided by “talking heads” including Hugh Grant’s pompous academic, Tracey Ullman’s conservative commentator, and Lucy Liu’s news correspondent, much of the humor is on-target and both funny and disturbing.

The other is HBOMax’s The Adventures of Super Bob Einstein, recounting the life and career of the late actor/comedian Bob Einstein, who first achieved fame as Officer Judy on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour and later gained a following as the super-confident (albeit hapless) daredevil Super Dave Osborne. Recently Einstein appeared (to good effect) as Larry David’s friendly nemesis Marty Funkhauser on Curb Your Enthusiasm. The numerous clips are riotous, and the commentators (including Steve Martin, Einstein’s brother Albert Brooks, David Letterman) are engaging and perceptive. These two films are well worth your time. Enjoy.

How to Build Brand Loyalty in 2022

0

Brand and customer loyalty are two of the most important concepts you can prioritize as a business owner or leader in 2022. Brand loyalty and customer loyalty are closely related to one another but are distinct concepts as well.

Despite the distinctions, both impact retention, and repurchase rates.

Customer loyalty relates primarily to consumers’ overall spending power. Customer loyalty is about what you offer in terms of your regular prices as well as deals. Basically, to put it in even simpler terms, customer loyalty is things you can do to keep people coming back to you for products and services.

If you have lower prices, this is a key tenant of customer loyalty.

Brand loyalty is more conceptual. It’s about how customers perceive your brand. A consumer will be loyal to a brand because of more than prices. They believe that you have a great reputation, or they believe what you offer is better than what they can get elsewhere.

When you have a customer loyal to your brand, they’re more likely to try your other products or services. They’ll also probably keep buying from you even if they have to pay a little more.

The following are specific things to know about building brand loyalty in 2022.

Make Your Brand Memorable

For people to be loyal to your brand, they have to recognize it and remember. They need to associate it with positive things. One way that you can make this happen is by building out your physical brand and making sure you’re always using it. For example, the term swag has many meanings, but consider investing in branded swag that you can give to your customers.

It’s simply putting your name front and center because without that, you’re not going to be able to develop that true loyalty to your brand.

You can also position yourself as a business leader and a presence in your local community. Maybe you participate in fundraisers, volunteer, or serve on a local board.

This is important even if your business is primarily online.

You want people not just to recognize your brand but to associate it with positive things, which you can cultivate through community involvement.

Always Deliver on Both Quality and Value

For brand loyalty, unlike simply focusing only on customer loyalty, you have to deliver a combination of quality and value consistently. If you promise something, you have to deliver. You need to make sure that you’re consistently focused on creating a great customer experience along the way.

Know what is most compelling to your customers and what they prioritize most, so you can focus on delivering these things. A satisfied customer isn’t going to feel the need to look elsewhere.

Be Responsive

Even when you’re always trying your best to deliver quality and value, and an impeccable overall experience, things are going to go wrong, and customers are going to be unhappy. It’s inevitable, and that’s when how you respond becomes important.

In general, be highly responsive. The longer you wait to respond to someone, particularly when they have a question or negative feedback, the more frustrated they’re going to get.

If a customer feels like you’re always going to be available and responsive, even if something happens that frustrates them, they’re still going to view your brand favorably overall.

Along with dealing with concerns or negative feedback, make sure people have the information they need to make a purchase as fast as possible. The longer it takes to get information or the more steps they have to take, the less likely people are to make a purchase or at least to make it with you.

Be a Creative Problem-Solver

Businesses and consumers are facing plenty of problems right now. If you want to set yourself apart during difficult times and create loyalty to your brand in the process, you need to think of yourself and your team as problem-solvers.

You aren’t saying you can eliminate problems, but you can think outside the box and find solutions to whatever they might be.

Put Customer Data and Analytics to Use

If you aren’t already gathering customer data and getting insight from it, then you are missing enormous opportunities. The only real way to connect with your customers on a long-term, loyalty-driven basis is to understand them.

Data and analytics help you do that.

You can drill down to the specifics and find out all the details about your customers, making sure you’re delivering in a way that will keep them loyal to you.

Stop Selling, Start Educating

First, consumers like the idea of brands that listen to them in general. For example, customers seem to like when brands on social media are responsive to them on those platforms because they’re monitoring conversations and taking feedback into account.

Along with that, rather than focusing all your efforts on selling to your audience, you want to think about how you can provide them information and value.

They’re more likely to become a long-term customer whenever you create value for someone. No one wants to hear a tired sales message.

