[NoHo Arts District, CA] – This month’s LA Art blog features Susan Feldman’s dreamland of miniatures in her exhibition My Own City (MOC). at  MOAH (Museum Of Art and History).

In a world between miniature dioramas and fantastical utopias, Susan Feldman treats us to My Own City (MOC). The dreamland of miniatures consists of 50 sculptures comprised of wood and various scavenged materials from Feldman’s workshop and journeys throughout Los Angeles. This mini city’s composition subsists of buildings such as the Meditation Center, the Breakfast Spot, as well as two beaches. Feldman is adamant that MOC does not have a police station, and yes, there is a dispensary.

While MOC seems it was born from the pandemic, Feldman insists that MOC’s inception began in 2019 (though comically she jests that she should just tell people 2020 is when she began work on MOC). In the beginning stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, I believe we all day dreamt about public spaces we were missing and ideally would inhabit while we were all cooped up in our homes. Feldman provides us with this daydream of her own perfect city.

Nothing about MOC is underthought. A vinyl DJ in her spare time, Feldman composed the soundtrack playing in the background of the MOC exhibition. Feldman is so thorough she even has souvenir mugs from the Breakfast Spot in MOC for purchase.

Feldman quips with double entendres and literal calques in her artwork. For example, the MOC hot springs are literally “hot” and “springs”; springs she rescued from a discarded pile of trash on the sidewalk which she painted red. Feldman encourages us to think about where all the people of MOC are, and guides us to the Community Center. It’s in this community center we find that we ALL are inhabitants of MOC.
