[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of  The Colony Theatre’s The Wedding Singer – The Musical Comedy, running June 5-29.

So I have to admit that the movie, The Wedding Singer, just happens to be one my absolute favorites. It’s the kind of movie that you play when you need cheering up, or the therapeutic power of laughing out loud. Even after all these years, it still works! So I was a bit nervous to see this stage version, which, while it stays pretty close to the movie, is an actual musical. Not the movie on stage.

The Wedding Singer is absolutely packed with really excellent original songs and dance numbers as big as the 80s hair on every girl on stage. I thought it probably wouldn’t feel as special as the movie…oh, how wrong I was!

Just in case you have not seen the movie, the story revolves around Robbie, a professional wedding singer with the hottest wedding band in New Jersey and Julia, a waitress who is engaged to a jerk. It’s about love and lies and following our hearts. And full of brilliant eighties music and wild unforgettable characters.

The Wedding Singer – The Musical Comedy is every bit as charming and heartwarming as the movie. And while The Colony’s version does not include Drew Barrymore or Adam Sandler, the leads of this Wedding Singer are just as sweet, funny and believable. Blake Jenner and Hannah Sedlacek are absolutely adorable, in fact!

But then the entire cast of this wildly entertaining musical extravaganza are exceptional! Each throwing themselves 1000 percent into these truly iconic roles and dancing and singing their way into our hearts.

We all need something innocent and poignant, funny and endearing right now. More than ever, in fact and The Wedding Singer – The Musical Comedy delivers just the right amount of fun, nostalgia and hope we all need.

How lucky we are to have The Colony Theatre in Burbank to bring us wonderful shows like this! It runs through June 29, so don’t dawdle!
