The Dawn of the Dance Challenge

It seems like there’s a new dance craze taking the world by storm almost every other day.

Madonna said it best “Music makes the people come together.” The world has found a way to connect through dance that is completely in thanks to the power of social media.

Growing up, there were definitely dances everyone knew like the bump, the snake, the bounce, the troop, the Humpty Dance, the freak, the wobble, the Alf and so on. We got most of the moves from music videos or something our parents taught us. Now you could spend days scrolling through different renditions and tutorials of one dance on various platforms. There’s no age limit or dance background needed, just someone to record. Youtube, Facebook and Instagram stream directly to millions everyday allowing “everyday people” to become a worldwide sensation within minutes.

You want to know what’s HOT?!? Then you’ve got to keep your ear to the streets.

Right now you see the Floss, the Shoot, the Shmoney Dance and most recently Drake KeKe #inmyfeelings and Ciara’s #LevelUp challenges.

Some of the most trending dances stem from an artist doing tantalizing choreography that’s fun to learn, a lyric in a song or just a simple 2 step everyone can catch. It’s not always a major production.

Making these types of videos allows people to express their love for dance and music on an international platform. They create catchy visuals and build their following while of course promoting the song and the artist. No matter the benefit, everyday people who want to share their style and flavor with the world upload their rendition for the world to see.

Before we were so well connected, there were a few dance trends that got us all jammin to the same 2 step no matter where we are. Here are a few of the dance crazes that paved the way.

15. Soulja Boy Tell Em: ‘Crank That’

In 2007, Soulja Boy had everyone cranking it on YouTube when the site was barely two years old. It’s a mix of bouncing back on your heels, cranking your wrists like you’re on a motorcycle, then lunge into a Superman pose. BAM! That’s the magic. It spawned the first major “millennial” dance craze.  Despite its popular appeal, the song and Soulja Boy’s first major label album were universally panned by critics. However, platinum-level sales show that listeners didn’t care.

14.  Silento: ‘Watch Me Whip (Whip/NaeNae)”

Silento started with a 15-second Instagram video turned into a viral hit and major recording contract. But it’s not just about whipping and nae-naeing on this song. There’s the Superman, the duff, the bop and the break your legs, all put together with instructions easier to follow.

13. Psy: “Gangnam Style”

The “Gangnam Style” wasn’t just a dance craze, it was a cultural phenomenon. December 21, 2012, Psy’s video became the first ever to surpass a billion views on YouTube with his horse-riding moves.

12.  Whigfield: “Saturday Night”

The key to dance craze success is to keep the routine as simple as possible. It’s a rule that made Whigfield’s “Saturday Night” one of the biggest hits across Europe in 1994. People were rolling their wrists and bouncing around to this for seven weeks when it was at No.1. In fact, “Saturday Night” is just like riding a bike: you may not hear it for years, but as soon as it comes on you find yourself doing the routine perfectly all the same.

11. Madonna: “Vogue”

Voguing was a popular dance phenomenon in the gay community long before Madonna came along, but the superstar’s 1990 hit thrust it into the mainstream. Urging listeners to move to the music, voguing is one of those skills that looks a lot easier than it actually is.

10. The Rocky Horror Show: “Time Warp”

The “Time Warp” is a parody of what it actually became. The Rocky Horror Show was poking fun at the idea of the dance-along genre with its step-by-step instructions and the fact that every cast member performing it in the musical was singing an outrageously high.

9. “Bye Bye Bye”

NSYNC released bye Bye Bye on January 11, 2000, as the lead single from their third studio album “No Strings Attached.” The video that followed gave us one of the most infamous movement lyric combos we’ve seen to date. Wave you hand and jump three times then ball up your fist and jump three times. That’s it but those 2 steps are still ingrained in every 90s kid’s body.

8. Chubby Checker: “The Twist”

One of the earliest dance crazes known, Chubby Checker took a song that charted at just No. 28 the year before, quite literally put a Twist on it, and saw it soar to the top of the chart in 1960. And 46 years on, “The Twist” is still a wedding/office/school disco mainstay, and in an instant, everyone on the dance floor is wiggling their feet like they’ve got pins and needles.

7.  Kid N Play

This culture classic was first seen in Kid N Play’s video “Do This My Way,” it’s also known as the “Funky Charleston,”  because it was influenced by the 1920s era dance The Charleston. Unlike the original Charleston, The Kid n’ Play Kickstep requires two participants instead of one. The Kid ‘n Play dance is a dance you have to do with somebody else,” Christopher “Kid” Reid says. “You can’t do the Kid ‘n Play with somebody you don’t know. The person will be like, ‘Yo, why are you kicking me? Like, I don’t even know you.’”

6. DJ Casper: “Cha Cha Slide”

There’s nothing better than a song that tells you what to do, when to do it, and how many times you should do it. And when it comes to DJ Casper’s ‘Cha Cha Slide’, there’s a very good reason for that: it started its life as a workout routine for a health club in America. You can’t, however, hold greatness down, and within a few years the ‘Cha Cha Slide’ was a global phenomenon. All together now: take it back now, y’all. One hop this time!

5. The Moonwalk

May 16, 1983, during his performance of “Billie Jean” Michael Jackson went Jesus Christ on us and looked like he was walking on water. There are many recorded instances of the moonwalk; similar steps are reported as far back as 1932. In 1985, Calloway said that the move was called “The Buzz” when he and others performed it in the 1930s. In 1944, Judy Garland and Margaret O’Brien featured something like the move in their performance of “Under the Bamboo Tree” though their performance lacks the illusion created by the genuine moonwalk. In the 1950s, Dick Van Dyke performed a similar variation of the moonwalk and camel walk in his comedy routine called “Mailing A Letter On A Windy Corner.”

But no one made it look as cool or have that type of global impact as the King of Pop.

4. The Electric Slide

Choreographer, pianist and Broadway performer Richard L. “Ric” Silver created the dance in 1976 from a demo of Marcia Griffiths & Bunny Wailer recording of “Electric Boogie”. There are several variations of the dance. The original choreography has 22 steps. The 18 step variation went viral in 1989 and for ten years was listed by Linedancer Magazine as the number one dance in the world.

3. Village People: “YMCA”

Quite possibly one of the most famous gay anthems with an equally iconic routine, ‘YMCA’s cheerleading gestures actually didn’t come about until after the song was a hit. The story goes that during rehearsals for an episode of Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in 1979, the audience picked up on this previously unused choreography and the band had no choice but to go with it.

2. Michael Jackson: ‘Thriller’

Before there was The Walking Dead, there was The Dancing Dead. Aside from truly iconic moments like The Moonwalk and ‘Smooth Criminal’ lean, Michael Jackson’s most famous routine came complete with horror show shenanigans and choreographed zombies. We also suspect that the insane popularity of the ‘Thriller’ routine is largely down to the fact it’s one of the few MJ moves the average dancer can actually do.

1. Los del Rio: ‘Macarena’

Heeeeey Macarena!!!  Macarena is a Spanish female name which basically translates to Mother of God, so it’s fitting that it’s also the mother of all dance crazes. It took three years for the phenomenon to really take off, but by the summer of 1996 the ‘Macarena’ was the most famous piece of choreography across the globe.

A few that didn’t make the list.

The Whitefire Theatre Presents “Outlaw”

“Outlaw” is written and directed by Richard La Plante, based on the book “Exile on Front Street; My Life as a Hell’s Angel” by George Christie.

There’s something very special about the way theatre can present a world we have never experienced ourselves.

With nothing standing between the stage and the audience, no screen, no CGI and no editing, a play is uniquely positioned for truth.  Biopic, narrative storytelling is at the heart of even the most seemingly fictional play, a playwright always brings themselves when they write.  But when the play is at its most raw, when one character is standing on stage telling their own story with no embellishments, no theatrics, no fear and no expectations, that’s when the pure magic happens.

