Sluka’s Sunset Screamer

A NoHo Arts music review of Sluka’s single Sunset Screamer.

[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts music review of Sluka’s single Sunset Screamer.

Sunset Screamer is another spirited cinematic musical release from San Diego’s avant-garde musician extraordinaire Sluka, and the first single of the forthcoming album, Cautionary Yell. Sluka is no stranger to me, having discovered the San Diego-based musician several years ago. He always impresses me with his fiercely individual style and bold, fearless lyrics and arrangements.

A NoHo Arts music review of Sluka’s single Sunset Screamer.

Sluka is a performer, a showman, a man on a mission to entertain. But always deeply embedded in the music is his purpose. In this case, to remind us of the unsettling connection between 1930’s Germany and the current escalation of fascism in the US.  He asks us not to look away as the lies and the rhetoric seek to destroy this democracy and it’s a relief to know that someone as gifted, driven and talented is working on our behalf.

Regardless of his message, Sluka is always a perfectionist when it comes to his musicianship, arrangements, and of course his videos. He reminds me of Bowie, no surprise, with his unapologetic intellectual poet vibe. But this track also had me feeling Danny Elfman, such is the elasticity of Sluka’s voice and his propensity to largess and gorgeous drama.

This is a timely track…given what the country is hurtling existentially toward come November. Never let it be said that the world of music stays out of the needs to actively get in the way in fact, as do we all, or even lead. I loved the music and I love the message. Let’s turn up the volume on Sunset Screamer. What an excellent song!!
