Searching for Me in All the Wrong Places

A NoHo Arts theatre review of Searching for Me in All the Wrong Places written and performed by Greta Fadness.

[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of Searching for Me in All the Wrong Places written and performed by Greta Fadness, developed and directed by Jessica Lynn Johnson, returning to the Zephyr Theatre on January 19, 2025.

This brilliant solo play is back at the Zephyr theatre in January and I am thrilled you may have the chance to see it! I caught the December show and was truly transported into Greta’s life. She has a way of befriending as she unfolds her journey in subtle authentic ways. There is a sweetness in her strength, the kind you might call upon when most in need. She found a warrior within herself but not the trumpeting kind, the noble, quietly victorious kind. The kind that is most feared by adversity and terror…and she experienced a lot of both of those before she escaped the tired bindings of paralysing self loathing.

Her story is a long one and she brings it to us in the middle of her life. A life story full of continuous self discovery and perseverance told with so much honesty and humor your face may ache with smiling by the end of it. Solo shows are a favorite of mine. I see a lot of them and they are all wonderful in their own ways, regardless of the performer’s abilities or experience. But a very few have been particular stand outs and Greta Fadness’sSearching for Me in All the Wrong Places is, undoubtedly, among those few.

From her very beginnings as a human, she yearned to belong, as many of us do, and in finding it not an entirely easy thing. She became split in two, public and private, twice the person. Again, not unusual really. But in this play, she moves so beautifully between them, the outer Greta and the inner, along with many other funny and moving characters in her life and in her head. She guides us effortlessly through every turn of fate and every interference by the universe in her travels. As she shares we recognize ourselves in her, we are drawn into her suffering and her success, her breaking and her becoming. Only the most gifted of storytellers can accomplish this and when we stumble upon them it’s only right to recognize them and share their glory!!

I highly recommend Searching for Me in All the Wrong Places. The Zephyr Theatre is one of the best places in town to see solo theatre and Jessica Lynn Johnson and Heather Dowling always produce these shows with impeccable grace and an unmatched enthusiasm for this wonderful inclusive genre.