“Outlaw” has all the elements of this most magical of arts.  Adapted from the best selling book “Exile on Front Street: My Life as a Hells Angel…and Beyond,” this version of George Christie’s life not only gives us the background of his 40 years in the infamous biker gang, it goes even further than the book and brings us up to date, chronicling the years of his life post gang, including his family and how he was able to thrive outside of a life that most of his contemporaries didn’t survive.

George Christie is quite the storyteller.

With stage presence, grace and quite a bit of charisma he lays out his story for us on stage, not shying away from the danger and the consequences of an existence firmly outside the law.  He vividly and eloquently spins the tale, from babe to present day with a boldly cinematic prose and a subtle poetic turn of phrase.  His intelligence is clear and unsurprising, no one who lived this long and this hard is a dummy. But what gave me pause was the complexity of his philosophy and his motivation as well as the men he rode beside for 40 years of his life.

It would be easy for those of us who have lived firmly on one side of the law to caricature and dismiss those who have not.  George Christie gives us a glimpse into a world and the men who populate it that is unabashedly full of flaws and pain and destruction and yet he somehow shows us a perspective and a truth that gives it all reason…without the obvious cliche of glamorizing it.

For almost two hours I sat and listened to his life, as he paced the stage and spun his history effortlessly before us.  What I came away with was an admiration for the man he is today and an understanding of the life he has unapologetically lead.  He has faced his own demons and regrets and he probably still does every day, we can see the struggles on his face, but he has truly and deeply lived his life and very few of us can be very sure of that same statement in our own lives.  This is a tale well worth the telling and for an audience, it is exceedingly well worth the seeing.

Bravo!  I highly recommend “Outlaw” at the Whitefire Theatre.  The run is fairly brief, so get a move on!

Performed by George Christie

The Gentle Ladies of NoHo…

We always say, “NoHo is only as great as its people.” Meet the Gentle Ladies, a group of talented young women in the NoHo Arts District who are all about dance and supporting the creative spirit.

What is Gentle Ladies?

The Gentle Ladies is an all-female collective made up of nine women. Our goal is to inspire creatives of all sorts to develop their artistic identity through dance education and connection with strong female role models. We just want to continue building the art community towards being uniquely themselves.

Why did you start it? Like how did the idea come about?

KiLeigh Williams started creating the idea two years ago when she was trying to submit as a dance teacher to some of the bigger studios in the valley. Due to a lack of “following”, it was really challenging for her to get into the mix of subs. She was also looking into the people who were teaching weekly, and at the time, men were taking up about 80% of the slots. KiLeigh had been teaching for years prior. She taught throughout the country at multiple studios, and worked as a tap instructor at Point Park University during the summers. The problem was she couldn’t get an “in” anywhere where she was living and training. So she reached out to her closest friends who were all trying to do the same thing, and next thing you know, the Collective was created. Sometimes you just have to create your own lane, and run with it!

What will you do at Secret Rose for the #NoHoBlockParty?

Once a month we host an Open Mic Night at Secret Rose, and it honestly is such a beautiful event. Artists of all sorts show up and share the stage with each other throughout the night. This event has connected so many creatives together, and now we are super thrilled to call many of them our close friends. For the #NoHoBlockParty, we will be hosting a showcase consisting of dance, stand up and live music featuring many of those we’ve met through the event. It will be a variety show you won’t want to miss!!!

Don’t miss the Gentle Ladies at the #NoHoBlockParty!

“What these women are doing is amazing. They are all super-talented.”- Movement Lifestyle

WHEN:

Saturday, August 11 at 5PM.

WHERE:

Secret Rose Theatre
11246 Magnolia Blvd. NoHo Arts District

How did you choose the GentleLadies? What are some unique things they bring to the collaboration?

All of the ladies at one point in time worked at Movement Lifestyle. Movement Lifestyle is a dance studio and creative space here in North Hollywood that has changed the dance industry 10 fold since it started back in 2009. Shaun and CJ Evaristo are the founders and geniuses behind this miraculus space.

KiLeigh was a Workstudy the year of 2015 and met all the women through the program. She had been training for a full year with most of them and after graduating the program, they all had the same goal in mind: Let’s share EVERYTHING we’ve learned with anyone we can.

Each women is multi-talented and unique! We all dance but our creative process and the styles we have worked to master are all different. The styles we teach for our intensive consist of : Hip-Hop & Grooves, Jazz Technique, Stage Choreography, Modern, Contact Improv, Tap, Heels, Yoga, Pilates, Strength & Conditioning and more. We like to dabble in it all!!! 🙂

What projects are you working on?

Right now our main focus is teaching and creating content as a collective. Since we each specialize in completely different things, we want to explore that through collaboration. We are also performing every chance we get and creating different events to bring the community together. Noho Block Party and the Movement Lifestyle Annual Workstudy Showcase are just two events we have on our plate for the month of August. We couldn’t be more excited!

Will you do the Night Out Series again?

Of course! TGL Night Out ensures we are constantly working on our skills as teachers. We love to share our work with the community.

What are your intensives and will you do more in NoHo?

Our intensives are diverse zones where our top priority is to provide a safe learning environment for our students. We take pride in creating fun yet efficient classes in the North Hollywood dance scene.

What advice do you have for dancers coming to NoHo/L.A.?

As a collective of nine completely different artists, our wide-range of stories and experience creates countless answers to this question. To keep it short and sweet, the advice we have for dancers coming to L.A. is to be true to yourself, be kind, be respectful, work hard and the rest will follow.

Adult Dance Camp! You’re Welcome.

It’s adult dance camp time at United by 8, October 5,6,7,8…pun totally intended.

WHY UNITED BY 8?

”Our worlds revolve around dance and we know the magic that dance brings to the spirit, to the soul, to the heart. With so many different dance classes and formats, we wanted to create an experience that united them. We created a weekend getaway not to just give an opportunity to grow as a dancer, but to step outside the daily grind, connect with like-minded people, and rediscover the inner kid again.”

We like their mantra, their cheer: “We are united, UNITED BY 8. Clearly undivided, UNITED BY 8. ‘Cause we are united, UNITED BY 8! 1 2 3 4…5 6 7 8!!”

United By 8 is pleased to announce the date and location of its adult dance camp for 2018. This year’s event will take place on October 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th in a brand new venue in the San Bernardino Mountains.

“We couldn’t be more excited about our new location,” says co-founder Tor Campbell. “The views are absolutely spectacular and it comes with the most amazing amenities! Come and join us – you’ll have the time of your life, guaranteed!”

United By 8 is renowned for its adult dance camp experiences. Participants take dance classes all day and dress up at night for fun themed parties. Other activities include hiking, archery, rock wall climbing, zip lining, and dessert making.

“It’s a place where you can let loose and be yourself,” adds Campbell. “And absolutely everyone is welcome. You’ll make new friends and create memories that will last you a lifetime!”

The upcoming event in the San Bernardino Mountains will be United By8’s 4th annual dance camp. The camp is rapidly gaining popularity as the word spreads and prior guests share their experiences:

“I was scared that I am too old and don’t dance well enough, but the great energy at camp took me past my fears immediately. The instructors were great, my cabin mates are now my friends, and my memories make me glow. THANK YOU.” ~ Susan S.

“Dance camp was the best adventure of my entire life. I’ve never been somewhere where every single person became my friend. I felt welcome everywhere I went and had the most fun I’ve had in years.” ~ Michael M.

“No expectations just fun, freedom to dance and be who I am, and be with others who don’t judge or compete.” ~ Deborah G.

This year’s new venue offers Wi-Fi throughout the camp, semi-private (4 person) rooms, and heated cabin floors, along with new instructors, dance formats, and camp activities.

Very, Very Independent Filmmaking – Power in Numbers

Last Sunday I made a film.

It’s a short film, shot in one location and with one cast member…plus a spider.

But even though it’s short and really about a rather warped relationship between a woman and a peeping arachnid, it’s still a film and, once edited, it’s a film everyone involved should be very very proud of.

It’s the first film I’ve shot since last October, which, trust me, is easy to do – to go months and months without shooting something, or writing something, or planning something.  In the end, the making the effort to set a time and a place and step up to the plate, so to speak, is everything…as they say.

