[NoHo Arts District, CA] – The Group Rep is proud to present NETWORK, written by Lee Hall, based on the Paddy Chayefsky film, directed by Tom Lazarus, and produced by Stevie Stern.
NETWORK was adapted from the 1976 film that had an Academy Award–winning screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky. “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore.”
About NETWORK
Howard Beale, beloved and trustworthy news anchorman, isn’t pulling in the viewers anymore. In his final broadcast, he unravels live on screen. But when the ratings soar, the network pounces on their newfound populist prophet, and Howard becomes the biggest thing on TV. The audience becomes part of the play as a studio audience. The distance between fact and fiction is reduced, mimicking the blurring of truth and fiction in contemporary news media.
What critics have said about the play:
“…it’s still harrowing to hear Chayevsky’s foreshadowing of populism, the inertia of politics and the corruption of finance, even reality TV as we know it today. Not only did it all come true, but we’re now beyond the worst of his imagination. And if this “Network” …still offers what one character calls a “cleansing moment of clarity.” – Spectrum News/NY 1
“Thrillingly inventive and chillingly prescient” – The Stage
“The depth of Chayefsky’s cynicism is so breathtaking, so full of existential despair that it makes today’s critical pundits look like weepy whiners. – Variety