Instead, this year, think about what your audience most needs or wants to know about and how you can deliver information and resources in a way that’s unique from everyone else out there.

You’re showing that you’re not just in it for the sale. You’re there to be a helpful, authoritative resource.

That’s important to modern consumers.

Finally, work on creating an emotional attachment between your brand and your customers. You can do this in different ways but start by building out a consistent mission statement and purpose. You want to let people know not just what you do but how and why. When you do this, you’re creating an image of your brand that goes beyond your words or even your products and services.

It’s something customers can value beyond making a purchase, and they feel more connected to you.

Ongoing Inclusion Initiatives In Hollywood

0

Currently, Hollywood’s entertainment industry offers several initiatives to foster inclusion. The first one to name is RespectAbility, a foundation dedicated entirely to tearing down stigmas and advancing opportunities for disabled people. Recently, they came up with an annual summer lab providing workshops, networking opportunities, and mentorship for emerging (and also mid-career) professionals with disabilities. As a result, some of them have gone to work for Paramount, Disney, and Netflix. Plus, the organization’s Hollywood Disability Inclusion Toolkit is a great source of information about terminology, etiquette, and the law. These last items are crucial for the North Hollywood theater scene in which etiquette needs to be followed by attendants and organizers to foster inclusion.

CCP Disruptors Fellowship & Ford and Mellon
Another great initiative is that of the Center for Cultural Power’s Disruptors Fellowship which aims to disrupt Hollywood’s persistent lack of diverse narratives by allowing unique, diverse voices to be represented on the big screens and theaters. This initiative not only focuses on disabled people but also on non-binary, trans, undocumented, and formerly undocumented migrants too.
Finally, the Ford and Mellon foundations’ Disability Futures is a $6 million program to provide unrestricted $50,000 grants to journalists and filmmakers with disabilities. According to recent news, the foundations will add another $5 million to stretch this initiative’s scope until 2025.
What About North Hollywood’s Live Theater Scene?
Going back to the first example, Danielle Perez, who is a stand-up comedian and actress, regular to North Hollywood’s stages, stated to the media recently that, as a nation-wide touring artist, she often finds problems with the bare minimum disabled people needs: appropriate facilities. In this vein, she speaks about ramps and access as a metaphor for invisibility and the empowerment of a minority.
Speaking of which, actress, dramaturg, and blogger Kate Langdorf, speaks about her adventures going to North Hollywood theaters after moving from Washington as a bittersweet experience. On one hand, she could access a virtually limitless catalog of amazing plays. On the other hand, very few theaters had the needed improvements to make them disabled-friendly, and thus, accessible for her.
Echoing cases like this, the American Theater Organization recently published a post by Alie B. Gorrie, a disabled actress, and disability inclusion consultant that states that most venues speak of “too costly and complicated” plans to turn their facilities into inclusive locations where every theater-lover in the world and disabled actor could enjoy that one-of-a-kind experience. She addresses this issue by saying that it can’t be thought of as an extra but needs to be woven into the fabric of the theater scene.
A great example of how this can be implemented by a theater venue is El Portal in North Hollywood. The facilities within this historic theater include not only disability-friendly accommodation for viewers, but also for actors and actresses. Indeed, it features disability-friendly showers and a lift that goes from the green area and the dressing rooms to the stage. Although there’s still a lot to be done, raising awareness is, for most consultants, the first step of a long road.
How Can Inclusion Initiatives Improve?
Although all of the above is celebrated as good news, there is a lot more to be done according to an open letter presented recently and signed by more than 80 Hollywood personalities. In the letter, the participants highlight the urgency of acting on the inclusion of disabilities such as different cerebral palsy types, blindness, and hearing impairment among others.
Among the numerous facts presented under the #DontDismissDis campaign, the fact that at the 2019 Oscars, 27 winners received the award for playing characters with a disability but only two of them were portrayed by disabled actors can be highlighted. In the light of these stats, what these industry professionals demand from Hollywood are fundamental changes rather than isolated initiatives. For example, some of these demands were as simple as access for actors with reduced mobility in studios and castings. These same principles can be applied to the aforementioned needs of the North Hollywood theater scene as well.
The world is rapidly changing toward a narrative that can include all voices. In this vein, Hollywood, the biggest entertainment industry on the planet, needs to take action in that direction. Although much is being done to support that effort, what professionals and aspirants demand is structural, fundamental changes rather than isolated initiatives.