This particular film was born from a film group I am a part of, Cinema Tribe Collective or CTC.

The group was created because of a basic and profound need to make films with people who felt inspired to do the same.  We are all equal and even though some may be more experienced in film than others, that is not always important.  Indeed, a little innocence can go a long way in film, or any other art form.  People are always in search of the latest newby with all their naiveté and fresh faced ardor. But I think sometimes knowing nothing can give you the nerve to lead with your heart.

This film was definitely from the heart.  One of the group, Susie, pitched an idea inspired by a terrifying encounter with a spider in her bathroom…it didn’t end well for the spider.  As a first film for our group it was perfect.  One location – Susie’s house, one actor – Susie,  one-day shoot.

Of course, as usual, things took much longer than planned, but then we did have a spider to wrangle and puppet.

Now we have a ton of footage to go through, or rather I do as I was volunteered to edit. But this is hardly the worst thing in the world for a filmmaker!  We all had a blast making our first film together and nothing went wrong and the food was good.  What more can we ask for in a shoot?

When you want to make a film, make a film.  Don’t delay, don’t make excuses, don’t feel like you aren’t ready or need just that one last element for everything to be perfect.  Nothing is ever perfect, and if you feel like you are ready then you are  probably just totally forgetting something.  The point is to do it anyway and it will all work out somehow.  Don’t get me wrong, you have to be prepared, you have to plan things and write things and buy things, but you don’t have to be a bloody expert in everything and really no one ever is that has done anything of any stature and meaning.

I have made a lot of films and I learn something…a lot usually…every single time I make another one.  It’s part of the fun actually.  This time I learned how to film a spider walking across the floor from the spiders perspective…POV.  Who knew that an iPhone, an enormous ‘joke’ spider, a couple of wood dowels and a very inventive ten year old would be a solution!

Just the other night I watched the Spielberg documentary again. I highly recommend it by the way.  It’s just fascinating listening to him talk about how he works.  Sure it’s an incredible story of his life and how as a kid he made Super 8 movies with his sisters and how he snuck on to the Universal lot and pretended he worked there etc., and how as a 20-year-old he was directing TV and being mentored by Sidney Sheinberg, president of Universal.  But what I found most inspiring about it was how he talked about the work.  How he shows up to the set, to this day, not knowing what he is going to do. How he walks through the scene with his DP and actors and just figures it out.  How he is always terrified that someone will figure out that he is really just faking it and how that place of fear kind of drives his art.

We can all relate to being afraid, but it’s the “doing it anyway” that sets artists apart from everyone else.

Last Sunday I made a film.  A short film with a group of people who are artists and it’s just the very beginning.

Find your own tribe, tell your own stories, make your own films…

Exceptional Minds NoHo Block Party via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

I have been a muralist my entire life. After twelve years as a lead artist for Walt Disney Imagineering, I began to create digital murals for Universal and Disney all around the world. However, eight years ago I shifted gears to built a non-profit, Exceptional Minds. It is a visual effects and animation school for talented young adults with Autism. As the Executive Director, I helped nine of our graduates get permanent jobs in local studios, including Marvel and Cartoon Network. Another 24 artist currently work in the in-house studios. The visual effect team has worked on projects like Star Wars: the Last Jedi and Marvel’s Black Panther. The animation team has completed projects for the Los Angeles Zoo, Sesame St. and the Special Olympics.

Muralism.com NoHo Block Party via www.nohoartsdistrict.com

We have created the Mural-ism organization to inspire a diverse community to work together in the beautification of North Hollywood specifically and Los Angeles in general. The program will give people with special needs the opportunity to learn from local artist to create paint by number murals that the entire community come out to paint.

During the 1985 Olympics Los Angeles was the city of a thousand murals. With the Olympics coming to Los Angeles in 2028, we have a lot to do to get ready. Thousands of walls in the city need to be reclaimed and beautified before the world is invited in for the great event. Join us in paining 100 murals before the Olympics.

Due to an eleven year moratorium, murals were actually banned in the city of LA. In 2011 we were commissioned by Paul Krekorian’s office to paint the first sanctioned mural in the San Fernando Valley since the ban. We brought together artists, special needs schools and the entire community to paint it. This last year the same group of artist, along with the local community, painted a mural at the north end of North Hollywood Park as part of a Boy Scout Eagle Project. Over the last eight weeks we worked with the NOHO neighborhood council and Council District 2 to paint a community mural on wood panels as part of Noho Summer Nights. Now we have an exciting opportunity to paint a whole new set of panels as part of the NoHo Block Party. We invite everyone to come to our booth, find the color you like and fill in the numbers that correspond to that color.

See you at the #NoHoBlockParty on Saturday, August 11 from 3-10PM

NoHo Teens Read!

Who says nobody reads? Our NoHo teens do! North Hollywood Library, a.k.a. NoHo Library, has their Teen Book Club starting August 7!

Well if you’re in the NoHo Arts Distict you’re a creative soul. Our North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Branch Library (a.k.a. NoHo Library) is no exception. They create programs for our neighborhood that are fun and encourage reading and library usage.   We asked NoHo Librarian Basya Samuels about the Teen Book Club and what they’re reading next. It’s quite perfect for the NoHo Arts District since we are a theatre district…20 in one-sqaure mile!

Make sure to follow our NoHo Library for all the fun (education is fun!) they have planned for the neighborhood!

What:

North Hollywood Library Teen Book Club Reads Backstagers vol 1 by James Tynion IV and Ryan Sygh.

James Tynion IV (Detective Comics, The Woods) teams up with artist Rian Sygh (Munchkin, Stolen Forest) for an incredibly earnest story that explores what it means to find a place to fit in when you’re kinda an outcast. When Jory transfers to an all-boys private high school, he’s taken in by the lowly stage crew known as the Backstagers. Hunter, Aziz, Sasha, and Beckett become his new best friends and introduce him to an entire magical world that lives beyond the curtain that the rest of the school doesn’t know about, filled with strange creatures, changing hallways, and a decades-old legend of a backstage crew that went missing and was never found.

“With heart and chutzpah to spare, [The Backstagers] soars as a sincere love letter to the unsung heroes of the theater world.” – Newsarama

* When:

08/07 at 3:30 PM for teens ages 11-18

* Where:

North Hollywood Public Library Meeting room

* Why:

Starting in the spring of 2017, the North Hollywood Library began a book club for teens, with a goal to highlight great graphic novels, as the book club grew we began to alternate between prose novels and graphic novels. Some months are themed, such as the graphic novel March By John Lewis for Black History Month, others are just to highlight unique reads such as The First Rule Of Punk by Celia C Perez. Each month we try to tie in a craft or a program themed to the book, to go with the theme of magic after reading The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag we watched the movie Labyrinth. This upcoming meeting we’ll be discussing Backstagers Vol 1 by James Tynion IV and Ryan Sygh, a comic about a group of teens and the magical world that exists behind the curtain of their school’s theater.

* How:

Copies of the book can be checked out from the North Hollywood Library, copies are held at the circulation desk, or you read it digitally on the Hoopla app for free with your Los Angeles Public Library card. Why we love our NoHo Library….

HISTORY OF THE ROAD THEATRE COMPANY

In July 1991 a group of dedicated theatre artists and administrators came together to form The Other Side of the Hill Productions, Inc. a.k.a. The Road Theatre Company.

