Burlesque is an ancient art and one growing in popularity as it navigates the brave new world of progressive entertainment.
What Cat LaCohie has created with this new show, “Vixen DeVille Revealed,” is her vivid and riveting story of how Burlesque found her as she found herself.
Cat is British and her fabulously sarcastic, razor-sharp sense of humor really drives the show. Self-depreciating and adorable, she playfully captivates the audience as she unfolds her fascinating history on stage. She navigates quite brilliantly the many reasons that Burlesque and magic appealed to her, and as she does so she skillfully performs some wonderful magic in spectacular costumes with the help of volunteers from the audience. She also plays with fire and spins and maneuvers beautifully in her steel ring suspended above the stage. All this and some very engaging mixed media interviews and film footage projected on stage to keep us entertained while she changes costumes and resets the stage.
The show is a showcase of her excellent technique, but it is also a documentary about her development as an entertainer and of her own very particular brand of magical burlesque. She shares with us how this art form allowed her to find her confidence, to forgive what she believed were her physical flaws, finding fault as most of us do in what merely makes us gorgeously human, and she explains how she developed a life as an artist and entertainer traveling the world with her unique style of magical burlesque.
Cat has created quite a niche for herself, educating, inspiring and even coaching others using burlesque to help them find their fire as she has found hers. It’s a truly wonderful show. Cat and her alter ego “Vixen” really do reveal their world to us and the slipping of the veil does nothing to diminish the dazzle, the mystery and the magical nature of her Burlesque.
“Vixen DeVille Revealed” is having a three month run at The Whitefire. Only once a month though, so you will only have two more chances to catch this remarkable event. Cat is a star. She is mesmerizing as a performer, gifted as a writer and utterly fearless. She has overcome injury, shyness, self-doubt and much more to create this warmly hilarious and physically gifted persona and to forge a career in a business full of competition and flashy gimmicks.
