Negativehate’s “Shapeshifter”

[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts music review of Negativehate’s album “Shapeshifter.”

“Shapeshifter” is an amazing album. Full of beautiful evocative songs and really incredible musicianship. The tracks range from full-on metal rock to gorgeous hybrids of jazz and prog rock and everything in between.

There’s a brilliant drama to these songs. Theatrical, cinematic, in the vein of Nine Inch Nails, or Radiohead. Negativehate is a hard band to place and it’s perhaps because of this that they speak to so many. The songs are unapologetically epic, with huge sweeping sentiments and purposeful meaningful lyrics.

They have a position, if not a specific genre. That position seems to be all their own. They play what they love – poetic, heartfelt, deeply felt music full of real passion and dread and strength. I love the dynamic between their voices too, echos of anger and shadows of hope. It’s a beautiful enigmatic mix and it really, really works…

This is my first encounter with Negativehate and I have to say I am totally blown away by the intricate powerful walls of sound that somehow gives space to the insightful and poignant songs. Loved it!!!
