There’s just something about funk music that everyone loves, no matter how old you are or where you come from.
It’s joyous, it’s soulful, it’s earthy and vital and when you hear it you can’t help but sway your body and nod your head feel glad to be alive.
The Black City band are from Turin, Italy and they put their heart and soul into this really excellent album. From the very opening bars of “Wake Up. The Funk” it’s clear you are in for something very, very special. I love Martin Craig’s lead vocals, all rusty and husky and full of resonance and texture. It’s a perfect blend with the warm pulsating rhythms and the gorgeously deep base. The drums and percussion are fantastic too, all asymmetrical, haunting and sexy.
It’s a truly brilliant album. I love the mix of Italian and English lyrics and the philosophical and beautifully written songs. Nothing is thrown away, no cliches, nothing I’ve heard before, all unique and stunningly original…I’d love to see these guys live, apparently, they frequent a little funk club in Rivoli, Birraceca Pub82, on the Thursday nights jam sessions. Wouldn’t that be an amazing reason to fly to Italy!?
They kind of feel like a funky Gorillas, tough, sarcastic, opinionated with something to say and a particularly gorgeous way of saying it. Some of the songs are dark, hence the name I suspect, but the music pulls you in and keeps you moving. It’s uplifting though, hopeful, the music fills you up while the lyrics make you think.
I love, love, love this record, another one for the summer rotation! Viva l’Italia!
