The Whitefire Theatre Presents “Tales From The Powder Room”

The Whitefire Theatre Presents “Tales From The Powder Room,” Written and Directed by Robyn Migel.

Eight powerful, hilarious and excruciatingly relatable sketches… all set in a ladies bathroom.

The stories that play out are familiar to us all.  Stressful, tearful, revelatory, singular and all interconnected.

It’s a terrific concept.  Who hasn’t had a life-changing encounter in a ladies powder room?  Why I had a particularly moving conversation with a total stranger just the other day.  It’s something about the bright lights and the leveling activities.  There’s nowhere to hide, all our insecurities are fully visible, reflected in the shiny porcelain tile.

These actresses are absolutely superb.  Brazen and subtle, twisted and profound.

The subjects they deal with are every day and utterly devastating.  From period pains to boardroom bullying, office rivalry to an unexpected pregnancy.  A mother counsels her daughter on the phone after she punches a boy who grabbed her breast.  The scourge of the office deals with her rapidly progressing cancer as a co-worker braves her brusk and openly aggressive exterior to offer help in her suffering.  Another sketch deals with the ridiculousness of religious-based bigotry towards a transgender woman whose only sin is being made in her own God’s image.

It’s a lot…but it’s all so perfectly contained in the hour or so we spend getting to know these remarkable and disparate characters that, in the end, it feels like not nearly enough.

This show runs every Saturday night through October 12, I urge you to grab your girlfriends and see it.  These stories might be familiar, but it’s that which makes them relatable and very important to us all.

“Tales From The Powder Room” won the Encore Producers award this year and I can totally understand why…it’s brilliant!!