A non-profit corporation that produces theatre under the Actors’ Equity Association 99-Seat Plan. The Road Theatre Company has enjoyed an amazing 25-year history, having been honored with:

The Road Theatre Company is committed to the most meaningful and dangerous of theatre missions – new work for the stage. Its accomplishment of artistic excellence combined with outstanding production value prompted the L.A. Weekly in 2010 to proclaim The Road Theatre Company “One of the best theatres of the Decade” and the NoHo News to describe the company as “one of the finest venues for the newest and best American dramas.” The Road’s commitment to producing and developing new work has led to numerous plays being published and developed into film projects, including:

  • “West of Redemption”
  • “The Chisholm Trail Went Through Here”
  • “Vig”
  • “My Last Confession”
  • “In the Name of the People”
  • “Visas and Virtue” (winner of the 1998 Academy Award for Best Live Action Short)

The Road Theatre is committed to community service and educational outreach and for 20 years has been designated the resident company of the Historic Lankershim Arts Center by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. LAC provides over 60 hours of arts programming per week at little or no cost to the community, including programs dedicated to visual art, dance, writing, music and live theatre. Located in the heart of the NoHo Arts District, the company has provided numerous outreach programs forging strong links to the community.

In 2009, the company was selected by META Corporation to serve as resident theatre company of a new state-of-the-art 76-seat venue, “The Road on Magnolia,” located within the NoHo Senior Arts Colony. Road company members volunteer as teachers and work with residents who wish to participate in productions. Meanwhile, the theatre serves as a second stage for The Road, allowing it to serve a wider audience.

The Multicoloured Affair Presents “West Bollywood”

Written by Aruna Harjani , directed by Kiff Scholl, Ppoduced by Murray Kalis &andDonna Lane

“West Bollywood” is a play with music and dance and family drama and passion and lots of magical realism….it’s very, very Indian.

W B 0219 copy

The playwright Aruna Harjani is based in Jakarta.  Living and working for years as a journalist and film and TV producer she has already written several very successful plays all produced in Jakarta, but “West Bollywood” is her first foray into the U.S. pallet.  Since the subject of the play is gay marriage, and interracial at that, it became clear to Aruna that something so potentially volatile could not be staged in her home country, so she headed here, and the results are something unique, moving and highly entertaining.

The story revolves around a gay Indian man, Pratap, living with his traditional Indian family who falls in love, then proposes to his white boyfriend.  While he has always been out to his traditional Indian family and they are supportive of that, they are pretty shocked when he brings Daniel home, in all his delightful, sweet Caucasian glory.

And so the chaos of Daniel becoming a good Indian ‘wife’ ensues and as he struggles with it all himself, he obliterates the stuffy, old-school Indian structure of the family, with the grandmother as an iron-fisted matriarch and making everyone’s life as miserable as her own.

All this is done with wonderful characters, fun, fluid staging and heavenly Bollywood dance sequences leading us from one scene to the next.  Daniel’s family is also part of the action, both his parents and his sister – who has her own crazy dynamic with Pratap.  The drama doesn’t comes from where you might expect though, not the same-sex marriage or the turmoil in Pratap’s home, but rather comically and more traditionally from the usual hiccups in relationships, not enough time together, the stress of a new life, adjusting to each other’s families, etc. It’s an interesting twist on what could have been just a play about a gay marriage between an Indian man and a white American man.  Instead, it becomes far more complex and more human.

W B 0698 copy

All the performances are flawless.  The characters are written, large and colorful and unapologetically bold, so it would be easy for an actor to simply overact. But no one does, they are inspired by the hilarity of the writing and supported by the kind of direction that allows them to be fearless.  It makes for an excellent show.  Funny, insightful and compelling and a fascinating glimpse into the world of the traditional Indian family life, even as the story drags them all kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

I thoroughly enjoyed “West Bollywood” and I anticipate another hit show for its rather clever writer, Aruna Harjani.

It’s a hopeful play that lives in a world where same-sex marriage is considered a natural evolution for humans rather than something else to fight about.  Bravo!

The Dark Side of “Pinocchio”…

What do we do best in North Hollywood? THEATRE! Don’t miss Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities’ reimagining of “Pinocchio” at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre August 5 – 28.

Well NoHo is a theatre neighborhood, with 20 in just one-square mile. We do a bunch of fun, new works too. A lot of collaborations happen in the NoHo Arts District because, well, the more creative minds the merrier. We especially like to see collaborations with our theatres and theatre companies.  Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities has partnered with our own Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre to do a variation on the Italian classic “Pinocchio.” But this isn’t your standard variation when a group of Italian actors and Zombie Joe’s is involved.

“Longing Pinocchio” is an authentic, all-Italian cast that brings to life their outlandish and dark adaptation of the classic “Pinocchio” story. While mourning Geppetto The Woodcarver at his funeral reception, we discover that every bizarre character from Collodi’s world-renown fairy tale is present – all except for his beloved puppet! Where is Pinocchio? Was the wooden boy ever real, or just a figment of a lonely man’s imagination at the twilight of his life? “Longing Pinocchio” features Valeria lacampo, Veronica Nolte and Eric Paterniani and is produced by Zombie Joe. It’s appropriate for ages 13 and up.

Who wrote the play “Longing Pinocchio?”

Hello, my name is Eric Paterniani and I wrote the play “Longing Pinocchio,” a new adaptation of the classic story by Carlo Collodi, world famous especially thanks to its Disney version.

What prompted you to create the play?

Having discussed for long with my partner Veronica Nolte the production of an original play that represented us, Italian actors, to a “foreign audience” we were really motivated by the arrival to the US of our colleague Valeria Iacampo, who graduated with us from Rome Theatre Academy “Sofia Amendolea.” Having survived a few years of almost extreme physical theatre training we decided to challenge ourselves with a world full of talking animals and marionettes, like the one of Pinocchio.

Why do you think “Pinocchio” is such a timeless classic?

Although it is a fairy tale (see a literal fairy with turquoise hair) “Pinocchio” can always be read with contemporary eyes. Everyday we are surrounded by people that make us challenge our own judgment, letting us confuse right and wrong. The wooden puppet is also an “alien,” someone different from everybody else that just wants to be a “real boy” and find a place in a world that will accept him for what he is and, as you can notice from our company name, it is a subject that we have at heart.

Don’t miss Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities’ reimagining of “Pinocchio” at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre August 5 – 28 with free performances at the #NoHoBlockParty August 11.

How did the collaboration between Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group and Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities come about?

Our mission is to bring to the US new exciting and original plays from different countries with a sort of edge that borderlines physical and experimental theatre. Being Zombie Joe’s a staple in non-traditional and avant-garde theatre not only in North Hollywood but on the West Coast, we had our perfect candidate location for the debut of “Longing, Pinocchio.” We are so proud to see our play produced along many other exciting plays that wow L.A. audiences all year long.

Is there something you’d like to add?

Yes, enough about Pinocchio! Our story is really about his “babbo” Geppetto, a symbol of unconditional love towards a child, no matter how naughty and disappointing he could be.

Sadly, our show is set during the woodcarver’s funeral reception and we just have to discover more about him only from the questionable testimonies of the attendees. Without giving away too much about the show we really want to dedicate this piece to all the parents that live far away from their children, which in this case are us.

Don’t miss Aliens With Extraordinary Abilities’ reimagining of “Pinocchio” at Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre August 5 – 28 with free performances at the #NoHoBlockParty August 11.

Are you sheltering your dog?

I was recently reading an article in psychology today on over-parenting.

That can be a hot-button issue in and of itself but stay with me here.  The woman used several examples of kids being sheltered and things done for them, resulting in them being resentful or spoiled to the point they cannot take care of themselves or cope with the most basic of challenges in life.  You are probably wondering what this has to do with dogs…quite a bit actually.

As a dog trainer and educator, I am seeing this trend in dogs more and more.  Owners with good intentions want their dog to just be ‘happy’.  As a result, anything that makes their dog uncomfortable, seemingly sad or stressed is avoided as much as possible.

Just to give you an idea, here are some examples:

  • Not crating a dog that destroys things in the home because they whine.
  • Not trimming a dog’s nails because they become fearful and growl.
  • Not walking your dog because they are fearful of the leash or leash pressure.
  • Not asking a dog to get off the furniture and respect their space or they will growl and snap.
  • Adding people food to your dog’s food because otherwise, they won’t eat their meal.
  • The list goes on…

Now just a disclaimer, we absolutely come across owners who won’t walk their dog anymore because of their bad behavior, or can’t have people over because of their bad behavior, but they want to resolve it, they just don’t know how.  That is not what I’m talking about.  I am referring to the situations you might avoid with your dog because you don’t want your dog to be unhappy or stressed, and that is what I address below.   If you feel that could be you, hopefully, this might help you seek additional advice on how to work with your dog.

