Moving On

A NoHo Arts theatre review of ELATE’s Moving On, an evening of three original one-act plays.

[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of ELATE’s Moving On, an evening of three original one-act plays.

Elate has been creating and producing plays in our neighborhood for 40 years! Wow. Their wonderful theatre is nestled beneath the Lutheran Church on Oxnard and Radford. A hidden gem really, good theatre and lovely tea and cakes served at intermission…who could ask for more?!

Every time I see a production here I am reminded about the power of community and the joy of theatre, no matter if the play is a classic or something new made by these dedicated theatre lovers.

This time I was treated to some new work, three plays written for this occasion by members of the theatre company and all revolving around the theme of “change.”

You might be forgiven for thinking that the title of the show would mean only death, however, that is not always necessarily where change occurs in life. In this case, the three plays place their protagonist at a crossroads of varying types and then the stories unfold in very different and surprising ways.

All the stories are very well written. Funny, thought provoking and interesting. The actors play their roles with dedication and skill and the overall effect is three very memorable and entertaining plays about radical shifts in life, whether by choice or not.

If there is one thing we can all bank on in life it is change. We grow, we age, we lose, we win, we love, we break up and then, hopefully eventually, we die. As I grow older it becomes clearer and clearer to me that we have very little control over anything. The best we can do is enjoy the ride as they say and try to be kind and hold on to our sense of humor as the universe has its way with us. If we are lucky and love well we will be happy, if we are brutes we will not. These three plays cleverly present arguments for the former rather than the latter. And give us a great evening of dedication, creativity and love. Bravo ELATE for yet another wonderful evening of theatre!
