[NoHo Arts District, CA] –   A NoHo Arts theatre review of the Group Rep’s production of You Can’t Take it With You by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, directed by Leota Rhodes and produced by Dawn Halloran, running through July 7.

The Group Rep has an uncanny ability to pick the right play for the right time. You Can’t Take it With You, is a Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a quirky family in the 30s and their endearing habit of freethinking their way through a fractured, stuffy, nonsensical and soon-to-be-at-war world. Given what we are all in the middle of right now, it’s a comfort to know that resilience, loyalty and humor can triumph over pretty much anything.

The story revolves around the youngest daughter of the family who seems on the surface to be the most outwardly ‘normal’ in a group of wonderfully whimsical creatures. She has fallen in love with her boss’s son at the investment bank where she works on Wall Street. A world away from her family home where originality and most importantly fun are the center of their world.

As the play unfolds we meet many characters, not just the fabulous family, but a Russian dancing instructor, a slightly unhinged IRS agent, some heavy handed police busy raiding the house, and the parents of the boyfriend, both stuck in their sad successful lives and positively stunned by the joyously unhinged family their son seems determined to marry into.

It’s a beautiful play and the Group Rep does their typical utmost to share its brilliance with us. The actors are, to a fault, impeccable and inspiring in their love for the characters they play. I adored the humanism of it. The frivolous playfulness and yet, importantly, the serious study of how a life lived in the pursuit of nothing but money will bring you nothing…but money.

The Group Rep’s You Can’t Take it With You was absolutely brilliant and packed full of wonderfully eccentric and entertaining performances, and I highly recommend it to all! Bravo!!!!
