[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Karin Nahmani’s one-woman show Shit Isn’t A Dirty Word – How Gut Health Made Me Who I Am at the Solo Stars Series festival.
Solo shows are a favorite of mine. So I’m already primed for a show’s success as soon as I take my seat. Some solo shows are funny, some are sad, and some are motivating. But, perhaps unsurprisingly, I had yet to see a solo show that made me think so much about my own poop…until I saw Karin Nahmani’s Shit isn’t a Dirty Word.
Don’t worry, this show isn’t weird…well, maybe it is a little bit weird. But, it’s also extremely informative, very very funny and it just might save your life. Karin has her own clinic where she performs colonics and other healing arts and this show is all about her journey to poop and why we should all be paying much more attention to it.
Karin trained as a healer in massage and many other techniques, but she was always fascinated by body cleansing and how transformative it can be. So she studied and practiced and against almost all advice she began performing colonics in Los Angeles. Now, many years later, she has opened her own clinic and is the poop tzar to the stars.
I don’t think I have ever learned as much as I did about anything from a solo show as I learned from this show even though I spent much of the show laughing! Karin managed to inform as she entertained and by the end of the show, I was a convert…I may in fact have asked for a colonic for Christmas!
Karin is charming and clearly highly motivated, but I think what struck me most about her was her kindness. She really seems to want us all to live healthy happy lives…and she has a way to actually make that happen. She is brutally honest, funny and gorgeous, which helps a lot I think when she talks about the poop. The show is purposeful, moving and it pushes against our natural instinct to ignore what comes out of our bodies. It really does make sense that our stomachs control us. I know mine always has! But she offers hope and guidance and a hilariously honest approach to health and well being. She gives us real insight into how we can improve and even transform our lives and I for one am a believer that what comes out of our bodies can tell us everything!
I felt like I had been to a TED Talk and actually learned something I could relate to and use in my everyday life. And I also laughed my butt off!! Bravo Karin!
