[NoHo Arts District, CA] – Breakdowns Productions will present renowned playwright Theresa Rebeck’s sharp comedy “Spike Heels” at the Sherry Theater in North Hollywood from September 13-22.
Directed by Janna King, the talented cast includes (in alphabetical order) Maximilien Blanc as Andrew, Don DiPetta as Edward, Taryn Falcetti as Georgie and Stephanie Hoston as Lydia. Understudies are Chandra Bond, Zephry Lyne, Eric Marq and Genah Redding.
The play takes place in 1990’s Boston but it’s never been more current, with the story centering on sexual politics, complicated relationships and equally fraught friendships. In a kind of “Pygmalion” gone awry, a young woman faces off with two men whose underhanded and mildly unconscious manipulations backfire. She strikes up an unlikely alliance with another woman wrestling with her own connections to the group. Rebeck tackles the complex subject matter with dry humor, witty banter and poignant revelations. The production and wardrobe bring back the retro look of the 90s which has made its way back around as trendsetting.
“In the 90s, I started out as an assistant to various producers and studio executives, all male. Georgie is a law firm secretary dealing with sexual harassment, which was rampant during that time,” says King, who took on the play in great part because she could relate to it. “Today, women are still struggling with power dynamics, socially and professionally. Rebeck’s writing continues to hit home.”
King, also a screenwriter in TV movies and series, has previously collaborated with Breakdowns Productions and writer-actor-director-producer Genah Redding on the original one-act collections “THE HO BAG 1, 2 and 3” which played the past three years to a full house at the Sherry Theater. Breakdowns Productions, King and the “Spike Heels” cast can all be found on their respective Instagram accounts.
The original “Spike Heels” production bowed at New York’s Center Stage in 1992 and has been performed throughout the country.
