Where oh where has Tanya Gallagher been all my life?
Her smokey, dulcet tones flip effortlessly through these catchy powerful songs.
Listening to this six-track, mini album you go from one song to the next expecting to have met the lead track, only to find that the next is just as perfect as the last.
She is Fiona Apple meets Sarah McLachlan meets Alanis Morissette with a twist of Florence and the Machine. Yet she is a voice alone, supported by the simplest of arrangements, chugging along nicely with stripped back drums and guitar and some jangly keys. Her voice right out front all the time push, push, pushing her lyrics and her story until you can barely stand it.
I remember the first time I listened to Fiona Apple’s “Criminal,” and after I picked myself up of the floor and listened to it a hundred times more. This transcendent and utterly sublime singer-songwriter gives me those same mystical vibrations. She is relentless. Her voice is reaching into your chest, grabbing your heart and making you feel what she felt when she was at her most lost, most bereft and most alone. And you will be so grateful.
This is a great big beautiful “so long sucker” kind of record. Born of a breakup, twisted with anger and pain and gorgeous, victorious survival. Her words so precise and poignant and poetic she captures exactly what we all feel all of the time. Some writers can, in just a few words, tell you their whole life story and spin you their entire soul and Tanya Gallagher is one of them. If she doesn’t change the musical universe then I don’t know a damn thing….GET. THIS. RECORD!!!!!
