“Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre GOES BROADWAY!” Is a unique, interpretive fusion of jazz and ballet, celebrating Broadway’s most beloved and memorable moments from “Chicago,” “West Side Story,” “On the Town,” “Hair,” “Les Misérables,” “Carousel” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”
Artistic director Natasha Middleton blends a mixture of the original classic dance with vibrant and innovative choreography, paying tribute to unforgettable favorites, including “All That Jazz,” “America,”’ “I Dreamed a Dream,” “The Music of the Night” and more.
The evening is filled with the legendary music of Leonard Bernstein, John Kander, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Galt MacDermot, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein and Claude-Michel Schönberg.
We asked Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre’s artistic director, Natasha Middleton, more on why she chose to focus this performance on Broadway.
Before I became the Artistic Director of Pacific Ballet Dance Theatre, I performed in many musicals. Loved musicals since childhood. Mother was opera singer, so singing was my family. Father was ballet dancer and director, so I wanted the best of both worlds. Musical was the answer. My company dancers were so excited when I told them we were dancing from different Broadway musicals. Something they always wanted to do.
My favorite musical is “Chicago.” I danced the role of Velma several years ago. My second favorite is “My Fair Lady” (not doing in this production) and then “The Phantom of the Opera,” which we are doing a section of.
“The Phantom of The Opera” is danced by our principal dancers: Grigori Arakelyan and Irina Gharibyan as Christine. “Cinderella” (the musical) danced by principal dancers; Elen Harutyunyan as Cinderella and Preston Swovelin as Prince Christopher. Principal dancer Damara Titmus will dance as Miss Turnstiiles in “On The Town” and Louise in “Carousel.” In “On The Town” the three Sailors are danced by Richard Biglia as Gabey, Ian Schwaner as Ozzie and Edgar Khachaturov as Chip. In “Les Misérables”, ballerina Alina Bormotova will dance a solo as Fantine in “I Dreamed a Dream.” Dancer, Ian Schwaner will also dance a solo as Jean Valjean in “Bring Him Home”…..and more.
The show has a little bit for everyone. Recommended for children starting from age 5. “On The Town” is family fun, as well as “Cinderella” and “West Side Story,” and “Hair.” The more dramatic pieces are “Les Misérables” and “Carousel.” The more spicy piece is Cell Block Tango from “Chicago.”
