Actors Workout Studio Presents: The Writers Group Production, “Tonight’s The Night” Running June 29 – July 14, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM.
The AWS Writers Group has created five new short plays loosely based around the theme of “tonight’s the night,” an alternative title might have been “grabbing the moment by the short and curlies,” if you know what I mean.…
It’s a very clever way of making each and every play perform at its highest pitch right out of the gate.
We meet the characters in each of these plays at moments in their lives when roads must be taken, choices made and caution thrown to the wind. Perfect for a bit of drama or a bit of comedy.
These writers have certainly taken the prompt to heart. A lonely sensitive waitress puts her heart on the line, a couple of slamming poets politicize themselves into a murderous frenzy, two wise guys in a nightclub bond with a broken loser, two veterans shoot the breeze about our desperate world until one of them makes an explosive statement, a suicidal man calls the suicide hotline only to discover their ethos has slightly changed.
They all lead seamlessly into each other, although their approaches are all very different. The impact is one of constant consideration and thoughtfulness. Nothing is ever quite as we might first imagine, is it? Our first impressions, although important, are never really the same as our last.
If we leave ourselves open to surprise, to change and to maybe even learning something new, how exponentially more magical would our lives become.
I love short plays. They have a tremendous energy and immediacy, like a great record, or a shot of whiskey or a sweet kiss.
It’s as if with their life so short lived they have nothing to prove. Short plays are, at their absolute best, honest, sometimes brutally so and daring. Like those butterflies that only live a day, they are gone before you know it. But the really good ones live on, they roll around in our heads and refuse to leave. The lovely people at the AWS always seem to produce these precious and furiously real little plays that do just that. And the five poignant, funny, thought-provoking and touching plays of “Tonight’s The Night” are still all rolling around in my head and probably will be for quite some time. Bravo!!
It’s a very ‘short’ run, no pun intended, so don’t dawdle and get your tickets and support this brilliant theatre!
