The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Voices”

The Whitefire Theatre Solofest Presents “Voices.” Written and Performed by Carla Delaney. Developed and Directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson.

Carla Delaney is a brilliant mimic.

In fact, she makes her living out of it. You can hear her voice as various characters as diverse as Bart Simpson and Liza Minnelli all over the world in TV, video games and theme parks.  “Voices” is a rather ironic title for her solo show then, I suppose.  But it is her captivating story that takes irony to a whole new level.

Carla was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Syndrome years ago and was fascinated by the obvious connection between her illness and the center of her work and her creativity…her voice.

So the play is her discovering why and how her body is battling itself. Hashimoto’s is when your immune system attacks your thyroid and all hell breaks loose, hormonally speaking. Carla gives glorious life to characters drawn from her own body parts, all with opinions and attitudes potential solutions to her troubles.  And all with their own individual and hilarious voices!

Carla Delaney is clearly an absolute master of voices and her ability to impersonate just about anybody is quite remarkable. But it is her journey to find her own strength and her own voice as a woman in an industry so determined to take them both from her that so exquisitely forms this wonderful play.

Carla has brilliant comedic physicality too, twisting and gyrating and pretzeling herself into various parts of her own anatomy in truly original and hilarious ways.  She is a master storyteller.  Able to steer the narrative beautifully in heartfelt and authentic ways, manipulating the audience sweetly and gracefully as she unfolded her story on the stage.  Such a simple theme – finding your voice – but one so relevant, poetically and politically perfect, now more than ever.

This play is solo theatre at the highest of levels.  Funny, smart, inventive and compelling with enormous heart and poignance.  I absolutely loved this show!!  Bravo Carla!!!

Hopefully, it will be in the Hollywood Fringe this year, so get a ticket and grab your relevant other and go!!!!
