[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts music review of Paul Lewis and Romeo Rage’s “Sky’s Rust.”
I love the production on this album, Paul Lewis and Romeo Rage’s “Sky’s Rust.” It perfectly matches the gorgeously theatrical, resonating sounds and the classical overtones. There’s a richness to these songs. A classic American sound with Lewis’s melancholy bluesy vocals.
Paul Lewis is a prolific songwriter, his songs are cinematic, brilliantly crafted and purposeful. The idea for this particular selection was formed during Covid, but the songs had been brewing for a while. Together they form a brooding, dreamlike journey with superb musicianships from all involved.
Romeo Rage is a new project for Lewis and has him working closely with drummer John Sanders who becomes the center around which all these songs orbit. His jazz-inspired, subtle at times and full on at others really work with Lewis’s dynamism and poetic sensibilities.
Paul Lewis is an outlier. A unique. An actor, a performer, a creative composer for film and a songwriting storyteller.
This album gives all these talents an opportunity to shine and it’s well worth your time. I loved its moody mournful moods and the exquisite, sculptured songs. No wonder he composes for film…his music is evocative and captivating. Turn it up!!!