Actors Workout Studio Zoom Acting Classes

Happy New Year!  As you may know, after 30 years we moved out of our NoHo Arts District location. Unfortunately, with Covid, it was not possible to operate our school and two theaters in the physical space. We’ve moved our acting classes to Zoom, and it has been an exceptional experience. Many have contacted me inquiring, so I made a short video with an update on the Actors Workout Studio Zoom acting classes.

They Crawl On Walls

“Add this special story to the library of All-Time Greatest Romances! Truly one of the best dramas and Christmas stories to come along in ages. When Leopold comes out and confesses to Samuel his secrets, the moment of dead silence that follows; this is written so well, the writer’s description of torment, that you’d swear you were freezing right along with them in the shabby apartment.  They Crawl On Walls is an All-American story that should be read by all junior high and high school level students. Let’s hope the Board of Education discovers Waide Riddle’s They Crawl On Walls.”  — Nancy Bianconi, NoHo Arts District, Los Angeles

Paperback is available at Village Well Books in Culver City, and Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.Audiobook narrated by Faris Monshi.

Shaham + Contreras

[NoHo Arts District, CA] –  Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Music Director Jaime Martín, presents Gil Shaham, “among the most inspired violinists of his generation” (The Guardian), on Dvořák’s dazzling Violin Concerto in A minor, colored with the folk music of the composer’s Czech roots, on Sunday, December 11, 2022, 7 pm, at Ambassador Auditorium in Pasadena. The Grammy-winning violinist made his LACO debut in 2021, appearing on one of the highly regarded “LACO Close Quarters” digital episodes, melding music and the visual arts.

The concert opens with the world premiere of Juan Pablo Contreras’ Lucha Libre!, a LACO Sound Investment commission that pays tribute to Mexican masked wrestling, the unique cultural phenomenon watched by the composer while growing up in Guadalajara. Subtitled Sinfonia Concertante for Chamber Orchestra, the piece, which LACO initially slated to premiere in March 2020 but was postponed due to the global pandemic, focuses on a “battle” among LACO’s master musicians, whose instruments represent Contreras’ favorites of the iconic Lucha Libre characters. Six featured Orchestra soloists will wear custom masks created by the San Diego-based artists renowned for producing them for wrestlers. Contreras, who served as LACO’s 2019-20 Sound Investment composer, won the 2023 Vilcek Foundation Prize for Creative Promise in Music, and received a Latin Grammy Best Arrangement nomination for the title track of his debut orchestral album, Mariachitlán, is “one of the most prominent young composers of Latin America” (Milenio). His music “masterfully portrays the Mexican identity” and is “colorfully orchestrated, emotionally intense and rhythmically vibrant” (El Informador). Sound Investment is a groundbreaking program LACO established in 2001 that engages audience members in developing new classical works.

Additionally, the program – the second and final installment of LACO’s celebration of Ligeti’s 100th birthday – features three other works that evoke the vibrant texture and diversity of folk music traditions: Ligeti’s Concert Românesc and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances for Winds, both influenced by Romanian folk music, and Kodály’s Dances of Galánta, reflecting the music of the composer’s childhood in Slovakia.

LACO recognizes the generous support of the Colburn Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Orchestra also receives public funding via grants from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. LACO gratefully acknowledges Hogan Lovells US LLP for generous pro bono support.

Musas Mexicanas paid homage to women who played important roles in Mexico, including artist and icon Frida Kahlo, 17th century poet Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, and La Malinche, the Aztec woman who translated for Hernán Cortés during the Spanish Conquest.

Headquartered in the heart of the country’s cultural capital, LACO has been proclaimed “America’s finest chamber orchestra” (Public Radio International), “LA’s most unintimidating chamber music experience” (Los Angeles magazine), “resplendent” (Los Angeles Times), and “one of the world’s great chamber orchestras”(KUSC Classical FM). The “digitally native” programs, created specifically for streaming and applauded as “musically and artistically compelling” (Los Angeles Times) have “redefined how classical music can be presented in the 21st century (Cultural Attaché). The audience is invited to the party.” Overseas, he has been praised as “a visionary conductor, discerning and meticulous” (Platea Magazine), and London’s The Telegraph said, “his infectious enjoyment of the music communicated to the orchestra and audience alike.” He has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Gävle Symphony Orchestra since 2013 and is the Artistic Advisor of the Santander Festival.  He was also a founding member of the Orquestra de Cadaqués, where he was Chief Conductor from 2012 to 2019.
