This is not the first time I’ve reviewed Paul Maged’s music. Last year his single “The Resistance” was on general release, which I absolutely loved.
He’s a master of the protest song and political rhetoric. A deeply committed musician with songs drawn from the struggles he is a witness to all around him, as well as those within himself.
“Culture War” is definitely a rock album, full of charged and rousing, swelling melodies and inspirational lyrics. The songs are delivered with passion, they are heartfelt and big and booming. It’s Billy Joel meets Green Day. High energy, intense, melodic and purposeful. Big arrangements, driving drums, arcing guitars, rich productions. It’s a big sound.
These are real songs, beautifully constructed, traditionally structured, with bridges, and choruses and anthemic hooks. They are sweaty and pounding, the drums at the center and the guitars growling along. Paul Maged is a musical poet at heart, a man on a mission to spread his particular understanding of the world, good and bad.
He also has a really fantastic voice. It’s all rock, richly emotional, full, dramatic. He‘d be great in a rock musical, in fact I’d like to see him try! I love this album. Right now we really need strong voices with something important to say in creative and melodic ways. Paul is exactly that. A rock poet with an urgency that is exciting and powerful and honest. Love it!!
Favorite song, “Simplicity.”
