Who says nobody reads? Our NoHo teens do! North Hollywood Library, a.k.a. NoHo Library, has their Teen Book Club starting August 7!
Well if you’re in the NoHo Arts Distict you’re a creative soul. Our North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Regional Branch Library (a.k.a. NoHo Library) is no exception. They create programs for our neighborhood that are fun and encourage reading and library usage. We asked NoHo Librarian Basya Samuels about the Teen Book Club and what they’re reading next. It’s quite perfect for the NoHo Arts District since we are a theatre district…20 in one-sqaure mile!
Make sure to follow our NoHo Library for all the fun (education is fun!) they have planned for the neighborhood!

What:
North Hollywood Library Teen Book Club Reads Backstagers vol 1 by James Tynion IV and Ryan Sygh.
James Tynion IV (Detective Comics, The Woods) teams up with artist Rian Sygh (Munchkin, Stolen Forest) for an incredibly earnest story that explores what it means to find a place to fit in when you’re kinda an outcast. When Jory transfers to an all-boys private high school, he’s taken in by the lowly stage crew known as the Backstagers. Hunter, Aziz, Sasha, and Beckett become his new best friends and introduce him to an entire magical world that lives beyond the curtain that the rest of the school doesn’t know about, filled with strange creatures, changing hallways, and a decades-old legend of a backstage crew that went missing and was never found.
“With heart and chutzpah to spare, [The Backstagers] soars as a sincere love letter to the unsung heroes of the theater world.” – Newsarama
* When:
08/07 at 3:30 PM for teens ages 11-18
* Where:
North Hollywood Public Library Meeting room
* Why:
Starting in the spring of 2017, the North Hollywood Library began a book club for teens, with a goal to highlight great graphic novels, as the book club grew we began to alternate between prose novels and graphic novels. Some months are themed, such as the graphic novel March By John Lewis for Black History Month, others are just to highlight unique reads such as The First Rule Of Punk by Celia C Perez. Each month we try to tie in a craft or a program themed to the book, to go with the theme of magic after reading The Witch Boy by Molly Ostertag we watched the movie Labyrinth. This upcoming meeting we’ll be discussing Backstagers Vol 1 by James Tynion IV and Ryan Sygh, a comic about a group of teens and the magical world that exists behind the curtain of their school’s theater.
* How:
Copies of the book can be checked out from the North Hollywood Library, copies are held at the circulation desk, or you read it digitally on the Hoopla app for free with your Los Angeles Public Library card. Why we love our NoHo Library….