“When we assume our children need more than they do, we are undermining their abilities and hurting their confidence.”  -psychology today

This is a common pattern we see with dogs as well.  It could be something simple, like when a dog barks to demand attention, playtime or a treat and you give in to their ‘needs’.  You wouldn’t think that it could affect their confidence in other situations where they might be unsure, but it does.  If a dog feels in control for much of the day and then is challenged by something, like a scary truck or dog barking, they don’t feel like you could possibly be in charge of a scary situation and they will react accordingly.  That could be by being nervous and fearful or reactive and bark at what they do not like.  That often makes owners avoid those situations as much as possible instead of work through them.  So what that scenario looks like for the dog is they remain feeling a certain way in stressful situations and they never get to work through that stress and build confidence to overcome it and develop better-coping skills.  Dogs will often notice when owners avoid those situations and the insecurity becomes more deeply rooted, all the while they are controlling their environment at home and getting what they want.  One is greatly connected to the other.  You can’t influence your dog’s emotions or help them work through anything if they are able to control situations that seem harmless in the home.

Another more obvious, but very common example is when dogs are held or pet (comforted) when they are scared instead of shown how to work through that fear.   It’s common for us to think that they need it and we might see it help in the moment, but we are crippling their confidence or potential to gain confidence in those moments of angst.  That is when dogs often become so reliable on our interaction with them that they will exhibit those fears more and more often in order to get that attention.  It shows them they need more human interaction than they actually do so they will become heavily dependent on it, needy and can develop severe anxieties in other situations because of it.

When we actively avoid stress it actually creates additional stress.  In dog training, we call it a snowball effect and it’s interesting that it happens similarly in people.  As people, we want to manage stress and teach our kids to manage stress rather than avoid it due of a host of issues it causes if we do not learn those coping skills.  This is no different with dogs.

Dogs need to be taught basic skills for how to deal with life.  How to do that is another series of several blogs, haha, but knowing the importance of the time it takes to teach your dog how to fit into your life is very valuable.  Don’t run from things that stress your dog out.  Work with your dog with multiple techniques to overcome these difficulties.  Every time your dog doesn’t want to do something or is stressed out, ask yourself how you might help your dog overcome this challenge or improve upon how he feels about a stressful situation.  That is what really grows and bonds a relationship in people as well as animals.  It builds oodles of trust and confidence.   Be aware of when you are doing something to potentially fill your own needs rather than your dog’s needs.  Love, encouragement and support is so important in dog training or working with animals, but just like with raising kids it needs to be well timed while providing them skills to also feel competent and able to problem solve.   So, ask yourself this question, is there anything you might be doing with your pup that you are mistaking for nurturing and accidentally crippling your ability to confidently lead your dog through tough situations to help them grow and be happy?  If so, start seeking out new things to do with your pup while recognizing the areas where you need to pull back on the attention you are giving or the areas where your dog tells you what to do.  Some examples might be bringing you toys to play with, barking to go outside to potty every single time,  barking to be let out of the crate, jumping on your guests for attention, etc.

Just a small tidbit of where to start working with your dog that will help in stressful situations, you must start at home.

Go on youtube and find a fun obedience drill.  Some examples of an obedience drill are Come, Sit, Break.  Another easy fun one is Come, Place, Come, Place.  These obedience drills can be done with food rewards and create muscle memory for when you need to use these commands to help your dog in a stressful situation.  Let’s say someone knocks on the door and you ask your dog to go to their bed.  If you don’t practice it regularly throughout the week over and over and practice with people in the house, your dog will not be able to do it when an actual new guest comes over and they are overexcited or stressed out.  Start with the easy stuff and have some fun actively working with your dog on repetition with basic commands to create that great muscle memory associated with you.

Gloria Gifford Conservatory Presents “The Motherf**ker with the Hat”

“The Motherf**ker with the Hat” written by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Gloria Gifford.

Stephen Adly Guirgis is a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright.

He’s also a New Yorker born and bred, which very is important to “The Motherf**ker with a Hat” because it is firmly set in New York City and peopled by classic, bombastic and hilarious New York characters.

MF9813 copy 2

The play revolves around Jackie, a former drug dealer, an addict who is fresh out of jail and determined to stay clean, get a job and become a responsible member of society.  His plans are somewhat curtailed by his girlfriend Veronica who we first encounter as she lambastes her mother on the phone for being a drunk as she snorts cocaine shortly before Jackie returns triumphant from a job interview.

Their relationship hits the wall when Jackie, mid-tumble with Veronica, finds a hat in her apartment…and it isn’t his.

The rest of the play is Jackie and Veronica’s hilariously and often moving struggle to stay together or break apart forever.  Jackie’s parole counselor Ralph tries to support him with his own home-grown, half-baked philosophy, all the while manipulating, shamelessly for his own gain.

Ralph’s wife is also involved and, tired of Ralph and his lies, hits on poor Jackie who is hardly in any kind of shape to handle it.  Jackie’s cousin Julio is also part of the action, hiding Jackie’s borrowed gun he tries to use on the mutherf**ker and attempting to love some sense into him.  But Jackie and Veronica have been sweethearts since they were kids and, even though their lives are epically dysfunctional and dramatically messed up, they love each other and that is real.

It’s a wild and funny and loudly tender play.  Full of deranged people and their ridiculous agendas.  So it’s highly relatable given our present national and global chaos, I only wish that we could all ‘love it out’ like Jackie and Veronica.

This is a play where the words are vitally important.  There can be no deviating from the text or ‘adapting’ the theme.  If done as the playwright intended it then it’s masterful, but I can see how easy it would be to miss the mark entirely.  Thankfully this production by Gloria Gifford keeps faithfully to the original concept of the play and because of that and also because of some really fine performances from every single actor, it’s absolutely brilliant.

MF9919 copy

I love this kind of play.  It’s full of passion and raw nerves and it demands your attention from the very first phrase to the very last embrace.  It’s performed full tilt with no intermission which I so much prefer.  It’s like stopping a high octane movie halfway through for a lunch break or something…what’s the point if it takes you so thoroughly out of the world everyone has worked so hard to create!?

So I highly recommend “The Motherf**ker  with the Hat.”  It’s full on, no holds bared, foul-mouthed, romantic moral fable.  The real bad guy is the one who seems to have overcome all his demons. But if your heart is dark, no amount of ‘clean living’ can save you and even though Veronica likes to get high and sees no reason to change, she loves Jackie as hard as he loves her and in the end who are we to judge when we can all agree that “love is all you need?”  So who knows, maybe they will stay together forever and prove everyone wrong…I hope they do.

Fred Mancuso Presents “Of Mice and Men”

“Of Mice and Men” – written by John Steinbeck , directed and produced by Fred Mancuso, now playing at Whitefire Theatre.

This is an iconic story and an important part of American history as well as a part of its literary tradition.

With such a pedigree comes a responsibility and any production attempted must do the work justice, which is tough to do when you are up against the echos of some incredible actors’ work in some brilliant cinematic versions. Lon Chaney Jr and Burgess Meredith, George Segal and Nicol Williamson and more recently, Gary Sinise and John Malkovich.

Setting all that aside, it’s the characters that drive this story and our very real empathy for them all.  Even the ones that are a little harder to love.  It’s a world that few of us could truly know, set in 1910,  when migrant farmworkers were predominantly white rather than hispanic, although the work then was just as hard as it is now.  It’s a time of terrible poverty and loneliness, when men worked on farm after farm trying to save the small amount of money they earned so they could buy their own place someday and work for themselves.  But more often than not their money was spent every weekend at the brothel and the bars and they stayed in the life until they couldn’t work anymore, then heaven only knows where they went.

