[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts music review of The Splatter Pattern’s “While We Were Making Plans” album.
With echoes of the brilliant and beloved British 80s band XTC, The Splatter Pattern’s “While We Were Making Plans” is a group of extraordinarily witty, musically fluid songs.
Created by Bill Ryan and Dave Storms during the pandemic, their ‘Covid’ project seems to have been more successful than most! A meeting of musical minds with much more to say than can be heard in one sitting. The songs are funny, meaningful, and sometimes abstract in an acutely poetic way. But, what is abstract nonsense to some is purposeful mantra to others.
With brilliant production and really wonderful musicality, “While We Were Making Plans” is a gorgeous example of what you should be doing with a little time on your hands. Makes me feel a little guilty for all that online shopping I did frankly.
There’s a little Bowie in here, a touch of Talking Heads, a smidgen of punk and prog rock. But that’s what makes it sing…the mix, the ‘splatter’ of everything all around them growing up and becoming humans.
It’s a travelogue of their wildly creative minds and I absolutely loved it!!! Nothing better than expressive lyrics about deeply personal and important stuff set to wonderful riffs and brilliant funky spinning synths vocals. It’s all them…no holds barred, no apologies, no regrets…utterly brilliant.
Favorite track, “Corner of my Eye” – absolute genius!
