[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of of Write Act Repertory’s TALES FROM THE BEYOND, a collection of world premiere one-acts at the third annual Cringe Festival Series (2025), running October 11-26 at the Brickhouse Theatre.
Another year, another Cringefest! L.A. really knows how to do Halloween right, and the invaluable and absolutely vital small theatres tucked away all around us are especially brilliant at entertaining with their special seasonal scares. Write Act Rep is in its third year of their version of this wonderful tradition, and I have been delighted to attend both years before this one! So it’s actually become a bit of a tradition for me too!
This year’s selection of short spookiness is a fabulous array of peculiar, weird, thrilling, frightening and thought-provoking…with a large dash of humor to boot! Almost every play is funny and all are populated with excellent characters getting up to all kinds of no good.
From an Axe man in your living room, to something at the forefront of all our minds, AI robots taking over the world. A future, post-apocalypse alien invasion, two bratty friends find their true selves at a traveling carnival and a witch’s coven who tries to sacrifice one of their own, and of course, gets much more than they bargained for.
A lovely spread of the bizarre and the tricky, the moribund, the cursed, and the inevitably doomed. Brilliant casting makes every story believable and inventive, hilarious hosts walk us through the funny, strange, highly inventive and yet somehow still poignant plays.
What might seem frivolous and just for fun is subtly much more than that. After all, the always the most memorable and the most frightening tales of all are merely a mirror to humanity. TALES FROM THE BEYOND is a thoroughly enjoyable tiptoe around what really scares us the most….ourselves.
But remember, this is all about entertaining us and finding new and interesting ways to celebrate this classically L.A. season of the macabre. And they have succeeded once again to make us laugh and think and prepare for our inevitable and complete demise…bravo!