Fred Mancuso’s production of this sad story of George and Lennie and the men they meet on the last farm they would ever work on is quite brilliantly done.  It’s as simply set as a play could be, and yet the actors seem to filling every inch of space with their artful and intense interpretations of these familiar and now classic roles.

Everyone is truly excellent and Mr Mancuso plays Lennie with a tender sadness that works so well against Ryan de Quintal’s determined George.  Everyone is really very, very good though, each playing their part with perfection as the story increases in its melodrama and its pain.

“Of Mice and Men” is a sad story and based on Steinbeck’s own experiences working the farms of California.  But when a painful, sad story is brilliantly told it becomes art, and that art then becomes beauty and we all leave with a sense that something wonderful was accomplished and all the hard work and the hours and hours of rehearsals was truly worth it.  This production really is that good.

If you like Steinbeck then I highly recommend this production of “Of Mice and Men.”  It’s not often that smaller theatre companies put up work as serious and important as this and it’s well worth your time and your support.

5 Tried and Tested Top Fitness and Beauty Tips for Women of Every Age

Staying in shape and sporting ageless skin is a challenge that women face at all stages of their lives.

Add to that are the personal and professional commitments that they must keep up with. Juggling multiple roles and finding the time to exercise regularly AND cook and eat healthy meals can be an insurmountable task. Like this feature on the Refinery29 explains, as you cross the age of 30, waning hormone levels can make it harder to control your weight and maintain the energy levels to keep up with with your workouts.

Are you looking for simple but effective fitness and beauty tips for women of every age? Read ahead for some of the solutions you can easily adopt in daily living.

1. Focus on Eating Healthy Meals

After putting in long days at work, it can be difficult to find the time and energy to shop for ingredients and then, go home and cook nutritious meals for the whole family. A good option is to order organic meal delivery from a prepared meal service close to your home. Check the menu for meal options that are organic and free of GMOs, chemical preservatives, additives, and any other harmful elements. Focus on adding lots of fruits and vegetables to your meals that are loaded with antioxidants that fight free radicals and keep your skin ageless and glowing. Now that’s one of the simplest of fitness and beauty tips for women of every age.

You’ll also find that since these meals are cooked with healthy grass-fed or wild-caught meats and fish, they add to the nutrients that will help you keep your weight in control. Most such meal delivery services source their ingredients from farmer’s markets in and around the city and Noho has plenty of those. So, you can safely rely on the food you receive on your doorstep each evening or over the weekends to suit your convenience.

2. Focus on Taking Up Workouts You Enjoy

A moderate amount of exercise is highly essential for maintaining your weight and the higher levels of blood circulation can do wonders for your skin. Choose an activity you love and dancing is one of the perfect fitness and beauty tips for women of every age. As a resident of Noho, you’ll find lots of dance and music studios along with fitness centers where you can sign up for any dance form your particularly enjoy. Like the Los Angeles Daily News reports, one of the newest of such centers is soon coming to Lankershim Boulevard. So, look around for a studio close to where you live and burn away those excess calories to develop a toned, lithe youthful body.

3. Focus on Getting Adequate Sleep

Another of the easiest of fitness and beauty tips for women of all ages is getting adequate sleep. At the end of a long day at work, it is understandable that you want to keep up with the news and activities of friends and family on social media. Go ahead and indulge in a little digital time but, only as long as that time does not take away from your beauty sleep. When you don’t sleep enough, your body responds by releasing large doses of cortisol that lowers metabolism and contributes to weight gain. Inadequate sleep also interferes with the repair of worn out tissues and results in fluid retention. All of these effects are likely to show on your skin that could start looking prematurely aged and tired.

4. Focus on Getting Rid of the Unwanted Inches

Despite opting for the best of diets and exercise regimens, it is understandable that you may find it hard to get rid of the last pockets of unwanted fat. That’s because diets and workouts only help you shed weight all over the body. A good option is to sign up for the fat freezing treatment at BHRC. A simple, non-invasive fat loss option, the procedure uses a device that freezes the fat cells below the skin. Since fat cells have a higher freezing point, they respond to the cold by dying. Over the next few weeks, your body will eliminate the debris by moving it to the lymphatic system to be removed as waste.

5. Focus on Keeping Your Body Hydrated

Drinking lots of water and keeping your body hydrated is one of the most essential fitness and beauty tips for women of every age. Check out this feature in the Women’s Health magazine that explains how water flushes out the toxins and boosts your metabolism so you burn calories faster. The water you drink also helps resist the dry, flaky appearance that ultimately leads to wrinkles and fine lines. You’ll also find that water maintains the levels of hyaluronic acid in your skin. As a result it remains smooth and supple and resists the effects of aging better. Given that the body directs the water to nourish your internal organs as a priority, you’ll need at least 8 glasses of water each day for the hydration to reach your skin.

When you think about it, the fitness and beauty tips for women of every age that are mentioned above aren’t all the complicated or elaborate. They are more about common sense and the stuff you actually know. The hard part is including these tips in your daily life and finding the time to eat healthy, drink enough water, and exercise. But, try and make the effort. Your body and skin will thank you for it.

Get Rid of Acne with Laser Acne Scar Treatment

We all know how frustrating it can be when dealing with acne scars.

They make your skin dull, uneven and affects our complexion. It takes tons of makeup to hide those marks and multiple treatments to get rid of them. These scars really affect our personality and make us lose self-confidence. People stop socializing, fail their job interviews, and slowly slide into depression.

A good smooth skin totally adds up to our personality. You feel confident enough to capture the world. Thanks to the progressive technology, getting rid of acne scars and getting the confidence back has become much easier. How? With the help of laser acne scar treatment, your skin can be free of acne, caused by skin pores with excessive oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.

Laser Acne Scar Treatment

Laser treatments have become very common these days. Most of the issues are covered with laser treatments such as hair removal, weak eyesight, wrinkles and fine lines, and acne scars as well. Many home remedies, face wash and creams are available in the market that promises effective results, but fail to impress. However, with laser acne scar treatment, all the scars can disappear quickly.

Laser treatment helps in reducing the acne scars by resurfacing the skin and producing new collagen. This collagen helps fill in the hollow parts of the skin and then smoothing them out. The upper layer of skin is condensed with the laser beam during the procedure. The skin repairs itself naturally and helps heal the wound.

Effects of Laser Treatment

Laser treatment is considered safe and reliable. However, it may contain some minor side effects:

  • Swelling
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Bleeding and blood spots
  • Saggy skin

However, these effects are temporary and disappear within a short amount of time. It is always recommended to consult your doctor and inform him or her beforehand if you have any health issues. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are not advised to use any laser treatment as it could have an effect on the baby. Also, if you have any health concerns, ensure to tell your dermatologist.

Before and After Treatment

Laser treatment can turn out to be a bad experience if these steps are not taken pre and post-procedure.

  • Find a certified laser clinic with an experienced dermatologist
  • Ensure that your skin can tolerate the temperature during the treatment. In case, if you feel burning, tell your doctor immediately.
  • One laser treatment at a time. People often go through multiple laser treatments and end up with an even worst skin condition. Tell your doctor if you have been through or going through any laser treatment
  • Avoid direct contact with sun and heat. Use of sunscreen is recommended.

The result of the laser treatment may vary in cases. However, it reduces the pigmentation and smoothes out skin texture. People may not experience any pain, but it may cause a little discomfort during the procedure. To avoid any bad experience, consult the best laser clinic in your town and book an appointment with the dermatologist.

Not Your Father’s Mexico City Anymore

Heading down to Mexico City for a long weekend is indeed the thing to do nowadays.

With slick modern skyscrapers and shopping malls along the Paseo de la Reforma and Avenida Insurgentes, one of the largest city parks in the world, top-notch museums, ancient pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial buildings and cathedrals, and not to mention a red-hot culinary scene that’s taking the world by storm, Mexico City offers something for everybody that’s visiting.
In the spirit of the late Anthony Bourdain, I say there’s no better way to get to know a city than by eating your way through it with the locals. Start your weekend off in Mexico City by going on the “Street Food 101” tour with Rocio at Eat Like a Local. You’ll have a seemingly never-ending amount of street and market foods and drinks to consume throughout several of Mexico City’s neighborhoods (including some off- the- beaten path).  I won’t give the secret location away, but you’ll get to devour the very best fish tacos in Mexico City, and it’s in a place you’d never expect or get to as a tourist yourself.

