[NoHo Arts District, CA] – A NoHo Arts theatre review of The Group Rep’s Motel 66, from June 5 through July 13.
Motel 66 is a regular institution at the wonderful Group Rep Theatre. Almost every year, they have a new series of stories all set in the iconic Motel 66. This year is no exception to their rule of excellence, originality and wild humor. Seven new shows, written and played by members of the Group Rep and every one as entertaining, thought provoking and memorable as the next.

It’s such a clever place to begin a story. A motel on the road to somewhere else. Strangers, lovers and old friends, family members and even the dead can cross paths in this place. They all have stories to tell…
Route 66 is a much-traveled road. It starts in the heart of the country and heads west to the Pacific. And many hearts have been broken and dreams dashed, although I suppose there must have been just as many sweet beginnings and futures begun. Here’s hoping!

These stories are as varied as the folks who travel this road. From a sister trying to talk her brother out of what she considers is the biggest mistake of his life. To a woman returning to the worst night of her life and finding her long-dead boyfriend waiting to forgive her. A young woman traveling to find a safe place for a scary medical procedure without judgment. Siblings fighting. Lovers rekindling. Intergalactic heroes. Tough love. These stories run the spectrum of our lives and do it with fantastic writing, wonderful, compelling performances and The Group Rep’s usual finesse.

There is something a bit magical about The Group Rep. NoHo’s own rep theatre never disappoints and always surprises. They have created a safe space for performers to express themselves and for audiences to have fun! And maybe even learn something! The performances are always wonderful, the characters always real and engaging, and the stories always about the things we all can relate to, but told to us in a myriad of funny and heartrending ways.
I love this ensemble and Motel 66 is really the perfect vehicle for them to show us who they truly are. Brilliant!
