Up next at The Road Theatre Company is “Under Construction 2,” live, in-person play readings October 22 – October 30.
What is UNDER CONSTRUCTION 2 you might ask?
Continuing the success of Under Construction 1, Carlyle King, Jessica Broutt, and Mackenna Goodrich went on a search for the playwrights for Under Construction 2021 (UC2). The pandemic came with one silver lining: instead of only looking at local playwrights, their virtual sessions allowed UC2 to go national!
Their mission was to find diverse and dynamic voices committed to working as a group on developing new works from the ground up; to come in with an idea and desire to refine their voice with actors and directors, all committed to the same goal of crafting a play. With more than 200 submissions from across the country, The Road Theatre Company is excited to introduce you to the playwrights of UC2.
“The UNDER CONSTRUCTION 2 plays are just that….still “under construction.” This is the result of the playwrights’ making a one-year commitment to write a play. These readings are the next stage in their development and we hope you can join us!”
Here is the lineup of new plays, coming to you LIVE on The Road Theatre Company’s Magnolia Stage.

“BISEXUAL SADNESS” is about what it sounds like. Faye is getting married to a man, and though she really truly loves him, she wishes he was a woman. She’s not a closeted lesbian. She’s just sad that she’ll have to fight harder to be part of the queer communities she’s always found home in. “BISEXUAL SADNESS” is about the specific loneliness of being a bisexual woman in love with a man, while staring down the barrel of a lifetime of feeling that way. It takes the meme of the “Sad Bisexual” and treats it with curiosity and respect to interrogate questions of belonging, identity, cultural migrations and kinship. It poses the question: “why do so many people seem to find bisexual women so irritating?” and dares you, the audience, to answer.