If there’s one museum to carve out time to see, it’s the world-class National Museum of Anthropology. There is a hall dedicated to each of the cultural regions of Mesoamerica (think Aztecs and Mayans).  You could easily spend a full day here, but you should at least dedicate a few hours to exploring this museum. Start with the Mexica (Aztec) hall and the incredible Stone of the Sun.

While I don’t recommend staying in the historic central part of Mexico City (it can get a little quiet at night, and it’s not known for its nightlife or restaurant scene), it’s a must see area that exudes an exciting energy and is also the city’s political and social gathering place.  The Catedral Metropolitana, built by the Spanish in the early 1500’s is the largest cathedral in the western hemisphere, with a majestic blend of architectural styles. Close to the Cathedral, and not discovered or unearthed until the 1970s, is the Templo Mayor – which was once the largest and most important temple of the Aztec Empire (until the Spanish destroyed it after their conquest).
Unless you have specific tastes for nightlife, most folks are going to be happy bar and club hopping around the Roma or Condesa areas of Mexico City. Close by Zona Rosa is a lively gay-friendly – tourist-friendly area that’s condensed enough within a few blocks and avenues to make a night out on the town easy to do logistics-wise and hard really to get lost. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are for drinking, dancing and feasting in Mexico City. Everyone of all ages comes out to play, and it truly is a city that never sleeps!
The perfect day trip from Mexico City (about an hour’s drive) is visiting the ancient and mysterious pyramids and complex of Teotihuacan.  Founded around 1000BC, it was Mesoamerica’s cultural and commercial center. Like anything, having a guide to give you the rich history and perspectives is well worth the extra money. Contact Andres from Mexico a Pie (pronounced pee-ay) for a tour. They’ll pick you up at your hotel or Airbnb and take you back so you don’t have to worry about taking a bus or navigating the metro to get there. Andres and his partner Anna have incredible knowledge of ancient Mexica cultures and offer amazing insight into the everyday life of these peoples. Andres and Anna almost transform you back in time to what it must have been like to be a part this UNESCO World Heritage site.

For mural lovers, Mexico City seems like heaven. Probably the greatest and most famous Mexican painter/artist of the twentieth century is Diego Rivera. He is also well known today for his tumultuous marriage to fellow artist and pop culture icon Frida Kahlo. Rivera painted in the fresco style. His more restrained murals depict the daily life of indigenous people in Mexico, such as his renderings of women selling white calla lilies in the marketplace. A terrific free place to view his murals is the Secretaría de Educación Pública (Ministry of Education). It’s a government building near the historic section of Mexico City. Have your passport (or at least a copy) on you to show at the entrance to security personnel. Allow at least 90 minutes as there are several floors to view Diego’s spectacular work.
All in all, I found Mexico City to be no less safe than any other major city in the world. And the locals are very friendly and hospitable. Go with an open mind, a zest for learning and exploring, and you’ll have a terrific time!
PS: Uber is terrific in Mexico City, and it’s super cheap!

Actors, Don’t Stop Working on Your Craft.

I had an actor come to my studio recently. He was discouraged and frustrated.

He felt like he had to start over as things weren’t happening for him. He had gotten good solid training, booked a few jobs, and was getting out a lot. He was also very good at the “business” of promoting, marketing, and networking. When he came to me he said he wasn’t booking often enough. He was getting lots of auditions, but not booking.   I remembered him from many years ago.  He was an excellent actor when I saw his work two years ago.

His story is very common, one that I’ve experienced too many times during my coaching years. Let’s call him Tom.

Here’s a typical story.

Tom went to college. He got a degree in accounting or maybe nursing. Having graduated from college with a degree and training, he was “certified” in his field and went out to work.  After working in his chosen field for a few years he decided to make a change and pursue acting. So he followed the same educational protocol, he found a school and began to study. He wanted to get trained and get his “Diploma“.  He studied acting intently for over 2 years, building his foundation, understanding, and learning the craft.  He was very proficient and worked very hard. After two years he had good training. He grasped the preparation process, had sound emotional connections, did a lot of scene study, acted in some plays in classes, studied audition technique, on camera, and more. He even had a worthy acting reel with material to show. He had completed an intense training program for over two years, and he was solid.

The time came when he decided to leave his studies. He felt well trained, knew what he was doing and deemed himself proficient in acting.  So he quit all his classes and decided he was now a professional actor. He was only going to work, no more classes. Classes were for students in his mind.  He had his “credentials”, and made it his business to start working.

That’s a good head space to get into, but a career in acting doesn’t often work like that. You need to keep your instrument in shape and keep yourself sharp.  Tom had gotten rusty and out of shape with his acting skills. I saw Tom audition for a part recently.  He was good, not great. For me, it was sloppy and not specific enough. He was out of practice with his craft. That’s all, out of shape as an actor. He didn’t spend enough time keeping up with his work.

Acting is like being an athlete. You don’t stop your training, you need to stay in shape and always be playing your best game.

I was fine with Tom tapering off his intense rigorous classes, and encouraged him to go for work, but told him many times, “Don’t stop doing the work, work out regularly, keep your instrument in tune, so you will be ready when a break comes your way”.

An athlete that trains for a race, doesn’t stop running in between races. Actors shouldn’t stop working their acting chops in between jobs, especially when jobs are far and few between.

Fortunately for Tom, it’s an easy fix. It’s not going backward, it’s what is necessary. Take a class, join a community of actors, maybe a theater company, find a place to work out, “Don’t let the clay dry!”.

Don’t make Tom’s mistake.

I’ve seen it way too often. Keep the juices working, it’s not only good for your work, it’s good for your spirit and well being.  And make sure you’re being challenged, not walking through the motions.  Ok, that’s it for today, I’m off to the gym.

The Whitefire Theatre Presents “The Blade of Jealousy”

“The Blade of Jealosy,” written by Henry Ong, adapted from Tirso de Molina’s “La Celosa De Si Misma” and directed by Denise Blasor

Based on a classic play of the Spanish Golden Age Plays, “La Celosa De Si Misma” by Tirso de Molinas, this cleverly updated version brings the struggles of self-image, self-doubt and love a full four hundred years from its original form firmly into the present day.

Nothing much has changed over the centuries when it comes to battles of the heart.  We are all just as desperate, just as broken and just as driven into the arms of the questionable as well as the well deserving.  This energetic, quirky and hilarious play leaves us in no doubt of our tragic and comical similarities.

Set in present-day Los Angeles, our hero, Melchor, has traveled from afar with his faithful companion Ventura to meet for the first time his online romance Magdalena.  While taking shelter in a church before his date with her he meets a mysterious veiled woman and falls hopelessly in love, which is a bit awkward when you consider he was minutes away from meeting Magdalena for the first time.  For extra comical effect, they had agreed to never see each others face until they actually met…perfection.

Unbeknownst to him the mysterious women is, in fact, his Magdalena.  When Melchor keeps his appointment with her, she immediately senses that something is wrong. Melchor has no clue that these two women are one in the same and plans to reject Magdelena in favor of his new love. It’s a classical and highly entertaining mess.

Magdelena’s maid, Quinones, is also deeply involved in the layers of plot and trickery and, of course, she has her own agenda.  Madgelena’s brother Jeronimo is smitten himself and pursuing the lovely actress Angela, keen to create the perfect web series for her and win her heart. There is plenty to distract and conflict with everyone in this story, it’s all very playful and magically realistic, which is brilliant.

