The Group Rep presents ”To Grandmother’s House We Go,” written by Joanna McClelland Glass, directed by Linda Alznauer, and running through March 6 at The Lonny Chapman Theatre.
Set in the 80s, “To Grandmother’s House We Go” is a farcical take on the interminable return of the adult child to its “happiest place,” namely the childhood home.
Told over Thanksgiving weekend, the family of grandmother, great uncle and mother all live in a large rambling Victorian somewhere in upstate NY. But, as each of the mothers’ three children return, all with their various dramas and wants, the tensions rise and the house creaks and groans to accommodate them all, along with its occupants.

”To Grandmother’s House We Go” is a timeless tale of family strife and struggles, children who believe they know far better than their elders how things should be, and elders tired of pushing back and tireder still of the entitlements of the somewhat youthful.
What is hidden is revealed and what is revealed is neatly dealt with in entertaining and highly unexpected ways.

Gorgeously set, as the plays always are here, the story offers ample opportunity for big characters boldly drawn and familial grudges knowingly unfolding.
“To Grandmother’s House We Go” is a very clever play, beautifully written, deftly directed and with some lovely performances from the Group Rep company of actors.
I enjoyed it immensely.
The Group Rep takes all things Covid very seriously, you’ll be happy to hear. So, the dilemma of “will I, won’t I” should be put to rest. Everyone is masked, sans performers of course and vax cards are checked at the door. It’s still a bit dodgy venturing out I know. But, suffice it to say, I felt duly sorted and very safe in the audience. The theatre is large and spacious and they have even replaced and upgraded their AC system!
Supporting local theatre is paramount in NoHo, we have lost so many, half in fact. So book a ticket, grab your friends and family and see a play!!