The energy level is through the roof and creates a play that is a lot of fun to watch with wonderful characters and really excellent performances full of color and drama and life.  This is a production in more of a ‘playhouse’ tradition.  Characters emotions are high and the story flies along propelled with a fabulously infectious passion and urgency.  The audience is involved and included frequently, the 4th wall charmingly broken with abandon.  There is also the added bonus of a wonderfully talented musician on stage throughout, Longo Chu, completing the ‘playhouse’ effect and accompanying and uplifting the action and the story beautifully.

“The Blade of Jealousy” is highly entertaining, warmly farcical and brilliantly crafted. Mr Ong is an accomplished playwright and this lovingly recreated play, an homage to a classic, shows us all how firmly connected we all are to our past and how strangely familiar the sixteenth-century writings of a Spanish Baroque Roman Catholic Monk can feel when tweaked and reimagined with respect, integrity and love.

Above the Curve Theatre Presents “26 Pebbles”

“26 Pebbles” runs from July 13 through July 29, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 7pm at T.U. Studio in the NoHo Arts Districgt

“26 Pebbles” is a play about the terrible events at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut.

This horrific day is one of those times in our lives where we all knew where we were when first we heard of it.  Much like 9/11 or perhaps our own individual tragedies, this particular day truly and deeply changed each of us individually and all of us collectively.  But something so difficult and so distressing is hard to translate into art, certainly performance art.  How can we dramatize a day that in many ways we all want to forget, or how can we ever really do justice to the stories of these peoples precious lives?

“26 Pebbles” is an answer to this dilemma.

It is a clear, beautiful, heartbreaking, unnerving and powerful answer.  With a careful, gentle and humbling examination of the day through the eyes and hearts of some of those who were at the center of it, the moments of their lives before as well as after those horrific five minutes are laid out for us to see and the grace and the reverence of the actors on stage allow us to in some small way experience it.

The story of the day is told as if we, the audience, asked each of these characters to tell us about that day from their own perspective.  There are many more characters than actors on stage, so these wonderful performers artfully and sympathetically double and triple up, skillfully adding scarves, or hats or glasses or attitude as they morph between them.  A parent, a teacher, a farmer, an accountant, a new resident and one whose family had been in the area for generations and many, many more populate the play.

They paint a picture of a town full of good neighbors, old friends and cherished traditions.

Then the impossible happens.  It unfolds as we sit holding our breath in the audience, hoping that this drama on stage is just that, a drama and not a documentary of what actually happened.  But there is nothing sensationalized about this play or the performances by any actor.  The story is reverently told, piece by tiny piece.  The setting is a classroom and the map of the day’s events is drawn upon the classroom chalkboard taking pride of place on stage as the play unfurls.

It’s an artful and stunning way to take us back to that day.

The stories on stage are most of those who were in the town when it happened, rather than those who were in the rooms.  The stories are in that way filtered for us, we are protected from the horror of a first-hand account or a re-enactment.  Yet these peripheral anecdotes are chillingly vivid, profoundly moving and completely relatable.

The harm done through this brutal act is felt in waves of pain rippling out from the murders of each child and each teacher, the plays “pebbles.”  The impact of this pain then ripples out again, through the town, through the country, and around the world.  No one is left untouched by it and the ripples continue, through Stoneman Douglas, through Las Vegas and through every single shooting on every single day in America.

How can we change this?  How can we stop this?

How can we make even the smallest impact in our upside-down world?  I wish I knew.  Creating important art like “26 Pebbles” and performing it over and over again, in every forum and every venue and never forgetting or letting go might do something…and something is so much better than nothing.  And sometimes, with hope, something turns into everything.

I highly recommend “26 Pebbles” from the very good people of Above The Curve Theatre.  Bravo to their instincts who take their talents and their hearts and make something happen.

It’s not a long run, so don’t dawdle…let’s keep those ripples moving ever outwards.

NoHo’s Tribute to Amy Winehouse

Amy, Amy, Amy.

Yes. The NoHo Arts District dot Com team was and still is a huge fan of Amy Winehouse. Her album “Back to Black” won five 2008 Grammy Awards, and made her the first British female to win five Grammys, including three of the general field “Big Four” awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. You should listened to her debut album “Frank,” because it gives you even more of an appreciation for her range and talent…and even more sadness that she is gone.

Amy died of alcohol poisoning on July 23,  2011 at the infamous age of  27. Every year on the anniversary of her death we salute her and think positive thoughts for those struggling with any type of addiction. We hope to not lose any more talented artists.

Ant-Man and the Wasp; Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Review – Ant-Man and the Wasp; Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Ant-Man and the Wasp, directed by Peyton Reed is a loose, limber, thoroughly engaging sequel to 2015’s Ant-Man, all the more so by not having to spend too much time bringing viewers up to speed.

This latest entry in the Marvel Universe takes place after the events in Captain America: Civil War, as our hero Scott/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has been under house arrest and is now a mere three days away from being allowed back into the outside world (a penalty for his international flight to help Captain America). However Scott is not able to simply bide his time, since he is prevailed upon by his mentor (and Ant-Man prototype Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and his daughter Hope (aka the Wasp, played by Evangeline Lilly) to use his particular skills to locate Pym’s wife Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), who long ago entered the “quantum realm” while on a dangerous mission—and has lately been forging a psychic connection with Scott. Complicating matters is Anna (a very good Hannah John-Kamen), a troubled and very dangerous young woman who has trouble with an upended cellular structure that grants her incredible powers—and no escape from endless pain. She too wishes to locate Janet—for altogether different reasons.

Sounds pretty serious, doesn’t it? Despair not, for Ant-Man and the Wasp, with its screenplay credited to several writers (including Rudd) maintains a light tone throughout. While it does have the occasional poignant, reflective moment, the film is still jauntier and livelier than its predecessor, with ample opportunities for comic riffs and absurdist moments. Paul Rudd is in top form, whether he’s feigning knowledge of the complicated scientific terms being bandied about, bantering with father figure Hank, parrying with Agent Woo (Randall Park), finding some chemistry with Hope, or trying to justify the faith of his adoring daughter. Douglas and Lawrence Fishburne (as Hank’s former assistant) also have some good moments as they bicker over their individual worth amidst their outsize egos. Perhaps the comic highlight (among several potential candidates) is Michael Pena’s faithful sidekick Luis being compelled with truth serum to reveal Ant-Man’s whereabouts—only in a most involved, circuitous, and hilarious manner. Despite all the film’s laughs, the heart of Ant-Man and the Wasp is always in the right place, and as an added bonus, the fight scenes stick around just long enough not to overstay their welcome. Also…don’t forget to stick around for the credits.

Perhaps the most rousing, stirring moment on display in films this summer is when minister and television host Fred Rogers appears before a stern, heretofore unsympathetic Congressional Committee, and eloquently pleads the case for additional funding of Public Television—and manages to win over the Chairman, who tells him, in essence, he’s just saved Public Television. Won’t You Be My Neighbor? is one of my favorite films this year, an informative, insightful and moving portrait of Fred Rogers, who became an icon of  public television-, for his deceptively simple children’s show, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. I say deceptively simple because as anyone who watched the show knows, the Neighborhood would try to teach significant moral lessons and confront—in its own gentle way– certain troublesome aspects about the world in a way that made it palatable for both children and adults. Won’t You Be My Neighbor is obviously a labor of love—for its director, for its participants like the musician Yo-Yo Ma and mainstay Francois (aka Officer) Clemons, as well as members of Mr. Rogers’ family. Morgan Neville’s film is an affectionate, occasionally probing look at a soft-spoken, strong-willed, profoundly compassionate man; it doesn’t say he’s perfect, and there are suggestions that perhaps Mr. Rogers was less comfortable being a father to a few than being a moral beacon for millions of children. And while Rogers was able to use the show to foster tolerance and diversity (witness his casting of Mr. Clemmons), he would discourage Mr. Clemmons from coming out of the closet, since Rogers knew that was one battle he and his show could not win—at that time.  Nevertheless, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, is a wonderfully realized depiction of a good man and his tireless efforts to educate and illuminate in occasionally trying times; it is one of the best documentaries in recent memory, and one of the finer films of this year.
